26 Aug 2024 | #44 - Pulitzer Prize, Fighting Discrimination, Washington Post, & Humility | 02:44:22
Leon Dash is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a former reporter for the Washington Post, and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Dash introduces himself as a "barefoot boy from Harlem," a humbling reminder of his roots that keeps him grounded. Imagine a young Leon Dash, shivering in the cold Washington winter, desperately seeking an indoor job. With nothing but hope and determination, he walks into Robert Kennedy's senatorial office, heart pounding, palms sweating. No luck there, but a sympathetic staffer points him towards the Washington Post. In a moment of serendipity, Dash races across town in a taxi, praying there isn't already a line of applicants. He arrives, breathless, to find he's the only one there. What started as a night copyboy position in 1965, born out of pure necessity, would blossom into a distinguished career spanning decades. Throughout his career, Dash consistently challenged middle-class assumptions about poverty and social issues. His Pulitzer Prize-winning series, "Rosa Lee: A Generational Tale of Poverty and Survival in Urban America," is more than a story - it's a four-year journey into the heart of urban poverty. Dash didn't just interview his subjects; he lived among them, breathing the same air, facing the same daily struggles. He slept in cockroach-infested apartments, witnessed the cycle of addiction and despair firsthand, and saw how teenage pregnancy wasn't just a statistic, but a rite of passage for many. His work forces us to confront uncomfortable truths: that the American Dream is often just that - a dream - for those trapped in generational poverty. It challenges us to question our assumptions and to see the humanity in those society often overlooks. Leon Dash's work challenges us to look beyond our own experiences, to seek understanding in the stories of others, and to never stop questioning the world around us. In a time when division seems to be the norm, Dash's career reminds us of the importance of journalism that bridges gaps, challenges assumptions, and gives voice to the voiceless. His story isn't just inspiring - it's a call to action. It asks us to consider: What truths are we overlooking? Whose stories are we not hearing? And most importantly, what are we going to do about it? As you watch this interview, let Dash's words sink in. Let them challenge you, inspire you, and maybe even change you. Because in the end, that's what great journalism - and great lives - do. They show us the world as it is, and inspire us to make it better. 30 Apr 2024 | #42 - Charles Gammie: Capturing Black Hole Image, Astrophysics, and Interstellar | 02:20:57
Charles Gammie is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Born with an insatiable curiosity and a love for mathematics, Dr. Gammie's journey to the forefront of astrophysics was anything but ordinary. Despite initially having ambitions of becoming a lawyer, a serendipitous encounter with a wise advisor steered him toward statistics and physics. Little did he know, this fateful decision would set him on a path toward the cosmos, propelling him into the world of astrophysics and a PhD he never envisioned. Today, Dr. Gammie stands as a theoretical and computational astrophysicist whose research focuses on black holes, and the formation of stars, moons, and planets, where he has developed numerical methods for modeling relativistic plasmas, relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics, and radiative processes in hot plasmas. Notably, Dr. Gammie co-led the theoretical modeling efforts for the Event Horizon Telescope (ETH) project, enabling the interpretation of the EHT data and the groundbreaking first-ever image of a supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. This unprecedented collaboration across continents and disciplines showcased human ingenuity and the pursuit of knowledge. In this conversation, Dr. Gammie shared profound insights into black holes, their mechanics, spinning nature, and implications for understanding time and space. He also explored existential topics like extraterrestrial life and reconciling science with religious beliefs, offering inspiring advice for young minds to embrace curiosity and the unconventional. From the origins of "black holes" to the nature of time itself, this conversation was a captivating odyssey through the cosmos, guided by a brilliant scientific mind. This is The UIUC Talkshow, and this is our conversation with Dr. Charles Gammie. 31 Oct 2022 | #24 - Bruce Berndt: Srinivasa Ramanujan | 01:47:37
Bruce Berndt is a Mathematics professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who spent more than 40 years finding the proofs of Ramanujan's Notebooks. According to Academic Influence, Dr. Bernt is the 5th most influential mathematician. In this conversation, we talk to Dr. Berndt to find out how Ramanujan found him and how Dr. Berndt found Ramanujan. Srinivasa Ramanujan (aka The Man Who Knew Infinity) was the greatest Indian mathematician ever to have lived. His story is a story of obsessively following his curiosity and relentlessly pursuing what he loved. Why did Dr. Berndt spend more than 40 years proving every result of the notebook? Ramanujan didn't write the proofs. He was that great and had an absurd level of mathematical intuition. Ramanujan's story is unique because he had no formal math background and never finished college. He was humbly self-taught. He did not fit in because of his greatness, so the system pushed him out. Fortunately, Ramanujan found Hardy, an English mathematician who believed in him and helped him get out of the "system" to work on his mathematics. What if Hardy never replied? Comparably, this is the story of many other Ramanujan-like people around the world who get pushed to the side because of their inability to fit in the assembly line educational system. Obsession and curiosity over well-roundedness are how geniuses are made. Ramanujan's moving story and astonishing mathematics made Dr. Berndt spend almost fifty years of his life proving every result in Ramanujan's Notebooks. And why one of the best experiences of Dr. Bernt's life was holding Ramanujan's slate, where Ramanujan spent countless hours doing mathematics. Moreover, Dr. Berndt is one of the greatest analytic number theorists, and while he recently retired, he continues to do research, and most of it is, of course, motivated by Ramanujan's work. Needless to say, Dr. Berndt truly encompasses the philosophy of every UIUC Talkshow guest, people who are sane in a way most people are crazy. We hope you can be as inspired by this conversation as we were. 01 Oct 2022 | #21 - Neal Davis: Urbit, Sentience, and DAOs | 01:15:27
Neal Davis is a Computer Science Professor at UIUC and Urbit's director of developer experience. Since we started the UIUC Talkshow, we've said the show is about people who are sane in a way most people are crazy. Neal Davis is exactly one of them. It’s not surprise he believes we need to be weirder.
He started as a nuclear engineer but throughout his life, he's reflected on the definition of a "good and wise life." This led him to want to "elevate sentience" in his life and the life of others. A beautiful and unique pursuit. That philosophy guides the type of work he devotes himself to and that’s he how he found Urbit, an ambitious project to rebuild and rethink the internet from first principles. 20 Sep 2022 | #20 - Paul Kwiat: Quantum Information, Photons, and Swing Dancing | 01:28:40
Paul Kwiat is a Quantum Physics professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he focuses on quantum information. We all know there are people who are passionate about what they do but Dr. Kwiat is a "Summer Sunday Late-Night" level of passionate. We met Dr. Kwiat during LabEscape, the science-based escape room he created. During the summer, we were walking by the Physics Building (Loomis) on a Sunday night when we saw him carrying big and heavy boxes into his car. We stopped, said "Hi", and offered to help him. We talked for a bit and ten minutes later, we saw ourselves helping Dr. Kwiat get LabEscape ready for the State Fair. We already knew we wanted to have a conversation with him but this was our confirmation. What kind of professor would be working on a Sunday night by himself? That is when we realized he was sane in a way most people are crazy. In this conversation, we explore the foundations of light and move along to discover the mysteries and anomalies of photons, one of Dr. Kwiat's favorite topics to the point of owning three "photons." We start on a solid and fundamental ground to fully understand yet another mystery, quantum physics and its practical uses such as quantum computers and quantum communications. We all know Dr. Paul Kwiat is a professor but few people know that he is also a talented swing dancer (more on 1:21:44), and perhaps the secret twin of Ant-Man's Hank Pym. Physics, curiosity, and Dr. Kwiat's ability and patience to explain and have a unique conversation makes this a very special episode number 20. This is the UIUC Talkshow and this is our conversation with Dr. Paul Kwiat. 19 Oct 2022 | #22 - Yash Rathod: Dropping Out, Startups, and Religion | 02:36:31
Yash Rathod is a Computer Science student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The purpose of the UIUC Talkshow has been to meet interesting people, and we would not have met Yash if we hadn't started this project. We accomplish our mission every time we meet people like Yash and on every episode we have.
Yash is a striking individual who radiates a sense of soothing ambition. He shares excitement yet a sense of calmness as he shares his story of growing up in India, wanting to become a professional cricketer, and creating a startup.
We sit down with Yash to hear about his journey, with many stops to talk about religion, being underestimated, India's educational system, and the magic conversations with his uncle.
Yash shares the backstory of taking a gap year and pursuing his startup dream from the beginning to the end. A moving adventure with lots of uncertainty and enthusiasm. Yash indeed lives a life of zero "What ifs," and after he worked on his startup, he was now ready to come back and live the "college experience."
This conversation was remarkable in many ways, from the simple start of "Tell us about your life" to the longest conversation we've ever had. Even a past guest (https://youtu.be/8dYmTFg7-do) joined us.

27 Dec 2022 | #28 - Adrienne Antonson: A Journey Through Science, Art, and the Education System | 01:45:47
Adrienne Antonson is a Neuroscience and Animal Sciences professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she uses translational animal models to study the connections between inflammation, neurodevelopment, behavioral abnormalities, and mental health disorders. In this episode of the UIUC Talkshow, Dr. Antonson shares her experience of balancing her passions for art and science and the importance of breaking out of the traditional system to find one's own path. She also discusses the challenges and inefficiencies within the academic system, particularly for early career faculty and graduate students. We also discuss the flaws in the education system and the societal pressure on individuals to fit into specific career paths. Despite these challenges, Dr. Antonson remains committed to pushing the forefront of science and finding ways to improve the system for future generations. In a surprising twist, Dr. Antonson reveals her love for fine arts and her decision to study abroad in Milan, Italy, before ultimately returning to her scientific pursuits. The conversation concludes with Dr. Antonson sharing her thoughts on the modern learner, the consequences of inflammation in fetal neurodevelopment, and advice for young people looking to make a difference in the world. The episode was great because it was honest. We understood and learned about the many things that make Dr. Antonson a great professor besides her academics. We realized that we are all learning together and that no one is perfect. It's okay not to know what you want to do at an age most people associate with "success" and "growth"—taking your time to get to where you want to can be equally, if not more, rewarding. We shouldn't be afraid to try new things. Instead, we should take it as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and the world around us. If you can persevere, you can get anywhere you want to. Remember to have fun along the way! This is The UIUC Talkshow, and this episode is one of Aaryaman Patel's favorites. 16 Oct 2023 | #38 - Karrie Karahalios: Social Media, MIT, Algorithmic Control & Suing Government | 02:51:08
Karrie Karahalios is a Computer Science Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she conducts research on the impact of computer science on society, including areas like algorithmic auditing, community-centered computing, social media, and human-computer interaction. In a world often driven by haste and the urge to build for the sake of building, Dr. Karahalios stands out in her field, much like an oasis in a desert. She offers a refreshing perspective, advocating for more thoughtful approaches to technology and social tools. Her philosophy entails not rushing to construct colossal empires at the expense of societal well-being but, instead, taking measured steps to avoid the perils of recklessness. Dr. Karahalios explores the interaction between humans and technology from a viewpoint that transcends mere functionality and deeply considers the impact on individuals and communities. Her academic journey, from earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at MIT to her time in the MIT Media Lab, has uniquely equipped her to appreciate diverse perspectives and tackle complex problems. Her research stands as a testament to her dedication to deciphering the intricate dynamics of networked electronic spaces. Yet, she also takes on the role of a champion and a relentless fighter against the tyranny of algorithms that increasingly govern our lives. In this era, where social media platforms wield the power to control who can access and broadcast to the public, where medical devices operate on proprietary algorithms that render their outcomes unquestionable, and where algorithms can even make legal decisions within courtrooms, Dr. Karahalios's work takes on paramount significance. One of the significant and bold steps Dr. Karahalios has taken is suing the government to ensure that researchers can continue to investigate discrimination on the internet. Supported by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), their journey underscores the importance of pushing against self-helplessness and pursuing justice, even when the odds seem daunting. After the interview, we found ourselves in Dr. Karahalios's classes, not just for learning but for the inspiring post-class discussions. Dr. Karahalios, a fusion of brilliance and kindness, sets a remarkable example we hope others will follow. Her influence extends beyond academia, sparking our imaginations and guiding us to innovative projects. She embodies the future we aspire to create in technology and society. 24 Sep 2024 | #45 - Carla Scaletti & Kurt Hegel: Sonifying the Human Condition, WALL•E, and Kyma | 01:48:07
Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel are the founders of Symbolic Sound, creators of the Kyma Sound Design Environment. You may not have heard of the company or its founders, but you have definitely heard its products in films like WALL•E, The Dark Knight, Finding Nemo, games like World of Warcraft, Quake II, Mirror's Edge, and the music of A.R. Rahman. In this episode, Carla and Kurt take us behind the scenes, revealing their philosophy of being “toolmakers” for artists, musicians, and sound designers. They open up about their mission to create tools that enable people to push the boundaries of audio creativity. This conversation touches on the profound intersection of sound, science, and emotion. From the sonification of black holes to music’s power in conveying complex scientific ideas, Carla and Kurt challenge us to think differently about the role of sound in shaping our world. One of the standout themes is how music can transcend time—although it unfolds over time, listening to music can create a sensation of stepping outside of time altogether. Composers, like those using Kyma, can manipulate the flow of time, making it feel like it’s speeding up or slowing down, creating emotional arcs that resonate deeply with listeners. Carla and Kurt also discuss how sound shapes thought, arguing that people who study music think about time differently. In fact, they suggest music is a kind of sonification of the composer’s inner mental state. When we listen, we transpose that state onto ourselves, making music one of the most profoundly meaningful forms of human expression. They also talk about the human instinct for storytelling—just as visual art ranges from literal to abstract, so too can music, ranging from highly structured compositions to avant-garde soundscapes. Even in abstract forms, humans naturally find meaning by recognizing patterns and emotions within sound. This episode offers a rare glimpse into the minds of two innovators who have significantly influenced the field of sound design and music technology. It's a deep exploration of the philosophy of sound, the future of music, and life itself. This is our conversation with Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel, the brilliant minds behind Symbolic Sound Corporation and the Kyma Sound Design Environment. 14 Sep 2022 | #19 - Samuel Steiner: The Most Venezuelan Guy at UIUC | 01:29:59
Samuel Steiner is a Venezuelan civil engineering student from Maracaibo, Venezuela. We emphasize where Samuel is from twice because of his true unconditional and unmatched love for his country. This sentiment isn't just shallow nationalism. Rather it is a conviction that drives Samuel to a great length to become a civil engineer to rebuild Venezuela's broken infrastructure and become a student of history to avoid making the political mistakes of the past. This conviction easily makes Samuel Steiner one of the most, if not, the most Venezuelan student at UIUC. A "true Maracucho" as he would call himself. Aaryaman and Juan David sit down with Samuel to discuss topics such as balance and routine, ambition and scarcity, and the difficulty of making life decisions by going back in time to his favorite personal mistake of saying "No" to becoming a professional soccer player. Through it, they discuss regretting meeting Albert Einstein, talking to Marcos Pérez Jiménez, and a very impressive brief history of India. This is the UIUC Talkshow and this is our conversation with Samuel Steiner.
