Tough balancing act right now between keeping people liquid and motivating the wrong behavior.

50/50 cofounder business partnerships are as important as getting married. Many jump into it without the proper due diligence and it destroys their businesses down the road. Its all about character and value.

If you're looking to open a restaurant, or you just lost everything in your restaurant, it could be the best time in HISTORY to start up your business in the next 6 months. 

With so many restaurants either closing or cutting staff, there are talented workers, real estate, land lords, and cheap equipment that are all available.

•Land lords want to get paid, meaning cheaper rent for you.

• People are hurrying to sell buildings and prices for real estate will be lower than ever. 

• New restaurant equipment will be cheaper, and used equipment will be sold as other businesses close their doors

• Hundreds of talented chefs, waiters, bar tenders, you name it, will be applying for new jobs after being laid off.

 With the government helping relieve the economy and businesses and programs like the PPP, you can get more help now than ever before. We're going to see resources for restaurants and small businesses trying to get their feet planted, and we could see low interest loans, subsidized loans, and maybe even grant money to help companies get back to business. 

I don't like the restaurant business, and I wouldn't recommend you start one, but now is the time to do it if you want to get back into it or start your dream!

A career is just a series of games. The key to winning is taking a step back early on and figuring out which game is worth playing and which game isn't. Too many people play the wrong games with stiff competition and shitty prizes and wonder why its hard to get ahead. How do you assess what games are worth playing? Is your goal to make money and so you can quit trading your time for money as soon as possible? Then ask yourself a series of questions: Is this game fun to play? If so, you’ll get a lot of people playing the game for fun and not for money. And it likely adds value to you and doesn’t add much value to others. People play it for selfish reasons. The shift was the moment we stopped pointing fingers and started taking the blame for things going wrong within our business.

Instead of texting the employees the night before about their shift we scheduled them out a week in advance. Even if we weren't sure exactly what they'd be doing. We overemphasized their schedules and set up automated emails and texts to constantly remind them as the day approached.

Instead of training them by walking around the warehouse pointing at things we spent time recording training videos with perfect voice overs. We quizzed them at the end of the training videos with real on-the-job problems.

In this episode, Shaan and I discuss the key to turning a job into a successful asset. We delve into the challenges of hiring and delegating, and how effective management can make all the difference in business growth and success.

High cost of living scares away most small business owners. How can I afford to pay my labor $20 or $30 per hour? In reality its a huge advantage to operate in these markets. If you can operate well you will win.

I've been getting a lot of questions on lead generation and consulting setups from people who have spotted holes in digital marketing for established companies. Is it a real opportunity?

I'm going to talk about hiring your replacement. Maybe you're growing. Maybe there's an opportunity to scale up, do more, go to the town next door, do more stuff, different stuff, whatever it might be. I've been there, and I’m going through it now with our real estate private equity company that we're building. In 2021, my life changed forever when I became an investor and customer of Shepherd, a recruitment company, enabling me to hire three talented employees from the Philippines who now play key roles in my real estate company's customer service team, managing 12 representatives and providing support to our customers. Through Shepherd's assistance, we have gained a competitive advantage by accessing overseas talent and expanding our workforce to 45 employees.

An update on Bolt Storage, my self storage / real estate private equity company:

In 2018 the self-storage arm grew as Bolt Storage purchased a facility at 53 Pinckney Road in Ithaca and added it to the operations at 1401.

2019 was a big year as Bolt acquired three properties in Erie County PA, a property in West Mifflin PA (Pittsburgh), and a facility in Lansing NY.

In January of 2021 the student storage division (Storage Squad) was sold and the self-storage facilities were rebranded under the Bolt Storage name.

By late 2020 and into early 2021 Bolt Storage was hitting on all cylinders, and with new financial partners on board, Bolt Storage began to grow quickly.

Gloversville and Newfield were acquired in the fall of 2020, and in early 2021 Shippenville, East Liverpool, Troy, Horseheads, Elmira and Southport were added to the operation.

As of May 2021, Bolt Storage owns and operates 20 facilities, 4,154 units and 536,300 rentable square feet of self storage in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania.

The media arm is also growing and Nick hopes to hire a manager for the Sweaty Startup.

The team is also growing fast. Nick has now hired 4 filipinos using supportshepherd.com - which he highly recommends. The team is now up to 13 employees.

This isn't for everyone. The last week has been mentally, emotionally and physically taxing.

Sam graduated from Penn State in May (less than 6 months ago) and is on pace to do $180k in 2019 in revenue hauling junk around Harrisburg PA. We hear from him on how he did it!

I attended a conference last week called Capital Camp in Columbia, Missouri. This is by no means a promotional ad for that conference, but I walked away with a clear head and some amazing insights into my strategy, my mindset, and how I manage the emotions and ego every entrepreneur deals with, especially with the Sweaty Startup Podcast and The Nick Huber Show. Everything was organized by my friend, Brent Beshore, and his partner Patrick O'Shaughnessy, both extremely accomplished investors. Just to give you an idea of the caliber of what I’m talking about, the average net worth of this conference was probably $10 million, roughly 280 attendees, and if I’m willing to bet, there were eight or nine billionaires. In short, there were a lot of bad-ass people that I had the opportunity of being around.

What is your definition of success? For me, my definition of success is money in the bank. Because money, in my opinion, is a direct reflection of how much value you've added to the world. But as I've gotten older, I consider success a happy life.
