31 Dec 2019 | New Year 2020 - Finding Balance with the mind of an addict TIS179 | 00:15:14
Getting real on this episode to talk about my personal balance as we enter the next decade and the start of a new year. Instead of celebrating all of the things I did this past year that were awesome, I usually find myself looking back at what I can improve. It's not always in the most positive mood, but I always try to focus on what I can do to make things better. This podcast has been a huge source of improvement for me and came into my life at my lowest point - right before I accomplished one of the hardest things in my life. Quitting a pack a day cigarette habit. But I really just transferred my addiction to something productive. Sometimes thats great, and sometimes the same old habits come back in other ways that don't include going outside to smoke. I've learned it's a mindset - not just a physical addiction. What I learned about my addictive mindset is if applied properly it can help me achieve my greatest goals. But it is a double edged sword and needs consistent discipline to keep in line. I talk about my own balance as I look to 2020 and of course find someway to tie it into the current state of the space industry. In this case, the commercial crew program with NASA, SpaceX, Boeing and the ULA. There's a balance to everything, from space travel to personal challenges. Identifying that it is a problem or that it needs fixing is the first step.
Hope you have a wonderful New Year and wish you the best of luck!
07 Sep 2021 | Inspiration, 3D printing, and the double-edged sword of Work-Stacking | TIS#252 | 00:25:51
We're back after an episode-light August and ALOT of 3D printing with AG3D to talk about the double-edged sword of work-stacking. A technique I learned from a toolmaker in my days working in injection molding and by researching how a certain South African human is able to do so much with their companies in rockets, electric cars, AI, satellite internet, tunneling, neural interfaces and more... It's a powerful tool but WOW can you overload yourself. So we'll be talking about that a little more in depth, as well as covering the latest with Astra, Firefly, Starship and of course the upcoming Inspiration 4 mission. 30 Nov 2023 | LESS Space Debris with Flexible Solar Panels | Ascent Solar Technologies CEO Paul Warley | People of Space | 00:49:24
Space Debris - a problem that continues to exponentially grow as more and more payloads are sent to Earth orbit every day. Old satellites, or ones without fuel or power, essentially become a giant piece of trash that orbits uncontrolled with the “traffic” of low earth orbit. Now, with companies beginning to be hit with government fines over leaving debris in space - what can be done to prevent or reduce the potential and real space debris? 29 Apr 2024 | NASA's 1st Crewed Starliner Mission launching May 6th! CST-100 Astronauts Suni Williams & Butch Wilmore to ISS | 00:18:00
In this episode, we prepare for next week's human space launch of Boeing's Starliner, the first Crewed mission for Altas V & the CST-100 spacecraft! This is the culmination of the investment NASA & US taxpayers put into the Commercial Crew Program. Two human-rated spacecraft were given contracts to test & evenutally fly human beings to the ISS. SpaceX Crew Dragon already flies to the ISS regularly with Astronauts & supplies, and Boeing's Starliner is ready to have its first crewed mission! It's been a long road, and much controversy over the years - even beginning at the start of Commercial Crew when only two companies were chosen there was a rift that unfolded in the space industry. I share my thoughts on the whole endeavor in the hopes that we can learn something and be better off for the future. It's also a good time to contemplate how grateful we should be that the US is close to having full redundency for human launch capability to the ISS. In a world where not long ago we relied fully on Russia's Soyuz to send humans to the ISS, what would have happened if NASA and the US never invested in American Spacecraft that launch on American soil in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine? 5-10 years ago, this would have meant the end of the ISS. Welcome to another episode of the podcast! On this episode, I'm sharing my thoughts on AI. Specifically, the tools I actually use with some practical-use metrics to show how it's helping me (the individual) do more and spend more time in my creative zone and less time doing things I dont like. I also share my thoughts on AI, and some fundamental beliefs I use to guide my adoption of it. The idea of this episode to give you some real world examples of how AI benefits me, in the hopes it helps you look at AI as a tool and not the enemy. Then I'll close out with my how I think people should use it and when NOT to use AI. At the end, I share thoughts on how AI could be used in Space to help humanity travel the final frontier Keywords: AI tools, creativity enablement, AI metrics, AI future, AI understanding, AI benefits, AI challenges, AI productivity, AI transcription, AI editing, AI brainstorming, AI cost-benefit, AI integration, AI limitations, AI potential Timestamps: -------------------------- Here's to building a fantastic future - and continued progress in Space (and humanity)! 18 May 2023 | Thoughts from an Engineer: A Notebook, Anxiety, and Community | Notes for Mental Health Awareness Month | 00:25:26
On this episode, we spend some time talking about Mental Health and a period when it felt like chaos was all around - graduating from college with my Aerospace Engineering Degree. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...but I learned alot! One might say this period was where I first learned I could have control over my own mind if I put the work in. A little story time about one of the lowest periods of my life, and how human connections helped me get out of a serious rut. The reason I share this is to hopefully start the conversation and help one person get a little bit closer to healing or asking for help. Let us know what you think, and if you have any tools you use to manage your own mental health! Big Quesions/Thoughts for this episode:

02 Dec 2021 | Jordan Noone | Space "Beyond Launch", Deep Tech, and Embedded Ventures | People of Science | 01:16:25
This week we are joined by Jordan Noone for an episode of People of Science. Jordan is currently the Co-Founder, CTO/Partner of Embedded Ventures, dubbed the "skunkworks of deep tech venture capitol" is investing in companies and technologies for space "beyond launch". There's so much focus on the rockets, but the whole reason we have rockets is to send payloads into space. If we solve the cost problem of going to space with reusability, then what comes next? How good is the stuff we are sending to space? Are we even ready for it? This is what Embedded Ventures is focused on solving for the space industry. Jordan was previously a Co-Founder, CTO of Relativity Space, who are revolutionizing the additive manufacturing and aerospace world by combining 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and autonomous robotics to create a rocket from raw material in 60 days with 100X less parts. We learn about Jordan's STEM Origin story, which has ultimately led him to a unique perspective as a 28-year old multi-business entrepreneur and engineer. Speaking of unique - did we mention he worked at SpaceX on both Cargo & Crew Dragon, a small stint at Blue Origin, and the head of USC's Rocket Propulsion Lab? Buckle in folks, we're launching this podcast for what comes next in space! 30 Jan 2025 | The Space Conundrum | MORE Space Progress Means MORE Societal Chaos - But WHY? | 00:22:04
Welcome back to Today In Space! It’s the end of January, and we couldn’t start off the year without a recap of one of my favorite space theories—the Space Conundrum. As space progress accelerates, so does the chaos in society. But why does this happen? Why are they correlated? And more importantly, where is this all heading?” We’re going to explain what the space conundrum is, how it led to a world changing event the first time and why these times, as crazy & wild as they are, are actually a cycle we’ve seen before. So in favor of mental health & focus, let’s search for answers in the chaos of space progress and humanity! 18 Jun 2020 | Thoughts | SpaceX, NASA, Changing the World, and Addiction TIS#205 | 00:40:55
SpaceX was able to change the space world by launching American Astronauts Bob & Doug with the Demo 2 launch. It took 10 years and lots of hard work.
I quit a pack a day cigarette addiction after 7 tries to ‘quit’, and 5 years of replacing the habit and rewiring my brain with podcasting and 3dprinting.
How long will it take us to make real change in the world? What can we do to be in this for the ‘long haul’? How does addiction relate to changing the world? Well, I relate the only way I can, with my own experiences.
Hope you enjoy the rant of an episode. Thanks for listening and being a part of this space science podcast!

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about a 'Space Force'. But there are also new Space Policy Directives for NASA moving forward. In order to talk about these issues, given the state of US politics and news, we turned to science for a way to share the facts and help you come to your own conclusion. We set up a thought experiment where we asked what effect a Space Force and the new Space Policy Directives for NASA would have on the space industry? To be scientific, first Alex shares his biases, then goes over the facts (links below), a brief history of NASA politics for context, and then we lay out some possible pros and cons. On this episode (NUMBER 300!), we welcome Kevin Kelly, the CEO of Arcfield on the podcast and it was a GREAT conversation about all-thiings space. We discussed satellite technology, and how valuable the freedom to communicate is for space and humanity. Beaming the internet from space has brought space into the domain of war and national defense, so we were glad to have Kevin on to explain. We learn about the high standards that intelligence equipment and satellites (and communication) go through before launch. And we dive into some thoughts about SpaceX's Starlink (and any satellite) is changing the way we all look at the domain of space. We also learn Kevin's STEM origin stories, and his journey through STEM and the path to becoming a CEO of a place like Arcfield. Kevin all shares more about the people he works with, and what the mission is at Arcfield. For the right person, its an amazing innovative problem solving team to work with, and "taking on the most complex and demanding national security and space-related challenges". 11 Jun 2020 | Joshua Lynch - Legacy, Lifting Everyone up, Computer Science, Gaming, JMYSTIC | People of Science TIS#204 | 01:06:30
This week I had the honor of having Josh Lynch (@JMYSTIC) on the podcast. Josh and I met when we both worked in tech retail and always connected on content creation and having an online presence. He's currently finishing up his Computer Science Engineering degree and continues his online brand JMYSTIC with his streaming, various youtube channels, social media, and interacting with the community he's built online. As an admirer of everyone building their own legacy, I've been wanting to talk to him about the journey and challenges of building a brand online. Josh is not only an engineer, but he uses his knowledge of the technical and combines it with the artistic to put out some great content. I enjoy watching his stuff whenever it comes up on my feed. There are some video games I know only from watching him play them. Josh recently put out this reaction video on one of his new channels, and he had an incredible message from his perspective as a young black man in America. We discussed the murder of George Floyd and what's needed for change in the future. I thank him for coming on the podcast and sharing - make sure to follow him @jmystic everywhere. Look for that part 2 on his channel here soon:
23 Jan 2025 | AI & Business w/ David Hirschfeld, CEO of Tekyz | Tech Talk | 01:37:03
This week, on Today In Space...our first 'Tech Talk' about AI & Business (with some aspirational takes on the role of AI in Humanity's future on Earth and in Space). Our guest David Hirschfeld, CEO of Tekyz, shares the knowledge of his 35-year career in software, including his origin story founding a vending machine software company that grew to 800 customers in 22 countries! We discuss business and AI; including Tekyz's take on the importance of product-market fit and early customer engagement given that "95-98%" of startups fail. David introduced "Launch First," a strategy for pre-launch sales to validate market demand, sharing success stories of securing $70,000 in 60 days for a real estate product and $250,000 for clinical trial software. Long story short - David was a wealth of knowledge and practical expertise, and we talked about almost anything and everything tech, AI, and even philosophy and business along with some laughs! With the way 2025 is shaping up, AI and technology will continue to make a difference in our lives. Our goal is to dive-in head first, try to understand the unknown and talk to experts along the way and share it with you. Our goal is to face our fear of the unknow and try to understand the magic behind it, using the scientific mindset as our guide. If AI's promise of impact is anywhere close to humanity discovering fire, then every little bit of understanding we have will help us make a better future for the world tomorrow. While we definitely recommend you do your homework, all you need to do is get comfortable, get ready to listen, and dive in with us. Alex shares some of his thoughts and concerns about AI, and the two have a great debate of ideas and topics, some of which include:

08 Feb 2024 | NASA's PACE Mission DEEP DIVE & The Human Factor 03 | Self-Awareness | 00:25:06
On this episode, Alex opens the podcast with a quick run through (~4 min) of some of the Space Launches to look out for in February (SpaceX, Japan, India, NASA, Rocket Lab). We deep dive on NASA's PACE Mission, flying onboard a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket NET 1:33AM ET 2/8/24 (only a few hours after this podcast is released). We discuss what the mission is, what the payloads are, and why that science will be critical for understanding the water cycle on Earth and the climate changes that come from it. Alex closes the episode out with another 'Human Factor' segment, where we discuss the deep topic of WHO ARE YOU? But more importantly, how learning about yourself you can help you find a career that fits your strengths and fills you with purpose. The lucky ones know early on what they are good at, while most of us (myself included) had to try a lot of things to know what we "don't like". I share a story of when I realized that the typical Aerospace Engineer role wasn't for me, even though that was my whole identity at the time. 19 Sep 2023 | A Science-based Approach to the Unknown | Aliens, UFOs, and UAP | 00:25:13
On this week's episode, we use three of the latest Alien/UFO/UAP events to demonstrate how our science-based approach to the unknown works. In line with what NASA shared at the latest UAP conference, it's about differentiating the extraterrestrial needle from the earth-based haystack. We know there's alot of chaos surrounding these issues but we felt more voices from a science background need to share their pro-aliens-are-possible thoughts. (HUGE kudos to Astro-Alexandra for demonstrating this early on and inspiring me to do this episode). As Carl Sagan has said in the past, Science is not just a mass of knowledge but a way of thinking. So let's talk about that way of thinking about wild stuff like Aliens, UFOs, and UAP! Between two government hearings (USA & Mexico) and the recovery of IM1 particles by Avi Loeb and the Silver Star crew, there's alot to unpack but our approach is only two steps! A simple yet effective measure of how to deal with this information. Clue: It's ALL ABOUT DATA. But it's not about shaming exploration either. Learn more in the episode. We know this is a loaded topic, but we want to start the process of making this a citizen science effort to get public access data (which NASA plans to support) from reporting these events in the future. There's one thing that connects more human beings than ever before in history, and it already has a ton of sensors onboard. OUR SMARTPHONES! Even the NASA Independent UAP team concluded that. We're talking real-life tricorders that could be in the hands of most humans to record UAP events when they happen, and share with others. This could be the future of learning about what these UAP really are... Let us know what YOU think in the comments or email us at todayinspacepodcast@gmail.com! Human spaceflight has a history tied to defense and war, from the base technology of rockets (V2 Rocket), and the Space Race to the moon between the US and Soviet Russia, and the eventual Apollo-Soyuz docking in the middle of the Cold-War. Even today, while Ukraine and Russia are at war on Earth the human beings on board the ISS work together to survive in Space without the borders we draw in the literal sand for countries and states here on Earth. On this Thanksgiving week episode, we're breaking down Starship's latest test flight - IFT2 and comparing it to the first integrated test flight (a.k.a. IFT1). We think there are four major WINS for SpaceX, NASA, and humanity after IFT2's successful test launch. There is ALOT of work before humans can launch onboard, but IFT1 and IFT2 were only 6 months apart and they had to rebuild the pad. With a great looking launchpad post-launch, we expect LOTS of progress in 2024 for Starship! This episode is for folks of all levels of space nerdom, whether you're waiting for updates on Starship daily, or just finding out about the world most powerful rocket ever made...there's something for everyone. It's a true historic moment in space history that won't be fully appreciated (even by the most hardcore) for how special this moment is until the future. With a rocket system that has TWICE the thrust of the Saturn V - we're thankful for the balance between NASA & SpaceX (and the FAA) that this rocket is being developed! We’d love to know what you think and if you have any questions - so email us at todayinspacepodcast@gmail.com!

We’ve got a space-packed episode for you this week! We’re talking about some great things to LOOK UP for in the night sky this month, review the latest news since the start of the year, and break down the idea that we’re in the era of Space Race 2.0. The private sector is keeping the space industry strong and while interest is still high, there’s a ton of progress still to come! With a ton of success to build momentum on, SpaceX is doing great things. We bring attention to the person who we think is integral to the maintained success - and we’re not talking about Elon Musk, but their President and COO Gwynne Shotwell! On this week's episode we share some thoughts on just how significant the success of James Webb Space Telescope is so far after being assembled in space on its way to 1 million miles from Earth at L2. There's a lot we will learn about existence after the big bang thanks to JWST, and we know that Hubble changed the way we look at space. Who doesn't have a Hubble pic on their computer? You can support the podcast and get a 3D printed JWST inspired coaster here in our esty store at ag3dprinting.etsy.com We also talk about the difference between Engineers & Scientists, and how they support each other. And of course we share some thoughts about how crazy SpaceX's Starship is as the "chopsticks" of the launch tower are being weight tested before trying to literally catch the most powerful first stage rocket we have ever built... 09 Jan 2020 | The Balance: Is Starlink the end of Earth Based Astronomy? SpaceX Starlink 2 Launch Hangout TIS180 | 00:25:20
First podcast of the year meets first rocket launch of the year with SpaceX's Starlink 2 launch aboard a Falcon 9 (which attempted a landing on the droneship 'Of Course I Still Love You'). During this launch hangout we talk about the details behind the launch of 60 Starlink satellite that will be part of a constellation that will later provide affordable worldwide 5G internet coverage to all. The controversy? Unknown to seemingly everyone before launch, the reflectivity of the Starlink solar panels at certain periods of the day is ruining ground based astronomers images of the stars. I try to sift through the facts and provide a balanced point of view on this. Is SpaceX doing enough to help with this? Is this the end of Astronomy as we know it? 19 Sep 2024 | John Conafay CEO & Co-Founder of Integrate | Space Business & Collaborative Mission Planning | People of Science | 00:57:23
On this week's episode we are joined by John Conafay, the CEO & Co-Founder of Integrate to share his STEM Origin story and chat with us about the company. Integrate is touted as the only program management tool built specifically for multi-team hardware development. Another way of saying it could be that Integrate is bringing all of the various hardware teams involved in launching a rocket to space under one platform. The overlapping timelines of each piece of hardware on that rocket is a daunting task, especially when more than one thing goes wrong. Going to space is not just technically hard, it's a web of decisions that all need to go right - and it's not being looked at as fully or strategically as even the most Space Hardcore might think! John and his team at Integrate are working to solve this problem by bringing all of these hardware teams into one program management tool. One timeline, everyone's needs, one source of truth. Which, if done well, could help reduce many potential mistakes and stressful time management issues last second. Reducing these "easy human mistakes" with program management can make space travel more successful, cost less, and reduce a lot of baseline risk. At the end of the day, what's a rocket launch other than a string of risky decisions that need to go right in order to get to space? We'd love to know what YOU think! Let us know in the comments below or by emailing us at todayinspacepodcast@gmail.com. Topics: space, industry, company, building, hardware, work, launch, integrate, risk, mission, sales, spacex, satellites, small launch, punk, entrepreneur, business, hardware integration, mission planning

30 Mar 2022 | The Balance | US Launch Independence, SLS rollout, & the changing tide of global Space efforts | 00:41:04
This week we discuss the nuanced topic of launch independence, the ability of a single country to continue their space programs regardless of global conflict that might interrupt international partnerships like the ISS and other space ventures. Given the continuing conflict in Ukraine, this story continues to develop. NASA also rolled out the SLS for the first time from the VAB to Pad 39B, which marks a momentus moment for Artemis 1 just around the corner. Looking forward to seeing that rocket in person in a few months! We're trying to go down to Florida and take it all in! Having a moon rocket along with all of our amazing "broomsticks" here in the US provides us an opportunity to continue our progress in space without the need for the Russian Soyuz system. US launch independence is at an all time strength given the last 10 years of work to allow America to launch its own Astronauts from American soil. What happened? How did we get here? Why are we so lucky? We attempt to answer those question throughout this episode. We also discuss the challenge others around the world are having now, as missions are getting shuffled now that organizations like ESA & JAXA who might have relied on Russian Soyuz launches to go to space. Even competitive rivals like OneWeb and Starlink are joining together to launch on American rockets to avoid delay and collapse of millions of invested dollars. It is a complex situation, and strangely the Space Force predicted these types of changes in their outline of Space Future 2060 release in 2019. All this and more on this weeks episode!

Brian had brought this article up to discuss, but considering I didn't read it before-hand, I really didn't have any right to give my take on it. So I cut that part of our conversation out. But, both me and Brian did have problems with this article for different reasons but the general consensus was that we don't agree with the way this article leads people on - especially right from the beginning with a title like this. (The timing of the article is a little suspicious as well) http://www.wsj.com/articles/eric-metaxas-science-increasingly-makes-the-case-for-god-1419544568 You can follow Brian Folan online at brian4ever.bandcamp.com
