07 Jun 2023 | Session 310: Catching Up On Queen Charlotte | 00:54:54
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. We first meet Queen Charlotte in Season 1 of Shonda Rhimes’ hit show ‘Bridgerton’ as a commanding and dignified queen consort on a ruthless pursuit to name the social season's diamond. But the prequel spin-off shows a different side to the Queen’s rise to prominence and power. We see a young Charlotte betrothed against her will, her budding relationships with King George and Lady Danbury, and navigating the ins and outs of her newfound queendom. To discuss Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in-depth, this week, I'm joined once again by my partner in pop culture, sex & relationship therapist, Dr. Donna Oriowo. We explore the complexities of mental health, sisterhood, and race relations present in the series, comment on storylines we were surprised and delighted by, and make predictions for the future of the Bridgerton franchise. Resources & Announcements Visit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast. Sisterhood Heals is now available for pre-order!

03 Apr 2024 | Session 353: Art Therapy 101 | 00:38:10
Playing with markers, clay, and stencils is something we may recall fondly from our youth, but today dismiss as childish. Art Therapy, however, is a very legitimate and relaxing form of therapy for all ages that challenges us to think through our emotions by putting pen to paper. To tell us more, today we're joined by Chicago based artist and registered art therapist, Pierra D. Brown. Since graduating with her Master’s from the School of the Art Institute, she’s worked both in communities, schools, and hospitals to provide clinical services to people of all ages. During our conversation, Pierra and I discuss the training needed to become an art therapist, how art therapy can be used as an alternative or in supplement with traditional talk therapy, and what art therapy can teach us about shedding our perfectionist habits. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. 06 Jul 2022 | Session 265: An Oral History of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month | 00:44:36
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives announced that July would be known as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This resolution would honor her work as an advocate for mental health awareness, particularly in the Black community. The goal for the month is to enhance public awareness of mental illness among minorities. In keeping with this sentiment and Mrs. Moore’s legacy, Therapy for Black Girls takes the opportunity to dig deeper into broadening the conversation around mental health and mental illness each year in July. To kick us off for our month-long commemoration and raise awareness, we’ve created an oral history detailing the creation of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In this week’s episode, I'm joined by Dr. Linda Wharton Boyd, the convener of the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Task Force, and Albert R. Wynn, a former U.S. House of Representatives member. Dr. Boyd and Congressman Wynn were instrumental in creating Minority Mental Health Awareness Month after Bebe Moore Campbell’s passing in 2006. Our conversation explores the process of bringing Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to life, the impact Minority Mental Health Awareness Month has had over the years, and Bebe Moore Campbell’s continued legacy.

Earlier this spring, we hosted our first-ever live podcast event at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, Healing in Real Time. My colleagues and friends, Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, joined me on stage to discuss what it looks like to set boundaries around what gets shared on social media, what happens when the IRL spills onto the web, and what to do when social media trends trigger old hurts. And that’s not all – we didn’t forget about the audience questions, they'll be released in a bonus episode later this week. So get ready, grab a snack, find somewhere comfy, and enjoy the show. With its no-bars-held look into the insidious world of investment banking, many of us fell in love with the HBO MAX series INDUSTRY, and more specifically, its non-traditional lead character, Harper Stern. Joining me this week for a deeper dive into Harper's character is Organizational Psychologist, Nchopia Nwokoma, who speaks to how relationships with organizations and communities impact how individuals show up in the workplace. 28 Aug 2024 | Session 374: Black Women In Sports Media | 00:51:11
Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha’Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women’s sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what’s needed to correct some of these biased narratives. Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS’s SC6. And Jemele, making her return to the TBG Podcast, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic where she covers the intersection between sports, race, politics, gender and culture. During our conversation, we discussed the barriers that exist for Black women to enter the sports media space, the importance of cultural competency when covering women’s sports, and why we can’t just “stick to sports” when talking about female athletes. 19 Mar 2024 | TBG U: So You Wanna Be An Influencer? | 00:58:21
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond. I don’t know about ya’ll, but whenever I’m at a party, dinner, or even just going out with my friends, it’s become habitual to post something about it on social media. And though there’s nothing wrong with keeping the girlies updated on my moves, in this day and age, it’s important to know what’s good to share and what could potentially impact your future if the wrong eyes see it. To talk through this with me, I’m joined today by Brooklyn-based Gen-Z lifestyle content creator, Cedoni Francis. Cedoni has worked with a variety of brands such as Vaseline, Disney and Marshalls, and through sharing her journey — from tech girl, to laid-off tech employee turned full-time entrepreneur, and incoming MBA student. Cedoni is creating content specifically for women in her age range, empowering and inspiring them in the process. In our conversation today, Cedoni shares her do’s and don’t’s for posting on social media, setting boundaries around what the public gets to know about vs. what’s kept private, and dealing with haters when posting online.

07 Jul 2021 | Session 215: Black Women & Serial Violence | 00:44:57
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. The true crime genre is one of the fastest growing, but it is incredibly telling who’s stories are told. This has become yet another space where the stories of Black women who are victims are largely ignored, particularly those of darker skinned Black women. This erasure perpetuates the myth that Black women are not targets of serial violence, leaving cases unsolved and communities shattered. To share about the important work she’s done to shed light on Black women victims of serial violence, today we’re joined by Dr. Terrion Williamson. Dr. Williamson and I chatted about how she began to research in this area, why Black women, particularly sex workers, are often targets for serial murder, the inequalities with which Black women victims are covered in the media, and the impact that these crimes have on communities. To help us dig into this topic, today I’m excited that we’re joined by Ehime Ora. Ehime and I chatted about her personal journey to being an Ifa and Orisha priestess, where to start if you’re a beginner in these practices, how technology and social media have made it easier to teach others about these traditions, and how practicing African traditional religions can work in tandem with Christianity, Islam, and other faith practices. The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Watching reality tv shows are one of my favorite pastimes. It’s been really interesting to see how programming in this space has developed over time and to follow the commentary. And what has been most interesting is the way the space has been accommodating, or not so much, to Black women cast members and Black audiences. To help us explore this world, today I’m joined by Dr. Racquel Gates. Dr. Gates and I chatted about the complicated nature of Black women’s representation on reality tv, how audiences often respond to majority Black casts, the stereotypes that are both upheld and dispelled through reality tv, and the changes that often happen between season 1 and 2 of a show. Dr. Carter and I chatted about the ways that gendered racism shows up in sports, how the strong black woman trope impacts athletes, how athletes are using platforms like social media to tell more of their story, and how athletes like Simone Biles & Naomi Osaka are ushering in a change about how athletes take care of themselves. 25 Aug 2021 | Session 222: How Horror Films Help Us Process Life | 00:44:07
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. 27 Nov 2024 | Session 387: Chasing the Bag Without Losing Your Mind | 00:51:29
Social media has the ability to make running a business look glamorous, but the reality of being an entrepreneur is often a lot more complex. This week we're diving into a discussion of entrepreneurship and mental health with returning podcast guest, Melissa Ifill. Melissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker serving clients in New York, Georgia, and Florida. During our conversation, we explored the ways in which our identities and traumas have the potential to show up in our businesses, how ideas of “Black excellence” can leave us stuck in a cycle of burnout, and learning how to ask and receive help from your community.
