25 Jun 2019Interview With Paul Nicholson, CEO of the Nicholson Group00:54:50

If you’re looking for a significant hotspot where you will start building your property portfolio, then this episode of The Steven Sully Podcast is for you. Today, Steven Sully talks to Paul Nicholson from the Nicholson Group to talk about his property journey. From scratch, Paul was able to grow and build his property portfolio and then build his own company. Discover why he ought to stay away from the prime cities and focus his attention on the undiscovered areas. He saw the possibility, learned how he could improve the area, and achieved success.

Paul also shares that it’s important to know your WHY, to always learn, to have a mentor, to have a healthy daily routine, and many more. Discover how these have helped him to be a better person. Tune in to know more about Paul’s journey and start learning about investment strategies.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Paul has always had big dreams and always wanted nice things in life. He chose to put a halt in pursuing his law career and started diving in property investing when he saw the possibilities of growth and wealth in it. In just 10 years, he was able to grow his portfolio to as much as 200 properties including flats, commercial units, terrace houses, etc.
  • When looking for financing for investment properties, make sure that your dreams, ambitions, and plans are reflected from your portfolio, so they can know what are they getting into.
  • People wouldn’t dare explore areas like Kensington because it’s a bad place to invest in properties, but Paul did and was able to grow his portfolio there. He did the thorough research, so he knew what he can develop and turn the poor conditions around.
    • Paul chose to stay away from places that are already saturated because of the heavy competition and high inflation rates.
  • It’s important to have a vision and a WHY. It makes a huge difference if we don’t chase for money and instead have a more fulfilling purpose.
  • Networking can help you stand out in the market, learn new stuff, and start new partnerships. Attend property events, and also start joining online property discussion groups.
  • The near-future of the property market shouldn’t be your basis when you should start your property journey. As long as there is determination, optimism, and adaptability, you’ll be able to succeed where the market is down.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I have a golden rule all the time where I take what the end value would be.”
  • “Make sure you do your research and don’t just flood in the areas where others are.”
  • “We aren’t in the greatest location. It’s not a prime city, but the savings in terms of the clients makes it an option.”
  • “When you don’t tell people what you’re good at and what you’re doing, how would they even know? You got to say your message out loud.”
  • “I learned as I go, which is probably the worst thing that I have done. The sleepless nights, the stress and the stress… If I had a mentor, if I listened to podcasts, I wouldn’t do those mistakes.”

23 Oct 2018How to use the C.R.E.S.T formula when pitching00:19:38

Today, Steven discusses how to use The C.R.E.S.T model when pitching over the phone, face-to-face or any sales environment. This model is fantastic when dealing with ‘inbound’ leads and will help you to help you to secure commitment from your customers and close the sale.

Learn how to get inspiration, motivation and education from this simple but effective model to success. If you follow this simple process you will provide great value, overcome objections and give a fantastic service to your customers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Always internally quality your lead by reading back to them the lead source in which they came from. Add credibility and take control by asking them to grab a pen and paper so that you can explain to them more about the product or service they’re interested in. This also helps to see if:

  • They are the decision maker?
  • If they have the funds to purchase?
  • If they were really interested in the first place?
  • If you’re able to take control of the sale or scenario?

C.redibilty - Talk about yourself and be honest about it to build a rapport and come across as credible. Use factual information and use it to your advantage to best serve the customer.

R.eturns - Explain clearly and effectively the return on investment for your customers.

E.xit - Offer the reassurance of a exit strategy and help the customer realise how and when they can take their money out if they needed to or the product or service wasn’t right.

S.afe - Describe what security measures are in place to give the customer a sense of security in the product or service that you’re pitching. This could be insurances or guarantees to ensure a sellout clause. You can also mention the track record of the product or service to put your customer's mind at ease.

T.ime - Explain when your customer will begin to see a return on their investment or when the product or service will mature.

BEST MOMENTS

“Always test your leads by seeing if you could go higher with their purchase/investment”

“Allow the pen to be your friend”

“People will invest in YOU if you demonstrate to them your credibility”

“The subconscious mind can hear the negatives”

“Be transparent and clear so that people will buy into you, your service and your product”

“Most people lose good size sales because they never talk about the big numbers”

30 Jun 2020You Don't Need To Reinvent The Wheel To Become A Success00:09:49

  • Making money through property, by taking something that already exists and improving upon it to achieve a profit, is the most proven methodology. There’s a reason why so many in business are invested in property.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I always try to find lessons in anything I’m exposed to’

‘You can take something already existing, have a different take on it, and you can change the value of it quite dramatically’

29 Jun 2021The Journey Towards Becoming A Pro - with Dan Morley01:17:10

This week, Steven talks to professional boxer and personal trainer, Dan Morley, about life inside and outside the boxing ring, the places he looks for inspiration and motivation, the lessons transferrable between the world of sport and business, and what the boxer's journey between amateur and pro is really like.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • No professional ever starts in the lap of luxury. They al begin at the bottom and must, literally, fight their way to success.
  • The wins along the way to the top always feel sweeter and more earned if we've worked for them. Dedication reaps satisfaction.

30 Mar 2021Life In Abstract - with Remi Rough01:00:02

In this week's show, Steven talks to Remi Rough, a street and gallery artist from South London who began in the 1980s, before making the move to gallery art. Remi's most famous works are his abstracts which have been exhibited in Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Perth, and Tokyo.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Graffiti art was the first form of social media. It allowed messages and ideas to be exchanged in a public forum, and still does.
  • Graffiti art and street art are often held up as the same thing, but the fundamental difference is that they both speak very different languages.
  • Street art is for everyone. Graffiti is coded for other artists. Street art is art with inbuilt codes, and meant to be appreciated by anyone with a taste for the visual.
  • The real rewards in art come from people appreciating what you do. Art can be collaborative, but it is generally a lonely form of expression. Putting out into the world provides validation.

BEST MOMENTS

'Graffiti art was the first social media'

'Street art is a visual language but it's not coded'

'I'm in the business of art'

'When someone appreciates something, it gives you an incentive to continue'

09 Sep 2018Routine of a Champion00:21:59

Welcome to The Steven Sulley Study, a podcast following the career, successes, setbacks and challenges of accomplished businessman and boxer Steven Sulley. In today’s episode, Steven shares with you the ‘Routine of a champion’ his daily routine that leverages time, keeps you healthy and is sure to improve your success.

Tune in to hear Steven’s take on being a success and how it’s in everyone's best interest to have a positive and optimistic mindset because it all comes down to how you treat your 24 hours.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

A routine of a champion :

"My day to day routine and how I achieve mini successes throughout it. These boost you and help you to achieve the larger goals. Routine is key in anything we do”

  1. Wake up early - Most successful entrepreneurs and those that are self-driven use their 24 hours each day to the fullest.
  2. Training - Ensure you are training five days per week in order to stay fit and healthy, it will help to keep your mind positive and optimistic. If you can invest in a personal trainer to keep you accountable.
  3. Podcasts - When driving back from the gym or going for a run try to leverage your time and improve your personal development.
  4. Superfood Nutrition - Eat clean and focus on plant-based food/protein. Look after your body and fuel it in order to be a success and serve your clients.
  5. Listen to the news - It’s so important if you’re getting into business you must be aware of current affairs. Be aware and keep the news on in the background to become more well-rounded.
  6. Reading - When travelling try to read and educate yourself by highlighting the key points, by doing this you are participating and taking in the information.
  7. Affirmation - Personal, positive and present. When you have setbacks, remember your affirmations.
  8. Incantation - Similar to an affirmation but stand up and talk to yourself in the mirror. When you embody what you say and what you’re trying to achieve you’re much more likely to achieve the law of attraction.
  9. Highlight what’s going on in current affairs - Seek out the news that’s relevant to you. Cite the newspaper and use it in your sales, demonstrate you have a wealth of information and how you can help them. Attempt to write down 1-3 news headlines per day.
  10. Sales - At the core of every business is sales so you need to make sure you are prepared. Warm up your voice and treat yourself as a ‘sales athlete’ every day that you go to work. This will help you sound empowered, passionate and enthusiastic.

BEST MOMENTS

“At the core of every business is a strong sales team, at the core of salespeople individually are people looking to achieve their goals and at the core of that is a routine.”

“The best investment is an investment in yourself”

“When you haven’t eaten and you feel hungry you give off the same feelings as being unsure, in sales you must be focused and prepared in order to serve your customers right”

“Leaders are readers and big earners are always learners”

“As your self-worth improves your net-worth will increase”

“Honestly is the best policy”

30 Jan 2019Invest in Yourself; An Interview With Ruben Tabares.00:49:27

Following a sparring session, Steven Sulley interviews Ruben Tabares, strength and conditioning coach, nutritionist and sports therapist. Currently one of the world’s most in-demand trainers, Ruben shares fascinating insights into the journey he takes with the individuals he works with. This podcast was created at the David Haye Gym and the very special atmosphere is captured as part of this engaging podcast.

KEY TAKEAWAYS • The jumping and plyometric work involved in ballet was a positive basis for my success in sports. An extended and unexpected illness that manifested itself as flu-like symptoms due to viruses attacking and destroying my immune system propelled me onto a path that led to me becoming a nutritionist, a sports therapist and a strengthening and conditioning coach studying biomechanics. I am always interested in anything that is alternative and will extend my knowledge base.

• I’ve taken different bits of information from lots of different sources and I piece it together, try it on myself and if it works I’ll then try it with my clients.

• I seek to give my clients a platform of complete health so that they are to springboard to do whatever they want.

• Water If you want to have more energy - drink more water. When you're born you are 90% water by the time you are an adult it is 70% and when you die you are made up of 50% water. You are fighting dehydration from the minute you are born. So, it makes sense to think about what you drink because it’s what makes up the most of you.

• Nutrition Nutrition is highly important, and every food has a certain energy We each have a different frequency and wavelength, when we are healthy it’s like a fingerprint. Everyone and everything has a wavelength and frequency.

When you measure the frequency of food wavelengths the higher the nutrient value or the density of the food the more the frequency will nourish you. A virus coming in will distort your wavelength frequency.

If you are in love, your wavelength frequency is small but if you are depressed or unhappy the wavelength frequency you give off is larger, fast foods also have the same large frequency. Like attracts like which is why when you feel unhappy you are attracted to junk foods.

• Taking Things Out The more toxins you can cut out from your system the better. When you’re talking about high levels of performance it’s the little things you’re taking out of the equation and what you are bringing in that create a breeding ground for amazing athletic performance whether you are an athlete, a business person or mum. You will find amazing levels of energy you didn’t think possible because you’re not bringing in toxins and have taken things that cause inflammation in the body such as wheat and dairy away.

• Training Strength training is good for athletes across all areas and it is particularly important for longevity. When training it’s important to do something that takes you out of your usual routine if you are exercising and not thinking about your work you are getting respite from it.

BEST MOMENTS ‘When I learnt about nutrition I had more questions than answers’ ‘David Haye is probably my most famous client and I’ve worked with him for 10 years’ ‘I am able to do what I do because of what happened to me, wouldn’t change it as it’s given me a foundation of knowledge’ ‘Nothing is a substitute for food, superfoods are a nutritional tool’ ‘I can give them 20 years of knowledge and experience that they can benefit from’ ‘The best investment you can make is in yourself’ ‘The more toxins you can cut out from your system the better’ ‘People should look into strength and conditioning coaches to look after them’ ‘I like solving problems’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study Podcast ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. 27 Nov 2019Cultivate Relationships00:12:39

You can’t easily dismiss a certain person in your life just because you don’t see ‘benefits’ directly. Some people we keep by our side are there to keep us grounded, to make us go beyond our doubts and fears, to give the needed criticisms and so on. Quit cutting off ties for selfish reasons. Instead, why don’t you do the steps to make your relationships grow? Offer some help, be more supportive, and then see how things will go.

Discover more on how you can build, grow, and cultivate meaningful relationships when you tune in this episode of The Steven Sully Study Podcast.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are more reasons cultivate relationships (and think twice before cutting anyone out of your life):

  • Anyone can be a client of yours. But they won’t even consider you as their service provider if you don’t radiate that positive and trustful energy. Every interaction is an opportunity, so always give it your best.
  • They might recommend you to other people (who also might be potential clients).
  • They might be of help for you in the future, if not now.
  • That person can be your business partner or investment partner. If you haven’t heard, successful entrepreneurs Rob Moore and Mark Homer initially met a bar, and before you know it, they now own their own property company, Progressive Property.
  • They can be a very good friend.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “What you put out in the universe, you’re gonna get eventually.”
  • “You can never underestimate what an individual can do for you.”

  • The youth club helps to stop kids being on the streets, committing crimes and getting into trouble. It also gives them something to do rather than hanging around.
  • Drugs, gangs and violence is on the raise especially in London so Steve’s club not only teaches them how to box but also teaches them life skills such as how to present themselves properly.
  • When Steven’s dad was in school kids used to settle their differences via boxing then have the issue solved. There was less stabbings.
  • There’s now more females getting into boxing than when Steve and Steven were teenagers. It just shows that it also helps to give more females confidence.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Different clubs aren’t getting the funding.’

‘These days’ kids don’t know how to talk face to face because of mobile devices’.

26 Feb 2020Mastering The Art of Sales00:20:10

Responding to feedback is the lifeblood of the Steven Sulley Study, and that’s exactly what’s happening today. You’ve been reaching out Steven to ask him to talk about what he knows best: sales.

Steven talks about the art of communication, closing, marketing and strategy. There are several key factors in being the best, and the main one is an effective sales and marketing team. But how do you get the best out of them?

With Steven’s help, you can kickstart your sales strategy today.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A marketing and sales team is the lifeblood of any business. But you also need a strategy and a system to achieve the full potential.

  • Sales requires a special mind-set. Not everyone has it, but it can be taught. Those who achieve it usually go on to staggering success. Steven himself has seen several become self-made millionaires.

  • There are three general rules for determining if a prospect should become your client:
    • Are they interested? Do they want a part of you and what you’re selling?
    • Do they have the autonomy to be making decisions.
    • Do they have the finances in place, in order to buy what you’re selling.

  • Another rule that Steven has developed on his own is can you establish control of the sales call? You need to make sure that you can retain some sense of power.

  • The transfer of enthusiasm is definitely the definition of a sale. Sell on the excitement. What keeps them in the sale is the logic and the emotion they’re buying into.

BEST MOMENTS

’Nothing happens unless you have a good marketing and sales team’

‘I’ll be doing my best to get my son to take up two things in life: boxing and sales’

‘Interest stems from being taught something’

‘Allow the pen to be your friend’

22 Dec 2022Boxer and Entrepreneur Alfie Best Jr On Why Drive Can Create World-Beating Wealth01:16:07

This week, Steven talks once again to entrepreneur, boxer, and star of Absolutely Ascot, Alfie Best Jr, this time to talk about next chapters and how success compounds, what drives him in life and how motivation and drive are more important than qualifications, and how the power of words can be used to build or topple empires.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • For some people, qualifications are very important. But in most cases, simply having the drive to do something is enough to get you there.
  • Having goals can keep the fires burning inside of you, even during the tough times. Having something to aim at is the fuel behind true drive.
  • Calculated risks are crucial if you want to break through barriers and take success to the next level. There's only so far you can go if you play it safe.
  • Social media has a sinister way of taking something that someone has said and re-contextualising a statement in order to provide shock value. We need to hear everything and then judge for ourselves.

BEST MOMENTS

'To work for yourself, you don't need qualifications. You just need to want to do it'

'You've always got to look at what's next'

'I'm young, and I'm willing to take more risks'

'I haven't got big boots to fill, because I'm not trying to fill them. I'm going to walk right past them'

02 Nov 2022Taking Your Place In History - with Hannah Rankin01:12:41

Hannah Rankin is a Scottish professional boxer who has held the WBA female super-welterweight title since November 2021. She has also held the IBO title in 2019 and challenged for the WBA female super-middleweight title in 2018; the unified WBA, WBC, and IBF female middleweight titles in 2018; and the WBO female middleweight title in 2020.

As the first female Scottish World Champion, Hannah holds a prestigious place in the history books. Hannah joins Steven today to discuss her ethic, her legacy, and what lies ahead in the future.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • No one ever reached the heights of greatness by doing things in a half-hearted way. The key to success is to find the thing you love and work as hard as you can.
  • There are far more corollaries between the world of music and sport than we may realise. Rhythm and timing play a essential part on the success of either.
  • Sport and discipline can often provide a family when we need one. It is the one place in the world that can provide distraction enough to take our minds off the darkest of life's challenges.
  • You have to stay authentic. Pretending to be someone else cannot be sustained forever. You need to design your personal brand in a way that appeals and be true to yourself.

BEST MOMENT

'If I have a passion for it, then I'll give it a million percent'

'I want to be the best'

'Boxing became a safe haven for me'

'Fundamentally, you have to be yourself'

26 Dec 2018Motivated by a Lack of Time00:10:40

Steven Sulley passionately talks about time in relation to motivation towards your goals.

He explains how a lack of time should push us all to act now.

“Father time doesn’t wait you’ve only got one chance at it, you’ve got to utilise it to get the most out of it, so you get a yield and all the profits later on.”

KEY TAKE AWAYS

  • The biggest Motivation to Get up and Get on with it, is Time

Believe in setting goals and think carefully about timing.

If you’re thinking about a New year’s resolution start it today that’s what winners do

  • A lot of successful self-made people have an attitude of ‘I will do whatever it takes to reach my goals’, that doesn’t mean they put it off to the new year, they act now.

  • Don’t get stuck on the Some Day Isle

Lot s of people are on ‘someday isle’   a place referred to by Brian Tracy in his book Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires.  On this isle, the people will some day start a business, some day start making money. The clear message is don’t wait start now.

  • Living For 100 Years

If you set yourself a goal of living to 100 years old, and calculate the 30 years you’ll be sleeping, the first 10 years you will spend developing, along with other things you are only left with an average of 50 years. That’s only 50 years to be productive and do something That something could be starting a business or getting on that journey to reach your goals.

  • Utilise Your time in the most effective Way

If you look at any successful people, they utilise their time in the most effective ways. You can learn to combine elements to get more from your time. An effective person has compounded their efforts and utilised their time effectively.

.

BEST MOMENTS

“Usually there are opportunities if you have enough money, there is a way of purchasing something back, but not time once it wasted its gone”

“Time is not going to wait for you.”

“When I’m lacking motivation, I just start thinking about time there’s all that time you can’t get back.”

“Nobody can tell you that you can’t achieve something”

18 Nov 2020Giving Our Children The Best Chance Possible Through The Art Of Enrichment- with Laceinne01:05:39

Steven talks to The Pink Coconut's Laceinne, a natural birth and parenting advocate, and proponent of encouraging us all to live more boldly, more compassionately, more truthfully, and in a far more healthy way.

Laceinne discusses the importance of starting our children on journeys of health and wellbeing from birth, and how we as parents can make a true difference to their lives, as well as the ways in which can take care of ourselves as parents in the most wholesome way.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Many people have strong opinions about breastfeeding, but this is a matter of education, Breast milk is nutritionally complete, and the practice helps to connect a mother to her child.
  • We owe it our children to give them the best start in life. As their DNA forms, they must be given every chance possible, from the air being breathed, to the water and quality of food being consumed.
  • Raw foods are the most nutritionally complete, because they are unadulterated, and free from the process of human intervention. We should always try to eat whole foods when possible, and raw is even better. Even the act of cooking helps to break down the nutrients.
  • A typical meal can take up to 24 hours to digest. By practising intermittent fasting, we give our body time to digest properly, as well as repair in the wake of the digestion. The health benefits of fasting are now being widely recognised.

BEST MOMENTS

'If we weren't meant to give it to our children, then we wouldn't lactate at birth. It's that simple'

'A lot of things in our life are so overcomplicated, and there's no reason for it'

'The more you heat up your food, the more you deplete the nutrients'

'Mind over matter, mind over your body, being in control - that's a major thing that fasting brings to you'

17 May 2022Becoming The Best Version Of Yourself - with Gareth Jones01:30:09

Gareth Jones is a former rugby player, who has since turned his energy towards business and entrepreneurship. But the journey has not always been a straightforward one. It's a path that has seen Gareth tackling some of the biggest issues out there in order to become the best version of himself.

Gareth talks candidly to Steven about the issues he has faced, how he surmounted them and came back stronger, the role of men and masculinity in modern society, and how altered states and hypnotic states can help us to achieve more in the field of business.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When we become the best version of ourselves, we welcome in factors such as happiness, financial freedom, and impactful positivity on ourselves and those around us.
  • When we have damaging problems, and in particular problems with substance abuse and addiction, the instinct is to keep them hidden. But we cannot hope to exorcise our demons unless we bring them out into the light.
  • Success in itself can be addictive, but it requires control. When we see dips in our success, it can lead to the search for similar highs, which could prove dangerous if we don't have the correct mindset.
  • We can only truly connect with others on a global scale when we break down barriers and show each other what is possible through collaboration.

BEST MOMENTS

'I was at war with myself - at war with the world'

'Sport was where I found my way out - where I found my character'

'Being fearless isn't always a great thing, because you disregard other things'

'The subconscious is far more powerful than the conscious'

22 Oct 2019Change Your Diet, Change Your Life – With Coupe00:39:51

Coupe is a plant-based nutritionist, personal trainer, entrepreneur and father, who altered his life in radical ways when he became a personal trainer.

After experimenting with different foods, practice and diets, Coupe became convinced that plant-based nutrition is the way forward for the human race, and has been evangelising upon its incredible properties ever since. It’s a journey that’s ongoing, and a message that’s connected with everyone he meets.

Coupe joins Steven this week to discuss the reasons why this lifestyle works and what it can do for you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Water fasting is the practice by where all food and beverages are replaced with water only, for a specific (usually extended) period of time.

  • When it’s missing from the diet, people soon realise that it isn’t meat they miss. What they really miss are the flavours, such as barbecue and tomato, all of which are plant-based.

  • One of the main differences that you notice when embarking on a plant-based diet, is that your energy levels increase substantially, and your sleep is profoundly affected for the better.

  • Wheat contains gluten, and gluten contains morphine, which is an opiate derivative. When your body begins to crave wheat products, such as bread and pasta, it is this opiate derivative that it wants.

  • A good way to break a coffee addiction is to first research the harmful effects for yourself so that you are armed with the right knowledge, then replace it with something like chlorella or spirulina.

  • There’s a huge difference between eating for nutrition and eating to fill our stomachs. Fruits hydrate and are nutrient rich. They also prevent disease. There is a theory that suggests it may be in the interests of corporations and pharmaceutical companies to withhold certain nutrients in order to make us spend on costly cures.

  • Animals get huge amounts of protein from plants. Some then get protein from the animals. Coupe recommends cutting out the middle man and getting the plant protein yourself. That way you won’t get all the additives and bad ingredients caused when processing meat.

  • Lifting external weights for fitness causes your muscles to shorten. Using your own body weight for training causes your muscles to elongate, which is more ideal.

17 Mar 2021The Narratives Of Street Art - with John CRASH Matos01:09:04

This week, Steven talks to street artist and legendary New York graffiti artist, John CRASH Matos, whose mural works upon subway cars and dilapidated New York buildings is now regarded as one of the pioneering movements of the street art movement.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • All artists are the result of a story that brought them to the moment in their life where expression was needed. Sometimes it's best to be educated in the stories behind the artists in order to fully appreciate their work.
  • As an art form becomes more refined and accepted, its raw energy becomes diluted. Working because you're passionate about something is very different to working on a commission.
  • In order to make a success of ourselves, the story has to begin with hard work. We have to keep giving away equity until the quality of what we offer becomes synonymous with our name.
  • In the next year, street art, and the unrecognised heroes of the movement, are due to have their time, especially considering that art is now being seen as a safe haven in terms of financial investment.

BEST MOMENTS

'It was the narratives that hooked me'

'That was taking what we wore and interpreting it in a different way'

'If you want to become a success you need to give value first'

05 May 2020You Don’t Get Greater By Being A Hater00:13:16

Nobody’s perfect, but do we need to be told that, and especially by strangers?

After a particularly cruel experience lately, Steven reflects about the nature of negativity, where it comes from and why, and how you can rise above it as you continue on life’s journey.

KEY TAKEAWAY

  • Part of the reason that people try to derail you with negativity, is to distract you from your missions in life. All that means is that you’re getting somewhere.
  • People come at you when they’re unhappy with themselves in some way. It’s a way of elevating themselves in their own mind.
  • The true greats don’t waste their time trying to bring other people down. They’re far too busy sticking to their plan and achieving greatness.

BEST MOMENTS

’Staying calm and methodical is always the best option’

‘What you throw out to the world, you’re going to get back’

‘You can either react or respond’

21 Jun 2023Harlem Eubank On Being Boxing's Unstoppable Superhero01:08:26

Harlem Eubank is one of the most dazzling talents in British boxing today, as well as a respected member of the Eubank sporting dynasty.

In the second part of his conversation with Steven, he discusses the factors that have driven him to become the most unstoppable force in boxing, the crucial differences between boxing and other forms of sporting combat, and how the loss of a valued family member has shaped the course he's taken and the man he has become.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Perseverance is the key to progression. Things don't always work out, so you have to push through and onwards in order to grow.
  • Many put the mixed arts of MMA and boxing together, as though they're similar disciplines, but boxing is a force all its own. The stances used for MMA mean that not as much power can be transferred through blows.
  • Those we love and cherish never truly leave us. If their influence was powerful enough in life, then the conversations will continue internally forever.
  • Being part of a boxing dynasty means that inevitably, a conflict of interest can sometimes occur. But family always must come first, and respect is something we should embrace at all times.

BEST MOMENTS

'You do seem like you're going to be an unstoppable force'

'Things don't come overnight, but with perseverance and hard work and dedication, things will work out the way they're meant to'

'It's a fight I would love. A fight I would relish. A fight I'd be very confident in'

01 Jun 2021Recognise Your Passion And Follow The Path Towards It - with Naomi Wallens01:08:00

This week, Steven talks to artist Naomi Wallens, one of the standout artists at the Saatchi Gallery in 2020, and whose sculpture, photography and painting work is fast becoming one of the most recognisable and sought-after in the art world.

Naomi talks about the business behind the creative industry, how she leapt from a corporate role into the art world, and the importance of happiness and fulfilment when it comes to our path in life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We sometimes do not begin in the field to which we are called. It takes time to discover the pursuits that ignite our passions.
  • Sometimes investments into our artistic brands do not pay off in the short term, but play a huge part in the evolving respect we accumulate - allowing our brands to become recognisable and trusted.
  • There is no greater pleasure in life than seeing someone fulfilled in the things they do. We are conditioned to believe that money is the real aim in life, when in fact, fulfilment and happiness count for a lot more.
  • When you find your true path in life, the energy you produce from feeling happy and fulfilled will cause more good things to happen to you. The universe works in far greater alignment

BEST MOMENTS

'I followed a journey that was normal for the world I grew up in'

'You either make your own plan or you become someone else's'

'You see your kids' journeys, and it inspires me and the things I put into my own work'

'If you allow yourself the liberation to be who you want to be, you get luckier. The universe works better with you'

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Health and wellness are about taking a holistic approach - feeding the mind, the body and the attitude that carries us through life.
  • When we surround ourselves with people who push through challenge and make the most of each day, we become go-getters through osmosis.
  • Those who are reserved often finds that life's wildest opportunities pass them by. It's always wise to say yes when chances appear because that's where the adventures are.

Alexis Landot is an extreme climber who has been described as "half man and half machine" due to his incredible physical feats.

Alexis joins Steven to discuss the importance of using your time on earth wisely, where he discovered the instinct to climb and the many forms it takes, and the perfect synthesis of mind and body that climbing produces.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Never waste a day in your life - you only have a finite amount of them. Treat each day as precious and get the most out of each one.
  • Landscapes are roughly the same in any environment - they contain ranges of surfaces and terrains - whether urban or in nature.
  • Climbing is about the perfect alignment of mind and body. It requires complete focus and dedication, but climbing creates this fusion.

16 Mar 2023Dean Forbes On Victory In Business And How To Be The Toughest Alpha01:00:33

Dean Forbes has been named one of the UK’s 50 most ambitious business leaders by Lloyds Banking Group and The Daily Telegraph. He was also named in the J.P.Morgan sponsored Powerlist 2021, 2022 and 2023 as one of the 100 most influential Black people in the UK.

Dean joins Steven for a frank discussion about business, motivation, resilience, the power of victory, and how he's become one of the most powerful alphas in the business game.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The only thing that ever really matters in business is achieving the outcome you came for. Winning is everything.
  • Your network directly impacts the level of success you have. If you surround yourself with the best, you will be the best - it's that simple.
  • If you feel threatened by things and show it, then people won't respect you. The power of an alpha shines through if they can shake off the fear and show strength.
  • If all you're chasing is money then prepare to be disappointed. Most businesses fail, so wealth creation is not guaranteed. There has to be another reason for business hunger.

BEST MOMENTS

'The only thing that counts is the victory'

'I would attribute the vast majority of my success to the people in my life'

'That's an important part of being an alpha - not to feel threatened'

29 Mar 2023Supercar Superstar Carl Hartley On Immortalising The Family Name01:24:29

Carl Hartley is the co-owner and director of the Tom Hartley supercar dealership, which since 1973 has blazed a trail in the world of aspirational automobile ownership.

Carl has been an integral part of the business since the age of 12 years old when he left primary school in order to focus his life upon the family brand, and in this episode, he talks candidly to Steven about where he finds the extraordinary drive that has catapulted him to the pinnacle of business success, why the luxury market has thrived even during economic downturns, and how he and his family have turned their name into one of the mightiest brands in the world.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Social media has meant that the aspirational lifestyle has been overdone slightly in terms of promotion, meaning that there has been an impact in what it means to own a luxury car.
  • If you want to hit the bigger goals in life you have to be moving constantly. Don't ever sit back and assume you've reached the finish line - keep going.
  • There are certain intangibles that Tom Hartley provide that other dealers simply cannot match - price and terms are a huge part, but the actual purchasing experience is second to none.
  • The luxury brands have proven time and time again that even during the most turbulent financial times, they are a safe haven for investment. Even during COVID, the luxury sector thrived and attracted incredible amounts of investment.

BEST MOMENTS

Steven talks to Ashley Theophane, the British former professional boxer who competed from 2003 to 2020, and who held the British super-lightweight title from 2011 to 2012.

Ashley discusses the importance of hard work when it comes to reaching your goals in life, the pros and cons of social media, what life was like at the top of his game, and the lessons he's taken from the world of sport into his own life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We often only see the positive side of someone on social media, but this doesn't tell the whole story. There are lessons to be taken from the challenges, too.
  • We have to remember that life is beautiful and exists in real terms outside of technology. We have to show future generations that life outside of tech is far better and more productive.
  • The people who achieve more in life are far too busy looking for positives than they are in looking for reasons to take others down.

15 Sep 2020One Bad Decision Can Interrupt Your Momentum00:07:40

In this week’s show, Steven talks about how one small, bad decision, can interrupt your progress and derail the momentum you’ve spent so long building up.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Making the decision to party hard can lead to indulging in alcohol, junk food, and less of a desire to keep fit and train. All that hard work is suddenly on the line.
  • Not taking care of yourself can lead to a drastic decrease in your mental faculties. If you can’t think, you can’t sell. If you can’t sell then the consequences becomes all too real.
  • If you know that a decision you’re about to make will derail your momentum, get yourself out of there. Keep your focus on the progress you’ve made, and stick to it.

31 May 2023Mindset Master Lewis Raymond Taylor On Going From Criminal To Multimillionaire01:09:01

Lewis Raymond Taylor is a prime example of standing your ground and never taking no for an answer. After surviving a traumatic childhood filled with abuse of all kinds, Lewis chose to fight back, promising himself that life could be different if he took back control.

Since then, Lewis has overcome his own personal demons and has risen up to become one of the world's most inspiring mindset coaches, preaching the message that if he could turn his own ruinous life around then anyone can. In this episode, Lewis talks candidly to Steven about the incredible business he's built in order to empower others, what it takes to come back from the blackest hells, and how you can turn any kind of negative into positivity and light.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When we are lacking in certain types of love, we compensate by throwing ourselves into other things. A lack of nurturing thus often leads to negative beginnings in life.
  • If we don't take control of life then nothing will ever change. We need to understand that doing the same thing again and again will only produce the same result.
  • Change comes slowly. Take it one step at a time and move forward in small ways and before you know it you'll be in a totally different way and shape.

BEST MOMENTS

'We help people build freedom based online coaching courses'

'I liked people thinking that I was crazy'

'I kept doing the same things over again and expecting a different result'

'Prison is one of the most peaceful places I've ever been'

28 Jul 2022A Collaboration With Blek Le Rat00:51:32

When visiting Blek le Rat's studio in Paris this July, we discussed the history of his work and the future collaboration with Woodbury House. An artist inspired by Richard Hambleton, who went on to influence one of the most recognised street artists of all time: Banksy

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Street art is perhaps one of the purest expressions of the populace. It is the graphical representation of how the streets themselves are feeling.
  • When we find ourselves struck and inspired by the works of others, it can push us on to want to emulate and transcend in our own way.
  • Gallery works by street artists are a way of preserving the feeling, the mood, the place in time. It should be viewed as a permanent record of a specific moment.

BEST MOMENTS

'For the first time, I saw street art. It was a revelation to me'

'It was something so new and so disturbing.

'The work in the street is 100% important. The work in the gallery is also important because if we don't show it there, there will not be a memory of what happened in the street'

08 Oct 2019Mental Health and Fitness with Andrea Corbett, Founder of FOCUS00:59:42

In this episode of The Steven Sully Study Podcast, Steven talks to Andrea Corbett, the Founder of FOCUS, to talk about her struggles with mental illness and how fitness has helped her get through it. Though Andrea got professional help, she didn’t want to depend on drugs. So, she started looking for an alternative to fully get better—she started exercising to get those needed endorphin release, which she normally gets from the bad habit of eating sweets or consuming alcohol.

It was quite life changing. She now values and advocates self-care and nutrition, which she never did before. As a wellbeing coach and mentor, she continues to share her stories to other people so they can also fully live their lives.

Join Steven and Andrea today to learn more about the benefits of fitness on mental health.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A normal feeling depressed differs from someone who has been diagnosed with depression. For those who have been clinically depressed, it lasts for a longer time and needs help from a professional.
  • She was taking anti-depressants for a while but she noticed that she was becoming dependent on the drugs, so she started looking for a more natural alternative. For Andrea, it was focusing on physical fitness that has helped her heal.
  • Some are just used to ‘masking’ their ill mental state. Not all happy people you encounter have a healthy mental well-being.
  • Have a healthy diet. Andrea was able to let go of alcohol and sweets, which she really loves. Your appearance also improves when you take in nutritious food. Also, drink lots of water.
  • What does Andrea do when she’s preparing for a competition?
    • Be committed. Plan and trust the process.
    • Believe in yourself that you can do it.
  • Every morning, Andrea does the SAVERS morning routine. The six parts of the routine are silence, affirmations, visualisation, exercise, reading, and scribing.
  • Find what suits for you. There’s a right diet and exercise that will apply to you. It’s different for every individual, so better consult a trainer or a health expert.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “Having a burnout is actually a disease.”
  • “When I started creating my ultimate self, positive things started to happen.”
  • “Despite not knowing how things are going to pan out, just give it a go.”
  • “If I’m not doing it for myself, how am I going to do it for anybody else?”
  • “You can’t put a price on happiness.”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Andrea Corbett is the Founder of F.O.C.U.S (Focus On Creating your Ultimate Self), a wellbeing coach & mentor, and the speaker for the Mental Health Foundation. Andrea is also the UKBFF 2018 British Champion & Pro Bodybuilder.

ABOUT THE HOST

The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should focus on several key areas to be a well-rounded individual. Success should not be just one thing like money, for example, it should also comprise a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made some cock-ups, I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit of success.

I started from leaving school at 16 with very poor school results to pursue a career in plumbing following the directions of my parents that then lead me to a barrister's chamber and then to a sales floor. From here, I established a foothold in the sales market promoting financial products as well as being a founder of an art agency that has a Soho based art studio.

In addition, I have invested into an urban fashion brand and into a wellness tech company, and my latest addition to the business portfolio is a property company that which creates HMO's in Medway, Kent. The diverse range of industries I find myself in has allowed me to create wealth that enables me to be my own boss so I can pursue my dreams.

As a former boxer and avid sportsman, I find there are similarities between the running of businesses and competing. In my episodes, I will be sharing some of my experiences to explore deeper these connections and how they may bring you success."

05 Apr 2022Success Comes Through Hard Work And Imagination - with Terry Stone02:00:34

Steven once again talks to actor and film producer, Terry Stone, who began life as a rave promoter, but who in 2003 switched gears entirely and began a new phase in his life as an actor.

Terry rejoins the show to talk about his new forays into different avenues of business, including cryptocurrency and NFTs, as well as the world of today and how the challenges that keep presenting themselves to society each day are helping to shape the world of tomorrow.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Whatever we think of the world in its current state, no one can deny that we are living in unprecedented, tumultuous and world-shaping times. This feels like the beginning of a new world, and a farewell to the one that came before.
  • We should always be looking for the next challenge. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Find what you’re happy doing and stick at it.
  • COVID and its restrictions have fundamentally changed the way the world works. Digital and remote versions of life have overtaken the way we do everything - whether this turns out to be positive or negative in the long run remains to be seen.
  • The important ingredient in achieving success is not necessarily gaining the right skills or talents to be the best. It's about having the right mindset in the first place. It's about always believing that you can succeed and being prepared to put in the work

BEST MOMENTS

'The only good thing about COVID< Brexit and the war, is that they say it comes in threes!'

'I could've sat on my hands and done nothing. But I thought - go for it'

'You need to become resilient and you need to become resourceful'

'In life, people like to make excuses about why they can't achieve stuff'

Pierce joins Steven to talk about his fascinating life, his goals, his aspirations, and roads towards which he's heading in life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The words you use and the things you say can either make you or destroy you. Sometimes words are more powerful than actions.
  • You have to face the consequences of your actions if you're trying to take shortcuts towards success. If you don't stick to the straight and narrow, you have to be prepared to face the music.
  • There's a misconception amongst young people entering the world of sports. Just because you're in that world doesn't mean you're instantly set for life. You have to work hard and play the long game.
  • You can often gauge the level of success that you can expect, by the self-belief you hold on to. If you can be at the bottom and still come out fighting, then chances are you're going to do well

BEST MOMENTS

'Boxing is a dangerous sport. You can go out there and kill someone'

'In the ring it's kill or be killed'

'I believe that I had the talent, the heart and the dedication'

19 May 2020The Power Of Passion – with Skip Archimedes01:15:55

In this week’s special episode, Steven talks to Skip Archimedes, a former athlete who’s made it his mission to empower people through health and vitality, also focusing on improving mental health through positivity and achievement.

Skip’s story is an inspiring one, beginning with a childhood plagued by ill health, and transforming into a tale of resilience and courage that’s still playing out today.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Decreased workload makes the body weak. In Skip’s case, a childhood spent at the mercy of health issues was corrected when he fought through with exercise.
  • We absorb life through three modalities: mind, body and spirit. They all require nourishment in order for us to feel accomplishment and happiness.
  • Internet connection has created a false sense of nourishment. We absorb life through our senses, and yet demonstrably, internet connection feeds none of these.
  • Health should be the foundation that we build our entire lives upon. It is the keystone to ensuring that we can always be present, and unaffected by the factors that suppress our competitors.
  • Humanity is in need of a huge culture shift. We are the only species on earth that actively contributes toward its own destruction

BEST MOMENTS

’Nothing is going to electrify you like passion’

’No matter what your education is like, there are plenty of opportunities out there for you’

’Spirit opens you up to more life’

‘Health is our greatest wealth’

‘Make sure your cup of life is filled, and whatever spills over, we give back to life'

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Never discount the value of the small lessons that build you up incrementally during your youth, Even a casual constructive word can change your life.
  • Sales is about building a rapport with absolutely anybody. It's about recognising a need, and using a story and a journey to get them to a solution.

  • Controlling your emotions is the key to self-mastery. Sometimes you have to let your emotions filter out into the ground without displaying them. If someone fails to get a reaction from us, it is very powerful.

BEST MOMENTS

'You build your own dreams or help somebody else build theirs'

23 Oct 2024Josh James on the Art of Stand-Up and the Pressure to Be Funny00:52:02

Steven talks to comedian Josh James about the surprising world of stand-up comedy. They discuss the challenges of public speaking, the evolution of Josh's comedic style, and the pressures comedians face in social settings.

Josh shares his journey into comedy, inspired by legends like Billy Connolly, and reflects on tough gigs that shaped his career. Together they also explores the impact of social media on comedians, the nuances of crowd work, and the differences in comedic styles among various performers.

Key Takeaways

  • Public speaking can be daunting for many, but with practice and experience, it becomes easier. Josh emphasises that performing stand-up comedy is a skill that improves over time, much like any other job.

  • Tough gigs are an essential part of a comedian's growth and can help to shape the performer you become

  • Social media can be a double-edged sword for comedians. While it provides a platform for reaching a wider audience, it also exposes them to both positive and negative feedback.

  • A comedian's style evolves over time through experience and self-discovery. The best aim to bring their own world to the stage, rather than fitting into a specific comedic category.

BEST MOMENTS

"I can honestly say I've been doing it 10 years now and it's like any job... you go through them times of it going amazing... but then you also go through times of it going terribly."

"You only get better from tough gigs. That's what I've found, you know. And persevering."

"If you think you can do better, why don't you fucking come up here and give it a go yourself?"

"I just feel like I'm being a realist... I just work hard and try and get better every day."

Simon Squibb has spent 10 years as an entrepreneur in the UK and 20 years as an entrepreneur in Hong Kong. He started his first company when he was homeless at 15 years old, and he sold his last company Fluid to PwC. He has also invested in over 70 startups in the last 15 years. Today Simon is the founder of the worlds first Help2Earn system, a platform that helps people learn how to start and scale a business for free while those that help get paid. Simon's mission is to help 10 million people start a business of their own, and fix the education system.

Simon joins Steven to talk about how he created the life-changing exit that enabled him to lead his empowering mission to help others, why purpose matters, and how he channeled the pains of his past into a mission that is slowly but surely changing the world for the better.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Life is a journey, and journeys all contain highs and lows. Simon is an example of how you can fight back from the depths of failure to the heights of success.
  • If you leverage pain in a positive way, then there is no limit to the potential you can achieve. If you don't have painful experiences, then you can't call yourself experienced enough to help others.
  • The greatest entrepreneurs are the ones who recognise optimism as the best fuel in life. There are no such things as downturns if you remain positive - a challenging time for some is always an opportunity for the greatest thinkers.
  • Instead of moaning about why you can't achieve success, you should instead be asking the question "What problem can I solve?"

BEST MOMENTS

'I should never have to worry about having an income again, which now gives me the chance to do what I want to do'

'Bad luck can have a good luck element to it'

'You've got to be an optimist to be a success'

24 Mar 2021The Heroes Of Street Art - with LA II aka Angel Ortiz00:49:57

In a continuing series of conversations with the pioneers of the street art movement, Steven talks to American pop and graffiti artist LA II, aka Angel Ortiz, known throughout the street art scene for his unique blend of influences ranging from Chinese calligraphy to pictograph-like cave paintings.

LA II talks about his story, his connection to the art world and those who inhabit it, his connection to Richard Hambleton, and the places from which he draws inspiration.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We take inspiration from the world we know and love best. For LA II, this was found on the streets of New York. This is why he remains in the city to this day.
  • The way we are portrayed in the media is not always the truth.. The stories we leave behind can be twisted. Only those who know us best have the right to tell our stories.
  • Fame is a strange game of chance. Sometimes it is sparked by the associations we form, which can lead us to bigger and better things, while the associations themselves remain influential, but obscure.
  • The search for art and the expression of art, is a search for the truth. Art allows us to connect with an expressed truth, and by doing so, learn more about who we are.

BEST MOMENTS

'I'm still in New York - I'm a true New Yorker'

'He wasn't an addict - he was an artist'

'We wasn't high, we was busy tagging up'

'You're the unsung heroes of the street art community'

12 Dec 2022Professional Footballer Jay Bothroyd On The Pressures Of Fame01:32:42

Jay Bothroyd is an ex-professional footballer with a glittering career that spanned across the 21st century, including stints for Coventry City, Wolverhampton, Cardiff City and QPR.

Jay talks to Steven about the pressures of fame and the effect upon your life when you live in the public eye, how mental health issues can affect your performance at the highest level, and how the world of football has changed for better and worse.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You gain far more respect, especially from your peers, when you deal with tribulation and setbacks in a more reserved manner.
  • Many assume that professional footballers are happy just because they earn staggering amounts of money, but this isn't true. Most do it for the love of the game, which is why, if they're unhappy on the pitch, then it can prove devastating to their mental health.
  • The world of football earning has changed dramatically. It used to be that you were paid well if you performed well. Nowadays, you're paid well if they believe you might perform well one day.

BEST MOMENTS

'Can you be that depressed if you're worth $500 million? Of course you can'

'Money can't buy you happiness'

'I'm a real product of my environment'

23 Mar 2022Victory Begins in The Mind - with George Groves01:53:30

George Groves is a former professional boxer who competed from 2008 to 2018. He held the WBA (Super) super-middleweight title from 2017 to 2018, and regionally the European, British, and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles between 2010 and 2014. He was ranked as the world's best active super-middleweight by BoxRec, The Ring magazine and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board.

George joins Steven to talk about life inside and outside of the ring, how the development of the mind has contributed to the physical victories, and how he has managed to navigate the sometimes uneven road to fame across his incredible career.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Life is about narrative, whether expressed through art, sport, endeavour or purpose. Every decision we make contributes to our own story.
  • Success requires sacrifice. Sometimes we reach the top through leaving behind other passions. Every rise to the top has required dedication, resilience and hard work.
  • Mental development is equally as important as physical progress, especially in the world of sport. We cannot hope to succeed if we do not attain mental resilience and strength.
  • Many assume that affirmation comes from the adoration from others. But if we are truly comfortable in our own skin, and have the highest respect for ourselves and what we can achieve, then validation should come from within.

BEST MOMENTS

'If you want to invest in stories, then art is the way to go'

'Every fight felt like a life and death situation'

'I was developing my mind as well as my body'

'I like individuals, but I don't like "people". This means I don't crave the fame'

26 Jan 2023Kidd Waya On The Power Of Self-Acceptance and How To Succeed In Life00:47:25

Kidd Waya comes from a long line of survivors, entrepreneurs and business-minded people who think outside of the box, and who aren't afraid to put themselves out there in their quest for success.

This week, listen as he joins Steven to talk about his story, his connection to art, and also the story of his own struggles with self-acceptance and how he used the pains of his past to carve out his own route through life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The true artists of the world are the ones who step outside of the formula and do their own thing. You can't plot new paths in this world unless you go off the beaten track.
  • Self-acceptance is the key to personal happiness. But breaking free of the self-loathing we secretly have is tough. Breaking free is everything.
  • Television doesn't always reflect reality, despite the "Reality TV" tag that gets applied to these kinds of shows. You're always performing, on and off screen.
  • Legacies don't always have to be business related. Sometimes the love you leave behind is far more long-lasting and impactful.

BEST MOMENTS

'He wanted to live the life that he wanted to live'

'When you're stuck in that prison, where you're not happy with yourself, it's very hard to get out'

'People need to understand how powerful it is to free yourself'

'I would choose this life a million times over'

20 Feb 2019Schoony; From Boy Soldier to Branded, Hyperrealist Sculptures For The Society of Today.00:58:29

In this interview, Steven is in discussion with Schoony, who exploded onto the Art scene with his iconic sculpture ‘Boy Soldier. His hyperrealist sculptures question war, mortality and contemporary society.

Listen in to hear about his fascinating journey and the experiences that have shaped his life and work

  KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Where did the name Schoony come from?

My name is really Tristan Schoonraad but it was shortened to Schoony at school and it stuck, as far as I know, there’s nothing else called Schoony apart from a malt shop in America.

  • What’s your background?

I didn’t do very at school and left as soon as I could. I  went straight into a job working on films as a plaster. My Dad was a plasterer and worked on the sets for films and I worked alongside him.

As I started work my dad began work on the creatures for the Jim Henson film ‘Dark Crystal’ and I was then able to develop my skills in making props.

  • When did you transition from making props to art?

I was working with the best sculptors in the world and there was the opportunity to have some items in an exhibition at New Tate Britain and they all sold.

  • Where do the colourways you use come from?

I use architecture as an inspiration for the varying colour combinations and effects I use. My sculptures  and artworks are available in varying specialist colourways.

  • How important is it to have focus and goals?

It’s important to be able to be a child and have the opportunity to be creative. The education system is currently designed against creativity. As children begin school creativity is actively discouraged and its never a focus for their learning.

  • What are your goals?

I tend to go with the flow but I do visualise having a beautiful house so this is a current goal and in my work, I would like to achieve a sculpture on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

  • A  vision board can be used at home and at work. Goals can be spread over 7 different areas and this will cover all areas of your life.  Goals are there to keep you focused and driven but as soon as you reach one you set the next so its and an ever-evolving journey in pursuit of your goals.

  • What have been your best moments?

Working on films especially Rambo in Thailand as Sylvester Stallone was amazing to work with. Having a gallery show with my works up on the wall was an amazing experience. All the things I have done have shaped me in reaching the point I am at now.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I started making props for films such as ‘Space Precinct’ and ‘Private Ryan’

‘It’s so important, no matter how successful you become, to keep humble and be nice with good energy as it attracts good people’

‘I couldn’t believe it, someone likes what I’m doing’

‘Not all galleries may have the right investors, collectors for you’

‘You’re never going to do anything because you’re a dreamer’

  ‘They’ve really shaped their sector’

‘I knew I was going to do that’

04 Jun 2019Meeting Terry Stone – Actor, Director and Producer01:09:22

Steven talks to actor and film producer, Terry Stone, who began life as a rave promoter, but who in 2003 switched gears entirely and began a new phase in his life as an actor.

From an early age, Terry refused to accept the status quo, and from humble beginnings, chose to do whatever it took to achieve his dreams in life. Hear Terry talk about his recipe for a successful life, as well as the core beliefs that have shaped his outlook.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Self-belief will give you anything you want in life. By telling yourself that you can make it, by giving yourself constant affirmations, you can achieve all your goals in life.
  • The recession caused Terry to lose his house and his job, and at his lowest ebb, he could very well have decided that all his chances had passed him by. But after attending a rave one night, he saw the potential in a new career in promotions and ended up making a success of himself.
  • From his sales background, Terry used his natural charisma to become a leading force in the early 90’s rave culture, putting on events and marketing them using his innate entrepreneurial skills.
  • You learn far more from failure than you do from success. It’s not about how many times you get knocked down, it’s about how many times you get up afterwards.
  • Too many people seem to think that they can achieve their goals in life without working for them. This is an unfortunate side-effect of celebrity culture. But those who put the work in, always reap the richest rewards.
  • Drama taught Terry how to stand up in front of a crowd and perform, a skill he applies not just to his acting career, but also to his experience in sales.
  • Terry believes that people like Nigel Farage are doing so well because their message is simple and uncluttered. People who speak with clarity and directness will always appeal to those that people find confusing.
  • When Terry took up acting, he did everything he could to learn about the craft. He took classes, took coaching, and applied his same driven spirit into this new career. There’s always room to learn, and room to grow, no matter what your profession is.
  • Terry’s most valuable advice for aspiring actors is to examine your ambitions and make sure they’re compatible with the actor’s life. You must be prepared to work hard and to expect many failures along the way. Perseverance is everything, and realistically, many acting careers do not match the dreams that many aspiring actors have.
  • We should always be looking for the next challenge. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Find what you’re happy doing and stick at it.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Anybody can achieve anything if they put their mind to it’

‘It all stems from having that positive outlook’

‘If you’re putting it out there and you’re working hard, you’re going to get stuff’

‘You could be a genius, but if you can’t speak to someone, look them in the eye, then so what?’

‘People become actors because it’s fun. People want to be King Lear or a cockney or a psychopath’

‘It’s no good being the richest person in the graveyard’

‘The only advice that’s ever meant something to me is “Be Yourself”’

‘Winners never quit and quitters never win’

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • With much financial instability, many institutions are looking for sound, bulletproof investment opportunities in which to keep their money. Art has become one of these havens.

12 Apr 2022Be Who You Are And Own It - with Henry Conway01:02:14

Henry Conway is a socialite, party promoter, author and fashion journalist, occasionally self-styled as "Queen Sloane".

Henry joins Steven to talk about his incredible life, the state of social spaces in London - past and present - the ways in which we should think of the social scene, how social life has become far more liberating and diverse, how media has changed, and how to always be the life of the party.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • London provides a city landscape that plays home to not just the international community, but one of the most vibrant, all-encompassing cultural landscapes in the world.
  • Many assume that clubs are merely in existence to provide a place for recreation and fun. That's very much the case, but it's also a wonderful environment for networking, providing countless opportunities for meaningful connection.
  • There has always been a certain stigma associated with lifestyle, including wealth. Nowadays, we are far more free thinking and liberated, enough to be more comfortable with who we are. People are being encouraged to own who they are.
  • Celebrities often work in league with news outlets, providing them with fodder for their pages in return for payment. But the effect of this relationship has only fuelled the public's desire for more news - for more scandal.

BEST MOMENTS

'I'm a multi-disciplined character'

'Be who you are and own it!'

'In my clubbing lifetime gay has become cool'

'Create the drama - create the content'

Bun B is an American rapper, best known as one half of the southern rap duo UGK (UnderGround Kingz), a group he formed in 1987 alongside Pimp C. Aside from his work with UGK, Bun B has released five solo albums, including 2010's Trill OG, which received the rare 5-mic rating from The Source. He is also a guest lecturer at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Connecting with people is one of the most valuable and powerful things in life. Your network is your net worth. Possessions pass, achievements fade, but people and connections last a lifetime.
  • Fast food gives you a quick rush of energy, but the long term result can often be damaging. We need to make sure that we put better things into ourselves for long term gains.
  • Language is one of the most powerful tools we possess. We should treat it as one of our greatest assets and work on developing it each day.

BEST MOMENTS

18 May 2021Success Is A Never-Ending Fight - with Jordan Reynolds01:05:17

Steven is joined by professional boxer, Jordan Reynolds, to discuss the similarities between the world of business and sport, how the travelling community have come to represent the dominating players in the sport, and why your background is never a barrier to where you want to be in life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Businessmen and boxers have much in common when it comes to mindset. They both must possess determination, skill, perseverance and strategy.
  • For a long time, the fighters from the travelling community have been content to rule the amateur leagues, but now, they are breaking through to the major competitions and dominating there.
  • Those at the bottom of society know how to fight the hardest, plus they appreciate success far more when it arrives. Just because your beginnings are humble, doesn't mean your future has to be.
  • Half the battle in life, sport or business, is in the preparation, and the strategies employed on the day. Never discount the value in being ready.

28 Aug 2024The Financial Realities of Professional Boxing - with Bryant Jennings01:22:31

Steven talks to boxing legend Bryant Jennings about his upcoming fight in Philadelphia, his belief in the law of attraction, and his thoughts on the changing landscape of boxing.

Bryant reflects on his past fights against Klitschko and shares insights on potential future matchups. The conversation delves into the complexities of the boxing world, touching on the misconceptions about money in the sport and the challenges faced by fighters in managing their finances

Key Takeaways

  • Money in boxing is not evenly distributed, with only the top fighters making substantial amounts.

  • The perception of boxers being wealthy is often a misconception, as many fighters struggle financially.

  • The current boxing landscape has fewer fighters making more money, compared to the past where more fighters shared the earnings.

  • Managing money wisely is crucial for boxers, as financial success is not solely dependent on earnings but also on financial management.

  • Only the top superstars in boxing, such as Canelo and AJ, are able to secure significant financial rewards, while others may struggle to make ends meet.

BEST MOMENTS

"You always have to speak things into existence and never speak of any doubt."

"I think he's complete. He's done everything that he can do, and just rightfully so."

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You can never take the advantages that real world experience bring. Recognition on paper can only take you so far. You earn far more by being out in the world.

  • Technology has allowed many more diverse voices to be heard. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, there will always be someone out that'll find a home in your words.
  • Your net worth is determined by your network. You can always climb higher by associating yourself with the circle of people to which you aspire.

19 Feb 2020A Moving Post, From Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson00:11:33

In this episode Steven explains why he thinks it’s important to follow people who aren’t necessarily the typical entrepreneur because you can take learnings from all different people. He also discusses one of his main inspirations and how he has used a recent post that he’s posted to motivate and inspire him.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It can be good to take learnings from people who you find interesting or inspire you, for example Dwayne Johnson e.g. ‘The Rock’.
  • Keep an eye out on what these people are doing and how you can take what they’re doing and allow it to inspire you.
  • Implement good things, that you’ve taken from watching these people, into your own life.
  • Whether you’re in business or not, we will all have to say goodbye at one point. So don’t waste your time doing something that you’ll regret.
  • Be a trial blazer, be a trend setter and inspire others to step up and become a better version of themselves. It’s not too late.
  • Think about what people will say after you pass away, you can change this so look to constantly push yourself to be the best you can be.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If it’s good enough for me then it’s good enough to share

‘Don’t let a moment go past and wish that you had one more shot’’

‘No one’s invincible’

19 Oct 2021The Unexpected Route To Happiness - with David Cotterill01:25:39

This week, Steven talks to former professional footballer, David Cotterill, who has since turned the disciplines and wisdom he found in the world of sport, towards the profession of mental health consultancy and public speaking, going on to found the David Cotterill Foundation, dedicated to solving mental health and addiction issues.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It doesn't matter if experiences have been bad or good, there are always learnings we can take in order to develop and grow.
  • Mind-set is the key to overcoming the problems of addiction. The same powers of mind that help us to win, can also help us to reach higher when we hit the bottom.
  • We should never place the weight of expectation too heavily upon those we nurture. Life is what we dream it to be. We should never crush the dreams of those we guide in order to achieve our own goals.
  • Material possessions can only improve certain moments in life. They never provide true, lasting happiness. Happiness comes from pushing ourselves further, achieving more, and becoming the best version of ourselves.

BEST MOMENTS

'The definition of wisdom is learning from other people's experiences - good or bad'

'I knew what I wanted, and I knew that I'd practiced enough in order to achieve those goals'

'It's important that children follow their own dreams, and not their parents'

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When it comes to the world of celebrity, there's always a point that can make you or break you. It's a very tricky line to walk, and if not handled correctly, can lead to detrimental effects on your health - mental and physical.
  • Taking a step into the celebrity world does mean that your life opens up to the world, and it can be an unstoppable force. You need to live your life and be happy and not let is affect you.
  • Sport has the power to help you level up in ways you cannot imagine, and not just physically. Sport requires discipline, which fortifies your resilience and mindset.

19 Apr 2023Mark Wright- BBC's Apprentice Champion, £173 Into £10,000,00001:02:44

Mark Wright is the co-founder (with Lord Alan Sugar) of digital marketing agency, Climb Online, having been crowned champion on BBC's The Apprentice, and winning a life-changing contract that has since turned him into a multi-millionaire. Mark has also gone on to be named Entrepreneur Of The Year in 2018, and one of Forbes 30 Under 30, staking his claim as one of the most visionary and innovative business minds currently operating in the world.

Mark joins Steven for the second time to talk about how life has changed since their last conversation, how fatherhood has shifted his perspective, how he turned a simple £173 into a ten figure fortune, and why the power of sales should be a primary lesson for any entrepreneur.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you aspire to being in a place in the world, you have to insert yourself whether you're invited or not. Put yourself in the place you wish to end up.
  • Money is all very well, but the real power comes from the profile boost you gain when you hit true success. When people know who you are, it makes life far easier.
  • Never chase money. Don't make it your mission in life. Chase what makes you happy and gives you purpose. You'll live a far happier life, and money will come as a byproduct.
  • There's a huge link between the mindsets required by professional sportsmen and successful business operators. They all need resilience, discipline, focus and purpose.

BEST MOMENTS

'You've got to be where you want to be - fake it till you make it'

Matt shares his personal story of being bullied as a child and how it ultimately motivated him to pursue martial arts and become successful. He also discusses his friendship with Michael Jackson and his role as a trusted friend and unofficial bodyguard, with insights into Matt's entrepreneurial journey and the impact of his martial arts business, which has grown to over 1,750 locations worldwide with an estimated net worth of over £120 million

Key Takeaways

  • Matt built a successful martial arts business, which has now expanded to over 1,750 locations worldwide, with an estimated net worth of over £120 million.
  • Matt developed a close friendship with the late Michael Jackson, who trusted him as a friend and confidant. Their friendship was based on mutual trust and loyalty, and Matt provided personal security for Michael when needed.
  • Matt emphasises the importance of brand value and the power of social proof in building a successful business. He believes that his association with high-profile individuals like Michael Jackson has contributed to the success and recognition of his brand.

"If it wasn't for being bullied, and your viewers list might be thinking this is strange, I met him on national TV for the first time, I think in 32 years. He reached out to me and he said, Matt, I'm really sorry for how I treated you at school, in infant school." -

"I am just a martial artist. That is what I am. That is my passion. I love it. That's all I am. I just learn how to give the public what they want." "I was a million pound a year earning at 18 years old, which wasn't that difficult to do for me. That was very, very simple."

12 May 2020Steven is Interviewed by UK Investor Magazine About the Safety Of Art Investment00:31:35

With a looming recession ahead, people are looking for safe ways to store their money, as well as increase the value of their wealth. The art market is largely being seen as one of these secure havens.

Certainly that’s the viewpoint of UK Investor Magazine, who interviewed Steven this week in order to get the facts about this rapidly-growing assurance, as well as some of the best ways in which art investors can get started.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The returns on even the lower end of Hambleton’s works now can be astronomical. Since his dealings began, entry level works have leapt in value from around £4k to £40k.
  • First time investors would do well to research and educate themselves. Look for the up and coming artists whose works are about to explode in value and interest.
  • The key to securing a rising star’s work is in asking three questions:
    • Is the artist backed by a recognised gallery?
    • Is the artist backed by a respected art dealer/family/collector?
    • Is the artist backed by a recognised museum?
  • It’s not always about buying the piece of art itself. It’s also about buying the experience and the story. Banksy is the perfect example of someone who imbues his pieces with a story, which is why he has become so beloved.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Buying art is like buying a property’

’If you’re ever going to buy art, try to buy into the people who created their genre'

‘It’s not just about the piece. It’s also about the story’

‘Every pound saved is a pound made in a recession'

11 Nov 2020Finding Your Place in The World00:16:26

Woodbury House’s journey into the art world has been unconventional, in that Steven has never felt the need to conform. Sometimes the best journeys taken are the unexpected, the unorthodox, and the remarkable ones.

In this show, Steven reflects upon the journey so far, how Woodbury House has marked itself out as something truly unique in the world of art, and why it’s so valuable and empowering to focus on one thing, rather than spread our interests too broadly.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Becoming an expert in every single pursuit of art is almost impossible. It’s far better to focus on one thing at a time and follow the things you’re passionate about.
  • When you dedicate yourself to a single pursuit, your knowledge on that area will grow rapidly. That knowledge, used in the correct way, will intrinsically become more valuable.
  • As markets mature, you mature as a professional in your sector. That maturity can only come by concentrating your focus in on one thing at a time.
  • Focus will inevitably lead to dove-tailing into different areas. You will learn other, valuable insights through osmosis.

BEST MOMENTS

‘You might hear one thing that will change your life forever’

‘I’m certainly a student of life’

‘When you have knowledge, you have empowerment’

‘If you become empowered, other people will come towards you'

06 Oct 2020What's More Important? Marketing Or Sales?00:08:32

The eternal debate continues around which is more important - sale or marketing?

They both have their place in any business, but as Steven discusses today, it’s all a matter of timing when it comes to their importance.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Learning the art of sales is more important in the initial phases than marketing. You have to be able to chase leads and close them in order to build.
  • Goals and vision are crucial. If you don’t have a target, then you won’t know which clients to pursue, or which type of income will be supporting you.
  • Grit and determination are core elements for any sales team. Putting yourself out there, and living outside of your comfort zone, you build the resilience that will shield you from fear.

BEST MOMENTS

‘You’re going to be handed some gold, and you’re going to turn it into rubbish’

‘You need to have your goals and your vision intact’

‘If you’re going to kickstart your company, you need to have really determined people'

10 Aug 2021Street Art Connects Us - with Ben Eine00:41:58

Ben Eine is one of the most successful street artists in the world and is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of graffiti letterforms. Originally a graffiti writer, Eine started his career over 30 years ago, leaving his first tag all over London before developing his distinct typographic style.

Steven talks to Ben about the home of street art, and how it should be used as a tool to revitalise communities, how all street art is the art of "getting over", and why your passion should always be your driving force.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Street art has the power to enliven a place, and empower communities. It should be used as a way of revitalising a place that needs colour.
  • If you have passion, belief and self-motivation, then money and renown isn't that important in our quest to create.
  • The governing bodies who control society are doing a bad job of inspiring and caring for us all. It is up to us to inject positivity and beauty into the world.
  • Discipline gives us a sense of self-worth. Pursuits such as sport and art grant us ways to focus and connect with others, inspiring us to work harder on being the best versions of ourselves.

BEST MOMENTS

'I believe that street art should be in poorer communities - where they need an injection of colour'

'Graffiti and street art is about the art of getting over. It's about getting your name and message up'

'I had a passion and a belief'

'We inject colour and interest into boring grey walls'

20 Oct 2020Dreams Are Built on Sacrifices - with Gary O'Neil01:09:04

Straight from the new podcast studio at Woodbury House, Steven talks to special guest Gary O’Neil, former professional footballer, who played for the likes of Portsmouth, West Ham and Middlesborough, and who now acts as the Under-23’s assistant coach for Liverpool.

Gary talks about the importance of resilience, why we must always recognise sacrifice, and the life lessons that have not just steered him towards success, but which are now steering a new generation of players.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Dreams are built on sacrifices. We must always remember that things others have to give up, so that we can fulfil our potential and find our place in the world.
  • Strong relationships are the key to success. We all need support, emotional or otherwise, in order to be the best that we can be.
  • Social media and its effects can be positive, but the negative effects can sometimes be crushing. It is important to keep it at arms-length until resilience is developed.
  • A side of a player’s education that is often overlooked is the education of money management. Instilling a financial ethic into not just players, but anyone from a young age, is a vital component in their upbringing.
  • The life of a player comes in waves. We reach a point where the opportunities come to us, but at a certain point, we must recognise the need to seek them ourselves.

BEST MOMENTS

’To have solid relationships around you is so important’

‘I was never really starstruck by footballers’

’There are pitfalls to being successful’

‘I keep learning, and keep developing myself, so that I can improve other people'

27 Aug 2019Arts & Business: Interview with Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt, Founders of Unit London01:12:44

It’s really telling the stories of the artists in noble ways that the industry hasn’t done before.”

In this episode of The Steven Sully Podcast, Steven chats with Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt, Co-founders and gallerists at Unit London. Joe and Jonny are making names in the art industry. Their brand, Unit London, wants to highlight art appreciation, the importance of sharing artist’s stories, and not just looking at an artwork’s selling price.

For Joe and Jonny, they want every experience of gallery-goers to be as human as possible. As artist-entrepreneurs, they always see that they connect with other artists on a genuine level. They aren’t here just to find the best investment-grade art to showcase. Any emerging artist are welcomed to their platform.

Discover more about arts and business when you tune in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Joe and Jonny have been shaking things up in the art industry lately. They’re introducing a new way on how to manage galleries, museums, exhibitions, and installations so they can be enjoyed by both the artists and the viewers. In their business model, they prioritised more on giving the full experience to everyone, rather than on the sales.
  • For artists who wants their to works to get appreciated by more people and make sales also, Unit London is the right place as it gives importance to artistry. Joe and Jonny’s approach is to showcase the works depending on how the artist wants it, so in this way, people get drawn authentically to its artistic value.
  • They’ve carefully planned their pricing structure. Others would increase the prices if they see that there’s a high demand for the artworks of a certain artist. But Joe and Jonny are looking at their long-term goals, and following this kind of practice isn’t the best for their business.
  • When scouting for new artists, Joe and Jonny want to work with people who have same vision as them. It should be easier to collaborate if you found someone who’s on the same page as you.
  • Joe and Jonny’s advice for entrepreneurs is to always be persistent and consistent. If you keep doing what you need to be doing, you’ll eventually attain your goal. Yes, you’re gonna fail, but it’s part of life that leaves you with lessons and let you grow.

BEST MOMENTS

  • It’s all really about creating an environment that’s really welcoming, friendly, and somewhere you want to be.”
  • “We’ve always led with passion with art, not fundamentally with money.”
  • “It’s not just a sales-driven business; it’s about creating experience for people.”
  • “If you appreciate the life of an entrepreneur, it’s much easier to go through the weeks.”
  • “It was never about selling art; it was always about building a community.”

Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt are the founders of Unit London, an independent brand that’s trying to shake up the current art industry. As much as possible, they want art to be appreciated by not just the few, but for everyone-the masses. Their galleries don’t serve the investors, it serves the artists and the art enthusiasts.

From here, I established a foothold in the sales market promoting financial products and being a founder of an art agency that has a Soho based art studio.

In addition, I have invested into an urban fashion brand and into a wellness tech company, and my latest addition to the business portfolio is a property company that which creates HMO's in Medway, Kent. The diverse range of industries I find myself in has allowed me to create wealth that enables me to be my boss so I can pursue my dreams.

As a former boxer and avid sportsman, I find there are similarities between the running of businesses and competing. In my episodes, I will share some of my experiences to explore deeper these connections and how they may bring you success."

22 Nov 2024Mindset of a Champion: How Military Training Shapes Success in Business and Life00:33:54

Steven is joined by Farren Morgan, a former soldier turned successful entrepreneur and athlete. Farren shares his unique journey, detailing his late entry into the army at 27, the challenges he faced, and how his military experience shaped his mindset and career.

The discussion delves into the evolving culture of the military, the importance of physical fitness, and the impact of social media on personal branding and business growth. Farren also opens up about his upcoming challenge of completing a 1,000-mile trek with a weighted backpack to raise funds for veterans, emphasising the significance of giving back to the community

Key Takeaways

  • The mindset developed in sports, particularly boxing, can be applied to various aspects of life, including business, family, and social interactions.
  • Joining the army later in life (at 27) provided valuable lessons in discipline, physical fitness, and camaraderie, which have influenced personal and professional growth.
  • There is a concern about the dilution of physical fitness standards in the military, with an emphasis on the importance of being in shape for leadership roles.
  • Building a strong social media presence has allowed for the expansion of a coaching business, reaching clients globally and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

BEST MOMENTS

"I believe that the Army has given me a better mindset... through the hardship, through physical training and all through the camaraderie."

"I think a lot of people got into the military that shouldn't necessarily be there... I don't think they should be leading guys into any kind of scenario."

"When I think about the army, you think about that slogan, be the best... it doesn't matter whether you get shot at, you go out there and do your thing."

"A high percentage... well over 75% of everything that you see online, someone's taking some kind of performance enhancing drug."

04 Mar 2020My Next Fight00:27:42

In four days’ time, Steven steps back into the boxing ring to put his skills and training to the test once more.

It’s a time for reflection for Steven who takes this opportunity to look back on some of the lessons learned over the past six years, and in this week’s show, he looks back at some of the highs and lows, the preparations, the body-hacks, and the reasons why he’s chosen now as the time to get back into the sport he loves and respects.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Steven hates to lose. He is very competitive and loves to win. If he does suffer a loss, then it’s important to him that he analyses what went wrong and why so that he can fix it for next time.
  • One of the best methods of building stamina is to heel-sprint or run up a hill, which Steven likens to the sensation of being in a fight, as it builds endurance.
  • People say you shouldn’t spar too much before a fight so that you don’t get too punch-drunk. Sparring is the only thing that can really help you mimic a fight and help you train for it. Steven advises mixing up your opponents so as to build your skills.
  • Boxing makes you durable, and gives you qualities that can enhance your business life, your family life and your social life.
  • Road-running is like depositing money into a current account. The more you do it, the more cash you’ll have in that account. You’ll be running for many more miles than you ever thought possible, before you even know it.
  • The correct nutrition can see to it that you have more energy so that you can train harder and recover faster. It can also help to disperse any toxins and aid your digestion.
  • A great food-hack is soup! If you want something cheap, easy, nutritious, and which will help you to lose weight rapidly, try soups and cold-pressed juices!
  • Everyone needs a purpose. The event itself is a purpose, of course, but there’s always a deeper reason, a more heartfelt purpose, behind anything we do.
  • There are times when things get difficult. The challenges can seem insurmountable. Boxing has given Steven the resilience and the endurance to come out on the other side both physically and mentally.

BEST MOMENTS

  • ‘As you start winning fights, the competition only gets stronger’
  • ‘Anyone coming into it for the first time usually has a point to prove’
  • ‘I hate sparring amateurs! They’re like annoying flies you can’t get rid of’
  • ‘it gives you that winner’s mind-set for when life gets a little bit tough’
  • ‘Get up early. Be passionate. Be happy, never content’
  • ‘You only find out who you are when you bite down on that gum-shield and face those tough, tough times'

07 Apr 2020Richard Hambleton- The Recession-Proof Asset?00:44:43

The word is a turbulent sea of news, opinions and agendas right now. Everyone has a take on how the coronavirus and quarantine will affect world economies and the futures we’ve been building.

Steven isn’t here today to talk about conspiracies or doom-narratives. This week’s episode is a frank discussion about the value of art right now, the impact of what’s happening, and to reassure you that there are safe havens for investors in the world. You just need to know what to look for.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Money is never lost forever. It might disappear from one source, but that same money will end up in the hands of someone else.

  • More self-made millionaires and billionaires are created during recessions than at any other time. It’s your duty to yourself and those you love, to be the one on the frontlines looking for those opportunities.
  • Art is one of the safest and most bulletproof markets to be involved in, even at times of recession. And there’s no more secure division of the art world than contemporary art.
  • Investments are generally made by our emotions, but you need to make sure they’re backed up by facts and figures. The art of investment is a collaboration between the heart and the mind.

BEST MOMENTS

’There’s always opportunities to grow, learn, and most importantly, become a success’

’If one door closes, another one is about to open’

‘You need to feel confident not to look at things emotionally, but logically’

‘Recessions come and go. Markets peak and drop. It’s the job of the investor to find out where that money’s going'

ABOUT THE HOST

The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should focus on a number of key areas to be a well-rounded individual. Success should not be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships.

16 Oct 2018Why Invest in Watches00:17:36

Welcome back to another episode of The Steven Sulley Study. Today Steven explains why investing in watches is always a solid investment. If you’re looking to affiliate yourself with successful people, keep to a routine of champions and empower yourself to be a success, this episode is for you.

There are more benefits to watches than just telling the time.  Ist’ a badge of honour, an extension of yourself and your personality and people will view you as a success because of it. Owning and investing in watches will create you endless opportunities and allow your business to flourish.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Why Investing In Watches Is Important

  1. Watches tell the time - They fit the fundamental need of keeping to a routine and getting things done.
  2. Watches hold their prices and increase over time. Rolex, Philippe and AP typically grow in value over time
  3. Gratitude watches - There are days when life is a struggle a gratitude watch provides you with a little reminder that you are a success and you are empowered.
  4. Surround yourself with the right group of people and use your watch to create a common ground. This will give you instant rapport and instant recognition and opportunities will follow.
  • Buy watches that are limited edition and limited production and you are guaranteed to have an appreciating asset. My Rolex Daytona Stainless Steel - I purchased this in 2005 for £5000 today it's worth in excess of £12,000. Watches go up in value exponentially.
  • Buy cashflowing assets first such as property, HMO's or serviced accommodation units before treating yourself to a watch. Once you have a sustainable monthly income put that money into a luxury watch that will appreciate in value over time
  • The law of attraction only works when you surround yourself with the right people and write down your goals and as a result, gravitate towards the goals that you want to achieve.

BEST MOMENTS

“When I first got into sales and started affiliating myself with successful people, I noticed they all seem to speak, invest and collect watches”

“When I started making money I gravitated toward investing in watches and part of my financial and materialistic goals are owning some luxury watches”

"You don't know what you don't know"

"I run a regimented day, starting with the routine of a champion"

“There is an instant synergy and an instant connection when discussing watches”

"Your Net-worth will be determined by your Net-work"

26 Apr 2023Business Maestro Charlie Mullins On How He'd Fix The State of The Country01:06:28

Steven talks once more to Charlie Mullins OBE, the founder of Pimlico Plumbers, London’s largest independent plumbing company, about his life in business, the life-changing, nine figure exit he achieved when he sold the company, what matters more to him - the OBE status or the fortune he's built - when to be ruthless in business and what the future holds for one of Britain's most successful business minds.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Honours are incredible to receive, but they don't pay the bills. Always look out for the money before you go seeking awards. Money keeps you company throughout life.
  • It's fine to be sharp in business, but you don't have to be mean to people. Treat the world well and it'll treat you well in return.
  • Promoting yourself is vital. It’s no good offering the best service out there if no one knows you exist. There’s a reason why the most successful shops are on the high street. It’s all about recognition.
  • Work on retaining customers. It’s the stalwart customers who help businesses through tougher times. Word of mouth will follow, which will grow the business in itself.
  • The idea of providing a valuable service isn’t new. Charlie’s own viewpoint on this, though, is in the finesse. His employees are smart, courteous, punctual and always make sure the customer feels taken care of. It is this strategy that has led to his becoming so successful.
  • There's no denying that the current government has a tough job ahead. There doesn't seem to be any backbone or strength in politics these days. We need a return to honesty.

BEST MOMENTS

'My eye is always on the ball and looking for something new'

'The OBE is lovely but it doesn't pay the bills'

'I love a level playing field'

'Whoever gets in as Prime Minister has a really tough job'

15 Oct 2019Health On Ice – with Maria Ensabella of LondonCryo00:29:44

This time on the podcast, Steven talks to Maria Ensabella, the owner and founder of LondonCryo, a pioneering London centre, who aim to provide pain relief, sports recovery, slimming, toning, and other health benefits through cryotherapy.

Maria discusses her journey into this highly popular form of treatment, how it works, and her goals, beliefs, and vision for the future.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Tony Robbins and Floyd Mayweather are proponents of cryotherapy. It can reduce stress, help with inflammation and is generally used for sports therapy.

  • You need to believe in what you’re doing. You can have tough days, and it can take a while to engage with people, especially if you are in the business of a new and unfamiliar form of treatment. But belief will keep you going, and will eventually steer you towards success.

  • Culture is vital to the growth of a business. Happiness and friendliness will make you memorable, and will make clients feel at home and comfortable.

  • LondonCryo’s vision is to grow another eight locations within the next three to four years. Investment and partnership will be required.

  • As long as you’re open to advice and new experiences, the right people will come into your life. Listening to the wisdom and experiences of others help you to grow.

  • Cryotherapy works when cold air causes blood to rush to the surface of the body, bringing the oxygen with it, which starts the body’s recovery process. When you are subjected to these temperatures, it causes the blood vessels to close up. The brain then sends a message to the blood, which rushes to protect your internal organs.

  • The diet is more important than exercise, unless you’re an athlete. Sleep is also highly vital, and we should all be getting 7 - 8 hours of sleep per night.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I could joke that I love rain and grey clouds!’

‘Being able to tell a story is paramount’

’Being willing to learn is very important’

‘Anyone can be content, but you need to achieve more'

28 Sep 2021Capturing The Shadowman - with Oren Jacoby01:04:45

This week, Steven talks to renowned Academy-Award nominated filmmaker, Oren Jacoby, the director of the definitive study into the life of street artist, Richard Hambleton, 2017's 'Shadowman'.

Oren joins Steven for a very special conversation in which he discusses the vision behind each of his creations, how he has arrived at this point in his career, the future of film as a medium, and the artist behind the shadows in his ground-breaking documentary.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Documentary filmmaking is an incredibly difficult field to work in, as not only is funding not forthcoming, but once it has been found, the real work comes in the form of discovering the definitive truth behind a life and transforming it into a narrative.
  • The art of film is bound to change as new technologies and platforms evolve, but what's truly important is making sure that they can be seen by people.
  • As a filmmaker, we have the opportunity to mark our personal narrative voices out by fighting for the stories we believe in most.
  • Value in art evolves from the politics in the art world. There is far more to establishing a monetary power in art than simply creating work. There are many factors, such as marketing and agency to consider.

BEST MOMENTS

'It's exciting work and we love it, and we're always delving into someone else's world'

'We have to hope that people will appreciate what's great about being in a theatre'

'I you have a huge hit, then people come calling for you'

'You don't win every fight, but you keep fighting for the stories you believe in'
