Sweet Success: Building a Sugaring Empire with Sarah Herbst
Sarah Herbst's remarkable transformation from a struggling single mother to the "million-dollar sugarist" reveals what's possible when passion meets perseverance. Fourteen years ago, Sarah was living with her mom, jobless with a newborn baby, when she encountered someone performing sugaring at a spa. The elegant technique captivated her immediately - not just for its beauty benefits (it cleared up her eczema) but for the profound human connections it facilitated.
"When someone walks in the room to get a Brazilian with you," Sarah explains, "it's almost like they tell you things that they've told no one else. You bond with this person in such a special way." This realization became the foundation for her business philosophy when she eventually opened Sugar Bar in Ohio.
Her success didn't come overnight. Sarah candidly shares how she cried during her first attempts at sugaring and couldn't afford formal training initially. She developed her skills through relentless practice while building relationships with clients who valued both her technique and her authentic care. When opportunity arose to create her own business environment, she took the leap despite doubts about being "cut out" for ownership.
Today, Sarah manages two locations with thirteen employees, having strategically grown by one staff member per year initially. What makes her business model particularly meaningful is her commitment to hiring single mothers and women in recovery - creating opportunities for others facing challenges similar to those she once navigated. "If you have happy employees, you have a good business," she emphasizes, a philosophy that has clearly served her well.
Sarah's latest venture, SugarCon, represents her gift back to the sugaring community. This first-ever convention dedicated entirely to sugaring professionals takes place June 29-30 in Cleveland, bringing together brands, educators, and practitioners from across the industry. For 10 years now I’ve made my living sugaring an enormous clientele and for the last 5 years, I've been teaching esties all over the world how to master the art of body sugaring.
I've been able to go from scared single mama back then not knowing in a recession how I was going to feed my kids… to tripling my income and hiring a staff of esties and front desk dynamos to accommodate the growth. I've been able to help thousands of esties around the world to not only LEARN to sugar but BUILD their confidence and skills.
So today I am so jazzed to “relaunch” this SugarShow podcast actually. We had started this Show about 4 years ago and got so busy with our SugarMamas shop and teaching all the new ISU students how to sugar that we put it on the back burner.
Over the years I always tried to be brand neutral and focus on the techniques. I never shared my favorite things from sugar pastes to skincare companies I love and use…UNTIL NOW. Its time to take that SugarShow off the back burner and turn up the heat!
The sugaring industry is BOOMING…when I started not many people had heard of sugaring as an option and now its a THING! :). Using Advanced Minerals in Your Sugaring Room with Annie Mayo
On today’s podcast, we welcome Annie Mayo with Advanced Mineral Makeup.
Advanced Mineral Makeup is more than makeup. In fact, it is so much more that the work “makeup” shouldn’t even be used. It is a skin treatment that colors skin. And the best part, it is the perfect addition to an after-sugaring treatment! Advanced Minerals are made up of just that—minerals! These minerals are bacteria fighting, skin calming, inflammation fighting wonders. Annie suggests adding this as a finishing touch to your treatment because it will benefit everyone’s skin plus add a “finished” touch.
DURING TREATMENT: At the end of sugaring, you can add value to your client by using Advanced Minerals. There is a dry sunscreen to protect the skin, a powder to add anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory minerals to their skin, and they will leave with a finished look. This is ideal for your clients. We aren’t masking the issue like you would with regular makeup, we are treating the issue!
AFTER TREATMENT: This is an opportunity to teach your clients about skincare and what is best for their skin in between treatments. No junk makeup! No bad sunscreen! Once they see the benefits in action after their treatment, they will be ready to take better care and add-on product in order to keep everything healthy in between.
The important takeaway is over the counter contains bacteria—it can’t be helped. Minerals do not grow bacteria. Period.
Plus, with Advanced Minerals, you have four basic colors that you mix to create the perfect color. You don’t have to worry about having an abundance of products left on hand. Every person’s skin tone has a mix of these tones. These are affordable, comes with a tabletop display, and will keep everything so simple!
Then, we have to talk about sanitizing especially in today’s world. In order to make your supply last longer in the store, scrape the top off the powder onto a tissue—this will be what you use for that client. Then, using brushes you can apply. Have 2 or 3 sets of brushes on hand so that you can sanitize the brushes in between clients with brush cleaner. Clients with acne, rosacea, or sensitivities will not have to worry about cross contamination.
One thing to point out is our makeup in non-transferable. What that means in today’s world is that your makeup will stay on your face—even with mask wearing! There will be very slight residue, but it won’t pull off that makeup from your skin. Be safe, wear a mask, and treat your skin right!

Aaahhhh Summer. Sunshine, beaches, bikinis...and beautifully smooth skin. Music to an estheticians ears!
This is the busiest hair removal season for the beauty industry and the best time to build your clientele. Seasoned sugarists know they have a consistent tool to bring clients in the door no matter what time of year--even the hot summers. After 10 summers in the treatment room in hot California, here are my tips for keeping you and your clients cool and perfectly smooth.
8 Musts for Summer Sugaring Success:
Chill Out Your Room: Keep the temperature in your room around 70 degrees to keep your sugar paste consistent. When you are sugaring back to back, it is important to keep you cool and keep your clients body temperature down if they have been outside and their skin is warm. Year round have a fan oscillating to keep the air in your room circulating too!
Firm Up: Order a paste with a bit firmer consistency than you would in the cooler months. Your hands might be warm and the clients skin will warm up your paste as well. Work with your sugar supplier to find the right paste in their line up that will work in your climate. They know their line best and want you to be a huge success!
Hot Hands?: Do you tend to run hot yourself? Try dialing back your coffee consumption, use peppermint oil on the base of your neck to keep your internal temps cool, or try using a second glove on your sugar hand to keep your heat from softening that paste.
Powder Up Buttercup: Keep your powder (and a dry washcloth) closer at hand to keep sweaty areas in check. Don’t over powder as it will thicken up your paste. As you move over the area, you might need to dab with the wash cloth followed by another quick dusting of powder. If you get stuck, you can remove the paste with a warm washcloth and repowder the area. Don’t worry, you got this!
Cool Globes: I always keep cool globes in a skincare fridge for those clients whose faces get inflamed easily. After the sugaring treatment, use a calming gel (one of my faves is Hale & Hush Hydrate Gel) and roll the cool globes over the freshly sugared skin. Your client will feel extra cool and special and their skin will calm down quickly. Try a dusting of mineral sunscreen to kick things up a notch for luxury and sun protection too! My fave is Advanced Minerals!
Morning Appointments: Have a client that ALWAYS runs hot and sweats like crazy? Book them in the morning! No workouts or coffee before for this client either! Trust me, morning appointments for them will make a huge difference for both you and them.
Strips: I know we are super proud that we don’t need to use a pile of sticks and muslin strips like waxers do. It is a wise idea to keep some pellon or non-woven strips in your back bar for those times when the sugar gets too soft on the skin to remove. Simply remove any excess sugar with your ha

Is Your Business Legally Strong? Must Listen Episode with special guest Joey Vitale
This episode is a MUST LISTEN! Don’t make the mistake of picking a sugary sweet name for your biz without learning more from our guest, Joey Vitale from Indie Law.
When Joey Vitale was in college, he was bribed by his father to go to law school with a new car. He quickly realized he was not the ‘shark.’ Due to it not fitting, he started his own graphic design business. Through networking, he realized how many people in business had questions. So, he started a law firm to fill the need in order to help cut out the noise.
Many people go with less expensive solutions. The problem with that is there is one solution for everyone--which is not the right solution for everyone. Instead, Joey works with people to educate and empower them in their business decisions.
His law firm focuses on the must haves for a business and has solidified the process into programs for those starting their business.
There are two beliefs that are very common among business owners:
I can be under the radar while getting started
I am confident in starting
These two concepts cannot coexist. What ends up happening is you wake up one morning to an expanding business that has duct tape. It isn’t protected because when that step should’ve been completed, you were too small.
One of the first steps they need to do is acknowledge that this business is separate from you. It is very easy to take it personally. But absolutely none of it is attached to your worth as a human. That goes both ways--positive or negative. As long as you stay a sole proprietorship, you are connected to the business. This is why it is recommended that you start as an LLC and establish your business is important enough to be its own entity.
Beyond the mental state of mind of being a separate entity, being a Limited Liability Company protects you. In the worse case scenario, if you are ever sued, your personal assets are protected.
Once you are committed to forming an LLC you will find it is quite easy to setup. In Joey’s business, he has resources available to help guide you through the process.
Next--trademarks. With sugaring being our service, we get to have a ton of fun with the names. But here is the thing we all assume, an available domain name means the name isn’t taken. Wrong! A trademarked may exist and down the road, you may be told to change your business name.
Trademarks actually exist to protect the consumer more so than the business. Owners tend to think they are ‘calling dibs’ on the name and they don’t want anyone else using it. But, what trademark protections are really about is the consumer. So they get the brand that they are trying to get. For instance, someone selling shoes that are spelled “Nikee” instead of “Nike.”

What to Expect from a Skincare Distributor with special guests Wendi & Cee, Alexander’s Aesthetics
A business that sells to customers is the technical description of a distributor. Alexander’s is so much more than that!
Alexander’s Aesthetics started in the family. The love of skincare prompted him to purchase many many products over the years trying to find the best ones out there. In the end, this led to a formation of a very large company that was centered around education of doctors and estheticians. This ended up becoming our foundation--to educate and provide information for clients while they are trying to find the right products for them and their businesses.
Q: Wendy, when did you decide to jump into the family business? A: My mom took it over while I was an adult so I didn’t grow up with it. My husband and I both worked in the volatile business of tech in Colorado and decided we wanted something different. At the suggestion of my mother, we jumped into opening Alexander’s Aesthetics in Colorado. Once I opened the business, I definitely had a new-found respect for my mother and knowing exactly what she did day in and day out for work.
When you work with a good distributor, you get so much more. 16 years ago I started working with you, and here we are--teaching side by side!
Q: How do you choose a company like Sugar of the Nile to bring to your clients? A: We had been looking around for sugar at the request of some of clients but hadn’t been impressed with any of the companies. When we met Sugar of the Nile, we realized they were not only a wonderful family owned company with a solid product, but Emily was an exceptional person to work with. She was willing to join us at shows and provide education which is completely in line with our business.
Q: What are you looking for when selecting a new product? A: The things that we are looking for is a reputable company that is in it for a partnership, not as a product sales. They need to be willing to build us as well as us build them up. We test all of the products before bringing it on to ensure that it meets our standards. Cost is also something we look at in order to keep things affordable to our clients. At the end of the day, we try to provide a good sampling of products because there is so much out there. And, we want to make sure they have training and education that can be passed down--it is key.
You all do the vetting process for them! That is an amazing advantage.
One thing that we really talk about with our Sugar Tribe is to engage. It isn’t about just clicking and buying. It is about connecting with your audience. Be Tax Savvy in Your Business and Save Big with Special Guest Kenesha Coleman

Today, we dive into tax planning! Here is the key, tax planning should be throughout the entire year to avoid people scrambling for their documents. Plus, any deductions that you are trying to receive must take place during the year. You can’t earn more deductions once the year is complete.
There are several things you should be doing, but we are diving into the top 3!
Bookkeeping

Deductions
These three things all work together throughout the year!
Let’s dive into bookkeeping. What exactly is it? This means using an accounting software to track inflow and outflow of transactions that are categorized. Also, make sure you have a separate business account. Everything should be separate for tracking and potential auditing.
Quote: You cannot manage what you don’t track!
Second tip is setting aside money for taxes. Just because you charge $100 for a service, that doesn’t mean it is all yours. Some covers expenses and some covers taxes. The best policy is to set aside 25-30% of your income in a separate bank account. Best part is, once taxes are due, you won’t need to have a payment plan. By doing this, you will have a stack of cash that is available to cover that bill. Make sure you listen to this section—so many good tips and info about setting this up and what can happen without doing it!
The third tip is maximizing tax deductions. Most people are missing out here and it blows my mind! There are some simple questions about your business that can earn you some extra deductions. Mileage is a big one! We discredit how much those small trips add up to.
We need to flip our mindset on deductions. It is a smaller list to view things that you can’t deduct, rather than what you can deduct. Plus, there is no penalty for making a deduction that maybe shouldn’t be there when you file. This is where bookkeeping comes into play. Track and account for EVERYTHING. An accurate record allows you to take a deduction or credit for it.

How to PAY Yourself as an Employee or IC with The Beauty CPA
Now that you have (or your business has) decided how to categorize yourself as an employee or an independent contractor, its time to get PAID!
In Part Two of this Series, Kenesha and Shannon explore how to make sure you get paid properly depending on your business. Working smarter to be strong and sweet in 2021!!
What is an Independent Contractor or Self-Employed Beauty Professional?
You are the business owner
May receive Form 1099 from salon/spa owner or you are receiving monies from your clients and accounting for it yourself
Responsible for paying and remitting all taxes - federal and state income and payroll taxes
How you should pay yourself depends on how the business is structured:
Sole Proprietorship/SMLLC/General Partnership/MMLLC:
take an owner’s draw from your business banking account.
Best if done at regular intervals and amounts
Best if transfer in electronic
Still responsible for all taxes
Misconception: If you don’t take an owner’s draw you will not be taxes
All Net Income is subject to tax, so pay yourself what you want
Corporations:
Owners are put on payroll and paid a “reasonable wage”
Corporation withholds federal and state income and payroll taxes

Are you a seasoned sugar professional who is swamped with work as the world starts to reopen? Are clients flocking to your doorstep after months of hearing about the wonders of sugar through friends, family and social media?
This is a great problem to have…right? Even though it’s a wonderful feeling to have a solid client base, it’s also exhausting when you can’t accommodate everyone who’s seeking out your services.
If this problem feels familiar, you’ll definitely want to tune into this week’s episode of The Sugar Show. Here’s a sneak peek into the SugarMama’s playbook for streamlining and expanding your sugar business.
First, take a moment to recognize your success. There was once a time when you didn’t know how you would get to this point, and now you have. Be proud of yourself and acknowledge that you are going to overcome this hurdle, too!
Streamline your business. Most of the time, immediately looking to expand is a mistake. First, look to the ways that you can streamline your business operation and make your hours count!
Bring on an assistant! Most people don’t need to hire another aesthetician in the early stages of their business. Instead, bring on someone who can take administrative duties off your plate, so you can really focus on your sugar ball.
Expand your business…but only after you have completed all of the above steps! We can’t emphasize enough how important it is to attend to your own house before you start bringing new hires into the mix.

In 2009, host Shannon Sophia had just gone through a divorce, sold her Lake Tahoe day spa and moved to a new city with her two boys as a single mom. She set up a small skin care studio and was in the midst of creating a new client base when the recession hit, and suddenly many of her clients were no longer able to justify including beauty services in their weekly or even monthly routines.
However, Shannon began to notice a trend: while she lost the majority of her facial clients, her hair removal clients stayed. But how was she supposed to set herself apart from the many other hair removal specialists in her area? Suddenly, it all clicked! The answer was sugaring.
At the time, Shannon had only taken an intro to body sugaring class and was, to be quite honest, terrible at it. However, she wholeheartedly dedicated herself to perfecting her craft by focusing on her sugar ball and practicing on family and friends. Once she began offering sugaring services at her studio, she quickly met every revenue goal she has set for herself and now can’t imagine doing hair removal any other way!
