Teaser: The Strands That Bind Us
00:00:58
The Strands That Bind Us – Matthew and Drew are best friends who share a passion for tattoos, travel and hair. They’re both professional hairstylists who have worked at fashion weeks around the world, styled some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood and had their work featured in countless magazines. But both their careers began unconventionally- they began cutting their own hair in their teens, then became college athletes who decided to follow their true passion- styling hair. Their work and adventures have taken them around the world where they discovered that hair is both a specifically personal and broadly unifying thing. Through their journeys, both personal and professional, they’ve heard some of the most fascinating stories from fellow hairstylists and clients how hair has transformed not just their look, their confidence and their spirits- but also their lives. Here are some of these stories.
The Strands That Bind Us – Today’s episode of The Strands That Bind Us we have one of the most innovative fashion/editorial hairstylists of our time.
Jawara and Matthew met 3 years ago in a tiny farmhouse hotel 3 hours outside of London, working on a new dyson hair tool launch, and instantly hit it off.
Jawara was just announced as the senior at large beauty editor for ID MAGAZINE and works with celebrities like Cardi B, FKA twigs, Beyoncé, solange and countless others.
He has had one of the most unique journeys through hair, from growing up in Kingston Jamaica immersed in a family filled with reggae royalty to gracing the pages of Vogue, Dazed, ID magazine, and working with brands like Hermes, Chanel, off white, and Gucci.
Today we will walk through his humble beginnings, how he learned community, and his determination that skyrocketed him to where he is now.
The Strands That Bind Us – In today's episode of The Strands That Bind Us, we sit down to chat with native New Yorker Yureesh, who experienced several life chapters worth of lessons, even before jumping into the hair community.
Yureesh and Drew were introduced several years ago being involved as educators with L'Oreal Professionnel, where they developed a friendship, exchanged countless ideas and concepts, and supported each other's growth.
Today Yureesh sits as the Global Director of Development for Pureology, director of education at Broome Street Society Salon in New York City, facilitator of Personal and Business development workshops for hairstylists and corporate teams within L'Oreal Professionnel Products Division, and is one hell of a motivating individual.
His unique path has led him to a blend of highs and lows filled with punk music, family support, substance abuse and silver linings as he has reinvented himself and allowed his successes to stack high.
The Strands That Bind Us – Today on The Strands That Bind Us, we have one of my Matthew’s closest friends and part of his COVID “pod” family, Ryan Hansen. Who may be one of the funniest humans he knows. Ryan grew up in San Diego working as a “hype man” at parties on saturdays, and spending sundays at mega churches with his family. He now lives in LA as a successful Hollywood actor. Matthew’s personal fave shows he worked on have been Veronica Mars , Ryan Hansen solves crimes, and just announced for a 3rd season for the funniest show He has watched this quarantine ... PARTY DOWN. But he may be most notable being 2011 buddytv’s 79th sexiest man on tv.... and we think the hair may have played a small role in this. But honestly, hair has been a huge factor in his rolls as an actor and he has been very well known for his luscious locks, and today you will hear why. We wanted to bring you a different perspective of hair, from an actors point of view.
On this episode of The Strands That Bind Us, we have the privilege to speak with one of my favorite and most influential people in my career to date, David Hoffman.
From his upbringing in St. Louis, we speak about his initial connection to hair and how he has been able to connect with clients throughout his career.
David’s ability to see beauty in others is a trait of his that I learned watching him from day 1 in his salon. His rule of 51 % business and 49% relationship speaks beautifully to his mindset towards each client.
Having a passion for fostering relationships with the clientele he sits with, David is well known for creating beautiful hair, and having such a remarkable and positive imprint on each person he touches.
He speaks to and from the heart, and is a huge part of my success in my own career.
Serving his clientele has kept him working long hours, but never working hard he states. His level of service and approach to his craft and customers is truly remarkable.

The Strands That Bind Us – Today on the strands that bind us, Drew and I speak to what we have learned through our own experiences and conversations with peers on the business side of our industry which is often an undereducated topic for many of us.
For many hairstylists, there is a desire we experience that transitions from working behind the chair at another individuals salon, as an employee of a company, or maybe assisting someone else, to branching out and starting something of our own. As understandable as it is to “spread our own wings,” it’s often a path traveled without much light shed on the road ahead with many obstacles and unknowns that can cause anxiety, stress, and issues both in personal and professional sides of our lives.
While we may not have experienced everything there is out there to be experts on this topic, we wanted to share more of our own process and struggles in hopes that it is able to help some of our peers and friends both in and out of the hair industry and in any element of business in general.
