10 Sep 2023 | Season 3, Episode 12: Brian Vollmer, pt.1 | 00:45:03
This week's interview is yet another really special one for me and The Talk Music podcast as it's with singer BRIAN VOLLMER from HELIX. I truly regard them as another fantastic band that I owe my success to as a producer as I was fortunate to produce 4 albums for them. I am so grateful that one went double platinum and two others platinum in Canada. We also had success around the world including a #1 album in Sweden for the album LONG WAY TO HEAVEN due to a major commitment from the US and Europe when their manager Bill Seip and I got them signed to Capitol Records in Los Angeles. The key to that happening was that Dean Cameron from Capitol Canada was a major cheerleader for the band as was international head of Capitol/EMI David Munns from the UK. After opening for KISS on their European tour and getting heavy video rotation on MTV for the song “HEAVY METAL LOVE” from the album NO REST FOR THE WICKED, the band started to blow up worldwide. Their signature song Gimme an R, Gimme a O….. what ya got “ROCK YOU” from the album WALKING THE RAZOR’S EDGE also received tons of play on MTV. I LOVED all my times working closely with HELIX, so this long entertaining chat with BRIAN will be my first interview in TWO PARTS. In Part ONE, we cover what HELIX is up to currently, Brian’s early music beginnings, his mentors, the formation of HELIX, how he attracted Bill Seip (a booking agent at the time) to become his manager and some banter about how the song ROCK YOU came about. HELIX are still going as strong as ever and approaching their 50th Anniversary as a band! Kudos to them! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
20 Oct 2023 | Season 3, Episode 14: Daryn Barry | 01:31:26
On this week's podcast, my guest is DARYN BARRY, co-owner of one of the best studios in the world: The ORANGE LOUNGE RECORDING STUDIO in downtown Toronto. I recently had some of the most fun in years with Daryn as we chatted in his beautiful, vibing control room. Daryn was the first employee I hired at my Hypnotic label/studio many years ago, so we chat about how we first met and some of the acts we worked on together, including BIG SUGAR, ANVIL, VOIVOD, and THE LOOK PEOPLE (featuring JAYMZ BEE and KEVIN HEARN). After leaving Hypnotic, we go deep on how Daryn helped open The Orange Lounge boutique studio and turn it into one of the best in the world. With an incredible list of some of the world's biggest stars who have either recorded or mixed there (DRAKE, AMY WINEHOUSE, THE WEEKEND, NELLY FURTADO, TRAGICALLY HIP, RUSH and MADONNA), Daryn opens up about his time working with the artists and offers his expert advice on the process. This is the longest chat I’ve had so far, but we had so much fun discussing our views on the music biz that I’ve decided to post the entire deep dive. Enjoy! On this week’s podcast, I’m stoked to chat with David Diamond and Mister Zero from the band THE KINGS, who in 2020 celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of their debut album, The Kings Are Here. On the album was a massive hit song called “This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide” that exploded in Canada and the US and earned them an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. That song and the album was produced by legendary producer BOB EZRIN, whose incredible portfolio includes such masterpieces as Pink Floyd's the Wall, Peter Gabriel’s solo album, Alice Cooper and many more. Listen in as we chat about the band's career, how Bob got involved, his production ideas, and how the band ended up on the biggest TV show of that era, Dick Clark's AMERICAN BANDSTAND. We also chat about what they are up to currently, the release of their brand new single “Always Off The Deep End” and much more! For this new TALK MUSIC podcast I was thrilled to also have HARRY PIWERKA join me as a co-host. Harry and I went to high school together and reconnected a while back. As it turns out, he’s also a great musician and was a part of the Toronto's vibrant music scene in the 70’s as a member of the band MORNINGTON DRIVE. Harry is also friends with our guest, BASSIST extraordinaire and all round musician and NICE guy JEFF JONES. His long esteemed history of performing bass duties for some of Canada’s great artists is really impressive. Jeff has played and recorded with TOM COCHRANE (and RED RIDER) for many years now (and still does) and is also on call regularly for BURTON CUMMINGS, who he's now performed with for over 20 years! Jeff also performed with Alex Lifeson and drummer John Rutsey in the first incarnation of RUSH, serving as their primary singer and bassist in the summer of 1968. He was replaced by GEDDY LEE in September 1968 before their second performance. When Jeff was just a teenager, he tasted fame early when he joined the group OCEAN who went on to have the MILLION selling hit song “Put your Hand in the Hand”. He has also spent time performing with GOWAN, MOLLY JOHNSON and the Infidels, RONNIE HAWKINS, released a well received solo album and also performs sometimes as a duo with GERRY FINN. We go deep into his past including his beginnings when he came to live in Toronto from Chicago and our chat encompasses his entire career. ENJOY! Hosted on Acast. Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of the Talk Music podcast! WOW I’m so excited about this one as my guest is GORDIE JOHNSON from BIG SUGAR! Gordie Johnson has earned numerous gold and platinum records with his band Big Sugar, and as producer/musician with Gov't Mule, Taj Mahal, North Mississippi Allstars, Toots Hibbert, Dennis Alcapone, Leroy Sibbles, Willi Williams, Nashville Pussy, Joel Plaskett, The Trews and Default. We chat about why JACK WHITE recently proclaimed the album 500 Pounds as the BEST blues-based album to ever come out of Canada! (also my first gold album on my Hypnotic label!) Gordie goes into detail about how he originally met Jack as a kid at a gig in AUSTIN, TX when he was the drummer for the band GOOBER AND THE PEAS, opening for BIG SUGAR. Jack burned out his 500 Pounds cassette and, a couple of decades later, was excited to re-release the album on his THIRD MAN label, letting the entire world know how much it meant to him growing up. We also go deep into Gordie’s early beginnings, how I ended up signing him to my label and co-producing the BIG SUGAR debut album, earning the EDISON award in Holland for best blues album. Further discussion revolves around how BIG SUGAR broke wide open with the video for “Sleep in Late," and that exposure resulted in opening gigs for BB KING, ARETHA FRANKLIN and RAY CHARLES! We then delve into the making of the 500 pounds album and how Gordie worked his magic in the studio. Enjoy part one of his long, illustrious career! Hosted on Acast. 06 Nov 2024 | Season 4, Episode 14: Bob Roper | 02:18:32
Hi everybody and welcome to another episode of the TALK MUSIC podcast! My guest this week is BOB ROPER! This is a great, entertaining deep dive into his illustrious career. Bob has done it all! From booking concerts at university to doing major label promo, to working for top concert promoter MICHAEL COHL doing marketing. Bob then became an A&R guru at WARNER Music where he signed acts such as HONEYMOON SUITE, BLUE RODEO and FROZEN GHOST. He also helped ALANNAH MYLES and RUSH get their US careers going. Before joining Warner, he spent time as tour manager of SUPERTRAMP who, then at the peak of their career, ended up playing Madison Square Garden. After leaving Warner, Bob jumped into management working closely with SHARON LOIS AND BRAM, where he brought them to another level before moving on to handle A&R/management for the SRO/ANTHEM company (home of RUSH, GOWAN, MAX WEBSTER & CONEY HATCH). Following that, Bob ran his own management company (GOWAN, MOLLY JOHNSON) and then taught at the HARRIS INSTITUTE for 30 years! Wanting to be closer to home, Bob spent a couple of years working at the PRECISION manufacturing company and he just recently retired. I truly loved this interview as I also had a chance to THANK Bob for taking a chance on me as Producer of the debut album for HONEYMOON SUITE. His faith in me and the massive success of the 4 Top 10 singles (and TRIPLE PLATINUM sales of the album) was a game changer for me and changed my life forever!! Take a listen, there’s lots of interesting stories in this one and I can honestly say Bob really is another one of the really good guys out there. ENJOY! Hosted on Acast. 29 Nov 2024 | Season 4, Episode 15: Les Stroud | 02:02:58
Hi everybody, welcome to another episode of The Talk Music Podcast! I’m thrilled to announce my guest is LES STROUD! Best known as the producer, creator and star of the hit TV series SURVIVORMAN, Les is also an accomplished musician/songwriter. His music is a rich tapestry of rock, world, prog rock, folk and blues, and it reflects his deep connection to nature. Steve Vai, Bruce Cockburn, Colin Linden and Slash have all lent Les their musical talents for his recordings. Les has guested on stage with Journey, Alice Cooper, Blues Traveler, Steven Stills, Chicago, Randy Bachman, Tommy Shaw, James Cotton, Dave Mason and Slash (who’s latest solo album Les performs on). Les has always operated in two lanes: his Survivorman and music careers, the latter being his most recent focus. His latest album MOTHER EARTH, produced by MIKE CLINK (“Appetite for Destruction” by Guns N’ Roses), blew me away. Some song clips are sprinkled throughout. I loved chatting with Les about his beginnings, both our experiences at Fanshawe college, his remarkable journey as a survival expert, and of course his lifelong passion for using music to express his love for our planet. This in-depth chat took place the day after I saw Les perform as a guest on harp at a truly magical Bruce Cockburn concert. Afterwards, surrounded by nature at his well-hidden cottage, we enjoyed a hot sauna, cold beer and a quick dip in the lake. A blissful time I will always remember. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. Hi everybody, Happy New Year! I’m stoked to post this chat with my first guest of 2025: Mediterranean artist extraordinaire PAVLO! Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo’s amazing journey to touring concert halls around the globe is most impressive. Over his 20-year career, he’s released 17 albums and 4 PBS TV specials, including his latest which was filmed in Santorini! Two of his albums went GOLD, and he had a Top 10 Billboard hit with “FANTASIA.” In 2002, Pavlo won a lawsuit against R&B mega stars R-Kelly and Jay-Z, who sampled his music for their hit song “Fiesta.” Pavlo has performed for King Charles and worked/toured with artists such as Jose Feliciano, Olivia Newton John and The Tenors. We also talk about his continuous growth in popularity by orchestrating the release of 4 PBS specials, allowing him to tour constantly all over North America. Hi everybody, my truly special Talk Music guest for this episode is ESTONIAN PIANIST KRISTJAN RANDALU, who exists among the most sought-after piano players of his generation, carrying the torch in both the improvised world of jazz and the traditional realm of classical music. Between creating his own original blend of contemporary jazz as a leader and collaborating with several generations of respected musicians, Randalu has brought his music to some of the world’s most renowned jazz festivals and concert halls. The prestigious magazine Jazz Times describes Kristjan’s playing as an “open invitation to an unnameable exotic land." At the same time, he is viewed as an esteemed interpreter of a broad spectrum of contemporary and classical music, performing alongside internationally acclaimed orchestras and conductors. We chat about how Kristjan was born in Estonia's capital Tallinn and how his family escaped Communist rule by relocating to Germany where he graduated from the Stuttgart Music University. Kristjan then went on to study at The Royal Academy of Music in London, followed by the Manhattan School of Music where he attained an additional master´s degree. We also delve into some of his most recent recordings including Sisu (awarded Jazz Album of the Year at the 2023 Estonian Music Awards) and Schumann’s Dichterliebe (Berlin Classics, 2024) whereby Randalu has not only deepened his musical ties to the classical world, but presented a truly original recasting of one of the Romantic repertoire’s cornerstones. We discuss his recordings with saxophonist Dave Liebman (Mussorgsky Pictures Revisited), Bodek Janke (Double Standard) and his album “Absence,” produced by Legendary owner of the ECM label, Manfred Eicher. Coming soon, his collaboration with Martin Kuuskmann (Schubert Voyage, release in March 2025 on Berlin Classics). Kristjan's list of musical partners include: Eivind Aarset, Mark Guiliana, Dieter llg, Marilyn Mazur, Nils Petter Molvaer, Claudio Puntin, Nguyen Le, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Petros Klampanis, Dhafer Youssef, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the New Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the London Symphony, Dennis Russell Davies, Paavo Järvi, Kristjan Järvi and Maria Schneider. With a discography of over 50 albums under his belt (including a Grammy-nominated recording) and numerous awards to his name (including “Jazz Artist of the Year” and “Jazz Composer of the year” in Estonia), Randalu’s prolific body of work continues to grow in breadth and quality. His unique voice is becoming internationally more and more important. This was for me a most interesting deep dive into an amazing musician and fellow Estonian! 11 Feb 2025 | Season 5, Episode 3: Mari Sild | 00:54:09
In part 2 of my feature on Interesting Estonian Personalities, my guest on the Talk Music Podcast is Mari Sild—an extraordinary artist and scientist who seamlessly blends both worlds to inspire, innovate, and make a difference: By day, as a Senior Project Manager in clinical research, she plays a key role in developing new medications for migraines, hemophilia, and cancer, with past experience spanning work in cardiovascular, infectious diseases, immunology, ophthalmology, and oncology treatments. Beyond the science, Mari is also a passionate and boundary-pushing musician. Trained as a classical pianist in Estonia, she later forged her own path, creating a genre she calls Nordic fusion—a mesmerizing blend of the likes of jazz, alt-pop, and indie rock. You can find her performing in clubs and festivals, or composing and releasing songs in various languages. Her recent collaboration with Cuban musicians led to what is likely the world’s first-ever salsa song in Estonian—a true testament to her love for musical storytelling across cultures. We dive into her childhood in rural Estonia, learning to play her grandmother’s piano, touring with a symphony orchestra as a teenager and ultimately facing the difficult choice of whether to pursue music or science. We also talk about her love of travel, performing on trains (which I also love!), and her deep passion for protecting nature. It truly was a fun conversation I enjoyed very much. Mari leads a fascinating, multifaceted life, and you won’t want to miss this episode! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

09 Apr 2025 | Season 5, Episode 6: David Blamires | 01:08:43
Hi everybody, This Talk Music episode is a VERY special one for me personally. I am a Massive Pat Metheny fan, and vocalist extraordinaire DAVID BLAMIRES who sang and performed with Pat from 1986-1997 is my guest. David, for his vocal chops, took home 2 GRAMMY Awards for the albums Still Life (Talking) (in my top 5 desert albums of all time) and also We Live here. He also performed and sang on the Grammy award-winning album Imaginary Day. Our conversation took place about a month ago, shortly after David returned from one of his frequent tours in Italy, where he performs regularly with outstanding musicians, including jazz guitarist Antonio Onorato. A few days later, I had the wonderful opportunity to see David live with the superb rock-symphonic group Jeans ’n Classics. As a featured vocalist, he delivers powerful performances of classic material by The Who, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and more—accompanied by local orchestras across North America. David has enjoyed an incredible career doing what he loves—singing and performing. I loved diving into his early musical roots in Toronto, where his remarkable 3.5-octave vocal range and expressive style led to significant success in the jingle studio scene. Our chat then takes us through a pivotal moment in his journey: being invited to join Pat Metheny’s band after being recommended by David’s friends Canadian master luthier Linda Manzer and singer-songwriter Johnny Rutledge. This amazing opportunity led to his involvement in 3 great studio albums and extensive touring across the globe, with David eventually relocating to the burgeoning studio jingle scene in Chicago. David has continued to develop his artistry over the years, releasing a range of solo projects and collaborating with talents like Emilie-Claire Barlow, among others. Be sure to check out his latest release, MELT INTO ME. I really enjoyed this engaging chat with David and can’t wait to see him sing again! Enjoy the episode! Hosted on Acast. 08 Jun 2024 | Season 4, Episode 6: Lee Aaron | 01:33:49
Super excited to post this fun, entertaining and informative chat with LEE AARON as we go deep into her entire career. A recent inductee into CANADA’S WALK OF FAME, she is one of Canada’s most iconic vocalists; a songwriter, producer, and fearless re-inventor. Our chat includes how, at the age of 19, she released her first album THE LEE AARON PROJECT and how in 1984 she wrote METAL QUEEN which solidified her as a trailblazer for women in rock. Over the years it has become an enduring anthem of empowerment for men and women alike. We then chat about how Aaron went on to work with producers like BOB EZRIN (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd) and PETER COLEMAN (Blondie, Pat Benatar), with stories about later releases 1989’s BODYROCK and 1991’s SOME GIRLS DO, which both reached MULTI-PLATINUM status and included chart-toppers like “Whatcha Do To My Body” and “Hands On.” She’s shared stages with Heart, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Suzi Quatro, Sinead O’Connor, Mötley Crüe, Van Morrison, and more. Eighteen albums into her illustrious career, including 10 JUNO nominations, Aaron was also honoured with a permanent star on the ARTS WALK OF FAME in her former hometown (Brampton) for her contribution to Canadian Music. After a long hiatus to raise her family and a successful venture into jazz, our chat continues about how Aaron blazed back onto the scene in 2016 with the FIRE and GASOLINE and DIAMOND BABY BLUES, garnering rave reviews. I had the honour of co-managing her at this time with long time manager Pierre Paradis. With a wealth of new original material, she has since released another 5 albums, all of which she self-produced: a Christmas album, a live album and 3 studio albums: RADIO ON! (2021), ELEVATE (2022) and her latest release TATTOO ME (2024) [all recorded with Sean Kelly (guitar), John Cody (drums) and Dave Reimer (bass), who will be on tour doing dates in Canada and Europe this summer]. 22 Jul 2023 | Season 3, Episode 10: Mari Kalkun | 00:46:58
For this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast, I’m beyond excited to feature my interview with ESTONIAN folk sensation MARI KALKUN. Her music is rooted in deep, ancient ESTONIAN traditions that I believe will resonate with new listeners, as will her singing voice which seems to speak directly from the heart of the ESTONIAN forest. Her new album titled STORIES OF STONIA, just released on PETER GABRIEL’S Real World Records. It's a MUST listen! During our chat, we talk about her inspirations in making the album, along with her recent performance in front of 100,000 people in Tallinn at the YOUTH and SONG festival where they also featured one of her original compositions, SATA -SATA, which I feature before the start of our interview. We also chat about her background growing up in rural Estonia, her studio in the woods, her previous albums and musical influences, and more! “Kalkun is a musician whose work is a jewel in the crown of the rich ESTONIAN scene.” – Fiona Talkington, Songlines, The Talk Music Podcast features host Tom Treumuth, a Multi-Platinum music producer/manager/entrepreneur. 20 May 2023 | Season 3, Episode 6: Puuluup | 00:46:23
For this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast, I’m so excited to release this entertaining interview with NU-folk duo PUULUUP. Like myself, they are proud ESTONIANS and, as a relatively small country, ESTONIA breeds and exports some truly incredible artists! Mixing surrealism and modern folklore with the talharpa, a bowed lyre popular in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages, PUULUUP playfully combine these traditional instruments with loops and modern electronic effects, otherworldly harmonies, and quirky lyrics. I’ve added a brief sampling of their music before the interview and I’m confident if you check them out you’ll also become a fan.
