Congas, seeking out knowledge, and the Weezer fan club. Caitlyn Moss (The Altons, El Domingo, Nick Pagan) "Caitlin Moss is a drummer, percussionist, music educator born and raised in Los Angeles. Her style is rooted in jazz, funk, hip hop, classical, West African, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, 90’s grunge rock, electronic and experimental music. Some of her earliest influences were Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Dannie Richmond, Bernard Purdie, and David Garibaldi. She currently performs with several bands in Los Angeles, in the genres of Latin, world, soul, and jazz music. She is also a music instructor for the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Her style of playing is notable for its strong groove, consistent sound, and versatility among genres; Wil-Dog, bassist of Ozomatli, has said she reminds him of the legendary James Gadson." 12 Jan 2024Episode 173: Johnny Payne01:10:51
A get in get out kind of thing, like minded people from elsewhere, and being somewhat of an elder statesman. Johnny Payne "Do you remember rock and roll radio? The harmonies, the hooks, the choruses? Johnny Payne does. Or more specifically, he remembers that beautifully fucked up arc of let’s say ’70 to ’76, that time when the impossibly bright lights of an entire generation’s youthful idealism gave way to the muted amber glow of adult burn-out. You might know Johnny Payne as co-frontman of shaggy-pop auteurs The Shilohs. You might even know their three largely unheard albums of impeccably rendered pop rock. But this is something else. Where The Shilohs are a working rock band in the classic sense (remember when there were working rock bands?) Payne has ditched the band to strike out on his own as a bona fide solo singer-songwriter and the result is the almost self-titled EP Johnny. Craving an escape from the endless parade of yoga mats and craft beer culture that defines his native Vancouver, Payne accepted the invitation of Pat Riley and Alaina Moore (of indie heavyweights Tennis) to record in their home studio in Denver, Colorado. Working closely with Riley and Moore, trading instruments and ideas, and with Beach House drummer James Barone in tow, Payne came out the other side with the solo EP Johnny. These five songs find Payne pushing his craft into full on adult-contemporary mode, channeling the visionary spirit of Harry Nilsson, Laura Nyro, even Carole King. Remember a time when even a weirdo like Todd Rundgren could score a soft rock top hit? Johnny Payne does. On Johnny the vibe is all chipped champagne glasses and smeared bathroom mirrors, all the busted stuff that collects in the wake of one’s life. Standing alone at the microphone, Payne shows himself for who he is on these songs – a grown man having to let go of the past. There are tears of regret, tears of joy. There are red roses, blue oceans, and slow golden mornings spent staring out the window as the world drifts by. So light a smoke, have another sip, and enjoy the good times while they last – here comes Johnny." 14 Jul 2023Episode 147: Scott Montoya #3 (Soft Palms)01:06:00
Vintage equals broken, different flavors, and playing pre-noon shows. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms, Happy Sundays, Studios For Studios) Studios For Schools: https://www.ebay.com/usr/sstudiosforschoolss "Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career.” Excerpt from https://www.softpalmsmusic.com/about/ Soft Palms: Bandcamp: https://softpalms.bandcamp.com/album/soft-palms Instagram: @softpalmsmusic Website: https://www.softpalmsmusic.com Records: https://everloving.com/products/soft-palms-lp Merch: https://softpalms.bandcamp.com/merch Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/softpalmsmusic Happy Sundays: Instagram: @happysundaysfest Website: https://happysundaysfest.com Studios For Schools: Instagram: @studiosforschools Website: https://studiosforschools.org The Mouth TV: Instagram: @themouth.tv Website: https://themouth.tv Coma Studio: Instagram: @coma_studio The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Tinkering in the late hours, changing what you’re doing on a subconscious level, and Red Bull. Charles Prest (Noon Garden, Flamingods) "Noon Garden is an exotic psych-pop odyssey, drawing on worldly sounds from the likes of Francis Bebey and Dur Dur Band to Shintaro Sakamoto, tearing up the sonic rule book and conjuring up a distant land where you find yourself cutting loose to grooves that meander their way through a wide spectrum of African Disco, Funk, Exotica and Psychedelia." 08 Nov 2024Episode 215 : Kelly Finnigan #2 (Monophonics)01:14:06
Stopping to smell the concrete, an injection of inspiration fuel into the tank, and creating different stews. Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan’s, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover’s eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There’s nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that’s my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it’s not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I’ve worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan’s take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain’t Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That’s Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan’s calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan’s sound." Making out at shows, finishing a research paper in Japan, and scooping coffee beans into a bag. Noah Kohll (Color Green, Surf Curse) "Color Green is an American cosmic rock and roll duo made up of Noah Kohll and Corey Madden . The fleet-fingered guitar gurus formed the group in 2018 after jamming their way through a lengthy modal excursion into a particularly kaleidoscopic stretch of the astral plane. Their debut, self-titled EP arrives in 2020 on Maximum Exposure after two long, strange years spent recording and performing in strange, mysterious spots of the Californian desert and worshipping nightly at the altar of Jerry Garcia." 10 Mar 2023Episode 129: John Andrews #2 (John Andrews & The Yawns)01:27:03
Exposing holes in the wall, a perfectly timed shush, and playing at a laundromat. John Andrews (John Andrews and the Yawns, Woods, Quilt) John Andrews & The Yawns - Checks In The Mail (Official Music Video)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiyuyUp6exc "John Andrews is something of an open secret in a certain corner of the music scene: a versatile musician & animator. A film school drop out whose work hat-tips tradition as much as outsider anti-aesthetics. He's spent over a decade on the DIY circuit, playing early house shows alongside then up-and-coming peers Weyes Blood and Daniel Bachman. Today he is still out there projecting his sketchy hand drawn animations during his performances in coffee shops, small galleries and non-traditional venues. Andrews' painterly approach now introduces us to his version of New York City, the place he was bound to end up after years of dwelling in Pennsylvania farm towns and New Hampshire barns. There is handmade vibrancy to the world he's imagined for us here: intimate moments seen from the interior, looking outward from hole-in-the-wall restaurants, theaters and the fragments of peace found within the restless and dirty street corners. "Love For The Underdog", his aptly titled fourth release with the Woodsist label, was tracked live to tape in various studios and apartments across the Empire State with help from his bandmates in Cut Worms' touring outfit, Max Clarke, Keven Lareau & Noah Bond. Buoyant melodies are supported by timeless string arrangements, translated from Andrews' head to page with the help of friend Simon Hanes. The string quartet follows the tradition of Francoise Hardy, Harry Nilsson, Margo Guryan & Belle and Sebastian, giving the whole thing a cinematic ambience with stark shadows of an Edward Hopper painting. The lyrics tie together narratives of cynical heroes & troubled lovers. Put on the record and sink into well-worn red velvet theater seats, when the lights go down and the flickering of projectors run the title: Love for the Underdog, indeed." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 16: Jack Name00:49:47
Episode sixteen of The Vineyard Podcast W/ Jack Name (Jack Name, White Fence) "In a time rife with alienation, Magic Touch, the third album by the ubiquitous and mysterious Jack Name, offers the comfort of contact. With a body of work that ranges from the catchy to the cacophonous, Name has earned the reputation of a musician who’s difficult to define. For over a decade, he’s been a fixture in the Los Angeles underground. His songs have appeared on albums by U.S. Girls (Heavy Light, 2020) and White Fence (Family Perfume, 2012); he’s produced recordings for Cass McCombs; and his experimental music has been performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Magic Touch reveals yet another side of Jack Name. While it’s every bit as intricate as his previous releases, 2014’s Light Show and 2015’s Weird Moons, here he’s done away with the dense production of his earlier work to make a record that feels stark, personal, and effortlessly natural." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 32: Max Kuehn (FIDLAR)00:51:26
Brothers, drinking while watching Dane Cook's fantastic catalog of movies, and the difference between touring in a van and a touring on a bus. Max Kuehn (Max Kuehn, FIDLAR) "Sure, life’s a risk. But FIDLAR have proven that risks are worth taking. Starting out as a group of drunken punks playing gnarly house shows around Los Angeles, their fanbase exploded and congealed into “FIDIOTS”. Fan’s who show their dedication to both the band and their mantra of “fuck it” by etching “FIDLAR” onto their bodies by way of homemade stick-and-poke prison style tattoos." 22 Nov 2024Episode 216 : Danny Bengston #2 (Together Pangea)01:06:06
Looking up and out during performances, recording after business hours, and the $80 a month Strava membership. Danny Bengston (Together Pangea) "Since they began jamming back in William’s Santa Clarita bedroom, Los Angeles indie band Together Pangea have continually challenged themselves with each subsequent offering. Jelly Jam [2010] poured the gasoline, Living Dummy [2011] struck the match, and Badillac [2014] lit the fire with its revved-up nineties rock-inspired flames. Along the way, fan favorites like “Sick Shit,” “Badillac,” and “Offer” would rack up millions of Spotify streams, while the group received support from Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork, MTV, Stereogum, and more. Following the 2015 release of The Phage EP, produced by The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, these working class boys embarked on the journey to what would become 2017’s Bulls and Roosters, which evidenced their growth as a tried-and-true rock band with just the right amount of “brattiness,” as they like to say. Together Pangea—William Keegan, Danny Bengston, and Erik Jimenez—return in 2021 having made the most of 2020’s turbulence by writing and recording DYE, an upbeat, undeniable collection of hooks, anthems, and power-pop garage-rock catchiness that is unmistakably the album of their career.DYE is an amalgam of the band’s last three records: the inward looking and self-pleasing experimentation of 2017’s Bulls and Roosters, the frantic and scream-y Badillac with its inspiration from emotionally raw grunge, and the 50’s pop heavy 2011 album Living Dummy. After more than a decade as Together Pangea, the band know how their bread is buttered and made an effort to focus on what they know they do best." Bryan Torres (Death Lens) "Death Lens are an alternative/punk band from Los Angeles, CA who have become a staple of the DIY scene in LA. 16 Jun 2023Episode 143: Victor Benavides (Los Yesterdays)01:13:27
Providing an emotional reaction, going dark every now and again, and habitual line steppers. Victor Benavides (Los Yesterdays) Los Yesterdays "Who Made You You?" OFFICIAL VIDEO- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TJJz8klYoE Los Yesterdays "Nobody's Clown" (Official Video)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvJTEct-gUw Los Yesterdays "Time"- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7rGlg2ps2E “Los Yesterdays originated in an Altadena garage when Gabriel Rowland teamed up with his old friend Victor Benavides. Rowland, a long time drummer and eccentric creator of multitudinous soulful things, took charge of recording as well as playing all the instruments, while Benavides wrote and cut vocals. The project pretty much stayed in their garage for a few years until a mutual connection brought them to the attention of Tom Brenneck and Gabe Roth, who both dug the songs and offered to join in on guitar and bass respectively so that the duo might be able to perform their music live. The four soon found a handful of gigs behind them and a Penrose recording date in front of them. The latter from which sprang the celestial reverie of “Tell Me I’m Dreaming,” a full-throated pop-souldie complete with orchestral percussion and co-ed chorus, as well as “Time,” a dark psychedelic meditation with a rawness that betrays the garage in which it was conceived. Though the production rings with the high-ceilinged echoes of the Penrose studio, the songs retain in whole the idiosyncratic architecture that could only have been hatched by two mad geniuses in a garage." 08 Dec 2023Episode 168: David Ruiz (SadGirl, The Paranoyds)01:04:07
The camera work of Malcolm & The Middle, email protocol, and walking in to see what’s up for a bit. David Ruiz (SadGirl, The Paranoyds) "The Paranoyds have the kind of connection people only dream of: as non-biological sisters who have known each other longer than they haven't and speak a language that no one else can understand. With a bond that began in preschool, Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) and Lexi Funston (guitar/vocals) were always inseparable, so when they met Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) in ninth grade, it felt like they had known her all along. After all, they were a “package deal.” In high school, they began making music together in a friend’s laundry room and their relationship just blossomed from there. When it came time to add in a drummer, David Ruiz, who joined the band in 2015, fit in like he had been there all along. It's that special bond that has solidified their relationship as bandmates who connect seamlessly to one another’s energy on stage—and best friends. And it's the one thing that has remained a constant throughout the past two years." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 2: Brendan Sepe (Semi Trucks, The Pesos)00:38:09
The second episode of The Vineyard with Brendan Sepe (Semi Trucks, The Pesos) "Semi Trucks, created, fronted, and curated by California bred Brendan Sepe, are a “magic school bus”-esque escapade on track to bring art pop to the top of the charts. The duality of Sepe’s teenage-esque, yet cosmopolitan song writing charms to the point of blushing all listeners—with me being no exception. You may know Sepe from his prior engagement to the band the Pesos. This led him to get his foot in the door in the dank, dark music scene of Los Angeles. Los Angeles, where dreams are chewed up and spit out. Fortunately, Sepe has no dreams. He tells me all he truly wants is to be heard by kids twenty years from now in hopes to inspire them. He’s a man of the future. Laying tile by day, and laying tile by the next morning, Sepe aches to create and has done so immensely with his debut “vs California.”The Semi Trucks are like eating your favorite American meal laced with sincerity, struggles, love, freedom and euphoria. 06 Oct 2023Episode 159: Lucas Harwood (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Heavy Moss)01:16:20
90 minute sets, a word to mouth ground swell, and hard curfews. Lucas Harwood (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Heavy Moss) “Formed in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia, by a group of friends who jammed frequently, then decided on a whim to play a show, the lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Stu Mackenzie, harmonica player/singer Ambrose Kenny-Smith, guitarists Cook Craig and Joey Walker, bassist Lucas Skinner, and dual drummers Michael Cavanagh and Eric Moore. They released two garage rock-inspired EPs in 2011, Anglesea and Willoughby's Beach, then in 2012 released their debut album, 12 Bar Bruise. Working at the kind of feverish pace that became their standard, King Gizzard followed up just five months later with 2013's Eyes Like the Sky, which the band described as a "spaghetti Western audio book" complete with narration by Ambrose Kenny-Smith's father, the noted Australian musician Broderick Smith. A third full-length, Float Along, Fill Your Lungs, was released in 2013 and was quickly followed by 2014's Oddments and I'm in Your Mind Fuzz. Still working quickly, in early 2015 they released the Quarters EP, which featured four trippy, free jazz-inspired jams that each timed out exactly at 10:10.” Excerpt from https://www.allmusic.com/artist/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-mn0003085959/biography King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard: Bandcamp: https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com Instagram: @kinggizzard Website: https://kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com Merch: https://gizzverse.com Heavy Moss: Bandcamp: https://heavymoss.bandcamp.com Instagram: @heavy_moss Merch: https://heavymoss.bandcamp.com/merch/heavy-moss-milkman-t-shirt The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... 31 Jan 2025Episode 224 : Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies)01:35:37
Blasting Tchaikovsky at 5:00 in the morning, Billy Joel‘s next level move, and deep cuts from grocery store’s playlists. Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies, Cassie Ramone) Cassie Ramone- “Sweetheart LP”: https://www.cassieramone.com/store "Perhaps Ramone’s most unexpected move so far is breaking a five-year silence with a surprise video essay album, Sweetheart, uploaded to YouTube days after it was completed. Composed of 11 DIY phone vignettes filmed verité style by Ramone, the footage is raw and diaristic and is soundtracked by the album in its entirety. Despite her lengthy discography with band projects, Sweetheart is only Ramone’s second solo album; but it’s possibly her best record to date, the culmination of almost two decades of songwriting and honing her sound. Heartbreaking and raw, and featuring her sharpest writing yet, Sweetheart was crafted with collaborator Dylan White from song fragments Ramone sang into a voice recorder over bonfires at night. The finished songs range from distorted, visceral head cleaners like “They Hide Their Eyes” to melancholy starlit waltzes touched by tragedy (“Joy To The World”) to some of the catchiest songs Ramone’s ever written—take “Together” or the Mac Demarco-featuring “The Only Way I Know How” as examples. Recorded at White’s Valley Structures studio on frequent trips south to Richmond, Virginia—Ramone lives in Brooklyn—Sweetheart peels back the curtain, just a little, on the swirling, creative energy at the heart of Cassie Ramone’s music. What’s revealed is a frankness and emotional truth that’s always been there, informed by classic American songwriting and years of freewheeling living. That Ramone has released it on her own label—created with White in true DIY fashion—should come as no surprise." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 34: MJ Tirabassi (The Walters)00:45:33
The parking situation in Chicago, the truest art form, and drive-thru liquor stores. Mj Tirabassi (The Walters, Corduroy) "A true phenomenon in the world of indie-pop, The Walters first burst onto the scene in 2014 with “I Love You So” -- a self-released smash that quickly brought the Chicago-bred five-piece massive streaming success, all on the strength of their heart-on-sleeve songwriting and harmony-driven sound. After building a global fanbase and touring all over the country, The Walters began an indefinite hiatus in 2017, signing off with a crowd-thrilling set at Lollapalooza 2017. Just as they started plotting their return, the band found themselves thrown back into the pop zeitgeist when “I Love You So” exploded on TikTok in 2021, a whirlwind turn of events that’s generated more 10 billion global TikTok views to date. Along with reaching platinum status and climbing the charts at Top 40 radio—in addition to surpassing 480 million streams on Spotify (and still growing week after week) and hitting #1 in over seven countries on the Viral 50—“I Love You So” soon led to The Walters’ signing with Warner Records. Their debut release for the label, the six-track EP Try Again marks a major triumph for lead vocalist Luke Olson, lead guitarist Walter Kosner, rhythm guitarist/vocalist MJ Tirabassi, bassist Danny Wells, and drummer Charles Ekhaus, spotlighting the band’s newly sharpened songcraft while retaining their homespun charm. Produced by Ekhaus and spiked with elements of surf-pop, classic 70’s sounds and gently inventive alt-rock, Try Again mines inspiration from timeless artists like The Beach Boys, Elliot Smith and Neil Young, expertly preserving the carefree intimacy that makes The Walters so magnetic. Newly based in L.A., The Walters are now gearing up for a debut full length album that fully delivers on their undeniable promise as a musical and creative force." The ballad-centric offering will set you thinking of Bert Jansch, Tim Buckley and Gram Parsons, but for a wandering new generation looking to get engaged by something/anything. As he sings on Illusion: “That’s a pretty arrow, you know I need an illusion. I have no need for one like mine.” Casting off a half dozen snakeskins from a long apprenticeship on Tucker White’s Chthonic Records in The Great Salt Lake City — Burton signed to San Francisco’s Tompkins Square after seeing that they were kindred about what music did and does. Burton also felt this instant connection with producer Jarvis Taverniere (of Woods, prod. Whitney & Purple Mountains) Recalls Sam: “Jarvis saw me play a set at Golddiggers with Justin Sullivan and offered to record me. We met and talked about it and he seemed to be on the same page about how to treat the songs. Jarvis pushed me to make some of the songs a little more accessible and would hear a hook in someone’s playing and have them lay it down. He has a great ear and would come up with great melodic bass parts on the spot.” He spent a month and a half last year playing pre-quarantine guitar for Jess Williamson’s band all over Europe for her record, Cosmic Wink. 02 Aug 2024Episode 201: Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens)01:17:37
Cheap tuner pegs, digging deeper, and the return of the sausage breakfast sandwiches. Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens) "You could say that Parlor Greens are greater than the sum of their parts…however, the individual parts are simply stellar on their own. Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Scone is perhaps the most tasteful living organist on planet Earth (and beyond) and to watch him play is to truly watch a master at work. He bends the organ to his will like a true mastercraftsman. He’s a veteran of the soul revival scene, having played on many Daptone recording sessions since their inception, but also has learned from some of the legends of soul jazz: Melvin Sparks and The Turbanator himself Dr. Lonnie Smith. Jimmy James needs no introduction to many as he’s been seen all over the world performing with instrumental groups The True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. Perhaps the most dangerous right hand in all of soul music, his signature funky approach can be identified by even the most novice of music fans, a feat most musicians could only dream of. Tim Carman. The backbone. The pocket. Having cut his teeth touring the world with blues group GA-20, Carman’s expertise in the world of blues shuffles might make him an unlikely candidate to lay the foundation for the funky Parlor Greens, but this debut LP shows otherwise. Steady, heavy pockets and as funky as they come." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 41: Scott Montoya #2 (Soft Palms)00:57:45
Freezin season, the origin of Soft Palms, and a lunch performance. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms) "Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career." 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 48: Sade Sanchez (L.A. Witch)00:50:51
Why you should travel, a fight with a sound guy, and other interests. Sade Sanchez (L.A. Witch) "The name is a partial misnomer. Though the band hails from Los Angeles, they do not partake in any sort of witchcraft. Yet their ability to conjure a specific time and place through their sound does suggest a kind of magic. On their eponymous debut album, L.A. Witch’s reverb-drenched guitar jangle and sultry vocals conjure the analog sound of a collector’s prized 45 from some short-lived footnote cult band. The melodies forgo the bubblegum pop for a druggy haze that straddles the line between seedy glory and ominous balladry; the production can’t afford Phil Spector’s wall-of-sound, but the instruments’ simple beauty provides an economic grace that renders studio trickery unnecessary; the lyrics seem more descendent of Johnny Cash’s first-person morality tales than the vacuous empty gestures of pre-fab pop bands. This isn’t music for the masses; it’s music for miscreants, burnouts, down-and-out dreamers, and obsessive historians." Getting stuck at the Vancouver-Seattle border, The revealing nature of playing with other people, and passing out flyers in Waikiki. Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches, Last Lizard) "Alex Zhang Hungtai is a man of many names. As Dirty Beaches, he released several critically acclaimed indie rock albums, mixing what Pitchfork called “grimy, dissonant love songs” with a 1950s greaser look that made fashion editors take notice. But just as he was gaining popularity, he ditched the pomade and began making jazz-inspired music under the name Last Lizard. Recently, he released an album with a trio called Love Theme and popped up on the Showtime reboot of “Twin Peaks” as a member of the fictional band Trouble." 04 Oct 2024Episode 210 : Wyatt Blair #401:14:11
Part time investigation, DP Del, and session traditions. Wyatt Blair (Wyatt Blair, Active Decay, Lolipop Records) "Los Angeles’ Wyatt Blair can’t stop. A physical manifestation of inertia, Blair has been a musical object in motion since his father taught him to play the drums at 13 years old. In the years since, he’s spent his time playing in numerous bands, producing bands albums, releasing four self-produced solo albums, and founding the LA-based record label Lolipop Records, through which he helped break a new wave of young garage rockers out of their neighborhoods and into the world. His previous releases garnered praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Spin, Uproxx & more, and led to support slots alongside acts like The Growlers, Broncho, Screaming Females, Peach Kelli Pop, Cosmonauts and more. Now, after a tumultuous year and relocating from Los Angeles to Flagstaff & back again, Blair is taking some time to help himself the only way he knows how: Channeling his struggles into massive arena rock/power-pop songs on his new EP For The First Time." Presenting in a confident manner, listening to podcasts at the gym, and the idea of a Steely Dan play. Ruben Zarate (Dante Elephante) "Santa Barbara-based Ruben Zarate created the musical persona known as Dante Elephante in 2013. Shortly thereafter Lollipop Records released his first two LPs, German Aquatics and Anglo-Saxon Summer, both produced by Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), which saw praise from Consequence of Sound, Funny or Die, and Brooklyn Vegan. In the summer of 2018 Elephante then digitally released a full-length, Rare Attractions, leading to appearances at SXSW, Treefort Festival, as well as tours supporting The Orwells, Summer Salt, and Real Estate. Two records and a headlining tour under his belt, Dante Elephante now offers his most accomplished work to date: Mid-Century Modern Romance, produced by Paul Cherry, features eight soulful, disco-kissed tracks, seemingly right out of 1979." 11 Apr 2025Episode 232 : Ryan Weinstein (Coffin Prick)00:58:58
The tone of instrumental music, sponges becoming a little less damp, and non-conscious crafting. Ryan Weinstein (Coffin Prick, Coffin Pricks) DRFT18: Coffin Prick- "Loose Enchantment" (Pre-Order)- https://coffinprick.bandcamp.com/album/loose-enchantment "Today Temporal Drift is pleased to officially add LA artist Coffin Prick to its roster and to announce the new album, Loose Enchantment, which will be released on April 4, 2025 – you can stream the title track from the LP now. Over and through the hot cement of North East L.A., an almost-dry riverbed winds like a snake through the city. Coyotes lap at its trickling stream by moonlight, as pedestrians rush past it by day without a second glance, their thoughts tangled up in the distractions of life in a sprawling metropolis. Here, amongst the many avenues and gentle hills, we find Coffin Prick (alias: Ryan Weinstein). Loose Enchantment, this latest Coffin Prick record, is music conceived of in a different frame of mind for humans living in a world nearly-disenchanted with itself. The album consists of eleven new pieces of music recorded by Coffin Prick himself at his home in Los Angeles, a great city of quicksand-like commitments and those who love them enough to uphold the ends of their collective bargains. A record as much about the confusion of modern life as it is endeavored to expose the lusts in the very loins of creation. Sounds enchanting enough for you? Let’s look a little more closely… Coffin Prick primarily records on his own, though occasionally receives great collaborative assistance from a sometimes-silent and shadowy partner, Pancho. When the time is right, he leans on a host of harmonically sympathetic luminaries that exist in and out of his immediate musical community. These musical endeavors implement elements of the technologically advanced and the undeniably broken. Equally informed by the not-so-distant past as imaginary future scenarios, his ongoing recorded life continues to mine this deep well. Not so much a “solo” performer as an idea, Coffin Prick is a malleable form whose potential is concurrently cemented and unknown. On the heels of 2023’s Laughing (Sophomore Lounge), Coffin Prick got busy. And fast. Playing shows into the year with a newly minted live band, while simultaneously working day and night in his home studio laying the ground for what would become Loose Enchantment. Whereas he was essentially a recording know-nothing at the inception of his last LP, he’d learned a thing or two about better capturing his ideas by this point, taking the sidesteps and victories born of the experience Laughing provided and turning the bright lights on them. As many of Los Angeles’s drivers choose to do, it was time to take some surface roads. Odes to self-delusion, the mysteries of creation, cleanliness, and the secrets in other people’s lives. A little Loose Enchantment for everyone, basically." The third episode of The Vineyard Podcast W/ Yaan Pessino & Joey Bonano (The Pesos) "If you are a sucker for jangly retro garage surf bands, like I am, then there is a reason to celebrate this spring as The Pesos release their much anticipated new album Laissez-Faire (Lolipop Records). You might recall the Pesos released two EP's in 2017, Casual Encounters #1 and Casual Encounters #2. These two releases succeeded in broadening the sound of the Pesos, moving them beyond another band that fits seamlessly on another Beach Goth Festival lineup. Similarly to the Growlers and other modern surf bands like Allah-Las and The Babe Rainbow, The Pesos actually surf, and there's an intangible quality to their music that honours the image or idea of the lonely surfer, while carving out a space unique to them." So it’s no surprise that Surf Curse, a band that has dedicated itself to expressing the heartbreaks and alienation and small triumphs of growing up, has managed to thrive in DIY spaces, grubby clubs and wherever teenagers and lapsed teenagers can be found online—from their humble origins on Myspace to their rise through Tumblr to Bandcamp and now the 2021 equivalent of MTV—their eight-year old song is a viral smash on TikTok." Not getting a clear signal path, Thurston Moore having the best time, and 2:00 AM creativeness. Phil Pirrone (JJUUJJUU, Desert Daze) "In the 13th gigennium of cosmic expansion, minerals fired from the deaths of immense astrological engines of atomic fusion have coalesced, bubbled up, been digested and excreted innumerable times by increasingly complex lifeforms, fused as spermatazoon and ovum in passionate ballets of furious congress, producing beings who in turn survived and thrived by ingesting and metabolizing these same ancient minerals in all states of complexity, from rock to infant and most likely excrement, because nobody washes their hands. Primordial explosions formed rocks that learned to speak and to write, to dance, mine phosphates, destroy, love, eat rotten fruit to get drunk and eventually refine that process into the production of churro flavored vodka (look it up, it’s real). All this thrives due to the radiation blocking fields produced by a molten core made of speakers and guitar strings. No, really. Steel wound with nickel, magnets, vibrations. It’s all the same shit. Connecting with nature, European cafe vibes, and 17th century counterpoint. Jared Mattson (Mattson 2, Jared Mattson) "The Mattson 2’s recent output has found them (jazz twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson) evoking the lush and carefree soundscapes of Japanese city pop. Their 2018 release Vaults of Eternity: Japan was full of loving reinterpretations of songs by artists like Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and while their latest LP Paradise doesn’t indulge in sonic excess, it does capture that breezy, sun-filled vibe. It charted Billboard at #1 Contemp. Jazz, #2 Jazz, #20 Alternative and landed features in the Washington Post and Pitchfork. Amongst collabs w/ Ray Barbee, ‪Tommy Guerrero,‬ Farmer Dave (of ‪Kurt Vile‬), and ‪‪Money Mark‬ (‬of ‪‪Beastie Boys‬‬)‪, they released Star Stuff in 2017 with ‬Chaz Bear (FKA Chaz Bundick, AKA Toro Y Moi) — also #1 on Billboard contemp. jazz charts — and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme which Ashely Kahn (author of A Love Supreme: The Creation of John Coltrane’s Classic Album, 2002) says “there is a depth of sincerity and reverence in what the Mattson’s are doing that is unquestionable.”" Excerpt from http://www.mattson2.com/about Jared Mattson: Bandcamp: https://jaredmattson.bandcamp.com/album/peanut Instagram: @jaredmattsonmusic Website: https://linktr.ee/jaredmattsonmusic?fbclid=PAAaaB0rcoWAj8z0rhXG2BS79ib2vTe-DRLfR_myJwv9Dyk4R6eIqRAQkpOR8 Merch: https://store.carparkrecords.com/products/730586-chi17-jared-mattson-peanut Mattson 2: Bandcamp: https://themattson2.bandcamp.com Instagram: @themattson2 Website: http://www.mattson2.com Merch: http://www.mattson2.com/store The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Brendan Sepe (Semi Trucks, The Pesos) "Semi Trucks, created, fronted, and curated by California bred Brendan Sepe, are a “magic school bus”-esque escapade on track to bring art pop to the top of the charts. Semi Trucks, in the words of Brendan Sepe to you, “thank you, for being there.” -Noah Nash." 03 Oct 2022Episode 99: Laila Hashemi (The Paranoyds)00:47:27
Working with Obama, being a spring chicken, and a Kirkland Signature sponsorship. Laila Hashemi (The Paranoyds) "The Paranoyds have the kind of connection people only dream of: as non-biological sisters who have known each other longer than they haven’t and speak a language that no one else can understand. It’s that special bond that has solidified their relationship as bandmates who connect seamlessly to one another’s energy on stage—and best friends. And it’s the one thing that has remained a constant throughout the past two years." A hazy period, the shower singers of New Zealand, and setting the premise. Joe’s very first release, full of tape and reverberated flavours, made waves across the globe, due to its timeless appeal and the co-release partnership between Third Eye Stimuli and Six Tonnes de Chair (France). Sure to please fans of The Babe Rainbow, Mystic Braves, White Fence and 60’s era groups like The Seeds and The Notorious Byrd Brothers, Joe Ghatt has a way of effortlessly fusing classic and nostalgic music with his own authentic and potent sound — all recorded the old fashion way — straight to magnetic tape. During his maiden tour of Australia, his band performed at a slew of sold out shows, where he successfully transformed his humble home recordings into a wild performance, full of extended jams and flowing improvisation. In 2020 the band supported California’s Allah Las on their tour of NZ, playing sold out shows to rooms full of adoring fans." Aliens, Seinfeld, and desert internet. Pearl Charles (Pearl Charles, The Blank Tapes) "Charles has been playing music since she was 5 years old. At 18, she formed country duo The Driftwood Singers with Christian Lee Hutson, singing and playing guitar and autoharp. At 22, she joined garage rock band The Blank Tapes as drummer. After two fun-filled years immersed in the rock and roll lifestyle, she decided it was time to pursue her own songwriting, and began developing the songs that formed 2015′s eponymous debut EP. Drawn to poppy hooks and catchy choruses, Charles draws on what she loves about the 60s, 70s and 80s while developing her unique style as a solo artist. In 2018, Pearl released debut album, Sleepless Dreamer, which Rough Trade described as "The best country pop we've heard in years" and Buzzfeed called her "A modern June Carter meets Lana Del Rey." With the upcoming release of the follow up, Magic Mirror, out January 15, 2021, Pearl leans into furthering her own brand of country-disco." 01 Nov 2024Episode 214 : Josh Menashe #3 (Frankie & The Witch Fingers)01:11:03
Getting gourmet, a preset on the Yamaha DX7, and obtaining rollercoaster engineering experience. Josh Menashe (Frankie & The Witch Fingers) Frankie and the Witch Fingers - Bonehead / i-Candy 7" (PRE-ORDER)- https://shop.greenwayrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/frank "Over the past decade Frankie and the Witch Fingers have operated as an outright force of nature, offering up a revelatory form of psych-rock that hits on both a primal and ecstatically mind-bending level. In the making of their new album Data Doom, the Los Angeles-based four-piece forged a sublimely galvanizing sound informed by their love of Afrobeat and proto-punk—a potent vessel for their frenetic meditations on technological change run rampant, encroaching fascism, and corrosive systems of power. Animated by the explosive energy they’ve brought to the stage in sharing bills with such eclectic acts as Ty Segall and ZZ Top, the result is a major leap forward for one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking bands working today. Rooted in the cerebral yet viscerally commanding songwriting of co-founders Dylan Sizemore (vocals, guitar) and Josh Menashe (lead guitar, synth), Data Doom marks the first Frankie and the Witch Fingers album created with bassist Nikki “Pickle” Smith (formerly of Death Valley Girls) and drummer Nick Aguilar (previously a touring drummer for punk legend Mike Watt). In crafting their most rhythmically complex work to date, the band drew heavily from each new member’s distinct sensibilities: Smith tapped into her extensive background in West African drumming (an art form she first discovered thanks to her music-instructor parents), while Aguilar leaned into formative influences like longtime Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Self-produced by the DIY-minded band and recorded direct to tape by Menashe, Data Doom ultimately took shape through countless sessions in their Southeast L.A. rehearsal space, with Frankie and the Witch Fingers allowing themselves unlimited time to explore their most magnificently strange impulses." 17 Jan 2025Episode 222 : Jeroen Reek (Iguana Death Cult)01:00:14

Jeroen Reek (Iguana Death Cult, Parisian Night Suit) IGUANA DEATH CULT- TINY TEARS / PACINO IN HEAT 45- https://innovativeleisure.net/collections/iguana-death-cult "After the pandemic hit, and the people of the world suddenly grew wary and suspicious of one another, Iguana Death Cult, one of Europe’s most exciting rock exports, became more than just a band to its members—it became therapy. “I think for the first ten times we went to jam,” says guitarist/vocalist Tobias Opschoor, speaking about the process of making the new album Echo Palace, “we just drank wine and talked about it, and just kept on talking for hours—and then were like, ‘OK, I have to go because I have to work tomorrow.’” Taking place at frontman Jeroen Reek’s apartment in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, these gatherings slowly shifted from talking about this surreal chapter of their lives—the days of quiet streets and cramped buildings—to making music about it. “I was living in a really crappy, leaky, ready-for-demolition apartment,” explains Reek, “with just one heat source—like a really old-school, gas stove kind of thing.” Working on cold nights, they had to gather around that heater together—a cozy approach that ultimately got their creative flow going, fast." Records with no covers, Law of attraction, and accounting for vibe. Lars Finberg (The Intelligence, Lars Finberg) “Lars Finberg, confirmed genius guy and poet laureate of sunken 21st century Rock, acts as manager in perpetuity of THE INTELLIGENCE, primary vehicle for his prolific creative swirl and a project that has taken on new shapes across myriad trials and shifts. The project began in his Seattle bedroom – a lad and his Tascam cassette 8 track – with the classic Boredom & Terror and has now landed in his Los Angeles studio apartment – an urchin and his Tascam digital 12 track – with Lil’ Peril, a new album that finds Finberg 1000% back at the controls. Over the course of 11 albums (!), The Intelligence has established a backbone that boogies through revolutions, allowing each jam-crammed dispatch to feel and sound admirably unique. The angular sharp shocks heard in earlier years have steadily evolved into the ballooning grooves heard on more recent releases (including Finberg’s recent solo work). Lil’ Peril is a dreamy gamble that captures this current bubbling penchant in The Intelligence’s inaugural homemade mode." 04 Aug 2023Episode 150: Ariel Hartley (Pearl Earl)00:52:03
House shows in Denton Texas, hard hangovers, and not being able to see out of the right side of a van. Ariel Hartley (Pearl Earl) Pearl Earl “IT’S DREAD” album: https://pearlearl.bandcamp.com/album/its-dread “Pearl Earl is an all-female rock band from Denton, Texas made up of Ariel Hartley, Bailey K Chapman, Stefanie Lazcano and Chelsey Danielle. The band was founded Summer 2014 by Hartley, Chapman, and Lazcano and quickly became more than just a drunken jam party. The band almost immediately began touring nationally and regionally and in 2015 released their debut EP titled Karaoke Superstar. Pearl Earl shows began to attract music lovers of all persuasions, and they gained traction in DFW with airplay, and event regional awards. Pearl Earl’s sound is a psychedelic cornucopia of the glitter and sparkle of glam rock, the space and cosmic intervention of prog, the angst and grit of punk, and the synth pop of the times of neon jumpsuits and disco balls. The band’s debut full length and self titled album was recorded in Dallas at Elmwood Recording by Alex Bhore and Brack Cantrell. Mastering was handled by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters. Hartley, Chapman, and Lazcano began recording the album in August 2016, with Danielle joining the band after its completion. Hartley is the key songwriter of the evolving project with each song coming into its own with the rest of the band. The songs on the album are each their own animal; where “Star in the Sky” dives into an epic ode to prog rock with accenting flutes and space soundtrack synths, “Take A Shot” explores a tongue and cheek almost doo-wop, organ ornamented pop song with a double entendre. The psychedelic spaghetti western style and funk in “Captain Howdy” will dance you into confusion when the time signature and key change takes a twist; and “I Know” will leave you feeling soft and somber for the album’s finale. The lyrical content ranges from whimsical characters to introspection and moving forward to internal anxiety about the state of America. With influences from many eras of music, Pearl Earl has the power to transmit you to the past and the future and back again.” Excerpt from https://livesessions.npr.org/artists/pearl-earl#:~:text=Pearl%20Earl%20is%20an%20all,just%20a%20drunken%20jam%20party. 15 Dec 2023Episode 169: Molly Burch00:47:33
Starting on the East coast, bringing a dog on tour, and a healthy mix of ballads and upbeat songs. Molly Burch Molly Burch’s “Daydreamer”- https://www.omnianmusicgroup.com/products/daydreamer "Molly Burch was exposed to the arts at an early age. Growing up in Los Angeles with a writer/producer father and a casting director mother, Burch's childhood was filled with old Hollywood musicals and the sounds of Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. After finding her voice in adolescence, Burch packed up for the University of North Carolina in Asheville to study Jazz Vocal Performance. “I was always really interested in singing before songwriting. I didn’t have the confidence to write,” Molly says, “Initially it was more about finding the right songs to complement my voice.” And that voice is the first thing you’ll notice on Burch's debut album, Please Be Mine. It’s smoky, with an incredible range, effortlessly evocative of her early influences. It was in Asheville where Burch would meet guitarist Dailey Toliver, who plays on her debut, and who inspired much of its music. Searching for a bigger pond, Burch moved to Austin, Texas in an effort to stand on her own two feet. There, Burch began to write her own music in earnest, with the lovelorn Everly Brothers and Sam Cooke as her songwriting guides. Joined by Toliver in Austin a year later, the two connected with Dan Duszynski of Cross Record, and they recorded all the songs on Please Be Mine at his idyllic studio in Dripping Springs, Texas. Motivated by the hourly rate, Burch and her band recorded all the basic tracks and vocals live in one room and in one day, with minimal overdubs for keys and back-up vocals happening a day later. A difficult task for any talented musician, it becomes more mind-blowing when you hear her belt it on tracks like “Downhearted” and “I Love You Still.” We're all lucky Molly started writing music simply to complement her voice, as we've discovered a great new American songwriter in the process. Captured Tracks is proud to present this debut album of ten beautiful, wistful love songs of loss, loneliness and reconnecting." 03 Mar 2023Episode 128: Lucas Fitzsimons #2 (The CUSP)01:07:54
Operating on a relaxed schedule, playing a show by the river, and a collection of scattered tracks. Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP, The Molochs) "The CUSP, a change, a prophecy, a realization that what once was will soon be no more. For Los Angeles’ Lucas Fitzsimons, The CUSP is not just apropos new solo project but a new creative beginning. Disillusioned and stymied by his former band The Molochs, Fitzsimons felt chewed up and spit out by a vague but all too familiar enemy. From Primavera Sound to pushin’ popcorn at a local theatre, lost inspiration and a confused mind became good fodder for change. As Fitzsimons recalls, “It took a while to admit I didn’t want to do my old band anymore. I just didn’t wanna do it. After nearly a decade with the Molochs, I couldn’t imagine starting something new without it seeming like some sort of desperate attempt to stay afloat. It was undeniable, though, and I had, I HAVE, no choice. A little part of me had to die in order for the Cusp to be born. Whatever died made room for something new.” Fitzsimons found new inspiration in the off kilter poetry-like lyrics of Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder, The DIY philosophy of Nipsey Hussle and Tommy Wright III, the bass heavy dub productions of King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood, and the psyched out rhymes of P-Funk. “I started hearing something different in music… the Dylanesque wordiness was shoved away by bass lines, by groovy drum beats, by sparse (yet eloquent) lyrics. I found a sub bass had more to say to me than heady lyrical verses.”" Excerpt from https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com/track/gum-2 The CUSP: Instagram: @luquilasoda Bandcamp: https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Sharing influences, being in the moment, and getting too experimental. Paco Casanova (Paco Casanova, Prettiest Eyes, Corimia, Nakata) ""Last year’s “Pools" having taken up a sizable chunk of our cold dark hearts, we were delighted to hear that LA post-industrial trio Prettiest Eyes have a new gang of crowd-stirrers. None too early, either; once you’ve become accustomed to their clanging synthetic orbit, it’s hard to find other tunes that truly scratch the same itch. Volume 3 bursts at the seams with chrome-dipped timbres and surprise sharp edges, alien klaxon-calls and wailing dissonance offsetting the ziplock’d grease of their insistent drum and bass grooves. A steady diet of music, getting the ball rolling, and playing sweaty shows in hectic environments. Pablo Sotelo (Inner Wave) "Four years ago, Inner Wave was making the kind of music that soundtracks the tender, reflective moments in a coming-of-age story – but without any of the cliché tropes those cinematic depictions often rely on. At the time, “American Spirits” was one of the group’s most popular songs, even though they’re an Inglewood-raised, LA-based indie rock boy band over a decade in the making. Unlike the slow burn and faintly harsh pull of the natural tobacco product of the song’s namesake, this track has a blissful build, guided by a guitar strum and a subtle tambourine shake. When the drop finally hits just 11 seconds in, it’s a full rush of uneasy euphoria." 13 Sep 2024Episode 207: Aaron Frazer #2 (Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer)01:48:25
The deplaning playlist, the matter of subtraction, and forgoing the visual aspect of the television show “Succession.” Aaron Frazer (Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer, Okonski) Aaron Frazer - Full Performance (LIVE on 88.5FM The SoCal Sound)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj6xrZpMsaA&t=1201s "“Into The Blue is the clearest portrait of who I am as an artist. It’s me through and through,” says multi-instrumentalist Aaron Frazer. Following his acclaimed 2021 debut, Into the Blue is expansive- a daring blend of soul, psychedelia, spaghetti western, disco, gospel and hip-hop, representing the impressive range of Frazer’s sonic talents. Frazer maintains the unmistakable falsetto and classic songwriting he’s known for, but plants Into the Blue firmly in the now with a hip-hop mentality at its core, weaving together genres and production techniques to form something new. The opener, “Thinking of You,” is harmony-laden soul drawing inspiration from legendary Harlem trio Black Ivory over a bed of strings. “Lonely nights like this, still I feel your kiss,” Frazer coos nostalgically in his high register. Later, on “Time Will Tell,” he plaintively considers the end of a relationship, “trying to figure out // how love went from sweet to sour.” Into The Blue was conceived, like so many classic records, out of heartbreak. Following the end of a long relationship, Frazer moved cross-country from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and embarked on a journey that’s reflected in the album’s themes of grief, loneliness, and searching for healing. “Into The Blue really means heading into the unknown. That has been the last year of my life and I’m still in the blue,” Frazer explains. “But there are also songs here that celebrate love and the giddiness of a new relationship and all that. That’s part of a breakup to me, processing the whole thing, remembering the things that were right as much as the things that were wrong.” The title track, “Into The Blue”, is a haunting, resolute anthem, combining cinematic strings and tough-as-nails breakbeats as Frazer heads west. “Here I go, to a place where the broken heart knows,” he sings. “It’s all I can do. Back into the blue.” Frazer wrote on every track and played several live instruments on the album. “Payback” is an explosive dancefloor heater, featuring shimmering tambourines and driving" Excerpt from https://aaronfrazermusic.com Aaron Frazer: Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/album/introducing Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron-frazer Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com Durand Jones & The Indications Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp.com/merch Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.secretlystore.com/private-space-durand-jones-and-the-indications Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 56: Chris Michael (Guantanamo Baywatch)01:03:33
Booking house shows, and a 20 day tour consisting of 40 sets, and climbing over a wall of amps to get out of bed. Chris Michael (Guantanamo Baywatch) "Halfway between LA and Phoenix on a desolate stretch of I-10 lies Desert Center, a mostly abandoned town that mainly serves as a gas stop along the barren interior of California. Portland punks Guantanamo Baywatch, like so many touring bands, have passed through the town countless times on their way between shows. But the town has also become a particular source of inspiration for guitarist/vocalist Jason Powell, who recently relocated from Oregon to Arizona. It may seem ironic that a band that draws so heavily from surf rock would find their muse in a location so far from the beach, but it’s not as if The Ventures were hitting the waves in their hometown of Tacoma or Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet were waxing their boards in Toronto. Truth is, Desert Center was the place where Powell first farted in front of his girlfriend, resulting in their use of “desert centering” as code for passing gas. But Guantanamo Baywatch’s new album Desert Center isn’t an ode to bodily functions or breaking down comfort barriers within relationships. Rather, it’s a perfect reminder of the ecstatic rabble-rousing documentation of life in America’s lonely outposts offered up by that first wave of electric guitar pioneers." 06 Dec 2024Episode 218 : Jon Modaff (Hooveriii, Frankie & The Witch Fingers)01:13:22
Cultivating appreciation, the mode of comfortability, and the inherent check-out period. Jon Modaff (Hooveriii, Sweet Country Meat Boys, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, Groop, Primitive Ring, JModaff) "Primitive Ring consists of Bert Hoover (Hoover III, Groop), Jon Modaff (JModaff, Hooveriii, Groop), and Charles Moothart (Fuzz, GØGGS). The three LA based musicians found each other in a collective state of high functioning de evolution, and collectively agreed to bend the knee to the primal instincts of melody and rhythm. Primitive Ring started when the three members realized their worlds were organically converging. Seeking a new well to pitch the mental bucket in search of creative fluidity, the choice became obvious: start a new band. "Bring in the new" is not to say "Out with the old". It is to continue the story and elaborate on the plot. A band of three individuals (ring) tapping in to their collective sound (ring) to form a solid bond (ring) in which to burn away superfluous modernity (ring). Rock and roll is for everyone and belongs to no one." Excerpt from https://anniversarygroup.com/Primitive-Ring. 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 63: Ben Schwab (Sylvie)00:52:54
Every dish everyday, rollerblading, and finding healthy obsessions. Ben Schwab (Sylvie, Golden Daze, DrugDealer) "Last month, a new band called Sylvie — featuring Drug Dealer’s Benjamin Schwab alongside Marina Allen and Sam Burton — announced a self-titled debut EP on Terrible Records. At the time, they shared a song called “Sylvie,” but it wasn’t a case of a band writing an eponymous song. Rather, it was a cover that gave the band its name and inspiration in the first place. The original is an obscure ’70s track by Ian Matthews, and the band had taken to referring to such songs as “a Sylvie” — “a song from the past that’s incredible but for whatever reason, is basically unknown.” It’s a fitting mission statement for the band, who make music that could’ve been beamed in from unknown corners of bygone decades." 03 Oct 2022Episode 103: Cameron Kinghorn (King Pari)01:45:18
Knowing everyone’s name, being farm to turntable, and trusting whatever comes. Cameron Kinghorn (King Pari and Nooky Jones) King Pari is an almost accidental project. Cameron Kinghorn (Nooky Jones) and Joe Paris Christensen (PHO) didn’t even set out to start a band. When Joe texted Cameron some jams whipped up on his tape machine, Cameron hit him back with “what is this? I want in”. Ten minutes before they first linked up, Joe built the loop for their first single, ‘Sunshine,’ which they then wrote on the spot in a flurry on collective inspiration. The rest of their forthcoming ‘MARY EP’ grew from recording sessions in Joe’s Northeast Minneapolis bedroom, a guest house in New Orleans and a cabin in rural Wisconsin. Minneapolis left an obvious mark — the influence of Prince and the Minneapolis Sound, approached from a fresh psychedelic angle. It’s been called stonersoul, lo-fi R&B, dub meets 80’s electro with a heavy dose of funk. 03 Oct 2022The Vineyard Podcast Episode 69: Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP)00:57:00
Deep memory banks, green juice, and being a working lad.

Comprised of songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaires Alec Kersenboom and Anthony Masino (Lee Fields, Thee Sacred Souls, Jensine Benitez, Junior Scaife, et al), the group delivers a pair of pop nuggets that draw from the deeper end of the British Invasion spectrum. Similar to some the American teen combos that were blaring out of suburban garages throughout the mid-sixties, The Emkays deliver their brand of anglophilic rock with a soulful earnestness that was absent from many of their British counterparts. Beck showing up to a show with Brad Pitt, an oddly specific grifter, and checking stuff out. Dan Rincon (Thee Oh Sees) "Psych-punk psychic warrior, ear worm-farmer, and possessor of many stamped passport pages John Dwyer does not let up. His group Oh Sees (aka Thee Oh Sees, OCS, The Oh Sees, etc) have transmogrified to fit many a moment - from hushed druggy folk to groovy demonic pop chants to science fictional krautrock expanse and beyond - to suit his omnivorous whims. It’s common knowledge however, that at their shows, you’re there asking for a beating. 20 years going and the shows keep getting more and more intense, as many a soupy swarm can attest. The locked-in Rincon/Quattrone drum cops propel masses of strangers to froth and lean into each other as the insistent and repetitive underpinning tumbles nimbly from Tim Hellman’s bass. Meanwhile John ricochets breathy yips and snippets of synth and all manner of guitar heroics around your brain canyons while your reptile instincts yell “move”. Finding a surfboard in the ceiling, working as a gallery administrator, and a mission of discovery. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms, Happy Sundays, Studios For Studios) "Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career.” Excerpt from https://www.softpalmsmusic.com/about/ Scott’s Metadata Links: Music streaming services don't pay much, which is a problem, but there's a good chance you're not collecting the (insulting amount of) money that they ARE paying you. Title, artist name, date of recording, ISRC, website, album art are all examples of metadata. This is where things get a bit hazy for me. I've been doing research on the xml file that accompanies an album and found Apple's Basic Album Metadata Example, which has the ISNI of each performer and their role in creating the album (credits). I don't know how Apple generates this xml sheet. Please help if you have any info. I made a spreadsheet that contains the metadata that would go on this Apple XML file. It has the current (as of 8/8/2024) roles and genre codes. Here's a link to the template, feel free to copy it. Soft Palms: Bandcamp: https://softpalms.bandcamp.com/album/... A old horse freeway, buying Hilly Kristal’s 4-Track recorder, and playing the canned seltzer circuit. Grady Wenrich (Grady Strange) "Grady Strange is the solo music mission of Grady Wenrich, along with help from his partner Mackenzie Howe aka Pet Dress, their dog Dolly Parton, and friends. Based out of LA, some call it "saltwater cowgirl rocknroll", others call it an honest attempt. And what else can we do these days? The world is dying and giving you all that it can so you can have a good time." 14 Mar 2025Episode 229 : Jacob Faulkner (LA LOM)01:12:50
A bursting moment of electricity, the well intentioned first version of World music, and working in the Roosevelt Hotel Lobby 4-5 nights a week for 3 hours a night. Jacob Faulkner (LA LOM, The Americans) Los Angeles League of Musicians Album (Videos)- https://www.youtube.com/playlist "LA LOM In the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles’s music scene, LA LOM stands out for its ability to seamlessly weave together the diverse genres and cultures of the city into its music. Short for The Los Angeles League of Musicians, LA LOM is composed of LA natives Zac Sokolow (Guitar), Jake Faulkner (Bass), and Nicholas Baker (Drums/Percussion). The roots of LA LOM reach back to 2019, when the band was assembled to play five nights a week in the lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. Initially tasked with providing background music for hotel patrons, tourists, and passersby off the street, LA LOM soon began experimenting with a genre-transcending repertoire that reflects the diverse musical diaspora of Angelenos. LA LOM started out reimagining instrumental renditions of the soulful ballads from the 1950s and ’60s that they grew up listening to on LA’s oldies station, K-EARTH 101, evoking the laid-back aesthetic that defines the region, and drawing inspiration from luminaries like Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, and Brenda and the Tabulations. Their sonic palette expanded to encompass the romantic allure of classic Mexican Boleros and the Cumbia Sonidera woven into the very fabric of the city's soundscape, resonating through the streets from car stereos, backyard parties, and lively dance halls. LA LOM carved out a sound that blends all of these elements with the guitar-driven twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country. Zac Sokolow's musical lineage spans generations. He began his creative journey performing alongside his father, a respected figure in LA's bluegrass community, whose family relocated from Buenos Aires to LA in the 1930s. Jake Faulkner comes from a family of Venice artists and met Zac at age 16. Zac and Jake honed their craft through years of collaboration in various bands within Southern California's vibrant Rockabilly scene before eventually joining to form LA LOM. Nicholas Baker was steeped in Latin music from childhood by his grandmother, who hailed from a musical family in Durango, Mexico, and gained fame as a DJ on a Spanish-language radio station in Tucson, Arizona. He studied Latin percussion with renowned Nuyorican bassist and percussionist Roberto Miranda. LA LOM have quickly ascended to playing to thousands of people and have captured the attention of Beck, Vampire Weekend and Zane Lowe." 20 Oct 2023Episode 161: Danny Lee Blackwell (Night Beats, Abraxas)00:57:25
Chasing off scorpions, evolving into something else, and studying time. Danny Lee Blackwell (Night Beats, Abraxas) “Night Beats is the brain-child of Native Texan Danny Lee Blackwell. The soundtrack of a generation, the band’s R&B inspired Western Psychedelic sound is a reckoning, a shoot-out at dawn, the ear-splitting peel-out that leaves nothing but a cloud of red dust in its wake. Through the years Night Beats has garnered a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of contemporary rock’n’roll around. They’ve clocked up critical acclaim, toured around the world and shared the stage with the likes of Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The Black Angels, Roky Erickson and The Jesus and Mary Chain, among many others.” Excerpt from https://thenightbeats.us/pages/info Night Beats: Bandcamp: https://nightbeats.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @thenightsbeats Website: https://thenightbeats.us Merch: https://nightbeats.bandcamp.com/merch Abraxas: Bandcamp: https://abraxasintl.bandcamp.com/album/monte-carlo Instagram: @abraxasintl Merch: https://abraxasintl.bandcamp.com/merch Records: https://suicide-squeeze.myshopify.com/products/abraxas-monte-carlo The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K...
