15 Jun 2021 | Going From Crazy To Calm - Parenting Advice from Laura Linn Knight | 00:22:48
Welcome to the Teaching Your Toddler interview with Parenting Expert and Former Elementary School Teacher Laura Linn Knight as she talks to our host Marijo Tinlin about incredibly practical calming technique to take your child (and you) from crazy to calm. Laura is a former kindergarten and 1st grade teacher who found out that once she became a parent herself, kids are different at home than at school. Listen to Laura talk about the “Big Emotions” kids feel when they are in the safe haven of home and how that manifests itself when they are unhappy. Also, what do you do when your toddler melts down OUTSIDE of your home – what are the techniques you can use to help calm them down? (And get yourself calmed down as well!). Laura talks about the connection between the pre-frontal cortex of rational thought and how we as parents need to become that rational person for our child because they still live in their “lizard” brain portion called the amygdala. Our brains don’t fully form that connection between the two parts until we are 25 so we really need to help our kids think rationally. She’s offering a free download to our listeners of her brand new “Calm Cards” that have really helped when her own daughter gets upset and now they can help you and your child too. Find them on her website under “Free Calming Tools” at lauralinnknight.com Please like and subscribe to our podcast and leave a 5-star review so we can reach more parents like you! 30 Sep 2020 | Ways Parents Can Start Saving for College with Melissa Ridolfi from Fidelity | 00:07:13
Teaching Your Toddler welcomes Melissa Ridolfi, Vice President of Retirement and College Leadership at Fidelity Investments to talk about ways parents of young kids can prepare to save for their kids’ college education. Almost one-third of parents aren’t sure what to expect in terms of the cost of college by the time their kids are ready to enroll but, surprisingly, 77% of parents do save for college and believe college is worth the expense. In this interview, Ridolfi shares several ways parents can save without taking big chunks of money such as using credit cards that give you cash back into your 529 savings plan or encouraging friends and family to give gifts of money into 529 funds in lieu of gifts for kids. 07 Oct 2020 | Reframe Your Mom Expectations to Find Calm & Happiness with Dr. Dravon James | 00:26:48
Dr. Dravon James joins Teaching Your Toddler this week to talk about how moms, especially young moms learning about being a mom AND managing little ones, can keep their cool even in the chaos. Many times, we need to reframe our expectations to find calm and happiness during the storm. Dr. James has some great ways to help ground yourself and “listen to your body” instead of letting your brain make all the decisions. Listen for her fantastic “Body Scan” exercise for decision-making. She says “the body never lies” while our brain can easily tell us what we want to hear. She also says we can be thankful while STILL being angry and she’ll explain what that means. She also reminds us that we are always modeling to our children regarding how we react to emotions and situations. Remember, they are ALWAYS watching and observing.
Dr. Dravon James is the founder of Everyday Peace and hosts the weekly radio show “Everyday Peace” on Unity Radio. She is also a speaker, life coach and the author of the book “Freedom Is Your Birthright.” After spending 30 years as a pharmacist (make sure you read her book on how she discovered that career choice wasn’t a great fit), she is an inspirational speaker, author and actress including a recurring role on HBO’s “The Wire”. 12 Aug 2020 | The 4 Pillars of Being Present With Your Family with Dr. Greg Hammer MD | 00:22:06
Dr. Greg Hammer, MD is a pediatric intensive care physician, pediatric anesthesiologist, professor at Stanford University Medical Center and the author of GAIN Without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. He has also spent many years learning and teaching about health and wellness including a daily meditation practice. In this episode, Dr. Hammer talks about the 4 Pillars of Being Present – the only time we are guaranteed is the present we are experiencing RIGHT NOW. As parents, sometimes it’s hard to stay present. He also talks about ways to have gratitude each day and take stock in the wonder of the day. Our days with kids are long and tiring. Taking time at the end of the day either writing down or thinking of 3 things has been scientifically been proven to help us be happier. One of the most important practice we can teach our children is gratitude. Taking time each day to talk about the good things that happened. Dr. Hammer talks about our true nature as beings seeking peace and happiness but we often get stuck in the bad things that have happened to us. Teaching out kids to learn to see the good is a huge skill and it actually rewires our brains when we think about happy things. He wraps the show with his thought on the gift it is to have children – the magic of connecting with the unconditional love we feel for our kids and the privilege we have as parents of being with them. 29 Apr 2024 | Dyslexia: Early Clues You Can Look For And What To Do Next with IMSE's Robin Zikmund | 00:32:35
Wondering what the signs are that your child may potentially struggle with dyslexia? You HAVE to listen to our interview with Robin Zikmund, a mom-advocate from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). It's estimated that about 20% of kids struggle with dyslexia; that's one out of five! AND - it's hereditary, so if someone in your child's family struggled with dyslexia, that could mean your child is more likely to struggle too. There's a spectrum for dyslexia too so there's a huge range to how much it might affect someone. Early intervention is KEY, Robin says so this episode is even more important if you have little ones - like before age 5! While this episode is not meant as a diagnosis, Robin will help you start looking for some of the earliest signs of one of the most common learning challenges - she will also help you understand what your next steps are to get the support you need from your child's school. Robin's story of her son's frustration with reading and learning to the point of complete defeat, will break your heart, but also her drive to get to the bottom of what was happening and eventually "educating the educators" will inspire you to advocate for your child too. She mentions the Orton-Gillingham methods which you can find out about on the IMSE's website here. https://imse.com/ She also mentions Emily Hanford's podcast called Sold A Story found here: https://features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/ Robin serves as the Dyslexia Advocate and Community Engagement Manager for IMSE, the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education - a literacy training company focused on the science of reading. She is also the founder of Decoding Dyslexia Idaho, a grassroots movement that aims to increase access to educational interventions and teacher professional development for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities in public schools. Taylor and Megan help counsel couples on their financial personalities and offer SO many resources, available on their website themoneycouple.com. It’s estimated, according to the Money Couple’s website, that up to 70% of divorces are caused by money trouble. So how do you even start that conversation? Also, what about your kids? How can you start teaching them about money, what it means, what the value is, what the connection is between effort and reward? Listen to this episode and find out exactly how to start those tough but super important conversations. The Money Couple have three kids of their own and share some of the helpful ways they are teaching their own kids about money and about how you can too. 29 Aug 2024 | The School House Curriculum That's Changing America with Mimosa Jones Tunney | 00:31:25
How would you feel if your child WANTED to go to school over the summer or was sad when school was closed for a snow day? Mimosa Jones Tunney speaks to the Teaching Your Toddler show about the curriculum that is inspiring kids across the country to WANT to learn, who love school and who get sad for snow days and summer break. Can you imagine? Mimosa is a writer, researcher and the founder of both the American Emergent Curriculum and The School House, a private elementary school in New York. She’s also a former political speech and Hollywood television writer as well as an avid philanthropist. She's also our favorite kind of guest - an activated mom! She saw the deficiency in public education where schools "dumb down" kids and "teach to the test" instead of what she calls "smart up" the kids and teaching to their interests and passions that keeps them loving learning throughout their school life. Over 300,000 teachers per year leave the profession, often out of frutration. The curriculum The School House offers can be used by homeschoolers, "micro-schools"/learning pods as well as brick and mortar schools. This curriculum is so inspiring for kids and so successful, it could inspire those teachers back to the classroom. So far, communities using this curriculum have appeared in Texas and Florida, and continue to spread across the country. The school is private and continues to beat the state test scores, without ever teaching to the test, because the kids LOVE learning. Mimosa also noted that in their school, they do not allow politics or gossip from the teachers so that everyone feels welcomed and the school can concentrate on learning. It's truly a novel approach that addresses children's learning stages and their areas of interest. This approach also often alleviates or eliminates typicial learning challenges that children display due to the antiquated approach most typical public schools take for learning. 20 Jul 2024 | How To Make Reading Silly, Fun and Effective with Educator Stefanie Hohl | 00:27:27
Stefanie Hohl, M.Ed., has been teaching children to read for years. She holds advanced degrees in both children's literature and early childhood education, and she has experience running preschool, homeschool, and local storytime programs. Stefanie developed the ABC See, Hear, Do Learn-to-Read method to make early reading fun and easy for kids and their parents. Stefanie lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, five children, two very silly dogs and two cuddly cats. The program combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles and has shown to increase learning and retention by 90%. In this episode, Stefanie also shares her journey of developing a parent-friendly reading method and emphasizes the benefits of incorporating movement into learning. Stefanie emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation in phonics before third grade to prevent kids from falling behind and struggling in school, as reading is essential for learning across subjects. The research shows phonics is the best way for kids to learn reading, though many schools have abandoned this approach, leading to an alarming percentage of students not being at grade level. Stefanie's program consists of seven levels designed to make learning fun through games, activities, and books that teach letter sounds and different phonics patterns in a multisensory way. We discuss the importance of parents selecting age-appropriate early readers for their children and the early signs of reading disabilities. Stefanie also shares details about her Christmas-themed books and her journey from her master's in education to becoming a writer. Enjoy the show! 03 Mar 2024 | The New Paradigm of Skills-Based Hiring with Doris Savron | 00:07:01
The workforce market is evolving, and this year we'll see more employers begin to move away from the emphasis on four-year degree requirements to greater recognition of valuable skills. However, there are sizeable skill and opportunity gaps for workers illustrated in the results of the University of Phoenix's recent Career Optimism Index® study. The Index showed that while more than half of Americans are seeking their next career move, 70% would prefer to stay in their company if they were given more opportunities to learn and apply new skills. Studies by workforce research leaders McKinsey and Deloitte make the case for focusing on skills as well. In this episode, Doris Savron, vice provost of Colleges, Assessment and Curriculum at University of Phoenix, discusses the transition to skills-based hiring in the workforce. She also talks about how workers can leverage their skills, employers can develop talent, and education leaders can empower learners and job seekers in this new era of skills-based hiring. Doris Savron, Vice Provost, Colleges, Assessment and Curriculum, University of Phoenix Doris Savron has over 23 years of experience in higher education in a variety of settings. Doris serves as Vice Provost overseeing the strategy for University of Phoenix academic programs and curriculum design, institutional assessment and faculty. This includes oversight of strategy for degree, certificate and course offerings, design of curriculum and student learning outcomes for the University. She works collaboratively with her team members to innovate academic solutions that enable the University to provide exceptional student experiences and learning environments to support student success. In her tenure with University of Phoenix she has served as associate faculty, campus vice president, regional Vice president of student services, and college operations. Doris is a first-generation college graduate with her parents never finishing high school and saw first-hand the struggles a lack of education creates for some families, and the benefits and opportunities a degree brings to future generations. She understands the unique challenges that older adult students encounter trying to navigate their life responsibilities while also earning their degrees. Doris is passionate about giving back to the community and serves on several boards including Career Connectors and Propenum College in Lusaka, Zambia, and recently completing a six-year term on Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. Doris is often sought out as a speaker for her expertise on mapping relevant skills in programs and building an infrastructure to support career tools in curriculum design, micro credentialing and other innovations in curriculum (1Ed Tech, PACRAO). Doris’s significant contributions in her profession, mentoring, and community leadership led to being selected as Greater Phoenix Chamber’s Private Sector Athena Finalist in 2020. Her advocacy for women in leadership has led her to project work in India, Zambia and the U.S. supporting women to achieve their potential in their profession. She has designed, led, and presented in several international empowerment conferences. Doris earned her MBA from Cleveland State University and is completing her doctorate in management in organizational leadership.
