14 May 2024 | PHILLIP MCKNIGHT Part 2 (sort of) | 01:33:21
Once in a while the Patrons of this podcast tell me that one of the bonus episodes NEEDS to be released publicly, and when Phil McKnight came on late last year that happened again! I received a bunch of messages telling me that this bonus episode should NOT be behind closed doors, and if the Patrons ask I need to deliver.
If you aren't familiar with Phil, he is one of the most successful guitar gear content creators of our time, and has a wealth of knowledge about many aspects of this weird industry. You should definitely listen to his first appearance on the podcast. Just scroll back in your feed a bit, and it'll be there!
So here is the Patreon bonus episode with Phil, and we get down to business on this one. The business of guitar stores, the business of guitar YouTube, the business of guitar brands. You are going to dig it!

15 Apr 2024 | Is The Internet All Bad? w/ Matt of Mule Resophonic Guitars | 01:05:10
In this conversation, Blake and Matt Eich discuss the growth of Mule Resonator Guitars and the development of the Mavis guitar. (The first wooden Mule guitar build!) We explore the importance of unique sounds and the balance between innovation and expression in instrument design.
We also discuss the unique experience of building musical instruments and the emotional impact they have on people. They explore the feeling of creating something that becomes a tool for artistic expression and the responsibility that comes with it. They also delve into their shared interests outside of music, such as jujitsu and fly fishing, and the similarities in the flow state experienced in these activities. They emphasize the importance of being present and fully engaged in whatever they are doing. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the benefits and challenges of pursuing a passion full-time.

20 Nov 2023 | "I Don't Wanna Play Acoustic Guitar Dad..." w/ Spilly Cave | 01:01:24
Spilly Cave is a fantastic guitarist, composer, video creator, and as it turns out... an EXCELLENT conversationalist. I met Spilly (Billy) through him becoming a Stringjoy artist, and just loving the music he makes after I discovered it.
This dude spent multiple years posting videos EVERYDAY before he actually gained traction publicly, and we discuss his mindset/approach during that timeframe.
He's not a serious gear head, but he has developed a VERY unique sound nonetheless. I think you are going to be inspired by this conversation.

02 Jan 2023 | "I Thought I Was Dying" w/ Jo Braga of Pedal Playhouse | 01:08:45
Jo Braga is the insanely talented and very hard working creator behind the YouTube channel Pedal Playhouse. It is one of the most entertaining and unique viewing experiences in the guitar gear content world.
What started out as a very light and bouncy episode took a very unexpected turn when Jo told me her full story.
That said, her insane positivity and bubbly personality somehow still managed to generate laughs while we walked down a fairly dark path momentarily.
I think you'll really enjoy this episode, and please make sure to check out her work on her channel at this link:

29 Apr 2024 | Marcos Curiel of P.OD. (Yes, that P.O.D.) | 01:13:59
I imagine that you have probably heard a song called Youth Of A Nation? Well Marcos definitely gets into the story around that song!
We start off with a HEAVY dose of nostalgia with Blake telling the story of "P.O.D. on the Pepsi. box" and Marcos diving into some San Diego bands.
Marcos discusses the music scene and the diverse range of genres that have emerged from the city. He talks about the importance of creating a unique sound and vibe as a musician, drawing inspiration from bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Soundgarden. Marcos also emphasizes the need for musicians to be open-minded and experimental in their approach to music, and expresses his hope for a resurgence of originality in heavy music.
Marcos emphasizes the need for artists to take risks and follow their own vision, rather than simply imitating what is popular. But ALSO the blessing/curse combination that comes with having an original sound.
DJing, tube amps, songwriting, the role of producers, staying true to yourself, and a WHOLE lot more on this episode!

14 Apr 2021 | Brian Fallon & Chris Benson | 01:22:56
Hey, would ya look at that? Mr. Fallon and Mr. Benson are back on the podcast for another episode of total nerdery and Dad-like speculation about the weather and housing market.
This was a very special episode spurred on by Brian, and I'm so glad he had the idea. This was an absolute blast. Enjoy!
Check out Brian's music right HERE or wherever you get your tunes. In addition to his solo work, he was also part of a little thing called The Gaslight Anthem. You may be familiar, and if your aren't you should go ahead and get familiar.
You know I have much love for Chris's work, but if that has somehow escaped you. check out his amplifiers at Bensonamps.com

17 Mar 2025 | Pete Steinkopf of The Bouncing Souls | 00:59:26
The Bouncing Souls are an iconic melodic punk band from New Jersey. They are a personal favorite of mine and have been for over 20 years.
Pete is also the owner of what I consider to be one of the raddest guitars in music history. It is a 1979 White Les Paul Custom that has the most iconic legit playwear that I have ever seen!
We talk about that and a lot of other stuff like:
The early days of the Bouncing Souls
Recording music is a collaborative process that requires understanding the dynamics of the band.
Aspiring musicians should focus on DIY methods to build their careers before seeking label support.
The music industry has changed drastically, making it easier for artists to promote themselves independently.
Finding the right label is crucial; artists should seek those who genuinely support their vision.
Touring experiences evolve with age, shifting from wild adventures to more family-oriented approaches.
The importance of building relationships and trust in the music industry cannot be overstated.
Simple gear setups can often yield the best results in live performances.
Nostalgia plays a big role in music culture.
Modern touring vs 90s touring
"Rock dad" life
Punk rock was a significant turning point for many musicians.
Punkorama CDs were crucial for discovering new music.
Epitaph Records played a vital role in the punk scene.

12 Sep 2022 | Working For Free w/ Ian Martin Allison Main | 01:10:10
Ian Martin Allison is a bassist. And not just any bassist, this dude is an absolute MONSTER on the instrument. Ever since he was first "forced" into the roll of commanding the low end, he developed a true passion for the instrument that is nearly impossible to match.
Ian has performed countless times in a wide variety of situations, but as far as The Internet is concerned he is most closely associated with the widely acclaimed channel Scott's Bass Lessons. He has also produced a ton of content on his own, which can mostly be found on his Instagram page. Give him a follow HERE and you will be very glad you did!
If you don't know Scott's Bass Lessons, you really should. Even if you are a guitarist like myself. It's a pretty incredible resource. Scott's website is HERE and the YouTube channel is HERE.

24 Feb 2025 | "The Broken Bottle Beatdown" w/ Rev. Peyton | 01:28:34
WOW. That is first word that came to mind when I went to write this episode description because this episode is AWESOME.
Reverend Peyton is well known as a master of slide guitar and country-blues style music. But the man is quite simply a guitar and music obsessive. You are going to love this episode.
We talk about things like:
A brawl that involved Fletcher from Pennywise, Alesana, and a half-blind Reverend Peyton. (You need to hear this story!)
The "vocal" quality that is unique to guitar.
Nirvana and "being yourself"
The scary circumstances that lead Rev. to the slide
The unique challenges that came with Warped Tour
The benefits of learning by ear
Becoming uniquely your own by "copying" others
A WHOLE LOT MORE!

07 Jul 2023 | Paul Reed Smith Tried To Escape This Interview (But I Wouldn't Let Him!) | 00:34:21
Way back in 2016 when I was very new to podcasting and being a part of the guitar world, I attended my first Winter NAMM show.
The very first thing I did was march up to the PRS Guitars booth to have an interview with none other than Paul Reed Smith himself.
This was all orchestrated by my friend Ryan Burke from the now infamous YouTube channel @60CycleHumCast . What proceeded was an extremely fun conversation that the internet didn't seem to understand at all.
So when Ryan and I found out that Paul was going to be at Sweetwater's Gearfest this year, we thought it would be fun to do an update!
Here is that update. Enjoy!

28 Dec 2022 | You Can't Poop On A Tour Bus?! (Dewey of The Peer Pleasure Podcast) | 01:59:45
On this very special video episode of the podcast I invited my friend Dewey Halpaus of The Peer Pleasure Podcast to the Shred Shed for a TWO HOUR conversation of epic proportions.
We intended on this being a recap of our podcast lives in 2022, and we definitely got into how things are changing for his podcast, as well as my own. Including a new effort focused on YouTube for me!
The chat included a discussion of my ever evolving role at Stringjoy, what it is like being a podcaster, and like the title says... How you cannot go poop on a tour bus. Which is something that I was not aware of...
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Please make sure you check out Dewey's show on his website, or wherever you get your podcasts.

26 Jun 2023 | From 'War Dogs' to Guitar Pedals w/ David Packouz of Singular Sound | 01:28:55
Not very many people get into international arms dealing, get busted by the Government, have a BIG Hollywood movie made about their life, and THEN start a successful effects pedal company.
But that is exactly what happened to David Packouz of Singular Sound.
You may have heard about David from the Todd Phillips directed film 'War Dogs' (starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) or possibly his company's most famous product The Beat Buddy.

09 Jan 2023 | Journey Through Gear w/ Steve Pedulla of Thursday | 01:05:03
Thursday is an absolutely incredible and influential band so you can imagine how excited I was to sit down and talk with guitarist Steve Pedulla for this very special episode of the podcast.
On this episode we dive into Steve's gear journey in a very extensive way. Starting with his Gibson SG, and landing in Telecaster land. We really went down the rabbit hole of his guitar pedal choices, his digital/tube based hybrid rig of today, and a whole lot more.
This episode is a must for any Thursday fan, and if you aren't familiar, you can check out the band on their website https://www.thursday.net/

05 Aug 2024 | REAL Amp Superiority w/ Mike Cunniff of Boston Manor | 01:11:05
Gear, gear and MOAR GEAR talk on this episode.
Mike and I dive into his journey from a biomedical professional to full time musician in popular rock act, Boston Manor. It's a more sudden change in fields than I would have expected!
After that we dive immediately into the pedalboard, why he believes he'll always play genuine tube amplifiers (though we do touch on the digital modeling world as well). Marshall, Gibson, Fender, Meris, Ibanez 7 series, and of course BOSS are all gushed about on this episode quite extensively.
You might just learn something!

06 Feb 2023 | Grown Adults Arguing About Toys w/ David of Browne Amplification | 01:12:20
Browne Amplification has really blown up in the last few years. Thanks in large part to The Protein Dual Overdrive Pedal.
On this episode we discuss how Josh Scott (of JHS Pedals) convinced him to give surface mount components a try in his guitar pedals, germanium transistors, how he was able to make the leap from touring tech to owning a manufacturing operation, the perils of operating a small business, and a whole litany of other things.

28 Mar 2022 | THE CROOK w/ Jordan Withers of Poison Noises | 01:07:25
Jordan is one of the dudes behind Poison Noises, a relatively new company in the pedal world that is gaining favor with a lot of my personal favorite bands. They've also found favor with the crew of Josh Scott's JHS Show. Jordan and I had chatted a bit on the interwebz and I thought that he would be a great guest for the podcast, so here we are! Enjoy the show folks!

08 Jan 2024 | Germanium INSANITY w/ Richard of Wampler Pedals | 01:10:54
Klon. There are few words in the guitar world that will get guitarists clamoring, foaming at the mouth, or shouting hysterically like the word Klon. (I'll let you decide if that is a negative or a positive in your own mind.)
So much so that even the best clones of the legendary circuit can send folks right into a frenzy. And if those clones are using some of the same hard-to-source components as the original? Well, people lose their almost as hard as they do over an original!
My buddies over at Wampler Pedals had just that happen at the end of last year with the Germanium Tumnus release, and I invited my buddy/co-host Richard Oliver (a man of many hats at Wampler) on the podcast to discuss just that.
Let's get into it!
