The 2016 Boxed In study from the San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film reports that these trends continue today: 9 percent of male characters were portrayed as leaders, compared to only 5 percent of female characters. Ninety-one percent of shows across screen-based platforms employed no women directors, 76 percent had no women creators, and 71 percent no female writers.

TV comeback shows refer to television series that were cancelled or ended their initial run, but were later brought back for a new season or revival. These shows often aim to continue the storylines of beloved characters and appeal to audiences who enjoyed the original series.

There are a number of reasons why a TV show may be cancelled in the first place. Low ratings, high production costs, creative differences, and conflicts with network executives are just a few examples. However, if a show has a dedicated fan base, it may be possible to bring it back years later.

Some examples of TV comeback shows that were cancelled include:

1. "Arrested Development": This critically acclaimed sitcom was cancelled by Fox after three seasons due to low ratings. However, it was later revived by Netflix for a fourth season in 2013, and a fifth season was released in 2018.

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) and robots have been a popular theme in science fiction television shows for many years. These shows often explore the relationship between humans and machines, and the potential consequences of advanced technology. From the classic series of "The Jetsons" to the more recent show "Westworld", A.I. and robots have been portrayed in a variety of ways in TV.

One of the earliest portrayals of A.I. and robots on TV was in the 1960s series "The Jetsons". This cartoon depicted a futuristic society where robots were a common household item. The show presented a world where machines had taken over most of the manual labor, leaving humans to enjoy a life of leisure. This portrayal of A.I. and robots as helpful and subservient machines is still popular in some science fiction today.

Another popular show that explores the relationship between humans and robots is "Battlestar Galactica". This series depicts a future where robots have turned against their human creators, leading to a war for survival. Slowly but surely, TV shows are doing a better job at depicting the full scope of the varied LGBTQ+ experience. Things started out small, with series like Will & Grace and Glee revealing slices of queer identity. Now sitcoms, dramas, and everything in between have expanded that showcase, dedicating themselves to getting representation right.

But we didn’t get there overnight, and there’s still more work to be done. However, these 19 TV shows, below, did more than just move the dial forward when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation on screen. They broke down the doors, and we should celebrate that.
