In anticipation of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the British rowing team, who had not won gold since 1912, developed a useful strategy that changed everything for them. By asking themselves one simple question in advance of any decision, they went from being an average rowing team to winning Olympic Gold.  The question?  “Will this make the boat go faster?”

In psychology, this tactic is known as “implementation intentions,” and it is a tremendously powerful tool that can help you make the absolute most of yourself.  We talk about it today on the podcast.

This week we learned about freedom and sovereignty and the importance of being a free man in your own right.  Today, we discuss what Jocko Willink (and the Stoics) mean by “Discipline Equals Freedom” and how you can apply it to your daily life.

Remember: “Man conquers the world by conquering himself,” so it is important for us to first be self-disciplined if we wish to be free.

The greatest obstacles we face are often self-imposed. Self-discipline is the path to true freedom because it frees us from our own limitations that otherwise bar us from living the life we want.

27 Aug 2024Age Versus Experience00:15:17

“A man with white hair and wrinkles hasn’t lived long – he has just existed long” - Seneca

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

The Stoics believed that time is our most valuable resource, and it is the only thing that we can never get back.  Therefore, we must seek to constantly develop ourselves in the time that we have.

In Atomic Habits, James Clear tells the story of the British cycling team who took this theory to the extreme with impressive results when they hired Dave Brailsford as their performance director in 2003. At the time of Brailsford’s hiring, British cyclists had won just one gold medal at the Olympic Games since 1908, and no British cyclist had ever won the Tour de France.

On today’s podcast, we talk about how Brailsford created success in a fraction of the time by focusing on marginal gains!

E035: Seize What Flees

“Let us therefore set out whole-heartedly, leaving aside our many distractions and exert ourselves in this single purpose before we realize too late the swift and unstoppable flight of time and are left behind. 30 Aug 2024The World Does Not Care00:10:20

Things stand outside of us, themselves by themselves, neither knowing anything of themselves nor expressing any judgment.”  – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

The universe around us possesses no consciousness, nor does it pass judgments. It is fundamentally neutral and indifferent to our presence. It doesn't act with any particular intention or motive, whether to benefit or to harm us. Rather, it is our judgments and reactions to the world around us that assign value, meaning and emotional weight to events.

20 Aug 2024Master Yourself00:14:21

"No man is free who is not master of himself." – Epictetus

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Part of what makes Stoicism so fascinating is that its early adherents were representative of the extremes of both Greek and Roman society.  Some, like Cato, Zeno of Citium, Helvidius Priscus and Seneca were wealthy merchants, Senators, playwrights and civic leaders.  One, Marcus Aurelius, was the most powerful man on earth, rising to the position of Emperor of Rome.  But on the other hand, many came from more humble origins.  Cleanthes was a simple laborer, Chrysippus a runner, and Epictetus a slave. The varied lives of the progenitors of the philosophy show us that regardless of one’s station in life, some things are universally true.

When Epictetus said, "No man is free who is not master of himself," he conveyed a fundamental principle of Stoic philosophy that transcends class and caste, namely that inner freedom and self-mastery are the true source of liberty.

31 May 2024The Highest Good00:08:53

“Just that you do the right thing. The rest does not matter.” – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Cicero believed that the ultimate goal of human life was to achieve happiness, but he defined happiness not merely as pleasure or hedonistic pursuits but rather as a state of moral and intellectual excellence that came from achieving summum bonum - “the highest good.”

In this episode we discuss what it means to aspire to the highest good.

26 Jun 2024How You Bear It00:17:43

“It does not matter what you bear, but how you bear it.” – Seneca

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Will Jimeno was a 33 year old rookie cop for the Port Authority Police Department on the morning of September 11, 2001. Shortly after American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower, Jimeno and 19 of his colleagues boarded a commandeered bus and made their way towards the World Trade Center where they entered the mezzanine between the buildings. When the South Tower began to collapse minutes later, Jimeno, his colleague Dominick Pezzulo, and their sergeant, John McLoughlin were trapped in a freight elevator some 20 feet beneath the wreckage.

Jimeno and McLoughlin were two of only twenty survivors to emerge from the collapsed buildings.  Their amazing story reminds us that even in times of unimaginable despair, it is within our power to control our mind, and bear the burden with resilience and courage.  It reminds us that what defines our character is not the adversity we face, but, rather, the attitude with which we face it.

In September 2021, images and videos circulated showing Border Patrol Agents on horseback confronting illegal immigrants from Haiti on the banks of the Rio Grande River outside of Del Rio, Texas. As a rush of Haitians attempted to illegally enter the United States, the agents worked to manage the crowd and push them back, using their long leather reins to control their mounts.

Unfortunately, still photographs of the incident were characterized by media organizations and the White House as showing the agents “whipping” or “strapping” people. It didn’t matter that video proved that characterization was an outright lie, the narrative, once established, drowned out the truth. And when the investigation into the agents' conduct eventually cleared them of any wrongdoing, there were no apologies from the smear merchants who had long since moved on.

This incident is a good reminder that we work in a dynamic environment where deceptively edited images and videos can create an anti-police fervor in the blink of an eye.  And while we cannot control the actions of dishonest brokers who profit from spinning up societal outrage, we can take a lesson from how they operate: If they frame police conduct this way, what else are they manipulating?

25 Jun 2024Treat Yourself With Reason00:12:07

“In order to protect ourselves we must live like doctors and be continually treating ourselves with reason.”– Musonius Rufus

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

One thing we learned during the pandemic is the difference between proactive and reactive care.  We can take proactive steps to avoid infection or strengthen our immune system, but once infected, the treatment is reactive to the illness.

The Stoics viewed reason as proactive care for our mindset.  Like a vitamin regimen or a workout schedule, we can take proactive steps to strengthen ourselves against infection.

20 Jun 2024It's All Projection00:09:45

“Enter people’s minds, and you’ll find the judges you’re so afraid of — and how judiciously they judge themselves.” – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Imposter Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon characterized by persistent self-doubt and the fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of one's competence and accomplishments. Individuals experiencing this phenomenon often dismiss their achievements as luck, timing, or the result of deceiving others rather than acknowledging their own skills and qualifications.

At its core, Imposter Syndrome is a fear of being judged. But whose judgment, exactly, are we afraid of?

“The first thing a pretender to philosophy must do is get rid of their presuppositions; a person is not going to undertake to learn anything that they think they already know.” – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Presuppositions are the ideas, biases, and assumptions that we hold about the world based on our past experiences, beliefs, and cultural influences. They shape our perceptions of reality and influence how we interpret new information and experiences. However, clinging too tightly to these presuppositions can hinder our ability to truly learn and grow.

"The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are." – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

To keep an untroubled spirit is to cultivate emotional resilience and the ability to withstand life's trials without being overwhelmed by negative emotions like anger, fear, or despair.  But to succeed in this endeavor we must first be rational and reality-based in our thinking.

Facing reality directly makes us more effective problem-solvers. By understanding the true nature of a situation, we can devise thoughtful and pragmatic solutions and approach our challenges with serenity and insight.

There is a legal theory in federal money laundering cases called “willful blindness.”

Willful blindness is, in a word, lying to oneself. It is conscious avoidance.

Jordan Peterson calls willful blindness “the most common form of deception” and argues that it was responsible for the rise of fascism and communism and all of their attendant atrocities.

But, on a more personal level, he argues that willful blindness is responsible for the crimes we commit against ourselves.

Ignorance is not bliss. It’s deadly serious.

In this conversation, Kris and Jeff discuss the current situation at the US-Mexico border and the challenges it presents. They provide insights based on their extensive experience in law enforcement and border-related crimes. The conversation covers topics such as the record numbers of illegal crossings, the impact on communities and resources, the intentional policies of the Biden administration, and the role of the media in shaping perceptions. They also highlight the strain on law enforcement resources and the need for effective enforcement and vetting processes.

The conversation delves into various aspects of border enforcement, the consequences of shutting down the border, the conditions at border detention facilities, the language used in immigration discourse, the credibility of asylum claims, the apprehension of individuals on the terror watch list, the humanitarian crisis at the border, the political motivations behind immigration policies, the dangers faced by those crossing the border, the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, and the anticipated increase in border crossings as we approach the November election.

  • The influx of people is overwhelming law enforcement resources and impacting communities along the border.

  • The credibility of asylum claims should be carefully evaluated to ensure the integrity of the system.

17 Jul 2024OUT OF ROLE: Breaking Down the Trump Assassination Attempt, Security Failures, the USSS Response and Investigative Aftermath with Former Special Agent Jeff Fields01:26:18

Given my background as a Special Agent I have been getting a lot of questions about the Trump shooting on Saturday and my opinion on security failures, the Secret Service response, staffing issues and what comes next. I brought my friend and classmate Jeff Fields on to discuss this incident and provide some insight from two former Special Agents who have worked with (and investigated) Secret Service.

The conversation discusses the Trump assassination attempt and the role of the Secret Service in protecting the President and other high-profile individuals. We dive into the different divisions within the Secret Service and their responsibilities. We analyze the incident and the potential lapses in security that allowed the gunman to get within 400 feet of the President. We highlight the coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies and emphasize the extensive training and vetting process that Secret Service agents undergo. We also discuss the criticism and misconceptions surrounding the female agents involved in the incident and address the training and skills of female agents, the challenges of using certain holsters, and the importance of communication and coordination during high-stress situations. The conversation also explores the allocation of resources and the limitations faced by the Secret Service in terms of hiring and budget and highlights the complexity of presidential protection and the need for a comprehensive understanding of the operational challenges.

The conversation explores the issues and challenges within the Secret Service including recruitment and retention problems, resource allocation, communication failures, and the need for accountability. while highlighting the sacrifices and challenges faced by Secret Service agents, such as constant travel and missed family events.

Finally, we dig into the potential separation of criminal investigative responsibilities from the Secret Service and the impact of being absorbed into the Department of Homeland Security while laying out what we hope to see for changes and accountability going forward.

Show Notes:

There is a Hindu proverb about success. In essence, it reminds us that there are many paths we can climb to reach the top of a mountain, and all of the paths lead in the same direction.

The important thing isn’t the path you choose, but that you’re climbing.

And the only people wasting time are the ones running around and around the base of the mountain, telling everyone else that they’re on the wrong path.

The lesson is endlessly applicable.

In all aspects of your life there will be people who tell you that you’re going to fail. There will be naysayers who criticize and cast doubt as you climb.

If you listen and respond to those who tell you you’re on the wrong path, you’ll never make it to the summit.

Here’s a tip: if someone is closer to the summit than you, pay attention. If someone is closer to the base, tune them out.

You don’t get rich by taking advice from broke people.

You don’t get fit by listening to your buddy with the dad bod.

You don’t cross finish lines by looking behind you.

Hanlon’s razor is the adage that you should “never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”. Applied broadly, this principle suggests that when assessing people’s actions, you should not assume that they acted out of a desire to cause harm, as long as there is a reasonable alternative explanation.

On today’s show we talk about how you can use an awareness of Hanlon’s Razor and fundamental attribution error to reduce friction, stress and emotional reactions in your life.

The last four months have been a laboratory for me to test and practice the Stoic principle of the “Dichotomy of Control.”  By controlling that which I could, and finding anchor points to set my life around during a period of chaos, I was able to regain control more quickly and hit the ground running to start a new week and month.

What are the anchor points in your life that you can lean into to help maintain control in times of chaos?

Remember:

“Some things are within our power, while others are not. Within our power are opinion, motivation, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever is of our own doing; not within our power are our body, our property, reputation, office, and, in a word, whatever is not of our own doing” - Epictetus

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats." - H.L. Mencken

One of my favorite books is Colin Woodard’s The Republic of Pirates that tells the tale of the Golden Age of Piracy and how the infamous Flying Gang revolted against the conditions they faced on the sea and on plantations and joined forces to form the western hemisphere’s first democratic republic.

The pirates weren’t what Hollywood wants you to see them as. They weren’t all bloodthirsty reprobates. They were rebels - free men - who said “enough,” and cast off their yokes to breathe free air. Their rebellion shook the foundations of the British and Spanish Empires and fanned the democratic sentiments that would drive the American revolution 50 years later.

The story always reminds me that men, at our core, across the generations, have always had the same yearning to throw off the shackles and forge our own path - free, independent and sovereign - not living by another’s leave.

We’re not that different in the 21st Century than those 17th Century rebels.  We all yearn to live life on our terms.  So…When do you say enough is enough and hoist your own black flag?

Gentlemen, you get one life. One shot to truly live free, to truly chase what’s yours and create a legacy. When will it be time for you to throw up your own black flag and choose to live life on your terms?

When faced with prejudice against our profession it can be easy to get defensive. After all, you didn’t do anything deserving of the enmity. But does that defensiveness win any hearts and minds? Your badge? A piece of stamped metal.

Your authority? Words on a piece of paper.

For our Monday Mindset this week we discuss the importance of strength training.

Two things have stayed with me since my first law enforcement academy.

The first was a U.S. Marshals poster on the wall of the gym that featured a prisoner doing lat pull downs. It read: “Every day you don’t work out someone else does! Stay fit!”

The second was a banner on the wall in the weight room with a Mark Rippetoe quote across it that read: “Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general.”

I can’t begin to tell you how much external motivation I’ve drawn from those two posters over the years, especially the second.

I want to win the fight.

I want to go home to my family.

I need to be harder to kill.

I want to be more useful.

I should probably work out.

Man, according to Viktor Frankl, is pushed by drivers and pulled by values. Values are your principles and beliefs, your code. Drivers are what intrinsically motivate you.

We all have values and drivers in our lives. The things that set our guardrails and the things make us take that first step and keep us going.  The values that pull me? Integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, courage, self-reliance, service and toughness. The drivers that push me? Commitment, self-development, success, status, challenge and family.

Take a moment to consider your drivers and your values.  Write them down, keep them close and consider them in the things you choose to pursue.  If it doesn’t fit your drivers and values, perhaps you’re on the wrong path and it’s time to adjust.

So much of our success in life begins with holding fast to that which gives us purpose.  When you find alignment with your purpose, consistent action becomes much easier.

Today is a good day to remember that our own welfare cannot be disconnected from service to others, and that seeking our best self means actively caring for the welfare of others.

Never forget the example of men and women like Orio Palmer, Moira Smith, Welles Crowther, Frank de Martini, Pablo Ortiz and Rick Rescorla. Men and women who, in the hardest moment of their lives, chose to give their last full measure in service to others.

That is selfless. That is duty. That is living for higher purpose. And that is what we should all strive for.

On a day when we rightly remember and mourn for those lost, and grieve with those left behind, let us also celebrate the actions of those who rose to their highest self, expressing love and service in their last moments. And let us strive to live our lives by their example.

10 Jul 2024Live For Your Neighbor00:11:46

“There is no such thing as good or bad fortune for the individual; we live in common. And no one can live happily who has regard to himself alone and transforms everything into a question of his own utility; you must live for your neighbor, if you would live for yourself. ” — Seneca

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

In 1955, the Los Angeles Police Department held a contest to identify a motto that would express the ideals that the LAPD was dedicated to.  The winning entry was the motto, “To Protect and to Serve” submitted by Officer Joseph S. Dorobek. Many departments have since adopted the slogan for themselves because of how succinctly it describes the relationship between police and the societies that they watch over. So what do the Stoics have to say about how we should protect and serve?

Show Notes:

Rick Rescorla was a remarkable figure known for his heroism and dedication, particularly during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Rescorla's early life saw him join the British Army's Parachute Regiment and serve in Cyprus and Rhodesia. He then moved to the United States, where he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 7th Cavalry during the Vietnam War. Rescorla's service in Vietnam at the Battle of Ia Drang earned him several accolades for bravery and leadership, including the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.

After his military career, Rescorla pursued a career in security and became the head of security for Morgan Stanley at the company's offices in the World Trade Center's South Tower. His commitment to safety and security was unparalleled, and he conducted regular evacuation drills, which some employees initially found excessive.

However, Rescorla's foresight and dedication to preparedness proved invaluable on the morning of September 11, 2001. When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, Rescorla immediately took charge of the evacuation process in the South Tower. He directed Morgan Stanley employees and other occupants to evacuate, even though the Port Authority initially advised them to stay put.

Rescorla's leadership and cool-headedness saved the lives of more than 2,600 people that morning. Tragically, after helping to evacuate most of the building's occupants, he re-entered the South Tower to search for stragglers and was last seen on the 10th floor. The tower collapsed shortly thereafter.

Rick Rescorla's selfless actions and unwavering commitment to the safety of others made him a hero during the 9/11 attacks. His story exemplifies courage, leadership, and the willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to save lives.  We talk about it today!

27 Jun 2024Bread and Circuses00:12:24

“A weak mind must be constantly entertained and stimulated. A strong mind can occupy itself and, more important, be still and vigilant in moments that demand it.” – Ryan Holiday

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Panem et circenses is a Latin phrase that translates to "bread and circuses" in English.  In ancient Rome, panem et circenses represented the political strategy employed by emperors and politicians to keep the population compliant. The government distributed free bread (panem) to citizens and organized lavish spectacles and entertainment (circenses), such as chariot races, gladiator fights, and theatrical performances, in grand arenas like the Colosseum. By providing basic necessities and diverting attention with extravagant shows, rulers aimed to prevent social unrest and maintain their power.  Sound familiar?

Show Notes:

Colonel John Boyd may be most famous for his skill as a fighter pilot and his creation of the OODA Loop, but his best advice has nothing to do with either. It had to do with character.

In the middle of a career that spanned three wars, Boyd was assigned to a post in the Pentagon.  Surrounded by Generals and political climbers who had made their careers backstabbing and butt kissing, Boyd set about making his department more efficient and budget conscious - an outlier amidst all of the tax-payer funded largesse.  But Boyd’s steadfast adherence to fighting fraud, waste and abuse weren’t without cost, as he regularly found himself in dust-ups with his chain of command, causing his name to be added to the top line of many General’s enemies lists.

While Boyd was disappointed that his rigid adherence to his conscience likely cost him the opportunity to rise above the rank of Colonel, he didn’t regret it, and made sure to tell young officers that they too would face a time for choosing sides.

In life there would be a roll call, Boyd would say. And at that roll call every one of us will have to make a decision to do something or to be someone. To do something, you might have to make a few enemies.  To be someone, you might have to compromise your character.

When it comes to the pursuit of virtue, we must prioritize action. It encourages us to focus on becoming good individuals by embodying virtuous qualities and practicing moral principles rather than getting entangled in chasing the acclaim of others.

We talk about it on the podcast today!

30 Jul 2024A Slave to Impulse00:14:00

“Stop allowing your mind to be a slave, to be jerked about by selfish impulses, to kick against fate and the present, and to mistrust the future." – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Over time, stressors and the lack of relief can increase the chances of police engaging in unhealthy behaviors, such as overuse of alcohol.  This overuse can lead to dependency or full blown substance abuse disorders and the associated behavioral, financial and legal issues that often come with them. Some studies suggest that as many as 30 percent of law enforcement officers have a substance abuse disorder.

But we don’t have to be slaves to the stressors we experience. We discuss stoic tips to stop bad behaviors before they start on the podcast today.

E033: Get Off The Treadmill

"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body." – Seneca

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

There is a psychological theory called the hedonic treadmill that describes the tendency of humans to return to a relatively stable level of happiness or satisfaction following temporary changes in life circumstances. In other words, we can turn the speed of our happiness up or down with our pursuits of pleasure, but in the end, we just keep running in place.

So, how do we do get off of this treadmill? By focusing on eudaimonic pursuits over hedonic ones.

  • Eudaimonic happiness, which focuses on living a life of virtue and meaning, can provide a deeper and more enduring sense of fulfillment than hedonic happiness.
  • Persisting through difficulty and resisting the allure of short-term gratification can lead to personal growth and a greater level of happiness.
  • Expanding one's comfort zone by embracing challenges and hardships can catalyze a deeper level of happiness and satisfaction in life.

Alan Watts' quote, "Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone," invites us to embrace the art of non-interference and surrender. It encourages us to recognize the futility of overthinking and over-controlling, and to find clarity through patience and allowing things to settle on their own.

In a world marked by incessant activity and the pursuit of clarity through external means, Watts' wisdom offers a profound reminder of the power of stillness and the simplicity of non-interference in attaining the peace and clarity we seek.

On the podcast today we discuss the profound impact of surrendering to stillness.

15 Aug 2024The Best Answer to Anger00:09:13

“The best answer to anger is silence.” – Marcus Aurelius

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

The term HALT in Alcoholics Anonymous is a reference to the most common triggers for relapse - hunger, anger, loneliness and tiredness. The mnemonic device helps remind individuals in recovery to manage their emotional and physical states, as these can influence their vulnerability to relapse.

Anger can be the hardest of these triggers to overcome, and while there are times when anger is an absolutely appropriate response to a provocation, it can also lead to impulsive and destructive behavior that causes harm to our reputations and relationships. Silence, on the other hand, can have the opposite effect.

We talk about the antidote to anger on today’s podcast!

Takeaways:

  • Silence can be a powerful tool in managing anger and diffusing conflicts.
  • Being aware of triggers for anger, such as hunger, anger, loneliness, and tiredness, can help in managing emotional and physical states.
  • Choosing silence in moments of anger allows for calmness and clarity to emerge, enabling a wise and measured response.
  • Practicing stoicism does not mean suppressing emotions, but rather harnessing them and choosing how to respond.
  • Writing down triggers for anger can increase awareness and help in gaining control in the moment between trigger and reaction.

Show Notes:

On our Friday Debrief we recap the week, talk about the lessons learned and head into the weekend with a tactical advantage.

In Meditations 9.5 Marcus Aurelius reminds us that “Injustice lies in what you aren’t doing, not only in what you are doing.”

What does this mean?

Said another way, you can commit injustice by doing nothing.

Virtue signaling is incredibly popular in our internet focussed society.  You must emote on every current thing.  You must be down for the struggle…nominally.  As long as you don’t have to, you know, actually struggle.

Virtue signaling is a violation of the core Stoic practice of showing rather than telling. Virtue signaling is not virtue.  Emoting does not make for a  virtuous life. It is the same as doing nothing.

If we begin with a commitment to virtue, an earnest commitment to doing the right thing, to serving the common good, to philosophical ideals, it requires us to act when we see injustice, not to talk about it. Virtue signaling is easy.  Virtue is hard!

19 Jun 2024A Threshold Check00:11:41

“One person likes tending to his farm, another to his horse; I like to daily monitor my self-improvement.” — Epictetus

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

There are plenty of schools of thought on room clearing, but one universal truth is that thresholds are dangerous places, and how we approach them and negotiate them requires coordination and communication. That is why instructors encourage us to pause before crossing or entering a threshold. A quick pause, or ‘threshold check,’ allows us an opportunity to assess the situation before moving. It is, above all, an exercise in self-awareness. How can we apply this tactical concept to our personal lives? We discuss it on the podcast today.

Takeaways

  •
  • Threshold checks are essential in both tactical situations and personal life to assess the situation and practice self-awareness.
  • Pausing before crossing a threshold allows for better decision-making and reduces the risk of unnecessary conflict.
  • Self-improvement requires self-assessment and identifying areas for growth.
  • Practicing daily threshold checks can lead to personal growth and improvement.

Show Notes:

On our Monday Muster we set intentions for the week and identify a concept that will help you live your life with valor.

In Meditations 8.33 Marcus Aurelias reminds us to NOT take the slights of the day personally. He reminds us to accept humbly and let go easily, to accept without arrogance and let go with indifference.

This lesson is pretty straightforward, but profound. When something comes your way—be it status, praise, or material things—accept it with humility, and be mindful that just because you’ve received that thing it doesn’t mean you are more important than anyone else. Do not attach yourself to what you’ve gained. That way, when you inevitably lose it, you are able to carry on unfazed.

To the Stoics, you could only control your mind and your soul. Therefore, spending your life in pursuit of worldly things, like material goods, wealth, social status, meaningless titles, and praise from others, was a road to misery and disappointment. After all, the more you want, the poorer you’ll feel.

11 Jul 2024Learn As You Teach00:08:44

“Withdraw into yourself, as far as you can. Associate with those who will make a better man of you. Welcome those whom you yourself can improve. The process is mutual; for men learn while they teach.” – Seneca

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

The role of a Field Training Officer is crucial in helping new officers transition from the academic and theoretical aspects of police training to the practical and real-world scenarios they will encounter on the job. Unfortunately, for many rookies the only real world scenarios they encountered with an FTO was where to get a uniform discount at lunch time and the best place to catch a cat nap on duty. Let’s talk about how we be better teachers while also learning.

In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:

Every celebrity guru will sell you some version of the same mantra: “With my patented, proprietary method, you can change your thoughts and, thereby, change your life!” But long before Ted Talks were en vogue the Stoics had developed their own concept for changing their thoughts and improving their lives.  They called it the inner citadel.

Show Notes:

On our Friday Debrief we recap the week, talk about the lessons learned and head into the weekend with a tactical advantage.

This week we discussed the importance of living optimally and knowing when it is time to look in the mirror, say enough is enough, and put your life back on the path that you can walk down with purpose.  Obstacles are opportunities, but too many of us let the obstacles send us on a long journey away from our destination. Are you in alignment with your purpose? If so, the path becomes much clearer and easier to traverse, despite the obstacles.

Today, we’re focussing on identifying your purpose and reminding yourself of the man you wanted to become.

Remember: “If you don’t know to which port you sail, no wind is favorable.” - Seneca
