18 Feb 2022Episode 28: Guessing Licenses & Generating Knights01:36:45

This episode it's sequel central at Til Dice Towers - both our sections are flashbacks of sorts to topics we have addressed before.  First off it's a Quiz about licensed role-playing games: ten true-or-false suggestions, just like Episode 4.  This time it's a whole new mix of properties for Ailsa to guess if they really got a tabletop RPG release or if it's absolute nonsense.  It's all brought to us by George's... OK, "George's friend" might be a bit much, but certainly someone he's done a lot of business with and who knows this part of the hobby very well.  Licensing is his middle name!

Next up is a whole new segment for the podcast, as requested by a listener.  We are going to do Character Generation live for King Arthur Pendragon, a game we reviewed way back in Episode 2.  The game of Arthurian knights and a game that Ailsa and George have just restarted playing for the first time in a few years; it's one of the jewels of the RPG world which we highly recommend trying.  If you've never played it before then you may wonder: "how does a typical character generation process work?"  Well sit down and find out as, equipped with the core rulebook and the Book of Knights & Ladies expanded character generation book, Ailsa and George talk through the process and Ailsa produces a player character with lots of character and only a ... minor drawback.

What else can you expect this episode?  Well, we've got a mention of which RPG uses hand puppets, a rant on how we feel about RPG companies getting involved in NFTs, a nostalgic ramble about Wimpy, the eternal battle to talk about King Arthur without Ailsa doing Monty Python references, and even the reveal of what happened to that book George buried in the old Pictish burial ground last time.  Plus: a sponsor that will make life easier for all the conjurers with a low monthly subscription.  Spellcasting is solved!

06 Mar 2022Episode 29: Miniature Madness & Mysterious Mashups01:19:28

We may be a little late (and a little tired) but we got there in the end!  It's Episode 29 of Til Dice Do Us Part and it starts with a return to the Ask A GM mailbag.  The Mailer Daemon might be behaving a bit weird but he still brings us a letter from a player who is finding their GM's constant use of miniatures in every combat irritating.  In our answer we'll talk about the history of miniature use in RPGs, how often we've used them, and even what figure made George's little cousins make an impressed noise.

Then, back by popular demand, we return to something we haven't done in many an episode: one of our X Meets Y style mashups in which we roll a D20 on a list of random DVDs, books and the like that we own and attempt to combine two different properties together to get our creative juices flowing.  This time round we're going to be combining such varied ideas as giant monster movies, eighties zombie films, sixties sci-fi masterpieces, and cosy catastrophes in strange and unconventional ways.  Some of these ideas will be better than others... and some will lead us on very strange side rambles including about King Kong Lives, All Flesh Must Be Eaten and The Two Ronnies.

On top of all that we've got the usual chaos that comes with an episode of this show.  We've got recollections of student union gaming, predictions of what's more likely to be the next big news event in 2022, explaining who Diana Dors is to younger and/or non British listeners, fighting off the Inch High Incel in our usual fly-swatter equipped fashion, and our latest episode sponsor who is going to take you across time and space to share the most tasty treatos.

29 Apr 2022Episode 30: Excellent Princesses & Entangled Plans01:06:15

Covid has come and gone from Til Dice Towers, which means we can finally get back to the studio and record you an episode again!  We are opening with an Elevator Pitch for The Excellents, an RPG of being an Awesome Princess produced by the wonderful people at 9th Level Games.  A game themed around media like She-Ra or Sailor Moon, we talk about the pros and cons of this little game and what happened when we tried running it.  Glitter optional.  (Except for George, apparently)

Then we unexpectedly go to a segment we did only once before and you all seemed to weirdly enjoy: Character Generation. This time we return to Fiasco from Bully Pulpit Games.  We reviewed this game back in Episode 13 and now we are going to show you what it looks like to generate a Fiasco with the aid of the Tartan Noir playset.  Of course, we can't do it with just two people this time so we'll have to enlist one or two members of our cast to help out.  Let's hope they don't have some sort of weird baggage?..

In amongst that is all the stuff you expect from a full hour long episode of this podcast.  There's trampolines!  There's dating advice!  There's a nod to The Big Yin!  There's an explanation of what a See You Jimmy hat is!  Plus there's also a sponsored segment by a man who has taken time out of his busy schedule at Miskatonic University to help bring some calm to your life.

13 May 2022Episode 31: City Musings & Capital Wanderings01:29:11

OK, this trip to London didn't go quite as planned... this episode has been edited in London City Airport while the Til Dice gang awaits the release of the Mailer Daemon from a crime he absolutely definitely did commit.  Still, we recorded some stuff beforehand that we can share with you, including this World Building discussion on the topic of cities.  They are an integral part of our real life and also our fiction - so here's some tips to help you design cities that are hopefully as worthy of adventure as Ankh-Morpork, Lankhmar, Greyhawk and... Aberdeen?   Along the way are all the references you can expect from a serious RPG podcast - you know, stuff like Hachikō and licensed brothels and why you need strong drill bits to put a curtain rail up in a Glasgow house.

Then our roadshow episode gets even more on the road as we share with you our London Travelogue. We give you our thoughts from some parts of the city that may be of interest to our listeners.  This includes discussing some of the local geek and gaming shops like Leisure Games and Orc's Nest, but also some of the other sights that we think of as interesting or inspiring.  We aren't doing it alone either - Tuppy shares her thoughts on which department store has the worst decor, the Mailer Daemon recalls the best thing Aleister Crowley ever did, and Twike is too busy freaking out about London problems to tell us about someone who has been following us on all our socials.

On top of that you've got references to art of both the classy and non-classy variety, a tirade about the opening hours of chocolate shops on bank holidays, some political commentary from Tuppy on Border Force, the appearance of a strangely familiar sounding voice behind a till, and even a little cut back to Scotland to see what the team at Shoved Granny Games are working on... and what it doesn't have any of.

23 Dec 2022Episode 32: Vehicle Viewpoints & Theme-Park Trauma01:43:51

After slaving away at a hot laptop, George and Ailsa bring you a bumper episode out of Til Dice Towers just in time for Christmas.  Why not download this while you are travelling home to see family or friends and hear us talking about... well, travelling, as we discuss World Building and how the differing methods of getting around your campaign world can have a whole lot of knock-on effects on the rest of your game.  Such Christmas-y topics as Icelandic volcanoes,  methods of transport the Simpsons ruined and rock songs about time dilation.  Plus you can find out which member of our cast doesn't travel well by sea.

After that it's into one of our Elevator Pitch segments which comes with a content warning for suicide, human remains and child endangerment.  Here, we take time out of being stuck in a theme park to tell you about a roleplaying game that's about being stuck in a theme park.  The game is The Happiest Apocalypse On Earth by Christopher Grey, and we're here to give you some insight on the game from having both read and played it.

Along the way we'll catch up with some of our extended cast to find out what they've been up to, discuss the favourite feel good comedy of the Nether Realms, some love for Figment the Dragon, some worrying Secret Santa presents that are perhaps less useful than we'd like, and even a little bonus Christmas gift for our listeners in the form of an extra segment. Plus a sponsored segment with one of our cast giving you a taster of the second series of their own show with a pretty dreadful guest star from the Domains of Dread.

31 Jan 2023Episode 33: Caledonian Campaigns & Edinburgh Escapades01:26:55

“The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley", as Robert Burns once said, but we've just about managed to get an episode published for January.  Join the gang at Til Dice Towers as we talk roleplaying games but also Scotland in this latest Ask A GM - with Graeme from Vancouver asking us what is the most Scottish roleplaying game.  That's a surprisingly complex question.  What great games are written about Scotland?  What great games are written by Scots?  What fictional properties and characters are more Scottish than you think?  Join us for some patriotic patter.

Then you can join us on our Edinburgh Travelogue.  We are nipping across to the East side of Scotland and its capital city to have a wander around the historical monuments and nerdy shops as we take you on a trip through the city we are forced to admit is prettier than Glasgow.  We'll tell you what Edinburgh Castle is built on top of, take shelter in Black Lion Games from a depressing familiar face, and even find time to give some food reviews.

Along the way you will learn the answer to questions like: what connects Tony Blair and James Bond?  What author of "Scotch" fiction did George pick a fight with on Twitter?  What street in Edinburgh is the Mailer Daemon determined to visit?  Who arrives at our door to be our first footer?  Most importantly of all, what Antipodean Adventurer has got a slot in our advert break to tell you all about his hunt for the most famous of Scottish cryptids?  Crikey!

16 Jun 2023Episode 34: Family Gaming & Faux Fairy Tales01:19:29

Our usual podcasting pair becomes a talking troika in this episode, as we are joined by education writer and RPG creator DC Bradshaw.  With his help we aim to answer an Ask A GM in which the listener enquires about introducing roleplaying games to an audience of children and how you can tailor your rules and setting towards them.  Since DC Bradshaw has written his very own D&D-for-kids version of 5E, "Little But Fierce", he's the perfect person to help us answer this question - even if he visits the podcast by a slightly unorthodox transport method

After that, it's a Til Dice staple in the form of a  Quiz.  But with three people in the room the format changes up - George and Ailsa must team up to answer questions posed to them by their guest, who has brought ten lines of RPG game text that have been bowdlerized into something more "family friendly".  Can the Til Dice Team work out what the games in question are and roughly what the sentence should be?  What games have fluffy bunnies, chocolate milk and Cyril Sneer been inserted into?

Along the way you can expect the usual mish-mash of in-jokes, references, side-rambles and flensing knives.  Find out which member of the Til Dice team has to be a stand-in Carol Smillie, who deals with the Inch-High Incel when he interrupts three people simultaneously, what colours of box the 80s D&D starter sets came in, and what Twike's important question to ask a guest is.  On top of all that, this episode's sponsored segment sees Acerarak the Demilich makes a return - and he wants to take five children into a world of pure imagination.

22 Dec 2023Episode 35: Price Postulations & Taste Testing01:14:49

We couldn't let 2023 end without giving you another episode - even if George has been haunted by some ill tidings of late - and so here we are with a rather chaotic episode we hope you'll still enjoy.   First up is a Quiz, where George once again asks Ailsa to guess the prices of the random nerdy tat he has purchased.  (With a slight twist, this time - only 6 items are actually purchased, the seventh is a sort of red herring!)  Join in on our social media to see the pictures of the items and work out if you would want to be the owner of some of them too - and if Ailsa thinks George was ripped off.....

After that we have a first (and possibly only) appearance of Twike's Tasty Treatoes as a real, honest to goodness section of the podcast.  Yes, the Social Media Goblin herself is in charge of a chunk of this episode and has some food and drink for Ailsa and George to try - and frankly, it has more RPG content than the previous section, so who can complain?

Along the way you'll find out what happened to Beboke the Goblin; discover what animal is used in the Inch High Incel's vitamin supplements; question if we could have done more to edit the chewing out; made a reference to Cleopatra (the girl group, not the queen) and hopefully had a bit of fun after a long period of no Til Dice activity.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!  We hope to produce more content in 2024 for you all.

23 Nov 2020Episode 1: Night Witches & Nervous Players00:40:50

Our podcast makes its start with the first of many Elevator Pitches to introduce you to games you may not be familiar with.  This time it's an introduction to Night Witches, a historical game of female pilots battling Nazis on the Eastern Front of World War II.  (Terrible accents optional for you, mandatory for us.)

We then move on to our agony aunt section Ask a GM and the topic of how to deal with a group of players who won't make any decisions.  What do you do when they spend an hour agonizing over every T-junction like it's playing chess with death?  How do you get things moving and why does this happen in the first place?

All this and a specially curated advert for dice that don't affect your Ph balance!  How's that for an opening salvo of geekery?

11 Dec 2020Episode 2: Warriors of Britain & Wheelchair Users01:01:03

This time round we bring you another Elevator Pitch  - if Ailsa can stop making Python references long enough - and introduce you to King Arthur Pendragon,  the Arthurian adventure game by the late Greg Stafford.  We give you some pointers as to whether or not this game would be your cup of tea, both from Ailsa's perspective playing it and George's recollections of running it.

There's also a chat on the topic of Disability in Role-playing Games, inspired by Sara Thompson, the Combat Wheelchair rules she released for D&D and the Twitter storm that followed.  How have role-playing games past and present addressed the topic of disability?  How can you make your game more inclusive and accessible to all players?  Why is there a tiny voice coming out of the floorboards trying to pick a fight with us?
<Note: we got some stuff wrong in this section, which is rectified in episode 5.  Audio to that effect is now added to this episode.>

Plus we set aside some time for this week's special sponsor who wants to tell adventurer tourists where they should be going to raid the best tombs this season.

23 Dec 2020Episode 3: Pick 'n' Mix & Player Paranoia00:59:56

We start the show off with an aid to your imagination via our  X Meets Y section, in which we use our TOP SECRET FORMULA to come up with adventure and campaign ideas.  Marvel as, armed with a D20 and no script, we come up with some brand spanking new ideas as we record!  Be inspired to try the same thing yourself!  Doubt that we really did manage to combine medieval literature and 60s sitcoms without any prep!

There's also another installment of Ask A GM, in which we address a listener question on how to handle a group where no-one seems to trust NPCs.  How do you deal with a player group who believe everyone is in league with the Big Bad, from arch-mages to Poblin the goblin?  How does this come to pass and can you as a GM get things back on track?  What if on one or two occasions, their paranoia is right and you the GM might be part of the problem?

There's even time for Shoved Granny Games to tell us all about their amazing new Kickstarter which gives one of the greatest computer games ever it's own RPG.  It looks to be an even bigger hit than their Play-By-Post Jenga system.

08 Jan 2021Episode 4: Licensed Lies & Rocking Roleplay00:52:27

Things might be a bit dark right now but the first show of 2021 opens with a bit of a laugh as we do our first Quiz section.   This episode's theme for the quiz is Licensed RPGs - George has got a list that includes some genuine games and some balderdash books, but can Ailsa tell them apart?  Feel free to play along, and possibly bemoan the games that shouldn't exist but do and vice versa.

After that frivolity it's time for another Elevator Pitch, with small press game Umläut: Game of Metal that lets you play out your dream of being in a heavy metal band.  Even stranger, it does it with a GM-less system from a boxing game.  Ailsa takes some time to talk about her love of music while George mostly just tries to find excuses to talk about Space: Above and Beyond again.

All this and the usual mixture of insanity including an advert that offers you the solution to the problem of over-knowledgeable adventurers easily outmatching your dungeon's boss monster.  Praise Saint Duncan of the Paintbrush!

22 Jan 2021Episode 5: Core Rules Quiz & Clashing Characters01:00:00

Another Ask a GM  question has come to us - from a different source than usual - and it asks us about playing in a game where one character just doesn't gel with the rest.  You know the type: the Paladin in a party full of rogues, the loner superhero in the middle of a focused team or the Inch-High Incel in the cast of a socially liberal podcast.  How do you deal with a game group that's pulling in two different directions?  Is it better to stop it happening in the first place?

Then there's another Quiz, but this time around it isn't a "True or False" affair.  We've got a copy of the D&D Third Edition Player's Handbook out for the first time in a decade and Ailsa has to correctly deduce some sentences from therein.  George has cunningly replaced some words or phrases with fraudulent ones and you'll never spot the subtly disguised sentences!  (OK, maybe you will. )

On top of that's there's an update on Episode 2's section of Disability, with some news and some apologies; there's an appearance by everyone's least favourite 25.4mm tall Men's Rights Activist; and we get a blast of the television event that's helping all the cool cats and kittens in the future deal with their own plague outbreak.

05 Feb 2021Episode 6: Romantic Worldbuilding & Raunchy Quizzing01:02:54

Content Warning: Sex, Relationships, Sex Work, Pregnancy, Homophobia & Transphobia.  No explicit language is used in this episode.

Valentine's Day sees us do a slightly more risqué episode of the podcast, such as a section on World Building where we focus on how to be inspired in creating your characters and game worlds by questions of sex, sexuality, relationships and the like.  So much of human history and our media is dependent on our understanding of these topics but all too often they get skimmed at the table.  How can you design interesting cultures and species that bear in mind S-E-X?  Does your Elven pantheon have an issue with homosexuality?  Did those Rigellians develop the idea of marriage when they need four different biological sexes present to make a baby?  Why is that Swan running away from the Child Support Agency?

In a change to previous episodes, Ailsa takes on the role of being in charge of the Quiz.  She then instantly reveals why she cannot be trusted with power as her idea of a Quiz topic is to complete quotes from the D&D 3rd edition third party supplement book The Book Of Erotic Fantasy.  We will try and talk a little about the contents of this book and its strengths, but it may be hard for George to focus when Ailsa is dropping references to 1970s children's entertainers into proceedings.

In the mix there's also a summary of some lovely listener comments and reviews, a Valentine's Day card from a mystery admirer, a brief summary of what a Carry On film is for non-British listeners, proof that only one of us can do a content warning successfully, and an advert from this episode's sponsor for a community poorly served by existing dating solutions.

19 Feb 2021Episode 7: Hockeysticks & Her Majesty's Service00:49:29

No content warning required for this episode as we go back to basics - or is that back to school?  Find out in our Elevator Pitch in which we discuss Hellcats & Hockeysticks, a roleplaying game of anarchic schoolgirls in a decidedly British vein.  We discuss our experiences of this game - George in running it, Ailsa in playing it - and why we think you should give it a spin

Then we go back to a section from Episode 3 as we run another X Meets Y style mashup.   It's our special method of getting the creative juices flowing and we do it live, with only a couple of edits to insert in comments George forgot to say at the time because he is a wally. With a d20, a pile of books/DVDs/computer games and some very tenuous improvisation we get to creating some ideas on the fly to show you how you can brainstorm your own new ideas when you are feeling stuck in a rut.

Before the episode ends we also manage to get in a few of our supporting cast to say a few words, as they have grown so big we now have some administration issues involving them.  There's also an advert from the eatery that's bringing the taste of the twelve-level labyrinth direct to your plate.

05 Mar 2021Episode 8: Real Adventures & Rules Lawyers00:55:50

Once again it's a battle of wills as George runs Ailsa through another Quiz of a tabletop persuasion.  This time it's a True or False on a list of ten module titles, some of which are genuine pre-packaged adventures available for sale for a variety of high profile systems and others are terrible puns, rephrased titles and just terrible word vomit from George's imagination.  Can Ailsa puzzle out the answers correctly, and will you take her side when she reveals the shameful opinion George holds, beyond even the purest imagination?

After that (and a small scare of George boring us with dice chat) it's on to Ask a GM where a listener has asked us to help deal with Rules Lawyers and the chaos they can bring to a game when someone insists on a thirty minute argument about whether or not you get a charging bonus if you attack from a runaway shopping trolley.  Are they a new phenomenon?  Do they turn up in some games more than others?  Can you find a way to turn their powers to good?  Can we somehow jam in a reference to Football despite having minimal knowledge of any sport chat whatsoever?

Apart from that it's the same mish-mash you've come to expect.  There's delivery of letters, tirades about gluten-free bread, a surprise reference to Chick Lit, the definition of a Scottish word that foreigners may not be aware of and even  an advert for a service that offers peace of mind the next time you need the aid of a 9th Level Cleric.

19 Mar 2021Episode 9: Warrens & Word Use01:04:13

Things are a bit manic here at Til Dice Do Us Part Headquarters so we don't have time for much prep - we just have to leap straight into our next Elevator Pitch, even if Ailsa's introduction is.... a bit suspect.  But don't let that put you off - we've got a lot to say about The Warren, a game which lets you roleplay out the life of rabbits with a heavy dose of Watership Down.  Find out what we make of it, how the rules handle lagomorph adventures, and what noise George makes when a Python reference slips in.

There's also another bit of World Building chat, this time on the topic of languages and how to use them in games beyond just saying "Erm, I know Common and Elven".  We're not suggesting you go full J.R.R. Tolkein but there's things you can do to help make a richer world - such as digging into why your characters know the languages they do and what power a few words of slang have to set the tone.  Along the way we'll touch on Nadsat, Polari, tlhIngan Hol, and the youth-talk of Neo-Gotham.

Also, Shoved Granny games have partnered with us yet again!  They assure us this game idea is much better than their last few and that you won't hesitate to back their Kickstarter for a game based on a BAFTA award winning drama.  It's the bomb!

02 Apr 2021Episode 10: Gallifreyan Gaming & Active Alliteration00:59:06

There's a heavy concentration of Arton energy, temporal phenomenon and wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey nonsense going on at Til Dice Do Us Part HQ.  Hop into George's rather, erm, unique time machine and join us on an Elevator Pitch for Doctor Who by Cubicle 7.  Learn how you can battle a Dalek with only six-sided dice, marvel at how useful running away can be as a life skill and discover just how different things are in the year 3021.

After that we'll leap into the past for another Quiz, where the theme is games with alliterating titles.  There was a stage when it seemed every second roleplaying game was doing it and so Ailsa is asked to identify the true titles from the balderdash books in this little game that you can play at home.  George has some easy questions but also some hard ones, though perhaps none as hard as "What even is a crawdad, anyway?"

The usual mixture of characters, jokes, geeky references and Scottish accents fill out the rest of proceedings.  Except the episode sponsor, in which you're going to hear about fierce runway looks that will be lost in time.  Like tears... in rain.

16 Apr 2021Episode 11: GMing For Beginners & Gothic Gaming00:49:11

It's time to crack open the mailbag again as the Mailer Daemon brings us another letter for Ask A GM.  This one is from Jon from Yorkshire, who is taking their first steps into running games but is having some issues preparing to play and assembling a group.  Some of this is general advice and some is more Covid-specific problems - how do you assemble a group in a era when you can't go to your local gaming group?  Hopefully Jon and others will find value in this, and maybe you'll have your own suggestions to offer.

Speaking of listener interaction, you can also join in this episode's Quiz.  Ailsa is challenged by George with a White Wolf-related game.  Which of the listed game titles are real RPGs published by White Wolf or it's subsidiary companies?  What is a real product for the eyeliner wearing 90s goth who enjoys listening to Nine Inch Nails, watches The Crow and drinks cider & blackcurrant?

Otherwise, it's a pretty typical episode of Til Dice Do Us Part.  There's stories from our experience in roleplaying games, discussion of the television in the nether realms, an ode to the greatest 90s sci-fi TV show, a Shakira reference and an advert for a product that will fill a hole in the market left by the Coronavirus lockdowns.

30 Apr 2021Episode 12: Mental Health & Mischievous Monsters00:49:01

Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of mental illness, eating disorders, and self-harm.  If you are affected by any of the issues discussed and are struggling, please contact The Samaritans, Mind, or Breathing Space for support.

We get things going this week - with a brief interruption involving Tuppy name-dropping - with a serious discussions about Mental Health in Role-playing Games.  Most gamers have at least dabbled in a game that has rules for sanity loss, acquiring mental illnesses or battled against a foe whose justification was "ThEy'Re CrAzY!", but how do you deal with a real world issue in a respectful way?  How have different games handled it mechanically and how would we suggest you approach it at the game table?

Things don't stay this serious too long, though, with another Quiz to lighten the toneThis time round, Ailsa has to identify ten monsters from their descriptions in the 1st Edition AD&D Monster Manual: but George has replaced their proper names with his usual mixture of nonsense.  Come play along and see if you can also work out what monster has more hit dice than Tiamat, what Muppet-related errors George makes, and what Monster Manual entry is just too giant for Ailsa to stay focused.

All this and we've got appearances by almost our entire roster of characters - Mailer Daemon, Twike the Social Goblin, Tuppence Juniper-Smythe and even Mrs Shawney.  We'll be on our guard to keep the Inch-High Incel out of the episode, though to be honest once you see what George has lined up for the mid-episode intermission you might think he's not the worst thing to ever appear in this podcast.

14 May 2021Episode 13: Wacky Fiascos & Wish.Com Guessing01:02:45

Some of you may have superstitions about the number 13, but we hope this vaguely luck themed episode isn't an ill omen for you!  It commences with a little intro to the show for anyone who is new before we leap into another Elevator Pitch.  This time we're discussing the game Fiasco - the game of crazy schemes, plots gone wrong and screwball comedy in the vein of a Coen Brothers movie.  Ailsa and George will try and talk you through the games and what they think are its strengths and weaknesses - though Ailsa thinks she might need some other people to help demonstrate...

After that, there's the most money ever spent on this show up until this point as this episode's Quiz involves guessing the price of some items George bought onlineBorrowing more than a bit from Ashens and Cheapshow, George has purchased some items by typing some geeky terms that come up on this podcast into the website of the terrifying traders of tat that is Wish.Com.  Can Ailsa guess roughly how much each item cost in a "Price is Right" style game?  Are any of these weird and wonderful items actually worth us keeping?  Maybe your luck will hold out and you can guess better than her!

Along the way you can learn which of the Til Dice cast is best at unarmed combat, what sweets are the preferred nibble of goblins, and how you can quickly and easily get a new monstrous creature delivered direct to your door in no time at all.

28 May 2021Episode 14: Animated Amalgams & Golem Gaming01:01:17

It's been a while since we did one of our X Meets Y Mashups so lets get our D20 table of random TV shows, books, films and other media to see what we can do!  George and Ailsa will try, with no preparation, to combine two franchises together for inspiration in creating RPG characters, adventures and campaigns.  This time round we've got two Anime staples, a French comic book classic, and a film that almost killed the main star.   Expect some odd ideas ahead!

Then it's time to cue the Imagination sound effect as Ailsa leads us into another Elevator Pitch.  We're looking at Promethean: The Created - a more obscure White Wolf game than their more famous efforts of Vampire or Werewolf, but one we are big fans of and have ran some enjoyable session with.  Let us explain about gaming as a golem, robot or animated cadaver trying to find a soul - and let us also tell you what horrors are happening in our spare room when we left the Inch High Incel unsupervised

Along the way we'll tell you which anime film is better than its original manga version, which sci-fi RPG author is a bit of a wrong 'un, what exciting things we get up to on holiday.... oh, yeah, and we also take a trip out into the wilds for a piece of Gonzo Journalism, D&D-style.

11 Jun 2021Episode 15: Bestiaries Quintupled & Bait and Switch Games00:51:41

Maybe your brain is struggling in the summer heat, but we hope you can still give our latest Quiz a go.  This time round, George has prepared a list of monsters where some but not all first originated in Monster Manual V - yes, third edition got up as far as a fifth Monster Manual!  Ailsa is going to have to rack her brains to deduce which of these bizarre creatures are just bizarre enough to have been invented in the dying days of an edition when you've got to somehow fill out one more book.

After that, everyone's favourite Daemon comes along with the mailbag to let us get into another Ask A GM.  Jessica has sent in a message asking what to do when you take part in a game that has the GM explicitly promise you one thing - say, a totally non-supernatural murder mystery - only to deliver another thing when they turn around and say "SURPRISE!  THERE'S ZOMBIES!"  What sort of twists are a twist too far, and how can players and GMs make sure their expectations sync up?

Before the episode is finished we'll also have time to find out how Twike has taken to her role as occasional Quiz sound effect assistant, hear two thirty somethings in hysterics over an exploding cow, discover the name of the game that was possibly George's worst experience as a player, and even see a return of a previous sponsor who has a new product for all the ladies out there who want to roleplay like a girlboss.

25 Jun 2021Episode 16: Differing Investment & Dear Editor00:56:19

Another fortnight has passed and once again the Til Dice Do Us Part gang are here!  Let's open up proceedings with an Ask A GM and get the mailbag open - if Ailsa can arrive on time - and find out how to deal with a group where not everyone has the same level of investment in your setting.  What do you do when one person knows everything about Marvel superheroes and another person can't remember which one is the big green one?  How can you keep everyone in the group happy and avoid anyone complaining or switching off?

Letters are also the theme of our second section as we do a Quiz themed around the letters pages of gaming magazines.  George has ten letters, each with a word or phrase changed - can you guess what the real topic of conversation was in each letter?  Along the way we'll talk about gaming magazines from the early days of the hobby along to the present day and find out what nerds were moaning about in days gone past.

George will also talk about the game he had the least fun in as a player, Ailsa will offend two separate sci-fi fandoms, the Mailer Daemon will make multiple appearances, a celebrity drops in to say what they want from Til Dice, and there's a special government information piece in the sponsored segment.  #handsfacespace

09 Jul 2021Episode 17: Appetising Adventures & Chipper Chums00:50:23

Summer is here, and maybe you're out and about enjoying some barbeque foodstuffs or picnics, so we've got a food themed episode to get your geek taste buds going.  First up is a World Building segment in which we discuss how to incorporate food into your settings when you are designing cities, countries, cultures and planets.  What sort of food are your players likely to find in a local tavern or restaurant?  How can you encode little bits of game data in the food that they are served and how it is served?  And what setting did George once bake themed cookies for before playing in it?

After that we have an Elevator Pitch in which we have food right in the title of the game!  We talk about Lashings of Ginger Beer, the Enid Blyton-esque roleplaying game of plucky kids solving mysteries in Idyllic England™.  British listeners will need little explanation of this premise but, have no fear overseas chums, Ailsa will do her best to explain it.  (If she can keep herself from singing the Famous Five theme tune from the 70s series.)

In amongst this we have the usual things you can expect a typical RPG podcast to refer to:  Traveller's dog aliens and their diets, Scooby Doo, T4 On The Beach, our insurance limitations,  the Basque region, and of course our episode sponsor who will show you how to be a Dungeon Goddess.

23 Jul 2021Episode 18: Responsible Consent & Ribald Darkness01:08:46

Content Warning: This episode contains brief references to sexual assault, violence, racism, torture, starvation, child death, mental health, panic attacks and drug use.  There is no detail to these mentions and no explicit language is used.

Get your children out of the room, switch off Granny's hearing aid, and make sure that your boss can't hear what's on your headphones as we have some more risqué content for our 18th episode!  That's not to say there isn't practical chat though, as Ailsa and George have a very long discussion on Consent In RPGs.  How do you make sure everyone is comfortable at your table, whether it's obvious triggers or more subtle ones?  We've got some personal experiences to share on this topic, as well as some ideas from the fantastic free PDF Consent in Gaming, which we highly recommend you grab.

After that Ailsa is taking on a different role than usual as she hosts a Quiz in which George is asked questions on the Book of Vile Darkness, the third edition D&D book that went full grimdark leather-and-gore edgelord after the game had spent a decade playing it safe to keep angry mums at bay.  Some of this adults-only D&D book ended up bleeding into mainline D&D books of the era, but other bits.... well, turns out 2002 was a different planet, you know?  Why not play along and see if you can get the questions on arch-devils, posing pouches and Ed Sheeran correct.

You can also expect to hear Tuppy read from a barely amended Video Standards Council Script, Twike get very excited about an Indiana Jones themed video, the Mailer Daemon get really angry about a potato peeler, the Inch-High Incel battle with insulation foam, and an advert for two ladies who you maaaaaaybe shouldn't look up on your work computer.

06 Aug 2021Episode 19: Gaming Inspiration & Gig Economies00:57:52

Sometimes this podcast brings you carefully planned items with meticulously honed scripts.... and sometimes we just wing it, as we do in this episode's X Meets Y segment.  Once again George and Ailsa have a list of 20 books, films, TV shows and games and they're going to try and randomly combine some pairs together to come up with some gaming inspiration.  Hear us combine Netflix shows with  Bill Murray vehicles!  Wonder how we'll fuse respected English books with well-known manga series!  Even if our ideas aren't to your liking, hopefully the process will still be interesting as we brainstorm live.

Then we ask you sit down for an Elevator Pitch about a game worth breaking the time-space continuum for as we cover indie time travel RPG  Time & Temp.  This little game combines comedic time travel antics with the reality of being a millennial stuck in temporary employment in a fusion we think you should hear more about.  It seems some other people want to talk about it too, as some suspiciously older looking people are skulking around the Til Dice studio while we record...

On top of all that we've got time loops, Paul Hardcastle number one songs, time loops, admiration for Natasha Lyonne, time loops, Blackadder and time loops.  Plus we've got a sponsor that will help you learn spells from home at an affordable rate, because every podcast gets sponsored by them eventually.

20 Aug 2021Episode 20: Choose-Your-Own-Adventure & Carbon-Copy Characters01:00:54

George might be a little.... blood-lossy, but he's still going to try and run Ailsa through a Quiz segment.  We are talking about the choose-your-own-adventure style adventure gamebooks that so many of us grew up with - whether it was Fighting Fantasy books or more Famous Five.  It seems everything had game books made of it in the 80s and 90s... or did it?  With our true or false quiz we're going to see if we can spot the accurate adventures from the lying librums - will you be able to keep up with Ailsa?

There's also a visit from the Mailer Daemon who brings us another Ask A GM message scroll.  This time our anonymous contributor is unhappy about a player who always picks the same type of character, no matter the game - for example they always play an Elf Ranger, or always choose a Dwarf Fighter etc.  How should a GM cope with someone who turns up with Thognar the Barbarian XIII for their next Blue Rose campaign?  Is it even really a problem?

Mixed in with all this is controversial discussion on the best Crystal Maze host, a comparison between role-playing games and Derry Girls, a contractual update from Mrs Shawney,  some more inspiration for Frank and Bunty of Shoved Granny Games, and a sponsored segment with one of our cast trying to branch out with their own show.

A short hiatus may follow, but we'll be back as soon as George heals up!

We're back!  We've rested our bodies and minds and healed any alligator inflicted injuries, so it's time for Til Dice Do Us Part to resume!  Our first episode back is also our Halloween special, and we start proceedings with a bloodcurdlingly brilliant  Elevator Pitch.  The game we are talking about this time is Spooktacular by Yaruki Zero Games, a retro-clone that recreates the long out-of-print Ghostbusters RPG. Ailsa and George will give you a guide to this rules package which gets the mechanics of this game in your hand for a reasonable sum, just as soon as they can get the television to work...

After that we've got a Quiz themed around the most horrifying films of 1980s UK culture - the Video Nasties, a list of films which were apparently so shocking that they were banned from distribution on VHS for a time.  The tabloids loved shrieking about them and their lurid titles - but are they really any worse than those of RPG books?  Ailsa has to determine that very question as George gives her a list of ten titles, some of which are Video Nasties and some of which are official RPG products.  How many can you identify? How many will bamboozle Ailsa? How many will offend the Mailer Daemon?

Along the way we will very much slip into old habits as our episode also includes such discussion topics as: what was the first RPG officially translated from Japanese to English; what George has Ailsa saved as on his phone; a controversial opinion on rarely appreciated Rocky Horror sequel Shock Treatment; and what George thinks the biggest crime of James Raggi is.  On top of that our TOTALLY REAL episode sponsor this week is here to tell you why that British schoolboy with the forehead scar is Totes Suspish.

12 Nov 2021Episode 22: Partnership Presents & Camp Carnage01:08:02

The secret is out - Ailsa and George got a Civil Partnership!  This special episode of Til Dice Do Us Part takes you right into the thick of the geek social event of the decade, where the great and the good are all in attendance.  We're going to take you to our hotel room right after the ceremony for a little Quiz where we'll be guessing the prices of some high quality, much desired items.... OK, no, actually it's more tat from Wish.Com, but hey - it's the thought that counts!  (Also the beep-boops, and everyone's favourite beep-boopist).

Then it's time for an Elevator Pitch broadcast straight from the honeymoon home of our intrepid hosts.  Here they'll be getting cozy in their log cabin and telling you about Dread, the horror roleplaying game by The Impossible Dream.  (Hey, just because Halloween was last episode doesn't mean we can't be spooky again!)  It's got a very unusual core resolution mechanic which involves no dice or cards, but does involve a Jenga tower.  No, don't run away - it's actually really clever!  (Also if you run away you might have an accident, like all those teenagers in the cabin next door...)

In amongst all this you can find out why Ailsa and George got their Civil Partnership in Edinburgh, not Glasgow, which of our cast looks "masterful", what Twike considers to be good and bad sound effects, why George and Ailsa always laugh at the word "bobcat", and even a little sponsored segment by an elite grooming product for the Dwarf population.

26 Nov 2021Episode 23: Challenge Ratings & Cliffhangers01:01:44

Honestly  - we were only away for a week and it's absolute chaos here at Til Dice Do Us Part studios!  We can still knock together an episode however, and in amongst the pandemonium we've got another Quiz for you.  This time it's Play Your Monsters Right: a format inspired by the old British quiz show Play Your Cards Right  (or Card Sharks if you want to get North American about this) in which Ailsa has to try and guess if a given monster from the 3rd Ed D&D Monster Manual is stronger or weaker than the previous one.  Come find out how weak a Kobold is, what George has spent the Ko-Fi money on, and what the correct response to "You don't get anything for a pair" is.

Then we've got an Ask A GM - even if we have some slight issues getting a question.  This time we're responding to a query from @Darkade on Twitter who wants some guidance on ending sessions.  Do too many cliffhangers create tension fatigue?  Does the energy of the game suffer if session just stop?  Along the way we'll discuss a few general session pacing points like how to manage end times, how to explain to players the fight would take too long tonight, and why £1 Jack and Coke mixers are a bad idea.

But that's not all, oh no!  We've also got a large amount of custard, an unexpected return visitor going all Maleficent on us, a staff member trying to start their own podcast, a breakdown of how Eastenders episodes end, an explanation of how ninjas work, and an advert for those who prefer their lovers to be mean, green killing machines.

10 Dec 2021Episode 24: Conjuring Contemplations & Class Quizzes01:06:01

There has now been a whole year of the Til Dice Do Us Part podcast.  Truly, that's a magical milestone.... and we've got a magical World Building discussion to start things off.  Join us as we discuss things to consider with your game world involving magic-users, psychics, super-powered individuals and the like.  How common are they?  How are they trained?  How are they legally controlled?  Along the way we'll touch on a mixture of topics and reference points including 90s fantasy novels, 90s sci-fi TV shows and 90s Mel Gibson rom-coms.   Obviously.

After that we can get going with yet another Quiz - as soon as we've sorted through this mail that isn't for us.   George has a list what he purports are ten genuine D&D classes, some from the beginning of D&D and some from the much more recent past - and some absolute nonsense, naturally.  Ailsa is going to be challenged to see if she can spot the real from the fake - and you can play along at home too.  Maybe we say some of your favourites?  Maybe you think some of the false classes sound good enough to be real ones?  Maybe you're too busy in your blue house, with a blue little window and a blue corvette....

But wait, there's more!  We've got discussions about who is using the  photocopier, musings on who actually buys Tatler, a very poorly explained reference to TV magician Paul Daniels, Ailsa discussing which 80s cartoon intro makes her cry, George trying to remember that essay about baby eating, and an advert spot bought by.... oh.  Oh no.  If we had known it was him trying to sell that we would never have agreed to it.

24 Dec 2021Episode 25: Festive Fun & Christmas Critters01:03:08

It's Christmas time!  Join the Til Dice Do Us Part team for a party.... er, I mean avery sensible team meeting in this special podcast episode!  First up, we've got some inspiration as George & Ailsa share their experiences at advent-themed adentures when they talk about Christmas In Gaming. They'll tell you about some Christmas-y themed adventures they have played in a few different games, including D&D, and give some suggestions for how you can come up with your own holiday special.

Then pull on your biggest boots as we go trudging through the snow to an Elevator Pitch - albeit it's more pantomime than pathos as we introduce you to Kobolds Ate My Baby!  It's a game designed to be played with Beer & Pretzels, so even slightly tipsy gamers can give this one a go.  We'll tell you how the game works, what its good and bad bits are, plus we'll even talk a little about King Torg. ALL HAIL KING TORG!

Our selection box has a few more tasty treats for you.  There's return visits from some old friends like Nigella Lichson and Acererak the Demilich, a discussion on which Doctor Who villain gives Ailsa the jibblies, an explanation of the game Bogies, a horrifying glimpse into the world of Mr Blobby; and a special message from Shoved Granny Games who have the album you've all been waiting for.  Plus, maybe an extra segment appears in the episode?  Truly it's a Christmas miracle!

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year.  We may be a little late on our next episode but we'll be back in 2022.

21 Jan 2022Episode 26: Evil Bloodsuckers & Edition Wars01:14:52

The new year is well and truly underway now, so it's time for Til Dice Do Us Part to resume new episodes. First up it's  an Elevator Pitch in which we discuss one of the most gothic of games: Vampire the Requiem, the 21st century reboot by White Wolf of their Vampire RPG.  We hope to help you decide whether this is for you by discussing our experiences reading and playing this game, and along the way, we name check almost every Vampire movie we can think of, talk about our angsty teenage years, and try to find yet more D10s for our dice pool..

After that we get an Ask A GM letter in - one in which we have been asked about trying to change game system in the middle of a campaign.  Our letter writer wants to change to a newer version of the same system they are using and the players are very much not up for it.  This is something George and Ailsa have experienced in their own gaming history, so we've got plenty of thoughts on this topic - including why new editions happen, the merits of small vs large edition changes, and a surprising tangent on Disney movies that is at least.... partially relevant?

Along with all this there's the usual mixture of weirdness.  Broken photocopiers, musical numbers, cast tension, Skittles sandwiches, "whiff factors" and comparisons between RPG books and online recipes.  There's even the return of Shoved Granny Games with another Kickstarter they want to advertise to you - one that will take your wargaming to New Horizons.

04 Feb 2022Episode 27: Primetime Television & Prominent Gamers01:25:25

Get yourself some popcorn, sit yourself down on your couch, and turn on the television - it's time for an Elevator Pitch that introduces Primetime Adventures.  This is a game we've mentioned a few times before in the podcast but not gone into any detail about until now.  We'll explain how the system works, how the unusual series planning operates, and hopefully not get lost backstage as Ailsa takes us on a scene-setting journey to start with.

We've also got a Quiz for you, in which we discuss celebrities with a connection to roleplaying games.  Which of these creatives genuinely have worked to write content for TTRPG publications and which are just tittle-tattle?  Ailsa will try and deduce the genuine gossip from the fraudulent fallacies.  There's a few that will surprise you - and at least one you'll be hugely glad didn't unleash her inner goddess on the world.

Of course this episode has plenty of other things going on for you.  There's some discussion about how many dance graduates Starfleet Academy has had, a call-back to a question in a previous quiz, the revelation of which 80s sitcom star George is absolutely determined to meet, and a trip to a bookbinding shop we don't remember existing beforehand .  Finally, there's our usual advertising slot: this time for an app that will help out anyone trying to form a new adventuring party.
