On this week’s episode, Ike and Steve are breaking down some Land Rover news, and talking about some relevant adjacent stories. (1:22) BYD is making a “Budget Defender”, and the guys talk about what that means. Will it come to the US? We’re not convinced. (5:13) Emme Hall won the Gambler event at the Mint 400 in her off-road Miata, Buddy. Has that lit the fire under Steve and Abigail’s tail feathers to start on their off-road Miata project? (8:00) Steve gives us yet another status update on the Freelander, and while we think the transmission is fixed, there’s a sound in the rear axle that’s got us worried… (10:46) Ike sent some new old stock brake drums to the CKD boys in Australia, and bought a suitcase in which to send them with a friend as a carry on. We bet that was a fun flight. (12:23) Ike updates us on the Prince Phillip TDCI 110 Defender that recently went to auction and sold for £123,000. They then talk about the real costs involved in bringing a vehicle over to the US that’s not legal to import, and figure that £123k is probably a steal at the end of the day. (15:14) We revisit an old segment we like to call “Rover Faux Pas”, or, “What Grinds Ike’s Gears”. This is where Ike airs some of his pet peeves when it comes to classic Rovers, and some of these are huge red flags you’ll want to look for when buying an old Land Rover.  This includes an ill-fitting soft top (tuck in your flaps!), and (18:40) unsecured wiring harnesses, and (20:52) using the wrong fasteners, be it unnecessarily long rivets, and the overuse of Philips head screws. (23:48) Rounding out this week’s episode, Steve and Ike have a Tip Top Tool Tip on Tire Repair Tools and kits, and everyone needs to have some of these tools on board their truck. We break down sidewall plugs (“gummy pipe cleaners”) and how they work, the mushroom style plugs, screw in stud repair kits. Steve talks when to patch and when to put on the spare, and even goes into detail on repairs that require taking the tire off the wheel and some things to know. This week on the Underpowered Hour, we’ve got a lot of business to catch up on! 

First up, DriveTribe has done a video about our friend Julian Schoolheifer’s restoration of the very first production Land Rover, JUE 477. Next up, there’s a unique Red Camel Trophy car up on Bring a Trailer; the guys recorded this a few hours before the auction closed, so Ike and Steve debate whether the fact that it is red helps or hinders the collectible nature of the vehicle. And word on the street is that a new, mallet, all electric Defender has been confirmed for 2027. Will it be called Defender Sport? Why not, there’s already a Range Rover Sport and a Discovery Sport. Seems fitting, even if Bronco has jumped on that bandwagon too. 

Then, we’ve got a favorite segment we call “Love It, Can’t Have It”, and this time we’re drooling over the German market Surf Defender in coveted Marine Blue. Consider this our official petition to make that color available in the rest of the world. Who knew that the luxury SUV market in Germany was synonymous with surfing? 🏄‍♂️

Then, we’re dishing on Immitation Rovers: Modern edition, and noting how the recently released Toyota Land Cruiser and the Hyundai Santa Fe are certainly borrowing some features from the new Defender. Particularly surprising is everyone’s obsession with copying the spice rack- we make fun of it a lot, but the market trends suggest people dig theirs! What do you put in your spice rack?

This week, Ike and Steve nerd out and do some deep dives talking about things they really love.  First up, Land Rover news, and for once, we're feeling positive about JLR's financials.  Love It, Can't Have It: Suzuki Jimney (at this point, it seems personal, like they really don't want Stephen to ever own one).  A new segment on Mondays called "Winch Wednesdays", because its our show, and no one can stop us! Ike weighs the pros and cons of the Land Rover Hydraulic Winch.  Then, the guys finish the show with a Tip Top Tool Tip all about bench vices, and share more than you ever wanted to know about this versatile and necessary shop tool.

20 years ago, Land Rover held the first ever G4 Challenge.  A global marketing event designed to showcase the newest model of Range Rover, Freelander, Defender and Discovery, the event took place over four weeks in four different global locations. The fourth and final stage of the event took the competitors on a breathtaking 800+ mile route from Las Vegas, NV, to Moab, UT.  

So how do you pay homage to this iconic part of Rover history? Well, if you’re So-cal resident and rover enthusiast Steve Cooper, you find a few fellow G4 Range Rover owners who own the original competition vehicles here in the US, and set out to recreate the route taken by the original competitors.  And to do that, you reach out to none other than Land Rover photographer extraordinaire himself, Mr. Nick Dimbleby, who photographed the original event.

Liza joins Ike this week as they interview Steve Cooper, who dreamed up this harebrained recreation, and Chris Georgacas, who deciphered Nick’s notes and maps for this epic road trip. The four are joined by Nick Dimbleby himself, who gives us all some excellent insight into the original event.

Hear about some of the fun and adventure that was had by the gang as four of the original eight left hand drive Range Rovers used for the event re-traced the steps.  Joined by the Underpowered Hour’s very own Liza and Abigail to document the fun, this adventure was undertaken by true enthusiasts of the best 4x4xfar.
