04 Jul 2023EP. 296 Fish Nerds Podcast Takeover Part II with Cassie Hall from Truman Lake00:20:42

Welcome back to another exciting episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast! In this episode, the Crappie Hippie John King from the Fish Nerds Podcast delights us once again with another great conversation, this time with the wonderful Cassie Hall, a co-angler from Alabama, about her fishing experiences as a co-angler with the Lady Bass Anglers Association.
They delve into the world of co-angling, women's representation in fishing, and the vibrant fishing community of the LBAA that transcends boundaries. Cassie highlights her challenges, such as finding enough space to store all her fishing gear. With multiple bags and numerous fishing rods, she has become the subject of good-natured jokes from fellow anglers. Cassie humorously describes her truck, when filled with fishing supplies, resembling a well-stocked store. However, she admits that keeping the fishing rods organized and tangle-free is critical.
Cassie actively plays a leadership role in the LBAA, leading meetings with newcomers to the organization to discuss various topics, such as safety, sportsmanship, and personal health. She stresses the significance of being transparent about swimming ability to ensure everyone's well-being during fishing outings. Additionally, she shares her enthusiasm for introducing new members to tournament fishing with some who have never participated before. Cassie acknowledges her inexperience in tournament fishing but highlights the tremendous growth and sense of accomplishment one can achieve through this journey.
The conversation takes an inspiring turn as John shares the story of a young fishing prodigy named Rosie, who was previously featured on the Fish Nerds podcast. At just eight years old, Rosie represents a new generation of fishing enthusiasts and finds solace in an inclusive world that props her dreams and aspirations. Cassie reminisced about her childhood when women in fishing were underrepresented in media and magazines. However, she celebrates progress, with women now constituting 30% of the fishing community. This increased representation motivates young girls like Rosie to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
Thanks to Fish Nerds for this engaging collaboration featuring valuable insights into co-angling, women's representation in fishing, and the sense of community that binds anglers together.

03 Jan 2023EP. 270 Do It Scared With Fly Angler Stephanie Spell00:35:22

    Welcome to 2023!
My guest, on the first episode of the year, recently had a pivotal experience in her fly fishing career. She shares it with you, and it will impact and inspire you going into the new year to step out of your comfort zone and try some things you might feel anxious to do. Sometimes the most extraordinary experiences in our lives come out of those moments.
Meet Stephanie Spell, a native of upstate New York, longtime Naples, FL resident, and recently retired Chief of the Collier County Sheriff's Office! Stephanie has only been fly fishing for seven years, but she's all in, and I know you'll enjoy getting to meet her as we chat just outside the Lance Truck Camper Mobile Podcast Studio in Ft. Myers, FL.
    Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

  • 06 Apr 2021EP. 178 Hunting for Fish on the Fly and Glamping in the Great Smoky Mountains00:42:12
This week I'm happy to welcome another fly angler to the show, and one who is based in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, an area I haven't really featured much on the podcast. Charity Rutter is an owner, guide, instructor and graphic designer of R and R Fly Fishing based in East Tennessee. She's a native Oklahoman who picked up fly fishing after relocating to East Tennessee and meeting her future husband, fly angler Ian Rutter. She's been guiding for nearly 20 years now and together they've built a successful guide service offering wading trips (and if the conditions allow, drift boat trips). In addition to that Charity has gotten into hosting women's only events. One of which is a Glamping adventure happening this week as this episode is released. They also do an annual trip out west that you need to check out! We talk about all this on the episode as well as touch on some saltwater fishing, specifically tarpon, one of my bucket list fish and some bear stories! I know you're really going to enjoy this conversation with Charity Rutter!  Mentioned in this Episode: R and R Fly Fishing R and R Fly Fishing on Facebook R and R Fly Fishing on Instagram Women's World of Fishing Monday Night Takeover YouTube Channel Support our Sponsors! 16 Mar 2021EP. 175 Time to Sink or Swim! Meeting the Beyond Unsinkable Key West Boat00:20:11
If you've been following the show you've heard I'm changing up boats this year. Going with the Key West 230 Bay Reef to fish the Lady Bass Angler Association Tournaments, take Freedom Boat Club members out to fish, and more! While I absolutely loved my Qwest Pontoon, and will more than likely add a pontoon back into the mix down the road, I'm really excited about the opportunity to change things up and experience fishing from a center console. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Key West Headquarters located not in Key West, FL, but in Ridgeville, SC (which was a whole lot closer of a drive from Nashville, TN than it would have been to Key West!). It was amazing to see how these unsinkable boats are constructed. At the end of the tour, we met our very own 230 Bay Reef and she is a beauty!  From there we took her out on a local pond for a test run and got to see what she can do with that Yamaha 250 VMAX SHO pairing. Let me tell you, it takes off like a dream! I cannot wait for the rigging to get finished up at The Boat Locker in Nashville and to get her back out on the water! From there, I went back to the brand new Key West offices and sat down with Mike and Tom Marlowe to talk a little bit about Key West Boats, the 230 Bay Reef, and more. Side note: Follow Mike Marlowe as he embarks on the 2021 Skiff Challenge supporting Captains for Clean Water. This year, five boat companies will put their 18-foot skiffs and best teams to the ultimate endurance test, circumnavigating the 1,300 mile Florida peninsula in nearshore waters from state line to state line. • 24 Aug 2021EP. 198 The Ultimate App Every Bass Angler Needs to Have00:18:31

The truth is, if you're a bass angler, you probably already have this app on your phone, and if you don't, well, you'll definitely be downloading it after listening to this episode.

BassForecast is a game-changer on many levels. On this week's episode, you're going to meet one of the creators of the app and find out the story behind it! Meet Mike Mehlmann.

I first learned about it from previous podcast guest, Brittany Howard. Since then, I took advantage of the $10 Tackle Warehouse savings, which paid for my 1st year's subscription and have used it in a variety of different ways from planning which day I was going to set aside some time to go fishing, to which locations, baits and presentations I was going to focus on.

This app is a great tool for anyone from the beginning angler on up to the pro level. You can follow the guidelines, or throw caution to the wind and do something completely different, the choice is yours.

Learn more about the app and how it came about on this week's episode of the podcast!

We're quickly closing in on Episode 200! Thanks for coming along for the ride!!!

30 May 2023EP. 291 Girls Gone Fishin': The Rise of Female Anglers in Competitive Fishing00:25:21

In the latest episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer, we got to hear first-hand how high school fishing is helping young girls build confidence, learn valuable skills, and make memories they'll never forget.
Here are three key takeaways from the episode:
    - Fishing helps kids develop essential skills like responsibility and teamwork: Tennessee Bass Nation is the largest high school fishing organization in the US, and kids as young as second grade can get involved. The program teaches them everything they need to know about fishing, and they're responsible for taking care of their equipment and preparing for tournaments.
    - Success on the water translates to success in life: Hear directly from some local high school fishing young ladies about how fishing helped them develop confidence and strength as young girls. Many of the girls can load and back the boat better than grown men, and they're proving that they can hold their own in a traditionally male-dominated sport.
    - Fishing can be mentally and physically demanding: One of the young anglers in the episode described waking up as early as 2:30 am to prepare for fishing trips, and some tournament days can last for 14-16 hours or more. But despite the long days and challenging conditions, these girls are proving that they're up to the challenge – and they're having a blast while they do it.

02 Aug 2022EP. 248 Living the Passion, Supporting Women Anglers, and Beyond: Meet Rob Zorn from iBass36000:19:25

"Live the Passion" and "Network. Eat. Sleep. Repeat." are two mantras of iBass360, an organization dedicated to promoting the sport of bass fishing all the way from the everyday amateur angler on up to the seasoned pro.

What drew me to iBass360 was its relentless support for female anglers. I kept seeing their posts pop up on my social media feed time and time again, most if not all of them craftily written by their Social Media Director Eric Evans. Finally, I couldn't help myself and I had to dig in to find out more about who they were.

That's when I learned the story behind the founder of iBass360, Rob Zorn, and his purpose behind starting the brand which has evolved into an entire nation of passionate anglers all with a unique purpose to make a positive difference in the world, whichever avenue it might be.

We are all very lucky to have a strong organization like iBass360 standing behind us to help support us and get the word out there for our causes to better the world.

I'm honored to introduce you to the founder Rob Zorn on this week's episode of the Woman Angler & Adventurer, his powerful story which led him to start this mission, and more!

This is my 2nd in a series of interviews held at the 2022 iCast Convention down in Orlando, FL. I recorded these with my Zoom H6 in the hopes that it would make you feel like you are right there with us on the convention floor at the Waypoint TV space which is where were sitting.

Welcome to the 2nd installment of our short "Revisited Series" centered around Women in Hunting. This week we're bringing you a blast from the past from back on Episode 35! Avid bowhunter April Dawn Willis was my special guest, and she talked about some great health and fitness tips to perform your best out in the field! I think the majority of us can use a little help in that area, it's a timeless topic that I thought deserves to be put back into the spotlight.

Here are the original show notes:

Here we are, November 27th...and suddenly we're in the thick of hunting season AND the holidays. Having just come off Thanksgiving Day in the United States, if you’re anything like me, you may have indulged in some overeating. Most people only have to contend with one Thanksgiving feast, but I had THREE (two of which were on the same day). And the scale isn’t my friend.
That being said, I thought, what better topic to get us back on track than this one? On today’s episode, I am joined by April Willis, Athletic Therapist and founder of Huntress Health.
April shares with us her 7 best tips to increase your hunting performance, and some of them just might surprise you!

19 Nov 2019EP. 87 Stranded on Jewel Key: Everglades Fishing Adventure with Katie Puterbaugh from Alaska00:37:27
Picture this. It's a sweltering hot, windy day in the Everglades. You're covered head to toe in UV protective clothing to avoid getting sunburned on top of the sunburn you already have from the fishing outing a couple of days earlier (lesson learned the hard way!). You're fishing the flats with a super experienced captain and guide and you're paired up with an airforce vet who traveled all the way down from Alaska to be a part of this amazing adventure. The fishing's been hard due to the windy conditions and the partly cloudy skies. It's finally time to break for lunch. Then...the unthinkable happens... You'll have to listen to this week's episode to get "the rest of the story!" This week you'll meet Katie Puterbaugh. She's a die-hard fly angler, a Florida native but a retired airforce veteran that's made her home in Alaska for the past 25 years with her husband, also a retired airforce vet. He works at a local fishing shop and is a scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout troop, which affords Katie a lot of free time. What else do you do with free time in Alaska? You fish of course!  And fish she does... I was interested to learn about Katie as we were traveling down from Nashville, TN to Homosassa, FL on Rip and Hopper's Redfish Roadie Roadtrip. A quick Google search in-between posting Instagram Stories covering the first day of our journey revealed some intriguing articles. I thought, wow, this is a seriously fishy lady! One was titled, "Super fly fisherwoman catches 1,000 pounds of salmon." Another article I came across was an article written on the Project Healing Waters website about fishing with Katie in the Florida Keys. I knew I was going to have an upstanding roommate and fishing partner on a good portion of this trip. I couldn't wait to meet and chat with her.  I definitely wasn't disappointed. To top it all off, Katie has a great sense of humor too. Jen, Heather and I enjoyed making good-hearted fun of the fact that she's very tall and skinny as a stick but as Katie herself jokes, she doesn't have just one sweet tooth but a whole mouth full of them! We caught her rummaging through the gas stations for powdered mini donuts on multiple occasions.  You too are really going to enjoy meeting Katie through our conversation on the podcast episode as we make the drive back to Marco Island from the Everglades...just happy to be alive!        Additional Resources: Shallow Sightings Fly Fishing in Homosassa (Kyle Staton) Captain John Hand Project Healing Waters Fish with a Hero Alaska Star Article on Katie Puterbaugh Project Healing Waters Article on Katie Puterbaugh Rip and Hopper's Adventure on Instagram Rip and Hopper's Adventure on Facebook DUN Magazine United Women on the Fly The Woman Angler & Adventurer Facebook Page The Woman Angler & Adventurer Facebook Group The Woman Angler & Adventurer on Instagram Listen on Apple Podcasts (subscribe and leave a review!) 10 Aug 2021EP. 196 The Best Fishing Rods on Earth? Conversation with Savannah Stenlund from St. Croix Rods00:25:01

I recently had the opportunity to do a tour of the St. Croix Rods headquarters in Park Falls, WI. I have to say, if you're into fishing and you ever have the opportunity to do this free tour, I highly recommend you do it! The manufacturing process of a fishing rod is unbelievable. At St. Croix, they even make their own blanks, and to able to witness that process alone is phenomenal.

Before that, I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Savannah Stenlund, the new Angler Engagement Coordinator with the company. I can't wait for you all to have the chance to meet her as well on this week's episode!

You'll hear all about her story, how she got into fishing and the outdoors, how she landed her dream job in the fishing industry. You'll also get to hear about some of the great new products St. Croix has recently released. From 1st hand experience, you'll definitely want to hear about the new Victory line-up as well as some really exciting other new products.

As always, I hope you enjoy!

18 Feb 2020EP. 112 National Wild Turkey Federation Convention + Kristine Fischer's Epic Day of Bass Fishing00:28:14
The 44th Annual National Wild Turkey Federation Convention and Sport Show is a wrap! Conveniently located in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, I was on hand to take it all in and meet up with a few awesome ladies.  On this week's episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast I chat with NWTF Spokesperson and "The First Lady of Hunting," Brenda Valentine to talk about the 2020 show. I sat in on the "Connecting Women to Hunting" panel hosted by Brenda. She was accompanied by a diverse panel of insightful women in the hunting industry. You can be a fly on the wall as I share a couple of segments from that discussion.  Then, I had the chance to catch up with Kristine Fischer who stopped by Nashville to meet up with a few of her friends who were also in town for NWTF. The timing couldn't have been better because Kristine was just coming off the most epic day of bass fishing she's ever had. You'll hear all about it! Finally, I also had the chance to catch up with Amy Ray from The Sisterhood of the Outdoors. She was excited to show off their new line of ladies turkey hunting apparel at the sport show and it sounds like it was a huge hit!  Amy took a minute to showcase the pant and we shot a video so you could see for yourself. As you can see, a lot of thought went into the development of this line! We hope you enjoy this episode! 20 Jul 2021EP. 193 What Happens In Put-in-Bay Stays In Put-in-Bay...or Not! We Tell All in This Episode Taking About Smallmouth and Walleye Fishing on Lake Erie with Mark1 Sportfishing00:08:29
We had such a fantastic time fishing with Captain Mark Cahlik with Mark1 Sportfishing and Bays Edge Resort up on Lake Erie out of Port Clinton, OH a few weeks ago that he invited us back up to have a go at smallmouth bass this time around. What a treat that was! These smallmouth on Lake Erie are no joke. We caught a bunch of chunks that meant business and we had an absolute ball! The same crew got back together- Brittany Howard, Tiffany Minton, myself, and Dana Scott. We all caught a bunch of fish- and not just smallmouth, we landed multiple species including Smallmouth, Walleye, Sheepshead, Perch and Catfish. The majority of the catches however were Smallmouth and Walleye. Captain Mark definitely put us on 'em! Find out how in this episode as we tell all, despite the cliches about Put-in-Bay! Enjoy and stay tuned for some amazing episodes from iCast coming up as that's where I'll be spending my time this week as you're listening to this episode. They appropriately titled the episode "On a Pontoon."  This week the Woman Angler and Adventurer, Angie Scott, invites us aboard her new Qwest pontoon. 24 Oct 2023EP. 312 Legendary Voice of Bass Fishing: An Inside Look with Don Day00:23:09

Welcome to another exciting episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast. In today's episode, we have a special guest who has been a legendary voice in the world of bass fishing. Our longtime announcer and the voice of the LBAA, Don Day, has decided to retire. While we'll miss him, we're excited to have him on the show to share his incredible stories and his unwavering support for women in fishing.

Don Day has had a remarkable career in the industry, starting from his early days in South Georgia, where he spent countless hours fishing and hunting with his dad. Even during his time in the navy, he never lost his love for the outdoors. His broadcasting career began, and he eventually crossed paths with the founder of B.A.S.S., Ray Scott. They became friends, and Don had the opportunity to work with B.A.S.S., which marked the beginning of his relationship with the organization.

One of the most memorable experiences in Don's career was a trip to Iraq with Ray Scott in 2004. The purpose of the trip was to thank the men and women in uniform and support them with fishing gear and other supplies. Don describes the emotional time he spent with the troops, reflecting on the impact they had on him and Ray Scott. It's clear that these experiences have shaped Don's perspective on life and the value of the outdoors industry.

Don also shares his journey as an emcee, particularly with the women's bass fishing tours. He had the opportunity to work with the WBT (Women's Bass Tour) and eventually became involved with the LBAA (Ladies Bass Angler Association). Don's passion for supporting women in fishing shines through as he talks about the anglers he's met and the growth he's witnessed in their careers.

As we wrap up another successful LBAA season, we reflect on the ups and downs of fishing and how even the greatest anglers can have their challenging days. Don reminds us that it's not just about the fish but also the behind-the-scenes details that make each angler unique.

Join us for this captivating episode as Don Day shares his extraordinary stories, insights, and unwavering support for women in fishing. You won't want to miss it!

    - Angie and Teri emphasize the importance of fish conservation, especially for deep-water fishing.

    - They discuss the fizzing process and its role in ensuring the survival of fish caught at depth.

Viral sensation Captain Michelle Bancewicz is captaining the first all-female team with her First Mate, Lea Pinaud, on the F/V "No Limits."

Michelle went viral on social media after landing an 800lb (dressed weight of 601) bluefin tuna solo, which has inspired many and caught the attention of the show's producers.

    About Wicked Tuna

Filmed on location in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and the surrounding waters, Wicked Tuna follows a group of salty fishermen from the nation’s oldest seaport as they make their living the way it’s been done for centuries — rod and reel fishing, one catch at a time — all in pursuit of the bluefin tuna. The series gives viewers an in-depth look at the intense battles, fierce competition, crushing losses and major paydays of the country’s toughest captains. For commercial fishermen, the directive is simple: Catch a fish or go home without a paycheck.
