21 Jul 2022Dean Koontz, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Big Dark Sky01:14:39

Today, marks a milestone in the history of this podcast; actually, it's two fold. First, I'm proud to introduce you to Year #2, aka Season 3, and Episode #78 of The Thriller Zone. Second, I am honored to welcome one of the genuine legends in the literary world, Mr. Dean Koontz.

I, like you, have been following him for decades, and have been amazed at his prolific output of one terrific suspense thriller after another. For nearly 6 decades, Dean has been crafting suspense novels that incorporate horror, fantasy, science fiction, and mystery, making him one of the most well-known, most prolific, and most highly regarded writers of this generation.

And the amazing thing? At 77, he shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. In fact, with a work ethic that plants him in a chair and behind a keyboard for 8 to 10 hours a day, six, and often seven days a week, Koontz is the quintessential example of the "hardest working writer" today.

This podcast not only marks our Second Year on the charts, but this episode marks one of the highlights of my interviewing career. And as you'll see in the show, I find myself "geeking out" just a little bit. But then, having admired his body of work from afar for as long as I've been alive, it's not a hard thing to imagine.

Please join me as we talk about Dean's "Magic Sauce" to crafting thrillers; listen as he shares stories that date back decades ago, to a time when writing thrillers was just beginning to gain particular traction; and take away some sage advice from a master who has spent his entire career perfecting his craft.

As he says early on, he was suffering a bit of laryngitis, so it may be a wee bit hard to hear him from time to time, but trust me when I say I've done pretty much everything in my power to craft and tweak the audio to the best of my ability. Special thanks to: Auphonics.com for their assistance.

Don't forget to stay until the end. Why? You get a chance to WIN a FREE copy of his latest thriller: The Big Dark Sky. Just follow the three easy steps, and we'll announce the winner shortly.

For more information visit: DeanKoontz.com and follow him on Twitter @deankoontz and Instagram @deankoontzofficial.

31 May 2023Matthew Quirk author of Inside Threat00:54:28

On today's 136th episode of The Thriller Zone, we welcome Matthew Quirk, the brains behind Netflix's smash series #TheNightAgent, and his latest ripped-from-the-headlines #politicalthriller INSIDE THREAT.

Matt is an engaging, intelligent, and hilarious man with intrigue, life stories, and jokes to spare. He's easily one of the finest writers of this generation.

Michael Connelly says of The Night Agent, "This is one of the best thrillers to come along in years."

Lee Child echoes with, " Stay-up-late suspense wrapped around a meaty and timely story."

Praised by many more top-shelf authors, Matt has a solid stable of work behind him, to include: Red Warning, Hour of the Assassin, The Night Agent, Dead Man Switch, Cold Barrel Zero, The Directive, and The 500.

His latest Inside Threat has it ALL...
Questionable Good guys
Enough romance to get you bothered
Enough Surprises to keep you engaged
A classic “bad couple” who provide plenty of DRAMA
A classic thriller that provides plenty of ACTION
And even manages a surprising & unexpected twist!
If you're looking to become a Matt Quirk fan, start with INSIDE THREAT, then read THE NIGHT AGENT--upon which the Netflix series is based, then consider my personal fave, HOUR OF THE ASSASSIN.

Either way, once you start, I have a feeling you'll dig deep into his library. In the meantime, check out all he's talking about on his website: MatthewQuirk.com and follow him on Twitter @mquirk.

18 Jan 2023Brad Taylor, New York Times Bestselling Author with The Devil’s Ransom01:04:48

On today's 115th Episode of an all new season of The Thriller Zone, I'm stoked and honored to welcome New York Times Bestselling author, Brad Taylor.

I've been trying to get Brad on The TZ for a long time now, and finally our stars and paths and chicken bones all crossed and connected. And just in the nick of time, as his latest military-flavored thriller, The Devil's Ransom, drops on Tuesday, January 24th.

What perfect timing, right? Brad helps me (a) Kick off a New Year, (b) he officially launches our 4th Season, and (c) we get to compare notes on BBQ, Best Beaches in the country, Texas vs South Carolina (in the fight for Southern Supremacy-ish), and (d) we get the INSIDE SCOOP on where he gets some of the nicknames of his NYT bestselling series.

If you'd like to pre-order a copy today, I'll provide a link at the bottom of this page. And trust me, if you're a PIKE LOGAN fan (his lead guy), you'll snatch this puppy up in a blink!

If you're not familiar with Brad, here's bit of nifty background: Brad Taylor was born on Okinawa, Japan, but grew up on 40-acres in rural Texas. Graduating from the University of Texas, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry, where he served for more than 21 years, retiring as a Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. During his service, he held numerous Infantry and Special Forces positions, including eight years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta, where he commanded multiple troops and a squadron. Finally, he has conducted operations in support of US national interests in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other classified locations.

Now, just a few things you will hear in the show that I think it's worth noting for future, deeper consideration. Several of them are as follows:

Charleston, South Carolina is a mighty fine city. And worth visiting if you ever get a chance.

Folly Beach is quite possibly one of the nicest beaches on the East Coast.

Mount Pleasant is just as its name states: a pleasant place to live (although there are no mountains in the area).

Lewis Barbecue is one helluva restaurant. It's Texas style, and created by the owner, founder, and master of BBQ, John Lewis. John never cuts corners, unless you’re talking about burnt ends of, course. The pit master’s cult-like following can be attributed to his unerring dedication to barbecue, from welding his own custom-designed smokers to waking up at 4 a.m. to tend to the fire, he takes his meat seriously. Barbecue enthusiasts have flocked to his pits for years, waiting in long lines to get a taste of his expertly smoked pork spareribs, beef ribs, “Texas hot guts” sausage, oxtail, and his legendary beef brisket.

You can stop in and enjoy (but forget reservations) here: 464 N Nassau St, Charleston, SC 29403. Call ahead to see if they have a spot: +1 843 805 9500, but go anyway.

Also, if you're an aspiring writer like me, or a seasoned professional like Brad T, you need a rock-solid, -kicking, and super- website. As you'll hear in the show, we're both fans of the dudes & gals over at Authorbytes.com who built, manage and support our sites.

Brad's is: BradTaylorBooks.com. Mine is: DavidTempleBooks.com. You can follow BT on Twitter @bradtaylorbooks and DT @thethrillerzone

Lastly, if you want to buy Brad's THE DEVILS RANSOM, CLICK HERE. I don't get anything from this, I just believe in his talents.

Perhaps in the (near) future, Amazon will bless me with some kind commissions, but they will NEVER come out of YOUR pocket. So there!

On today’s 178th episode of The Thriller Zone, David Temple and Scott Carson, author of Lost Man's Lane, discusses his writing process and the importance of voice in storytelling. He shares his experience working with a private investigator and how it influenced his latest novel.

Carson also talks about the power of face-to-face interviews and the impact of feedback on the writing process.

Scott offers advice to aspiring writers, emphasizing the importance of reading widely and keeping goals close to the vest. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the magic of voice and the thrill of having respected authors read and praise your work.

Takeaways

  • Using a pen name can help differentiate between different genres and target specific readerships.
  • Supernatural stories can be challenging to write well and appeal to skeptics, but the satisfaction of success is greater.
  • Readers often have preferences for certain genres and may be more open to different types of stories within those genres.
  • As a writer, it's important to challenge yourself and try new things to continue growing and producing your best work.
  • Building a connection with readers is crucial, and they will follow you across genres if they enjoy your writing style and storytelling.
  • The importance of having fun and taking risks in life and art
  • The power of voice in writing and the uniqueness each writer brings
  • The value of reading widely to improve writing skills
  • The benefits of keeping writing goals private and avoiding early feedback

Sound Bites

  • "The supernatural stories are by far the more difficult ones for me. But the satisfaction of sticking the landing is maybe a little bit greater."
  • "I don't think you're ever going to get your best work by staying in the familiar. It's going out there and getting a little bit dangerous."
  • "We only get one crack at this life. So why don't we just have fun with it?"
  • "The thing that makes your heart beat a little faster, whatever your emotional cues and triggers are, those are going to still be there no matter how different the story world might be."
  • "Write the first draft with the door shut.”
  • "Voice is the magic, the thing that makes it work."
  • "Read widely because it's all grist for the mill."

05 May 2022Joshua Hood, author of The Treadstone Transgression01:27:28

When you meet Josh, aka @joshuahoodbooks, you don't initially know if he's angry, super-focused, or thinking about something else. Then, as you unwrap the conversation, you'll see he's a thoughtful, introspective, and guy who has a mad talent to write.

On Episode #64 of The Thriller Zone, I'm happy to spend a bit over an hour speaking with this driven, opinionated, and (again) talented young man.

He's served his country in the 82nd Airborne, as a sniper team leader on a SWAT Team in Memphis, he's been awarded the lifesaving medal for an act of heroism in the face of danger, and when he's not doing all that...he's tending to his young son Jake, and daughter Marlow.

Do me a favor; heck, do us both a favor, and carve out an hour to hear Josh's thoughts on what it takes to craft a successful writing career, and what it was like to be offered the job of writing a Robert Ludlum book, carrying on the legacy of one of the greatest thriller writers in the world.

But most impressive? Could be the discussions on his observations on the mind's ability to adapt to change, the topic of "neuroplasticity," what he reads in his spare time (when not writing thrillers), and what his protagonist ADAM HAYES is doing in his latest thriller, THE TREADSTONE TRANSGRESSION...as well as what he's got up his "tatted sleeves" next!

08 Aug 2022Eli Cranor, author of Don’t Know Tough00:58:24

On today's 83rd Episode of The Thriller Zone, special debut author Eli Cranor stops by to chew the fat about his debut runaway hit, "Don't Know Tough."

From one Southern boy to another, this dude gets it right, on so many levels. The feeling of the deep south, the characters who play in that world, and a heart-wrenching story about the not-so-small world of high school football in a small southern town.

As author Ace Atkins says, "Eli knows the underbelly of Friday night lights in this stunning debut that bleeds authenticity and raw emotion."

Eli has walked the walk, by both playing and coaching football, and even today, teaches high-schoolers what it means to live and learn and win in life.

I think you'll appreciate the laidback demeanor of my guest, and the insights he brings as a debut author to the world of publishing. You'll also get an "inside peek" into his "special writing space," how he entertains his kids (and pets), and just how much he loves the craft of storytelling.

04 Mar 2024Mark Greaney: The Chaos Agent00:52:30

On today's 171st episode of The Thriller Zone, New York Times Bestselling author Mark Greaney discusses his latest book, The Chaos Agent.

As Mark and I catch up, we reminisce about our previous interactions, as he explains his decision to incorporate the slow burn and tension in his latest thriller that allows readers to delve deeper into the protagonist's character.

We also delve into the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and its influence on the story, as Greaney expresses his concerns about the potential dangers of AI, particularly in the development of lethal autonomous weapons. We also touch on the impact of AI on the writing community and the portrayal of the protagonist in a potential movie adaptation.

Later in the show, Mark discusses various aspects of his writing career, The Grey Man Series, and the vulnerability of his protagonist and the importance of creating a story that is interesting and keeps readers engaged.

As we close, Mark also shares insights into the future of The Grey Man series and the challenges of his being a busy writer. Greaney also emphasizes the role of a good editor (like Tom Colgan), and the influence of other writers on his work.

We conclude with a discussion about Mark's early burgeoning career as a "hopeful rock star" in his band BAD ENGLISH, where he played drums and wore very large permed hair. As always, we close with Mark's best writing advice, before we have Mark answer some fun Random Fire Questions, one of our favorite games.

01 Apr 2024Don Winslow, New York Times Bestselling Author of City In Ruins01:11:19

On today’s 175th Episode of The Thriller Zone, now in our 6th Season, we’re happy to invite Don Winslow into our home for a face-to-face interview that, as you’ll quickly notice, is truly a one of a kind opportunity for this host, and for you as an audience member.

Don, as you may know, is a renowned thriller writer who has decades of experience as a seasoned writer, creating one hit after another. Today, Don discusses his journey as an author and the challenges he faced in the publishing industry.

Despite initial rejections and being labeled a cult writer, Winslow persevered and eventually achieved success. He credits his partnership with agent Shane Salerno as a turning point in his career. Together, they started a rebellion against the limitations imposed by publishers and Hollywood.

In our in-depth conversation, Winslow reflects on the impact of his mother, a librarian, who instilled in him a love for books and the belief that he could achieve anything. He also shares his thoughts on retirement and the future of the publishing industry.

Digging deeper and opening up, Don reveals the evolution of storytelling and the impact of technology and AI on the industry. He emphasizes the authenticity of human communication and the importance of bringing heart and soul to writing.

As our show begins to wrap, Don allows us an inside peek, as he shares advice for aspiring writers, encouraging them to never give up and set doable writing goals. He reflects on the emotional impact of his City Trilogy, which includes City On Fire, City Of Dreams and City In Ruins, as well as the upcoming film adaptation, and concludes by discussing his future plans, including his commitment to fighting against neo-fascism and—on a much lighter note—spending more time with his wife, Jean.

All in all, this will stand out as one of the very finest episodes of The Thriller Zone since I launched the podcast nearly three years ago. I’m your host, David Temple, now let’s meet the man of the hour, my friend Don Winslow here in TheThrillerZone.com

On today's 124th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm thrilled to welcome William "Bill" Landay, author of All That Is Mine I Carry With Me.

I was first introduced to Bill as the creator of "Defending Jacob," the episodic series on Apple+ starring Chris Evans, Michelle Dockery, and Jaeden Martell. Yes, Don joins The TZ for a healthy round of information dispersal, intriguing conversation about the military, epic thrillers, the Tom Clancy legacy, his masterful editor Tom Colgan, and so much more.

Sure, we cover his Matt Drake Series, which includes: #WithoutSanction, #TheOutsideMan, and #HostileIntent, but we also drill into his Tom Clancy thrillers, #TargetAcquired and his latest, #ZeroHour. We also talk writing tools, ball-caps vs. Stetsons, Cowboy boots, ribs 'n beer, guns 'n knives, helicopters and vacation spots.

That's right, you can't get this sort of entertainment just ANYwhere!

Don also sheds some healthy insights and pearls of wisdom about what it takes to make it as a successful writer today. "You have to know and respect the business," Don says. "Because if you don't give the audience what they want, you'll have a tough time selling your books."

When Don quotes the world-famous Stephen King, and shares King's take on "the blue collar part and the magic part" of successful writing, well I, along with most all my friends whom are writers, perked up and listened to the promo on Twitter that provided a sneak peek into what was to come on today's show.

Bentley was premiered on my show last August ('21), and I'm thrilled to have him back. Side note, THIS Don Bentley has seasoned and grown wiser with age (and page count), and I for one just lapped up his words-of-wisdom; as I'm sure you will too.

Kick back and enjoy our talk about #ThrillerFest and the magic of #writingcommunity and attending #writingconferences, as well as practices you can incorporate into your work every day.

Lastly, we do our fair amount of name dropping; not to impress you, but to simply share some of the insights of those whom have led the way. They include: Mark Greaney, Nick Petrie, Don Winslow, Brad Taylor, Andrews & Wilson, Chris Hauty, Eric Bishop & Steve Stratton, to name a few.

If you'd like to dig deeper, and perhaps pick up one (or more) of Don's books, go to: DonBentleyBooks.com, and be sure to FOLLOW him on both Twitter & Facebook @bentleydonb.

And as always, I thank you for listening to our podcast on TheThrillerZone.com, or any and all the places you enjoy your podcasts. Follow us on Twitter & Instagram @thethrillerzone, and of course subscribe to our YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/TheThrillerZone.

On today's 147th episode of The Thriller Zone, I could not be more stoked to welcome the legendary Hollywood Writer/Producer and New York Times Bestselling Author Lee Goldberg.

There are talented guys who aren't always nice. And there are nice guys who aren't always talented. Then you meet someone like Lee who is both super talented and couldn't be nicer.

Bonus? He has some of the best writing advice to offer our audience yet. Sure, some of it you've heard before. And yes, a couple of points make you say, "Well, of course." But I would challenge you to dig deep, do your homework, LISTEN to his advice, INCORPORATE it into your own mind and writing. Then sit back and watch your quality SOAR.

Lee and I chat about "The Hollywood Machine," especially as it pertains to the current WGA writer's strike, what makes Hollywood tick, where some of those people on the inside are out of their minds because they're missing the point, not to mention the fact that GREED still continues to run the machine of Hollywood.

Trust me, this is one of the very best and most insightful podcasts since this show's launch. It's well worth the investment of an hour and change. If you'd like to learn more visit: LeeGoldberg.com

10 Mar 2022Jeffery Deaver, International New York Times Bestselling Author01:43:31

For many, our special guest today needs no introduction. He's an International Bestseller, and he's a New York Times Bestselling Author, several times over.

He has FIVE different series of books, to include: The Lincoln Rhymes Series, The Colter Shaw Series, The Kathryn Dance Series, The Rune Series, and The John Pellam Series.

Yes, today's guest is the one and only, Jeffery Deaver.

As you'll soon hear, I'm pretty geeked out to have Jeffery on the show. Why?

Because I, probably like you, are a huge fan. Not only does he have 45 books to his credit, but he has films--recall The Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington & Angelina Jolie? Plus, there's television shows in the making.

When you have the chance to learn from one of the most prolific authors working today, I can't imagine your not wanting to listen, and perhaps even to take notes. After all, spending time with Jeff is like taking a crash course in thriller writing.

There's a LOT to cover in this nearly 2 hour episode, so I'll stop writing and get to listening. Thank you for joining us on today's 51st Episode of The Thriller Zone.

30 Dec 2021Tammy Temple hosts our 2021 Countdown01:02:41

On today’s 38th Episode of The Thriller Zone, I welcome Special Guest Tammy Temple to co-host the show with me. Tammy is the Estate Manager for N4FL Worldwide, and one-half of The Dave & Tammy Tour Podcast (currently on hiatus but rumored to return in '22).

Tammy joins the podcast to discuss The Thriller Zone's Top Thriller TV Series, Movies, and of course, Books of 2021. Some of them you’ll expect, some you may not.

As for TV Series, there were some doozies. And books? There were so many, it's been super tough narrowing it down to only 10; however, there should have been Top 36 or so, as I've been a reading maniac since launching the podcast in June.

In between, we’ll chat about some of the talented craftsmen and women who have strongly influenced our lives, both in entertainment, as well as personally. Many of you know who you are.

By the end of the show, you’ll gain insights as to the “Movers & Shakers” we’ve come to admire, as well as the people we’re keeping our eyes whom we think will make significant strides in the New Year.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better co-host than my awesome wife to make this final show of the year, one of the very best!

Once again, it’s time to Get In The Thriller Zone!

What I like best about Kelly is what you see is what you get. I've always been drawn to people who are real and don't put on airs. She's the real deal, and I have a very solid feeling that she'll do just fine in this writing world.

Listen to about halfway through, as she allows me to read the opening of her book. It's beautiful, poetic, and although somber, has real visceral feelings inside.

Then, along about 3/4 of the way in, we start talking about her influences. And there are many. We also cover her best writing advice; again, something any aspiring writer should hear.

In the end, it feels like we'd known one another for decades. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one day we'll gather around a campfire, along with a few bottles of wine (or a handful of gummies), and tell some tall tales.

Take an hour, kick your shoes off, and rest a spell, while you listen to two new friends have a bit of fun chatting. To learn more about Kelly, visit: KellyJFord.com and follow her on Twitter @Kelly_J_Ford

20 Mar 2025Ryan Steck puts his heart into writing MONARCH for Ted Bell's legacy00:45:23

On today's 218th episode of The Thriller Zone with Dave Temple, we're diving into the heart of thriller fiction as we chat with Ryan Steck, The Real Book Spy, and Byrdie Bell, the daughter of the late Ted Bell, a New York Times Bestselling author.

We launch discussing "Monarch," the new thriller penned by Steck which respects the legacy of Ted’s iconic Alex Hawke series. I for one, feel it's a deeply emotional ride filled with heartfelt moments and behind-the-scenes stories that’ll give you the goosebumps.

Sure, we hit a few tech (video) snags at the start—who doesn’t love a good tech hiccup? But don’t worry, we’ve got all the juicy audio goodness for you to enjoy. Plus, we sprinkle in some classic clips of Ted himself, because who doesn’t want to hear from the master?

I trust you'll enjoy as we navigate the emotional landscape of Ted's legacy. Ted became a sincere friend in such a short time, and Ryan, who penned the latest Alex Hawke thriller, 'Monarch', echoes the fondness we share of a man who genuinely brought light to this world.

One thing I particularly like is when Ryan shares his intimate journey of channeling Ted's voice while crafting a new chapter for this beloved character.

An added bonus is when Byrdie offers a heartfelt glimpse into her father's storytelling genius, recalling cherished childhood memories filled with his animated storytelling and the creation of fantastical worlds.

All together, we explore the intricacies of preserving a literary legacy while infusing fresh narratives that resonate with both new and longtime fans.

24 Feb 2023Rick Bleiweiss, author of Murder In Haxford00:56:47

On today's 123rd Episode, we meet Mystery writer Rick Bleiweiss to talk about his much expected "Murder in Haxford," another Pignon Scorbion Mystery.

Today is a Bonus Episode, which means there will be bonus material on the show. Sure, we talk about the book, which is a delightful read, and is reminiscent of Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot.

But we also go off on several tangents that include epigenetics (the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work), aging (and ways to keep that at bay), we discuss the music industry, a career in which Rick enjoyed an illustrious and successful career, and our mutual fondness for the PBS Show, All Creatures Great and Small.

We also skim across the top of several other topics that are near and dear to both of our hearts. You see, Rick and I have become fast friends, and find ourselves talking off camera (and on phone), more than most podcast/guests do.

As you'll quickly see, we're friends, and enjoy one another's company. So, grab a coffee, a tea, or something stronger, and kick back to enjoy an old-fashioned good time.

Hello, and welcome to yet another edition of The Thriller Zone; Episode 22 to be exact, where my special guest is Sean O’Rourke, a Cyber Liability Consultant in New York.

Sean is also a close friend and avid Thriller movie lover—one of the reasons I asked him to join me to launch a new part of our show where we discuss the best thriller tv shows, and in today’s case, movies.

Yes, we’re taking a slight detour today by having someone on who isn’t a thriller writer, but as I mentioned, we will be talking about our top ten favorite thriller films. More on that in a bit. Today’s talk is about Cyber security and the perils that await companies—as well as you and me.

Oh, I wanted to share a quick thank you to all our new friends joining the show. According to our latest data, we have friends listening literally all over the world.

In fact, would you do me a quick favor and drop me a note to let me know what city and state or even country where you hear us? Do that and I’ll give a shout out on our next show. Our email is: TheThrillerZone@gmail.com

29 Dec 2022The Dave & Tammy Top 10 Year End Extravaganza01:12:38

On today's 113th Episode of The Thriller Zone, we celebrate 2022 with THE DAVE & TAMMY TOP 10 YEAR END EXTRAVAGANZA!

Today’s show is extra fun because I get to spend it with my beautiful and talented wife, Tammy. By the way, it just so happens we’ll be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary tomorrow; so, there's an extra reason to celebrate.

Our show will highlight some of the very best entertainment we’ve enjoyed this past year. That includes our “Top 10 Favorite Books, TV Series and Movies of ’22."

And before you get butt-hurt you didn’t make the list, no need to worry because many of the 50-to-60 (or so) guests this past year didn’t make it either. I say 50 to 60 only because there were times I hosted 2 episodes a week, while at others, there may have been only one. Either way, there’s plenty of entertainment to go around, so let's have FUN!

Also, while Tammy and I certainly have different tastes, we share a good many favorites, mainly because we devour so much entertainment together on any day, night or weekend.

There are so many people to thank for making this show possible, mainly because YOU, my faithful listener and/or viewer. Without YOU there on the other end of this microphone, well, frankly, I’d just be talking to myself. So, thank you.

Also, I want to say thanks for all the 5-star reviews you’ve given The Thriller Zone over the past year, either by ApplePodcasts, Spotify, directly on our website, TheThrillerZone.com, or any other podcast listening space.

Again, thank you, the kind words mean a lot and let us know we’re being enjoyed all around the world.

19 May 2022May Cobb, author of My Summer Darlings00:47:53

May Cobb was my Guest #1 on The Thriller Zone, when we launched in mid-June of last year ('21). The book she was promoting at the time was The Hunting Wives, a sultry and intoxicating thriller.

My Summer Darlings is another summertime scorcher, where the temps, like the libidos of three suburban gals, rise to a crescendo amidst the backdrop of suburban Texas.

On today's 66th Episode, we discuss a good many things, including the launch of her Texas-wide Book Tour, we dissect the "Multi-POV" of her thriller, as well as discuss her thoughts on "Pantsing vs. Plotting" - a reference to an author who "writes by the seat of their pants, or one that plots the beats into an extensive outline for a more cohesive structure."

Later in the show, May discusses , romance, , adultery, and oh, . On a more serious note, we discuss her thoughts on "higher education," and whether or not it's needed.

We touch on a mutually favorite book by Stephen King called "On Writing," a book many readers and writers in our audience have either read, or certainly have placed in their TBR stack. It's certainly in my Top 20 favorite (non-fiction) books of all time.

Perhaps one of my favorite moments comes when May shares her best piece of advice for would-be writers. "Writing in the stolen moments" is a terrific encouragement to those who think they need hours upon hours (in a non-stop fashion) in order to achieve a completed manuscript.

I think it's safe to say one of May's favorite moments comes when she imagines what her "antagonist" Will Harding would look like; that is, if she were to have a hand in casting him for the potentially upcoming television series (hey, a girl can dream, can't she?). Hint: Alexander Skarsgård.

Please make some time to get to know May if you don't already, and of course, please consider picking up a copy of My Summer Darlings, for a sizzlin' summertime read.

To learn more about May visit: MayCobb.com, and follow her on Twitter @mayKcobb, or Instagram @may_cobb.

09 Jun 2022Mark Greaney, Number 1 New York Times Bestselling Author of ARMORED01:04:34

Today's guest is none other than the multi-talented and award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling author of several thrillers, PLUS one of the nicest dudes walking the planet: Mark Greaney!

He's written SEVEN Tom Clancy thrillers, ELEVEN Gray Man Novels...coming soon to Netflix and starring Ryan Gosling, one stand-alone, and has more recently turned one of his attempts at screenplay writing into, not only an audiobook, but "reverse-engineered" that same property into what will most certainly become ANOTHER best-seller called ARMORED.

Mark joins me today to talk about a bevy of bodacious books in a brilliant career of behemoth adventures. And one of my favorite things about Mark is his level-headed approach to the BUSINESS of writing-which you'll enjoy in this show, but also the kindness with which he approaches each and every podcast.

Yes, Mark's been on my show before, but as you'll see and hear again today, he shares the same enthusiasm for his craft, each time he tells a story, as though it's the very first time.

Take the hour to listen to this podcast, despite the less-than-ordinarily-spectacular audio, and enjoy hearing about a career that, while is still rather young, shows NO signs of slowing down.

To learn more about my friend Mark, visit his website at: MarkGreaneyBooks.com. You can also follow him on Twitter @markgreanybook, on Instagram & Facebook @markgreanybooks.

17 Jul 2023Bruce Borgos, author of The Bitter Past00:39:25

On today's 140th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm pleased to introduce you to debut author Bruce Borgos. His book, The Bitter Past, is a superb read, and adept given it's his first traditionally published thriller novel.

In the tradition of Craig Johnson and C. J. Box, Bruce Borgos's The Bitter Past begins a compelling series set in the high desert of Nevada featuring Sheriff Porter Beck. Here's an excerpt that shares the mind of this terrific writer.

Porter Beck has worked in the shadows before – in another life when he could still see in the dark. But the Nevada sheriff is battling night blindness now and searching for a Russian assassin who’s killing old men in the high desert north of Las Vegas.

When an ex-FBI agent is tortured and killed, Beck is mystified, not by the gruesome scene in his normally quiet county but by the clues that point to the dawn of America’s atomic age and a secret test to see what would happen if deadly plutonium was “accidentally” released in the environment. To catch the killer, he must first find the KGB spy who came to steal America’s atomic secrets sixty years earlier, who now lives closer than he could know, and unravel the truth about the world’s first dirty bomb, two things the U.S. Government cannot afford to have revealed. As the body count climbs, so do the stakes for him and those he loves, especially when an alluring federal agent makes it impossible to know who to trust.

Craig Johnson, author & creator of Longmire, calls Borgos's talents, "A crisp jolt of cask-strength, 100-proof."

Author and friend of the podcast, Nick Petrie calls Bitter Past, "A gripping tale with vivid characters at a breakneck pace."

Kick back and enjoy an unforgettable and highly entertaining podcast with newcomer, Bruce Borgos (rhymes with gorgeous); he's a talent I feel certain we'll be reading and following for years to come!

26 Dec 2023Tod Goldberg author of Gangsters Don't Die00:51:22

The Thriller Zone Podcast Episode Synopsis

On this exciting episode of The Thriller Zone, host David Temple welcomes author Todd Goldberg to discuss his latest novel, "Gangsters Don't Die." David introduces Todd as one of the funniest, most engaging, and educated authors to ever grace the podcast. They dive into a variety of topics, including Todd's prolific writing career, his fascination with gangsters, and the inspiration behind his characters.

Todd shares that his interest in organized crime stems from growing up in Palm Springs, a city with a history of mob activity. He talks about the influence of his family's storytelling tradition and the cultural appreciation for reading and writing. Todd also reveals that he has received emails from people who have just gotten out of prison, expressing their appreciation for his book.

The conversation takes an interesting turn as Todd discusses the moral ambiguity of his characters and the appeal of gangster stories. He believes that Americans are fascinated by organized crime because it represents the idea of getting away with breaking the rules. Todd also emphasizes the importance of character development and creating complex, multi-dimensional protagonists.

David praises Todd's latest book, "Gangsters Don't Die," and highlights the gripping prologue and the morally conflicted protagonist, Sal Cupertine. He expresses his admiration for Todd's ability to make readers both despise and love the main character simultaneously.

The discussion then shifts to Todd's career as a professor and his role in directing the low-residency MFA program at UC Riverside. Todd shares his philosophy of teaching and his goal of positioning his students for success in the writing business. He emphasizes the importance of treating writing as commerce and not settling for struggling as an artist.

David and Todd briefly touch on Todd's previous podcast, Literary Disco, which was highly regarded in the literary world. They mention that the podcast is currently on hiatus but may return in the future.

The episode concludes with David asking Todd for his best piece of writing advice. Todd shares a valuable lesson he learned from author Donald Westlake: a story is over when the reader could write the next page. He explains that this advice has shaped his approach to writing and has led him to constantly surprise readers and avoid predictability.

Overall, this episode of The Thriller Zone provides listeners with an engaging and insightful conversation about Todd Goldberg's writing career, his fascination with gangsters, and his approach to storytelling.

The man who knows all our secrets has a secret of his own.

24 Jul 2023Brian Freeman, author of The Bourne Defiance00:40:27

On today's 141st episode of The Thriller Zone, we welcome Brian Freeman, author of The Bourne Defiance, the latest in the Robert Ludlum award-winning Jason Bourne Series.

This is Brian's return to The TZ, and as always, we have a blast. Brian is upbeat, engaging and very personal. He's also one helluva thriller writer.

In fact, this could be my favorite Freeman/Bourne thriller yet, as I say when I tell Brian, "Fast action, complex storylines, and memorable characters; everything you hope for in a Jason Bourne thriller."

Listen as Brian and I discuss the world of thrillers, whether they are psychological, military, or action thrillers. Plus, we'll cover the entire "Freeman Universe" that includes these series: Jason Bourne, Frost Eastman, Jonathan Stride, and Cab Bolton.

This doesn't even include his outstanding stand-alone novels that audiences have enjoyed in 46 countries and in 23 languages.

Lastly, Brian and I joke that his "best piece of writing advice" is exactly the same as it was when he visited The Thriller Zone in 2022, nearly a year to the week.

One Note: As you see, I'm not in the studio where I ordinarily broadcast, but that's because we are in the middle of a major move: our home and our studios are moving a few towns south of us, and closer to San Diego proper.

24 Nov 2022Philip Fracassi, author of A Child Alone With Strangers01:27:55

On today's 108th episode of the world famous Thriller Zone, we welcome horror thriller writer Philip Fracassi, with his new epic-sized thriller called A Child Alone With Strangers.

I say epic because it clocks in just shy of 600 white-knuckler pages. And if you're not familiar with PF, like I wasn't, then you're in for a real treat.

Think: Stephen King, but slightly different. Okay, there are other comparisons, but that's the one that gets to the point quickly.

Our conversation is vivid, and switches channels constantly between writing style and technique, to influences we've had, as well as a wide swath of literary magazines and groups with whom Philip has worked.

All in all, it's the perfect way to KICK OFF OUR HORROR THRILLER ADDITION to The Thriller Zone.

17 Aug 2021The Thriller Zone Bonus Podcast #2 featuring: The Poser02:33:42

Welcome to the second BONUS EPISODE of THE THRILLER ZONE Podcast, featuring The Poser.

Recently, I came up with an idea to offer some additional thriller entertainment to my listeners with a work of my own. Last year I released the mystery/thriller The Poser, based upon my character, Hollywood Detective Pat Norelli, and shortly after, I released its audiobook (available here).

Here's the idea: for the remaining Tuesdays of August, I’m offering the audiobook in four, 25-chapter long sections...completely FREE!

Each audiobook portion is roughly 2 hours, making the entire book just under 9 hours. As I said, I’m calling these four episodes The Thriller Zone Bonus Podcast and I hope you enjoy.

So, kick back and get ready for your long drive or flight, all-nighter, or leisurely walk; either way, here comes the next 25 chapters (26-50) of The Poser, starring rookie Detective Pat Norelli.

By the way, while this audiobook is completely free for you and to share with friends, I'd only ask that you not "copy & repurpose for your financial gain." Thank you.

Enjoy!

David Darling is an up-and-coming author, with several books under his belt, including the latest reality-bending thriller, Edge Of Time. He has been self-publishing for some time, now has an agent, and is "this close" to getting his career going.

On today's 129th BONUS Episode of The Thriller Zone, David and I talk about his latest book, of course, but we also talk about life in Canada, his time of service in the Army, what it takes to be a writer today, his routine (read: substantial self-discipline), and much more.

We discuss the "1,000,000 Words" aka 10,000 hour "rule" that many promote, as a way to gauge one's preparation for success. And along the way, we get his take on what it takes to be a success.

All in all, it's a good time. David is a Thriller Zone fan, and he has always shown his support in so many ways. I suppose that's one of the reasons, besides his talents, I wanted to carve out some time with him.

You'll enjoy his down-home approach, and clever sense of humor. And I hope you'll enjoy the bit of "Random Thoughts" I share at the very start of the show. I suppose it's a reflection of just one of the many ways I look forward to "broadening the scope" of this podcast. Let me know what you think, okay?

On today's 125th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm pleased to welcome New York Times Bestselling author of "A Killing Of Innocents," Deborah Crombie. This is Deborah's latest in the Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James mystery series.

Today, we chat about her latest mystery-thriller, about living in rural Texas, about her fondness (she'd say "obsession") with all things UK, and we dive into some "off the beaten path" items (certainly my style), which include her passion for English gardens, classic old Craftsman-style architecture (a passion we both share), German Shepherds, cocktails, and a few secret passions (shared inside, and detailed below). It's a LOT of fun packed into 30-minutes!

Please join me for a delightful conversation with a gal who's been at this for nearly 30 years, is celebrating her 19th Kincaid/James novel (while currently crafting her 20th), and has no plans for slowing down soon.

11 Sep 2023Kyle Mills, author of Code Red00:56:10

On today's 148th episode of The Thriller Zone, we're thrilled to welcome New York Times bestselling author Kyle Mills.

Kyle is the superb author who took over the Vince Flynn legacy series of the Mitch Rapp stories. And today he speaks about his latest thriller CODE RED, and how he plans to hand off the series to another iconic author, Don Bentley.

If you're a fan of military-themed thrillers, then you no doubt are supremely aware of Kyle's masterful handling of Mitch Rapp.

This is taken from Kyle's website, as he shares some "Behind The Scenes" of the iconic series.

"Code Red was an interesting novel to conceptualize. Because I was considering making it my last entry in the series, I found myself looking back at where I’d been—from finishing the arc Vince started in The Last Man, to Mitch going toe-to-toe with an opponent who was nearly his equal, to the desperate race to stop a Russian invasion of Europe. Over my time guiding the series, the character has evolved from a man still enraged and frustrated by the death of his wife to someone who’s found the stability of a new family and maybe even a little peace.

In the meantime, America has endured a decade of violent geopolitical changes from both inside and outside its borders. The direct threat from Islamicists has given way to growing political dysfunction, an increasingly belligerent China, and advancing technology that seems to be careening out of control.

What’s Mitch Rapp’s role in this new reality?

In the end, I decided it wasn’t my place to find out. I wanted to leave Mitch’s new custodian a solid platform to launch from without locking him into any particular course.

This gave me the opportunity to end with a stand-alone adventure that puts Mitch back in Arab territory but with a few modern twists. The goal was to tip my hat to Vince’s earlier books by creating an operation that involves a lot of fireworks and returns Mitch to his roots.

Which brings my era to a close. It’s hard not to feel a little sadness, but I’m excited to move forward with my Fade series. While I’ll miss writing about Mitch and the gang, I’m really looking forward to going back to reading about them." -Kyle Mills

On today's 160th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm happy to spend some time with debut author Steve Urszenyi as we discuss his thriller novel, Perfect Shot.

Sure, we cover his experience as a writer, but be sure to listen as he shares the story behind the breathtaking opening scene, plus his reasoning behind and the process of choosing a female protagonist Alexandre Martel. As you may guess, we learn how Perfect Shot is the first book in a series featuring Alex.

One of my favorite parts of this conversation is when Steve talks about his background as a paramedic and tactical medic which, as you'll quickly see, heavily influenced his writing and this story.

Our conversation concludes with a discussion about Steve's agent, John Talbot, and John's role in the publishing process. Plus, you'll hear how Steve Urszenyi used his experience with PitchFest to land that "dream agent," and continues by offering some advice for aspiring writers. Yes, you may have heard this one particular advice before, but listen as to how Steve makes it seem a wee bit different.

Then, working as a Corporate Intelligence Director for Motorola, he received the Meritorious Award, recognized for significant contributions to the intelligence profession. And yet, his yearning to craft a thriller remained a dream.

Finally, after many agent passes, he decided to carve his own path, and in 2014, did so, crafting his first self-published novel Secret Wars: An Espionage Story.

It wasn't until this year (2021), and with the growing popularity of self-publishing, he took another leap of faith and published The Spy Devils.

Joe feels he's in the groove with a popular protagonist, a band of crafty characters, and a genuinely thrilling theme.

Please join host, David Temple, as he sits down with Joe in this latest episode of The Thriller Zone.

10 May 2023Jack Carr, New York Times bestselling author of Only The Dead00:39:33

This month is turning out to be epic to this podcast; I mean, it's one great hit after another, to borrow an old radio phrase. Today, I welcome New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr to discuss his latest thriller, Only The Dead.

Jack is well-known in the #militarythriller community for his "been there/done that" true-to-life details, action-packed page-turning thrillers, and atop all the military awards, the hunting expertise, the love of sharp objects, and the mastery of the written word, he's just one helluva solid dude.

Professionally, he's a former Navy Seal, spent 20 years in Naval Special Warfare, and went from enlisted Seal sniper to. Jr. Officer leading assault and sniper teams in Iraq & Afghanistan, to Platoon Commander practicing counter insurgency in the Southern Philipines, to commanding a Special Ops task unit in Iraq.

With now six books under his belt, including: The Terminal List, True Believer, Savage Son, The Devil's Hand, In The Blood, and now Only The Dead, Jack, as you'll hear inside the show, tells us he is NOT slowing down.

In fact, between the Amazon TV Series, The Terminal List, Jack has another show in the works. He's also hard at work on his next thriller. AND he's putting his pen to paper for his first official non-fiction.

So, as you can see, this former Navy Seal has the stamina, determination, and discipline to keep...on...ticking...no matter the odds.

My wife and I have followed Jack's career from (practically) Day One, and we've noticed two big things: (1) No matter how successful he's become (and no doubt rich, to boot), and no matter how in-demand he is, Jack remains one of the very nicest men I've ever met in this business. In any business. And (2) Jack is a man that puts his family first, his country second, and his business third. That's a powerful combo.

Want to FOLLOW Jack? He's on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook @JackCarrUSA. His website is: OfficialJackCarr.com, and his storefront (which is kick-ass and super top-shelf) is shop.officialjackcarr.com

Kick back and enjoy a rapid fire session with my friend, Jack Carr. Would he have it any other way?

Oh, and just in case you're bummed it's only 30 minutes, Jack has assured me he's happy to make a return visit and clear the decks so we can have a much longer time together. After all, he says, "I want to see what this Rapid-Fire Questions" is all about.

Plese be sure to SUBSCRIBE at YouTube.com/TheThrillerZone, visit TheThrillerZone.com where you can follow everything we do, and connect via both Twitter AND Instagram @TheThrillerZone.

Thanks for watching!
