22 Apr 2020ep 176 - Clutter, Covid & Mindfulness with Kristen Manieri00:49:05
Hi Friends! Today I am joined by Kristen Manieri who is a writer, mindfulness teacher and host of the 60 Mindful Minutes podcast. I invited Kristen onto our show during this crazy time of COVID-19 to talk about how mindfulness can help to reduce stress (something we are all dealing with during quarantine!). During our conversation, we talked about: Kristen’s journey into mindfulness How mindfulness has given her coping strategies to become a more patient mom What to do if you struggle with quieting your mind, or even finding the time to get started Helpful tools to keep inside your “toolbox” How to keep from passing your anxiety onto your kids or spouse The link between outer order and inner calm Resources, including books and apps to guide you along the way (see links below) Kristen shares advice for parents who have younger kids who miss their friends, and are tired of being cooped up at home, but may not have the language or maturity to articulate how they are feeling. Today is a great day to begin your mindfulness practice. Kristen’s recommendation: start with 5 minutes per day and work up from there. Make sure to check out all the links to help you get started, including her free 5-day course! xo - Laurie  A special thanks to our good friends at CURIO-PRESS for sponsoring this episode of This ORGANIZED Life! Hi Friends! On today’s show I am joined by Kath Younger. Kath is the mom of two boys, and the blogger behind the website Kath Eats.  Kath has been in the online space since 2007 and over the years her website has grown from a recipe and nutrition blog, to a complete lifestyle brand, where she talks about motherhood, beauty, budgeting and home organization.
One area in particular that Kath gets really excited about is streamlining Digital Clutter, specifically emails and photos (an area that stresses most people out!)
I invited her onto TOL to share some of her proven strategies with y’all. During our conversation we talk about:

Her STAR BOX method
How not to use your inbox as a digital filing cabinet
Why SEARCH is our best friend

Kath also talks about what she calls “Your digital POWER HOUR”-a dedicated time each week to tackle through all of those unwanted pics on your phone!
This episode is filled with actionable tips and resources, so I encourage you to listen or watch us on YouTube.

24 Sep 2020ep. 198 Dispelling Men Myths with Josh Levs00:53:13
Hi Friends! Today we are wrapping up our series on Men Making a Difference. If you haven’t listened to our other guests, I highly recommend going back and binging the last 3 episodes-they won’t disappoint!
Joining me today is advocate, author and TedX speaker, Josh Levs. Josh is a former CNN and NPR journalist, and the leading global expert on modern fathers in the workplace. He stepped into a global spotlight by taking legal action against Time Warner (CNN’s parent company) for fair parental leave so he could care for his preemie daughter and sick wife.
The company ultimately embraced his call, revolutionizing its policy to make it better for moms and dads.
He is the author of the award-winning book All In: How Our Work-First Culture Fails Dads, Families, and Businesses–And How We Can Fix It Together.
After the release of his book, Levs became the leading voice for modern dads at work, shining a light on their unknown struggles.
I invited Josh on the show today to share his story, dispel some of the myths that give dads a bad rap, and shed some light on how we can work together with our spouses, employers and co-workers.
During our conversation we talk about stereotypes like:
● Moms do more work around the house than Dads
● Moms carry more mental load than Dads
● Dads having more leisure time
● Dads get to do the fun stuff, while Mom’s do more household chores
He offers strategies to improve work-life balance for BOTH women and men, and we discuss the impact that COVID-19 has had on family dynamics.
It’s a meaningful, thought provoking conversation that I hope opens the door for conversations, between couples everywhere.
Make sure to check out the links below for Josh’s Ted Talk, Book and More!

23 Jun 2021ep 237: Digital Organizing with Jaclyn Strauss00:48:36
Hi Friends! Imagine a world where you have all of your information in one central place, safely, and simply…I’m talking passwords, medical records, phone numbers, you name it! And best of all,  you can access it anywhere you are?
Our guest today did more than just imagine it-she created it.
Joining me today is Jaclyn Strauss, founder of My Macro Memoir-a digital memory assistant for all of life’s information.
Jaclyn is a CPA for a fortune 100 company, who is active in her community and involved in all the day to day happenings within her family-especially her 2 adorable kiddos.
Tired of being the “go to” source for information in her family, and wasting time retrieving the same info over and over (think school forms, medical records, etc), Jaclyn knew there had to be a smarter way.
“My Macro Memoir was born out of a need that I personally had as a mom of 2 children, a busy working professional who had stuff here, there and everywhere.”
Through a series of Yes or No prompts, My Macro Memoir acts as a personal memory assistant so you aren’t left wondering “where’s my stuff?”
You can add as much or as little information as possible, and it’s broken down into 7 simple sections.
During our conversation, Jaclyn and I talk about

Prioritizing Important vs Urgent
How we need to slow down before we speed up
Why this is a cross-generational tool

Jaclyn has built an incredible online community of users, free workshops, and coaches to help people get started.
Make sure to check out the links below to learn more or to connect with Jaclyn.

Hi Friends! Joining me today is entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, my longtime friend, Brad Aronson.
Brad’s latest book, HUMAN KIND is on the Wall Street Journal, and USA Today best seller list, and after listening to our conversation you’ll know why!
I invited Brad on our show to share his personal journey of walking through his wife, Mia’s,cancer diagnosis, it’s impact on their family, and how that led him to begin documenting simple acts of kindness.
During our conversation we talked about:

Winning the “zip code lottery” & how he has continued to give back throughout his life
Using your superpowers to help others
How he juggles fatherhood, work, life and fun!
The importance of leaning on others when you need help
How even the smallest gestures can have a large and lasting impact on someone else

In addition to his writing and being a dad to their son Jack, Brad currently teaches entrepreneurship to 18-25 year olds in Camden, N.J., and sits on the nonprofit boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Hopeworks- an incredible organization that helps educate youth, provide skills, counselling support and so much more.

Hi Friends!
Today I am joined by SBO Partner, Lynn O'Meara.  Lynn is the founder of LM Organizing in Wilmette, Illinois. I invited her on the show to talk about what prompted her to start her business (during the pandemic!), and why she has a heart for working with clients who struggle with emotional clutter.

Ok folks, this is the moment you've been waiting for...laundry-loving Josh is in the house! There you will find links to past episodes, tons of free resources and downloadable checklists, plus you can easily connect with our trusted SBO Professional Organizers in a variety of cities across the US and Mexico. Now more than ever we are here to help you in your decluttering journey!
Now for today’s episode, I know that the time between Halloween and New Years can be stressful and overwhelming. Those 60 days seem to happen overnight, leaving you feeling like there is never enough time to get it all done.
Today we are talking about all of it:
The feeling of drinking from firehose
Increased mental load
Maxed out Budgets
The rise in Calendar Clutter on top of Physical Clutter

Forget about your regular list of TO-DO items, and heaven forbid you throw a birthday in the mix to add to your already overflowing plate. (thanks Josh for being born on Dec 17th!)
All of this can easily lead to a spectrum of emotions, spanning from snippiness to a complete mental shut down. So today we are here to give you some actionable steps, spread some grace, and share some words of encouragement during this time. I will walk you through exactly what I do on a daily basis to help prioritize the important from the urgent.
By getting in the practice of doing this everyday, you will begin to:
Make decisions based on intention rather than by default.
Recognize that some tasks take longer than expected while others can be completed quickly.
Set realistic expectations on what you can and cannot accomplish in a day
Learn the natural rhythms of your personal peak productivity time and when you need to recharge
Learn to say “no,” or “not now” based on the facts rather than feelings

I have been Time Blocking for years and last year I started my Top 3 List which has been a game changer. It forces me to prioritize what I need to do versus what I want to do.
As you embark on this fun, yet stressful time of year, I hope you can take a moment to exhale and enjoy the ride. Show yourself grace, give yourself permission to pause, and recognize that Superwoman is a fictional character.
You’ve got this, and I am here to help you every step of the way.
XOXO-
Laurie

29 Sep 2022Ep 303: Partner Spotlight with Courtney Wilson00:55:05
Hi Friends!
Today we are back with another one of our incredibly talented SBO Partners. Joining me today is Courtney Wilson, founder of Simpli Sort in San Diego. Courtney started her career as a graphic designer turned stay-at-home mom to her 3 kids who are now “bigs”.
Like many, when Courtney’s kids started getting older, she began to look for an outlet that afforded her the flexibility to be able to juggle a household, motherhood and a career. Courtney found her passion in professional organizing and officially launched her business in 2019.
Her mission is simple: “helping clients turn stress into calm one project at a time.”
Courtney is in the process of downsizing, and is faced with making the decisions of what to keep, something she is used to doing alongside her clients. During our conversation we talked about:
Asking yourself tough questions, like “what is my life like now?”
“Am I holding onto this because it reminds me of my old life?”
The importance of establishing and maintaining systems in your home

Courtney shares some specific examples from her own life, and drops so many nuggets of wisdom- I can’t wait for you to listen!
We wrapped up the show by asking her what her favorite organizing products she is loving these days and you are never going to guess what they are? (hint! The links are in the show notes 😉)
If you or someone you know is thinking about starting a professional organizing business, we would love to hear from you. Click HERE to learn more about our SBO Partner Program and how we can help you get started.

06 May 2021ep 230: Behind the Scenes: The SBO Partner Program with Courtney Greisman00:46:15
Hi friends! We are kicking off a new series this month called “Behind the Scenes” where each week we are going to peel back the curtain and talk about what goes into the different aspects of Simply B Organized.
Today I am joined by one of my longtime friends and SBO team members Courtney Greisman. Courtney joined the SBO team back in 2013 and has held the title of social media manager to partner promoter (my personal favorite!)
She helps me run our SBO community -which is our network of Professional Organizers from different cities around the world. Our partner program has 2 distinct purposes:

It allows me to offer trusted, SBO endorsed referrals to you or your loved ones-regardless of where you live.
It gives me the opportunity to support other professional organizers grow their businesses. From group and individual mentorship, to brand exposure, and a complete resource library dedicated to helping remove the guesswork on running a business.

Since its inception in 2017, the SBO Partner Program has taken a primary focus within the umbrella of our service offerings. I am equally passionate about helping professional organizers with the business side of the business, as I am about organizing a pantry!
Running different divisions within a company requires a lot of time and attention, and I cannot do it alone. Courtney has been an integral part of the SBO Partner Program from the start, which is why I invited her to share the inside scoop with all of you.
During our conversation we talk about:

The detailed process that goes into how we source potential partners
How the program has grown and evolved over the past few years
What she’s learned from watching and working with each one of our partners

If you are a Professional Organizer (or thinking about becoming one) and looking to learn more about the SBO Partner Program, we’d love to hear from you.

03 Dec 2020ep 208: Enneagram Eights with Abi Robins00:54:49
Hi Friends! Today on TOL I sat down with fellow Enneagram 8, Abi Robins. Abi is a trained Enneagram Teacher & Yoga Therapist in Austin, TX. Abi is the author of the book, The Conscious Enneagram. I invited Abi on the show to talk about all things Enneagram 8-otherwise known as The Challenger.
Of all 9 types, Eights are one of the most misunderstood numbers on the Enneagram. We can be seen as bossy, intimidating, or b*&chy when in reality, a healthy 8 is a leader, crusader for social justice, and champion of the underdog.
During our conversation Abi shares what it’s like to be Queer & Non-Binary as an Enneagram 8, the value of authenticity as eight, and the role of intensity within the eights.
Abi talks about their first introduction to the Enneagram, how quickly it took to identify their type, and how they have incorporated Enneagram wisdom into their teachings.
Although Abi and I are both 8’s on the Enneagram and have many similarities, I found it fascinating to see the differences in our sub-types (Abi is a one-one dominant and I am a social eight).
I loved learning from another Enneagram Eight on how they view the world. If you’ve ever talked to someone who is the same type as you, it’s an immediate reminder that you are not alone or crazy in how you see the world!
Make sure to check out the links below to connect with all things Abi.

17 Sep 2020ep 197 - Living a BeYOUtiful Life with Matt Coulter00:55:14
Hi Friends! You guys know how passionate I am about funding research for pediatric cancer and the work I do with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, right? Well, you are in for a treat with this conversation!
As we continue with our series on Men Making a Difference, I am happy to share today’s guest with you–my new friend Matt Coulter. Matt is the president of the BeYOUtiful Foundation, a (501c3) non profit organization dedicated to helping women of all ages who are dealing with the harsh realities of cancer.
Their mission is simple: To provide hope, love and a path to feeling beYOUtiful for girls and women of all ages.
By connecting salons & stylists to local survivors, and providing online education (on everything from cutting, styling, utilizing wigs & dealing with chemo hair), they are here from diagnosis to remission and beyond.
It was such a treat to sit down with Matt and talk about our shared passion of making a difference in the world of families battling cancer.
Since September is Pediatric Cancer awareness month, and October is Breast Cancer awareness month, I could not think of a more appropriate time to shine a spotlight on the incredible philanthropic work Matt and his team are doing.
On this episode we talk about:
● How he got started in the non-profit space
● The power of using your spheres of influence to inspire others
● Walking with families who are battling the unthinkable
It’s a powerful, inspiring and important conversation that I hope leaves you realizing that there’s more to living an ORGANIZED life than just stuff.
P.S. Check out the links below to learn more about BeYOUtiful Foundation and Matt’s other non-profit 143collective.

13 Jan 2022ep 266: 4 Steps to Goal Setting in 202200:17:13
Hi Friends,
Today’s episode is short, but packs a punch! We’re talking about, you guessed it…GOALS.
I recorded this episode while doing my own planning.
In previous years, I would separate each goal into different categories: personal, professional, relational, and spiritual. Although there may be category cross-over, it’s helpful for me to be able to see where I am focusing in each aspect of my life.
Sounds like a great and organized plan, right?
Well, not entirely.
I would agree that it’s a great place to start, but the problem with my previous goal planning is that it lacks one essential piece, STRATEGY.
Whether your goal is to make more money, lose 10 pounds, read more books, yell at your kids less, or live a more organized life, you need a plan on how to get there.
So this year I revamped my goal planning worksheet to include 4 key parts:
WHAT your goal is (what are you striving to achieve?)
WHY it’s important to you (what is the reason behind your goal? Articulating your why can help you stay on track when you feel unmotivated.)
HOW you plan to get there (what steps are you going to take each day to help you get closer to reaching your goal)
WHEN you expect to reach your goal (is this something you plan to accomplish next week, next month or next year)

Once I started including these details, I felt a sense of clarity and direction that had previously been lacking. To help you with your goal planning, I am including a link for you. Feel free to download as many as you like (I use one sheet per goal).
Grab your free GOAL TRACKER here!

On today’s show I am joined by repeat guest, Logan Palau (my 16 year old), and we are talking all about being environmentally conscious. Logan also shares her favorite web browser that is actually helping to clean the ocean! Listen to the episode to hear what it is! Did you know that April 22nd marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day? Below is a list of 10 things you can do (or not do) to help make a difference in your home and community: 1. Rinse your bottles and jars, cans – clean empty and dry. 2. Pizza box recycle – you have to rip off the grease part of the box (I know a lot of people like to recycle the pizza boxes). 3. Don’t “Wish Cycle” – putting non recycling objects in recycling bins ~ because then we contaminate the bin. 4. Don’t recycle anything smaller than a credit card. Thinks like paper clips and staples can jam the recycling machine. 5. Make sure to dispose of things like electronics, paint cans, excess building supplies, properly. 6. Carry a reusable water bottle. 7. Keep reusable bags in your car so you can have them with you (or keep them by your door). 8. Shop Smarter: take inventory of what you have and don’t buy more than you need refrain from buying “disposable items” (because of boredom, b/c its cheap, or b/c you like it) 9. Consider Eating Plant Based Food: The UN reports that the meat industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. It’s estimated that over 1800 gallons of water are used to produce a single pound of beef. 10. Plant a garden with the kids and let them help to care for it.  Although COVID-19 may have quarantined us, there are virtual events taking place globally throughout the day.  Visit earthday.org to learn more or find a virtual event near you (and don’t forget to use the #earthrise) xo - Laurie Please support us! 03 Jun 2020ep 182 - Streamline your Inbox with Claire Giovino00:50:54
Hi Friends! Today on This ORGANIZED Life I am joined by Claire Giovino, founder of Inbox Done; A company that helps people reclaim control of their inbox. Claire currently manages a growing team of remote inbox managers and upwards of 3000+ emails a day.  I invited Claire to come on the show today to talk about: The psychology behind compulsively checking email and how to break ingrained habits. How email disrupts deep focus and reduces productivity Why email is often the only thing successful professionals don’t outsource, which takes time away from the things that truly matter most (product creation, partnerships, personal growth, family, travel, etc.) Claire also shares actionable advice for individuals and parents who are not only juggling work emails, but also managing personal email. Add in all the emails related to kids and family and you are left feeling as though you are drinking from a firehouse! Our conversation includes tips on how to: Set up filters to weed out unwanted email Create folders to keep your emails organized How to avoid treating your email like a to-do list Whether you work outside or inside the home, email is another mode of communication that can easily become clutter, but it doesn’t have to. Below are some statistics that demonstrate the impact email has on productivity, time, and concentration. Interesting Stats about email: Business owners currently spend 650 hours/year (or 13 hrs/week) on email, mostly on reactive, low-value work (McKinsey Global Institute) Corporate professionals spend 1/3 of their office time on email and 1/2 of the time they work at home inside their inbox (Carleton University) It takes 23 minutes to return to deep focus after an interruption (Harvard Business School) Please check out the links below to connect with Claire, and feel free to share this with anyone who you think could benefit from the information discussed. xo - Laurie   A special thanks to our good friends at BeWELL Psychotherapy  for sponsoring this episode of This ORGANIZED Life! 28 Jul 2022Ep 294: Procrastination and Priorities with Gail Waterman00:49:51
Hi Friends!
Today we are wrapping up our Enneagram & Clutter summer series with my good friend, Gail Waterman. Gail is no stranger to TOL, you may remember her talking about her experience caring for aging parents, and most recently on episode 231, during our “behind the scenes” series. Today Gail graciously agreed to open up about her life as an Enneagram 9, otherwise known as the Peacemaker.
During our conversation, we talked about:
The role of self doubt in nines
The importance of clear deadlines
Why procrastination is a constant struggle

Gail shares how she was first introduced to the Enneagram, how she figured out her type, and the clarity that has come from understanding why she responds to situations the way she does.
In the second half of the show we talked about the relationship between fives and nines and how clutter shows up in her home. I always love chatting with my IRL friends, especially when they are in-studio with me!
I hope you have enjoyed this series as much as I have. If you want to learn more about my framework looking at the Enneagram and Clutter, visit

26 Feb 2020Ep 168 - Hosting a Clothing Swap00:44:58
Hi Friends! I’m always trying to come up with ideas to help make the process of purging and organizing more fun. Because let’s face it, I realize that most people don’t consider purging a pantry on their top list of “fun” activities! I do however, think that doing boring or mundane tasks with a friend makes it more palatable (ever hear the phrase misery loves company?) And if you’re like me, you never have enough time to spend with your girlfriends. So what if there was a way to combine the two? I’ve been listening to people both IRL & “on-the-line” who want to thin out their closet, but are either too tired or frankly, unmotivated to actually do it. So I began thinking about creative ways that didn’t cost any money, add more work to our already overscheduled lives, and may actually get people motivated to clean out their closets. “What if I invited our friends and neighbors over for an open house for a Community Clothing Swap?” Community Giving Back De-Cluttering Food  Girl Times So here’s the rules: Before you come to the party, you must fill up at least 1 trash bag of clothes you no longer wear. This can include shoes and accessories and bring them with you. (*bring hangers!) Check your insecurities at the door. No one is going to judge you for the shirt you bought for some cruise, or the jeans you haven’t fit into in 7 years. Just fill you bag and show up. Leave the kids at home. This is a grown-up event only. Wear comfy clothes (for both the obvious of being comfortable, and to easily try on clothes) Assess what you might want/need before you come. (ie: if you got rid of a fancy black top that you are sick of wearing, perhaps keep your eyes open for a good “steal” at the swap! Side note for the host: The host will provide light refreshments and lots of booze (well at least that’s what I am planning to do!) Set up several rolling racks, I found some inexpensive one’s on amazon, but ask your friends if they have one you can borrow. Designate stations for categories to make it easier for people to shop. o   Tops o   Sweaters o   Outerwear o   Activewear o   Dresses/skirts    4. Depending on how much space you have and how micro you want to get, you can sort by size order, otherwise, just organize the items neatly in piles. 5. Pre-schedule a donation pick-up prior to your event so that you can easily   clear your home of the remaining donations. The Purpose: The purpose of the clothing swap is to get your unwanted stuff out of your house Studies show that it is easier to get rid of things when you know who it’s going Grab some new finds, if you like, but don’t take stuff simply for the sake of taking Your goal is to leave with LESS than what you came with Other things to consider: Include friends of all sizes and shapes—and don’t leave out your pregnant friends who could be looking for larger items. Because some pieces can be easily adapted to fit various figures by adding a belt, have one on hand the day of so that guests can see if cinching a roomy top or dress will make it work for them. Designate one room for changing and have at least two full-length mirrors available so that friends don’t have to fight for face time. If your space is limited, invite guests to wear a bathing suit underneath their clothing to make trying on items in a group setting less awkward. Use a swap as an opportunity to take fashion risks. If you’ve always wanted to wear a high-waisted skirt or a geometric print, but haven’t wanted to make the investment, now is your time to road test the look—for free. If it doesn’t work out, trade it in at the next party. Want to organize your own clothing swap? Keep it simple Set your own rules and guidelines Get creative: kids clothing swap, book swap, housewares swap Create an evite, an event on fb, send an email blast to your friends or a group chat. 30 May 2019EP 129: Unpacking the 5 Clutter Pitfalls-Guilt00:28:36
Hi Friends, Today we are continuing with part 3 of our series on the 5 CLUTTER PITFALLS, and today we are talking about GUILT (something most of us are familiar with!) Guilt plays such a huge role when it comes to Emotional Clutter.  Certain personality types are more prone to feelings of guilt, like Obligers, who tend to be people pleasers, and who gain their motivation from outer accountability. REMORSE, REGRET, & RESPONSIBILITY weigh heavily for people who struggle with Emotional Clutter. 1. WHY do we feel GUILTY? Sentimental Factors:  (i.e. my kid made it) Financial Factors:  (i.e.  it cost a lot of money) Environmental Factors:  (i.e.  I don’t want to waste it) 2. HOW does our guilt manifests as CLUTTER? We often hold onto things we don’t want or use for the wrong reasons  "My Aunt Edna gave this to me for my wedding" "These shoes were so expensive" "I don't want to just throw it away" People want permission to let go.       3.  WHAT can we do to reduce feelings of GUILT? Play through the “what if” scenarios Ask yourself: What would happen if I got rid of this? Why am I keeping it? Would I miss it if it were gone? Give yourself permission to let it go Take Action! Pick 3 things that you are holding onto because of guilt and work through the process of parting with each item. (either donate, give away, recycle) Give yourself a realistic deadline to complete it Get an accountability partner to help you through Document your progress and share with us on IG or in our facebook group, This ORGANIZED Life If you know someone who would enjoy this episode, will you please share it with a friend?! 26 Nov 2020ep 207: Enneagram Sevens with Sarajane Case00:44:44
Hi Friends! Today I am joined by Enneagram 7, Sarajane Case. Sarajane is an author, speaker, podcaster, and now YouTuber based out of Asheville, NC. With an Instagram account (@enneagramandcoffee) of over half a million followers, a podcast that regularly stays at the top of the charts, and a book: The Honest Enneagram, Sarajane is a rising leader in the self-help industry.
I invited Sarajane on This ORGANIZED Life, to talk about life as an Enneagram 7- otherwise known as The Enthusiast.
During our conversation, we talk about:
● How she reframes even the most mundane tasks into something fun (have you ever heard of housecleaning rummy?)
● When she learned about the Enneagram
● Why Sevens like having options
● Which of the 5 clutter pitfalls resonates most with her
Sarajane talks about her book, The Honest Enneagram, and the role of compassion when understanding yourself and others.
Sarajane shares specific strategies that keep her organized and offers some advice for people who love a Seven to better understand them.
I loved this insightful and honest conversation and hope it provides some additional insight and perspective into life through the lens of the Enneagram Seven.
Next week we’ll be back with a very special Enneagram Eight! In the meantime, make sure to check out the links below to connect with Sarajane.

Hi Friends! At the release of this episode, many of you will be on week 2 of quarantine. How is everyone holding up? It’s crazy to think about how COVID-19 has affected the things we take for granted, like the freedom to work, play and socialize without restriction.
But rather than focus on the negative, I invited SBO Partner, Mary Cornetta to chat about how we can all pivot with grace during these unprecedented times.
To look at the brighter side of things, let’s take a moment to highlight some things that we now have permission to do as a result of self-quarantine.
1. PJ days 2. Sleep In 3. Take a Walk 4. Look up Recipes 5. Eat a meal together 6. Binge-watch something on Hulu or Netflix 7. Write a letter to someone
If you are feeling anxious or stressed about being surrounded by clutter, Mary shares how to work with a virtual organizer while under quarantine. Virtual Organizing is proving to be a great alternative for people who crave the personal support, knowledge, and accountability of a professional organizer, by allowing you to work together via zoom, Goggle hangouts, or a good old fashioned phone call!
Most, if not all of our SBO Partners are offering virtual sessions to their clients.  In an effort to continue to support local, I encourage you to visit our partner page to find an organizer near you.
Stay healthy everyone!

16 Jun 2022Ep 288: Summer of Enneagram with Pro Organizer Studio00:49:06
We are back with part 2 of my conversation with the dynamic duo from Pro Organizer Studio-Jen Kilbourne and Melissa Klug. If you haven’t listened/watched last week's episode, I suggest you hit the pause button and go check it out.
Today Melissa & Jen dig deeper into each of their types. Melissa talks about the importance of protecting your time as a Two, and Jen opens up about the value of physical organization for the mental well-being of Threes.
Although both types are in the heart triad (meaning that they are feeling dominant), there are some distinct differences in how they see the world, and how they relate and respond to clutter.

01 Sep 2022Ep 299: Funeral Pre-Planning with Dean Lambert00:58:18
Hi Friends,
Before we get into today’s episode, I want to remind you to visit DeniseAlbright.com for all of your back to school organizing products. Use promo code SIMPLYB to receive 40% off your entire purchase of -valid through Sept 15, 2022
Today we are talking about an area of organizing that most people prefer not to think about-after life wishes.
My guest today is Dean Lambert. Dean has worked with funeral professionals for nearly 30 years to help them connect and serve the families facing one of the most challenging moments of their lives: the loss of a loved one.
As a father who has himself experienced the loss of a child, he knows first hand the grief that clouds the vision needed to honor a life well-lived.
Dean is leading the Love Always Project with a team of experienced subject matter experts and people committed to its purpose: encouraging people to think more positively and proactively about end-of-life issues and funeral prearrangement.
During our conversation we talk about:
HOW and WHEN to start the conversation with loved ones about your wishes
The information you’ll want to include in your planning
The difference between a will and health proxy
How the work at the LOVE ALWAYS PROJECT helps with organization.

This is a heavy topic, but one that is important. There is a freedom that comes from knowing you are honoring your loved ones wishes, and let’s face it, in times of grief, the last thing any of us need is the added stress of trying to do the “right” thing.

05 Apr 2018Ep 069 - Focus on the WHY00:19:08
On today’s episode, Erika and I talk about the emotional strongholds that prevent you from  decluttering & organizing. There is so much emphasis on how to implement change, but without getting to the root of why you feel compelled to hold onto that sweater, or that visa bill from 1999, you’ll continue the cycle of frustration, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed.    Getting to the origin of any problem is what influences lasting change. It’s the difference between treating the symptom verses identifying the source.  We talk about the 5 W’s WHO gave it to me? WHAT purpose is it serving? WHERE am I using/wearing it? WHEN am I going to use/wear it? WHY am I keeping it?   For more information on emotional clutter, check out my book HOT MESS: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized available on amazon, barnes & noble or wherever books are sold.   DID YOU KNOW?  The more reviews & downloads I get, the easier it is for other people to find us-crazy, right!   I am so appreciative of anyone who takes a moment to help the growth of our show by subscribing and leaving a review.    You can always connect with me:  Website  |  Facebook | Twitter  |  Instagram | Email or join our facebook group called This ORGANIZED Life.
06 Oct 2022Ep 304: Living As Neighbors with Shannan Martin00:52:06
Hi Friends,
To kick off October, I had the opportunity to sit down with a very special guest. Joining me today is Shannan Martin, author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places and Falling Free. I have been a long time fan of her work and had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of her new book, Start with Hello, which is due out on Oct 11th (but available for pre-order today!)
Shannan writes and speaks about the simple things we can do to build community. For many people, clutter is a roadblock to welcoming people into their homes, and we are here to help remove the shame and embarrassment you may be feeling by sharing some simple ways to start the conversation.
During our conversation we talked about:
The power of community
Living with intention
Pushing past fear of awkwardness to build something new
Prioritizing what matters

I loved this conversation and hope you discover some nuggets of wisdom from my chat with Shannan!
Make sure to check out the links below for things we talked about in this episode.

02 Jun 2022Ep 286: Summer of Enneagram with Andrew Lang (E1)00:41:05
Today we are kicking off our summer series on Clutter & The Enneagram!  Each week for the next 9 weeks, I chat with different guests who each have a different Enneagram type and talk about the role that clutter plays in their lives.
Does clutter stress them out?  Are they clutter-blind? What strategies have they used to help keep them organized and clutter free?
To start our series, I am joined by Enneagram 1, Andrew Lang. Andrew is an educator in Tacoma, Washington, an Enneagram scholar and student of Richard Rohr’s Living School for Action and Contemplation.  During the episode we talk about Andrew’s journey into the Enneagram, what life is like as an Enneagram 1 and what he calls “the should monster”
Regardless of your Enneagram type, this series gives you a front row seat to how clutter shows up differently in each of our lives. If you are new to our show, make sure to click the subscribe button-new episodes drop each Thursday.

03 Jun 2021ep 234: Single Black Motherhood with Kim Willams00:43:13
Hi Friends! We are kicking off June with my new friend, Kim Williams.  Among her many accomplishments, Kim is an MBA graduate, full-time working mom, podcaster, and community builder. If she sounds like a rock star, it’s because she is.
I was introduced to Kim a few months ago and was inspired by her story.
After searching to find single black moms that were podcasting and not finding any that were current, she decided to fill the gap by creating a podcast and building a community that not only supports each other online but also offline.
Kim is passionate about educating single moms so that they can live the life they desire without feeling alone on the journey of Single Motherhood, which can become so isolating.
Because of the platform, moms all around the world (single and married) have been able to change the way they think, implement strategies to improve their life and the life of their children, and make connections with other moms.
During our conversation we talked about:

Why women are reluctant to ask for help, but so willing to give it
What it’s like raising a spunky 8-year old as a single mother wearing all the hats
Moving to a new state during a pandemic without an in-person support system

Kim talks about resilience, determination, and the power of community. She opens up about the struggles of being a single mother, as well as the most rewarding parts.
I loved our conversation and encourage everyone to check out her podcast, Experiencing Motherhood, Single and Black.
Make sure to check out the links below for everything we talked about on the show.

26 Dec 2019Ep 159: Clutter & The Enneagram with Joey Schewee Part 300:38:36
Hi Friends! Today we are wrapping up part 3 of my conversation with Enneagram teacher, and fellow 8, Joey Schewee. If you haven’t already listened to parts 1 & 2 of our conversation, I encourage you to hit the pause button and go check them out.  In our earlier conversations Joey walked us through the characteristics of each of the 9 numbers in the enneagram, including where each struggles and shines. Today we begin to look at the link between each number and their unique relationship to clutter. I pose the question “do certain numbers on the enneagram have a tendency to struggle more with Physical Clutter, Emotional Clutter or Calendar Clutter?” And if so, why? Unlocking this question could be a huge game changer in how we approach the process of decluttering and living a more organized life. I can’t think of a better guest to help me close out 2019! I look forward to diving deeper into this topic as we embark on a new decade. I hope this series has challenged you to look deeper into your motivations and behavior. If you’re interested in learning more about the enneagram, make sure to check out the links below. 31 Mar 2022Ep 277: Partner Spotlight with Kristy Potgieter00:46:55
Hi Friends!
We’re back today with another Partner Spotlight Episode! We started this series back in January, and I hope you’re loving it as much as I am. Each month I sit down with a different professional organizer to get a “behind the scenes” look at their lives. From growing up, to learning about what they did prior to starting their professional organizing journey, we’re giving you a glimpse into their worlds and learning a few organizing tips along the way!
Joining me today is Kristy Potgieter, founder of KLP Organizing. Kristy has been part of our SBO partner program for over 2 years and one of my favorite people!
About a year ago, during one of our mentor calls, Kristy came to me with an idea she had for developing an online tool to help streamline and simplify the design & layout process for spaces like pantries, drawers, and cabinets.
I thought it was an incredible idea, and something that could be a huge time saver for both homeowners & professional organizers. So Kristy, along with her husband, Riian, did what most of us only talk about doing…saw a gap in the marketplace and created a solution.
I asked Kristy to come on the show today, to talk about her new business baby, Sortifi, the only design tool specifically for professional organizers which officially launched last month.
During our conversation we talk about:
Kristy’s life prior to becoming a professional organizer
What it’s like starting a business with your husband
How being an Enneagram 1 (the perfectionist) can be both a blessing and a challenge in the world of organizing and entrepreneurship.
The goal of Sortifi, including who it’s for, and how it works

She is offering an exclusive promo for our listeners. Make sure to use code SBO15 when you sign up for your free trial to take advantage of this offer.
If you are a professional organizer (or thinking about becoming one) and would like to learn more about our SBO Partner Program, click here to schedule a call so we can learn more about you!

30 Sep 2021ep 251: Organizing for a child with Special Needs with Amanda Cunningham00:56:45
Hi Friends,
Before we get into today’s episode, will you please take a moment to fill out our short listener survey?
Today I am joined by Amanda Cunningham, founder of The Glory Days Co., a company that provides organizational tools for parents and caregivers of special needs children.
Amanda shares her story of giving birth to her beautiful daughter Aurora “Rory” and finding out upon her arrival that she had Down Syndrome.
She walks us through the early months following Rory’s birth and speaks candidly about how she struggled with feelings of overwhelm. From attending weekly doctors and therapy appointments, to wading through the unexpected newness of becoming a stay-at-home mom.
When looking for tools to support her in this new role as a special needs parent, she couldn’t find anything that encompassed everything Rory needed. So Amanda created her own planner filled with checklists, calendar, daily tasks and a robust notes section to document the countless appointments and therapies required to help Rory thrive, and now helps parents everywhere do the same.
During our conversation we talk about:
Her unexpected transition to stay-at-home caregiver from working professional
The role that both physical and calendar organizers play in raising a child with special needs
The importance of routines to help everyone to flourish
October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, I encourage you to check out The Glory Days Co-for free downloads, articles and some amazing products.

10 Jun 2021ep 235: Work Life Integration with Emily Hay00:37:15
Hi Friends! Years ago I intentionally started using the word “integration” in place of “balance” when describing the very delicate juggling act of motherhood, personal time, and my professional life.
Over the years I’ve talked to countless women who are in a transitional period and not sure what to do:
“I just had a baby and don’t want to go back to an office full-time”
“ I’d love to run my own business, but don’t know where to start”
“My kids are in school and I’m looking for something flexible and will challenge me”
These are just a few of the comments I hear from people just like you.  My entire team at SBO (with the exception of Podcast Producer, Don) is made up of moms, and has been from the start.
Today’s guest shares that same philosophy. Joining me today is Emily Hay, founder of Hay There Social Media-a boutique marketing agency where she helps women launch their own social media businesses so they too can live and work flexibly and intentionally with what she’s dubbed “Work+Life Integration Nation”.™”
During our conversation we talked about:

How integration differs from balance
Lessons she’s learned since becoming a mother
Practical advice for anyone who is feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start

As a fellow Work-Life Integrator,  I’d love for anyone struggling with trying to achieve “balance” to listen to this episode.
Sometimes life isn’t about either/or, it can be filled with both/and.
Make sure to check out the links below for everything we talked about during our conversation.

16 May 2019EP 127: Unpacking the 5 Clutter Pitfalls-Procrastination00:33:26
Hi Friends! Today on This ORGANIZED Life we are kicking off a series called UNPACKING THE 5 CLUTTER PITFALLS, starting with #1: PROCRASTINATION. Over the next several weeks we'll be taking a deep dive into the 5 key areas that stand in our way of progress:  Procrastination is defined as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences. WHY do we feel the need to procrastinate in the first place? Boring (other things you’d rather be doing) Overwhelmed (too many other things going on to focus on the task at hand, or it seems like a mountain) Lack of understanding (uncertainty) HOW do we procrastinate? Busy work (social media, TV, focusing on less important tasks) Pretend it doesn’t exist (shut the door and walk away) Pass the buck (wait or hope for someone else to do it first-think laundry, dishes, etc) WHAT can we do to reduce the urge to procrastinate? Prioritize: Make it an appointment Break it up into manageable chunks (20 min) Identify your triggers: Are you trying to do a task when you are tired after a long day at work? Do you have too many distractions (i.e. little kids at home that constantly need you?) Are you trying to fit it in when you have “free time” rather than dedicate time to focus on this area? Do you not know what to do (how to approach it? What products to buy? ) Do you need an accountability partner (someone to talk it through and give you permission to let go) Are you an obliger and need some outer accountability and struggle with keeping that appointment for yourself? Listen to the entire episode below, and let us know your thoughts inside our facebook group, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast , by email, on Instagram at @simplyborganized If you know someone who would enjoy this episode, will you please share it with a friend?! WHAT CAN I DO? → Pick an area that you are struggling and commit to finishing it. → Give yourself a realistic deadline to complete it. → Get an accountability partner (to help you through). → Document your progress (and share with us!). 04 Apr 2019EP 121: Is it Time for a Social Media Detox?00:22:28
On today's episode, Erika and I talk about some strategies for de-cluttering people on social media who no longer spark joy :). Whether it's someone's ongoing political rants, or boastful post about their kids accolades that you perceive as "braggy,"  sometimes you just don't want to see it. Most times it's really not about them, and more about you. Perhaps you are struggling with something in your own life, and scrolling through other people's seemingly perfect IG feed is bringing you down (trust me, I've been there!), that's usually a good indicator that it's time to put yourself in a social media TIME OUT. As hard as it is to imagine, it wasn't too long ago that we led full lives before the invention of the smart phone!  Let's get back to basics (even if for a short while!) Who's with me?  Check out the full episode here: If you know someone who would enjoy this episode, will you please share it with a friend?! 12 Nov 2020Ep 205: Enneagram Fives with Elizabeth Evans00:41:16
Hi FriendsI hope you are enjoying our series on Clutter & The Ennenagram. If you are just joining us, I encourage you to go back and listen to the other guests in this series, including author of the best selling book: The Road Back to You, Ian Morgan Cron.
Today sit down with Enneagram 5, Elizabeth Evans. I don’t have a lot of 5’s in my life, but as an Enneagram 8, I do share a line with them, so I was excited to chat with Elizabeth about life through her lens.
Elizabeth is an entrepreneur and founder of Elizabeth Evans Marketing Studio-where she helps people amplify their story through the world of podcasting (my fav!) Her background is as a business analyst (which seems very much in line with Enneagram 5). I invited Elizabeth on my show to share her story and talk about how organization and clutter fits into her world.
During our conversation we discuss:
● The superpowers of fives
● The difference between strategy and discipline
● Growth opportunities for fives
● How being thinking dominant and doing repressed can impact productivity
● The role of mental clutter in her world
● How her analytical skills contribute to her success in life and business.
Whether you identify as an Enneagram 5 or love someone who is a five, this episode is filled with great information!

Have you ever thought to yourself “What if I need this someday?”What if your initial response to most things were rooted in fear? I’m talking about the worst-case scenario thinkers. You know, the folks who are mentally preparing for the apocalypse.

I invited Michaela onto TOL to share her story of growing up white with an adopted black brother only weeks apart, and being raised as twins in the late 60’s.
We talk about their life together as kids in Scotland, and how her brother’s tragic death in a house fire led her on a quest to find his birth family in Uganda. She shares the impact that first visit to Uganda had on her life; how it led her to write a book, start a charity, and build a school that now serves hundreds of kids and families in Uganda.
She shares about what she calls “The Magic in the Universe,” and how her perspective on life, material possessions, and success has evolved and changed over time.
Our conversation is filled with joy, loss, and inspiration. I invite you to share this episode with your people, and if you feel so inclined, leave us a comment or review.
With Gratitude,

12 May 2020ep 179 - Organizing Digital Photos with Jenna Arvidson00:35:32
Hi Friends! At the time of this recording, we were Pre-COVID, and although our day-to-day lives have changed, the topics discussed on this episode remain relevant.  Today I am joined  by Jenna Arvidson, founder of athomewithkids.com and host of The Simple Home podcast.  Jenna is also a mom &  photographer who thrives on organization and a slower, simpler life (can I get an amen!). She’s taught hundreds of moms through online courses and in person workshops how to take, curate and organize their photos.  I invited Jenna on the show to answer one of the questions that I get asked the most: “How Do I Organize Thousands of Digital Photos?” Technology has made it incredibly simple to take and accumulate photos, but doesn’t  teach how to declutter, and organize them once you have them. During my conversation with Jenna, we talk about: The differences between organizing physical and digital photos How to become proactive with photo editing Why guilt plays an important role when it comes to pictures Jenna and I also talk about her podcast, The Simple Home Podcast, and how she has created a successful business by blending her love of photography and organization.  Jenna removes the overwhelm and uncertainty, and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment. Make sure to check out the links below to connect with Jenna. She has also created a special link for her photo clutter course giving TOL listeners $60 off her regular price! 08 Oct 2020ep 200 – A Lookback on 200 Episodes of TOL00:45:22
Hi Friends! Well, we did it! 200 episodes of This ORGANIZED Life Podcast (cue the confetti!).
Joining me on this momentous occasion is none other than my real life partner-in-crime, Josh Palau. On today’s episode we look back over the past 4 years and talk about how the show has evolved, some of my favorite guests, and what I envision for the future of This ORGANIZED Life and Simply B Organized.
We also talk about how the professional organizing industry has changed since I started in 2009, what I think about the new Netflix show GET ORGANIZED with The HOME EDIT, and the impact that COVID has had on our family and on my business.
And of course, we wrap up the show by Josh asking me, the two signature TOL questions:
Where do I feel the most organized? And where do I feel like the biggest hot mess?
Thanks to my team for their hard work and dedication, and thanks to YOU for helping our show to grow each week.
200 episodes would not be possible without your support. I am humbled and grateful that you choose to spend time with me each week.
Cheers to the next 200 episodes!

14 Apr 2022Ep 279: Life Coaching for Teens with Kim Worrell00:52:04
Hi Friends!  Joining me today is Kim Worrell, founder of KBW Coaching.  Kim is a lifelong athlete and has been a competitive rower for over 15 years.  She has spent almost 2 decades coaching middle and high school student-athletes and is a mom of “bigs” like me!
Kim’s passion is mentoring teen girls, and has taken her experience as an athletic coach, and combined that with her expertise in coaching teen girls on some of life’s complex issues. We hear about adults hiring life coaches and career coaches, but what about our young adults who need some direction and guidance?
Kim shares some data about teen emotional wellness and dispels the myth and stigma that you need to be in crisis to warrant some outside support.
During our conversation we talk about the following:
The difference between a therapist and a life coach.
Signs to look for that might indicate your teen could use this type of support
How to broach the subject with your teen without putting them on the defensive
How working with a coach like Kim relates to the world of organizing.
Why our standards and way of doing things, don’t always have to translate to what works for them.

We talk about setting healthy boundaries with teens for keeping their room clean, to helping them navigate their time. Whether you are a mom to teens, or not quite there yet, this episode is filled with lots of great info!
XOXO-

27 May 2021ep 233: Behind the Scenes: The Clutter Clinic with Courtney Wilson00:34:51
Hi Friends! We are wrapping up our Behind the Scenes series, where each week over the past month we have looked at what goes into different parts of my company. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to the other 3 episodes, make sure to check them out.
Today we are taking a deep dive into my flagship speaker program: The CLUTTER CLINIC.
Joining me today is my good friend, and SBO partner, Courtney Wilson, founder of Simpli Sort in San Diego, California. Courtney is a mom of 3 almost grown kiddos like me, and has an incredible gift of helping her clients navigate through messy spaces step by step.
If you are someone interested in the professional organizing industry, but not sure where to start, this is the episode for you.
During our conversation Courtney shares how she went from wanting to give up on her business in 2018 to having a solid client base through a pandemic!

“I honestly love helping people not only get organized but feel the relief as they take back control of their homes.”
-SBO Partner, Courtney Wilson-Simpli Sort, San Diego

Courtney was also one of our first SBO Partners to grow her speaking business with the help of our Clutter Clinic framework.
The Clutter Clinic was an in-person speaker program that I developed in 2013 as a way to share organizing tips and strategies in a fun and engaging way. It started as a lunch and learn event that turned into a series on different topics:

Clutter Clinic: Kitchens
Clutter Clinic: Garages
Clutter Clinic: Closets
Clutter Clinic: Paper Control
Clutter Clinic: Digital Detox

In 2018, I turned the Clutter Clinic into a teachable model for other Professional Organizers. It helps them expand their business offerings from on-site organizing and virtual organizing, to include paid speaking engagements.
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s the importance of being able to diversify service offerings and share knowledge in more ways than one.
Make sure to check out the links below for everything we spoke about in this episode.

05 Nov 2020Ep 204: Enneagram Fours with Ian Morgan Cron01:03:59
Hi FriendsToday we are continuing with our series on Clutter & The Enneagram through the lens of the Enneagram 4, otherwise known as The Romantic. My guest is bestselling author and Enneagram 4, Ian Morgan Cron whose books include the national bestseller, The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery (my go-to book for anyone looking to learn about the Enneagram). Ian is also a psychotherapist, speaker, and host of the popular podcast, Typology. He recently released a new course called True You: A Deeper Exploration of Your Enneagram Type.
During our conversation Ian shares his personal journey into the world of the Enneagram and its impact on his relationships both personally and professionally.
We talked about the role of Emotional Clutter in the world of a four, and why having accountability partners can play a pivotal role in helping fours stay organized.
We did a deep dive into:
○ Whether certain numbers have predispositions to different types of clutter
○ Why is it important to understand the enneagram as a whole, rather than just knowing your type
○ How being a four has helped him live a more organized life
○ How being a four has made it more challenging to stay organized
Before leaving, I asked Ian to share some words of wisdom for his fellow enneagram fours (or for people who love a four) to better understand them.
I hold a special place in my heart for the fours (many of you know that I parent a four,), and cannot think of a better guest to have on TOL to talk about the complicated, unique and introspective Enneagram fours, than Ian Morgan Cron. After listening, head on over to our facebook group, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast and share your thoughts-I’d love to hear from you.

01 Jul 2021ep 238: Clutter Clinic: Garages00:42:24
Hi Friends! We are kicking off a new series for the month of July based on my CLUTTER CLINIC™ speaker series.  Over the next 5 weeks we are going to talk about some of the most popular trouble areas to keep organized.
Throughout our series we are going to cover everything from closets, to kitchens, to kids spaces, home offices and more!
Today we’re starting with the big guns…GARAGES!  (FYI, several of the strategies we cover also translate for attics and basements, or storage units,  so even if you don’t have a garage, you’ll want to listen in.)
This episode is packed with lots of info which I’ve detailed in the show notes.  So let’s get started!
Garage Stats: 2021

About 9% of Americans rent storage space, even though 65% of those homeowners have a garage.
50% of homeowners rate the garage as the most disorganized place in the house.
When purchasing a home, 80% of buyers factor in the garage when making their decision.

Garage Pitfalls:

Too Much Stuff
Forgotten Area (aka dumping ground)
Multi-Zone Area
High Traffic Area
Lack of (or wrong) Products

10 Garage Tips:

Identify how you want the space to function: cars, tools, sports, seasonal, etc
Assess the space you have to work with (use walls, ceilings, when you can )
If you have a lot of stuff, get a dumpster or a dumpster bag (prepare!)
Get bins for categorizing (ie car supplies, household, gardening)
4 piles (KEEP, DONATE, RECYCLE, RELOCATE)
Zone “LIKE with LIKE”
Use clear bins so you can see inside
Schedule an organizing date on your calendar!
Maintenance (we recommend twice a year)
Getting a buddy or call a professional

Try to remember that your garage is an extension of your home. When we free up space in the garage, it can provide options to eliminate other trouble areas inside the home.  Make sure to download our free garage checklist on our website!
Happy Organizing!
P.S We’ll be back next week talking about CLOSETS!

24 Nov 2021ep 259: Thanksgiving Episode-Life Lessons from Rick Hall00:18:37
Happy Thanksgiving friends!
Today’s Thanksgiving episode has been inspired by and dedicated to the life of my dear friend Rick Hall who unexpectedly passed away suddenly at the age of 54 a few weeks ago.
If you’re a long-time listener of TOL, you may recall hearing Rick on episode 178 where we talked about Spring Cleaning under Quarantine (FYI: he secretly wanted to be my co-host!)
As I was preparing my annual Thanksgiving episode, I found myself reflecting on all of the things for which I am most grateful. As I sat quietly on my back porch with a cup of coffee, I kept coming back to Rick; how he lived and the life lessons he taught me. As you read through this list, you’ll see there is not one mention of material things (although he did love his Converse collection!)
So here goes…
Practice Gratitude-I made this a daily practice in 2018 and it has changed how I look at life. Even in our darkest moments, there is always something to be grateful for. You never know how much time you have left, so live every day with intention

One practical tip:Change your language from "I have to" to " I get to"

Be Present- One-One attention has become a priceless commodity. If you've ever tried to get someone's attention when they are distracted, it's a crappy feeling. On the flip side, when you give someone your undivided attention you are showing them that they matter.

One practical tip:put your phone away when you are with others. If you need to be reachable for loved ones, let them know that in case of emergency to call, rather than text, because you won't be looking at your phone for a while.

Prioritize people over things-especially during the holiday season, surround yourself with people who matter to you-it’s so much more fulfilling and life-giving than stuff.

One practical tip: Don't wait to have someone over until your home is “perfect”, memories are made between humans, not stuff.

Relationships Matter- We are built for community and connection. You never know the impact you’re going to have on someone else's life. Which brings me to the next lesson...
Tell people that you love them-Rick ended every conversation with “love ya sis” and he meant it. He also gave the best hugs. Sometimes our best form of communication is non-verbal.

One practical tip: If you’re not a mushy person, that’s ok-me either. Write someone a letter or send them a text-don’t ever assume that someone knows how much you care about them.

Live Selflessly- This doesn’t have to be epic. A small gesture like bringing someone a meal, or paying for someone's coffee can have a ripple effect on your mood and those who you have impacted.

One practical tip: Don't add to your already full plate. Try incorporating small acts of service in your daily routine and watch what happens.

Be authentic-This is one of my core values. If people don’t love you for who you are, then they are not your people.

One practical tip: Remember that we don’t always have to agree, but we can still love one another.

I hope that by sharing these life lessons with you, I can continue his legacy of kindness and generosity.
Happy Thanksgiving!
XOXO-
Laurie

26 Sep 2019Ep 146: Intentional Living with special guest Vik Harrison01:04:47
Hi Friends! Today I am joined by fellow mom and entrepreneur, Viktoria Harrison.  Vik was 25 when she started building the charity: water brand alongside her husband Scott. Twelve years later, the organization has raised $300 million, helped 8 million people get clean drinking water, while inspiring non-profits and businesses around the world through creative storytelling and design. (You may have heard me talk about charity: water in past episodes about clutter free gift ideas) Now, Vik is helping purpose-driven entrepreneurs find their unique stories and build soulful, authentic and successful brands that deeply reflect who they are, through her  company, The Branded Startup. Vik is also the mom to two adorable kids, and is in the weeds of pre-school, kindergarten and small space living in NYC. Our conversation dives into her experience of birthing one of the most influential and social conscious non-profits, to making the decision to stay at home with her little ones, to now integrating life as a wife, mom, and founder of The Branded Start Up. We chat about her roots of coming to America as a small child and living in a multi-generational home, to now raising a family of her own in an urban environment. (*which for all my suburban/country listeners comes with it’s own set of unique challenges! ) The differences in starting a business as a single woman in her 20’s verses a married mother of 2 in her 30’s. How she handles work/life integration Of course we wrap up our episode with Vik spilling the beans of where she feels like a hot mess, and where she is thriving! I love Vik’s honesty and candor during our conversation, and my hope is that wherever you are in your own journey, that you leave this episode feeling inspired and empowered to be the best you can be. 24 Mar 2022Ep 276: Motherhood Simplified with Krista Lockwood01:03:54
Joining me today is Krista Lockwood, founder of the blog and podcast Motherhood Simplified where she teaches decluttering for moms who don’t want to be a full-blown minimalist. As a mom of 5, she knows how overwhelming life can be. Between “stuff” and schedules, Krista has built a business helping moms find the sweet spot of simplicity by recognizing the distraction that comes from clutter.
During our conversation we talked about:
The adventure of a cross-country move from Alaska to Florida with only one suitcase for her and husband
Re-framing decluttering to “what to keep” vs “what to donate”
How to be more intentional with connecting with our kids from toddler to teens

One thing that Krista kept coming back to was delegation and empowering her kids to have ownership of household responsibilities.
Quick side note: If you head on over to YouTube to watch our conversation, you will likely get a glimpse of some of her littles in the background who are too cute!

29 Jan 2020Ep. 164 - Creating A To Don't List00:38:17
Hi Friends! Today Erika & I take a different approach to getting things done. Instead of sharing our thoughts on how to structure a To-Do list, we are talking today about creating a TO-DON’T LIST. Yep, you heard me correctly!  I was so sick and tired of thinking about all the things that I had to do, I decided to create a list of things that I have control over that I could eliminate from my day. I set some ground rules: 1. It had to focus in one of two categories: RESPONSIBILITIES or RELATIONSHIPS 2. Whatever gets added needs to be SPECIFIC and describe the ACTION, rather than the FEELING. So here’s a snapshot of what I came up with: Responsibilities: 1. I will not look at my phone first thing in the morning or after 9pm / Instead I will establish more healthy habits of quiet time, meditation, reading, etc to start and end my day. 2. I will stop making my kid’s beds, put away laundry, empty dishwasher/ Instead I will empower them to own the process and set expectations of when it must be completed. 3. I will not stop what I am doing just because some asks. Instead I will look at my schedule and see how and when I can help 4. I will not check email after blank time (or I will only check email 3 times per day)/ Instead I will set boundaries around when I check and respond to email. 5. I will not beat myself up for not getting everything on my to-do list completed/Instead I will work on setting more manageable expectations by adding no more than 3 things to accomplish each day. 6. I will set goals for myself both personal and professional to help me to be the best version of myself. Relationships 1. I will limit the amount of time I spend on social media to x amount of time per day. 2. I will unfollow anyone who makes me feel badly or is argumentative. 3. I will not respond yes to every request without taking time to make sure it works with my schedule. 4. I will not go shopping when I am bored, instead I will fill that time proactively by reading a book, going for a walk or meeting up with a friend. 5. I will schedule down time for myself and the family once a week (doesn’t have to be all day, it can be dinner, or Friday night family game, etc. 6. I will not prioritize activities over spending time with my partner. I encourage you to come up with your own TO-DON’T LIST and share it with a friend or accountability partner.  We would love to encourage you, so feel free to take a pic and tag us on IG @simplyborganized or post it in our Facebook group This ORGANIZED Life Podcast. xo - Laurie Please support us! 10 Dec 2020ep 209: Enneagram Nines with Marissa Orr01:02:13
Hi Friends! Today we are wrapping up our series on Clutter & The Enneagram with Enneagram 9, Marissa Orr.  You may remember Marissa from episode 191 where we talked about her book Lean Out, The Truth About Women, Power & The Workplace.
A lot of what Marissa talks about in her book has to do with personality styles, so I invited her back on TOL to talk about the influence on her Enneagram type to her life both in the workplace, and as a mom.
Nines are known as The Peacemakers, and truth be told, some of my favorite people on this planet identify as an Enneagram 9.
Below are a few things that we talked about during our conversation:

The difference between merging and martyring
Why 9s avoid controversy and despise conflict
The importance of alone time for 9s
Why procrastination is real.
The role of decision fatigue

Marissa shares how her “nine behavior” traces back to childhood. As someone who parents a nine, I would have paid a million dollars to have this wisdom when my daughter was small.
I cannot think of a better guest to wrap up this series. If you haven’t listened to the other episodes, I encourage you to head back and check them out.  It’s so fascinating to see how each of the different types relates to clutter.
Make sure to check out the links below for all of the resources we discussed in the episode.

08 Sep 2022Ep 300: Fair Play with Eve Rodsky00:57:26
Hi Friends!
Join me in celebrating our 300th episode 🎊with a very special guest. Joining me today is New York Times bestselling author Eve Rodsky. Her book Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live), walks us through a system for couples seeking balance, efficiency, and peace in their home. Her book was endorsed by Reese Witherspoon's book club and has been turned into a documentary, called Fair Play, (available on Apple TV or Amazon Prime) which I highly encourage you to watch.
During our conversation, we unpack a very real problem that many of us suffer from: TIME POVERTY.
Eve walks us through her personal story about being overworked, under appreciated, and shares the moment she recognized that something had to change.
What started as a simple spreadsheet titled “Invisible Sh*t I do” has resulted in a movement to help rebalance the division of labor inside our homes.
The mental load that many of us carry is what feeds into fatigue, frustration, and ultimately resentment towards our partners, roommates, and even our kids. In the midst of chaos, our health suffers, our relationships suffer and our homes suffer-but trust me, it doesn’t have to be that way.
We talked about how to stop being CIYOO (Complicit In Your Own Oppression)
Setting Boundaries, Systems, and the importance of Communication
Why having an “Ownership Mindset” is far more effective than giving someone a “To-Do List”

Eve’s no-nonsense approach is much like mine, which is probably why we got along so well!
Whether you are partnered or not, have three children or none, or whether your work is paid or unpaid, the message applies to you.
Make sure to check out the links below for everything we talked about in this episode.

16 Dec 2021ep 262: Fridge Organization Tips with Kimberly Hermann00:42:08
As we approach the homestretch of the holiday season, our fridges are often found doing double duty. Not only are they the workhorse of everyday meals and snacks, they are also the temporary storage for holiday meal prep, out of town guest food and lots of leftovers!
According to Johns Hopkins study 31 to 40 percent of the American food supply is wasted, and Americans spend $161.6 billion a year on food that goes to waste.
Joining me today is Kimberly Hermann. Kimberly is my partner promoter, social media and YouTube manager, not to mention mom of 3 girls, and a fellow Enneagram 8.
During our conversation, we each share our tips on keeping the fridge from becoming a food graveyard.
Some of our tips include:
Using glass stacking food storage containers
“Zoning” the fridge in food categories
Doing a weekly sweep of leftovers or expired food

As a mom of young kids, Kimberly shares some practices that she uses in her own home to both empower independence for her kids, and freedom for herself!
I also share some funny real-life stories you won't want to miss.

11 Oct 2018Ep 096: Fall Organizing Tips with special guest, Kristi Santilli00:21:44
On today's show we are joined by fellow Organizer and SBO Partner, Kristi Santilli, founder of Organized by Kristi in Massachusetts.  We chat about how/when to flip out and store seasonal items (a real issue for us in the North East!)  Kristi had so many ideas we ran out of time to share them all! In addition to the one's mentioned in our episode, here's a few more tips for you to try: 1. Have a spot in your home for taking off wet, snowy clothes! Whether it be in your entry way, basement, garage or laundry room, designate a spot for everyone to remove their wet clothes and hang them up to dry         2. Put down a few boot trays or old towels so that they can absorb the drips. This is a must so that you don't have puddles of snow, salt and slush all around your house!         3. Have a supply of hot cocoa on hand for wintery, snowy days! (Ok, so this isn't so much of Kristi's tip, but her 7 year old son's idea!)       Check out our entire conversation below: CONNECT WITH KRISTI FACEBOOK  |  WEBSITE  |  INSTAGRAM ***Our sponsor for today's episode is our good friends at Organized Living!  I've been using their adjustable Freedom Rail closet system in my clients' homes for years. Morgan, Esq.(yes, she has an esq after her name!) With over a decade of legal experience,  Shakisha is currently the Maryland Practice lead for The Griffin Firm, PLLC, an estate planning, probate, and business succession planning firm with offices in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

She is also a wife and mother of an almost 1 year old daughter.
I always say that there is more to living an organized life than bins and baskets.
Estate Planning is a core component of the organization process that often gets overlooked. I invited Shakisha on the show to share some insight on what we need to know when it comes to planning for our future.
During our conversation we talked about

What exactly is estate planning?
Who needs an estate planning attorney?
Some of the most common questions people have about the estate planning process
What happens if you don’t have provisions in place?
At what age should you get a will? Get life insurance? Begin building wealth?
How often we should review and update our estate plans

Shakisha took a topic that can be incredibly overwhelming, and made it digestible and actionable!
I learned so much for our conversation, and hope you do too.
I encourage you to share this episode with your kids, parents or friends. It’s a great way to break the ice on an important topic. Make sure to check out the links below for more information on connecting with Shakisha or how to sign up for a FREE, monthly estate planning webinar.

Hi Friends! Today I am joined by Karen Purze, author of Life In Motion: A Guide for Gathering Life’s Vital Details, a workbook to help people get their affairs in order. She blogs about end-of-life and emergency planning at lifeinmotionguide.com. Whether you want to be better prepared for medical emergencies, learn estate planning basics, give your children the gift of clarity when you pass, or help your aging parents plan for the future — she is the go to expert in this arena! “When my parents both got sick suddenly and simultaneously, I was overwhelmed with the amount of information I needed.” The first thing she learned is that she could have been better prepared, and has since developed a toolkit to help others. I asked Karen to come on our show to share her story of why she left a successful career in tech to start a business focused on helping people tackle some of life’s most difficult areas. We talk about things like: What information is included in the Life In Motion Guide Key information she wished she would have known that would have been helpful during the process What YOU can do proactively to ease stress, frustration, and financial hurdles for your parents, or your kids Some common places where people tend to go wrong, and how to avoid it Helpful advice for people on where to begin I learned a lot from our conversation, and hope you do too!  If there’s someone in your life who can benefit from today’s episode would you please share it? 14 Oct 2020ep 201 - Enneagram 1: Maliquea Starnes00:59:48
Hi friends! Today we are kicking off what I suspect is going to be one of my favorite series to date-Clutter & The Enneagram.
If you have been around me for more than a hot second, you will know that I have a slight obsession with the Enneagram (at least according to my family). If you’re new to the Enneagram, it’s a personality typology with nine distinct types. What makes the Enneagram different from other personality assessments is that your Enneagram type is determined by your core motivation, rather than strictly on behavior.
Basically the WHY we do what we do.
Another difference from other assessments, is that the Enneagram looks at BOTH strengths and blindspots providing opportunities for personal growth in a host of areas.
I’ve spent the past few years studying the many layers of the Enneagram, looking at clutter patterns and connecting the dots between peoples relationship with clutter and their Enneagram type.
This series looks at 9 people each with different enneagram numbers. We talk about what makes their enneagram type unique, how they learned about the enneagram, and their personal relationship with clutter and organization as it relates to the Enneagram.
To kick off this series, I am joined by Enneagram 1 (also known as the Perfectionist), Maliquea Starnes.
During our conversation we talked about:
⦁ The Inner Critic of Ones⦁ The role of Emotional Clutter in her life⦁ Why clutter and organization can be both a struggle and strength for Type Ones
Maliquea shares her words of wisdom for our fellow Enneagram Ones (or people who are married to, or parent Ones) to better understand them.
After listening, I’d love to hear your thoughts in our facebook group, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast. Make sure to tune in next week to hear my conversation with Enneagram 2, Ashton Whitmoyer-Ober.

20 May 2021ep 232: Behind the Scenes: The Podcast with Don Jackson00:04:55
Hi Friends! I hope you’re enjoying our Behind the Scenes series of Simply B Organized.  Today I’m pulling back the curtain of what you’re listening to right here, This ORGANIZED Life Podcast! Joining me today as my co-host is my incredible podcast producer, Don Jackson of the Raven Media Group.
When I decided to launch a podcast in January of 2017, I had no clue of what I was doing! I knew that there was a lot on the technical side with editing and production, so I immediately outsourced that part to an expert. What I didn’t know was all of the work required to make a successful show happen-and get listeners week after week.(It’s probably a good thing that I was clueless, because if I had known how much of my time would be spent working on this show, I more than likely would not have jumped in! )
During our conversation we talked about all of the moving parts including: Research, Scheduling Logistics, Content Creation and Marketing.
We specifically dive into:

How we find and book guests
How we come up with topics
Putting together a content calendar
Our recording schedule (ie: how often and when we record)
The prep that goes into each interview
What  happens during the actual recording
What happens after the recording is done
The process of going from pre to post production
Show notes: What are they? Why do we need them?
Promoting each episode once it gets released
The Value of Ratings & Reviews
How we connect with our listeners and why that is important

I am here to tell you with 100% transparency that I fell in love with podcasting, almost from the start. It’s a lot of work, but I love connecting with incredible folks, while sharing my life and knowledge with you week after week.
I encourage anyone who is interested in the podcasting world to listen to this episode, so feel free to share with a friend!

14 Jan 2021ep 214: Know Yourself, Know Your Money with Rachel Cruze00:52:59
I’d like to welcome our newest sponsor, 1Thrive.com.  Start the New Year off Organized with these stylish & customized command centers. Visit 1Thrive.com to check out the entire collection. Make sure to enter promo code SB10 at checkout to receive 10% off of your entire order!
Hi Friends! Today we are talking all about Money Habits with money expert, Rachel Cruze.
Since 2010, Rachel has served at Ramsey Solutions, where she teaches people to avoid debt, save money, budget and how to win with money at any stage in life. She’s authored three best-selling books, including Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids, which she co-wrote with her father, Dave Ramsey.
I invited Rachel to join me on TOL to talk about her latest book Know Yourself, Know Your Money: Discover WHY You Handle Money the Way You Do and WHAT to Do About It  that just released last week!
During our conversation we talked about

The motivation that led her to write this book
The role that fear plays into how we use, save and spend money
The 4 different types of “money classrooms”
The 7 money tendencies and how to identify them
How & when to talk to your kids about money and finances
Practical and tactical steps to take if you’re are feeling overwhelmed about debt or expenses

****Special bonus! At the top of the episode, I share a candid conversation with my good friend, Gail (who you might remember from episode 165: Preparing for Aging Parents).  We talk about Gail’s wake-up call about finances, I talk about my own relationship with money,  and why I believe in the value of having a financial roadmap like Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps.
I always knew that there were similarities between people’s relation with money and their relationship with clutter, and Rachel’s book really gets you thinking about your WHY, (just like we teach here!)  If you are struggling with clutter, I encourage you to read Rachel’s book to see if you can understand your unconscious motivations for how you view and use money. This could be the first step in living a less cluttered and more organized life.
xoxo - Laurie
