30 Aug 2023100: What I Learned About Commitment After Recording 100 Episodes00:21:05

It’s the 100th episode of The World Class Leaders show! Join Andrea in this big achievement as he shares the 5 key things he has learned over the past two years of creating the podcast.

If you like the show, please subscribe and leave a review, it makes all the difference!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Keep your eye on the prize, think about the bigger picture and why you are doing what you’re doing
  2. Commitment is proof of integrity. Think about what stops you from being committed.
  3. Everything is about give and take. Andrea gives his knowledge and that of his guests for free and if people then see value they will get in touch.
  4. Good is good enough. If you chase perfection too much it will lead to procrastination and prevent you from doing things.
  5. Think about your support system. Who are the right group of people who can really make a difference to help you achieve your goals?

BEST BITS

“Sometimes we feel that we’re working but that we aren’t any more connected to the big purpose”

“When you record a podcast there are days you don’t want to do it”

“I don’t push anything here, I prefer giving”

“I’m not looking for something perfect I’m looking for something good, to shaking and shifting mindsets”

"Givers always win"

07 Mar 2024126: Why Senior Executives Struggle to Simplify their Business00:11:58

Something Andrea consistently notices when working with CEOs and their teams is the notion of complexity. That is, how and why our understanding and definition of complexity differ and why so many CEOs and professionals overcomplicate their business. In this episode, Andrea explores the many reasons behind creating complexity and talks about how to recognise and see the simple and often much easier solution right in front of you.

Leaders Show BRAND NEW YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Some individuals can appear ‘addicted’ to complexity. There are often simple solutions in front of them but they can’t see them.
  • CEOs and owners can have the tendency to overcomplicate their business.
  • One reason someone may overcomplicate is due to fear of failure.
  • Risks are much more transparent in the modern world, everything is seen and tracked, and every decision matters, which can prevent CEOs and leaders from taking risks.
  • Often the reaction to fear is to assert control, which means making decisions for tasks and areas where they aren’t the expert.
  • Success isn’t about measuring everything, but measuring what matters.
  • Complexity is the enemy of growth. Stop overcomplicating things and instead work to find simple solutions to drive growth.

BEST MOMENTS

"When we all talk about complexity we all have different meanings as well as definition and the implication of that into the business”

“Some executives are scared to take risks”

“They’re more afraid, so they try and control every area of the business as a consequence of that”

“It’s really fear bringing more complexity”

“Go simple, simplicity is the way to drive growth”

Lorenzo stressed the need to pivot quickly, fail fast, and learn in order to adapt to constant change. He shared insights on building diverse teams, focusing on culture, effective communication, and empowering others. Lorenzo also advised aspiring leaders on self-awareness, taking feedback, and managing ambiguity.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Energy is going through an exciting transition period that requires collaboration between stakeholders.
  • Having a clear and easy-to-communicate strategy is key, but changing behaviours and culture is harder.
  • Leaders must role model desired behaviours and make bold decisions to mobilise change.
  • Pivoting quickly and failing fast is critical to adapting to constant change.
  • Quiet, focused time is important for leaders to think strategically.
  • Surround yourself with a diverse team willing to challenge you.

BEST MOMENTS "It's a great time to be in energy. There is a fundamental tectonic shift and transformation occurring."

"If you're going to be a good leader today, change is constant and actually looking at ambiguity as a strength."

"The role of being a leader is more challenging today because of all the externalities that are happening."

"No matter how confident you are...you will need a team that is with you, supporting you and aligned with you."

05 Oct 2023105: Firing: The Inevitable Test of Leadership00:10:08

Having to fire people is one of the most difficult things a leader has to do but it's inevitable. In this episode, Andrea shares some better techniques to use when you need to terminate someone's employment, whilst having the minimal impact on their well-being and life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Every leader has the responsibility to fire people, even if they care about them.
  • The consequence of firing is the same but how you do it is what shows your true leadership style and whether you care about people.
  • Prepare people for bad news. Make sure your team are aware of financial difficulties that might impact them.
  • Show empathy and show compassion when you are firing someone.
  • Be proactively supportive of those you fire, with references, recommendations and introductions.

BEST MOMENTS "Any organisation, any leader needs to face the current reality of getting rid of people”

“If you care about people firing really kills you as a leader”

“Firing is 100% predictable”

“People can expect the worst so they can prepare a plan b earlier”

“People are not a by-product of results, people are people”

18 Apr 2024132. 5 things I know now about team performance that I wish I had known 15 years ago00:10:49

How can leaders create a strong and high-performing team? Andrea reflects on his decades of experience as a leader as well as the things he has learned from others in this episode. He outlines the 5 key lessons he has learnt to help build a team that is innovative, solution-focused and supported.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Every session and communication you have with a team is an opportunity to learn from them.
  • Don’t underestimate your team’s creativity and solutions just because they have performed poorly in the past.
  • Diversity is essential in teams, particularly around skillset and experience.
  • We can unconsciously create a culture where a team ‘plays it safe’ instead of taking risks and being dynamic.
  • Better performance comes from teams recognising and being given permission to continue learning.
  • If your team feels supported and valued then they will perform at their best.

BEST MOMENTS

"When your past team performance isn’t great you tend to underestimate the people’s abilities to come up with new and creative solutions”

“When teams are given the freedom to experiment and fail they are really more likely to become out with new and innovative solutions”

“Every single action, every single behaviour, every single mindset is created around learning”

28 Sep 2023104: Why 70% of CEOs Feel Like Frauds, Even When They’re Not00:08:03

It may come as a surprise to learn that many CEOs suffer from imposter syndrome. In this episode, Andrea talks about this topic and the 4 main factors that contribute to the feelings of imposter syndrome and reveals a game-changing solution if you are feeling this way.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • CEOs have a large amount of responsibility but often no one to confide in or seek support from.
  • Excessive standards for yourself, particularly around being professional can be detrimental to self-esteem and provoke feelings of inadequacy.
  • CEOs and leaders can overly rely on external validation as they are held accountable for so much and spend a lot of time receiving feedback.
  • Comparison and self-doubt can build up to create imposter syndrome.

BEST MOMENTS "They might feel as if they don’t deserve their success”

“The future self is the result of your thoughts”

“You are better than the circumstances, you are better than what you see right now”

25 Apr 2024133: Why are so many CFOs becoming CEOs?00:10:07

There is a growing trend in the business world where CEOs have previously held the position of CFO. In this episode, Andrea discusses this trend, the research behind it, and the reasons why it may be happening. Additionally, Andrea talks about the influence of the current economic climate on the decisions of board members and the influence this may have.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • 30% of Fortune 100 CEOs have previously served as CFOs, this trend is replicated across the corporate world.
  • CFOs keep the company in a safe financial position, this is recognised highly by CEOs and the board.
  • In challenging economic times, whoever is looking after ‘the numbers’ generates a lot of trust and attention.
  • If a decision for a new CEO has to be made quickly, the COO and CFO are candidates that are frequently looked at first.
  • CFOs have strong existing relationships with board members than many other senior roles.
  • The risk-averse nature of CFOs can lend itself to periods of uncertainty like we are seeing in the economy and therefore many businesses at the moment.
  • The mindset of a CFO generally lends itself to keeping the status quo, they can find it more challenging to shift to a growth mindset that may be needed for a more ambitious future for companies.

BEST MOMENTS

“This trend is clearly on the rise”

“They provide a sense of stability and control to the board”

“They have a stronger relationship, that CFOs have with the board”

“They feel more confident, in a safer place, especially when restructuring to hand over to a CFO”

“CFOs are inherently risk-averse”

"If you really want to drive top-line revenue, choosing a CFO could be a really risky decision"

20 Oct 2022056: Hans-Martin Hellebrand CEO of Badenova on Turning Leadership Upside Down00:48:09

In the ‘old’ Western European world, internal business leaders were typically viewed as the top of the organizational hierarchy pyramid — the ones who ‘knew it all’ and made the decisions accordingly.

Today’s business wisdom turns the prevailing structure upside down, with customers sitting at the top of the pyramid; for true organizational success, this is where all business decisions should stem from.

For episode # 56 of my podcast the World Class Leaders Show, I was honored to host a good friend from Germany, Hans-Martin Hellebrand. Hans-Martin is the co-CEO of Badenova, a regional utility company committed to driving energy transition in Southwest Germany. Before joining Badenova, Hans-Martin was managing director of the digital energy retailer eprimo. From 2015 – 2017, he founded and led an innovation center in Silicon Valley, as well as scaling a tech start-up as COO/CFO.

Hans-Martin has studied at internal institutions such as Stanford and Kellogg-Northwestern, and he was awarded “IT Executive 2016” by CIO Magazine. By listening to this podcast episode, you will learn more about:

  1. Lessons Hans-Martin took from his time in Silicon Valley
  2. Four steps to establishing customer-centricity
  3. What it’s like managing a business with a Co-CEO
  4. Supporting Change, and what most people get wrong about CEOs

If you’d like to know more about Hans-Martin’s work, he can be contacted via LinkedIn, at https://www.linkedin.com/in/hmhellebrand. For more information about Badenova, go to the website at https://www.badenova.de/.

13 Jun 2024140: The Future of Leadership: Empowering People and Embracing the Human Element00:47:31

Andrea engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Ken about the challenges and opportunities faced by CEOs in today's corporate landscape. Andrea shares valuable insights from his extensive experience coaching senior leaders, revealing the secrets to breaking silos, building trust, and becoming a visionary leader.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • CEOs must create a bold future by design, envisioning a purpose-driven future that goes beyond incremental improvements to make a significant impact on society and leave an extraordinary legacy.
  • Breaking silos requires bringing different perspectives together, creating an environment of trust and transparency, and fostering a sense of collective ownership among team members.
  • Successful CEOs act as orchestrators and integrators, focusing on the human element of business and understanding the psychology of their team members to drive performance.
  • Mindset is crucial for effective leadership; instead of pushing people to change their actions, leaders should focus on shifting people's frames of reference to enable them to see new possibilities.
  • Transparency and authenticity are essential for building trust and getting people to buy into the leader's vision, even in the face of ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • CEOs must be willing to make faster decisions, especially when it comes to changing people in the leadership team, rather than waiting for perfect information.
  • Financial performance is the primary driver for replacing CEOs, but those with strong people skills may be given more time to turn things around.
  • The future of leadership requires a different approach, focusing on empowering people, dealing with the human element of business, and creating an environment where people can thrive.

BEST MOMENTS

"Business is made by humans. So, if you really want to be a great leader, you need to understand how psychology works. You need to understand how dealing with humans, which again, it sounds like banal, right, but it's just the basics."

"When you work in a unit, it's in that way when people are so much, you know, committed with each other and had their own back. Gosh, it's an amazing place to work for exactly."

"Trust your gut feeling sometimes because you are experienced, you know, if you have been a leader for many, many years, as most of CEOs had as an experience."

"Human CEOs or people-centred CEOs, they're running the risk of over, again, talking about bias or dealing with their own optimism bias that people can, can achieve at some point."

"I know it's unbiased, but to me, I have a really compassionate about their life and what they're, what they're doing. Again, writing my book, it's early days, but will be available end of the 2024."

11 Jan 2024118: The Dark Side of Artificial Harmony in the Workplace00:12:48

In this episode, Andrea explores what he calls ‘artificial harmony’ and its impact on organisations. He discusses why fake harmony impacts a company and team negatively and talks about how to instead create an environment that thrives on constructive conflict.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Artificial harmony is convenient for senior staff and leaders, it creates the illusion that people are happy
  • If there is only artificial harmony then it isn’t easy or comfortable to have honest conversations
  • The best results happen when there is proactive and useful ‘conflict’ leading to discussions, ideas and solutions
  • Many leaders may prefer artificial harmony because it makes their lives easier as well as preserves their authority
  • Constructive conflict doesn’t create a negative environment
  • Unaddressed conflict can lead to mistrust and decreased team performance

BEST MOMENTS

"Artificial harmony is convenient”

“Conflicts are avoided”

“Artificial harmony kills results”

“Great leaders really recognised the value of constructive conflict, they provoke it intentionally”

02 Aug 2023096: What NOT to Do as a Leader00:09:44

Andrea offers a different perspective about spending time with a bad boss in this episode, particularly focusing on how he discovered what kind of leader he wanted to be from being badly managed in the past. Andrea outlines the things he learnt not to do from his experience with these poor leaders, including why to always show clarity, to always embrace accountability and growth and talks about why leadership is never just a title but the impact we have upon others.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Early in his career, Andrea had many bad bosses!
  • You can approach having bad bosses in two ways, negatively or proactively, recognising what you learnt from them.
  • Communication, demotivation and misguided decision-making were common themes across Andrea’s past bad bosses.
  • Andrea realised, that having these bad bosses could present an opportunity for him, to learn what to do differently and pave the way for his own leadership style.
  • Clarity is one of the main things Andrea learnt from his bad bosses, showing the importance of clear expectations and direction, and eliminating ambiguity and confusion.
  • Learn to nurture an environment where people feel valued and where you can show empathy.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, and avoid anything that would create a blame culture.
  • Bad bosses are the epitome of stagnation, they avoided change and didn’t embrace innovation or have a growth mindset
  • Don’t just be another leader, who reflects and mimics the traits they have had from bad bosses in the past, challenge them and focus on the impact you can have as a leader.

BEST BITS

“They were really masters in demotivation, communication blunders”

“It felt like every day was one long episode of what not to do as a leader”

“If you know who is the person you want to be or become, is already part of the solution”

“Bad bosses showcased the importance of clear expectation and directions”

“Don’t just be another leader”

19 Jul 2023094: Four evidence-based reasons why CEOs don’t invest in self development00:09:05

Are you investing in yourself? What is your relationship with personal development as a CEO or leader?

95% of CEOs don’t invest in themselves but why is this the case? In this episode, Andrea explores the reasons so many CEOs don’t prioritise their personal development and the reasons why this needs to change, especially if they want to be an effective leader and grow a successful business.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The top CEO’s spend 25k on personal development whilst many other CEOs do not, could this be the secret to their success?
  • Many CEOs can suffer from what Andrea calls an overconfidence bias, meaning they don’t perceive that they have a reason to, or need to prioritise personal development
  • Successful CEOS generally attribute success to their own personal skills and abilities so once they have had success, they don’t see the need to progress themselves and work on themselves further
  • A fixed mindset means that a CEO may feel like they can’t alter or change who they are and their skillset
  • Time allocation bias can cause a CEO to not prioritise their own personal development as they are too busy and focused on other tasks within the business
  • CEOs who invest in their personal development see a significant boost in their companies performance
  • Lack of investment into personal development and growth leads to stagnation in the individual and the company as well as eventually failure

BEST BITS

“Fortune 500 CEOS on average spend 25k per year on personal development”

“Past success tends to boost ego too if you aren’t allowing yourself to be balanced”

“This mindset can lead to a belief that investing time and resource in personal development isn’t necessary”

“CEOs saw a 5% increase in profitability within two years of partaking in personal development programmes”

03 May 2023083 : How to Foster a Culture of Innovation with Zack Weisfeld, VP & GM of Intel Ignite00:39:28

Zack is the vice president and general manager of Intel Ignite based in Israel. Zack has also been behind several successful start-ups and was previously the general manager for Microsoft.

As well as being a serial entrepreneur, Zack prides himself on being a corporate entrepreneur, helping large corporate companies innovate and be disruptive as a start-up would, and driving culture change through working with leaders and stakeholders within the company. He joins Andrea to talk about his approach, the critical relationship between innovation and culture and his thoughts on what it takes to be an inspirational and effective leader.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Zack attributes some of his success to being in the right place at the right time. He had the right skill set and attitude just as the internet was starting to take off, he even began one of the first digital agencies!
  • Companies can have start-up style values, such as a growth mindset and being disruptive, but it can be difficult for some roles within a large company to exercise them, ignite helps with that.
  • Large tech companies must engage with start-ups, if they do not then they will quickly become irrelevant.
  • Ignite is described by its clients as a cofounder as a service, they are often more intimate with the team than even their own investors.
  • There are a lot of opportunities in tech in this changing world, but this also means that there are many companies and services that will become irrelevant.
  • Culture is ingrained into organisations and the relationship between culture and innovation is critical. One of the ways to tap into this and drive change is to take people and teams away from their daily environment and work alongside and with start-ups.
  • 2023 is a difficult time for all companies which presents a unique challenge for leaders, to continue to motivate their teams and also incentivise them to stay within the organisation.
  • Challenging times also present opportunities, those who see these and seek them out drive growth and entrepreneurship.
  • Experience can mean that people act on old information and intuition, we have to challenge these ideas and mindsets so we can build and create a different culture with innovative solutions.
  • As a new founder and a leader too, you have to learn to really listen and build those skills.

BEST BITS

“I’ve been a serial entrepreneur, but I’ve also been a corporate entrepreneur”

“We will not be able to compete without that change, that energy, sitting out there in the forefront with these disruptors”

“There’s no option for these large tech companies not to co-operate with start-ups”

“I believe we are going to see a lot of companies go away because what they do is not needed anymore”

“The relationship between innovation and culture is so critical”

“You’re in this tough environment where you have to manage the tough realities and on the other hand be super optimistic”

“I’m an entrepreneur I love challenges, I think that challenging times are opportunities”

“Because of that experience, we sometimes make wrong decisions based on intuition that’s not relevant”

25 Jan 2024120: The Silent Killer of Strategic Thinking.00:10:58

There is one sure way to kill strategic thinking and this is through ‘busyness’. Join Andrea in this episode as he tackles and challenges the perception of always being busy and how it can harm your business.

The World Class Leaders Show BRAND NEW YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Many people feel so busy they are already losing sight of what is really important in both the medium and the long term.
  • If we are already rushing through tasks and moving from one task to another then we don’t allow enough time to analyse and strategise.
  • An overly busy environment often leads to distractions and disruptions.
  • You can find yourself in this busy environment accidentally but once you realise, Andrea encourages you to break out of the cycle so you can operate at your full potential.

BEST MOMENTS

"The pace of business now is incredibly high”

“Busy environments can lead to constant distractions and disruptions”

“I strongly recommend you break this vicious cycle”

01 Aug 2024147: How Top CEOs Lead Through Disruption with Stefano Aversa, Vice Chair of AlixPartners00:44:08

Andrea interviews Stefano Aversa, chair of EMEA and vice chair globally for AlixPartners. Stefano shares his experience of leading through disruption, creating flexible organisations, and driving change. From crisis management to empowering communities, Stefano shares practical tips for leaders navigating uncertainty. Stefano's experience in turnarounds and his work with the Andrea Bocelli Foundation provide a unique perspective on leadership in both business and non-profit sectors.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Disruptions, rather than economic cycles, now dominate the business world, requiring leaders to be more agile and prepared with multiple contingency plans.
  • Creating a small crisis can be an effective strategy to drive change and address underlying issues in an organisation.
  • CEOs today are feeling more uncertain about their roles, with 79% expressing doubts due to technological changes and geopolitical shifts.
  • The trend in leadership is moving towards more consensus-oriented, caring, and authentic styles, although results still ultimately determine a CEO's success.
  • Private equity-backed companies tend to have less patience for underperforming CEOs, typically expecting significant improvements within the first two years.
  • Non-profit organisations can benefit from applying business principles while addressing unique challenges in extreme situations.
  • Talent should be viewed not just as a gift but as an obligation to develop and share with others.
  • Leaders must learn to navigate ambiguity and uncertainty, turning these challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.

BEST MOMENTS

"Crisis is one of the best management skills, but measurement school. I tend to say that the crisis is an opportunity which is too important to miss."

"Sometimes I create the crisis even when there is not, and it could be a small crisis, but for example, very often there is some uneasiness in the organisation."

"The CEOs is more unsure today than they used to be.”

"Talent is an obligation. It's not just a gift. It's an obligation to develop."

22 Jun 2023090: Are There Psychopaths in Your Business?00:10:52

Is it correct to assume that a large proportion of corporate leaders are psychopaths? It’s something many of us have heard anecdotally and in this episode, Andrea explores the most recent research that suggests that yes, many CEOs do indeed have a large proportion of psychopathic traits compared to the general population.

Andrea talks through further research he has found on the topic, the wider impact of these behaviours on the workplace, and what you can do to recognise and manage them.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Varying research believes that around 12-20% of CEOs around the world could be psychopaths.
  • People may not recognise psychopathic traits in a corporate setting but if it is pointed out that traits such as creating conflict, discouraging others and creating hostile work environments you can believe that there may be many more corporate psychopaths in the world.
  • Many leaders show specific behaviours that are considered psychopathic traits but these traits can also be highly effective in business and commonly accepted or missed.
  • Once you can recognise these traits, you need to be wary of them and be aware of the distinction between unhealthy behaviours and ones that have a deeper and more serious impact on individuals and businesses.

BEST BITS

“12% of senior leaders display, at some level, a range of psychopathic traits”

“If you are not yourself in a leadership position, the only thing you can do is be more mindful about how people behave and be clear if you want to work with people with these behaviours”

“There is a distinction between a normal behaviour, from behaviours that are acutally driven by something more, something that has a deeper impact on people and also on business and performance’

09 Nov 2023110: From Napkin Scribble to $90 Million Business with Lisa Rosenthal, CEO of Mayvin00:47:09

Andrea interviews Lisa Rosenthal, CEO of defense and intelligence consulting firm Mayvin. Starting from just a concept scribbled on a napkin, Lisa grew Mayvin from zero to $90 million in revenue with 500 employees in just over 10 years. She shares her journey of entrepreneurship, overcoming challenges, and leading with integrity. Lisa offers insights on topics like company culture, work-life balance, making tough decisions, and always putting people first.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Starting a successful business takes drive, integrity, and surrounding yourself with the right people who share your values and work ethic. Don't let inexperience hold you back if you have a strong mission-driven purpose.
  • Work-life integration is more realistic than work-life balance. Be present wherever you are, and don't feel guilty about shifting priorities day to day.
  • Hire carefully, fire quickly. Keeping someone who is no longer a good fit for the company culture hurts you and them. Have the courage to make needed changes.
  • As a leader you will have to work with individuals who have had very different life experiences, it’s important to tailor your narrative and decisions to suit multiple generations.
  • Communicating with your leaders is key, they can’t implement change or address things they do not know about.
  • Leading means making tough calls that won't always please everyone. Stay focused on the greater good while still showing that you care about people.
  • Listen to employees and keep communication open. Provide training budgets, meaningful mental health support, and show you care in tangible ways.
  • Foster a growth mindset in your team. Believe abilities can be developed with effort. Surround yourself with people smarter than you.

BEST MOMENTS "I quickly discovered that supporting The U. S. government, as well as now NATO and NATO countries, was my calling."

"The struggle is constant. And you want to put people over profits, but at what point does it end? How do you do the right thing all the time?"

"Careful to hire quick to fire. You have to know when the person is no longer right for your stage in your company or that stage in your life."

“We’re [CEOs] doing the best we can with what we have”

"I'd like to have a life. Please don't call me at 10 o'clock at night. I enjoy spending time with my significant other."

“You know how to get ahead, you work for it”

13 Jul 2023093: Why Culture Should Be at the Top of Any Leader’s Agenda with Michael Hansen, CEO of Hempel00:44:35

“Leaders create leaders by passing on responsibility, creating ownership, accountability and trust”

James Kerr - Legacy: What The All Blacks Can Teach Us about the Business of Life

In this episode, Andrea is joined by Michael Hansen, the CEO of Hempel based in Denmark. Michael talks about the role of sustainability in the future success of companies, his approach to people and the human element in being a CEO and also about the unique challenges leaders face in the workplace today including retaining talent. Michael and Andrea also talk in-depth about how important culture is to a company and what you can do as a CEO to influence it.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It usually takes around 6 months for a CEO to learn the basics about a new organization, up to this point they are mostly learning and not making any big rash decisions.
  • Hempel wants to ensure they are a leading industry enterprise and having this goal acts as a ‘lighthouse’ in difficult and more challenging times.
  • Sustainability and how companies can contribute to their industries and their clients will determine the future success of many companies.
  • People, financial robustness, customer-perceived uniqueness and giving back to society are the 4 pillars Michael believes you need for a successful company.
  • Michael is passionate about understanding the realities of colleagues across the world and the differences in leadership style and other attributes to unleash the power to generate the best results.
  • Michael has actively engaged himself to find out why there are so many challenges for women in his organization and what he can do to directly influence this.
  • Asking questions and speaking to people directly, allows a CEO to get a true insight into the company culture, struggles and more.
  • Hempel gives back to society in various ways including via their solutions and products and also by giving and supporting schools and by protecting biodiversity too.
  • Attracting and retaining the best people is one of today’s most difficult tasks. The talented colleagues of today are always looking for the best opportunities for them and they have more options than ever. You have to work on building an environment where they thrive or they will leave.
  • One formula doesn’t work for all employees but if you can instill the right leadership culture and environment, you can help retain good talent.
  • A CEO has a huge impact on a company culture and this can be both negative and positive. A CEO can engage with many more employees by creating the right culture for them than they can by trying to talk to and lead every single one individually.
  • Stay curious, always be open to learning from others, regardless of who they are.9

BEST BITS

“That was a deliberate choice in that we needed to continue to grow at an accelerated pace but in an intelligent way”

“We want to make sure we are among the leading 5 companies, that guide some choices”

“We should listen to our leaders, but we should also listen ourselves, closer to the frontline”

“It’s a very mobile workforce we have today, it’s a very ambitious workforce”

“Culture can drive performance, but it can also drive engagement in employees”

Join the conversation and learn how you can help your organisation learn to excel at execution!

YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Effective strategy execution requires translating the strategy throughout the organisation, engaging individuals at every level, and setting clear expectations for roles and responsibilities.
  • Organisations often make assumptions about their business, leading to ineffective communication and a lack of understanding among employees regarding their contributions to the company's success.
  • Establishing a feedback loop by engaging employees in co-creating and refining the strategy ensures alignment and allows for quick adaptations to changes in the business environment.
  • Implementing a performance measurement system is crucial for tracking progress, identifying areas of improvement, and documenting the organisation's execution journey.
  • Goal setting should be done at every level of the organisation, with near-term goals based on the immediate needs of the company and longer-term goals aligned with the overall strategy.
  • Courageous leadership is essential for successful strategy execution, as leaders must be willing to have difficult conversations and ensure everyone is working in the best interest of the team.

BEST MOMENTS

"If you can't get the ideas down through the organisation and if you can't get people understanding what they need to do to contribute, then you lose a lot."

"Organisations don't execute, people do."

"Goal setting needs to be looked at much, much differently if you're going to execute."

"Execution takes courageous leadership. You have to be able to have the difficult conversations with your people and work through them on a consistent basis."

22 Feb 2024124: When Should New CEOs and Executives Shake Up Their Teams?00:14:39

Should you keep your leadership or start to make changes? In this episode, Andrea answers this question and talks about how to know it’s the right time to make changes in your leadership team, particularly if you are new to the role. If you are facing this dilemma right now, Andrea offers some perspective and considerations to help you make decisions.

The World Class Leaders Show BRAND NEW YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Incompetence is the first clear criteria for needing to assess team changes. If an individual or team are incompetent this cannot be put off.
  • People can progress and change under new leadership, so assess if this is possible in a reasonable timeframe.
  • High performers can be detrimental if they feed into or create a toxic culture. Culture is more important in the medium to long term of a companies success.
  • Personality counts. If there are team members that can’t work cohesively and collaboratively then you need to make some changes.

BEST MOMENTS

"They don’t necessarily show potential”

“High performers can be assets but they can also be liabilities when they fail to adhere to the company direction”

“Culture is really what is going to make the different in the medium-long term”

“CEOs are probably taking too long to make a decision”

23 Mar 2023077: How to Think Systematically in Silos-Driven Organizations00:10:23

Organizations are unlearning how to think systematically.

They face higher complexity than in the past but - instead of trying to make sense of their problems in terms of wholes - they split them down into parts.

This is how they reinforce unconsciously silos over unity. They look at one problem without understanding the wider relationships of each part.

In episode 077 of my podcast, 'The World Class Leaders Show,' I discuss about the ways organizations are learning to think as a system.

05 Apr 2023079: How to Talk in Organizations to Create Commitment00:10:56

Are you happy with the way people talk and communicate in your organisation? In this episode, Andrea talks about how communication is directly linked to commitment and how the language you and your team impacts the results you see, revealing the do’s and don’t’s of communication if you want to see effective results.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Many individuals struggle to take responsibility and be fully committed in work today.
  • There’s a strong connection between the way we communicate with one another at work and the results we achieve.
  • It’s comfortable to talk about the past, it doesn’t have expectations or usually any actions either. To create effective results we need to be in the present and look to the future.
  • When people start talking about the past, stop them and change the conversation. This will allow you to create commitment-generating conversation instead.
  • You need to use specific and direct language and communication to create success.

BEST BITS

“The way people talk in organisations is so critical, it’s so important”

“When people start talking about the past, they get really comfortable about talking about the past”

“Start talking in a way that generates commitment”

“Committed language is what really produces a different level of results”

“A past-driven conversation usually involves a lot of words”

LEARNING MOMENTS

01:49: Are we underrating the way we talk in our organisations? 03:10: The problem with talking about the past 05:00: Creating commitment-generating communication 06:00: The differences between wishful thinking and committed language

03 Nov 2022058: The Journey from Founder to CEO with Eric Rubenstein00:35:58

It’s no shock to anyone that starting up a business comes with a lot of challenges, setbacks, and disappointments. People who are driven by the money that can come with success often forget that it takes more than just a good product. It’s understanding your market and understanding people. The people you surround yourself with as part of your team, and the customer.

For episode 058 of ‘The World Class Leaders Show’, I invited Eric Rubenstein, Founder and Managing Partner of New Climate Ventures.

Since its launch in October 2021, NCV has made several investments that cover areas involving climate tech, alternative materials, and food tech – as well as other emissions-avoiding technologies.

Before founding NCV, Eric held positions leading venture investing activities for commodities as well as leading fundamental strategy for oil, refined products, natural gas liquids, plastics, and recycled plastics.

By listening to this podcast episode, you will learn more about:

  1. What are the best attributes of a Founder/CEO
  2. The importance of self-awareness to grow your company
  3. Why diversifying sectors is critical to success
  4. The Founder Journey From Start-Up To Scale

If you’d like to know more about Eric’s work, he can be contacted via LinkedIn, at https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric--rubenstein/. For more information about New Climate Ventures, visit the website at https://www.newclimateventures.com/.

09 Mar 2023075: How to Ask People to Change Their Behaviours00:09:20

How do you ask people to change their behaviors?

In my experience, leaders often give feedback to people without being specific. They tend to say things like: "I want you to be less arrogant," or "I want you to have a more entrepreneurial spirit," and so on—without backing up their statements with any solid evidence of what they mean by those words.

For this episode of ‘The World Class Leaders Show,’ I will share specific tips and actions on giving feedback to people and their wrong behavior. And hopefully, it can give you ideas on how to use these specific feedback tips in order to make positive changes in their behavior.

By listening to this podcast episode, you will learn more about:

(01:53) Underestimating the Importance of Giving Clear Feedback

(03:04) When It Comes to Behaviors, Specificity Is Important

(04:33) How to Share Specific Feedback on Behavior?

(05:14) Why Specificity Is Critical in Giving Feedback?

(06:46) Why Leaders Need to Give Specific Feedback

10 Aug 2023097: Why hierarchy interferes with growth with Talal Shamoon, CEO of Intertrust00:52:28

Andrea is joined by Intertrust CEO Talal Shamoon. Talal talks about adaptability in business, why the absence of strict hierarchy can be an advantage and why your team and the tools you give them are one of the greatest assets for any CEO. Talal is an entrepreneur by nature and talks about how this has aided his success and gives his thoughts on different CEO archetypes including detailed feedback on Elon Musks' leadership style.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Intertrust has transformed what they see to be one of the biggest modern business problems, allowing competitors to cooperate without having to collaborate.
  • Silicon Valley is not so much about the company or the idea it’s about the team that works together. Frequently, people who have complementary skills work together and move from company to company.
  • Intertrust has remained a very agile company despite its size and age, it’s always adapted to fit the needs of consumers and to take opportunities.
  • Talal has set up the company structure to have less hierarchy, if someone knows more than him, he listens to them.
  • Intertrust pays attention to its size, if they get too big they assess and have sold parts in the past. They find that once they get past the 150-employee mark they meet different challenges.
  • Life isn’t easier as a CEO if you treat others with respect and run an ethical business.
  • Elon Musk is often criticised, but he leads from the front and has the ability to help anyone get their job done when they’re struggling.
  • Hiring very specialised people and matching your team effectively to the problem you want to solve, means you can solve problems that others may feel are impossible.
  • As a leader, you need to give your team the right tools so they can succeed.
  • Talal never makes decisions by himself, he has a group of people that he trusts to help him work through them.

BEST BITS

“This company is very rare, it’s been evergreen it’s entire life”

“There’s no real hierarchy we organise around problems that need to be solved”

“To create shareholder value I have to ensure the team remains the best team in the world”

“You team around tasks and problems you don’t create a hierarchy”

“Companies like Motorola and Nokia had to die for companies like Apple and Samsung to be born”

“It’s teams and tools”

“I never make decisions by myself… I don’t hold the truth, I don’t own the truth, no one owns the truth”

“Ultimately the best way to learn is from other people”

14 Mar 2024127: How to Fuel Passion in Organizations with Moustafa Hamwi00:48:34

Andrea Petrone interviews Moustafa Hamwi, a passionate expert on mindset mastery and igniting true passion. Moustafa shares his incredible journey of self-discovery and the valuable lessons he learned along the way. He talks to Andrea about how he learned to be a better leader and the things all leaders can do to not only be more effective but to live a more authentic existence too.

YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Leaders must have the courage to face themselves in the mirror and the humility to acknowledge when they need help dealing with challenges.
  • To master your mindset, first, heal your past by acknowledging and releasing specific traumas or stories, then focus on mindset mastery techniques to slingshot into the future.
  • The role of a leader is no longer to be an all-knowing, omnipresent figure but to be a decision-making machine that considers all inputs and variables, often relying on intuition.
  • A temporary identity crisis is a necessary part of change; embrace the journey of transformation, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
  • Recognise that your most valuable asset is your time; start taking action towards a more meaningful and purposeful life.
  • Move closer to your passion by doing more of what you like and less of what you don't like, gradually subcontracting or delegating tasks that don't align with your purpose.

BEST MOMENTS

"The role of a leader is no longer to be that all knowing, omnipresent, omnipotent person. It's the total opposite. It's about shared leadership, where the leader has to now acknowledge that the layers that work in collaboration, the CXO layer and the director layer are the actual, guys that are doing all the work and their input is a lot more valuable."

"The universe operates in that way. It sends us a message. We don't understand it. It will do it, repeat the pattern. And we find ourselves in those repeated patterns."

"It's beyond just making it as a gimmick because the whole vision, mission, all of that has always been there. But it was just a document on the wall. It came from here back to the conversation about coming from here. When we come from a place of genuinity and truth, and if a company doesn't care about it, they don't care about it."

"True passion, true passion is consistently doing what you love, what you're good at, and is a value to the world."

"My learning here is that most of my and other people's regrets are for the things that we did not do. rather than the things that we did”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Moustafa is a bestselling author, international speaker, and mindset coach.

His background spans diverse disciplines — from executive coaching, hypnotherapy, yoga, and meditation to adventure sports and nature healing.

29 Feb 2024125: The Human Side of Digital Transformation with William Ruh, Former CEO of Lendlease Digital and GE Digital00:48:30

Andrea interviews William Ruh, former CEO of Lendlease Digital and GE Digital, about leadership during digital transformation. William shares how cultural alignment and change management are critical for success, often more so than the technology itself. Rue also discusses the need for CEOs to be curious, keep learning, and pivot quickly in the face of increasing complexity. He talks about establishing strong partnerships with boards and maintaining personal resilience to handle the demands of leadership today.

Leaders Show BRAND NEW YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59dect0RJ5cuxIXsX7hCRw

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Digital transformation success depends heavily on cultural alignment and change management skills like communication, empathy and enrolment.
  • Leaders should identify and partner with "the coalition of the willing" in the organisation to drive change rather than trying to change everyone at once.
  • Monetisation strategy for digital innovation must be clear - either embedded in existing offerings or as a new line of business.
  • Running an internal start-up has unique challenges - the speed of a start-up with the processes of an established business.
  • With the increasing pace of change, CEO resilience, learning agility and the ability to quickly pivot strategy are critical leadership capabilities.
  • Strong board relationships and a personal support system are essential to handle the pressures faced by modern CEOs.

BEST MOMENTS

"The soft skills are the most important thing. How you help the organisation through [digital transformation] is more important in some ways than what your technology is."

"You've got to be able to make that cultural shift. Existing cultures and businesses often find it very difficult to embrace the change."

"I realised that I'm responsible for seeing the world change. I'm responsible for learning gen AI...I'm responsible for figuring out where things are going."

"If you're not good at managing your board, the board is going to manage you. So that is the challenge many CEOs definitely wrestle with."

02 Nov 2023109: The CEO’s Dilemma: Pressure vs. Privilege (Which Wins?)00:10:11

There is more pressure than ever being put on CEOs in the world right now, from the financial crisis to the explosion of AI application in the workforce, it’s not easy. In this episode, Andrea talks about changing your mindset to help you deal with these challenges and offers some practical tips on what you can do to manage being a CEO in one of the most difficult periods in history.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Being a CEO today is very different to the past, many CEOs aren’t hopeful for the future.
  • Recent surveys reflect that CEOs are under intense scrutiny from employees and boards and many of them are struggling with this pressure.
  • Some believe we need to reevaluate the role of a CEO in these modern and demanding times.
  • If leaders and CEOs can challenge their own mindsets, particularly around perceived complexity, they will be able to tackle the many difficulties presented to them as a modern CEO.
  • Challenge what you perceive as a fact, it may just be your perception and that means it can be changed.

BEST MOMENTS "We’re really going to talk about the future of a CEO”

“Being a CEO during these times, is not maybe viewed in the same way”

“2023 is a nightmare for even the toughest leader”

“It’s about changing your mindset in order to get a different possibility in your mind”

“Most of the things you perceive as a fact are just interpretations”

17 Nov 2022060: Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot on Building a Bold Vision and Perseverance00:48:33

It’s not so common to meet CEOs who have built a bold vision for their companies and didn’t stop until they achieve it.

Most leaders don’t have either the courage or the persistence to go beyond the drift and make a significant impact. They prefer to play safe and go for more predictable outcomes.

Not Dr. Doron Myersdorf, co-founder of StoreDot. StoreDot’s Mission is to use nanoscale metalloids and proprietary compounds and develop ultra-fast-charging (XFC) battery technology that overcomes major barriers to EV adoption: range and charging concerns.

In this episode, Doron shared his passion, dedication, and persistence to achieve his bold vision to revolutionize the electric automotive industry.

12 Oct 2023106: Driving Psychological Safety Through Technology with Ollie Lingwood-Craddock, CEO of Rungway00:35:34

Andrea interviews Ollie Craddock, CEO of employee listening platform Runway, on this episode of World Class Leader Show. Ollie shares his experience leading multiple companies and how he helped grow Mind Tools to 20 million users. He explains how Rungway captures real-time employee feedback to help leaders understand problems and resistance to change. The continuous feedback loop provides psychological safety for employees to contribute ideas and accelerate decision-making. Ollie and Andrea discuss how technology like Rungway can enable culture change but still requires leaders to also role model openness.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Rungway gathers ongoing employee feedback so leaders can address issues quickly before they become crises. It provides visibility into problems leaders may not see from the top floor.
  • Leaders responding authentically to employee concerns builds psychological safety and fuels more participation. Vulnerable leadership creates a flywheel effect.
  • Technology like Rungway enables culture change but isn't the complete solution. Senior leaders must role model openness and transparency for it to work.
  • During major change, communicating the vision and involving employees in the journey is critical but challenging with remote/hybrid work.
  • CEOs don't have all the answers. Good CEOs admit they don't know and empower teams to find solutions.
  • Anonymity helps underrepresented groups feel safe speaking up. Overlooking their input means missing ideas and not hearing the full employee voice.

BEST MOMENTS "If the senior team responds to that in a really human way, very quickly with the right tone, and that's where we help...that creates this kind of flywheel effect."

"I don't think we'll ever return to the full, full-time in the office. I think that world is gone."

"I would challenge any senior person who said they know everything because you don't."

"Colleagues of color are three times more likely to post anonymously."

ABOUT THE HOST

My name is Andrea Petrone. I'm a Human Performance and Leadership Advisor, Executive Coach and International Speaker. I help leaders and their teams to change their mindsets and master their leadership capabilities so they can achieve extraordinary performance. 23 May 2024137: The Secret to Execution: Why Ownership Beats Accountability Every Time00:10:50

In this episode, Andrea introduces a different mindset to help your people execute your strategy. He talks about the difference between accountability and ownership and how to implement lasting changes in how your team works.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Accountability doesn’t always mean people are doing what they should be.
  • Decisions are avoided, information isn’t shared and opportunities are missed when there isn’t proper ownership.
  • The key to getting results is having people own those results.
  • Ownership is driven by intrinsic motivation, so it is something that is a personal choice that is purpose driven by the individual.
  • The key is to get your team motivated and to buy into the results you want to achieve.
  • Results are a by product of how people talk, the language they use and how things are communicated.

BEST MOMENTS

“Accountability is a bit of a lip service”

“Part of performance is to some extent, make sure you do what you’re supposed to do”

“I don’t believe results is actually making people accountable”

“Ownership is driven by intrinsic motivation”

“It’s rewarding behaviour it’s not rewarding goals”

02 Mar 2023074: How to Succeed in a Male-Dominated Industry as a CEO With Verona Frankish00:42:45

Some of the world’s most powerful businesswomen are quitting. Last week, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, announced she is leaving the company to start a new chapter and follow her passion. Likewise, Meta's chief business officer Marne Levine is stepping down after 13 years with the company in order to “recharge and prioritize some quality time with family” before beginning her “next professional chapter.”

As a huge sponsor of women sitting at the top table, I feel that gender equality might become just a wishful thinking. Something good only for corporate branding and PR stunt.

For episode 070 of my podcast, ‘The World Class Leaders Show’, I invited Verona Frankish CEO of Yopa, an award-winning estate agency in the UK backed by some of the biggest names in the property industry, to discuss how a female CEO can thrive in a male-dominated industry. She also demonstrates that leading a purpose-driven organization isn’t only a case of setting goals and making tough decisions, but also of building trust with your team and customers.

14 Aug 2024149: How Leaders Can Effectively Navigate Change During Tough Times with Victoria Pelletier00:41:29

Victoria Pelletier, a renowned corporate executive and turnaround expert, discusses the intricacies of leading a company through challenging times. Sharing her insights on on how to effectively thrive during tough times, Victoria emphasizes the importance of clear communication, empathy, and effective leadership.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Victoria emphasizes the importance of whole human leadership, which involves recognizing and supporting the whole person, showing empathy, vulnerability, transparency, care, and compassion.

  • Successful change management involves transparent communication, engagement, and aligning incentives with desired behaviors to drive successful transformations.

  • Leaders are facing increased pressure to deliver results in a short timeframe, which can impact their leadership style and decision-making processes.

  • Organizations need to focus not only on technology skills but also on developing attitudes, mindsets, and skills that promote flexibility, adaptability, and innovation.

  • HR should be a strategic business partner reporting directly to the CEO, focusing on talent management, development, and aligning with the organization's strategic goals.

BEST MOMENTS

"I jokingly say I'm not very good with being idle. So when I made the decision to leave my last employer, which was Accenture, in June of last year, I thought, oh, now I have time to write a book."

"The most successful transformations come when people are on board with the change. And getting people on board means sharing, being as transparent as you can."

" 'WIFM. What's in it for me'. I think that's a really key component of that change management process. The communication is down to an individual level."

"Everything you've ever wanted lives on the other side of fear."

19 Apr 2023081: The Power of Conscious Leadership with Ravi Venkatesan, CEO of Cantaloupe00:44:00

Ravi is the previous COO and current CEO of software company Cantaloupe and joins Andrea to talk about how to be a powerful CEO and lead an organisation.

Ravi and Andrea discuss the flexibility needed around business models for companies to pivot, the biggest challenges international businesses face and why you must remain the eternal student to stay ahead in your career. Ravi also talks about how your leadership style directly impacts the effectiveness of your team and influences company culture and performance and how he personally inspires his team and unlocks potential.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Ravi started in consulting for Accenture, which gave him access and experience with large corporate companies where he learnt about strategies and business models that work.
  • It’s important to have a vision that inspires your team.
  • Working internationally isn’t just about translating things, it’s about understanding and recognising cultural differences and adapting to them, tailoring the company and product to the country.
  • Legalities and regulations in every country are vastly different, this is one of Cantaloupe's major challenges, particularly in regards to payments. They have to tailor their software and approaches in each country.
  • Cantaloupe have pivoted to their consumer needs and preferences, they transformed their business model to be subscription based as this is how clients wanted to use their product, leading to higher client satisfaction as well as higher margin for them.
  • Often smaller to medium-sized companies are quicker to adapt and pivot, while larger companies have to contend with the bureaucracy associated with change and also often attitudes that are resistant to it too.
  • How we manage our inner state directly impacts those we lead and the relationships we build. To be an effective leader you need to consciously manage yourself to build your company culture and foster your team into making the right decisions.
  • One of the key things Ravi focuses on is looking for opportunities for new talent and unlocking potential in existing team members.
  • Too frequently leaders ignore people’s potential but if we can engage team members and inspire them, we can get so much more, for them and for the company.
  • All companies have a collective consciousness made up of their employees, partners and clients. If leaders can tap into this consciousness and influence it, then it will also have an impact on performance as a whole.

BEST BITS

“Sometimes you can have the best team in place but if it’s a failing business model it starts going downhill”

“It’s important to have a vision that inspires, people who work for a paycheck, you’re only getting compliance from them. If you want amazing results, then they need to be inspired”

“It’s not just about translating language it’s about blending in with the culture, the business, the way of interacting, each country is so different”

“All that risk is covered on our side and that model has led to much more satisfaction with our customers”

“The larger an organisation the harder it is for them to accept a major change”

“How we manage our own inner state with reflect in that outer behaviour and our outer behaviour directly leads to the kind of trust somebody builds as a leader”

 “Heart-based leadership isn’t very common”

“Constantly upgrading talent and unlocking potential is something I spend a lot of time on”

“You are showing the organisation that you are there for them rather than being like other CEOs”

“Organisations have a consciousness, which is their collective consciousness of everybody who works there…if the impact I can have as a leader is to raise the level of consciousness of my organisation”

12 Apr 2023080: Transforming for Growth with Gian Luca Grondona, CHRO of Webuild00:51:18

Gian Luca Grondona is the Chief HR, Organization & Systems Officer of Webuild Group a global player specialized in the construction of large, complex infrastructures. He joins Andrea in this episode.

Andrea initially interviewed Gian Luca via LinkedIn but wanted to share this incredibly valuable conversation with his podcast audience too! Andrea and Gian Luca delve deep into the role and purpose of HR and people in the transformation of an organisation. They discuss how you can improve decision-making in large organisations, how to develop and retain knowledge internally as well as how to create engaged people and teams to generate and inspire success.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  •  The biggest lesson Gian Luca has learnt in his time at various global corporations is to give trust and responsibility to people, to teach others and delegate.
  • The construction industry has embedded risk. This is one of the challenges Webuild has to contend with and one of the reasons they are trying to centralise their risk management.
  • Sustainability is something Webuild are passionate about and is working towards in all of its projects.
  • People are an integral part of a business so of course, they have a huge impact when a company is going through a transformation and the success of this transformation is underpinned by the individuals and teams within the organisation.
  • Transforming its bidding process, to engage all necessary departments and dividing responsibility accordingly has allowed WeBuild to increase its contract conversion by 50%
  • Innovation can be tricky to inspire in industries such as construction but you can facilitate it within teams by first engaging your leaders. If you can inspire them and challenge their thinking then you can begin to change the culture within teams too.
  •  A lean way to make innovation easy, is by investing in innovation in core functions of the business, where it will have the biggest impact.
  • People development is essential and something all leaders should have at the top of their agenda.
  • Anticipating the future needs of a team is a great way to create a plan for the development of your people.
  • How you communicate is one of the biggest ways you can have an influence on and impact the engagement of your people.

BEST BITS

“Giving trust to people, you lose sometimes, but you win the majority of the time”

“We have and will continue to transform this industry”

“If we keep thinking with the eyes of the past we cannot make this change”

“The thing I am most proud of is 11 of the people that were working with me have become Chief Human Resources Officers in companies”

08 Dec 2022063: Five reasons why creating a bold vision will transform your company00:15:19

Creating a bold vision is not what many CEOs do.

Many leaders play conventional by either creating a fluffy vision to hang on the wall or by not finding the courage to aspire to what looks impossible in the present.

They're stuck in their own perspectives that limit them to think bigger. To achieve the impossible.

On the other hand, some (very few though) leaders go beyond what looks possible right now. They see a different future for their companies. And they are committed, and they stand for bringing that future into the current existence.

In this episode, I share five reasons why creating a new future for the business should be at the top of any CEO's priority.

11 Jul 2024144; Balancing Board Relations and Bold Leadership in Private Equity | Andrea on X-Factor Podcast00:39:53

The roles are reversed in this episode as Andrea is interviewed on the X-Factor podcast. Andrea dives deep into the high-stakes world of private equity leadership and shares invaluable insights on thriving under pressure, mastering mindset, and balancing strategy with execution.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Performance coaching is not about fixing weaknesses but enhancing abilities to succeed at a higher level, focusing on the connection between mindset, action, and performance.
  • Successful leaders in uncertain environments must balance short-term results with long-term vision, dealing with ambiguity and creating a bold future while managing current challenges.
  • In private equity-backed companies, leaders must make decisions quickly with limited information, trusting instinct and simplifying processes to avoid unnecessary complexity.
  • Effective CXOs strike a balance between respecting their private equity board and confidently advancing their own ideas, fostering open communication and transparency.
  • Execution is crucial in private equity environments, with boards expecting management teams to implement strategies effectively rather than just focusing on planning.
  • Leaders must clearly communicate strategy throughout the organisation, ensuring collective ownership and empowering teams to execute efficiently.
  • Mindset shifts are essential for high performance, allowing leaders to change their frame of reference and achieve extraordinary results.
  • Building strong relationships with board members, including one-on-one connections, can lead to better support and involvement in strategic decisions.

BEST MOMENTS

"The only way to drive performance in any organisation, either for ourselves, for the business, is by, of course, changing our actions. But the only way to change our actions is by shifting our mindset."

"Those leaders that will be able to work on a burning platform, meanwhile creating that future that is ambitious, is bold, is important for investors, is important as well for employees, they're going to succeed."

"Good news [travels] fast, bad news [travels] faster. So transparency, openness, you're not going to do yourselves any favours by delaying shared information."

"The reason why most of the time organisations really struggle to execute a strategy is because the strategy is not clear or because there are so many contradictory points in the strategy."

"There is an expectation strategy is defined by the board, but the reality is the board is just waiting for the organisation to execute."

22 Aug 2024150: Are You Really Committed to Become An Impactful Leader?00:09:30

Andrea spends this episode looking at the crucial distinction between commitment and interest, emphasizing the importance of true commitment in driving results. He highlights how many individuals and leaders often mistake interest for commitment, leading to shallow dedication and a lack of resilience when faced with challenges.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It is crucial to distinguish between commitment and interest. Commitment involves dedication, perseverance, and facing difficulties head-on, while interest leads to superficial engagement and giving up when things get tough.

  • Commitment is about depth and resilience, pushing through challenges and making sacrifices for something meaningful. Interest, on the other hand, only drives initial enthusiasm but lacks the depth to sustain effort.

  • Commitment is what drives personal and company ambition, leading to tangible results. Without true commitment, individuals and teams may struggle to achieve their goals.

  • Growth only happens outside of the comfort zone, and commitment is a demonstration of stepping beyond what is easy, convenient, or comfortable. It requires going beyond the superficial engagement of mere interest.

  • The importance of demonstrating commitment through actions, such as consistently showing up and putting in the hard work, to drive ambition and achieve desired outcomes.

BEST MOMENTS

"Commitment is about depth and resilience, while interest is about superficial engagement."

"Growth only happens outside of the comfort zone, and commitment is a demonstration that you are stepping outside of that."

"I'm showing up here every week because I'm committed, because that is how I can drive the ambition of this podcast."

"Are people really interested in something or are they really committed? There are some indicators for you to be more present about how people demonstrate their commitment."

28 Jun 2023091: A CEO’s Guide to Leading Successful Change Initiatives with Donald B. Hawthorne00:52:12

In a world where the pace of change is only accelerating, the ability to drive effective change is becoming even more important. Yet, some 70% of change initiatives historically fail. Many books and articles offer theories about how to lead change. But what is missing is practical wisdom that is accessible to executive teams. In this conversation, Donald B. Hawthorne – a 6-time former CEO – talks about the specific methods he has used over the years to drive change.

Donald B. Hawthorne is a GTM Specialist with over 40 years of experience in companies including start-ups as an executive consultant.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sometimes having an external person come into a business to drive change can mean it’s easier to be swift with change and implement it effectively.
  • The missing link often found in leadership, is the requirement for intellectual honesty within teams as well as external clients, it’s important to bring any issues and changes out into the open.
  • If management isn’t open and honest with employees about what is happening within an organization the employees will become more and more skeptical.
  • Ask your team, what’s working, what isn’t working, and if you were in charge tomorrow what would you do differently? This makes them feel safe to speak up and start to collaborate with leaders and managers.
  • Toxic individuals can cause a hostile work environment but generally can do well personally within the business. Honesty and intellectuality allow leaders to flush out the toxic people and highlight the workers they want within your company.
  • Talk to your customers, and ask them the right questions to find out how your product does and doesn’t work for them.
  • Your future leaders will self-identify themselves as they will step up to get involved in change-making, additional responsibilities, and raising issues, all you need to do is create an open environment that fosters autonomy and honesty.
  • Silos and the lack of sharing information are one of the biggest issues companies face, it’s better in Don’s opinion to face and deal with disruption by allowing consistent open discussions and autonomy to change things than to remain in a culture that doesn’t collaborate fully.
  • Board meetings can be likened to a performance, often the core issues that impact the business every day are overlooked.
  • The biggest thing Don has learned as a leader is that good people want to make a difference every day and management teams don’t ask enough, are we clearing the pathway so that they can?

BEST BITS

“Employees know more within an organization and a business than many executives care to remember”

“what’s working, what isn’t working, and if you were in charge tomorrow what would you do differently?”

“Transparency is the key to drive performance”

“We’re going to measure performance on the real issues”

“It allowed me as a CEO to be really well informed on the edges, it allowed me to ask questions and pick up on nuances”

“People don’t talk as honestly when a VP is around”

“It’s a dynamic world, you have to be willing to accept the fact that you’re dealing with uncertainty”

“Good people want to make a difference every day and management teams don’t ask enough, are we clearing the pathway so they can?”

29 Mar 2023078: How to Stop the Fear of Decision Making in Your Team00:10:16

Andrea has witnessed many organisations struggling with decision making and, in this episode, offers great insight into why this is and more importantly, what you can do to stop this happening to yourself, your team and your organisation and continue to lead effectively.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Even team members who appear to be engaged can struggle with making decisions
  • The uncertainty of the world, particularly economically adds complexity to decision making and this can impact individuals' confidence, even those who are experienced.
  • It’s easy to make decisions when you are in your comfort zone but disruption and innovation never comes from comfort, you have to learn to make tough decisions.
  • To eliminate the fear of decisions you need to eliminate blame culture
  • If you put off making decisions, you still have to make them eventually but instead under more pressure and stress.
  • Build a culture of openness, transparency and where people feel they can speak up and make mistakes, and then people will make fast and innovative decisions.
  • Are there ways you can reduce the pressure your team is feeling from you? If you can reduce the pressure you are giving, your team will feel more at ease with making decisions

BEST BITS

“They participate, but when it’s time to make decisions, they step back”

“It’s easy to make a decision in your comfort zone”

“Think about the culture you build, there could be something there”

“Culture and pressure have an important role in the ability of people to make decisions”

02 May 2024134: The Secret to Successful Women Leaders with Lisa Baird, CEO of NextUp00:45:16

Andrea Petrone interviews Lisa Baird, a trailblazing leader with extensive experience across private and non-profit sectors. Lisa shares her invaluable insights on the evolving leadership landscape in 2024, the challenges and opportunities for women in leadership roles, and the importance of fostering an inclusive workplace.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In 2024, leaders must navigate a complex business environment, manage diverse stakeholders, and adapt to the transformative impact of the pandemic on the workforce.
  • Women seeking leadership roles should develop a unique "plus one" skill that sets them apart and adds value to their organisation.
  • Confidence is crucial for women in leadership; they can build it by taking on responsibilities outside of work and creating a supportive network.
  • Men play a vital role as allies in creating an inclusive workplace and actively sponsoring women's career advancement.
  • Embracing AI and other emerging technologies can give women a competitive edge and drive business growth.
  • Leaders should cultivate a personal board of advisors to provide guidance, accountability, and a fresh perspective on personal and professional growth.

BEST MOMENTS

"Leadership in 2024 is vastly different than it was even just a few years ago."

"If women in particular falling out because of a lot of reasons, you're never going to get to anything other than a little bit of representation."

"Nowadays, my personal board of advisors are younger people. And I'm really learning a lot from this next generation of leadership."

"Don't believe that the world looks like Instagram or LinkedIn where everything that always, that you post is always, you know, an emoji heart and balloons, you know, talk about your mistakes, talk about those things, own them."

"It's not network, like let me network so I can find a job. It's network to develop relationships that will serve you and allow you to serve others over a lifetime."

26 Apr 2023082: The Peril of Bilateral Conversations00:08:17

What's your appetite for team meetings?

It seems an obvious question but I have seen many Team Leaders favour bilateral conversations rather than dealing with challenging conversations with the team.

In this episode, I discuss these situations in more details.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Personality and attitude play a part in how leaders like to communicate with members of their team, introverts in particular may avoid conducting large team meetings and have a preference for bilateral conversations
  • Some leaders may also avoid team meetings as they don’t want to have an open conversation with everyone in their team. There may be members they suspect will bring up topics they would rather avoid.
  • There is no collaboration element in one-to-one conversation it can also lend itself to gossip which is bad for morale and a waste of energy.
  • Whole team meetings prevent silos from being created and sustained.
  • If you only have one-to-ones, it can be difficult to keep everyone on your team on the same page and working in the same direction.

BEST BITS

“Many Leaders still prefer having a lot of 121 conversations, very bilateral and very few team meetings”

“It becomes to some extent, to become a silo conversation because there is no way to have a broader view about the situation”

“It might lead to gossip, to gossip and hearsay”

31 May 2023087: 5 Leadership Lessons from The Stoic Philosophers that will expand your perspective00:13:08

Join Andrea as he shares the 5 leadership lessons he has discovered, to expand your perspective and inspire and engage as a leader.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Focus on what you can control. It’s common to want to place blame onto people and things you have no control over, shift your mindset and focus your attention on what you can influence.
  2. Embrace adversity and learn from it. Challenges and obstacles should be seen as opportunities for growth and self-improvement
  3. Practice emotional intelligence. Learn to practice emotional control and rationality.
  4. Lead by example. Leading by example, with your actions, is more effective than just giving instructions.
  5. Maintain an attitude of gratitude. Appreciate the present moment and find contentment in what you already have.

BEST BITS

“I’m a big fan of reading from past experiences from past leaders, the deeper you go the more you discover”

“Make the best use of what is in your power and take the rest as it happens”

“What stands in the way becomes the way”

“We [as a society] lost the importance of emotional intelligence”

“By embodying the value and principles they advocate leaders can inspire and gain the trust of their team members”

“Sometimes it’s good to go back to basics”

30 May 2024138: How to fight complacency as a CEO00:11:26

Complacency is a risk for any CEO. In this episode, Andrea discusses how CEOs can prevent themselves from becoming complacent. He talks about how to identify signs of complacency and what steps can be taken to prevent or reverse it.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Success can breed complacency, being competent can mean you become too comfortable with your existing knowledge and routine
  • Every leader should be aware of the risks of becoming complacent
  • You need to create a learning agenda for yourself with a plan and goals to keep you motivated and to continue growth
  • An insular perspective can drive complacency. An outside perspective can allow leaders to see their role differently.
  • Plan for the future and growth to prevent complacency.

BEST MOMENTS

“Complacency really often arises when leaders become too comfortable with their existing knowledge and routines”

“Do you have a learning agenda?”

“When leaders become too focused on internal processes, conditions and culture they often miss external opportunities”

“Complacency can set in when an organisation becomes overly reliant on its current success”

Sharesz joins Andrea to talk about how to find and build resilience as a leader and the impact this can have on company culture and business success.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sharesz believes that it is up to us what we do with our 24 hours and if we focus and are open to always being uncomfortable enough to learn we can achieve anything.
  • Most people do not get things handed to them, you have to look for and grab the opportunities you can yourself.
  • If you can establish a common language within a team, and follow defined processes and systems this creates alignment and reduces conflict and friction.

  • You must align your team behind the same purpose, to create engagement and ownership to all members.

BEST BITS

“Every year I told myself I want to learn something new, something unfamiliar”

“I always looked forward and created the opportunities”

“Leadership begins with self-leadership”

“If you’re kind to yourself you can be kind to others”

“You cannot control another person's actions, what you can do is control yourself”

27 Jun 2024142: Keeping The Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive in Organizations00:12:09

This week Andrea revisits a past episode, How To Preserve the Entrepreneurial Mindset in Your Organization. Andrea shares ‘the thing’ that keeps most CEOs he has had on the show up at night! He then discusses the four pieces of advice he would give to help tackle it. Andrea also gives an update on a network he is creating, drop him an email if you are interested in getting involved.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • As a company develops and grows, entrepreneurial spirit can be lost.
  • Flexibility, agility and speed are all attributes of entrepreneurship that can get lost over time.
  • Innovation can easily be downgraded as a priority as a company grows, looking to protect what already exists rather than generating new ideas and opportunities.
  • Creating a culture that encourages risk and operates like a start-up is a way to continue to have an entrepreneurial spirit within your organisation.
  • If you encourage employees to question existing ways of working then you will foster a culture focused around innovation.
  • Try and identify one area in your organisation that if transformed, will have a big impact on your results.

12 Jan 2023067: The Five Biggest Insights I Learned from Great Leaders00:22:43

You Can Achieve Your Success

But in order to do that, one of the best things that I can offer to you today is maybe sharing some reflection and observation that I had in the last couple of weeks during holidays. Based on all the conversation that actually I had in 2022 with all amazing guests that are invited on the show, I found interesting that most of them shared very similar approach to leadership, to success, to personal development.

For this episode of ‘The World Class Leaders Show’, one of the best things that I can do today as a starting, is share with you what I identified essentially five main similar patterns when I interviewed my guest and see whether they resonate with you, but most importantly, whether they might be important or helpful for you right now to unlock your potential and also making sure that you have some sort of guidelines or principles that you can use for 2023 to achieve the level of success that you certainly have in mind.

By listening to this podcast episode, you will learn more about:

(05:16) Lesson #1: Great leaders don't have regrets about their past.

(08:02 ) Lesson #2: They have been able to adapt and pivot many times during their career.

(11:20) Lesson #3:Success is proportionate to the quality and support received by their team.

(13:28) Lesson #4: Great leaders don't complain about circumstances around them.

(16:01) Lesson #5: Great leaders spent a lot of time understanding themselves.

Every Leader wants a high-performing, aligned organization.

Yet, in most companies, silos are everywhere—departments operate in isolation, teams protect their own priorities, and execution slows down.

Silos start in the mind before they show up in the business.

In this episode, we’re tackling one of the biggest barriers to execution and growth: silos.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated because your teams aren’t collaborating, your departments aren’t aligned, and information is stuck in one place, this episode is for you.

Leadership can feel exhilarating, fulfilling, and meaningful. But let’s be honest—it can also feel lonely. And most leaders don’t talk about it.

The higher you climb, the fewer people you can truly confide in. The weight of decisions, the pressure to appear strong, and the isolation that comes with being responsible for others can take a serious toll.

Today, we’re breaking that silence.

I’ll explore why leadership can feel isolating, how that loneliness affects decision-making, and—most importantly—how to surround yourself with the right people to break free from it.

‘My people aren’t stepping up, so I have to be more directive. But when I do, they feel disempowered, and then I have to take even more control.’

I hear it all the time.

It’s a frustrating cycle. You want your team to take initiative, solve problems, and think independently.

But when they don’t, you feel like you have no choice but to step in. And the more you step in, the less they take ownership.

So how do you break this pattern? How do you lead in a way that empowers your people while ensuring accountability?

In this episode, I’ll unpack why this cycle happens, the leadership traps that cause it, and—most importantly—how to build a team that takes real ownership without having to micromanage.

17 Oct 2024158: How Prioritizing Culture Helped One CEO Lead a Powerful Business Transformation with Lindsley Ruth00:51:01

In this episode of The World-Class Leader Show, Andrea Petrone sits down with Lindsey Ruth, an award-winning CEO who led a groundbreaking transformation at RS Group, pushing the company from the FTSE 250 to the FTSE 100 in record time. Known for his unique approach to leadership, Lindsey dives into the strategies that helped him turn a struggling business into an industry leader. But what exactly was his secret?

For CEOs and aspiring leaders, Lindsey's story offers a fresh perspective on navigating high-stakes challenges. He shares surprising insights about why traditional CEO roles are evolving and reveals what it really takes to build a team that drives massive growth. Why does he believe that culture, not performance metrics, is at the heart of success? And how did he rally his team to embrace continuous improvement, even in uncertain times?

This episode also explores a question many leaders face: how do you keep pushing boundaries when success is already within reach? Lindsey hints at the mindset and actions that kept him striving for more, never accepting the status quo. Could his approach to leadership inspire a new path forward in your own organization?

Additionally, Lindsey opens up about the often-overlooked toll of leadership on health and family life. As CEOs deal with intense pressure, how do they protect their personal well-being and relationships? Lindsey offers candid reflections on the sacrifices made and how he found ways to balance it all. For leaders feeling the strain, his insights could reveal a path to not just success, but a sustainable and fulfilling leadership journey.

Episode Highlights ⤵

  • Get out from behind your desk early on. Go meet frontline staff and ask for unfiltered perspectives on the business to inform your strategy.
  • Culture change must come from within, not top-down mandates. Help people see the why before dictating the what. Buy-in beats forced compliance.
  • Your staff are your top stakeholders. Tend to their wellbeing and engagement first so they can deliver for customers.
  • Loneliness comes with the CEO job. Have an executive coach you trust as a sounding board for advice and accountability.
  • Take smart risks when complexity abounds. Stay open to opportunities along with self-awareness to thrive.
  • Reflect regularly by journaling pivotal leadership lessons. Review for continuous improvement.
