10 Jan 2025“White Tongue” Thrush vs Tongue Tie: Episode 37300:19:53

What the heck is “white tongue”?

Tongue tied babies are often misdiagnosed with thrush, leading to unnecessary treatments.

In this episode of the Tongue Tie Experts Podcast, host Lisa Paladino, CNM, IBCLC, discusses the differences between thrush and tongue tie, focusing on the common symptom of a white tongue in infants. Tongue tied babies are often misdiagnosed with thrush, leading to unnecessary treatments.

Key Points:

  • White Tongue Overview: A white tongue can indicate thrush or tongue tie. Proper diagnosis is crucial to avoid unnecessary treatments.
  • Thrush Basics: Caused by a yeast infection (Candida), thrush presents as white patches in the mouth that don’t scrape off easily. It can cause feeding difficulties, diaper rash, and nipple pain in breastfeeding mothers.
  • Tongue Tie Basics: Tongue tie restricts tongue movement, leading to milk residue on the tongue, which may appear white but can usually be wiped off.
  • Differentiation: Thrush involves persistent white plaques, often with maternal symptoms. Tongue tie-related white tongue is typically milk residue that can be wiped away.
  • Advice for Professionals: Honest communication with parents is key. Ensure proper referrals and follow-ups.

15 Feb 2022Episode 4: Real life stories about tongue tie - Sarah's journey 00:39:10

The true experts on tongue tie are the parents - especially those who have struggled to find answers for their child's feeding challenges, and wind up learning so much that they can educate the providers who are supposed to be caring for them.

In this episode, Lisa interviews Sarah B. about her journey to feed her fourth child.

Sarah is a mom whose journey was difficult. As you'll hear in this episode, she was told by an MD that her daughter didn't have a tongue tie. Her daughter was having such struggles to feed, by breast and bottle,  that it took a feeding tube to rescue her. But still no one answered Sarah's question of why her daughter couldn't feed, until  at age 7 months when a lactation consultant pointed her in the right direction for functional assessment and release of tongue and lip tie.

It is my wish that by hearing stories such as Sarah's, families will feel heard, know they aren't alone, and be inspired to always search for answers.

It is a follow up to Episode #7 which featured Dr. Trillitye Paullin of Free to Feed, because so many questions came up after our talk that we wanted to explore.

Listen as Lisa explains why tongue tie and food allergy can be difficult to differentiate, which symptoms can be confusing and what to do if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

It's also the last episode of Season 1! Thanks so much for making our first season such a success. We will be back in a few weeks.

17 May 2022Season 2, Episode 3: Dr. Martin Rosen - The Safety and Efficacy of Chiropractic Care for Infants00:53:51

In this episode, Lisa interviews Dr. Martin Rosen, a chiropractor, author, lecturer and teacher, regarding the safety, efficacy, and advantages of chiropractic for infants and children, and the reasons why chiropractic is helpful for infants with tongue tie.

We discuss how infant symptoms such as tummy time difficulty, feeding challenges, and colic are signs that shouldn't be ignored, and how compensations that develop in the first year can affect the child's whole life.

Perhaps my favorite part of this discussion, was about how our healthcare system is normalizing dysfunction, as it becomes more common. Common does not equal normal.

24 May 2022Season 2, Episode 4: Parents as experts - Elyssa DeAlmeida 01:05:52

Listen as Elyssa describes her journey with nursing her daughter, Ophelia. From the beginning, Elyssa sensed that something wasn't right, but was told by multiple medical professionals that everything was "fine". It wasn't fine, and it took a mother's drive to provide nutrition for her daughter, overcoming obstacles, to set things on the right track.

Let's learn from this mom's story, because it's so similar to what I hear all of the time. Stories of families who believed their medical professionals understood breastfeeding management, and weren't guided to the right interventions. Breastfeeding parents need and deserve a complete evaluation from an IBCLC.

14 Jun 2022Season 2 Episode 7: Frenotomy with the least trauma for parent and baby00:34:25

Although frenotomy is considered a minor, quick procedure, it may be stressful. Being prepared keeps nerves calm and allows for a smoother experience.

As a lactation consultant, I have guided many families to and through the day of frenotomy.

In this episode, I share some key takeaways from this experience - such as questions to ask a provider before you trust them with your precious baby, what to have on hand for after, and how to feel the least trauma because you'll have the confidence that you are ready to handle any challenges that may arise.

Please note: Being prepared is multifaceted. During this episode, I discusses preparation for the actual day of the surgery. Of course, the prior step is being sure that the procedure is necessary.

19 Jul 2022Will tongue tie release fix all breastfeeding challenges? Episode 30200:18:18

How do we know if releasing the tongue or lip frenum will solve breastfeeding problems?

One of the most complex questions and, honestly, a dilemma, is when a parent asks me if they “should” have  their infant’s tongue or lip tie released, a procedure known as frenotomy. They want to know if it will be worth it, if it will solve the problems, if it is really going to make a difference for their infant. These are great and necessary questions. Sometimes I wish I had my crystal ball to see into the future for these families and tell them for sure.

But over the years, I have become better at discerning which infants will benefit the most. In this episode, I share you 4 aspects to consider, beyond the typical assessment checklist.

15 Nov 2022Real life stories about tongue tie - Sarah's journey: Special Encore Episode 31900:41:27

Today you'll hear about our gratitude sale:  Professional's Guide to Tongue Tie in the Breastfeeding Infant is half price for my birthday this year.

This week's episode features a warrior parent.

Dr. Victor Avis, and his daughter, Sydney Avis are asking us all to join The Airway Revolution

What is an Airway Revolution?

Are you tired? Snoring? Have allergies, crowded teeth, or heart disease? Overweight or anxious ? You may have an airway disorder, which can affect your health, reduce your quality of life, and your lifespan.

Sydney suffered with an airway disorder that was misdiagnosed for almost thirty years. Her journey, and the realization that this is a widespread problem, inspired her father, dentist Victor Avis, to establish the Airway Revolution Foundation: A non-profit organization with the mission to make you aware, inspire you to join, and lead a Revolution to battle airway disorders, so that the world can breathe a whole lot easier.

Lisa Paladino is an Advisory Board Member of the Airway Revolution Foundation and is excited to be included in the upcoming documentary alongside giants in our field.

This organization realizes the connection between tongue tie, breastfeeding success and airway formation and health.
