24 May 2022Welcome to The Surveyor Hub Podcast00:02:56

I’m your host Marion Ellis. One of the questions I often get asked is what is the Surveyor Hub? And on one level it’s just a Facebook group, it’s a podcast. I see it as a way to feel part of a world and industry that can often leave us feeling, well a little bit isolated.

And I feel that too. As a woman of a certain age, a female surveyor with a background in residential defect and valuation claims I’ve often felt a little out on a limb. I run a small club for owners of surveying businesses and we get a lot from the power of connection - be it learning something new we can implement in our businesses or having a chat in one of our socials because we have not spoken to anyone all day.

And I really believe that the power of human connection has led us to do the work we do as surveyors from inspecting properties to finance and spreadsheets - the work of a surveyor is wide and varied. At its heart though is whatever shape and form it is, we help offer security and a roof over someone's head, safe, warm and dry.

And that is really what this podcast is about, I chat to surveyors and those working in the industry about why we do what we do, lessons learned along the way, highs and lows and the fun stuff too. I have a tendency to get things off my chest so you’ll also hear me talk about some of the things that matter to me and my own experiences such as being diagnosed with ADHD, being a visible female role model and all that comes with that and chasing that elusive work-life balance as a parent.

My business is called Love Surveying which tells you how enthusiastic I am about the people and our work - and I did toy with the idea of changing the name of this podcast, but well, it felt like another thing to do, and we’ve been around for a little while now.

You can keep in touch with me in several ways - we have The Surveyor Hub Facebook community group, you can sign up to join my email list, you can follow me on social media, you can rate, review and follow this podcast and tune in whenever and wherever you want. You can even Buy Me a Coffee.

Please do drop me a note or voice mail anytime, I’d love to hear from you, and I hope you enjoy this podcast.

25 Nov 2021080 The Love Surveying Mastermind00:04:50

The life of a surveyor can be a lonely one. Who do you talk to when you need to get advice, guidance and support that you need? Trying to work out what's important to you can have you going round in circles when you only got yourself to discuss it with. It's so easy to get overwhelmed and an overwhelmed mind does nothing.

But it doesn't have to be that way. That's why I created The Love Surveying Mastermind, for surveyors who love what they do. It’s for those who want to be more intentional about the business and career they're building.

What Is Covered:

- What is The Love Surveying Mastermind

11 Nov 2021076 Pricing Your Surveys for Profit00:11:40

Do you know what it costs to run your business? Perhaps you earn enough, you do all right, and don't think it's right or possible to charge a higher fee than you already do. Either way, every business has an ebb and flow when it comes to money. Whether you do project work and have a plan and budget, or you work harder some months of the year, make hay while the sun shines as they say.

Balancing cash flow in your business isn't always easy. If you haven't come across the Profit First method, then do your research. In many ways, making a profit is not rocket science. You just need to earn more money than you're spending. If you're not, there are two ways to tackle it: cut back to become more efficient or make more money through doing more or charging more.

- What it costs to run your business

- Deciding your work hours and earnings for Profit

28 Oct 2021072 Comparisonitis and Why You Need Competitors00:08:24

When you know who you are being in business or life, you aren't compelled to compete. Why? Because you're clear on who you serve, what you do, the value you bring to your clients and you are able to charge what you're worth.

And yet so many surveyors who run businesses, too often suffer from comparisonitis and have one eye on the competition, rather than doing the work to understand who their clients are, who want to hand money over to you, because they value the experience you bring as a surveyor.

What We Cover:

- How to do market research to explore your competitors

- Where to find help with marketing and building online presence

- How to differentiate yourself from the competitors in an authentic way

21 Oct 2021070 The Risk in Your Business00:10:03

At least once a week, a surveyor contacts me who has received a complaint or claim and doesn't know what to do, or is now struggling to obtain PII insurance. So if you find yourself in this situation, what do you do?

What We Cover: - How to accept your own part of responsibility for a complaint or a claim

- The benefits of being a member of RICS and having your business regulated

- Why it’s better that you are a limited company than a sole proprietor

- The importance of allocating time each week or month to work on your business

- The three areas you should focus on in your busines

07 Oct 2021066 What’s your motivation?00:08:12

A question I'm asked a lot by surveyors is “Should I work for myself or not?”

Maybe you are a student starting out. Maybe you’re employed but not being able to create the work life balance that you crave. Or you already work for yourself, but find that you are working ridiculously long hours and feeling like getting off the treadmill. As surveyors, you love what you do, but you struggle with running a business. And when you don't have a well run business, and you don't have good boundaries around your wellbeing and your personal life, things get messy, disorganised, and your risk of claims increases. So if you're asking yourself “Should I stay, or should I go?,” here are some things that can help you decide.

What We Cover: - How to discover your motivation for asking the question

- Where to look for solutions to your current situation

- The importance of personal development and education in business

- How to know when the time is right to start working for yourself

30 Sep 2021 Surveyors Get More Visibility00:08:00

When surveyors and trainees share their worries and fears about being a professional surveyor on social media, they typically fall into three categories. Firstly, they don't know how to use the tech or get overwhelmed by which platform is best. The second worry is not knowing what to say or post. In this episode, I am addressing these worries and offering tips and resources to help you overcome them.

What Is Covered:

- Which platform is best to use for surveyors

- What to keep in mind when writing your posts

- How to know who your audience is

- How to know if your content is engaging enough

20 Sep 2021Welcome Back to the Surveyor Hub Podcast!00:08:56

You know you're a surveyor when you've been waiting all summer for this podcast to return.

We are back now, and it’s been a tricky ride since we’ve learned about the outcome of the independent RICS review by Alison Levitt. I’ve had to take time to process what I've read and what I've experienced, not just as a member surveyor of RICS, but also as a member of the Governing Council. Like many of you, I too felt shock, disappointment, anger, and I felt hurt that the trust and confidence I put into something that I really believed in had been violated.

But I've reflected on the standards and regulations that surveyors follow, and they are still some of the best in the world. They make a difference every day to the lives of people and the clients we help them support. There are good people that work at RICS and they need our support. And if you can put yourself in a position to make a difference and to do good, then why wouldn't you? That's how I ended up on the Governing Council, and it’s how this podcast has come about, and how The Surveyor Hub Community has grown. Because surveying is not really about the construction and the buildings, it’s about people.

In the new season of The Surveyor Hub Podcast, there will be weekly conversations on surveying and life, but there will also be regular Women in Surveying panel discussions where women's voices are being put forward, where women step into visibility in order to make a difference in our industry. Finally, there will be short weekly podcasts about the business of surveying.

Join us in the new season, subscribe, rate, review and follow us because the more we feel connected and supported, the better we feel about what we do.
