Click here for the show notes

Today, we’ll be talking to Midge Raymond who is a writer, educator, and owner of Ashland Creek Press, a publishing house based in the town of Ashland, Oregon.  Midge and her husband founded Ashland Creek Press in 2011 and have been publishing environmental and animal literature ever since. Widely traveled and much inspired by these travels, her publishing company published Writing for Animals. A unique anthology of articles and essays to inspire animal-themed creative writing and Midge and her husband also run classes online and self-paced Writing for Animals classes for those writers who are looking to represent animals in their writing.  Midge will be publishing the third volume of short fiction in their Among Animals series in April, a collection of short stories that affirm the indelible bond between humans and animals.

I absolutely loved speaking with Midge about her work and her travels. We talk about her amazing travels - including volunteering and helping researchers in Antarctica, how she uses travel to get ideas of what to write, and how travel might inspire you to be more creative.

23 May 2022Travel Insurance the Basics | Amanda Hand | Ep 6300:44:49

Send us a text

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Amanda Hand. Amanda (who is a vegan) has worked in the travel insurance industry for over a decade and is a marketeer and I am so excited to have her join us on the World Vegan Travel podcast because not only does she know a lot about travel insurance but she has also spent the past 10 years communicating about travel insurance to non-insurance people so you can be sure that you will actually understand what she is talking about.

Travel insurance is not a sexy topic, but it is important that you know the basics and I really do feel like this conversation is going to help you know the basics like:

1. The different components of travel insurance
2 Why is it important
3. When is credit card insurance enough and when it isn’t
4. What about Covid 19 and war?
5.  What’s the deal with pre-existing conditions?
6. Does when I book my travel insurance matter?
7. How to assess your level of risk
8. How to get travel insurance

I personally think that this is the most important podcast we have ever released. Knowing that you have the right amount of coverage for you and your trip, is the best way to ease the possible worry that if something happens on your trip, you are going to be looked after. Listen to this podcast and listen again. You don’t need to become an insurance expert, you just have to understand the basics so you know which questions to ask yourself about what you need and what to look for in a policy. This information is so empowering.

20 Jun 2022International School Teaching to Travel the World | Nina Radcliffe | Ep 6700:50:12

Send us a text

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Nina Radcliffe originally from the UK she has been living internationally for more than 15 years, and now that’s a long trip! Of course, Nina has been working during that time as a teacher in an international school in Spain, Thailand, and now Japan.

Now, Nina is one of my very dearest friends and we became close when she became vegan when we both lived in Thailand. We worked together (I was a teacher at the same school) and due to the very progressive nature of the community there, there were lots of vegans and a lot of people that went vegan in the 6 years I worked there. This was around the time that Seaspiracy came out and teachers started realizing that meat had a very negative impact on the environment and it prompted a lot of conversations about animals and health too. Nina, a woman who has incredibly busy and has so many passions just added being vegan to the list when she discovered the impact diet can make on the planet, her health, and the animals. What can I say, she’s a special person and I am so grateful to have had her as a good friend during my time in Thailand.

I have wanted to have Nina on the podcast for a really long time because I wanted to have a conversation about international school teaching because I think it is a mystery to some, but basically, we are going to be talking about what international teaching is like and how you can get into it. It really is an incredible way to see the world.

During my time as an international educator, I was lucky enough to work in Vietnam (where I first stumbled on this type of teaching as a career)  Indonesia, and Thailand, and had WVT not come along, I would probably be living in another country by now. Not only did help me develop so much as an educator, the opportunities I had, and the friends I made I will remember for the rest of my life. The intention of this podcast is to share our experiences and observations of working as international school teachers. Perhaps you are a teacher (or know one) and are looking to branch out. Perhaps you are considering a teaching career then listen in.

04 Jul 2022A Story of Vegan Transformation Through Travel | Todd Sinclair | Ep 6900:43:02

Send us a text

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Todd Sinclair from Rebel Vegan Life. Before becoming a vegan author and activist, Todd Sinclair spent years leading travel groups in far-off places, a fitting occupation for someone who is now showing the way to a radical new approach to veganism. Todd’s journey to veganism began on a small Canadian dairy farm, and after winding his way literally around the world, he found its catalyst in a serious illness, contracted when he was thousands of miles from home. But it was during that desperate sickness - and in the loving presence of monks - that he found his healing and ultimately a new truth, by changing to a plant-based diet.  And, although his good health lasted, the rest of the planet soon became sick with something else—Covid 19. The virus soon revealed what Todd had discovered for himself. Which is that the world is not sustainable as it is, and that the vegan way of life is the only viable and realistic choice for the future.  That’s when Rebel Vegan Life was born.  Todd is fiercely committed to sounding the call for a vegan revolution, declaring that a vegan life is the only viable and realistic way forward for the future. His first three books—REBEL VEGAN LIFE:A Radical Take on Veganism for a Brave New World/ REBEL VEGAN LIFE: An essential Plant-Based Nutrition & Survival Guide and lastly but most importantly for you our vegan travel fans: REBEL VEGAN:Ultimate Travel Guide for Plant-Based Adventures in a Brave New World - are proof of that passion.  In addition to being an activist and author, Todd also wears the labels (and apron!) of writer, podcaster, speaker, and self-taught chef. He currently calls London home and spends his leisure time searching for its hidden history.

In today's episode, we'll be talking to the one and only Chef AJ. Chef AJ almost needs no introduction, but in case you don't know Chef AJ, she is a vegan veteran of 45 years who has a remarkable health story.

Until her early fifties, she was quite unhealthy and she discovered that eating healthily it really helped her to lose weight and helped cure her health conditions. These days, Chef AJ is all about helping people who really want to eat like her or eat more healthily and help those with these chronic health conditions through a no oil diet or SOFAS diet, which is no salt oil, flour, alcohol, and sugar.

Now, I will say that we regularly have people who contact us, asking to join one of our tours while avoiding some or all of the above things that I mentioned. But I'm sorry to say. It's really hard to accommodate these requests when traveling in a group and staying in a hotel.

But if you follow a SOFAS diet or a no oil diet, it does not mean that you cannot travel the world. Chef AJ is going to share some tips and tricks on how people with chronic health conditions can travel for business, for fun, or with family. So in this episode, we will be talking about the mindset toward food expectations that we should have, the real reason we travel, as well as those tips and tricks that I just alluded to.

Now, I will say that when Jim suggested this idea to me, I couldn’t quite understand how this might be helpful and interesting to all of you, but when I realized, that actually, when we travel we are all creating content. Of course, that content is usually photos or videos and we then go ahead and share some of that content on Instagram or TikTok. Why not consider collecting audio instead? This is such a fantastic episode we cover everything from why you would create a travel-themed podcast, what tech you need, and a little bit about workflow! Kim has been vegan for more than 10 years and she is always trying to support anyone who is looking to go vegan or make vegan choices and she does that in many different ways (don’t worry we talk about that in the intro of the podcast). Kim is a natural educator, like me, she recently stopped teaching to focus on her vegan business and I want to encourage you to head on over to The Brownble Podcast and check out some of her episodes. I was lucky enough to be interviewed on her podcast recently so if you like you can start there or any of the other 200-plus episodes that she recorded for you.

Brownble’s cooking platform has over 450 videos teaching you how to cook so it is not a surprise that she is talking to us today about something that I know concerns a lot of you, and that is how to navigate travel with nonvegans specifically if you are self-catering in an Airbnb. I know I can sometimes feel a little anxious when traveling with non-vegans and how to navigate sticking to my values but making sure that no one feels judged or that I am crossing the line (even though it can be hard to know where that line is). Kim is going to share her tips and tricks for navigating these situations.

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Lauren Z Ray. Lauren is a documentary and award-winning filmmaker & travel content video creator. She documents her travels on YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok. Lauren teaches people how to write theirs through reels on Instagram.

Her film ‘Welcome to Monterey’ (2020) is about a small town in Indiana and the fight for its life she is currently in production with her new documentary called ‘Winter Fantasy’, about her hometown’s theatre program and how it impacted her life and continues to impact others.

In 2018 Lauren and her partner sold all of our belongings and condo in LA to travel the world full-time and that is what they are still doing! Based in Indiana right now for me to finish my film, but I still, continue to travel. Her specialty is storytelling, and Lauren teaches people how to tell stories through video too!

I loved my conversation with Lauren and I think it is going to be particularly interesting for anyone who has ever considered creating video content or if you have ever toyed with sharing your travels with a wider audience, if you are a marketeer, or lastly if you are a small business owner, these tips will be beneficial. I am certainly determined to try to do a better job with how I serve people through the video content I create.

In today’s episode, we are talking to  Faik Bouhrik The Vegan Stay: The NEW Platform Connecting Vegans and Sanctuaries. Instagram showed me one of the first posts from The Vegan Stay. When I saw the post I knew that this was someone that I wanted to talk to.  I reached out to Faik to ask if he’d like to be on the podcast and he said that he did and he kindly found the time during the launch of the platform to have a chat with me. By the time you listen to this podcast, the platform will be a few weeks old, but I have high hopes for this platform. Personally, I am really excited about it because when I travel, I love to visit or even better, stay in sanctuaries, and as someone who researches and looks for sanctuaries for our trips it is actually quite hard to do this, especially when it is a small sanctuary, is in a different language or perhaps doesn’t have a web presence so this is answering a real need!

12 Dec 2022An Incredible Sanctuary You Can Visit in The Black Forest: The Alternative Bear and Wolf Park | Sabina Reimann | Ep 9100:43:05

Send us a text

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Sabrina Reimann who is a project leader from the Black Forest in Germany’s Alternative Wolf and Bear Park. I first met Sabrina a few years ago, when we took our first-ever group tours of vegans on a  trip to Paris and Alsace.  Seb discovered this place when he was doing the research for this trip. He reached out to some vegans just across the border in Alsace, and they mentioned that this place might be a good place to bring a group.

So, as I say in the podcast, it is a little bit confusing when you drive by this place as to whether this park is a zoo or a sanctuary, and Seb was also a little confused too, but on his scout, as we always do, Seb visited and chatted with staff, and it became quickly evident that this incredible place was doing so much to help bears, wolves, and lynx that have been placed in terrible situations - of course, we talk about this issue in depth in the interview.

I will never forget how excited Seb was to tell me about this incredible place and how excited he was to take groups here, in this remote area of The Black Forest that honestly would be a bit of a trek to come by yourself.

We really hope that you will check out and support the work that Sabrina and her colleagues are doing to help educate the public about the issues facing these animals when in captivity and also to help improve the relationship between bears, lynx, and especially wolves as the numbers of these animals in the wild slowly increase.

Consider also a trip to The Black Forest, whether with us on our Alsace trips or by yourselves. There are some amazing hiking trails, cute German towns and villages, ruined castles, and so on. We have been lucky enough to visit the Black Forest a few times, including when we hiked 7 or so days of The Westweg, a long-distance trail between Pforzheim and Basel a few years ago that is 288 km long in total (you stay in small hotels and little villages between each leg).

If you are stuck for an idea of a place to go, then I can’t imagine a better 10 days or so exploring The Black Forest.

In this episode, we discuss

  • How the Bear and Wolf parks started.
  • Why such sanctuaries are needed in Europe?
  • Where the Bear and Wolf Parks are located
  • The story behind one of the residents of the sanctuary
  • The issues facing bears and wolves in the wild
  • What you can expect when you go
  • What the challenges are for the organization
  • Their short and medium terms goals
  • How you can support the bear and wolf park

Send us a text

If you are a regular listener you are going to realize that this episode is a little different! First of all it is not edited at all and there isn’t even music or show notes for this episode. So why? I really wanted to create a little 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions episode and to release it just before the new year so that hopefully you will be inspired for your travel! I normally record my podcasts in advance especially when traveling, but I wanted to record this close to release because I knew that many of our reflections and favorites would be from my travel right at the end of the year and I wanted to make sure that they would be in the running but the tradeoff is that I cannot edit it as I normally would. At the time of recording this introduction, we have two of our 4 Africa trips. We said goodbye to our Botswana one folks and tomorrow we welcome our Garden Route travelers and after that, we’ll have one more Botswana trip before heading home. I

In this episode, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and her husband David Goudreau are my guests and they will share their 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions.

I do want take this time to thank you, the listeners who have been listening in to this podcast in 2022! I am so grateful to every single one of you who has listened to an episode, subscribed or shared the podcast with people they know. I am so grateful to you! Send us a text

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Sofie and Tony who founded and run an elephant sanctuary, in fact, the first-ever Elephant Sanctuary in Europe. Seb and I met Tony and Sofie way back in 2018 when we went to visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France. We had been in contact with Tony asking if our group might visit the sanctuary for our Dordogne trip in 2020 and if we might visit during a scout.

They kindly agreed to show us around one beautiful spring day and what a lovely day it was. Now, I should add, that at this time, there were no elephants at the sanctuary yet. They spent a couple of hours showing us what they had built so far, their story, and their goal to try to be a place where elephants will live the rest of their lives in a much better situation than they were before.

As usual, Seb and I were in absolute awe of the work these people are doing. Of course that Dordogne trip in 2020 did not go ahead, but we have actually rebooted that trip and you could be visiting this sanctuary, a sanctuary that is not open to the public on our trip on our A Taste Of The French Countryside: Romantic Villages & Valleys with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau that is happening in September 2023! This trip still has a few spots available and you can join us and visit  The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France and meet Gandhi and Delhi!

In this episode, we discuss

  • How Sofie and Tony got involved in animal protection
  • Why there is a need for an elephant sanctuary in Europe
  • Why they decided to create this space for elephants
  • What their long-term goals are for this sanctuary

06 Feb 2023Tales From a Former Flight Attendant | Tammy Robertson | Ep 9900:53:09

Send us a text

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Tammy Robertson. Tammy Robertson is a registered nurse who serves as a Food For Life Instructor for the greater Sarasota area in Florida. Her company is called Planted Into Wellness and she uses her medical experience to help guide people to improve their health through coaching. Tammy (alongside her husband Dave) was also a traveler on our inaugural Northern Italy trip in 2022 and she was great fun to travel with through the Italian lakes, dolomites, alps, and the Italian cities of Verona and Venice!

Probably the reason she is so much fun to travel with is the fact that Tammy is a former flight attendant, a job which I think you will agree is only suited to some people especially those with a sense of humor and Tammy has that in spades.

Today’s episode is a little bit different as Tammy will share with us her experience of working for an airline as a flight attendant Consider it more of a storytime episode.

In this episode we discuss the following:

  • How Tammy came to work as a flight attendant?
  • What the recruitment process was like?
  • What the schedule was like for Flight attendants?
  • Perks that flight attendants get when traveling

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Ingrid  Geertsema. Ingrid was Born in the Netherlands and she lived in the Hague until 2000. Her desire to travel was always strong and after high school, she struck a balance between exploring Europe and working in the Netherlands to pay for her travels.
In 1996 she decided to go back to school and studied Communication Management at the University of the Hague, where she also joined an exchange program with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (USA). Two months after earning her degree in 2000 the travel bug hit home once more, and Ingrid traveled to South Africa on holiday. This time, there was no returning home.
Ingrid worked as a tour guide for Baobab Reizen, a Dutch overland company, for three years. During this time, Ingrid traveled extensively throughout southern Africa. At the end of 2003, Ingrid finally settled down in the town of Hoedspruit, Limpopo, where she joined Transfrontiers Wildlife Walking Safaris. In 2009, Backroads Africa was born as an in-house travel agency, assisting people who had booked a walking safari with the rest of their itinerary.
Having worked in the safari and lodge industry for more than 20 years now, Ingrid understands the varying needs of independent travelers that come to Africa on holiday, to work, study, or sometimes fulfill a dream. Ingrid combines her love and passion for travel and Africa with a personalized approach and a 100% commitment to not just meet but exceed the expectations of her clients.
Ingrid is also a certified Life Coach and NLP Practitioner, a Vegan Nutrition Health Coach, and a Health Transformation Coach

As a Vegan Travel Specialist Ingrid assists local and international vegans with safe, ethical, affordable, and adventurous itineraries that include vegan guesthouses, lodges, and sanctuaries.

So in this episode, we talk about:
How Ingrid’s love affair with Africa started

10 Jul 2023REBROADCAST: Learning Languages for Travel | Wendy Werneth | Ep 12100:57:02

Send us a text

We are excited to announce that we will be rebroadcasting an episode from our archives featuring Wendy Werneth, an extraordinary polyglot and former vegan travel blogger. During our Italy group tours, we encountered an unexpected shortage of interviews for our podcast while away. However, we found that this particular episode stood out as a good one to rebroadcast.

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Italy and France, where I was able to put into practice the languages I've been learning. It was a truly enjoyable experience to communicate, even if only to a small extent, in the local languages of these places.

Speaking a bit of the local language while traveling adds an extra layer of pleasure to the journey. It enables a deeper connection with the local culture and people, fostering more meaningful interactions. By making an effort to use the language, regardless of its proficiency, you demonstrate respect and appreciation for the local customs and traditions. It opens doors to new encounters, interesting conversations, and a richer understanding of the places you visit.

When you can communicate in the local language, it enhances your overall travel experience. You can navigate more easily, seek recommendations from locals, and uncover hidden gems that may be unknown to tourists. It instills a sense of independence and empowerment, knowing that you can handle day-to-day situations and interact with locals without relying solely on English or other languages.

Personally, my recent travels have left me highly motivated to improve my French and Italian language skills. Even the ability to communicate at a basic level reminded me of the joy and fulfillment that comes from connecting with others in their native language. This has inspired me to deepen my understanding of these languages so that I can engage more fluently and confidently with people I meet during future travels. I will have the opportunity to visit France in just a couple of months during our French Countryside trip, and I'll be returning to Italy next June.

Language learning is an ongoing journey, and my experiences in Italy and France have reignited my passion for achieving proficiency in French and Italian. I aim to expand my ability to express myself, comprehend the nuances of these languages, and immerse myself further in the cultures of these beautiful countries. My motivation to improve stems from a genuine love for languages and a desire to create more meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds.

While this episode may be a throwback for some, we firmly believe that it offers valuable insights and practical tips that remain relevant today. Whether you are revisiting it or listening for the first time, we are confident that you will find a wealth of inspiration and knowledge. Simply visit our website and enter "Wendy" in the search bar to find the original show notes for this episode, along with all the resources - there are a lot.

Join us as we rekindle the magic of this episode and delve into the world of learning languages for travel with Wendy Werneth, the Nomadic Vegan and polyglot. We will be back next week with original content for you.

04 Dec 2023ANNOUNCEMENT: Temporary Pause on Weekly Podcast: Navigating Construction Chaos!00:04:50

Send us a text

Hello, everyone! This is Brighde, your host from The World Vegan Travel Podcast, and I've got some news to share.

Over the last 18 months, I've been bringing you weekly episodes, exploring the world of vegan travel together. In my recent episodes, I shared the amazing experiences from our group tour to Thailand and you will have noticed that they were not interview podcasts. That’s because I've encountered a challenge. Upon returning home, I found myself surrounded by the not-so-soothing sounds of construction near my house—a bridge being built, complete with noisy piling work. Unfortunately, this isn't an ideal environment for recording our usual interview-style podcasts.

I reached out to the construction company, and they informed me that this symphony of construction sounds will continue until the end of January 24. Despite having several interviews lined up before our Alsace trip in the first week of December, I've had to reschedule them until after the construction concludes. Additionally, Seb and I are gearing up for travel from February to April, heading to Australia to see family and Japan running our trip. Typically, I'd have a bank of podcasts ready for you during my absence, but this time, due to the construction noise as soon as I got back, I have none.

Balancing interviews across different time zones is challenging and I usually keep all day Friday open for podcast recording so as to accommodate those different time zones, and I've spent the last two weeks since returning from Thailand trying to figure out a cost-effective solution. I researched a coworking space but I would need my own office which was not cost effective at all and it’s hard with equipment lugging that there, booking spots and then having to reschedule or cancel last minute should my guest not be able to attend for some reason.

Seb and I brainstormed ideas like creating compilation episodes or rebroadcasting some classics. While these could work for a couple of weeks, these ideas are not sustainable for several months.

So, unfortunately, I haven't found a way to continue with weekly podcasts for now.

I'm genuinely disappointed because I know consistency is key in podcasting, and I've enjoyed the momentum we've built together.

So, what am I going to do?

I plan to relaunch the podcast for weekly episodes around April or May 2024, once the construction chaos has settled, and I've accumulated a stash of interviews ready to go. In the meantime, I might drop a few one-off episodes sharing some exciting travel experiences Seb and I have either personal travel, or with our groups or research for our tours—think Prague, Alsace in December, Japan, and Queensland, Australia.

Remember to set a reminder to check for new weekly episodes in May, make sure you're notified when a new episode is launched on your podcast catcher and make sure you're on our mailing list for updates on the podcast's return. Your support means the world to me, and I can't wait to be back in your earbuds, sharing more vegan travel goodness sometime in the second quarter of 2024.

Until then, safe and happy travels, my wonderful listeners! Thanks for understanding, and I'll catch you on the flip side.
