But, what comes with this ease is also confusion. Why? There’s not just a low barrier to entry to become a “guru” or “expert,” there is literally NO barrier to entry. Do you care to be great? It’s easier now more than ever to be awesome at your craft. It’s also more important now than ever that you ARE an ace.

Why? The world has changed and employers have changed with it.

There are so many factors that have altered the landscape of the employer-employee relationship.

The number of opportunities in the workforce are only the beginning. This has created a lack of loyalty on the employee’s part. Employers, in turn, have mirrored the behavior. (Let’s not argue which is the chicken or egg.)

Remote working means you’re building less camaraderie or affinity to each other. That means, unfortunately, employers are becoming less patient with employees who are not producing.

Skills. You have ‘em. I know you do.

Can you demonstrate them? Do you know which ones to shine the light on?

It’s important. Always. Just more important now.

Inflation is hovering around 6%.

Unemployment is roughly 3.6%.

Our US Fed is trying to manage inflation by raising interest rates.

We’re trying the disinflation thing which means a slowdown in the rate of inflation even though inflation is still positive.

The last 10 times this happened, for every 2% reduction in inflation, unemployment went up 3.6%. (That’s historical fact.)

It’s linear-ish, so each 2% drop in inflation means 3.6% increase in unemployment.

So, let’s carry a few numbers.

That means if we want to get back down to ~ 2% inflation, we might be adding 7.2% to the unemployment rate = 10.8%.

Ouch.

Writing your resume requires sales skills, marketing skills, an advanced understanding of human psychology, and a basic understanding of biochemistry.

Okay. I might have gotten carried away there on the biochemistry thing.

But, you get the idea.

These sales and marketing skills are ones you likely don’t earn a salary for, but make or break you when you’re trying to get a new job and salary!

SUMMARY

Have you ever felt like you were driving through your life or your career with the emergency brake on? It feels as if no matter how hard you work at something, you’re simply not progressing as quickly as you’d like?

Today, I want to talk about a daily exercise I’ve practiced religiously—visualization. And, provide some insight into how to visualize your way to success. Five minutes of this every day will improve your life dramatically.

When did that gray hair and eye wrinkle show up?

I never notice my face change from day to day. Only when I look at pictures from a few years back can I see the transformation.

Much of your life is like this. Your career is like this. Your marriage can be like this.

While most people prefer to slow the aging process, many want to accelerate their lives and careers. Much like the unnoticeable change with age, your progress from day to day becomes imperceptible.

Oftentimes, you’ll feel better about your advancements if you take time to look back at where you were one, three, and five years ago. That’ll help your psyche a bit.

I’m sure many of you are like me. You feel where you’ve been is history. You care more about getting where you’re going—and you want to get there is a hurry!

First Step: Before you look forward, take a deep breath and spend a few moments realizing (yes—realizing) how far you’ve come and all you’ve accomplished. In fact, spend a few minutes every day doing this.

What’s the best way to get from where I am to where I want to go?

There are few key principles to understand to help you quickly get from where you are to where you want to go:

• Identify where you want to go.
• Make sure you’re working toward something you love.
• Believe you can accomplish it.

Identify. The first is you’ll get where you’re going faster if you know where you want to go. It also helps to know where you are. Don’t laugh. Most people are in a much better starting position than they realize.

Love. The second is you’ll make greater leaps in life by doing small things you love than doing big things you don’t. You need to enjoy yourself each day because your passion and optimism will fuel getting things done. Most importantly, don’t let what you can do stop you from doing what you were meant to do!

Believe. The third is you need to believe you can get there and be unafraid to jump in! At least once a day, I think about this fantastic quote from American Naturalist and Essayist John Burroughs. He said, “Leap, and the net will appear.” (If you’re really ambitious, check out The Art of Seeing Things: Essays by John Burroughs and You’ll See it When You Believe it by Wayne Dyer.) You believe it. Then it happens. It’s never the other way around.

Where’s the 5-minute thing you promised me? I’m in a hurry…

Okay antsy pants. Visualize yourself at your end-state even though you don’t know how to get there.

Imagine yourself at your “destination.” What’s it like? How does it feel? How does it sound? What will the end-state allow you to do?

Imagine this for five minutes. It’s okay to dream, but you’re more likely creating a reality.

“Five minutes” means you can do this in the shower, on the train, or wherever. It’s best to do it in a quiet location.

This visual of you in all your glory will have pull power—it’ll feel like it’s pulling you toward it. In actuality, you’ll be pushing yourself toward it one step at a time.

There are really only two steps required for the greatest level of success: the next step and the extra step. You simply need to know what you need to do next to move toward your destination. Putting a little extra effort along the way will separate you from the masses who are unwilling to do that.

1. Picture the end-state, what it’s like, how it feels, how is sounds, and what it will enable you to do.
2. You need to do this repetitively as you work toward this transition and evolution. That will help you do this one-day at a time.
3. Then take what you’ve identified as the next step. And take it. One step at a time.

One fantastic resource to help you visualize your future is Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. It’s a great book by Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy. I hope you enjoy it.

I realize it’s mid-November and the Christmas décor has already draped many stores for an entire month, but your career doesn’t take a holiday (nor do I).

You’re at the start line of a 3-month hiring frenzy.

It doesn’t matter whether the year is 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 or 2024 or any other years I omitted.

It doesn’t matter what you do. Who you are. Who you were. Or, who you want to be.

It's the SAME every single year.

As an executive recruiter, I could have rolled out of bed on Halloween.

Worked until the end of January.

And taken the rest of the year off.

Every year.

Employers start hiring like crazy NOW.

You might consider me nutso for thinking this.

After all, it’s contrary to what most think.

But just because many think it doesn’t make it so.

I’ll debunk the myth for you.

I once had a client who would say to me, “But, Andy, I’m really bad at predicting the future.”

She was referring to her ability to hire the right engineers for her company.

She’d say they sounded great in the interviews.

Then, she’d notice, after they were hired, they didn’t really have the traits she thought they did.

This works both ways.

Job candidates don’t often know what questions to ask potential employers to determine whether they company is a great fit for them.

I guess, technically speaking, asking the questions is the easy part. After all, you can just ask the ones I give you.

The challenge lies in your ability to dissect the employers’ responses.

That’s why, in today’s lesson, I’m going to give the ultimate question to ask an employer to know (yes, know) whether it’s a great fit for you.

Here’s the question…

“What do you love about working here?”

That’s the easy part and you don’t even need to listen to the podcast to know what it is.

The gold isn’t in asking the question.

It’s in knowing what their responses mean—to YOU…

--------------------

No matter what your job is, over the length of your career, your network and it's health and strength is going to be your single greatest advantage in succeeding in your career.

Sure, a lot of you starting now have some smarts, a good job, and are willing to work hard. All that sets you in the right direction, but over the long-term, over a multi-decade career that simply will not be enough to be truly successful.

My 7 Key Success Factors for Business Networking

There are two areas I want to review about networking: what makes it successful and how to actually do it! So, let’s review my seven key principles for how to do it successfully and then a five step plan of attack to execute those principles.

1. It’s an all-the-time thing.

You need to do it all the time. If you only do it when you need it, you're not going to be successful. If you need to network, it's already too late if you don't already have a healthy one. Be very, very consistent.

2. Give value first. Take second.

Give value first to others before you ask for something. It could be anything. But whatever value you provide—your time, energy, education, favors—give it first.

3. Give more than you take.

Put more into the networking bank. Keep making deposits before you make withdrawals.

4. Do it live.

This is not an email thing. This is human interaction. This is building deeper relationships. This is spending time with people.

5. Do what you say you’re going to do—build trust.

Always follow through. Whether you’re providing information, making a referral, etc. You want to be known for having a good “word,” being trustworthy, and being dependable.

6. Move it forward and expand their network.

If the interaction between you and me dies with you, you haven't helped me build my network. So, you want to make sure you're thinking how can I help expand this person's network? Who might be good for him or her to know? You want to pay it forward, you want to move it forward, and you want to expand their network. The point is for both of you to grow your networks.

7. Build a systematic plan that allows you to execute.

You need to build a plan that makes you consistent, organized, and working toward building a healthy network that meets your goal and the goals of others.

My 5-Step Plan to Build a Healthy Professional Network

This plan has served me well for multiple decades. It’s also helped me build and keep and extremely healthy network. This process works

A. Set your networking goals.

The first place to start is to set your goals. Don’t just start dialing up people and emailing them. That isn't going to get you where you need to be. You have to have a goal. And what do I mean by goals?

There are many, but let’s talk about four:

• Educations and advancement of your knowledge
• Camaraderie
• Job hunting
• Grow customers, partnerships, etc.

B. Build your relationship map by doing your research.

Who do you know who can move you toward your goals? Who do they know? Who do you want to know? Who might know them?

Build a relationship map. Literally build one. It could be a list of people, could be a diagram, or whatever it is that you want to do.

C. Identify 60 to 100 people you can connect with who can help you meet your goals.

Build a nice list of individuals. Spend an hour or so each month identifying the right people for you to connect with and contact. Do your homework. Be aggressive.

D. Prepare standard messages you can modify.

Draft 3-4 templates you can use to contact people and they tailor each one (in the next step) based on your relationship with them.

E. “E” is for execute.

Execute a consistent reach out program. For me, I contact five people at the beginning of each month.

I go through my list of people and my relationship map. I identify 5-6 people I’d like to contact. I either call them or email them to see if they want to get together (phone, coffee, lunch, dinner, etc.).

Give them a week to get back to you. If some don’t, start contacting others and so on and so forth.

Five people might not sound like a lot, but keep in mind you want to actually get together or speak with them. This is about spending time!

Adjust your plan according.

The point isn’t to do it exactly as I’ve laid it out. The point is to tailor this or some plan to accommodate your needs.

Feel free to adjust accordingly based on your goals. Most importantly, have fun and be generous!

Ever wonder how to change careers?

Meet Tracey.

She was at her new job in her new career for a short while when she and I connected on this. She couldn’t wait to tell me about it.

Bad assumptions.

Change that.

Assumptions of any kind.

They simply ruin your negotiation process.

Any time you speak first, you’re making an assumption.

Anytime you’re thinking, you’re making an assumption.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but unless you actually have a job offer in hand, you don’t know what the employer is thinking.

This is public enemy #1—assumptions—when it comes to negotiating an offer.

Public enemy #2 is not knowing what success looks like and how to argue your value in relation to it.

Interviews are complicated. They get further complicated when interviewers ask bad questions which in turn gets exacerbated by job candidates trying to regurgitate interview speak.

It’s really a stitch except for the part about you needing the new job.

Empathy doesn’t sound sexy, but it’s like still water that runs deep. It’s like roots of giant trees you wonder how can possibly stand so tall. And, yet, so few people are actually empathetic. Why?

Because you have never, not ever, had an experience that you were not at the absolute center of. Your thoughts and feelings about those experiences are automatic.

My experience of the same scene needs to be communicated to you. My feelings need to be communicated to you. And even if I did that perfectly, you still wouldn’t be able to know exactly how I feel.

That’s because my current experience (with you) is nuanced by all the other experiences I’ve had. Which, by the way, you haven’t had!

So, how is one to become a better person, better communicator, better at understanding their friends, partners, and spouses.

How does one become better at providing service or anticipating reactions or so many other desired life and business skills?

You need to stop being automatic.

The formula is not hard. The practice and execution are excruciatingly hard.

So hard that so many give up so easily. So? So, don’t let that be you!

Lemme tell ya why.

I have a podcast for you today. It’s a beauty (I think).

I needed to attach a title to it because that’s a law in podcastland.

I really wish I had unlimited characters and could give you a full brief about what’s in store for you when you click that link.

The title I chose was Job Search Obstacles Preventing You from Success.

It is accurate. Technically.

What I share is an obstacle that prevents you from getting everything you want out of your job search.

What I really wanted to title it was…

Andy’s Surefire Method to Show You How Awesome You Are and How Much Meaning Your Life Has and How If You Look at the World This Way You Will Never Have a Sad Day for the Rest of Your Life.

That’s really what the video is about.

Yes, I have a fabulous story about job searching and Susan and how I transformed her interpretation of an assignment she had developing a spreadsheet.

To her, she thought her work activity sounded mundane.

To me, it sounded like she did something important that helped (literally) thousands of music artists get accurately paid (literally again) millions of dollars they were not properly receiving on time or at all.

Not to be fussy, but I liked my interpretation a wee bit better.

Maybe you walk through life this way…thinking you don’t matter much?

No skills or much time required…

I’ve got some great tips today. They’re an orderly set of tips and habits you can implement. The greatest part about these habits is they require no skills and very little time to put in place.

What happens between the time you wake up and the end of the year?

I want to bring you back about a year and a half ago. I wrote a blog post about my two morning tricks to eating the frog. That was about how you get your morning going. You can get off to a great start regardless of your morning routine. It’s all about your mindset.

Toward the end of last year, I did a video and a post about how to reflect your way to success. It was really designed help you look back at the end of each year, reflect on what you learned and what you accomplished. But, the special part about this process is—no matter you did during the year—you will feel great about yourself and all you have accomplished. Yes. It’s that bulletproof a technique. Check it out. (There’s even a great planner download.)

What happens in between your mornings and when you wake up toward the end of the year? You live each day!

How do you ensure you can look back at the end of each year and say, “Wow, what a great year (or great day or great week or great month)?” That’s what today’s session is all about!

The 7 Habits…

Here are seven simple habits to make every day productive.

The first two, in fact, start the night before.

1. Identify three goals you want to accomplish the next day?

Think in advance about what you want to accomplish. The most important aspect when identifying these goals is to make sure there’s an element of completeness.

You don’t want your goals to be goals such as “make progress on my project.” It’s too loose. Focus more on what you need to complete in step one of the project. If step one is too big to complete in one day, then identify the portion of step one.

Whatever it is, just make sure there is some conclusion you can draw and that there is an element of completeness to it.

Also, don’t have too many goals. If you have too many goals, you’ll be chasing too many rabbits and won’t catch any. You get the gist.

2. Schedule your entire calendar for the next day (the night before).

Schedule your day. I stress the word your day.

You will be far less likely to get interrupted by other people’s issues or other people’s requests if you’ve made your plan.

Never ever—I repeat never—check your morning email before your day is scheduled.

If you do that, you’re likely going to run amok and other people’s issues will interrupt your intentions. You won’t be able to work on the key projects or goals you identified.

Also, I recommend scheduling every single minute of your day. If you don’t know what you’re doing between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, schedule “open time” or “buffer time” or “recovery time.”

That will give you a chance to catch up or handle unexpected issues that arise during the day.

3. Identify three things you’re grateful for as early in the morning as possible.

However you start your day, whatever morning routine is, be grateful. Be deliberately grateful.

I get up. Take care of my dogs. Go to the gym to exercise. I come home and meditate. I eat. That’s my routine.

Whether you just get up and take a shower or stretch and have a cup of coffee or dance or whatever, spend a moment to be grateful. It takes a mere minute to write down three things for which you are grateful.

It is physiologically impossible to be stressed and grateful at the same time. You’re giving yourself a chance to be stress-free even if it’s for mere seconds.

Put yourself in the right mindset.

There is another aspect to gratitude. You can be assured gratitude is a wonderful place where there is a force greater than you and greater than I that is always available to you in a positive way.

You will feel better and better things will happen to you and for you. It’s just a wonderful way to start your day.

4. Identify what you accomplished during the day.

After you work your day, write down what you actually achieved related to those three big goals.

Note how that positions you for tomorrow. This will help you plan tomorrow.

5. Consider your lessons of the day.

Write down a couple or three lessons you actually learned for that day.

It’s really, really important to take a few minutes to think about what transpired over the course of the day and what you actually learned.

What did you learn about yourself or your projects or the people you work or what to do or not to do?

If you don’t identify these lessons, you’re not going to feel accomplished and you’ll make the same mistakes.

6. Celebrate your victories.

Write down your three wins for the day.

Give yourself a little brag zone. It’s okay to say, “Wahoo, I accomplished goals one, two, and three!” or “I sold my first project!” or “Our marketing project is complete!”

It could be anything you feel great about accomplishing that day. Just make sure your celebrate something.

7. Identify three things you’re grateful for as late in the day as possible.

Repeat habit three. As late in the day as possible, and I stress as late in the day as reasonably possible, identify three more things you’re grateful for. Preferably, these will be three items from that day (but they don’t have to be).

Later in the day is best because if these are your last thoughts of the day you’ll have a better night’s sleep. You’ll go to sleep, wake up a lot more refreshed, and go into your next day in a much better frame of mind.

I get this one a lot.

"Coach, I’m getting stock [or RSUs, ISOs, PIUs, Phantom, etc. etc.] as part of my compensation package.  How do I value this? How do I gauge what the right amount is?"

FYI…that’s Restricted Stock Units, Incentive Stock Options, Profit Interest Units, Phantom Stock (yes, it’s a thing) and several other variations of stock-ish type compensation.

Before you non-job-seekers cut out me, this post very accurately could have been titled 8 Great Tips to Prove Your Value to Your Employer. So, stay tuned.

Let’s be honest. How many times do we need to remind our own employers of our awesomeness? I don't know about you, but I seem to need to remind my guy every day because he can't remember a thing.

What’s the problem?

Think about the problem. You're sending out your resume and employers aren’t calling you back. Ouch. [I’ve already explained why that is in How to Get Your Resume Noticed in 5 Seconds Guaranteed.]

Although recruiters are a funky bunch and review those resumes quickly, they do notice an impact player when they see one. So, how do we get you to SHOW you’re that impact player?

First, you need a great layout…

C’mon buddy. Where are my 8 Tips?

Think about what employers care about. Who makes an impact in their organization? People who these things…

1. Generate revenue. Employers love people who generate revenue. Do you generate revenue, profits, and acquire new customers? (Check the video for more commentary on this. I won’t say this again for everyone because I hate repeating myself. You get it.)

2. Improve market and brand awareness. Hey marketing-type folks! Are you creating a better-known brand? Measure it any way you can. Is your company getting more inquiries or email addresses? Is your website traffic increasing due to content marketing? Google Analytics anyone?

3. Customer attraction and leads. Inside sellers or anyone on the front end of sales can be opening doors. You might not be closing the deal for your company, but you’re filling your sales pipeline. Any lead generation works. Managing a booth at an industry fair? Are you collecting business cards or starting a customer or partnership relationship?

4. Customer happiness. Service people can rejoice! Maybe you’re a call center operator and helping people who call in because your product or service is broken. You fix it. Voila! What are your customer satisfaction scores? What is your customer retention rate? What about renewals and renewal rate?

5. Corporate growth and security. Let’s not forget the executives. Have you done anything related to supporting an Initial Public Offering, acquisition, divestiture, etc. Is your corporate and online security safer?

6. Employee happiness. Human resources, recruiters, and all who manage employees can focus on happiness. What are those employee satisfaction scores? Are your employees staying? Is your attrition bad or is your tenure really, really great? Are your recruitment numbers good? Are they healthy? Are your people progressing through their careers and going through the ranks and staying with you because you offer such great opportunities?

7. Cost reduction. Yeah baby!! Let’s save some money! Did you do anything to save your company money? That could be anything. It could be optimizing a system that makes you run more efficiently. It could be reducing expenses. Processes you do faster save money.

8. Process efficiency. Optimize anything lately? I mean anything?!? Did you optimize a process that lets the rest of the employees do their job easier or faster? Maybe you're an accountant who figured out a way to reduce your company's month-end closing cycle from fifteen days to seven days. That saves money. It probably reduces mistakes too. All of that stuff is gold on a resume.

But, Andy, I don’t do those activities at work…

Sure you don’t. If you’re thinking there’s no way I can come up with something like this…

Are you a hostess? How many people do you care for and seat and service each night? Over the course of the year?

Are you a mail carrier? How many houses do you deliver the mail to? How many pounds of mail? How many square miles do you cover every single day, year in and year out?

Are you a mechanic? How many cars have you fixed within the last year?

Are you a project manager? What's the size of the project budget? Did you complete it on time? How many people did you manage? How many people did you coach? How many people did you mentor?

We could go all day, but I have a time limit and word count limit and your attention span limit.

Hey, you mentioned a contest or something…

Think about what I said. If you can’t figure out a way to improve your resume, head to the comments section (wherever you’re seeing this) and say…

“Hey, Andy, I’m a [insert title here/perhaps type of company too] and I do [insert what you do] and I can’t figure out how to quantity or show impact. What should I do?”

I’ll respond with advice. If I can’t figure out something for you to add, you can have my resume course & workshop for FREE and any other online training course in the milewalk Academy.

Before we get rolling, I want to express I understand many of you struggle with what questions to ask an employer as well as how to ask them.

This part of the interview—when you get to ask your questions—offers a great chance to sell yourself. It’s also the most important part of getting the information you need to make a great decision about whether the employer is a good for you.

Good vs. good for you!

There are a lot of questions you need to ask and several areas you need to investigate. Is the company a good company? Is it solid in general? Is it a good company for you?

Even though the company is a good company doesn’t mean it’s a good company for you! There are a lot of questions that go along with trying to figure this out.

All good things come in 3’s

When you ask your questions, you should keep these three goals in mind. Every question should be designed to:

1. Sell yourself
2. Get the information you need
3. Get the information as quickly as possible

The faster you get the information the more time you have to get more information. The more information you have the more informed the decision. The more informed the decision, the better the decision. (Whew! That’s a lot of mores!)

A question is never just a question

There is a whole lot that goes into asking your questions, how to organize them, when to use the information and so on. I have an entire free webcast that covers these called 3 Keys to Ace Any Job Interview. See below for details. Go ahead and sign up. I dare ya.

You can protect yourself with your questions

One other aspect I’d like to add regarding why I think this is such a valuable question is it helps you overcome one of the biggest reasons you don’t get hired.

A month or so ago, I shot a video and made a blog post titled The Number 1 Reason Why You Do Not Get Hired. The number one reason you don't get hired is not because you lack qualifications. Chances are very good if you're interviewing you’re qualified.

It's the job candidates’ inability to map how their qualifications align to what the employer needs. Keep that in mind because there is a great chance you can made that misstep in the interview.

What is the question already?

The reason I think this question is a valuable one is because it helps you sell yourself, gets you great information quickly, AND helps you overcome that great obstacle in getting hired.

So, here it is…

“If you were to give me a job offer and I was to accept it, after one year on the job, what would you consider a success? What would success look like to you? Specifically, what will I have accomplished you would consider to be a success?"

Why is this an uber cool question?

This question gives you clarity regarding what the interviewer thinks success looks like.

Now, you can use that insight to reply how you would accomplish that or how your skills or capabilities align to accomplish that success!

You're speaking to exactly how you would to work toward that success and it’s what the interview wants and needs to know. Ultimately, interviewers need to answer, “Will this job candidate be successful in the role?”

Wait! There’s more!

Here's what else it does. If you ask that question to every single interviewer you might get a slightly different answer. At least now you know what that interviewer thinks success is.

Maybe you're interviewing with various people within the organization and they each have different goals or requirements. Now you can align your answers to how it affects that person and his or her interests. (Let's not worry just yet whether or not all their answers are consistent. That's something you can sort out later. The most important thing while you're in that particular interview is to get that interviewer to like you.)

The reason this question is so powerful is because it surfaces for you what each interviewer thinks success looks like. They make their decisions on what they think, not necessarily reality. This helps you overcome the disparity and makes sure they all want hire you—for whatever their reasons might be. :)

When candidates prepare for their interviews, most make the mistake of solely focusing on rehearsing answers to common questions.

Uh, no good.

I’ve got a much more effective way to truly elevate your performance and get better results.

Remember, as I’ve reminded you, oh, I dunno, about a bajillion times, the most qualified candidate often doesn't get the job.

There’s the storytelling part.

Introduce yourself much? In a meeting? At a networking event? How about in a job interview? Yes! Let’s do that one today. In an interview. Ever have difficulty with this? How much? How little? Where to start? When to stop?

It IS important for you to nail this Goldilocks-style. And, the reason introducing yourself is difficult is because it’s SO NOT about how well you know yourself. It’s actually about how well you know the person you’re introducing yourself to!

I’m talkin’ ‘bout the style of introduction that’s the “tweener” between the one-sentence elevator pitch and the full-blown “walk me through your résumé.”

It hurts me when I see people make a mistake.

It practically kills me when I see them repeating—on purpose—the same mistake.

I don’t judge anyone because they made different mistakes than I did.

We’re all different and have walked different paths, experienced different things, and built different perspectives.

I like to think, however, that age and experience have helped me test different theories and note the results.

It’s all around you and it’s difficult to make it tangible.

Although, sometimes, it does seem palpable. Maybe.

Companies think they have it and they’re right.

Except most times they’re not right about the one they have.

What is it?

Culture.

The word itself is meaningless.

The adjectives used to describe it are meaningful.

The behavior that reinforces it is the be-all end-all.

That is, if and only if the behavior matches the actual company culture the organization want to promote.

In The Hiring Prophecies: Psychology behind Recruiting Successful Employees, I wrote extensively about culture, how to define it, build it, promote it, and, of course, outlined the 20 most common adjectives used to describe it. Of course.

But, how is a job seeker or employee gonna notice it?

Whether it matches what they want?

The signs are everywhere.

In today’s podcast, A Story on How a Company’s Culture is All Around You, I share a story (well, you knew that already) about a time I worked with an organization who used a project name as a reminder.

It served as a constant cue to get the behavior they wanted—and needed—to get to where they wanted to go.

What’s up with “TESTS” in job interviews? As if job interviews aren’t rough enough, why, for the love of all that is holy, would employers push us job seekers over the edge with tests?

These “tests” come in all shapes and sizes.

Most of them are ridiculous, but, since I don’t universally run hiring for the world, we’ll need to deal with them.

(Feel free to start a petition if you want to see if you and I can completely reform hiring for all mankind.)

I know you want to know what you should do before you take one of these little buggers.

Spoiler alert: Nothing.

Don’t do anything.

As in anything.

As in no thinking. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Zero brain power dedicated to this.

That’s if the employer wants you to take a personality or aptitude or “fit” test or something of that nature.

If it’s a case study, by all means, knock your socks off.

That’s because those are cool and good predictors for future success.

I pulled today’s clip from one of the 1,478 times I was asked about “tests” during various Live Office Hours sessions.

Today, let’s talk how to answer negative job interview questions.

These are brutal. Tricky. And, to boot, give you loads of opportunity to mess us.

They are literally a complete waste of breath and give the interviewer absolutely zero data on whether you’ll be a star employee.

But, for some unknown reason, instead of asking you bright and effective questions that elicit information to actually help them determine whether you’ll be a winner, they ask you…

• If we hire you, what would be the reason we fire you?
• Why should we not hire you?
• Why wouldn’t you take this job?
• Etc. etc. etc. until your eyeballs roll so high they get stuck in the back of your head.

You get the idea.

Good news is your beloved coach will give you a bulletproof formula for all of these dumb and useless questions.

When interviewing with a senior executive, you need to be ready for different types of encounters.

Here they are:

1. Share yourself. Sharing your own story connects you to the rest of the world. Sharing what you learned and how you were transformed benefits others even if they might do it differently.

2. Be yourself. This is what keeps you connected to you. There is no greater struggle than when what you think, say, and do are not in complete harmony. Think about those times you felt out of sync or not yourself. What was missing? Likely, it was that congruence.

3. Give yourself. This is what connects you to higher powers. It also, oddly, provides the greatest return. This starts with contributing your efforts fully to what you’re going to do and give to the rest of this world. This is giving everything you have to your calling.

Giving yourself—which yields the highest results—requires four components/characteristic:

- Strategy: You have a strategy for where you’re going in life. You seek an understanding of why the world works the way it does in this area. You question everything. You take nothing at face value.

- Mindset: You maintain a particular mindset. You understand limitations are something of the mind, not the universe.

- Practice: Once you have your strategy and no-limits mindset in place, you practice to perfection. By practice, I don’t mean brute force. Brute force or mindlessly working hard will never overcome intellectual laziness. You practice with an extreme sense of deliberation. You practice your craft well past the point of being able to do it perfectly. You practice it to the point you couldn’t possibly make a mistake because you are so dialed in.

- Discomfort: You seem to live in a continual state of discomfort. Of course, I’m not talking about living in pain, but continually pushing yourself so that every day you’re a bit uncomfortable because you’re constantly trying new activities and undertaking new projects that progress you. You embrace this discomfort because you know it will make you a great pioneer.

Ya know that question you get in a job interview, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” I think it comes straight out of the employer interview manual that seems to sit and, unfortunately, not collect dust on their shelves. The overly-thick one with the title “Complete-Waste-Of-Time Questions” embroidered on the spine.

It’s January, which translates to high recruitment season. That means employers are interviewing candidates like crazy.

I have a saying. It’s one of my Today’s Lines to Live By®, which you can catch daily on my Instagram.

“Short-timers focus on wins. Long-timers focus on plans.”

That’s true.

Short-timers focus on wins, which usually causes them to lose. And quit. That’s how they become short-timers. Get it?

Long-timers focus on the plan and the planning process. And, they obsess over abilities they need to grow to add cool checkmarks next to the stuff on their plans.

This, in turn, causes them to grow faster, live happier existences, and, oddly, win more. Or, at least win bigger.

Build strategy. Add plans. Work the plans. Stay the course.

There is one ingredient in working a top-1-%-er plan I consider the secret to the sauce.

Overcome this issue by creating an exhaustive list of questions to ensure you’re covering everything. Make sure to keep asking “Why?” until you can’t ask “Why?” anymore. There is no friendlier, joint three-letter word complete sentence I can think of when it comes to your decision-making prowess.

You had more options but didn’t know it.

You were lazy when it came to investigating all your options. Make sure to think creatively and exhaust all avenues.

INCORRECT INFORMATION

You’re looking where you shouldn’t be (or placing too much weight on the wrong information).

Social Media Sites, LinkedIn, and Corporate Sites (Glassdoor, Vault, Wetfeet) are filled with angriness (mostly). Don’t place too much weight on information where the deck is stacked. Overcome this issue by keeping all you intake in its proper context. And, make sure to do you own investigation before you’re willing to take someone else’s (especially a stranger’s) word for it. This is, after all, your career.

You expect good advice from someone who doesn’t have all the information.

Here’s a scenario. You’ve just given five minutes worth of your (own) bias-filled information to people (a mentor, confidant, co-worker, spouse or whomever) and asked them for advice. If this needs further explaining, go back to You Didn’t Gather Enough Information. They’re now you.

MOTIVES

You weren’t clear (with yourself) on your (own) motives.

Remember your whys! When people go through a lengthy (interviewing) process, for some reason they forget the reasons why they started the process. They also tend to abandon or minimize their (happiness) criteria in favor of the shiny bells and toys the employer has placed in front of them.

You were driven by someone else’s motives.

Don’t do it for your parents, friends, coworkers, spouse, or anyone else. You’ll resent them. This is your life!

FEAR

You fear loss.

You’re worried you’ll lose what you already have (your reputation, easy commute, a job you can do in your sleep, your friendships with coworkers, etc.) Make sure to keep your outlook balanced. You’re gaining much too.

You fear hardship.

Boo hoo this new job will be hard. You’re not sure you’re up for the challenge. Chances are, if a company wants to hire you, you’re qualified and will kick butt if you put some effort into it!

OVERCONFIDENCE

You’re bravado makes you senseless.

Overconfidence stems from many sources, but for our purposes assume it comes from your lack of correct or complete information. Just make sure to investigate wholly and you’ll be in great shape. (P.S. Do not mistake overconfidence for confidence.)

BIASES

You have the status-quo bias.

You have a strong preference to keep your life as-is! You also think any change is a loss of what you currently have instead of a gain for the better. Do not focusing solely on what you’re losing or place greater emphasis than is necessary.

You have the sunk-cost bias.

You’re placing too much weight on time you’ve spent and what you’ve accumulated (something you’ve built, any labor of love, memories, etc.). You need to remove your emotional attachment and rechannel it. One of the easiest way’s to do this is ask yourself, “If I wasn’t currently working here, would this job, or the new one, align better to my criteria?”

Bam. There they are. Eleven nasty ones. I always love to hear from you. What are reasons you think you or others have made poor job-changing decisions?

We’re not in a recession at the moment, but I don’t like to be late to the party.

Even if we enter a recession, I don’t want you to panic for a few reasons.

First, panic doesn’t do anyone any good.

Second, you have me.

Third, there are always opportunities for you regardless of whether your world is zigging or zagging.

You just need the right perspective.

How you look at something has almost everything to do with what you see.

For example, here’s how I process the world…

When the market goes up, people need my job searching services to max out their job opps and crank up their pay.

When the market goes down, people need my job searching services to overcome the more difficult challenges in getting hired.

When some industries zig, others zag. At any moment, some people need my “crank up your pay” services and others need my “overcome challenges” services.

I’m ALWAYS needed.

Think I’m unique? Think again.

Same goes for you.

It’s all in how you choose to look at it.

Recently, Rachel, one of my beloved #BOOTCAMPERS, asked me, “Which industries do you predict are most likely to grow during this economic downturn?”

First, I clarified for her, we are not in an economic downturn.

Sure, the news people might be doing their level best to scare you. That’s the thing about “the news.” They only talk about the tiniest of extremes. If it bleeds, it leads. They’re in business (yes, business) to make money, not be a public service that actually delivers “the news.”

They package up the most sensationalized extremes to get your eyes, ears, clicks, etc. You think what you’re seeing is pervasive and normal. Then you become frightened. Then you call your children and tell them to stay in the house.

Andy Sunshine is here to tell, that while you’re allowed to have rough stretches, all is generally wonderful and he wants to make YOUR world a better place.

So, after I clarified that bit of economic reality for Rachel, I gave her the goods on HOW to think through which markets will thrive and HOW to think through your job search should your particular industry take a turn for the worse.

Budgeted salary…sillier still.

Just like advertised salary, unadvertised salary, and the-salary-we-hope-to-pay salary.

How do I know this?

Let’s see...

Negotiated over 600 employment agreements and salaries as an executive recruiter.

Wait. There’s more.

Of the more-than 3,000 people I’ve personally coached as an international career coach, I’ll estimate, conservatively, 25% of them needed negotiation help.

Either way, roughly 750 more.

Ever been asked, “What’s your expected salary?” Think you know what you’re worth? Many want it. The good life.

The few. They want the great life.

The rest. What’s left. You guessed it. They pursue heights so high most people dismiss them as unattainable.

Whichever group you’re in, I know you’ll eventually pursue some personal Mount Everest.

You know the one I’m talking about. The one that, somewhere along the climb, makes you question your choices.

Whether it’s a project that takes a week that seems like “the longest week ever” or 20 years to pursue your life’s dream, you’re gonna encounter the “B” word.

If you haven’t encountered the B word, you’re probably settling.

Ouch.

True.

Burnout happens.

Ask anyone who’s pursued a worthy dream.

Burnout especially happens during the month of March.

Why March? Seems like such a nice month, doesn’t it?

People generally set lofty goals during January. (Fairly obvi.)

Some quit before the month is over.

Some make it until February before they throw in the towel.

If you’re still hanging on in March…

You guessed it.

Fatigue sets in.

I’m an open-minded person.

BUT, if you want to convince me there is any faster route to getting a job interview, and ultimately an offer, other than boss hunting, you better come armed.

It makes no difference whether you’re a recent college graduate like Venkata (the hero in today’s lesson) or a seasoned pro.

Top to bottom and every which way in between, targeting bosses is your best route to surfacing interviews.

If you’re wondering why, just think about it.

Who is more in pain that you’re not on their team?

The recruiter? I think not.

The Applicant Trashing System? I’ll wait for the deafening silence. Oh. There it is.

Bosses are ALWAYS looking for great talent, whether they have budgeted openings or whether they’d trade out someone on their team for you.

Let’s talk about the second job interview. You know the one. They loved you so much the first time, they invited you back!

I’m going to give you three great tips. These are the exact same three tips I gave one of my Interview Intervention Course students, Hannah. She used them to get the job on her second interview. [Hannah, if you’re watching, shout out to you. Hope you’re enjoying the new job!

For the rest of you, I want you to know the second interviews are not much different—tactically—than the first interviews.

All those videos I’ve created on job interview tactics and my FREE webinar 3 Keys to Ace Any Job Interviewwill teach you how to answer and ask questions in a job interview. Use all that as foundational stuff.

The second interview is about building deeper connections…

The second job interview is about building a deeper connection, a deeper relationship, and more chemistry with the entire company.

It is about getting them to imagine you as part of the team. You want them to feel as though you’re part of the team.

So, how do you do that?

Sometimes when you’re invited back, you are speaking with the same people you spoke with the first time, sometimes they’re new people, and sometimes it’s a mixture.

Use these tactics across the board and adjust appropriately based on who you’re speaking with…

1. Ask Again.

The first technique I would use is when you are speaking with somebody you have previously spoken with (whether on the phone or in an interview).

Ask about something you’ve already spoken about. I call this the “ask again” technique.

Say, “Last time I was here you mentioned [insert whatever here]. It really stuck with me. I thought more about it and I wanted to get more insight into that as it relates to [insert whatever here.] Could you elaborate…”

This starts a deeper discussion on something you’ve already spoken about. Going deeper into the conversation on something both of you consider very important builds a deeper relationship.

2. Ask More.

The second tactic is to ask additional (new) questions. If you are speaking with somebody who you’ve previously spoken with previously, you want to make sure you’re asking him or her a new batch of questions.

If you’re speaking with someone you haven’t spoken with, make sure you have lots and lots of great questions.

You will never run out of questions. Plus, this shows you are well-researched and you are very, very interested in investigating this company further. And, you’re doing it in a smart way.

3. Be Inclusive.

The third tip is to be inclusive of other people. By that I mean, reference conversations you’ve had with others in the organization. [You can even use this in the first round of interviews.]

Whether you’re speaking with somebody you previously spoken with or you’re speaking with new people, one the best tactics you can use is to refer to what you and someone spoke about and then ask for their opinion.

For example, “I talked with Susie the other day and she mentioned [insert whatever here]. I loved that and I’d like to get your insight on that. Could you elaborate on that as it relates to [insert whatever here]?”

Consider the person you’re interviewing. Whether he or she is a subordinate of Susie’s, a peer, or a superior, you can adjust the angle of trajectory of your questioning and take it in the direction of that particular individual.

You’re showing them you enjoyed speaking with Susie, you found what she said delightful, and also want their opinion.

You value their opinion and they with naturally see you as a team player. [You certainly sound like one!]

As you start to reference others in the organization in a sincere way, the interviewer will start to feel like you are part of the team.

As a bonus, this gives you an opportunity to make sure there is a level of consistency across their responses. Are they all on the same page?

I KNOW job searching is tough.

Sad for them, but you should be doing back flips!

It is probably one of the dumbest ways for a job interviewer to open up the interview, but it is one of the best things that could possibly happen to you.

You might be puzzled. I know there are a lot of you out there puzzled because I get the emails and I get the questions on my YouTube channel and blog.

You're wondering how to answer this. You say, “Ugh, I'm not sure where to start. I'm not sure what to say. I'm not sure what to share. I don't want to share the wrong things.”

What you should be thinking is, “Yes. Thank you Mr. Unskilled Job Interviewer for lobbing me that sweet softball question so I can now totally control the interview and dazzle you with my professional highlight reel. So buckle up and prepare to be amazed.”

That's what should be going through your head because you now get to offer up whatever it is you want to share.

Do’s, Don’ts, Always, and Never-Evers…

Before we get into the “here's how,” I want to talk a little bit about the do’s and don'ts to get you positioned in the right spot before you walk them through.

First thing I want you to do is [it's actually before the interview ever starts, day before, week before, whenever it is, I want you to] look at your resume!

1] Look at the job description and determine what areas or activities or accomplishments in your resume most closely align and best suit you to do that role effectively. Think about those.

Grab this tool to help you: Career Achievements Journal: 14 Points That make You Marketable, Get You Promoted, and Accelerate Your Career.

It's got 14 great areas to investigate about any major project you do in your professional career.

It'll provide questions to ask yourself and information to gather that will be wonderful to share [whether with your current employer or a perspective employer].

I want you to think through the resume and how it aligns to what it is they need in an employee. That's the first do.

2] The second “do” is make sure you bring a copy of your resume to the job interview.

It's something a lot of people forget to do, but here's why you need it.

You cannot be sure the job interviewer's actually going to have a copy. Even if he or she does have a copy, it's highly likely they have not read it. I know it's sad, but it's true.

They're that lazy, which is why they asked you to walk them through it. They want you to read it to them. Extra sad face.

3] You also want to make sure before you start you know what direction to go. Ask them.

There are basically three directions you can go through this exercise.

1. You can start at the beginning of your professional life and walk them through your resume up to today. Ask them, “Do you want me to start at the beginning and bring you current?”
2. You can start with today and go in reverse chronological order and work backwards to the beginning of your professional career.
3. You can cherry pick those areas for them to determine whether you’re a good fit for the job and have best prepared you for the role?

They'll probably want you to go from the beginning of time to today, but regardless of which direction, you'll know.

4] Don’t read them what's on the resume. Don't look at your resume and start reading. You'll be very dry.

5] Don't [just] talk about the activities you have on the resume. You'll lose them. You'll lose their attention. It's not that exciting what you were responsible for.

Here’s how to roll…

Once you know what direction they want you to go (most of them are going to want you to go from the beginning of time till today), start going through your resume.

When you start at the beginning (now for many of you I know that was 10, 20, or 30 years ago) remember not all the information on your resume is created equal in helping you get that job. It's not all as relevant.

For those areas, especially the ones at the beginning of your career, I want you to walk through those very, very quickly.

If I was interviewing and someone wanted to interview me for a practice leadership position and asked me to walk them through my resume, I might say, “I got out of college and started working as a programmer and then I became a designer and then I started managing projects that implemented software solutions."

That took me [less than] 10 seconds to go through five years of my career because it's not very relevant!

But, they asked you to start there so that's what you want to do. You want to go through the less critical areas very quickly.

Then, when you get to a spot in your career where you think you have a home run accomplishment or achievement, take your opportunity to shine.

Give them context on what was happening in that project. What did you do? What was the business benefit? Who were you doing it for? Who were you doing it with? How much money did you save them? How much revenue did you generate them?

Get the career achievements journal I mentioned earlier to help you tell that story. It’ll help bring context and color.

Then move onto the next one and so on and so forth.

Oh. I know what you’re thinking…

You might be thinking, “Andy, I could go on for an hour talking about myself, my resume.”

GOOD!

Good, go do that. You get to script exactly what it is that you want to say.

You might be thinking, “I'm not really sure. Maybe I'm running off at the mouth. I might bore them.”

There's ways after you hit each major area in your resume, just take a pause, look over to the interviewer and just say, "Is that enough there? Did you have anymore questions about that? Did you want to discuss that any further? How am I doing? Should I go onto the next point?" Just do what you need to do to give yourself a quick break.

The fact of the matter is they turned control of the interview over to you so you now get to blueprint the dialogue that occurs.

You get to tell them what you want to tell them, not what they want to ask you. That's the wonderful thing about getting asked that question early in the interview.

There is one really common reason you want to change. You’re not doing what you love or what makes you happy (anymore).

You have two major obstacles to making this type of change successfully:

1. You need to become self-aware.
2. You need to determine whether your current employer, current career, prospective employer, or prospective career can actually satisfy your (self-awareness) needs.

Your prescription for part one:

1. Write your “headline” or purpose. Start with what you want to be or build in general terms, but do not include how you’ll accomplish it.
2. Determine why you want that headline. Challenge yourself regarding why you want this and whether your reasons will change in the face of imminent adversity.
3. Identify your “what and why combinations” you need to stay happy as you work to fulfill your headline.

Make sure you:

• Identify your criteria and not someone else’s.
• Include as many criteria (your what/why combos) as possible. The more the better.
• Make each item as low-level as possible. That is, develop them down to the lowest level of why by continually asking yourself why (on each criterion) until you can’t ask why any more.

For those who want to be truly awesome at what “they do,” I’m going to give you my formula for accelerating your career or your life or whatever you want to catapult. Here are the 9 fastest ways to be awesome at your craft based on what I’ve seen works!

Below are the highlights from the podcast. For a more complete explanation of each area, listen here. It’s also available on any major podcast platform.

First, I’m going to assume you actually want to practice your craft. It sounds silly, but most people who reach out to me are miserable, stuck, or a host of other undesirable feelings.

Let’s assume you chose your path correctly. If you haven’t, check out the First Thing To Do When You Want To Change Careers before proceeding.

Let’s roll…

Adjust your attitude. Optimism is something you manufacture from your attitude. Inspiration is something someone else manufactures from your optimism. Your ability to think without limits will help you create those incredible achievements. It’s also what will inspire the others around. See Unlock Your True Potential With These Three Keys.

Identify the most important capabilities. If you simply practice the “how to” do something, you won’t be able to reach the truly elevated heights. Everyone has purchased the “How To Manual.” You need to know what makes the greatest the greatest. Example: Don’t just learn how to sell. Learn psychology. Learn storytelling. Know the sequence people need to hear things so they can understand how your product or service with help them. Be sincere.

Build a Franken-Mentor. I don’t think any one person, as a mentor, will help you reach phenomenal heights. Build yourself a collection of people—live or online—who can help you build your capabilities. I study four people (Burchard, Walker, Hyatt, McLaren). They help me with high performance, product launching, personal platform building, and membership site management respectively. None of these people do anything related to career management or hiring (my areas of expertise). They support the capabilities I need to learn and master.

Train like heck. See the four gents I mentioned above? I’ve spent nearly 500 hours over the past two years studying their material. That’s purchasing their training material, watching and studying it, reviewing their blogs, and so forth. If you use the 2,000 work hours per year rule of thumb (for the average 9-to-5-er), that’s an additional 12.5% training I added to ensure I know what I’m doing.

Practice. Perfectly. You will make permanent what you practice. Make sure you know what makes something perfect before you make it permanent. There are two ways to go wrong here. First, you can practice poorly. Second, you can practice the wrong things.

Choose (or find) the best people to be around. You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely. I’m speaking about actual live people who you see and exchange ideas and banter.

Spend lots of time with Google and YouTube. There is absolutely no excuse why you can’t learn something you want to know. I had no idea how to set up a podcast. I had no idea how to use a DSLR camera before I needed to use one. I knew nothing about lighting. I knew nothing about email marketing. The point isn’t, “I’m great.” The point is, I knew nothing!

Get the right tools. There are so many tools to help you become awesome! They can be organizational tools, research tools, and so on. I recorded this podcast away from office using a cool Sennheiser ClipMic Digital (powered by Apogee) microphone connected directly to my iPhone. It was a new toy I found by accident because I was Googling and YouTubing ways to hook up my Sennheiser Lavalier Microphone. Now I can record these little beauties on the road! It’s also awesome for getting fantastic quality when you’re live on Facebook.

Listen: Listen to the world. Listen to your customers. Don’t ever listen to your competition unless you want to create the same products or services they’re creating. Your greatest opportunities will be found in the sounds of other people's complaints. Solve their problems and you're their hero.

Mistake Alert

Most people think they get hired because of their qualifications. In doing so, they expend so much energy in the interview focusing on their experience before they know which parts of their experience and qualifications the employer is most interested in. At this point, you must be thinking whaaaaaa?

The Obvious

You are in a job interview of some kind. The employer, through its action of spending time to speak with you, thinks you’re qualified—on paper.

The Not-So-Obvious 

You actually get a job interview because of your qualifications. You get the job for three reasons, none of which are your qualifications.

Why Do You Get the Job?

Based on my observation from thousands of interviews between my clients (the hiring companies) and job candidates (prospective employees), I've concluded a candidate's attainment of the job is largely contingent on three often-undetectable success factors:

• The candidate's ability to effectively articulate his or her qualifications and potential contributions (encoding)
• The interviewer's ability to accurately interpret the candidate's qualifications (decoding)
• The interviewer's capacity to remember the candidate (memory)

It all comes down to your ability to communicate how your qualifications match what the employer needs.

The Unfortunate Reality

The reality is you have a greater chance of failing the interview because of a misrepresentation or misinterpretation than you do a lack of qualification.

The 3-Step Fix 

1. Keep the three reasons why you get hired in mind. Awareness and consciousness (of these issues) is key to success. Of course, general consciousness is too. J

2. When asked an interview question, don’t rush to share your awesomeness unless you know which part of your awesomeness the interviewer and employer needs to know. (That is, it doesn’t matter if you’re fantastic. You need to connect the dots for the employer how your fabulousness matches what it needs!) Sometimes the job interviewer’s question is specific and he or she identifies clearly what’s needed. Other times, the interviewer is vague. Make sure to look before you leap.

3. Ask a clarifying question (if need be) to zone in on exactly what information the interviewer needs to know to determine whether you are a great fit. This is especially helpful in the wake of the dreaded and horribly ineffective, “Please tell me about yourself,” question. (See Bonus Section for more.)

Bonus Section 

For junior and mid-level folks who often face the dreaded, “Please tell me about yourself,” question, your immediate response to ensure clarification should be: 

I’d love to tell you about myself. Can you let me know what part of my background would be most helpful for you to know so you can make a good determination regarding whether I’m a great fit for your company?

For senior-level folks, make sure to clarify what the employer considers the most important growth areas (units) within the company as well as what attributes, traits, capabilities, and skills are most important for its leaders.

This puts you at zero…

What's happening when you're job interviewing? You exchange information. You need to have the right responses to the employer’s questions. You need to ask good questions. You need the right background. You need to impress.

When you're a junior- or mid-level resource, that’s typically good enough to get hired. When you're at the senior level, it’s not.

The 3 big keys…

1. It’s about their future, not your past.

You need to get the interviewers, the most senior interviewers, thinking into the future. If you can't get them to imagine what their life will be like and what their company will look like with you there, you'll never get hired.

You can have a great background. You could have been there, done that. That's great. But, if you can't shift their mindset from thinking you’re serviceable to thinking how you’ll catapult them forward, you’re not going to get hired.

How?

One of the easiest ways to shift their thinking is to shift the discussion from your background and your credentials to their goals. Boom.

Where do they see the company going? What exactly do they want to accomplish?

Once you know this, articulate exactly how you will take them there—step by step. Here’s what I would do first. Here’s what I would do second.

2. Leaders are inclusive and inspiring.

You need to be the high tide that lifts all the boats. Leaders build more leaders. They don't build more followers.

You need to show them you're great at inspiring and inclusive. You're great at building teams.

They're probably going to ask you how you’ll build your team. That’s fine. But, I'm talking about giving them that deep, great feeling that having you there will inspire everyone and you're a great person to work with.

How?

First, think about your job interviewing process. Most of these senior-level interviewing processes start with senior people up front (because they don't want to waste anybody's time).

Then you have a middle part, which includes several other people. You’ll interview with colleagues, internal customers, some staff, and so on.

Toward the end, you’ll revisit (or visit for the first time) with a number of the senior folks.

Along the way, you'll be gathering a lot of information as you speak to lots of people.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to show you’re inclusive is to make several references to the other people and the insight they shared!

For example, “Hey, Mary Jane said something about this... It really struck me. I love that idea. Mr. Executive Man, I'd love to get your perspective on that especially as it relates to [insert something else here which better be a more grand something else for a deeper level of insight].”

If you can include a number of references to other people in the organization and the great conversations you've had with them, the senior interviewers will start to see you as part of the team (already). It’s like you’re already working there!

This also reinforces key number one and gets them to look into the future regarding how you’ll be to work with.

3. Stay away from one-and-done questions because then you’ll be done.

You’ll obviously be given a chance throughout the process to ask lots of questions. In addition to asking great questions, you need to avoid asking questions—however awesome they are—that lead to dead ends. If you ask dead end questions, you’ll be a dead end.

Specifically, I mean asking a great question, then receiving their response, and then moving on to the next question. That's the big mistake!

The message you're sending to them is that you are a puddle skipper. You are not somebody who's digging deep to get information and collecting it all. You're not well researched. You’re not digging deep enough to get the information you need to make a good decision. Ouch.

Now, they're starting to imagine how you would be as a leader there. Working with the people in your group or other units and not digging deep enough.

How?

If you have follow-up questions and drill down in your line of questioning, you send the message you are well researched, thoughtful, and making sure you're getting all the information you need to make a good decision.

It sends them the message when you're working with your staff, you will make sure you're getting all the information to make good decisions.

That is something they’ll want so when they give you the autonomy to run your unit or run your division they have confidence you'll be a great researcher, you’ll get all the information, and make well-educated decisions.

If you don’t do this, they’ll think you’re someone who skims the surface and oftentimes makes great mistakes or bad choices because you didn't have all the information.

We’re about to wrap up a big month for hiring.

How’s your job search coming?!

I hope you’re getting those interviews and, today, I have a not-so-little something special to help.

I’m covering one of my all-time favorite questions to ask an employer in a job interview…

“What does success look like—exactly?”

If you don’t know what success looks like, how will you know what goals to shoot for?

How would you know whether you’re working toward the right results?

How would you—or THEY—know how to “grade” your performance?

It absolutely amazes me any organization can function, let alone survive, without knowing the answer to this question for every single person it employs.

BUT (you knew this was coming), you and I know this happens frequently.

Now, I already told you the question—which is the main theme for today’s lesson.

But, how could I have possibly spent 26:32 on this ONE question?

Because, THIS question will become the centerpiece of your entire job search.

And (taking a giant deep breath here to say all this all without pausing so please forgive the upcoming run-on sentence)…

THIS question will make you successful if you focus on it from the time you think about what you want to do with your career to writing your resume and cover letters and LinkedIn profile to choosing which companies and people you target, how you get the interviews, what you say to those nice people in the interviews, and…when you finally ask this question in the interview…to confirm you know what success looks like and on you go to the counteroffer.

I’m pretty sure that’s how I lay it out and everything I ultimately cover in this action-packed, highly-education, pivotal lesson.
