08 Aug 2020Olympics Re-Lived: 2016 Rio01:28:15

Rio 2016 was a particularly emotional and memorable Olympics for tennis, with Andy Murray defending his gold medal, Juan Martin del Potro entering people’s hearts, and shock defeats for Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic.

But it was Monica Puig’s run which best encapsulated the spirit of the Games. Catherine talks to her about how it felt to win Puerto Rico’s first ever gold medal.

As our journey through tennis’ history at the Olympics arrives at its final destination, we also speak to Christopher Clarey and Mary Carillo about their favourite memories and experiences of covering the Games.

Finally, we reflect on tennis’ place in the Olympics and consider the impact of Tokyo’s postponement.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

13 Jul 2017Wimbledon Day 10 - Venus Williams The Marvel Makes Wimbledon Final; Konta’s Dream Over For 2017; Federer/Berdych, Cilic/Querrey - Who Wins?00:21:16

Jo Konta’s Wimbledon dream may have ended for 2017 but the journey of Venus Williams to the final is an extraordinary story, and one which The Tennis Podcast team review in the latest show.

How has a woman of 37 been able to return to the final 17 years after her first title at the All England Club? Where did her match against Konta turn? And how will she get on against Garbine Muguruza in the final?

For Konta it was a disappointing day. What happened after she held break point at 4 games all? Did the occasion get to her? And was it poor form that she didn’t wait for Williams before departing the stage?

Muguruza’s win over Magdalena Rybarikova is assessed, the team look ahead to the men’s semifinals, and make their predictions for Roger Federer vs. Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic vs. Sam Querrey.

We also hear about podcast presenter David Law’s doorstep-interview with Venus’ mother Oracene on BBC 5 Live, how Law was captioned ‘David Lloyd - former British Tennis Player’ on the Victoria Derbyshire show (much to his delight) and Telegraph tennis correspondent Simon Briggs tells Catherine Whitaker what he will be writing about in Friday’s newspaper.

The Tennis Podcast is a downloadable tennis radio show which is produced in association with Telegraph Sport and Eurosport. Highlights of the day’s play at Wimbledon can be seen on Eurosport every night, with the finals screened live.

A new Tennis Podcast is out after play every night during Wimbledon.

10 Jul 2020Wimbledon Re-Lived 2008: Rafael Nadal - King of grass01:16:53

Finding new words to do justice to the 2008 men’s final at Wimbledon between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer is not easy, but that’s our task on this episode as we look back on the match regarded by many as the greatest in tennis history.

There’s talk about the sense before the match that it could finally be Nadal’s time, Federer’s missed opportunities in the first two sets, the way in which their match-up favoured Nadal, Federer’s fitful forehand, why the epic fourth set tiebreak echoed Borg-McEnroe, Nadal’s ability to recover in the fifth set as darkness fell, and the graciousness between the two camps.

We also hear from Mary Carillo who explains why the match lives up to the hype, Larry Stefanki about how Nadal had adapted his game to help him thrive on grass in 2008, Nadal’s PR manager, Benito Perez-Barbadillo, on how Nadal was feeling during the fifth set rain delay, and Chris Clarey to sum up the rivalry and relationship between Nadal and Federer.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

They talk about the way in which Coco Gauff’s run is transcending tennis, Serena Williams’s chase for 24, how the sport should deal with Nick Kyrgios, and the reasons behind umpire Damian Steiner's dismissal.

Finally, the best of the action from Friday at Flushing Meadows is wrapped up, including an update on the health of Novak Djokovic’s shoulder, and news of the way in which Daniil Medvedev antagonised the crowd and then thanked them for booing him in an extraordinary post-match interview.

06 Apr 2020Miami Re-Lived: Venus vs. Serena 1999; Murray vs. Ferrer 201301:07:05

To launch Tennis Re-Lived, Catherine, David and Matt look back on two classic Miami finals, starting with the first ever final between the Williams sisters in 1999. What was most noticeable about Venus and Serena’s respective games and personalities at the time? How was women’s tennis talked about in this era? And in what way was Richard Williams front and centre?

Turning to Murray and Ferrer’s epic in 2013, how did the match become so dramatic after a ropey start? Has there been a more shocking sight in tennis in recent memory than Ferrer cramping? And in what way did this match set the tone for their seasons?

30 Jun 2021Wimbledon Day 2 - The Sadness of Serena Williams00:50:25

Tuesday at Wimbledon elicited so many emotions - excitement as Nick Kyrgios returned to tennis, tension as Roger Federer got a lucky escape, uplifting joy as Carla Suarez Navarro got the send off she deserved, and overwhelming sadness as Serena Williams was forced to retire after just a few games. Afterwards, Catherine, David and Matt convened at Tennis Podcast Towers to take it all in.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

07 Aug 2012Episode 8 - Cliff Drysdale Interview, Olympics Review, US Open Series Preview00:33:48
The Olympic Tennis event has produced stories which have had The Tennis Podcast presenters, David Law and Catherine Whitaker, swooning. David wonders whether Andy Murray can use his gold medal triumph to launch a successful assault at the US Open, Catherine claims bragging rights in the prediction stakes, and the bickering continues as Toronto begins. In an exclusive interview, Cliff Drysdale tells the Tennis Podcast how the sport has changed since he reached the US Open final more than 45 years ago, and the emotions he went though when he led the players to boycott Wimbledon in 1973.

29 Aug 2019US Open Day 3 - Federer Finds Feet; Kyrgios Kicks Off Again00:30:02

Only nine matches were completed on Wednesday at the US Open as rain fell in New York, but there were still things for Catherine Whitaker and David Law to discuss.

They start with some Nick Kyrgios drama from the night before, and in particular his comment that the ATP is "pretty corrupt". Can he say that without evidence? Was he wise to clarify that position in a statement? And is all this just a distraction from the fact that his behaviour in Cincinnati is still under review and he still hasn't apologised to umpire Fergus Murphy?

Elsewhere, Elina Svitolina played superbly to beat a coffee-fuelled Venus Williams, and Roger Federer came from a set down to beat Damir Dzumhur. What's causing his slow starts? And how did he turn the match around so emphatically?

Finally, David reveals the hint he received that Borna Coric was going to withdraw, and there's chat about the ATP's decision to dismiss umpire Damian Steiner.

There will be daily editions of The Tennis Podcast throughout the US Open, produced in association with The Telegraph.

14 Oct 2019Is Daniil Medvedev currently the best male player in the world?01:00:07

Shortly after Daniil Medvedev won his second straight Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, debate raged on The Tennis Podcast WhatsApp group: is this just a 4-month hot streak, or is Medvedev actually the best of the ATP #NextGen and the current best in the world?

It's a conversation which Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts continue on this week's episode. They also get stuck into the other talking points from Shanghai, including ATP Finals qualification for Stefanos Tsitsipas, aggro involving Roger Federer, and Andy Murray telling Fabio Fognini to "shut up".

Elsewhere, there's chat about Coco Gauff winning her first ever WTA title and the headlines it generated, Dan Evans becoming the British No.1, and Marion Bartoli's coaching role with Jelena Ostapenko.

Finally, our Davis Cup Finals competition winner is revealed, and last week's big Solihull Showdown between David and Matt is re-lived.

04 Mar 2019Roger Federer - 100 Titles; Nick Kyrgios Goes Loco In Acapulco00:51:47

At the end of a thrilling week of tennis in Dubai and Acapulco, there was no shortage of talking points for David Law and Catherine Whitaker on The Tennis Podcast.

They begin by trying to find new superlatives for Roger Federer after he won his 100th career title. How fitting was it that it came in Dubai, a place where Federer has had his ups and downs? How well did he play throughout the week? What did he do differently to get revenge on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final? And can he now go on to catch Jimmy Connors’ Open Era record of 109 titles?

In Acapulco, we saw the whole Nick Kyrgios package, and wasn’t it wonderful? But have we learned anything new about Kyrgios? Or just been reminded of what we already knew? His comeback against Nadal is discussed, his demolition of Alexander Zverev is praised, and his use of the underarm serve is debated. Is it a legitimate tactic, obnoxious, or both?

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments, thanks to our Kickstarter backers. It is produced in association with The Telegraph.

07 Jul 2016Wimbledon Day 11 - Heartbroken Goran Picks Murray For The Title; Serena vs. Kerber The Rematch00:25:59

Goran Ivanisevic was inconsolable the day after the man he coaches, Marin Cilic, lost out to Roger Federer after holding three match point, and the Croatian now believes Andy Murray will go on to win the title.

In an interview with Tennis Podcast presenter and BBC 5 Live commentator David Law, Ivanisevic said this was the worst he had felt in nearly 20 years, since losing to Pete Sampras in the 1998 final.

He believes Federer against Raonic is now '50-50', that Murray will take care of Tomas Berdych, and that Murray will win his second Wimbledon.

Law is joined by co-host Catherine Whitaker, Simon Briggs from the Telegraph, and special guest Russell Fuller, the BBC's Tennis Correspondent, to review the victories of Serena Williams over Elena Vesnina, and Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams.

The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with The Telegraph.

Surprisingly, it's the same player! Here you can listen to the interview as a standalone recording. For the full podcast, download Episode 7.

12 Nov 2018ATP Finals Day 2 - How Do You Stop Novak Djokovic? Why Does Marin Cilic Keep Losing Leads? Traditional vs. Short Format Tennis00:36:30

Former British doubles player Colin Fleming spent the day at the O2 arena as a fan, and afterwards he joined David and Charlie Eccleshare on The Tennis Podcast. Beers in hand, they start by discussing a masterclass from Novak Djokovic who dispatched John Isner in the evening session.

How did he handle the Isner serve so easily? And can anyone realistically stop Djokovic this week?

The day’s other singles match saw Alexander Zverev defeat Marin Cilic. It was a match in which Cilic once again let a lead slip. Why does this keep happening? And how can he stop it?

As for Zverev, how well did he play? Why was he talking to his coaching team so often? And what does Fleming think of Zverev’s partnership with Ivan Lendl?

Finally, discussion turns to the Next Gen Finals, and specifically the different format showcased. Fleming was in Milan for the event and is a big proponent of many of the innovations. Why does he believe short sets could add intrigue to the ATP Tour?

He defends his views against a host of counter-arguments. Do short sets not take away the ebb and flow of a set? Do they not introduce an unwanted element of randomness?

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly in association with Telegraph Sport, and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments.

07 Jul 2015Wimbledon Day 8 - Will we have a new Big 4 in the men’s semis? Serena, Sharapova on collision course00:21:06
After a thrilling set of women’s quarterfinals on Tuesday, Catherine Whitaker (Live at Wimbledon) is joined by the Telegraph’s Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs to review them all, and look ahead to Maria Sharapova vs. Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska vs. Garbine Muguruza. Simon also teases Greg Rusedski’s Telegraph column which reveals the former British No.1 thinks Stan Wawrinka will reach the semifinals to set up a ‘new’ Big 4. All of the men’s quarterfinals are previewed. The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with the Telegraph, and supported by BNP Paribas, the bank for a changing world.

14 Jul 2018Wimbledon Day 11 - Djokovic, Nadal Held Overnight After Classic; Anderson Outlasts Isner, Reaches Final And Asks For Rule Change; Serena vs. Kerber Preview00:34:01

A memorable, bizarre, pulsating day at Wimbledon ended with Kevin Anderson in the men’s singles final after a 6 hour 36 minute epic, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal needing to come back out to continue battle on Saturday with Djokovic ahead 2 sets to 1, and a women’s final likely to be delayed as a result.

In total darkness after the 11pm curfew had brought play to a halt, Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Simon Briggs got together to review matters.

Is it time for a final set tie-break to be brought in at all the Grand Slams to avoid a scoreline like 26-24? Will Anderson be able to recover for the final? And who is he going to end up playing against - Djokovic or Nadal?

In the women’s final, Serena Williams will take on Angelique Kerber, but it might well be delayed. Is that satisfactory, or should they have resumed with the men’s semifinal afterwards?

The Tennis Podcast is produced daily throughout Wimbledon, presented by David Law and Catherine Whitaker.

It is produced in associated with Telegraph Sport and sponsored by Amazon Prime Video, the new home of the US Open in the UK.

23 Jan 2020Aus Open Day 4 - Late Night Epics; Kyrgios Keeps It Together; Dust Stops Play00:41:59

It felt like the 2020 Australian Open came to life on Thursday evening as a series of matches turned into epics under the lights. Afterwards, Catherine, David and Matt met up to talk about them, as well as everything else they'd seen on a breathless day. Why are Kyrgioptimism levels higher than ever before after his victory over Simon? Why did dust force play to stop? And how has Cici Bellis defied her injuries?

31 Aug 2018US Open Day 4 - Lahyani/Kyrgios Controversy Dominates Discussion; Best Third Round Line-up Ever?00:34:27

Not for the first time, a Nick Kyrgios match dominates discussion on The Tennis Podcast. This time, however, Kyrgios is ceding much of the spotlight to umpire Mohamed Lahyani, whose decision to get down from his chair and apparently give Kyrgios a pep talk has caused a lot of controversy.

David and Catherine give their reaction to the incident and its aftermath. Was Lahyani trying to cajole and counsel Kyrgios? Did he overstep the mark? What would be an appropriate sanction for Lahyani? And how would the situation have changed if Pierre-Hugues Herbert had reacted on court?

The media storm has covered up the fact that Kyrgios was tanking. Surely he can’t keep doing this? His approach frustrated David and Catherine immensely, but they both agree that he will give his all against Roger Federer in the next round.

Elsewhere, Angelique Kerber let a healthy lead slip, but eventually won in three sets. Will coming through this test serve her well later in the tournament?

Finally, there’s lots of excitement at the third round line-up. Has there ever been a better one in Grand Slam history? Will Sabalenka beat Kvitova? Can Shapovalov topple Anderson? And why is no one talking up Naomi Osaka’s chances?

There will daily editions of The Tennis Podcast throughout the US Open fortnight.

09 Jun 2017French Open Day 13 - Murray brilliant, Wawrinka better; Halep vs. Ostapenko final preview00:20:48

How could Andy Murray play that well and not win? That was the first thought of Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live) on the The Tennis Podcast, recorded shortly after the semifinals.

The answer, they concluded, came from down the other end of the court, where Stan Wawrinka was firing his bullets for more than four hours. Where was the match won and lost? What did Murray think of his performance? - we hear from him. And what sort of chance do the podcast team give Wawrinka in the final against Rafael Nadal?

Meanwhile, with the women’s final coming up on Saturday, what do they expect to happen? And what did Halep’s coach Darren Cahill say to Catherine when she asked him for an interview on Eurosport?

Both finals will be broadcast on Eurosport and Eurosport player.

17 Jun 2018Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic on their turmoil without tennis, and desire to return00:31:59

Andy Murray is back! After almost a year side-lined by injury, he will make his competitive return at The Queen’s Club against Nick Kyrgios on Tuesday.

In the first of daily podcasts from the Fever-Tree Championships, Murray’s last-minute decision to play dominates discussion.

In an incredibly honest interview, Murray opens up to Catherine about his difficult year and his prospects for the future. How has his relationships with the sport changed? How low did he feel during the long months of rehab? What unfinished business does he have left in the sport?

Hear the full-length interview on The Tennis Podcast.

The other big news is that Novak Djokovic is back at The Queen’s Club for the first time since 2010. Speaking to Gigi Salmon, Djokovic recounts in detail his own struggles over the last twelve months. What lessons has he learned? Have his problems been more physical or mental?

Finally, Cameron Norrie will face Stan Wawrinka on Monday. But what is the Brit’s party trick?

The Fever-Tree Championships at The Queen’s Club will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video in the UK from 11.30am every day. Their coverage is presented by our very own Catherine Whitaker, alongside Ross Dyer, Daniela Hantuchova and Greg Rusedski.

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments and The Fever-Tree Championships, in association with Telegraph Sport. It is presented by Catherine Whitaker (Prime Video) and David Law (BBC 5 Live, BT Sport).

17 Sep 2018Naomi Osaka’s Lap Of Honour – How Will She Cope With Being US Open Champion?; France & Croatia To Contest Last Davis Cup Final In Its Traditional Format00:51:25

The US Open may be over, but Naomi Osaka’s new life is just getting started. While her victory in New York was overshadowed, she’s capitalised brilliantly on the moment by signing an endorsement deal with Nissan and appearing on The Ellen Show.

On The Tennis Podcast, Catherine and David wonder how Osaka will handle her newfound status as a Grand Slam champion. What are some of the challenges she will face?

Elsewhere, this past weekend saw the first Davis Cup action since the vote to revamp the competition. How did Catherine and David feel while watching it? Did the Croatia vs. USA tie showcase everything that’s good about the current format? Or did it prove everything that’s wrong with it?

The decision to award two wildcards for next year’s Davis Cup Finals still sits uncomfortably with both David and Catherine. Will they just be a way of guaranteeing star power?

There’s also discussion about the decision to stick with 32 seeds at Grand Slams, reaction to the latest developments surrounding Serena Williams and Carlos Ramos, and a nod of appreciation to two teenagers – Amanda Anisimova and Jack Draper – who both registered noteworthy results.

The Tennis Podcast is uploaded weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments. It is produced in association with Telegraph Sport and sponsored by Amazon Prime Video.

Then, in the second half of the podcast, Catherine, David and Matt answer more listener questions.

  • Has Venus Williams underachieved in her career? (36:02)
  • Which players have surprised in good and bad ways this season so far? (48:03)

Sloane Stephens overcame Venus Williams in a deciding set - one of the best sets of the year, and then Madison Keys hammered Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2.

So what did The Tennis Podcast team make of it all? Former Top 50 player Jill Craybas joins presenter David Law to assess where the matches were won and lost.

Has the 11-month injury and surgery Stephens endured been a blessing in disguise? Is Keys coming of age two years after Martina Navratilova picked her on The Tennis Podcast to be a future World No.1? And with Williams going down in a third big Grand Slam match of the year, does a player’s nerve go when he/she gets older.

The Tennis Podcast is also joined by special guest Mats Wilander - a former World No.1 and winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles. He assesses the loss of Roger Federer, and looks ahead to Rafael Nadal vs. Juan Martin del Potro and Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Kevin Anderson.

A new edition of The Tennis Podcast is available to download after play every day during the US Open. Presented by broadcasters Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport, BBC 5 Live) and David Law (BBC 5 Live, BT Sport), it is produced weekly throughout the year, and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments, in association with Telegraph Sport and Eurosport.

29 May 2019French Open Day 4 – Heartbreak for Bertens; Wawrinka sends a message; Why are the stands so empty?00:31:49

A chaotic hour at the end of day four saw huge disappointment for Kiki Bertens as she was forced to retire, narrow and nervy victories for Grigor Dimitrov and Jo Konta, and late-night drama involving Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Benoit Paire. While it was all going on, Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts soaked up the atmosphere and recorded the latest Tennis Podcast.

What happened to Bertens? How will Jo Konta fare against the rising and increasingly prominent Viktoria Kuzmova? And why could neither one of Dimitrov and Cilic hold on to the lead?

Elsewhere, what did Stefanos Tsitsipas have to say at the end of his enthralling win against Hugo Dellien? Why does everyone in the men’s draw need to watch out for Stan Wawrinka after his demolition job on Cristian Garín? And why are the grounds so busy but the stands so empty?

Finally, straightforward wins for Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Garbiñe Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova are discussed.

The Tennis Podcast will be daily throughout the French Open, the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen’s, and Wimbledon. It is produced in association with Telegraph Sport.

01 Sep 2017US Open Day 4 - Federer Survives; Youzhny Heartache; Toni Nadal and Carlos Moya Talk Rafa; Wilander Hails ‘Exciting’ Shapovalov00:27:50

The US Open still holds out hope of a first meeting between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in New York, but as the Tennis Podcast team were reminded on Day 4, that clash is still some distance away.

Both Federer and Nadal scraped into the third round, Federer winning a second successive five-set match against a man he had previously held a 16-0 record against, while Nadal toiled for three hours before quelling the challenge of Taro Daniel in four sets.

What do Nadal’s uncle Toni and coach Carlos Moya think of the form of their man? Would they like to see a clash between Nadal and Federer. ‘No’, says Uncle Toni.

The big match on Friday is the Arthur Ashe stadium clash between British No.2 Kyle Edmund and the teenage prodigy Denis Shapovalov.

Ahead of the match, podcast presenter Catherine Whitaker spoke to former World No.1 Mats Wilander for Eurosport to see what he made of the young man. As you will hear, he was bowled over.

A new edition of The Tennis Podcast will be available to download after play every day during the US Open.

27 Sep 2020Roland Garros Day 1 - It's all just so weird00:59:20

The opening day of the French Open somehow managed to make 2020 just that little bit weirder, with the cold and blustery autumnal conditions dominating discussion and impacting matches. It meant there was plenty for Catherine, David and Matt to cover, including Victoria Azarenka’s stand, Stan Wawrinka’s destruction of Andy Murray, Mats Wilander’s comments about Murray, defeats for Jo Konta and Dan Evans, and much more.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Marcus Willis - British No.23, World No.772 and winner of $64 so far in 2016, faces one of the greatest tennis players ever to pick up a racquet - Roger Federer - in the second round of Wimbledon, and The Tennis Podcast team couldn’t wait to talk about it.

Gigi Salmon tells us what it was like to be in amongst the Court 17 crowd, describing the Willis victory scenes for BBC Radio 5 Live.

Annabel Croft drops by to share the stories she’s heard about Willis, and to reveal that Garbine Muguruza is a heck of a cook.

25 Jan 2017Australian Open Day 10 - Finally Grigor; Rafa’s Renaissance; Serena Slams Konta; Lucic-Baroni: ‘This Moment Has Made My Life’00:29:48
Grand Slam tennis tournaments always throw up a special moment or two, a decent storyline, and usually a fitting crescendo. But the Australian Open is different. Everywhere you turn there are stories.Yesterday, Roger Federer and Venus Williams, aged 35 and 36 respectively, advanced to the final four. Today it was the turn of Rafael Nadal, who hasn’t reached a Grand Slam semifinal in more than two years, Serena Williams, who is 35 years of age and chasing 23 Grand Slam titles, Grigor Dimitrov, who finally looks like coming of age, and the best of the lot - Mirjana Lucic-Baroni - who reached a semifinal 18 years after her first. 'This moment has made my life,' she said. With all of that in mind, Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live) didn’t really know where to start, so they asked Mark Petchey what he makes of it all instead. Can Federer win title No.18? Will Nadal stop him in the final again? Is Stan Wawrinka going to ruin everyone’s party the way he can? Or is Dimitrov ready to...

10 Sep 2021US Open Day 11 - Raducanu. Fernandez. WHAT IS HAPPENING?00:42:17

The teenage dream will extend all the way to the US Open final after Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu booked their places in Saturday's showpiece event. At the end of an extraordinary women's semi-final night, David and Matt try to convey what they saw and how they felt. How much was Aryna Sabalenka her own worst enemy? What did Fernandez do to cause Sabalenka's downfall? In what way did Raducanu neutralise Maria Sakkari's physical presence? And how did the Brit maintain her composure throughout the second set?

There's also a rundown of the records they're setting, lots of shock about surreal it all is, and a look ahead to the men's semi-finals on Friday.

27 Mar 2017Miami underway, Murray and Djokovic hurt, and what should tennis do with on-court coaching?00:56:30
As Miami got underway and concern grew for the health of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, the subject of on-court coaching came under the spotlight, and the Tennis Podcast team are debating it in this week’s show. Is it time for the men’s game to follow the lead of the women’s game and allow a mic’d up Ivan Lendl on to the court to tell Murray what’s what?Is it a ‘bad look’ for the sport, as many commentators have deemed it, for only female players to be seen asking for help on court? Should it be taken out of the sport altogether, or should tennis go much further and allow coaching from the stands between points? It’s all discussed in the latest Tennis Podcast. The health of Murray and Djokovic is discussed, the chances of Simona Halep, Jo Konta and the various other runners and riders in Miami are covered, and one of the show’s presenters reveals details of a scarcely credible tennis victory. There is also reaction to the latest Nick Kyrgios Twitter Q & A. The Tennis Podcast is a weekly...

He’s a major player in the sport, and promises to be for years to come. We know he isn’t afraid to complain about the length of the season and the content of interview questions, but do we really know what he’s like?

To find out more about him, David chats to his long-time friend and colleague Andrej Antic, a German tennis writer who has worked for Tennis MAGAZIN for over two decades.

How is Zverev viewed in Germany? Could he create a tennis boom in the country, like during the days of Boris Becker and Steffi Graf? And what is his relationship like with Ivan Lendl? Antic reveals all before discussing his own career. How has his job of producing a magazine changed in the era of social media?

On court today, Zverev was beaten by Novak Djokovic. What happened in the match? And are we entering ‘foregone conclusion’ territory with Djokovic this week? In the evening session, Marin Cilic won just his second ever match at the ATP Finals, closing out John Isner in the tournament’s first singles three setter. Bearing in mind his recent lapses when playing with the lead, how important will this win prove to be for Cilic?

Finally, there’s a moment to pay tribute to Agnieszka Radwanska who has announced her retirement. How will she be remembered? And did she under-achieve or maximise her potential?

28 Jan 2021Aus Open Re-Lived: 1995 - The tears of Pete Sampras01:12:47

In 1995, Pete Sampras was the world No.1, a five-time major winner, and the defending Australian Open champion. He was also a dominant and stoic figure, labelled by many as boring and representative of a sport in decline.

All that changed early in the fifth set of Sampras’ quarter-final match against Jim Courier when, overcome with emotion as he thought of his friend and coach Tim Gullikson, who had flown home from Melbourne with serious health problems, Sampras began to weep uncontrollably.

He somehow managed to ace his way through the tears and win the match, but it was an extraordinary moment, and one that altered the public’s perception of Sampras.

Mary Carillo, who was commentating on the match for ESPN, tells the story from her vantage point, and David remembers how he felt at the time, as a huge Sampras fan watching it all unfold on TV.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments.

03 Jul 2020Wimbledon Re-Lived 1992: Andre from the baseline01:00:52

Nobody expected Andre Agassi’s first Grand Slam title to come on grass at Wimbledon, a tournament he’d boycotted for a few years.

But Agassi always did things his own way, and when he won the tournament in 1992, he did it from the baseline, beating former champions Boris Becker and John McEnroe en route to the final, before overcoming the massive serve of Goran Ivanisevic in five sets.

Why was Agassi’s story such a big deal? What had happened in his first three Grand Slam finals for him to have developed a reputation for style over substance? And in what way was his return his biggest weapon against Ivanisevic in the final?

Larry Stefanki, who was coaching McEnroe at the time, contextualises Agassi’s feat and explains how he managed to beat so many classic grass courters. Chris Clarey of the New York Times, meanwhile, talks about what it was like to cover Agassi in the early 90s.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

05 Sep 2018US Open Day 9 - Nadal Wins Late-Night Epic Against Thiem; Sevastova Bamboozles Stephens; Serena Eases Past Pliskova; Is There An Irresistible Force Behind Del Potro?00:36:01

For the second night in a row, the end of The Tennis Podcast had to be recorded at past 2am in New York.

That’s because Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem played a marathon match long into the night, with Nadal prevailing in a thrilling deciding set tiebreak.

This was tennis at its absolute best, say David and Catherine, and also a brilliant advert for fifth set tiebreaks.

Nadal will now face Del Potro in a repeat of last year’s semi-final. Del Potro beat Isner in a match that played out as most people expected. Is there an irresistible force behind Del Potro pushing him to the title?

Elsewhere, there was a big surprise in the opening match of the day when Sloane Stephens was beaten in straight-sets by Anastasija Sevastova. How did Sevastova “bamboozle” the defending champion? Did Stephens show mental weakness?

Will Sevastova’s variety and court craft trouble Serena Williams in the semi-finals? Serena was a comfortable winner against Karolina Pliskova on Tuesday night. How well did she play?

There will be daily editions of The Tennis Podcast throughout the US Open fortnight.

05 Jun 2020Roland Garros Re-Lived 2009: When Rafa lost and Roger won00:56:47

The 2009 French Open is best remembered for Rafael Nadal’s first loss at Roland Garros and for Roger Federer’s only title there. The man at the centre of both storylines, Robin Soderling, joins us for an exclusive interview.

Soderling talks about how he stepped on court against Nadal with belief that he could win despite losing 6-1, 6-0 to him in Rome a few weeks earlier, how he respected but didn’t worship Nadal, what it felt like to be the first man to beat him in Paris, and the way in which Federer was a more difficult opponent for him in the final.

Was Nadal struggling with an injury that year? Would Federer have ever won Roland Garros if Soderling hadn’t beaten Nadal? How did he nervously get over the line? And what is Soderling’s place in tennis history? He opens up about his struggles with glandular fever, his attempts to come back, and the equal parts sadness and relief he felt when he finally decided to retire.

24 Jun 2018Queen's Day 7 - Cilic Banishes Demons; Djokovic Devastated; Who Is Wimbledon Favourite Now?00:27:51

A year ago, Marin Cilic cut a disconsolate figure as he lost the final against Feliciano Lopez from match point down. A year on, it was his turn to save match point against Novak Djokovic before winning through in the longest match in the history of the Fever-Tree Championships at The Queen's Club.

Afterwards, Cilic spoke to David Law, and, sitting overlooking centre court, Law and Catherine Whitaker debriefed over the match they had just witnessed. What happened to Djokovic - was it a choke? Or did Cilic wrestle it away?

What does it all mean for Wimbledon? Is Cilic now the favourite for the title? Is Djokovic a real contender?

14 Jul 2018Wimbledon Day 12 - Kerber Beats Serena But Both Are The Story; Djokovic Is Back After Edging All-Time Classic With Nadal00:40:03

With Royalty in attendance - the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex - Angelique Kerber defeated Serena Williams to win the Wimbledon title, and Novak Djokovic overcame Rafael Nadal in an all-time classic to reach the men’s final.

Afterwards, Catherine Whitaker was joined by Charlie Eccleshare of the Telegraph, and later David Law, to review the day.

Why was Kerber such a comfortable winner over Williams? How will the final be reported in the pages of the Telegraph? And what next for both players?

Where does Djokovic vs. Nadal stand in the list of all-time great contests? Is it the best rivalry of them all?

Did Wimbledon get its scheduling decisions right, or do they need to look at it for the future?

23 Jan 2019Australian Open Day 10 - Serena Squanders 5-1 Lead; The Mauresmo Effect00:38:05

After the earliest finish of the tournament so far, David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Grad Matt look back on another dramatic day, headlined by Karolina Pliskova’s victory over Serena Williams.

In what way is Karolina Pliskova’s new coaching set-up helping her? How much was Serena’s ankle injury to blame for her final set capitulation? And how much of a missed opportunity was this for Serena in her quest to win a 24th Grand Slam?

Pliskova will play Naomi Osaka next after she beat Elina Svitolina. Who will have the edge in that match?

In the men’s draw, Kei Nishikori was forced to retire against Novak Djokovic. Why was there a sense of inevitability about the whole thing?

Djokovic’s semi-final opponent will be Lucas Pouille. How impressive were his tactics to beat Milos Raonic? And what influence is Amélie Mauresmo having on his game?

Looking ahead to Day 11, who will reach the women’s final? And can Tsitsipas beat Nadal?

11 May 2020Madrid Re-Lived - When Clay Turned Blue; Maria Sharapova: Clay Court Specialist01:14:21

Catherine, David and Matt return with another episode of Tennis Re-Lived, this time looking back on a couple of classic finals and storylines from Madrid.

In 2012, the clay turned blue, and Janko Tipsarevic explains what it was really like to play on, who it favoured, how it affected Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, why it was ditched, and the reason it was slippery.

Plus, in what way was the final a microcosm of Tomas Berdych’s career? And how did Federer find his feet when others struggled?

The 2014 women’s final between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep turned out to be a prelude of the Roland Garros final that year, serving as an indication of Sharapova’s progress on clay. What was behind her mid-career transformation on the surface? Sven Groeneveld, her coach at the time, tells us.

20 Jun 2019Queen’s Day 4 - Andy Murray Is Back00:35:54

When Andy Murray struggled to haul himself onto a stool so that Catherine Whitaker could interview him in Australia, the idea that he would play stunning doubles at The Queen’s Club and celebrate like a big kid would have seemed frankly ridiculous.

But that’s what has happened.

Catherine spoke live to Murray for Prime Video after his straight sets win alongside Feliciano Lopez against top seeds Cabal and Farah, and David sat in on all of his interviews. Murray could not stop talking. It was a joyous occasion.

Elsewhere, Stefanos Tsitsipas scraped through against Jeremy Chardy, and now meets Felix Auger-Aliassime, who played extraordinarily well to beat both Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios in the same day. Kyrgios had further run-ins with officialdom. And repeat.

Rafael Nadal has won Roland Garros for a 13th time, equaling Roger Federer's record for the most Grand Slam men's singles titles, after crushing his other great rival, Novak Djokovic, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. We discuss whether Nadal's incredible level surprised Djokovic, the astute tactical performance that Nadal put in, Djokovic's persistent use of the drop shot, what Nadal's relatively understated celebration revealed about him, whether this is Nadal's greatest ever victory at Roland Garros, and where this result leaves the Grand Slam race.

17 Jan 2017Australian Open Day 2 - ‘Djokovic Passes Verdasco Test; 5 Brits in Rd 2; Murray on Lendl, No.100:30:52
A couple of weeks ago, Novak Djokovic fought through five match points to beat Fernando Verdasco and reach the Doha final. There was no such drama this time, and although it was far from vintage Djokovic, he did more than enough to go through to round two. In the Telegraph’s Tennis Podcast on day two of the Australian Open, presenters Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live) assess Djokovic’s form, and also try to establish what Boris Becker meant when he said the World Number 2 had not worked hard enough late last year. They asked both Djokovic and Becker for clarity, and you can hear those exchanges here. Five British players have reached the second round at the Australian Open for the first time in 30 years (1987), and the team react to the wins of Heather Watson, Jo Konta and Kyle Edmund on day 2.All of the other big stories on day 2 are reviewed and we also look ahead to Andy Murray’s second round match against Andrey Rublev on Wednesday. 25 Jan 2019Australian Open Day 12 – Brunch With Mary Carillo; Breathtaking Djokovic; Women’s Final Preview00:52:05

In what’s becoming a tradition of the Grand Slam daily pods, Catherine Whitaker and David Law are joined by the great Mary Carillo for a wide-ranging, free-flowing chat over brunch.

Who does Mary think will win the women’s final between Kvitova and Osaka? How impressed has she been by Rafael Nadal? Why does she think the scheduling at the Australian Open is ‘terrible’? And what three things would she change in tennis?

Catherine and David then return at the end of the show to discuss Novak Djokovic’s impeccable performance against Lucas Pouille. Has he ever played better? Sunday’s final against Nadal has all the ingredients to be a classic, doesn’t it?

Looking ahead to the women’s final, both David and Catherine think it will be incredibly close, but why are they both giving the edge to Kvitova?

There’s also a review of the uplifting women’s doubles final, won by Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai.

24 Sep 2018Osaka backs up US Open victory; Pliskova & Thiem win hard court titles; Lahyani suspended by ATP; Murray to shut down season after Beijing; Laver Cup – what does the future hold?00:53:23

There’s a lot to cover on the new Tennis Podcast.

For the second week in a row, David and Catherine begin by talking about the form of Naomi Osaka. The Japanese reached the final in Tokyo to back up her US Open title. Why was that so impressive? And just how well did Karolina Pliskova have to play to beat her?

Elsewhere, Andy Murray has decided that he will shut down his 2018 season after Shenzhen and Beijing in order to focus on being in the best possible shape for Australia. David and Catherine agree that it's a smart move.

There’s also discussion about Serena’s complicated relationship with her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, Mohamed Lahyani’s suspension by the ATP, and more progress for Dominic Thiem on hard courts. Plus, tribute is paid to Mikhail Youzhny following his retirement.

Finally, this week saw the second edition of the Laver Cup. What do David and Catherine think of the event? And what does the future hold for it?

His opponent will be Daniil Medvedev who easily beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the other semi-final. On the back end of the pod, we take stock of the Canadian's career, discuss how well Djokovic was forced to play, and consider how on earth Medvedev might stop him in the final.

To start the show, Catherine, David and Matt are back together to preview the women's final between Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez. What's the coverage going to be like in the UK? And what will happen when Fernandez's fight comes up against Raducanu's ruthlessness?

29 Oct 2018Svitolina Stars in Singapore; Federer Wins 99th Title; Agassi and Dimitrov Join Forces00:58:45

After a few weeks apart, Catherine and David are back together in London for this week’s show, with Elina Svitolina’s sensational title run in Singapore at the top of the agenda. Why did nobody see it coming? Can she now ‘do a Wozniacki’ and go on to win her first Grand Slam next year?

The other major storylines from the WTA Finals are also discussed, including Wozniacki’s rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis.

In Basel, Roger Federer won the 99th title of his career, but what should we make of his week? Did he find form just in time for the ATP Finals or did his run just paper over some cracks?

Elsewhere, the past week featured yet another case of ‘tennis player treats ballkid badly’, this time involving Stefanos Tsitsipas. His behaviour is bemoaned, but his public apology is commended.

As the tour heads to Paris, Nadal and Djokovic are locked in a battle for the World No.1 ranking, but they’re also coming under increasing pressure to cancel their controversial exhibition in Saudi Arabia. They’ve both been talking about the issue, and Catherine and David give their reaction.

In coaching news, Andre Agassi has been spotted in Paris helping out Grigor Dimitrov. Could it be the start of a successful partnership? Can Agassi rebuild his reputation as a coach after a failed stint with Djokovic? Is Dimitrov the perfect pupil? Catherine and David can’t wait to find out.

Finally, there’s time for the long-awaited segment on Tennis Chokes.

The Tennis Podcast is uploaded weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments. It is produced in association with Telegraph Sport.

08 Apr 2019Ask Catherine & David 6 – Can players become over reliant on their coaches? Is dominance good for tennis? Which new rule changes should be trialled?00:44:17

For the next two weeks our listeners will be setting the agenda on The Tennis Podcast as Catherine Whitaker and David Law take part in a couple of Q&A episodes. This week’s questions have been chosen by guest editor Keturah Anderssen-Chivers:

·      Are players damaging their chances of progressing in Grand Slams by regularly requesting on-court coaching on the WTA Tour? (01:09)

·      Is it better for the sport to have four outstanding players who dominate, or have a range of players competing more evenly? (14:25)

·      Is it unfair for a top player to enter 250 events - where they are likely to dominate - just so they can hit milestones? (20:31)

·      Which new rule changes should be trialled at this year’s Next Gen Finals? (24:30)

·      What are the pros and cons of working at tennis tournaments as journalists rather than attending as fans? (30:05)

·      Who are the best players aged 25 and above not to have won a Grand Slam title? And will they win one? (35:55)

·      Which players have had the most disappointing start to 2019? (39:45)

The Tennis Podcast will be released weekly throughout the year and daily at all four Grand Slam tournaments, courtesy of our Kickstarter backers. It is produced in association with The Telegraph.

08 Sep 2016US Open Day 10 - Murray Falls To Nishikori; Del Potro Dream Over; Serena Wins Classic00:20:32

Catherine Whitaker pre-warned that Kei Nishikori and Michael Chang had been plotting the downfall of Andy Murray on the practice court, and they got what they wanted in the US Open quarterfinals.

Murray had lost over five sets only twice in 8 years - both of them to Novak Djokovic - but for once he dipped into his enormous reserves and found nothing there.

Afterwards, Catherine and David Law got together to discuss the match, Murray’s struggle to deal with some of the distractions on the court, and the possible reasons.

They also cover the wins of Karolina Pliskova and Serena Williams, as the semifinals approach.

23 Aug 2021Cincinnati - Barty getting even better; Zverev zoning01:01:16

Ash Barty and Alexander Zverev are the Cincinnati champions, Jil Teichmann and Andrey Rublev had impressive runs to the final, and it was a big week for new types of aggro. Catherine, David and Matt discuss all of that, as well as the pay gap between the ATP and WTA events, Rafael Nadal's announcement that he will miss the rest of the season, and the Chicago final between Clara Tauson and Emma Raducanu.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

As Wimbledon prepares to get underway, Tennis Podcast presenters David Law and Catherine Whitaker are joined by the Telegraph’s Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs to dissect the singles draws. All three put their necks on the line with a string of predictions, Simon is grilled about his choices in the Telegraph website’s Top 50 men and women Wimbledon players ever, and David reminisces about his first queueing experience exactly 20 years ago. The Tennis Podcast is supported by BNP Paribas, the Bank for a changing world. 09 Jul 2019Wimbledon Day 8: Jo Konta – The Loss, The Press Conference; Serena Summons Her Best In Singles And Doubles00:40:30

Women’s quarter-final day delivered plenty of talking points on and off the court, and afterwards Catherine, David and Matt were joined by The Telegraph’s Charlie Eccleshare to talk it all through.

Firstly, how much was Jo Konta's defeat down to Barbora Strycova’s cunning game plan? And how much of it was down to Konta’s own performance?

After the match, Konta took exception to the tone of a question during her press conference. What happened? What prompted the line of questioning and was it fair? Would a man have been asked the same questions? And how well did Konta do to respond in such a measured but critical manner?

Charlie gives an insight into the mechanics of print journalism, while Catherine opens up about why, from her own experience in the press room, she sympathises with Konta’s reaction.

Elsewhere, there’s discussion about Serena summoning her best tennis in both singles and mixed doubles, Elina Svitolina finally overcoming her Grand Slam quarter-final hoodoo, and whether grass actually suits Simona Halep.

There will be daily editions of The Tennis Podcast throughout Wimbledon, produced in association with The Telegraph.

14 Sep 2015US Open - Djokovic ‘Could Catch’ Federer; Flavia's Fitting Finale00:17:29

The newly crown US Open champion Novak Djokovic is capable of winning more Grand Slam titles than Roger Federer, according to the Telegraph’s Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs.

In a Tennis Podcast recorded just moments after Djokovic’s victory in the final of the US Open - his tenth major title - Briggs told presenter David Law (who commentated on the match for BBC Radio 5 Live) that ‘it is not impossible’ for Djokovic to reach and surpass Federer’s current total of 17.

In the podcast, Briggs, Law and Catherine Whitaker of Eurosport also discuss the women’s final - the victory and subsequent retirement announcement of Flavia Pennetta.

15 Jul 2017Wimbledon Day 12 - Garbine Muguruza - Champion; Venus Dream Dashed; Roger Federer vs. Marin Cilic Predictions00:22:41

Garbine Muguruza dashed the dream of Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final and the Tennis Podcast team were as perplexed by the vast difference in quality between the two sets played as everyone else.

Williams was arguably the better player in a first set that she lost 7-5, so why did she fade so considerably in set two?

Where did that Muguruza performance come from? Should she and will she now go and hire Conchita Martinez as a full-time coach? And can she take her Wimbledon form into the rest of the year and dominate the sport?

The men’s singles final could, in the view of Tennis Podcast presenter David Law, be an absolute classic. But only if Marin Cilic is fully fit, and mentally ready to take on Roger Federer in his back yard. What does co-host Catherine Whitaker think? Find out on the show. Both make their predictions, as does Telegraph tennis correspondent Simon Briggs.

The Tennis Podcast is a downloadable tennis radio show which is produced in association with Telegraph Sport and Eurosport. Highlights of the day’s play at Wimbledon can be seen on Eurosport every night, with the final screened live.

A new Tennis Podcast is out after play every night during Wimbledon.

08 Jul 2019Wimbledon Day 7 - Barty, Pliskova Crash; Konta Through; Federer, Nadal, Djokovic Stroll00:47:56

Manic Monday came and went with all of the main drama in the women's draw, so when Simon Briggs joined The Tennis Podcast team to look back, there was plenty to get his seeth stuck into.

Ash Barty and Karolina Pliskova, two of the favourites for the title, crashed out. Which was the bigger surprise, and how did Alison Riske and Karolina Muchova win over Barty and Pliskova respectively?

Where does that leave Jo Konta and Serena Williams, who were both victorious on Monday? Will Serena win her 24th Slam? Can Konta go all the way? Briggs thinks she can, and will.

On the men's side, it was a walk in the park for Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Guido Pella continued to do himself proud, but can any of the players left get in the way of the big 3 in a meaningful sense?

15 Nov 2018ATP Finals Day 5 - Sue Barker guests! ATP Cup launch reaction00:31:36

The 1976 French Open champion Sue Barker is our special guest as we digest the launch of the ATP Cup and what it means for the Davis Cup finals in the future.

What did the power-brokers say in response to Novak Djokovic’s assertion that it could lead to two ‘average’ events? What does Sue, Catherine Whitaker, Simon Briggs and David Law make of it all? And should Davis Cup have changed in the first place? Sue isn’t so sure.

The BBC’s long-time tennis presenter also talks about the matches at The O2, gives her predictions for the next few days, her thoughts on whether Andy Murray will make it back to the top of the game, and whether Johanna Konta can return to her peak.

08 Mar 2016Maria Sharapova Bombshell; Murray & Djokovic on Davis Cup Collision Course; Bud Collins - A Tribute00:47:46

She was expected to announce her retirement, but instead Maria Sharapova revealed even more shocking news in a Los Angeles press conference - she had tested positive for the banned substance meldonium, which she said she had been taking for ten years for a health condition, but which had been added to the banned list at the start of 2016.

In the latest Tennis Podcast, you can hear Sharapova's statement in full, and presenters David Law and Catherine Whitaker discuss the implications for Sharapova and the sport.

Also, with Andy Murray finally subduing Kei Nishikori after 4 hours and 54 minutes, and Novak Djokovic coming back from two sets to one down in Belgrade, the pair could be on a collision course in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in July.

Is Murray's decision to prioritise the Davis Cup a sign that the media has been under-appreciating the completion all along? And will Djokovic put his hand up for the quarterfinals in this jam-packed Olympic year?

Finally, the Tennis...

31 Aug 2021US Open Day 1 - Total Andy Murray00:40:07

Day one felt like the US Open again and Andy Murray looked like Andy Murray again.

Those were the big takeaways for Catherine, David and Matt on the first nightly podcast from this year’s tournament at the end of a day packed with drama, epic matches, and even some aggro.

How did it feel different watching Murray this time compared to other recent matches? Should he have won? And why has he “lost respect” for Stefanos Tsitsipas after the Greek’s lengthy bathroom break?

Elsewhere, we discuss how Sloane Stephens vs Madison Keys exceeded expectations, gritty performances from Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber and Coco Gauff, and a big win for Simona Halep.

Given Novak Djokovic's 2015 heorics, just whose era over the last year has been the greatest? Was it Federer in 2006? Nadal in 2010? Or does Djokovic today beat them both? Catherine and David debate the issue passionately.

Our special guest is the last man to captain Great Britain to the Davis Cup final - Paul Hutchins, who recalls the final in which John McEnroe played his first ever Davis Cup rubber, how he got the best out of the Lloyd brothers, and what he thinks Dan Maskell might have made of tennis today.

27 Jan 2019Australian Open Day 14 – Sublime Djokovic Wins 15th Grand Slam; But What Happened To Nadal?00:39:38

As we expected, Novak Djokovic is the Australian Open champion. But the manner of his victory - an emphatic straight-sets thrashing of Rafael Nadal – came as a big surprise. On The Tennis Podcast, David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts discuss the final in depth.

What makes Djokovic so effective against Nadal on a hard court? Will he be able to translate the formula to clay and win a fourth consecutive slam at the French Open? And will he end up winning more slams than both Nadal and Federer?

As for Nadal, was he nervous throughout the final? And why did he not try to play his new, more aggressive hard-court game? Would it have even made any difference?

Elsewhere, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut completed their career Grand Slam. What makes them work so well together?

Finally, how will we all remember the 2019 Australian Open?

12 Feb 2021Aus Open Day 5 - Last night at the tennis01:03:00

Well that was one of the most surreal nights of tennis we’ve ever seen.

The announcement of a Victoria state lockdown from midnight in Melbourne put the attendance of fans at the Australian Open on a ticking clock and led to one of the most electric atmospheres imaginable for all five mesmerising sets of Nick Kyrgios vs. Dominic Thiem and then to a mass exodus of fans mid-way through Novak Djokovic’s match against Taylor Fritz. The rest of it, as Djokovic struggled on through injury to win in a decider, was played in eerie silence. We did our best to process it all on the podcast.

It was also a day which saw Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek set up blockbuster R4 matches against Garbine Muguruza, Aryna Sabalenka and Simona Halep respectively. Their performances are analysed, Su-Wei Hsieh’s post-match interview is praised, and we learn about Aslan Karatsev.

On a day that Roger Federer moved one match away from the final of the Australian Open, and Rafael Nadal is still there, Andy Roddick joined The Tennis Podcast to declare that a meeting between the two in the final could be ‘the most historically significant match ever’. Roddick, inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in an on-court ceremony, told podcast presenter Catherine Whitaker (in Melbourne for Eurosport) that it could be an earth-shifting moment for the sport if it happens. He also talks Milos Raonic, Serena and Venus Williams, and who he thinks will win the two titles. The podcast team are also joined by Christopher Clarey, who has covered tennis for the New York Times for more than 20 years. 03 Jun 2020Roland Garros Re-Lived 2003: Henin and Clijsters – it’s complicated00:50:22

Justine Henin won the first of her four Roland Garros titles in 2003, beating Serena Williams in a controversial semi-final and Kim Clijsters in a one-sided final.

With the help of Mary Carillo, we look back on those rivalries which shaped Henin’s career as well as her very strong record at the French Open during the mid-2000s.

What made Henin such a threat to Serena? Did Henin and Clijsters like each other? What caused their rivalry to be a bit weird? How did it evolve? And why did Henin have such a special connection with Roland Garros?

Finally, we hear from Henin herself who talks about the importance of rivalries and the way in which they made her a better player.

12 Nov 2018ATP Finals Day 1 - Federer Fumbles vs. Sturdy Nishikori; Anderson Downs Thiem; Czechs Make It 6 Fed Cups In 8 Years; Halep-Cahill Separate00:33:09

London arrived in numbers to celebrate another year of Roger Federer, but his fans left disappointed as Kei Nishikori became the first man to beat him in straight sets in the round robin stages of the ATP Finals.

After a tumultuous, but error-strewn night, David Law was joined on The Tennis Podcast by Grad Matt Roberts to discuss what happened. What happened to Federer? Why did he lose his temper with umpire Damien Steiner? And what did Nishikori do differently to beat a man he had trailed 2-7 in head-to-head meetings?

Earlier, David and Matt were joined by Simon Briggs of the Telegraph to cover the afternoon’s match between Kevin Anderson and Dominic Thiem. Why does Anderson always beat Thiem, and how much further can he go?

Memories of O2 events gone by are discussed, including the Federer-Wawrinka-Mirka saga, and Andy Murray reaching World No.1 in 2016.

In the Fed Cup final, the Czech Republic defeated the United States 3-0, but the third rubber was an absolute epic. Why are the Czech’s such an amazing tennis nation?

In coaching news, World No.1 Simona Halep and Darren Cahill parted ways. Find out what the podcast team make of it all.

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly in association with Telegraph Sport, and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments.
