11 May 2022Lynn Hill00:46:31

Elite climber Lynn Hill shares her struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

It’s hard to overstate just how impactful, badass, and groundbreaking Lynn has been on the sport of rock climbing and beyond. If you are a climber then you are standing on her shoulders. Lynn has been a dominant force in pretty much every discipline of climbing. She has won world cups as a comp climber, she was the first woman to onsight 8a, she was the first woman to climb 5.14, and most famously, she was the first human, man or woman, to free climb El Cap… as well as the first human, man or woman, to free it in a day.  With her famous line, "It goes, boys," Lynn smashed not only the glass ceiling on the sport of rock climbing, but also egos, doubts, and the common conventions of rock climbing at the time. Lynn continues to climb at an incredibly high level to this day, as well as champion gender equality and environmental issues as a fierce and outspoken advocate. We look back at her incredible career and life through the lens of struggle, and cover a lot of new territory in this chat that is both inspiring and useful for climbers of all level.

09 Dec 2022Guy McNamee00:43:50

Elite climber Guy McNamee shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Guy was born in Haiti, raised in Canada, and has been a force in boulder and lead competitive climbing throughout his teen years… which he only just recently moved beyond. Guy is a 7 time national champion, most recently taking the top spot in boulder at Canadian Nationals and then following that up a few days later, on his 20th birthday, by taking lead nationals as well. Guy is very focused on his training but he’s also a pretty normal 20-year-old… working at Starbucks to pay the bills and messing around with his brother and friends, all the while keeping his eye on the long game in this sport he loves so much. The future is bright for Guy McNamee.

29 Sep 2022Tommy Caldwell01:10:43

Elite climber Tommy Caldwell shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Tommy Caldwell is quite possibly the greatest all around rock climber of this generation... and perhaps of all time. He has five first free ascents on El Cap alone, including the Dihedral Wall which went unrepeated for 12 years, and of course the Dawn Wall, widely considered the hardest big wall climb ever. Tommy was also the first person to free The Nose in under 12 hours and free two El Cap routes in a day. With partner Alex Honnold, Tommy freed the Yosemite Triple Crown, bagged the first ascent of the Fitz Traverse in Patagonia, and holds The Nose speed record at under two hours. But can he sport climb? Yep, he can. Tommy put up the FA on Flex Luthor, which he didn’t even bother giving a grade because he’s Tommy, it went unrepeated for 18 years… and now has been suggested at 15b which would make it the first 9b in the World. Beyond climbing, Tommy is a rad dad and a tireless activist for environmental causes. There's so much good stuff in this 60 minute chat you're going to want to listen to it 10 times.

03 Nov 2022Matt Fultz00:58:23

Elite climber Matt Fultz shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Matt is one of the world’s strongest and most accomplished climbers. He has topped multiple V16s – Grand Illusion, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Hypnotized Minds, and Sleepwalker (whaaaaat?!?!). What’s perhaps more impressive than how hard Matt pulls, is how hard he tries and how dedicated he is to his craft. This guy knows how to project, and has a lot of insight on the subject. Speaking of insight, Matt knows how to coach… because he is one. Alongside his wife Hailey, they run a performance coaching business called OTG Strength where they create custom training and nutrition plans for climbers looking to level up. 23 Aug 2023James Lucas01:10:47
Elite climber James Lucas shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game     -

As a climber, James is incredibly accomplished and well-rounded, with impressive big wall sends that include freeing El Cap’s Freerider in a day along with loads of other big wall sends in the valley including the FA of Final Frontier, a Grade V 13b in the Valley. And while James is perhaps most experienced and known for his work on big walls, he has pushed himself into other disciplines with the goal of sending V10 boulders and 5.14 sport, the former of which he has done, and the latter of which he is zeroing in on. Beyond climbing, James is a prolific writer and photographer. He served as Senior Associate Editor of Climbing Magazine for 30 issues and has contributed to countless other climbing outlets, from Rock and Ice to Outside Mag to the Alpinist. This guy has some of the absolute best stories from his dirtbag days living in his Saturn and the caves of Yosemite, climbing with some of the biggest names in our sport, and bringing curiosity and stoke to all that he takes on.

10 Jun 2022Expert Analysis: Tactics with Eric Hörst01:02:38

GOAT Coach, Eric Hörst, joins the show to look back at Season 1's interviews with 10 of the biggest names in climbing to see what themes and takeaways there are through the lens of Tactics.

-

Eric literally wrote the book on Training for Climbing, which has numerous foreign translations and sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide. In addition to that, and 7 other books to his name, Eric is a member of the International Rock Climbing Researchers Association and is a published researcher. He’s been climbing for 45 years and coaching climbers for more than 30 of those. Eric’s love of climbing is perhaps only surpassed by his love of helping other climbers, of all abilities, to level up their training and performance, which he is doing with his business PhysiVantage. Eric is about to drop a masterclass on tactics, so chalk up!

-

Topics:

  • Pursuit of mastery
  • Efficiency on route
  • Looking at climbing through a long lens
  • Rethinking a crux sequence
  • Sub-maximal training to improve top end
  • The importance of the people you climb with

17 Nov 2023Dave MacLeod: Part I01:19:54

Elite climber Dave MacLeod shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game

-

Hailing from the highlands of Scotland, Dave has methodically worked his way up to the highest levels of the sport, and sits at the very top when it comes to heady trad ascents on the notoriously poorly protected gritstone in his backyard. He has bouldered up to V15 (8C), climbed 5.14d (9a), free soloed up to 14a (8b+), and put up E11 trad. His First Ascents are too many to name, but most notably he put up the world’s first E11 trad route, Rhapsody, as well as Echo Wall which might even be harder. From boulders to big walls, rock to ice to mixed… Dave has a truly unique ability to zero in on very hard moves, with very scary exposure, and systematically break it down to a manageable process until the thing can be done. Beyond his performance on rock, Dave has been contributing to the sport for decades now, as a researcher, author, blogger, and YouTuber. He holds an undergrad degree in sports science and physiology, and dual masters, in exercise science and human nutrition. He knows his stuff and we dive deeeeep in this two-parter!

27 Apr 2023Chris Kalous01:24:10
Host of the hit climbing podcast The Enormocast, Chris Kalous shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.    -   Chris Kalous has been the voice of climbing for over a decade now, bringing more than 250 episodes of The Enormocast to our ears and our hearts as we drive to the crag, run laps in the gym, or fold laundry. His voice, wit, and stoke are instantly identifiable, and if you’ve been a climber for more than a few days you’ve surely enjoyed your fair share of Enormocast episodes. As a climber, Chris has embarked on epic trips the world over, put up impressive first ascents, and tackled climbs so sketchy my palms were sweating just talking with him about them in this interview. He’s a climber to the core, with a dirtbag’s heart and a punk rock aversion to authority and regulation. He’s also a dad, a musician, and a guy who’s trying to keep the stoke as he enters new chapters in his climbing life. 16 Dec 2022Jonathan Siegrist01:18:57

Elite climber Jonathan Siegrist shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

How accomplished is Jonathan Siegrist? Well, he’s climbed six 5.15s… JUST THIS YEAR! That ticklist includes Event Horizon, a route he bolted that’s at least 15b and very well may be harder. It’s certainly one of, if not the, hardest routes in North America. Earlier this year he had an unbelievably impressive trip to Spain where he sent three 15a's, two 14d's, and a handful of other 5.14s. Remember I’m just talking about the past 12 months here. His accomplishments on rock, from 5.14 on gear, to V14 boulders, to now countless 5.14 / 5.15 sport climbs… are crazy impressive and he's only getting better. Beyond his insanely impressive climbing resume, J Star has bolted hundreds of routes, many of them now super classic. This guy is as real as it gets, his stoke level is off the charts, and I know your’e going to get a TON out of this conversation.

Dru Mack is a master of endurance, perseverance, and psych. He grew up climbing on the long overhung sandstone routes of the Red River Gorge, and after sending pretty much everything there, he’s now tackling some of the toughest sport climbs in the western US and in Spain. How good is he? Well, in 2021, Dru put down 21 5.14s, including the insanely hard 14d, Life of Villains. He’s an incredibly hard working, gracious, and very cool person who shares actionable beta for pros to weekend warriors, and then opens up about mental health, addiction, mentorship, and grief. If you're a human, you will gain a lot from this conversation.

27 Apr 2022Justin Salas00:45:53

Elite climber Justin Salas shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Justin is a ridiculously strong boulderer and comp climber, with a seriously impressive resume including two IFSC silver medals, five national championships, and a world championship to his name. He’s a V-double-digit climber who just keeps getting stronger… oh, and he also happens to be blind. But if you think that holds him back you’re wrong. He was the first para-climber ever to send V11, and he’s also pushing into some super hard territory on sport routes. Did I mention he’s blind??? Justin is one of the kindest, most impressive, and stoked people I’ve ever had the pleasure of interviewing. And as you’ll hear in this chat, he is a really informed climber and has a ton of great advice for us. Beyond the crag, Justin is doing inspiring work to make climbing more accessible to the visually impaired, and he’s really pushing the sport forward for para-climbers as a member of the Adaptive Climbing Group.

18 Oct 2023Eddie Taylor00:57:06

Elite climber Eddie shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game

-

Eddie pretty much does it all – boulder, sport, big wall, ice, alpine… he’s stoked, he’s driven, and he’s incredibly fit on vertical terrain. Just a few highlights from many, Eddie has freed Moonlight Buttress, the notoriously challenging Grade V, 12d multipitch in Zion. He’s done The Nose of El Cap in a day along with other big routes in the valley, and lately has been spotted linking up heinously long bike rides with fast and light multi-pitch climbing with his friend and recent guest of the pod, Nina Williams. He has also summited Mt Everest! And he has accomplished all of this while also holding down a full time job as a high school chemistry teacher, track and field coach, husband, and father. Eddie shows that we are ALL capable of greatness if we put our hearts and minds to it.

06 Oct 2022Allison Vest01:15:05

Elite climber Allison Vest shares her struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Allison Vest has been a force on plastic, rock, and social media. Allison was the Canadian National Boulder Champion in 2018 and 2020, and the National Lead Champion in 2019. Recently she has stepped back from the comp circuit to focus on bouldering outdoors, where she has topped out some serious rigs, including V13s Masterpiece and Blackout at Joe’s, the first female ascent of V13 The Terminator in Squamish, and the FFA of V14 Show Your Scars. She also occasionally wears a rope to claim some hard sport sends, including the FFA on the 14a test piece, Throwin' The Houlihan at Wild Iris. Beyond climbing you’ve no doubt been highly entertained by Allison’s IG feats of strength and parlor tricks which are mind blowing… along with her thoughtful posts on women in sports and body image, which have found a way to cut through internet noise and resonate with millions in the climbing community and beyond. Allison and I hit the ground running in this interview, which is packed with relatable struggles, actionable insights, and a good dose of not taking ourselves too seriously.

Sasha was just the third woman in the World to climb the grade 9a (5.14d), and she has more than 30 First Ascents and First Female Ascents to her name. Some of her sport FFAs include 14d/9a Era Vella in Spain, 14c/8c+ Southern Smoke and Pure Imagination at the Red River Gorge, and she has onsighted multiple 5.14a / 8b+ routes. She is the first woman to free the north face of the Eiger by way of Magic Mushroom, a technical 2,000 foot climb; she was the first woman to free Bella Vista, a big wall in the Dolomites with difficulty up to 5.14b / 8c; and Sasha was the first woman and only the second human to free the Trilogy in the Canadian Rockies - three separate climbs that feature 5.14 pitches and total 9000 vertical feet. With all of those groundbreaking wins one might assume things come easy for Sasha but let me assure you that she is no stranger to struggle. Just a couple years ago Sasha underwent double hip surgery where doctors cut through muscle and bone to such an extreme she had to learn how to walk again… and that’s just one example of many struggles that we explore in our chat. Sasha is as dedicated as they come, both on and off the wall, and is a tireless voice for climbing access, women’s rights, and the environment.

13 Sep 2023Michaela Kiersch01:07:08
Elite climber Michaela Kiersch shares her struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game     -

Michaela Kiersch has been crushing for decades. She’s the first woman to climb both 5.15a and V14 (9a+ / 8B+). The 5.15 was La Rambla, and as Michaela shares today, she doesn't feel like she has yet hit her limit in sport grades. Other notable sport sends for Michaela include the 14d/9a ascent of the Chris Sharma line Dreamcatcher in Squamish, a first female ascent of another classic Sharma route, Necessary Evil, and pretty much everything at the Red River Gorge, including the 14c FFA of The Golden Ticket. On the blocks she’s got a few V14 (8B+) sends to her name, including Tigris Sit and New Base Line, both in Magic Wood. And what’s perhaps more impressive than her ticklist is the fact that she’s done pretty much all of it while being a full-time student and youth coach. If you want to get psyched on what we’re all capable of accomplishing with busy lives and limited time to train… you’re in the right place.

04 Jan 2024Drew Ruana: Climbing Hard Everyday, Never Hang Boarding, Progression, and When to Walk Away01:25:10

Elite climber Drew Ruana shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game

-

Drew started climbing at Smith Rock at the age of 3, and it didn’t take long for him to climb the place out. His focus in those earlier years was on sport climbing, and the kid was a crusher, sending Just Do It, the first 5.14C / 8C+ in the US, at 15 years old. Drew also dominated on the youth comp circuit, taking first place twice at US Youth Nationals in sport and once in bouldering.

More recently, Drew has developed a passion for sending and developing the hardest outdoor rigs he can find. Are you ready to have your mind blown? At the time of our interview, Drew had sent 90 V14s (8B+), 37 V15s (8C), and 10 V16s (8C+). Put in a bit of perspective, I believe Daniel Woods has sent 8 V16s and Will Bosi has sent two. Drew has 10. It's outrageous to think about what the future holds for this guy. This conversation is thoughtful and full of incredibly useful insights for climbers of all levels.

21 Jun 2023Chris Sharma01:06:33

Elite climber Chris Sharma shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

Chris needs absolutely zero introduction but it’s worth hitting a few of the highlights because it’s so absolutely mind boggling when you’re reminded what he has achieved in this sport. At just 14 years old he won the adult US bouldering nationals. At 15 he freed the hardest route in North America at the time, 14c Necessary Evil. At just 20 years old Chris sent the world’s first consensus 5.15a, Ceuse’s Biographie / AKA Realization. He was also the first to climb 15b with Jumbo Love, and the second to climb 15c, just after Adam Ondra, as the two of them worked together on La Dura Dura. Chris also took deep water soloing to groundbreaking new levels when he sent the king line of Es Pontas, 15a, in Mallorca. He later put down a 15b deep water solo, Alasha, which is the hardest of the discipline. Chris has been dominating for so long, that it might be easy to simply refer to his groundbreaking contributions in the past tense… but that would be a mistake. Chris, just a couple months ago, sent his HARDEST route EVER, Sleeping Lion in Siurana, of which he gave the grade of 5.15c.

Chris climbs with such flow, and carries himself with an almost mythical yogi demeanor, it’d be understandable to just assume there hasn’t been a whole lot of struggle for him throughout his three decades at the top of the sport. But as you’ll hear today, there’s been plenty of struggle, both physically and mentally. Today Chris opens up with stories that I don’t believe he’s ever shared before.

14 Dec 2023Magnus Midtbø & Till Gross: Learning from the Best Climbers01:03:51

Elite climber Magnus Midtbø returns to The Struggle with his business partner, Till Gross, to share their perspective on how climbers can improve at the sport by accessing A-list coaches and other climbing resources online.

-

Magnus and Till are developing a pretty ambitious and impressive online coaching platform that includes some of the biggest names in the sport including Adam Ondra, Alex Megos, Hazel Findlay, Dave MacLeod, and Daniel Woods just to name a few. And in developing these courses, Magnus and Till are learning how us climbers can best absorb new information and apply it to our training and climbing… something that can help us all to level up, whether we work with a coach in person, scrape YouTube for the latest training advice, or enroll in Adam Ondra’s course that he’s building with Magnus and Till. We also touch on other topics, including the one thing Magnus learned when he was a newer climber that totally changed the game for him, what Magnus’s big climbing goal is these days, and the YouTube video idea that ended up being just too sketchy for Magnus to go through with. Hint… it involves cheese.

07 Sep 2023Dr. Tyler Nelson on Finger Strength01:27:42

Dr. Tyler Nelson dives deep into all things finger strength training

-

Tyler is bringing cutting edge science to the world of training for climbing and, in the process, he is blowing up myths of training that we’ve long thought to be true and helping climbers, from pros to everyday climbers, identify exactly what types of training will take their climbing performance to new heights. In graduate school Tyler completed a dual doctorate/masters degree in exercise science with an emphasis on tendon loading and rehabilitation. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA and teaches conferences worldwide on a host of topics. Get ready to get strong!

-

Topics:

  • The difference between strength training protocols and hypertrophy protocols, and why many climbers are getting it wrong
  • How to balance off the wall finger strength training with on the wall climbing
  • Exploring the various methodologies of finger strength training
  • Why using a fingerboard doesn’t make sense for training strength in experienced climbers
  • Why most climbers are doing too many hang board reps that are too long for building strength
  • Proper set/rep schemes for building strength
  • Whether a no hang protocol like Emil’s viral routine is actually beneficial
  • Minimal edge training vs just climbing
  • The significant benefit of training fingers on an un-level edge
  • How to switch things up to build muscular endurance

07 Dec 2023Magnus Midtbø01:22:53

Elite climber Magnus Midtbø shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game

-

Magnus is a wildly successful YouTuber, with more than two million subs at the time of this recording, and his videos – a mix of climbing content and general feats of strength and resilience – have amassed hundreds of millions of views. He's also an elite climber with incredible accomplishments indoors and out. In his teens and twenties, Magnus was a dominant force on the IFSC circuit, logging over a dozen wins including Youth World Champion. He was, and still is, one of the strongest climbers in the world – with sport ascents up to 5.15b (9b), and onishghts up to 5.14c (8c+). He’s also notched many 9a and 9a+ routes, including Thor’s Hammer in Flatanger. These days you’re more likely to find Magnus climbing impressively hard boulders in his gym in Oslo, sometimes on video with crusher guests including Adam Ondra and Will Bosi… and sometimes just by himself, no cameras, to unwind after a hard day of editing his latest million-view video. In this conversation, Magnus opens up fully about his struggles, learnings, fears, and dreams.

30 Mar 2022Favia Dubyk00:48:23

Elite climber Favia Dubyk shares her struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game.

-

If there’s anyone who personifies struggle, and the the breakthroughs that can come from it, Favia is that person. She almost died, multiple times, as she battled cancer and the complications from treatment; she has faced, and continues to face, racism and discrimination on and off the rock; she battled her way back from debilitating injuries and atrophy post-cancer… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Favia is a doctor, a ridiculously strong climber, an ultimate ninja warrior, and a low-ball boulderer with many V-double-digits to her name. Her story is as unbelievable as it is inspiring.
