26 Jun 2019 | S 1 Ep 9 - Improving Physician Wellness with Cheryl True, MD | 00:35:06
In this episode, I talk to Dr. True about the important subject of physician wellness and burnout! Most people do not know that burnout is an official diagnosis according to the World Health Organization! Dr. True describes herself as "I am a Midwesterner, who was going to be an artist, a jockey (until I grew!), a veterinarian, a researcher until finally landing in medicine. I worked for about 6 years before Med school. I thought I’d be a pathologist but ended up loving Family Medicine. Did residency in my community, and stayed here for a PCP job. I loved working with patients. Was in an independent clinic, saw patients in hospital & nursing homes. It was okay until the electronic health record came along & changed my relationship with my job. And I had become a pill pusher - rather than knowing how to help the root causes, I only treated symptoms. Very frustrating. Now I worked all day, worked all night, and was miserable. For 5 years I struggled to find a balance where none existed. I started looking at other options. I attended 3 conferences that taught me that Medicine could be different. An Ideal Medicine retreat, PriMed, and my first Lifestyle Medicine conference in 2013. I was hooked, and haven’t looked back. I got additional training, learned amazing things, and met awesome people - my Tribe. My interests are in Lifestyle Medicine & physician Well-being. I want to save the world - and my community is a place to start. I’ve become involved, I’m happy, I am changing lives in different ways than what I thought I’d be doing when I graduated." Dr. Cheryl True is board-certified in family medicine and lifestyle medicine, is a CHIP facilitator, Walk-with-a- Doc organizer, and started Heartland Rooted, PlantPure Pod, a non-profit in Davenport, IA. Graduated 1999 as Valedictorian and went on to practice design for high-end hotels such as Ritz Carlton and Westin in Korea and China. Married in 2001 and have 2 kids, son 16 and daughter 14. By Jan 2018 my health was in bad shape with massive weight gain from self-care neglect over the years, along with High BP, Cholesterol, Blood Sugar and still suffering from PCOS since afar 13. I was given a devastating diagnosis from my doctor. I was on the verge of diabetics and would likely be on dialysis in 10 years. Confessing this to my dear friend, she shook me into action to change my lifestyle and nutrition. I’ve lost a total of 82lbs since April 2018 thanks to the products she introduced me to. My BP, Cholesterol, and Blood Sugars are all normal and I no longer suffer from PCOS! The best part is I’m off all Rx meds! Early this year I closed my private design business after 22 years and became part owner of CrossFit Aviator. I feel amazingly healthy and happy doing what I do and sticking with healthy nutrition because I know better now and my life and longevity with my kids and husband depend on it." On this season-ending episode of Thrive Bites, I sit down with Margaux Alvarez about her personal journey before being a Crossfit Athlete and Competitor and a winemaker. Let's get behind the scenes of her slogan, "Work Hard, Wine Down." With seven CrossFit Games appearances already under her belt as an individual competitor, Margaux Alvarez shifted her focus to the Team Competition in 2019, joining Invictus X and qualifying via the Granite Games. At 34, she has become one of the true ambassadors of the sport and a source of inspiration to countless athletes, both through her own performances and her passionate efforts as a coach, affiliate owner, and mentor. Margaux spent much of her childhood in Montana, where she gained her love for almost any kind of athletic endeavor—from swimming and volleyball to ballet, horseback riding, and Taekwondo. She was turned on to CrossFit while working as a trainer in the Bay Area in 2011 and took to it immediately. Since then, Alvarez spent years on the CFHQ Seminar Staff, and in 2018, made headlines by winning the CrossFit South Regional at age 33. From her current home base in Las Vegas, she’s also found a successful second career as a winemaker. I discovered a love for medicine at age 3 and my passion for pediatrics in medical school. After graduation, my husband and I left our home in Texas and moved to Yakima, where my interest in healthy living has blossomed. Through research, I've seen the overwhelming evidence of the power that nutrition and lifestyle have to both prevent and potentially reverse chronic disease. Wanting the best for my own family, I made the decision to start feeding them a plant-based diet. In the beginning, I had many questions and concerns too, but I’ve learned how to help my own kids make healthy food choices and want to help you do the same. I’m passionate about nutrition, wellness, chronic disease prevention, and personal development. I want to support you and your decision to choose a diet that will nourish your children and keep them healthy for a lifetime." 27 Jul 2020 | S 3 Ep 5 - Using Fitness To Relieve Pain with Dr. Michelle Dang | 00:42:09
In this episode of Thrive Bites, I sit down with Michelle and discuss how fitness came into her life and how she uses that as a tool for chronic pain and also finding balance in our lives! "I was born and raised in Houston, TX, and graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2002 with a BA in Biology and a minor in Music. I earned my MD at the McGovern Medical School (UT Houston) and matched into anesthesiology residency at UTMB in Galveston. After graduating from residency, I moved to San Antonio, TX where I completed my fellowship in interventional pain management at UTHSC-San Antonio. I moved back to Houston in 2012 and began practicing pain management in the Greater Houston area. After practicing pain management for several years, I noticed that my patients were still suffering, and I knew that there must be a way to help my patients lead to higher-quality lives. I consider myself an avid yogi since 2012 and had the opportunity to complete my 200-hour yoga teacher certification in 2014 and restorative yoga certification in 2015. After doing some searching, I stumbled upon integrative medicine and found a way to meld the two worlds of yoga and medicine together. I completed the integrative medicine fellowship with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (founded by Dr. Andrew Weil) in the fall of 2018. I am currently in the process of completing a health coaching program through the National Society of Health Coaches. I am a part of Texas Orthopedic and Sports Medicine with 2 locations in North Houston - Tomball and The Woodlands, where I offer my patients a variety of modalities to manage their pain." @wishwell.health on Instagram (WISH Well Conference 5/16/2020 Women's Integrative Summit on Health and Wellness Houston TX) https://www.michelledangmd.com/wishwell Social Media Links: Website: michelledangmd.com Twitter @michelledangmd IG @michelledangmd Facebook facebook.com/michelledangmd

In this bonus episode of Thrive Bites, I review the book This Is Your Brain On Food. Listen here! Pick up your copy on August 4th, 2020, wherever books are sold. From the publisher, "Did you know that blueberries can help you cope with the aftereffects of trauma? That salami can cause depression, or that boosting Vitamin D intake can help treat anxiety? When it comes to diet, most people's concerns involve weight loss, fitness, cardiac health, and longevity. But what we eat affects more than our bodies; it also affects our brains. And recent studies have shown that diet can have a profound impact on mental health conditions ranging from ADHD to depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, OCD, dementia and beyond. A triple threat in the food space, Dr. Uma Naidoo is a board-certified psychiatrist, nutrition specialist, and professionally trained chef. In This Is Your Brain on Food, she draws on cutting-edge research to explain the many ways in which food contributes to our mental health, and shows how a sound diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues. Packed with fascinating science, actionable nutritional recommendations, and delicious, brain-healthy recipes, This Is Your Brain on Food is the go-to guide to optimizing your mental health with food." 26 Feb 2020 | S 2 Ep 16 - How We Affect Our World with Plant-Based Cyclist Ian Cramer | 00:43:06
In this great episode of Thrive Bites, I speak with the Plant-Based Cyclist on his journey into the plant-based world and his contribution to the community and the negative effects on our planet. Ian Cramer is passionate about spreading the message that diet and lifestyle dramatically affect individual health as well as the health of the planet. He motivates others and is motivated, by the simple yet challenging concept that maintaining good health and peak performance involves making good choices. Likewise, chronic disease may be reversed or prevented when these good choices, that are easily and economically available, become the norm every day. Ian is an allied health care professional with degrees in Kinesiology and athletic training. Beyond his day job, he's a public lecturer and produces an interview-based podcast. Driven by knowledge, evidence and civil discourse, he created The Ian Cramer Podcast. With a mission to interview doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition, Ian's unwavering focus in his podcast is to learn more, disseminate this information to a larger audience, educate lay-people and the medical community and change the world by leading in positive and responsible ways. In June 2015, he and a group of three friends from Ohio rode their bikes across the country in what's known as The Race Across America. Supported by a full crew, Team Oxford Autoimmune completed the 3200-mile journey in 7 days 16 hours and 27 minutes. For Ian, the estimated 6000 miles of training and racing for the event were all done on a plant-based diet. He continues to race and ride recreationally in Rochester, New York. Tune in to learn more about making nutritious food delicious and how you can improve your diet with simple changes. Don’t miss out—listen now and get inspired to take your health to the next level! Missed Part 1? Catch up here before diving into Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyLhf6wmBXU Smokey Tofu Mayo Dressing Recipe Makes about 4 cups Ingredients: 1 block 14 oz extra firm tofu 1 garlic clove 5 stalks green onion, roots trimmed 4 medjool dates, pitted Juice and zest of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon vinegar 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1 1⁄2 teaspoon salt (optional) 3⁄4 cup ice water Additional herb options: dill, basil, cilantro, parsley, tarragon Instructions: 1. Blend all the ingredients together until smooth. If still grainy, add a little more water. 2. Chill before using. Broccoli Salad Ingredients: 2 heads broccoli 2 medium sweet potatoes 1 red onion 2 medium carrots 1 medium apple 1 cup cooked farro Smokey tofu “mayo” dressing (see above) Instructions: 1. Cut broccoli florets into bite-sized pieces. * 2. Dice onion, carrots, and apple into 1⁄4” pieces. 3. Dice sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch pieces. Boil until fork tender, drain well, and roast to get some color in a 425 F oven (15-20 minutes). 4. Toast 1⁄2 cup of farro in a dry pan until fragrant. Add 1 1⁄2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, fluff with a fork, and then cover for another 5-10 minutes. 5. Toss all the ingredients in the creamy dressing and chill before serving. *If you prefer your broccoli not as raw tasting, blanch for 1 minute in hot water then shock in ice. Trim off the more fibrous outer portion of the stem and make sure to chop up and include this portion in your salad. Note: preparing this a day ahead optimizes the nutrient punch of many of these ingredients. The sweet potatoes and farro will develop more resistant starch content and the broccoli will contain more of the amazing health-promoting compound, sulforaphane.
