20 Jul 2022WOT 101: Streamer Tactics and Efficient Decision Making on the River with Domenick Swentosky01:37:23

In this episode we Wadeoutthere with Domenick Swentosky from central Pennsylvania.  Domenick is a fly fishing guide and the creator of Troutbitten.

What is Troutbitten?  Well, it's a website, with over 800 articles dedicated to helping folks enjoy time on the river and catch more trout.  But it's also a podcast, where Domenick and his friends discuss ideas on various fly fishing tactics and philosophies while sharing memories and a laugh.  Then again, it's also part YouTube Channel, with beautiful, high quality videography that shows people the howtos of various fly fishing tips and tricks with candor and logic.  The truth is Troutbitten is all those things.

Perhaps the simplest answer is Troutbitten is a place for people who love fly fishing for trout.  People like those at Wadeoutthere.  Maybe that’s why I’m so excited to talk with Domenick as the first ever repeat guest on the Wadeoutthere Podcast.  We discuss fly fishing with kids, streamers, and making changes on the river.

Domenick's articles at Troutbitten are an incredible resource.  If you want to read more about the tactics that Domenick believes in, or schedule a guided trip, visit:

07 Jun 2023WOT 147: Phil Rowley Part 1. Turning Pro and the Lakes of Alberta00:46:03

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Phil Rowley from Sherwood Park, Alberta.  Phil tried his hand at fly fishing on the Skagit River in British Columbia, after a vacation to Vancouver Island left him short on fish and curious if a fly rod might produce better results.

Over time, Phil transformed his love of fly fishing into a career through persistent tying and teaching.  As he began to fall more and more in love with stillwater fishing, his schools and tying classes also began to focus more on the tactics and techniques involved in fishing the many productive lakes in British Columbia’s interior.

Today, Phil is a guide, author, and educator specializing in fly fishing stillwater.

In Part One of our conversation we discuss Phil’s gradual process of becoming a professional fly fisher and writer, as well as fly fishing the lakes of Alberta.

21 Jun 2023WOT 149: Fly Fishing with Teenagers, Motion Equals Emotion, and the Boise River with Kimberly Cordero01:24:42

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Kimberly Cordero from Boise, Idaho.

Kim’s fascination with fly fishing began while growing up watching her stepfather tie flies and grew as she began tying flies herself during the long, cold winters she experienced while living in South Dakota working for the Department of Juvenile Corrections.

Today, Kim is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a background of over fourteen years as a child protection social worker and supervisor.  When Kim started her own practice she missed being a part of a team and felt “lost without a sense of community.”  She found that community by combining her passion for helping youth, love of fly fishing, and professional experience volunteering with the MayFly Project and starting its Boise chapter.

We discuss fly fishing with teenagers, some of the psychological connections of how “motion equals emotion” with respect to fly fishing, and the Boise River.

*Sidenote. At one point in our conversation Kim mentions the term “placement theory.” She would like to correct that term as “place attachment theory.”

05 Jul 2023WOT 151: Don't Judge a Book By It's Cover and Fishing Your Fly with Andrew Grillos01:00:13
In this episode we WadeOutThere with Andrew Grillos from Gunnison Colorado.  Andrew learned to fly fish side by side with his father growing up in Colorado, learned to tie as a teenager, and eventually ended up guiding on the Gunnison River.

Andrew went on to guide in Colorado, Alaska, Chile, New Zealand, and Washington, and I might be missing a few in there.  He is also a signature tyer for Umpqua.

We discuss some of the more interesting and surprising clients Andrew has guided over the years, using visualization to help fish your flies more effectively, the Skagit River system in Western Washington, and how working with bamboo helped Andrew reconnect with fly fishing after a stroke left him struggling to get back to the sport he loves.

12 Jul 2023WOT 152: Progress Through Mistakes and Summer Steelhead on the Deschutes River with Dave Stewart01:11:41

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Dave Stewart from Oregon.  Dave started fly fishing at an early age.  His father, who was a guide, and one of the earliest fly fishermen on the Deschutes River, would often leave him alone to fish and explore on the river for two to three days in between guide trips.

Dave’s love of the outdoors and fly fishing led him to start The Wet Fly Swing Podcast, which initially focussed on steelhead, but eventually branched out to all things fly fishing.  The show now has over 470 full length episodes where Dave talks with some of the most knowledgeable, experienced, and just plain fun humans in the fly fishing community.

The Wet Fly Swing Podcast was one of the first shows I discovered when I began my own journey into podcasting, and became a standard I aspired to emulate.  It’s been an honor to have been a guest on Dave’s show, and now to share our conversation on the WadeOutThere Podcast.

We discuss Dave’s relationship with his father and how it influenced the beginning of the WFS podcast, swinging wet flies for summer steelhead on the Deschutes, and why Dave believes “those who fail most, win.”

19 Jul 2023WOT 153: Lessons from a Salt Water Metal Artist and Tarpon Fiend with Ashley Weber01:05:10

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Ashley Weber from Florida’s East Coast.  Ashley grew up fishing in the Indian River Lagoon system along the “space coast” of Florida where she developed a deep connection with the ocean and salt water fish.

When Ashley attended art school she told her professors she wanted to paint fish and stay in Florida.  She started transitioning from painting to metal art her senior year when she decided she wanted to create a metal tarpon for herself, after tarpon brought her to fly fishing.  She quickly fell in love with the metal art medium, and it wasn’t long after school that her art became her full time work, and was paying for her many saltwater fly fishing adventures.

We discuss Ashley’s pursuit of metal art from beginner to accomplished artist, conservation efforts in the Indian River Lagoon System, and some of the lessons Ashley has learned following her dreams in art and saltwater fly fishing.

26 Jul 2023WOT 154: A Scientific Approach to Trout Environment and Presentation with Jason Randall01:31:05

In this Episode we WadeOutThere with Jason Randall from Viroqua, Wisconsin.  Jason grew up learning to fish from his father.   After serving in the army and attending college as a biology major, he worked briefly in the hatchery and fishery business, which helped influence the scientific approach he takes to fly fishing and trout.

Jason credits the generosity of his many fly fishing mentors with helping him learn and progress over the years, and is the reason he values the educational aspect of the sport so much today.  Jason has been a teacher in fly fishing for decades, has written several fly fishing books, and was the trout feature writer for American Angler Magazine.

We discuss Jason’s scientific approach to fly fishing, the specific adjustments he makes based on water temperature, sky cover, sun angles, and water clarity.  As well as presentation techniques for accomplishing what Jason describes as “the three goals of nymphing.”

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Archy Archembault from White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.  Archy started tying trout flies as a youth in his Florida garage before he had ever seen a real trout.  He began fly fishing for saltwater fish and bass in his local waters until he fell in love with the mountains and rivers of West Virginia on a whitewater rafting trip with friends.

After separating from the Marine Corps, Archy moved to West Virginia to pursue a job as a whitewater raft guide, but when the lodge needed fishing guides, he quickly volunteered and set out to learn the rapids and the fishery, putting clients on fish while navigating whitewater.  Today Archy is the head guide for The Greenbrier Resort Hotel in the heart of some of West Virginia’s best fly fishing.

We discuss introducing newcomers to fly fishing in West Virginia, why Archy loves getting to places that are hard to get to when chasing fish, as well as reading water and presentation techniques for fishing whitewater from a raft.

30 Aug 2023WOT 159: Teaching, Learning, and the Richness of Trout Streams with Tom Rosenbauer01:40:56

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Tom Rosenbauer, from Manchester Vermont.  Tom has been fly fishing and tying for nearly all his life.  After college he got a job as a retail clerk at Orvis when it was still a small but growing business in Vermont.  Slowly, but surely, Tom’s emphasis on teaching and education helped develop him into a leader and educator at both Orvis and within the fly fishing community.

Tom is the author of over twenty fly fishing books, has created too many educational articles and videos to count, and is the host of the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast, with over 12 million downloads.  His efforts have helped untold numbers of anglers on the water, myself included.  Besides the great personal gratitude I have for the resources Tom has put out into the world, perhaps what is most impressive to me is his persistent pursuit of learning and effortless humility.

We discuss what excites Tom about fly fishing these days, his thoughts on the creative process of writing, and exploring the richness of different trout streams.  Tom also shares his ideas on spot burning, catch and release, conservation, and overcrowding.

After fishing the White River system in college, Mac moved to North Carolina in 1986 and has been guiding there ever since.  Mac is a fly fishing and casting instructor and is the author of “Casting Angles.”

We discuss how the 80/20 principle applies to fly fishing’s core practices, the basics of loop control, North Carolina, and the pitfalls of putting the goal before the process.

08 Nov 2023WOT 169: Fly Tying, Pennsylvania Trout, and Confidence Through Observation with Jim Misiura01:21:50

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Jim Misiura from North Eastern Pennsylvania.  Jim’s journey into fly fishing began with catching trout in his beloved hometown stream with a plastic cricket from the toy box, a size 6 hook, and an old fly rod he bought from a friend.  Since that day Jim has been tying and fly fishing on that Pennsylvania trout stream for over fifty years.

He originally began tying out of necessity as a youth in need of flies, but when his sister asked him to teach the children in her class about fly tying, Jim found a new passion in the sport, teaching.  Jim started his YouTube Channel in 2010 to help others learn to tie flies and be the mentor he never had starting out.

We discuss fly tying and trout fishing in Pennsylvania, the importance of considering the styles of flies we tie and fish, and building confidence in fly tying through observation.

06 Dec 2023WOT 173: Why Making it Easy Works in Fly Fishing and Music with Chris Coole01:13:53

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Chris Coole from Toronto, Ontario.  Chris grew up fishing with his uncle for walleye, bass, and musky as a child until the mystique of fly fishing captured his imagination.  About the same time Chris got his hands on a fly rod, he picked up a banjo.  That was over thirty years ago, and they’ve been part of his life ever since.

Chris’s love of fly fishing makes its way into many of the songs and tunes he writes in the forms of places and feelings.  His work has given him the opportunity to travel the world as a professional musician, who always seems to find a way to wet a line on the road.  Chris is both a solo artist and a member of “The Lonesome Ace Stringband.”

We discuss the value of keeping things simple in music and fly fishing in pursuit of falling into the flow, and the traditions and variations that have been passed down in both fiddle tunes and fly fishing.

Please listen to the end, as Chris treats us to a performance of one of his banjo tunes that was inspired by fly fishing.
