On Boxing Day 1973 audiences around the world flocked to the must-see cinema event of the year - The Exorcist - clamouring to see if the stories were true; that it was the most shocking film ever made. Even primed with this knowledge they could not be prepared for what they saw that night. People were fainting and vomiting in the aisles (really!) and ambulances lined up outside theatres before showings to save people the time of calling them. When The Dakota was built in New York City in 1880 it was an oddity. Built with no expense spared, it was beautiful and futuristic - capable of powering itself and all it's surrounding streets with it's own basement power station - yet so far away from downtown Manhattan that it was named The Dakota because it might as well have been the midwest. But as soon as construction was complete it became clear that something was 'off' about the building. Strange and unfortunate events befell the first people to live there, and over time, ghosts were seen stalking it's halls. But that has not always been the case - for hundreds of years people have believed that ghosts and spirits can create a substance called ectoplasm. First made famous in pop culture by Ghostbusters in 1984; it appeared on movie screens around the world as green slime, but in reality it can be so much much more. Yet that's exactly what happened, or at least the equivalent, in Florence in Italy in 1954 when a stadium filled with 10,000 spectators saw a UFO pass overhead and drop what witnesses would describe as 'angel hair' on the pitch and stands.
