05 Aug 2020Conman Paul Bint - Part 200:52:55

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 5 - EPISODE 5’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE.

Paul Bint is known under many aliases. He would convince his unsuspecting victims that he was a doctor, a lawyer, an aristocrat, or even a millionaire. Through his twenties and thirties, Bint had spent a total of 10 years in and out of prisons or mental health facilities. However, this did little to curb his desire to convince his victims that the fantasy world he inhabited existed (Part 2 of 2).

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 5 - EPISODE 13’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE.

Throughout the late evening of August 15, 2019, PC Andrew Harper and his colleague PC Andrew Shaw were working overtime. The two uniformed officers travelled to the scene in an unmarked BMW fitted with emergency lights and a police siren. They came head to head with the suspects’ vehicle at 11:28 pm in the dim light of an unlit narrow country lane (Part 2 of 2).

04 Dec 2019Season 4 - Episode 2600:56:46

In 1976 a boy was photographed. The picture appeared in The Daily Mirror. The 3-year-old was marching up and down in front of a sentry who stood outside Clarence House in London. Wearing a faux Queens Guard uniform, the boy was excited for the trooping the colour ceremony the next day. A snippet in the article mused about the child and his future. It read: "Dreaming, perhaps of the day when he can measure up to the real thing himself”.

That boy was Mark Acklom. He chose a very different path to the one the newspaper and his parents had envisioned. From teenage swindler to one of England’s most wanted fugitives — Mark Acklom, known as an MI6 conman, led a life of audacious scams.

09 Oct 2019Bonus Episode 600:23:53

You may not be aware of who Ken Dodd is — a surreal stand-up family-friendly Liverpudlian comedian and ventriloquist, Dodd began his career in the 1950s but really had his hay day in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. His is a distinctive looking man — his prominent features, a head of fluffy wild hair and protruding teeth, were often accompanied by a red, white and blue feather duster, a prop that Dodd called his tickle stick.

A mother of two is found bludgeoned to death in a suspected burglary gone wrong. The attack is barbaric. Blood spatter covers the ceiling. But in spite of the carnage, only a small sum of money has been stolen. Is a woman's life really worth the £100 that was reported missing? The attack shocks the quiet suburban neighbourhood as police struggle to find a suspect. Is this really a random attack, or is someone closer to home responsible?... (Part 1 of 2)

03 Feb 2021CASE UPDATE - Death In The Line Of Duty / The Killing Of PC Andrew Harper00:52:51

THIS IS A CASE UPDATE. PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 5 - EPISODES 13 & 14’ FOR MORE DETAILS.

PC Andrew Harper was killed while on duty only four weeks after his wedding. The three people involved in his death were tried at the Old Bailey for murder. Following the trial, towards the end of July 2020, Henry Long, Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole were acquitted though they would each be facing time behind bars as they were either found guilty of or admitted to a charge of manslaughter. Long received 16 years with an extended licence period of 3 years. Bowers and Cole received 13 years detention in a Young Offender Institution. However, Bowers and Cole were now going to fight to have their convictions for manslaughter overturned, and all three believed their sentences were “manifestly excessive” and should be reduced.

This case update follows what happened next...

22 Sep 2021The Mansfield Murders / Patricia & William Wycherley - Part 100:49:56

It was puzzling, to say the least. Following a tip-off, officers from the Nottinghamshire Constabulary were dispatched to an address on Blenheim Close. Located in Forest Town, a former mining village in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the brick-built semi-detached two-storey home sits on the corner of a quiet cul-de-sac close to public walkways and green grassland. On that autumn day in 2013, officers slowly filtered through the backdoor into the garden… (Part 1 of 2).

Raised in Swindon, Sallyann, or Sally as her mother would call her, had a happy childhood. Much like any other youngster at the time, Sallyann would ride her bike around the estate, enjoying walks in the park and family picnics. She was especially close to her mother. 20 Feb 2019Season 3 - Episode 3300:56:45

Anne Fitzpatrick, a market stallholder, lived with her Yorkshire terrier on Church Lane in Moston, Manchester. On the evening of May 30, 1983, at 11:30 pm, the 29-year-old dressed in her pyjamas, secured the front door of her flat and got into bed. She switched off her bedside light and drifted off to sleep.

Anne was abruptly woken in the early hours of the morning by her dog barking loudly. In the darkness, she saw the outline of someone standing in the doorway of her bedroom.

25 Nov 2020Serial Killer / Colin Ireland - Part 200:43:50

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 5 - EPISODE 21’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE.

Throughout Spring 1993 five men were murdered in London at the hands of the same killer. He had met them all in The Coleherne, a bar in Earl's Court. The murderer went back to the victims’ homes and strangled them while they were tied up. The killings were not initially linked by Scotland Yard. However, after the man responsible had called the police explaining that he wanted to be a serial killer, the metropolitan police went public with the information. A single fingerprint and a poorly recorded phone conversation were the only pieces of evidence detectives had until CCTV captured one of the victims making his final journey home in the company of a man that was likely the last person to see him alive. Following an appeal, surprisingly, that man came forward, but confidently denied he was the murderer. He was, however, unaware the police had found his fingerprint at one of the scenes, and the man was subsequently charged with multiple counts of murder. Following a court hearing, he eventually confessed to the string of killings. So why had Colin Ireland made it his New Year's resolution to be a serial killer?… (Part 2 of 2).

23 Aug 2017Season 2 - Episode 400:32:54

Ian Stewart lived on Baldock Road in Royston with his finance, successful author Helen Bailey. The couple shared their home with Ian's two sons, from a previous marriage, and Helen's beloved miniature dachshund called Boris. Ian and Helen had planned their wedding for September 2016, but in April of that year, Helen disappeared. A note left, that looked to be written by Helen, requested that no one contact her as she needed some time alone. Over the next few months, appeals for her whereabouts were made by her family and friends along with most national newspapers, but no one could answer the question, Where is Helen Bailey? (Part 1 of 2).

12 May 2021The Bradford Murders & The Crossbow Cannibal / Stephen Griffiths - Part 100:48:55

The footage captured by a CCTV camera around 2:30 am, early that Saturday morning is grainy. It pictures a corridor on the third floor of a building. A male and a female are walking side by side. They enter one of the flats through the front door. Minutes later, the door flings open, and the woman is seen running as fast as she can... (Part 1 of 3)

28 Jul 2021Diminished Responsibility? / Ruth & Anthony Williams01:00:01

“The prosecution say this was a persistent, very determined, very prolonged attack by the defendant. The prosecution say, quite simply, the defendant was a man who knew at all times what he was doing. His actions were clear and had one aim - prevent at all costs his wife leaving the house and seeking help” — Prosecutor Matthew Roberts, Swansea Crown Court, February 2021

18 Aug 2021Devil’s Disciple Serial Killer / Patrick MacKay - Part 200:48:25

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 6 - EPISODE 9’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE. Patrick Mackay was arrested in March 1975. He was suspected of murdering Isabella Griffiths, Adele Price and Father Anthony Crean. But while he was being held on remand in Brixton prison, Mackay told a fellow inmate he was locked up for murdering 11 people. He repeated this story to anyone that would listen including inquiring officers. Perhaps it was just a boastful claim. However, it was curious considering Mackay was awaiting trial for three murders. Who were these other victims? (Part 2 of 2).

27 Feb 2019Season 3 - Episode 3400:44:05

In a school in Pontypridd, Wales, Christopher May sat peacefully playing a piano — oblivious to the firefighters around him. He continued to play as the flames circled, flames from the fire he had started. The arson was just one in a string of offences, this former butcher, would commit before being arrested for murder.

27 Aug 2019A Confession (Part 2 of 2)01:54:40

PLEASE LISTEN TO A CONFESSION (Part 1 of 2) FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE.

On March 24, 2011, Christopher Halliwell was arrested in connection with the suspected kidnapping of Sian O’Callaghan. Halliwell subsequently admitted to the murder, leading police to not only Sian’s body but the remains of another victim.

After DNA testing police identified the woman to be Swindon native, Rebecca Godden-Edwards. During October 2012, Halliwell was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years for Sian’s murder, but a judge ruled that evidence gathered during the day of Halliwell's arrest was inadmissible. He couldn’t be charged for the killing of Rebecca Godden-Edwards — despite him leading police to her remains. But Why? (Part 2 of 2).

This episode is brought to you in association of with ITV’s new true-crime drama ‘A CONFESSION from Oscar nominated and BAFTA winning writer Jeff Pope. Watch 6 part drama, A CONFESSION, starting Monday, September 2nd at 9 pm on ITV.

Millions of people worldwide hand over money every week to be in with a chance of winning the lottery. The odds aren't stacked in your favour but you pay anyway. Maybe for a minute, your mind drifts to a place where you’ve won. You imagine what you would do with your millions, what you would buy, family and friends you would treat, how much your life would be improved.

Teenage lottery winner Michael Carroll’s fall was almost as fast as his rise after he won ten million pounds. His life spiralled into utter chaos, drugs, violence and murder within his family.

11 Jul 2018Season 3 - Episode 100:38:39

From their east end beginnings, the Kray twins would go on to run one of the most powerful and feared criminal organisations in London. Their influence wouldn’t only be felt by the nightclubs and casinos of the capital but also some of the highest tiers of government. They were untouchable, and the Krays remain a much-remembered part of sixties culture like the celebrity icons that filled their establishments. (Part 1 of 2).

This is the story of Reggie and Ronnie Kray.

In the American embassy, the telephone rang. Special agent Jaclyn Zappacosta picked it up. The call marked the end of a decade of crimes so bizarre, that if they were translated into a book of fiction, it would be deemed too outlandish to publish.

02 Dec 2020Unsolved / Lee Boxell00:49:48

It was a typical room for a teenage boy in the 1980s: football programmes on his desk with his homework, a well-used Amstrad HI-FI system with a tape cassette and radio, used to record the top chart hits on a Sunday, hitting the pause button before the DJ fades back in. Posters of his favourite musical acts covered the walls: Mel and Kim, T'Pau, Madonna, Samantha Fox — standard fare in 1988. His single bed, pushed against the wall of his cosy room, with his black pyjama bottoms tucked neatly under his pillow to wear the next night, but there would not be a next night…

14 Apr 2021Killing For The Sake Of Killing / Colin Ash-Smith00:59:19

From the start, it was clear to detectives that this was a murder inquiry. Officers were immediately dispatched to search the area for a possible suspect, maybe someone in bloody clothes or acting suspiciously. Onlookers had seen a man fleeing the scene. They noted he was wearing a light beige waist-length jacket. But despite a quick response from the Kent constabulary, asking all potential witnesses near the scene if they had seen anything, officers drew a blank…

14 Jul 2021Death At The Rest / Who Murdered Zena Dawson?00:42:55

One of the men reached into his pocket to get out the money to pay. He pawed at a wedge of £10 notes. The cashier noticed a large gold ring on one of his fingers and saw what she thought was blood above his knuckles. Maybe he had been fighting? The cashier then glanced up. There was no break in their polite conversation. The customer had not noticed her looking, or perhaps the shopper did not even know his hand was bloody...

16 Jun 2021Cromwell Street / Fred and Rose West - Part 100:56:23

When asked if they wanted to visit the property on Cromwell Street, the jury were unanimous in their decision. They were transported to the scene by bus. The windows were covered and jurors were told not to talk to anyone. The route they would make on foot, from the rear of the house, into the building, was shielded from view. It was vital the numerous camera crews still filming the property did not record the jury. They walked, single file, from the top of the home, moving down, floor by floor, until they reached the cellar and the horrors that were perpetrated within it. White ribbons marked where each body had been found... (Part 1 of 5)

12 Jun 2019Season 4 - Episode 300:53:59

In the 1980s, cases of consumer terrorism had reached a peak. You may have heard about the Tylenol murders in America. Seven people lost their lives when they consumed tablets from bottles purchased in chemists and supermarkets. They had no way of knowing the pills they swallowed were randomly laced with potassium cyanide. A few years later, the United Kingdom had its own scare when lethal contaminants were hidden in everyday products.

13 Jan 2021Unintended Target / The Kidnapping of George Fraghistas00:40:20

Maida Vale, West London, 6:20 pm, Sunday, March 24, 1996 — George Fraghistas locked his blue Lincoln Continental in a secure car park on Lanark Road. He walked to the exit. He had plans that evening and wanted to prepare. George was just about to open the door of the dimly lit concrete building, when a man suspiciously dressed for a spring day, in an anorak, gloves and a balaclava, took him by surprise and tried to wrestle him to the ground. George shouted, made a scene, put up a fight, but the assailant overpowered him. The element of surprise gave his attacker an advantage. For a brief moment, they were alone, then a car stopped nearby. Three men hurriedly got out...

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 4 - EPISODE 27 & EPISODE 28’ FOR PART ONE AND TWO OF THIS FOUR-PART CASE.

In November 2002 there appeared to be some movement on the case. Following a speech by the queen, it was announced there were plans to remove the double jeopardy law across England and Wales in which a person could not be tried twice for the same offence. The changes announced were retrospective which meant that the murders at Wild Park could be reinvestigated. (Part 3 of 4).

07 Jul 2021Cromwell Street / Fred and Rose West - Part 501:00:11

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 6 - EPISODES 1, 2, 3 & 4’ FOR THE PREVIOUS PARTS OF THIS FIVE-PART CASE. On Tuesday, November 21, 1995, after two days of deliberation, the jury had finally made some progress on the murder charges they were considering. There were 10 in all, but so far, jurors were only able to reach verdicts for 2 of them. The accused, Rose West, stood in the dock. Tears hung heavy in her eyes. It felt like the onlookers in the public gallery were in a state of suspended animation — no movement, no sound, other than the voice from the foreman of the jury... (Part 5 of 5)

11 Nov 2020Emotional Waterboarding & Murder / Laureline Garcia-Bertaux / Kirill Belorusov00:54:46

A text alert bleeped on the mobile phone; another strange and uncharacteristic message from her best friend flashed up on the screen. Over the last couple of days, a number of messages had left the phone and found their way into the inboxes of friends and colleagues, much to their confusion. In just a few texts, she mentioned hot tubs, liposuction, cosmetic surgery, and more concerningly, a mystery man, she was going to meet…

15 Nov 2017Season 2 - Episode 1000:26:34

From a very early age, identical twins, Jennifer and June Gibbons were insular. They created their own secret language and refused to talk to anyone else. Following a conviction for burglary and arson, during their late teens, they were both sent to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital. This selective muteness would leave them trapped in the secure facility, on a cocktail of antipsychotic medication, for 11 years. But when they heard that they were being released, they both reached an agreement that one twin should lead a normal life.

Tragically their decision would have fatal consequences. (Part 1 of 2).

04 Apr 2018Season 2 - Episode 2200:32:56

Between 1975 and 1980 The Yorkshire Ripper used the North of England as a hunting ground. He spread fear not just in Yorkshire, but across the entire country. The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, killed thirteen women and attacked eight others. But before his capture, police were duped by a recording and three letters sent by a hoaxer. The voice on the tape claimed that he was the serial killer. This false evidence would derail the investigation, and divert attention away from the real culprit. Police would later discover the recordings were made by John Humble.

For over a quarter of a century, the answer to the question, who is “Wearside Jack”, would remain unanswered, and John would lead detectives on a wild goose chase that may have cost three women their lives.

04 Oct 2017Season 2 - Episode 700:34:50

Bijan Ebrahimi lived on the ground floor in a four-story block of flats located on Capgrave Crescent in Bristol. Bijan, a shy man and an Iranian immigrant, suffered from health problems that left him disabled. He had a close bond with his family and took joy in tending to his garden in a communal area that overlooked the surrounding flats. Despite being quiet, he didn't go unnoticed. He was verbally abused by some of his neighbours, as he was seen as being “different” and viewed as an easy target by his tormentors. His pleas to the local authorities for help were met with complacency, and Bijan was dismissed as being a pest and annoyance. Bijan recorded some of these incidents, however, this antagonised a gang of nearly two dozen residents who surrounded Bijan’s flat in July 2013.

20 Jan 2021Unsolved / Charles Walton00:51:49

Valentine's Day in 1945 began like any other day for 74-year-old Charles Walton. Despite his advanced years and rheumatic joints, which required Charles to walk with a stick, he had worked as a labourer when local farmers had work available. He left with the tools for the job: a pitchfork and slash hook. It was at the edge of Meon Hill, an isolated spot around a mile from the main road, where they found his body…

27 Oct 2021Anglesey Satanic Panic Kidnapping00:44:33

As soon as the car stopped, something did not seem right. Before their seatbelts were even off, another vehicle, a silver Citroen Picasso, parked up in a hurry alongside the foster carer’s car. There was a female in the driver's seat of the Citroen, and a man emerged hurriedly from the back seat. In a matter of seconds, the stranger was outside the car, something silver and shiny in his hand, a knife…

23 Jan 2019Season 3 - Episode 2900:55:44

Overlooking an estuary, the small village of Bosham, West Sussex sits on the South coast of England. Located a few miles south from the built-up village centre, a sizeable six-bedroom property called ‘Hove To’ on Smugger’s Lane lies off the beaten track affording a view of a natural inlet of Chichester Harbour.

On December 30, 2013, a woman was found dead in one of the downstairs bedrooms.

03 Mar 2021Destroy The Sole Source Of Evidence / The Crimes Of Brian Field00:55:00

Days turned to weeks, weeks to months, months to years, years to decades. Roy's murderer was free to travel around the countryside and towns across the United Kingdom, undetected. Almost 33 years later, the law would catch up with him, but perhaps some of his crimes were left behind…

27 Jan 2021Roseangle Murders / Henry John Gallagher00:40:08

In the years following the murders of Alexander and Dorothy Wood, urban legend surrounding the case spread, with unsubstantiated claims published in the newspaper pages across Britain. Rumours suggested that the killer had posed the bodies, their glassy open eyes staring out through a basement window. It was said, they were positioned to face the direction of the church across the road, where they stayed until they were discovered...

19 Dec 2018Season 3 - Episode 2500:50:04

Stephen suddenly felt a pain in his chest and momentarily blacked out. After hitting what he thought was a brick in the centre of the road it startled him and looking for the brake he accidentally put his foot on the accelerator. Before he could get the vehicle under control it ploughed through a gap in the trees and plummeted into the freezing waters of the Bridgewater canal.

But we say that you can be sure that, whatever may have started willingly, there is no way that Natalie either consented to or was able to consent to what John Broadhurst did to her after that, leading to her untimely, unseemly and tragic death” — Prosecutor David Mason QC, Birmingham Crown Court, November 2018.

03 Jul 2019Season 4 - Episode 600:58:26

Kiln Lane is a narrow road flanked by woodland, crossing the River Itchen, and winding south-east from the village of Otterbourne to the quiet hamlet of Brambridge in the south-east of England. Although isolated, measuring roughly a mile, the road is used a commuter route so a considerable amount of traffic passes through it during peak travel times.

Shortly before 6pm on Friday, January 11, 2008, police were alerted to an address on the thoroughfare, close to the river bank (Part 1 of 2).

15 Jan 2020Season 4 - Episode 3200:43:08

“I think I will get away with most of it”. Those were the words uttered by a deputy churchwarden while he was in the custody police. He was arrested when his second elderly lover in as many years was admitted to hospital. The first had died under somewhat mysterious circumstances. How had this man, in his late twenties - who bore all the hallmarks of a god-fearing churchgoer, worked his way not only into the wills but also the beds of a 69-year-old-man and 83-year-old woman, who were neighbours on the same street? That was a puzzle Thames Valley police were determined to solve (Part 1 of 2)

21 Oct 2020Killer Salesman / The Crimes Of John Cannan01:20:11

On October 7, 1987, in Bristol city centre, a young woman was sat in her car at Canon’s Marsh car park. She had left a party at a nearby public house. Before she started the engine, she noticed a man, who she did not know, slowly walking towards the car. He pried open the door and put a gun into his intended victim’s face. The dark-haired man told the woman that providing she did what he said, she would not get hurt. He motioned that she get into the passenger seat…

29 Jul 2020Conman Paul Bint - Part 100:58:50

"People have this picture of me which is completely inaccurate, and I don't see how I am ever going to get around this problem. I don't think I would describe myself as a conman, or King Con Man or King of the Swindlers, as the newspapers call me. I'm someone who lied about myself and my status. It made me forget what the reality was, and for me, it was a way of escaping. It always has been"

— Paul Bint, Southwark Crown Court, 2009 (Part 1 of 2).

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 6 - EPISODE 32’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE. Following a birthday party in North West London, two sisters did not come home. Their bodies were found several days later by their loved ones. The perpetrator was identified through familial DNA, but the horrors friends and family would have to endure was far from over. Two police officers guarding the scene took photos of the victims' bodies and, while using sexist and degrading language, shared the images in a public Whatsapp group. 16 Feb 2022Southburn Crossbow Attack00:55:42

As she got to the top of the stairs, she noticed a dark mark on the carpet. She had been the last to leave the house earlier that evening and could not understand where the stain had come from. It had not been there before. Glancing towards her daughter's bedroom on the right, she saw the silhouette of a man with a head torch on. He was pointing what Laura thought was a gun directly at her…

PLEASE LISTEN TO ‘SEASON 6 - EPISODE 37’ FOR PART ONE OF THIS TWO-PART CASE. Donald Hume was charged with the murder of Stanley Setty. However, once the evidence had been presented at the trial, jurors could not reach a verdict. Hume would subsequently admit his guilt on a charge of accessory to murder and was sentenced to 12 years, but only after a second jury were instructed to return a verdict of not guilty to the murder charge. The prosecution felt it was not in the “interests of justice” to proceed. Yet, this is not where the story ends, far from it… (Part 2 of 2)
