02 Oct 2019How to Stay Mentally Strong Whatever Life Throws at You! – 08601:04:10

Today it feels that stress, anxiety and depression are reaching epidemic levels, and for many people who slip into that black hole, it can take years to scramble out and get life back on track...if they manage it at all. For public speakers there are many potential triggers for stress and anxiety… the actual act of speaking can be terrifying for some, then there’s the rejection to deal with, and perhaps one of the biggest ones we face…the old imposter syndrome. That’s why I decided to invite Linda Clarke on the show.

I have been working with Linda to develop her new workshop and I’ve been so impressed by her story, her knowledge and experience and the results she gets people. So, for me it was a no brainer to ask if she would come onto The Speaking Club to share her wisdom with you.

A Master Hypnotherapist, with many other qualifications to her name, Linda has been in practice since 2006. She was based in South Africa for most of that time, with a thriving business, even treating Nelson Mandela’s Granddaughter as part of a documentary at one point. But her life changed dramatically in 2017 and what would have sent most people over the edge, gave Linda the perfect opportunity to take her own medicine.

I am sure you will enjoy this show!

What we talk about:

  • What Hypnotherapy is and how it works.
  • How your thoughts can help or hinder your situation when you’re going through a difficult time/transition.
  • The top 3 things you can do to cope in a high-stress situation.
  • The two different ways of being mindful and how they can help you perform better.
  • Specific tips for managing anxiety and stress around public speaking.
  • The importance of building the right neural pathways.
  • Primal needs – what they are and why they matter.
  • Why your talk doesn’t need to be perfect to be effective.
  • Why you should speak to the audience you’ve got not the one you want.
  • The importance of trusting your instincts in business.

28 Oct 2021Storytelling. The Long and Short of It - 19400:16:38

There is no doubt that stories are the most powerful vehicle for getting your audience to buy in emotionally to your message. BUT you have a limited amount of time to get your story across before their attention starts to wander.

Even TV, movies or books that you have chosen to engage with, have a finite time to grab your attention, before you switch off, and in the world of speaking and marketing, that window of time is even smaller.

In this show, I’m going to be sharing the what and the why of tiny stories that pack a big punch, so that you can make sure you're not missing your opportunity to make your message land.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • The urban myth that started a tiny story trend.
  • Why you need to blend micro stories into your speaking and marketing toolbox.
  • How you can pull all triggers for attention in just a few words.
  • Examples of tiny stories.
  • The steps to creating a tiny story.
  • The difference between micro stories and snackable stories

And lots more!!

22 Mar 2019How Intentional Movement Can Power Up Your Public Speaking Part Two - 07000:15:14

In order to realise your full potential and impact as a speaker, it’s important that you understand and harness the power of your body language and movement in your communication with an audience.

Performers in every genre, can evoke emotion in their audience without uttering a single word. Whether it’s the arch of an eyebrow that makes the audience collapse in laughter, the arch of a body that communicates desire, or the arch of a conductor’s hand bringing an orchestra to a crescendo. As a speaker you can also use your body in harmony with your voice and words to change the state of your audience and move them to action.

In part two of this series I’ll be continuing to share how you can use your body and intentional movement to increase your impact.

Enjoy!

What this episode covers:

  • How you can choreograph your talk to direct an audience’s attention and emotion.
  • Why it’s critical to keep your energy consistent.
  • How to use proximity as a powerful tool.
  • Mirror neurons and why they are a friend to public speakers.
  • How you should setup your stage.

11 Jun 2020Speaking a Brighter Future into Existence with Michael Arterberry – 12201:03:15

Michael Arterberry took sanctuary in sports to distract from the fear and hardship he faced at home growing up. As an adult, he recognised that his ability to stay resilient, keep perspective and positive during the trials of his childhood was not something everyone facing the same challenges was able to do. That epiphany led to a life dedicated to helping others find their way through the challenges life throws at them to discover their place of peace.

Michael says “I can’t change your circumstances, but I can help change your perspective.” That’s what his talks and transformational coaching programs do and in this show he is sharing his journey, and some of the tips and techniques he uses with people to manage those difficult situations.

He also shares how he puts his talks together and some of his secret speaking tricks that inspire, lead, and encourage people to choose the right path for them.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • How his humble beginnings and difficult childhood shaped Michael and led to what he does today?
  • Why you need to ‘shake off the dirt’ in order to achieve success.
  • How Michael communicates with kids to create ‘aha’ moments that give them a fresh perspective and start.
  • Why teachers are also transformed by Michael’s work.
  • What made Michael switch into motivational speaking and how he made the transition into speaking to adult audiences?
  • How we need to shift from being the passenger to the driver of your car.
  • The impact of African American communities spreading out to more affluent white  communities and Michael’s role in bringing them together.
  • How Michael connects to himself and the audience to get great results from his speaking and how to do this.
  • The winning combination to be a successful speaker.
  • Why stories are such a critical tool in Michael’s speaking and teaching tool chest

21 Mar 2024License to Thrill… Your Audience - 28500:21:32

The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said:

“I just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know I’ve engaged them. But other times, I just can’t get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak.”

The truth is that grabbing your audience’s attention in the right way, (or ‘hooking’’ them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk.

The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and that’s because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it.

In this show, I’m going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

  • The messages you are communicating to your audience before you even start speaking.
  • The big mistakes a lot of speakers make with the start of their talk.
  • Why you should go for quantity over quality when you are looking for great ideas.
  • The questions you should ask yourself before you ‘settle’ for a talk title, open and close.
  • Why you should be provocative and what to do after.
  • If you want to be heard stay out of the ‘herd’
  • The way to make your talk unique.

And more!!

14 May 2020Is Your ‘Content Flow’ Causing Your Audience to Switch Off? – 11800:17:27

Content flow relates to the composition of your talk and how you get your audience from ‘a’ to ‘b’. This is relevant whether you’re doing a 15 second Tik Tok, three minute facebook live, blog or or a 45 minute keynote. You need to consider some often overlooked factors relating to ‘content flow’ that will affect the experience people have on their journey with you... whatever medium it’s on, or how long it may be.

Get it right and you may win a fan, but get it wrong and you may leave your audience bored, confused, and unlikely to bother engaging with you again.

In this show I’m going to be sharing those factors you need to pay attention to, so that your content keeps your audience focused, engaged and eager to take the next steps with you.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • My Gambian nightmare and why it matters to your audience.
  • The starting point for any speaking content.
  • Why speakers can learn a lot from tattoo artists.
  • The key ‘content flow’ ingredients for a great talk.
  • What a segue is and why it matters.
  • The secrets to good segues.
  • Why stories and gaps are your friend for keeping your audience focused.
  • Get the audience committed.

18 Mar 2022Why You Should Always Lead with Emotion in Your Speaking and How to Do it - 21400:15:10

It’s no secret that telling stories is the single most powerful tool you can have in your speaking and marketing. But not all stories are created equal.  There are some that are simply a series of events pulled together into a narrative arc that certainly meet the definition of a ‘story’.

And then, there are the others …

… the stories that get into your head and your heart and cause you to feel something… maybe anger, hope or laughter.

And that makes you want to share them, and then that story becomes your story.

So, what is it that sets these two types of stories apart?

Emotion.

Emotional stories win attention, keep your audience GLUED, and take  them on a journey, but the big question is how do you make a story emotional?

That’s what you’ll discover in this episode!

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

The tools of emotion

Where you should use them

How to turn emotion into a burning platform for action

Why you should lead with emotion

How you can create emotion even when the subject matter seems very dry.

And lots more!!

04 Aug 2022The Diamond Dozen for Developing Your Speaking Skills - 23400:26:15

To be a great public speaker you need substance and style. I’ve seen many speakers who are very showy, but their content completely misses the mark, and I’ve seen speakers with a great message to share, but who fail to communicate it in a way that engages their audience.

I want anyone I work with, through my programmes and this podcast to have compelling content AND charisma as a speaker. I want you to have a talk that you’re excited to share and the confidence in your own speaking skills that means you step ‘on stage’ with power.

In this show, I want to focus on the second half of the speaking equation, supporting you with the delivery of your message. In my opinion there are four core speaking skills, mindset, storytelling, performance and humour, and that’s why I’m sharing a dozen episodes that really zero in on helping you develop these, so that you can get ready to rock after the summer break.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

  • The four core speaking skills you need to develop
  • Tips to help you with managing your mindset
  • Ways to develop your storytelling
  • Insight around using your voice.
  • How to power up your performance
  • Tips for using humour in your talks.

And more!!

27 Sep 2024Why USPs Don’t Work and What Speakers Should Focus on Instead with Chantal Cornelius - 29901:15:06

Do you feel resistance when you hear the word marketing?

So many people do.

They have hang ups and beliefs about marketing and it can get in the way of them being able to achieve success in their business and as a speaker.

I get it though, marketing can feel complicated, overwhelming and confusing.

But it doesn’t have to feel that way.

What if it could feel clear, and light and simple?

Because marketing is about showing your audience the problem you can solve for them, and  making sure you stay front of mind, for when they decide to get that problem solved.

That’s what I’m hoping you get a sense of today, from my straight talking guest Chantal Cornelius.

Chantal has been helping service businesses attract new clients since 2000.

She also speaks to audiences around the world, showing them how to understand the emotional buying decisions made by their clients and how that translates into a stand out strategy for them.

Chantal also happens to be National President of the Professional Speaking Association, (at the time of this episode), so not only does she have golden nuggets to share about how to market yourself, but she has some speaking tips too!

What you’ll discover:

  • How 7 year old Chantal started her on her quest to stand out.
  • Why Chantal believes that USPs don’t work.
  • How Chantal discovered the marketing strategy that works for her audience.
  • What changes she has made to her marketing as a result.
  • The test results for my marketing strategy revealed Iive.
  • Ideas for effectively measuring your marketing.
  • The three most important things that speakers need to get right with their marketing.
  • How Chantal started speaking and ended up becoming the National President of the Professional Speaking Association.
  • The three things that make a speaker memorable in Chantal’s experience.

14 Apr 2022How You Can Share Your Passion and Purpose on the Page with AnnMarie Wyncoll - 21801:15:32
Have you got a story to tell?

Do you have a big message to share?

Perhaps you should consider writing a book.

Just like a great talk, a book is a fantastic way to bring that message or story alive for people and in a way that you can scale… as long as it’s done in the right way.

But there are many potential traps waiting to slow you down, or stop you from getting the book finished and out into the world, that’s where this show can help.

My guest AnnMarie Wyncoll is an author and founder of Begin a Book. Her desire to become an author was born when she had an epiphany about her life with a toilet brush in her hand.

Unfortunately, her journey was fraught with obstacles to overcome, but she didn’t give up and eventually she held her first book in her hands.

Today, through her company Begin a Book, she makes the book creation process stress free and easy for other aspiring authors.

In this show, she will be sharing how to avoid the pitfalls of publishing and she’ll also be giving you some brilliant advice to make sure your book has the best chance of reaching the people who need to read it.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • What a toilet brush moment is and what caused AnnMarie to have hers.
  • What made her switch from being a part-time author to launching a book company.
  • The people who AnnMarie thinks shouldn’t write a book.
  • The three big traps people can fall into on the book creation journey.
  • The three things AnnMarie had wished she’d known before she wrote and published her first book.
  • What’s better - self-publishing or working with a publishing company.
  • How you should tackle talking about real people.
  • How you should handle quotes in books.
  • The best ways to go about promoting your book once you have it.
  • How AnnMarie uses speaking in her business.

If people believe that you can deliver what they want and need, they will book you to speak, or buy your products or services. But in showing them that you can deliver there's a fine line between confident and cocky, and if you cross that line, it can push people away… and you don’t want that.

So … how do you show authority without shoving it in people’s faces?

Well that’s what I’m going to talk about today. Here’s what this show will cover:

  • A definition of authority in this context

  • The five ingredients for building authority authentically

Still one of the most prolific tools around, Powerpoint can literally make or break your presentation, depending on how you use it. That’s why I wanted to get Philippa Leguen de Lacroix on the show.

She started life employed as a graphic designer, and was increasingly tasked with creating powerpoint slides for the different organisations she worked for. That company has gone from strength to strength, pushing the boundaries of powerpoint to deliver jaw dropping presentations that continue to delight audiences and win new clients.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • What made Philippa focus on powerpoint.

  • What design linked with value means and why it matters.
  • What is more important, the talk content and delivery, or the slides.
  • Why Philippa believes we should still consider powerpoint over other slide software options.
  • Three great tips for good slide design and creation.

If you’ve been considering doing a webinar, but you don’t know where to start, then this show is for you.

Enjoy!

What I’m going to cover:

  • The benefits of hosting webinars and workshops
  • The essential ingredients
  • How you should structure your webinar for success
  • Presentation considerations for webinars

If you’re an expert that wants to make a difference, you’ll probably already know that to inspire change, to grow your audience and your income, you have to become someone who can influence the narrative, someone who is a ‘Thought Leader’.

Unfortunately, most of the experts, authors and entrepreneurs that set out on the journey to thought leadership make the same costly mistake.

In this show, I’m sharing what that is and the things that set some of the biggest thought leaders and changemakers on their path to success.

If you want to have more impact and stand out from the crowd then this episode is spot on for you!

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • What you’ll have to become to inspire change and grow your audience
  • The big mistake made by many aspiring ‘influencers’.
  • Four things Brene Brown, Simon Sinek and Captain America have in common.
  • What a signature talk is.
  • The ingredients of an effective signature talk.
  • How I discovered the powerful ingredients of the signature talk
  • Some big signature talks being deconstructed so that you can see how and why they work.
  • Common limiting beliefs and misconceptions that maybe holding you back from realising your potential as a speaker and influencer.

01 Mar 2018My 8 Hacks for Mental Resilience and Getting What You Want - 02400:31:01

I’ve spent years and years fascinated with the impact of how we think on how we behave. I’ve read and researched the gurus on resilience, I’ve spent time and money on training and courses, and consciously, or unconsciously, I’ve cherry picked the things that I think work best for keeping me mentally tough and on track to achieve my goals.

In this episode I’m sharing my eight hacks for staying resilient in a world where it’s harder than ever not to compare, where noise and distractions are invading our space almost 24/7, and where our minds and the way we think make the difference between whether we succeed, or we fail.

What you’ll learn

  • Why we should think like a kid for business success.
  • How visual cues can keep us on track
  • Where our mind needs to be to increase productivity, creativity and the deep work that takes us forward.
  • A framework for challenging our thoughts and beliefs so that we can be happier and get unstuck.
  • The tactic for managing hot buttons, the comparison trap and being outside our comfort zone
  • The hack for improving your golf score and moving forward in life
  • Why just sharing your goals publicly is not enough to motivate you to take action.
  • How thinking about death can supercharge our life

17 Jul 2024Breaking the Silence with Don Ryan - 29300:59:57

Please be aware that this episode does discuss the topics of death and suicide.

Each of us has a story to tell, but for many people no reason compelling enough emerges for us to embark on the journey to sharing that story with others.

But for some people, there comes a time where something happens and it ignites a burning desire to share their story, so that others can learn what we’ve discovered or  avoid the pain that we’ve encountered.

That is what happened to Don Ryan.

He was a regular guy with a job as a therapist, and a family, who had lost some people he loved.

But when a third person he loved decided to die by suicide, Don knew, on all sorts of levels of his being, that he needed to share his story to help other people like him and contribute towards a big change.

That’s when he wrote a book called, ‘The Secret Struggle: Surviving the Suicide of a Loved One’, where he pairs his personal experience of losing three members of his family with the professional insights gained across three decades of work in the social services field.

After writing the book, Don knew he wanted to turn the book into a talk, both to share his message more widely, and as a means by which people could discover his book.

In this show we will talk about his journey and how he tackled creating an engaging and entertaining talk for this challenging topic.

What you’ll discover:

  • Don’s own experience of losing someone to suicide and how it has impacted his life.
  • Where his personal and professional experience intersect.
  • How Don approached sharing his story and the challenges he encountered.
  • How the current social conditioning around this topic affects the support that people get.
  • Why the figures we have for numbers of suicides don’t reflect the real situation.
  • The most important thing that Don believes needs to happen to start to turn the tide around this issue.
  • The challenges Don faced in turning the book into a talk.
  • How to make sure the audience gets relief when you are speaking about challenging topics.

“I’ve been approached to speak at an event, but they have no budget for speaker fees, should I do it?” … is a question I get asked a lot.

So, I say … “Firstly, that’s not a question I can answer for you … but here’s some ideas for how you can assess the value of an opportunity for you and your message, and how you can make low fee or free gigs pay.”

And those ideas are what I want to share with you today.

24 Feb 2022Best of: Universal Themes & Story Plots for Powerful Public Speaking & Marketing Content - 21100:30:12
Chances are all the films you love, all the books you devour, have pulled you in because you can relate not only to the character and their journey, but to the underlying messages that apply universally to all human beings.

There are recurring symbols and motifs weaved into the fabric of stories from ‘The Three Little Pigs’ to ‘Harry Potter’, that signal, repeat and reinforce the themes that writers from Shakespeare to Quentin Tarantino use to draw us in and deliver a moral takeaway.

Speakers and copy writers can also use universal themes and the tools of symbols and motifs in stories and more widely in their content to hook the audience, keep them engaged and get them to remember the core message and action points.

In this ‘best of’ show re-run, I’m going to share what I know about universal themes and story plots, and some examples of how you can use them practically in your public speaking and marketing content.

Enjoy!

What this episode covers:

  • What universal themes and basic story plots are
  • Why they are important in stories, speaking, and marketing copy
  • The different types of universal themes
  •  How symbols and motifs reinforce universal themes and what they are
  • The options for story plots
  •  How you might use them in your speaking and in business.

11 Oct 2018Changing the World One Talk at a Time with Devin Thorpe – 05600:51:58

We all think we set big goals… but in this episode I got a little perspective on what big goals really are! Devin Thorpe spent many years in a corporate career within the finance function, but he never forgot a promise he made to himself at the age of 11. When he lost the job of his dreams that promise led him to re-evaluate his life purpose and set him on the path to what he does today.

Devin has spoken at the UN and all over the world sharing his mission and training companies on crowd funding and corporate social responsibility. He is also a regular writer for Forbes magazine and a podcast host. In this episode he shares how he got into paid speaking, how it enables him to fulfil his mission and what he does to put his talks together. We also consider how Devin uses humour in his writing and speaking to increase the impact of his message.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

  • How losing something you care about can be a catalyst for a bigger life.
  • Why it’s important to be conscious of our bias in life.
  • How Corporate Social Responsibility can increase profitability.
  • Why it’s good to be polarising to increase the impact of your message and reach the right people.
  • How Devin transitioned from Finance to paid speaking.
  • Devin’s process for creating his talks.
  • Why it’s important to watch yourself back as a speaker to improve your craft.
  • How you can tell if you’re a good speaker.
  • Why you should always make it easy for people to give you money.

28 Jan 2021The Seven Sins of Storytelling - 15500:21:13

Whether it’s books, film, television, newspapers, or the internet, it is true that those who tell the stories have enormous power to influence.

I believe in today’s digital world great stories are also the secret to standing out, making people care and successfully selling online

As a comedian, writer, speaker and performer… (not to mention years as an HR professional relying on influence over power)...stories have been the golden thread running through my life.

Over the past thirty plus years, I’ve researched, studied, practiced, written and performed stories, and I’ve had successes alongside failures. Each experience has taught me something valuable, (including there is always more to learn), and I wanted to share some of those lessons with you.

So, to help you wield this magical communication tool more powerfully, here are my seven storytelling sins for you to avoid!

What you’ll discover:

  • The start counts
  • Opening up is the way to connection
  • Why you need to look at things from the other side of the fence
  • Structure for success
  • The villain less void
  • Why you should share the stakes
  • Without a journey there’s no real story

Enjoy!

04 Mar 2021Can You Make Boring Subjects Sexy? - 16000:17:45

Let’s face it… on the surface some topics look dryer than the Sahara Desert… and a lot of people will get blocked from sharing their message because they struggle to see how they can make it interesting.

But I don’t believe there’s any subject that you can’t make engaging for an audience.

So, if you’ve dreaded your turn to pitch at a networking meeting, or you’ve said “no” to speaking opportunities, or you’ve stopped yourself from doing a podcast, video or webinar because you think your subject is boring, then this is for you.

In this episode, I’m going to show you that anything can be made sexy, and how to do it.

What you’ll discover:

  • Why there are no boring subjects
  • How you can make ordinary extraordinary
  • The three laws involved in making a message go viral and how they apply to your speaking

02 Aug 2018Managing Your Mind with Brooke Hender – 04601:07:44

Brooke Hender has had quite a journey, from project manager to actor to therapist. Although he found he had patterns of behavior that were negatively impacting his ability to live a happy and fulfilled life, he initially resisted getting help. He felt that this was just the way things were. Eventually, he gave therapy a chance but was amused when his own therapist suggested he would make a good therapist himself. Even though he dismissed the notion and fought against it for some time, after working on himself and transforming his life, he felt drawn to helping others get the same results and trained to become the Cognitive Hypnotherapist he is today.

In this show Brooke and I explore some of the thinking and behaviours that hold us back from achieving the success we want, in life, in speaking and in business. We cover off phobias, anxiety and the limiting beliefs that live in the shadows of our mind. There are some great strategies and tips for identifying and managing the thoughts that might be holding us back without us even being aware of them. If you know you’re not fully realizing your potential, then this show might help you to start removing the blocks that are in your way.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn

  • Strategies for managing anxiety around public speaking and performance.
  • Why it’s important to be visible and add value.
  • Tips for managing imposter syndrome.
  • How to keep a healthy separation between personal and professional success
  • Why presenting and performing is an essential part of business today
  • How to discover the things in your subconscious that might be holding you back.
  • The impact of the assumptions we make as human beings.
  • What cognitive hypnotherapy is and how it works.
  • Two great questions to help develop your self-awareness.
  • How limiting beliefs work and how they impact our lives.
  • Why “it’s just the way I am” doesn’t have to be true.

21 Jun 2018The Secrets to Filling Your Events & Workshops with QJ – 04001:04:18

QJ, (yes that is his name…I asked him), started life as a musician, although classically trained, his dream was to become a rock star. Through following this dream, he discovered a new passion…putting on and filling events that entertain and inspire. It turns out he was pretty good at it too…from the first gig he put on at his school, to the 1000 plus seater events he was later to stage, to the workshops he runs today.

Over the years QJ has been fine tuning what works and what doesn’t, and now he shares this knowledge to help others successfully run their own events. QJ teaches speakers and coaches how to attract, (he calls it ‘magnetize’) your audience so that your events are full, and then how to mesmerize them with the event itself, so that they want to continue working with you.

I tried my best to make the most of having QJ on The Speaking Club and picked his brains on all aspects of putting on an event to maximize the value for you…and boy did we cover a lot of ground!

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn

  • The psychology behind filling an event and why you need to create a buzz.
  • What sort of lead time you should have.
  • Why you should start from the perspective that no-one knows you.
  • How you can overcome the challenges of filling events today.
  • What an ‘egoic’ label is and why you should use it.
  • Why the message in the film, ‘The Field of Dreams’ was wrong!
  • Why just getting a few people on your first workshop isn’t a disaster and how you can use this to springboard to success.
  • What you need to know about workshop titles and why they matter.
  • The reason why you need to treat your workshop as a store and have other products to sell.
  • The difference between webinars and live events, and the myth about webinar pricing.
  • Why Facebook ads aren’t always the right answer for marketing your events.
  • The right way to become an in-demand speaker.
  • Why taster sessions are an exceptional marketing opportunity.
  • How you can mesmerize your audience with your event.
  • How to choose the right price for your workshop.
  • What your offer should contain to make people book.
  • Why you should follow up.

05 Sep 2024Unlocking the Cheat Code to Better Health and Performance with Margie Chavasse - 29600:59:08

Imagine the scenario, you’ve turned up to a speaking gig, or important presentation and your stomach is playing up, or you’re feeling foggy, and it’s not because you had a heavy night out. It’s just that it happens, and often at the most inconvenient times, and you don’t know why, and your Doctor hasn’t been able to tell you either.

So instead of feeling energised and ready to wow your audience, you’re feeling uncomfortable, maybe even embarrassed if your stomach has swelled up, and worried about delivering a sub par performance as a result.

I’ve had some stuff like that happen to me in the past, and I hated not feeling on top of my game. I also couldn’t get a solution, until a friend referred me to Margie Chavasse.

Margie is a holistic health practitioner using kinesiology, and she helps people overcome health issues that no-one else takes seriously.

She’s here today to share a different view on health, and some tips for staying healthy that might be a gamechanger for you and your performance.

What you’ll discover:

  • Why Margie made the switch from Finance Director to Alternative Health Practitioner
  • The signals your body is sending that most people ignore.
  • How the minor health niggles you’re ignoring could be impacting your success and quality of life.
  • Why conventional medicine doesn’t always have the answers.
  • Why the aches and pains of old age are a myth.
  • How your gut affects your head and brain fog.
  • The three most important things people can do to maintain their health and performance.

14 Jul 2022The Important Distinction That Will Set You Free and Increase Your Impact - 23100:16:58

Most of us human beings are weird. We make these declarations about what we want, then when it comes to taking the steps necessary to make that happen, we do everything we can to avoid them. And the longer we do that, the bigger the task seems to be and the more we beat ourselves up for not doing it.

If you have behaved the same way, or you’re stuck at the moment, then take solace from the fact that you aren’t alone. All of us do it, and more often than not for the same reason.

In fact this situation came up recently in a coaching session with one of my Speaking Club Live members, Donna Ferenth, who has kindly agreed to let me share our discussion with you.

Donna is the owner of a multiple taste award winning artisan tea company called Unravel Tea, based in the highlands of Scotland. She first came into my world through my Snackable Story Challenge and has carried on working with me on her talks and content over the past couple of years in The Speaking Club.

Following our session Donna took action and I hope that listening in on our discussion may help to get you unstuck too.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

  • What’s getting in the way of Donna taking action
  • The important distinction I discovered around the age of 40.
  • Who Arnold and Betty are and where they get their power from.
  • How you can manage your version of Arnold and Betty.
  • Why you can be sorted in one aspect of your life but issues can resurface in business.
  • The double-edged sword of procrastination.
  • What the most successful people do in relation to completing tasks that move their business forward.

And more!!

22 Jul 2021Tips for Remembering Your Talk - 18000:20:43

In my experience, the impact of the fear of forgetting what you want to say manifests itself in three big ways:

First there are the group of people who put off, or give up on their dream of speaking and sharing their message… and this can lead to negative self-talk, low self-worth, and the anger and frustration of comparisonitis.

Then there are the people who compensate for this fear of forgetting by having their talk as text on their slides, or having a full script that they read from. This will likely sabotage their success because the audience will become bored and disengaged.

The third group is the ‘wing it’ brigade. They’re also compensating for the fear, but they do it by not preparing properly. Very few people will do a good talk here, and it’s more likely their message will be rambling, and maybe the audience will be paying attention, but only in the way that people do when a car crash is happening.

In this show, you’ll hear me working with one of my TSC Live members who wanted to get some tips for remembering her talk. If you would also like to improve your recall and content confidence, then you’ll find this useful too.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • How your memory is better than you think it is.
  • How to break down a talk so that it’s easy to remember.
  • Why you can’t inject personality without content familiarity.
  • The power of letting go.
  • Why you need to separate your ‘creator’ and ‘critic’ sides.
  • Why your introduction should not be the first thing you do.
  • How powerful metaphors can be mental signposts for you.
  • What to be mindful of using autocue.
  • Why the high level structure of your talk is the most important thing to commit to memory.
  • There is no magic wand to replace rehearsal and practice.

That’s why I decided to put this episode together. I want to help you avoid the pitfalls and become an AWESOME podcast guest so that you can get get your message out there further and faster

21 Dec 2023[Quick Tip] Lead with the Problem - 27800:12:03

I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and it’s a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. This mistake can result in people not paying attention to you, lost business opportunities, and normally leads to frustration and the question, “I just don’t understand what I’m doing wrong!”

What they are doing wrong is not leading with the problem.

That’s why in this episode I’m sharing:

  • What leading with the problem means.
  • Where you should be doing it.
  • Why you are likely losing people’s attention.
  • The simple exercise you can do to avoid the LinkedIn advert issue.
  • The important check you need to make about where your audience is.
  • Examples to illustrate.

Enjoy!

02 Jun 2022Leveraging the Power of Individuality and Personality in Business with Gavin Howarth - 22501:07:40
I reached out to invite Gavin Howarth to be a guest on the podcast for a number of reasons.

Firstly, he writes some of the most engaging and authentic posts I’ve seen on LinkedIN that get a lot of traction

Secondly, one of his posts made reference to an experience he had whilst waiting to do a talk recently, and I knew that this would be useful to you.

Thirdly, he is a brilliant leader and has a powerful vision for his company and his team that I am sure will be an inspiration to you.

So … who is he?

Well Gavin is the Managing Director of Howarths, and his company helps thousands of other businesses manage one of the most challenging aspects of navigating growth - taking on and managing people.

Howarths advises companies on HR, Employment law, Health & Safety, and getting the best out of a team, and their client retention rate is incredibly high.

In this show we cover what it takes to be a great leader and create a high performance culture underpinned by people who love to come to work.

But we of course also look at how Gavin has embraced authentic storytelling in his talks and linkedIn posts to grow a big following and attract more clients.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • The key events that led Gavin to what he does today.
  • Gavin’s view on the three things that are most critical for sustainable success.
  • Why Gavin gets reminded he is going to die 5 times a day.
  • How Howarths develop and encourage personality and individuality at work and why it’s important to the business.
  • The qualities of a great leader.
  • Why Gavin hates the term ‘soft skills’.
  • What happened when Gavin did a talk in a room full of business power houses.
  • How Gavin managed his thinking whilst waiting to go on stage.
  • The process Gavin uses to create his LinkedIn content.
  • The mantra that underpins Howarth’s business success.

07 Mar 2025Struggling with Speaking Nerves? Turn Anxiety into Confidence with Heather Lillico - 31501:01:43

My guest today is Heather Lillico. I was so inspired by an article I read from Heather on the Tiny Buddha website, where she outed herself as a nutritionist who out of the limelight was actually struggling with an eating disorder, that I was curious to find out more.

What I discovered is that her journey of managing and mastering anxiety is not only inspiring, but could really help those of you who are struggling to manage anxiety around speaking.

I know so many speakers and aspiring speakers struggle with this and it can really sabotage results, or worse get in the way of you getting started in the first place.

Heather is a Holistic Nutritionist, Yoga & Meditation Teacher, and Anxiety Warrior. She teaches anxious, people-pleasing perfectionists how to step into a more confident version of themselves with a natural & holistic approach.

She is the creator of the anxiety support app, Cultivating Calm, and believes we can all make mental space for what really matters.

Heather’s been through the trenches and come out stronger, and in this episode, she’s sharing the real, practical tools you need to stop letting fear run the show.

We dive into:

  • Why anxiety is more than just a feeling—and what it’s really trying to tell you
  • The surprising link between what you eat and how confident you feel on stage
  • A simple mindset shift that can turn anxiety into excitement
  • A powerful technique to calm those pre-stage jitters in seconds
  • The biggest mistake speakers make that actually fuels their fear (and what to do instead)
  • Why waiting for ‘confidence’ before you act is a losing game

Enjoy!

21 Apr 2022Tips for Creating a Talk and Using Speaking to Get More Book Sales - 21900:21:15
If you listened to episode 218 of the show you will have heard me talking to AnnMarie Wyncoll, who helps people write and publish their books.

But one thing that AnnMarie was very clear on was that once the book is written whether you’re with a publishing company or self-publishing - the marketing and promotion of that book pretty much rests with you.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that speaking is one of the most effective ways to build an audience and make more book sales.

But you don’t often get specific advice about what to put in the talk and how to adapt it for the multiple speaking mediums that you can use to get your message out there.

That’s where this episode comes in.

Enjoy!

What you’ll learn:

  • Why you need to spend time creating a talk about your book
  • The ingredients that need to be in the talk about your book
  • Ideas for creating your book promotion campaign
  • How you can adapt that talk for different platforms
  • Tips for making the pitch to talk

And more!!

10 Dec 2020Your Internal GPS to Success - 14800:23:52

Even though I coach people on speaking and marketing, inevitably I always end up working as much on mindset as I do on developing skills and strategy.

That’s because, in my experience as a coach, and from my own journey, the thing that trips us up most as an entrepreneur are our thoughts and beliefs.

It doesn’t matter how many skills you’ve got, your mindset can be your biggest saboteur - showing up as things like impostor syndrome, procrastination, comparisonitis, shiny penny syndrome or as in my own case..all of them!

The trouble is that often we aren’t aware of why we’re stuck or struggling to do the things that we know will move us closer to realizing our potential and achieving our goals and dreams...and even if we are, sometimes we don’t register at a conscious level, that we’re thinking unhelpful thoughts.

That is why we need to use another compass to guide us, and what this episode is all about.

What you’ll discover:

  • The internal GPS that we need to pay attention to.
  • What we should do when we’re off track.
  • Three powerful processes to get you back on the path to happiness and success.

Enjoy!

27 Dec 2019Two Must Have Skills for Powerful Public Speaking – 09800:24:05

Whether you’re a storyteller, salesperson, marketer, leader, entrepreneur, coach, consultant or public speaker in order to be successful you have to be an effective communicator. You have to find a way to get your audience to pay attention and persuade them to act. Whether that action is changing their perspective, buying into an idea or project, or purchasing your product or service.

To grab attention and persuade people to act, you need to understand what they want, what they don’t want, and what matters enough to move them into action. To gain this knowledge there are two skills we need to master, and in this episode, I’ll be sharing what they are and what could stop you or get in your way of leveraging their power in your communication.

Enjoy!

What we’re going to cover:

  • The two critical skills every effective communicator needs to master
  • Why these skills are important
  • The human psychology traps that sabotage our success
  • What the ‘Backfire effect’ is and how we can combat it.
  • A trick for managing ‘haters’
  • How to ‘ask’ effectively
  • The ‘bad’ advice given about listening

20 Jul 2022How to Beat Stage Fright with Elisa De Napoli - 23200:57:49

Many people suffer from performance anxiety and it can get in your way if you want to speak to grow your business - but stage fright can have a whole other level of impact if your business is performing.

She is an artist coach, hypnotherapist, and multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. Under the stage name Elyssa Vulpes she has produced 12 albums, with a focus on inner transformation through sometimes dark and atmospheric sometimes comedic storytelling.

She has been featured on radio, podcasts, blogs, and online magazines and today she is a guest on The Speaking Club.

22 Feb 2024Making Your Brand Uniquely You with Becky Benfield-Humberstone - 28300:57:46

Not too long ago I heard one of the gurus in my space say that one of the big factors in his success is that when everyone else ‘zigs’, he ‘zags’. You can see ‘zigging’ going on all around you, suddenly everyone wants to be a neurodiversity expert, or an AI expert, because that’s what’s hot, because they are chasing the trend.

But what if you don’t do that? What if you go your own way, and stay true to who you are and who you want to help?

That is the path that Becky Benfield-Humberstone has chosen right from the get go. A born entrepreneur, Becky left school at 16 to start her own super niched business, Utterly Horses, which became the largest model horse stockist (yes, it’s a thing) in Europe, with a product range of over 2,500 items that retailed to a customer base of over 50,000 people and corporate clients. After successfully exiting that business in 2018, Becky wanted a new challenge.

That’s when she created Brand Artisan, and in that business she has been helping business owners bring their visions to life, stand out, and exponentially grow their businesses. She is joining me here to talk about all things branding, storytelling and marketing, and I know you are going to pick up some golden nuggets from her.

What you’ll discover:

  • How Becky started an international business at 16.
  • The problem Becky solves today.
  • The difference between brand strategy and marketing strategy.
  • Why keynote speakers need a brand.
  • The big branding you might be making in business.
  • Where stories fit into the work Becky does.
  • Why Becky bucks the trend and only works with one client at a time.
  • Where speaking fits in.
  • Why Becky created the Founders project and how you can get involved.

23 Nov 2023Dare to be Different with Kyla Skinner - 27500:53:29

How often, when it comes to writing in your business, has the blank page beaten you?

I’ve seen so many people get stopped, or never share what they have written because they don’t think it’s good enough, or they are worried about being judged.

Just like when you speak, in your business writing too, you get an amazing confidence boost from knowing that your message is good, that your content will make you stand out and connect with your target audience.

When that happens you’re excited to put yourself out there.

So how do you shift from stuck to successful?

How do you go from getting underwhelming results with your business writing, to your audience saying … “this person gets me and my problem, I think I need to work with them”?

That’s where this show comes in.

My guest today is Kyla Skinner, copywriter and business writing mentor.

She helps business owners harness the power of personality to better connect with their audience, stand out in today’s increasingly noisy market and attract new clients – so they can grow their business, not hold it back.

As a fully accredited introvert, Kyla had herself felt shy, nervous and reluctant about showing her own personality.

But that changed when she discovered the huge impact it made on growing her fledgling freelance business.

Now, she’s an experienced (and award-winning) strategic copywriter, who’s built her copywriting and brand language business, The Jarrah Consultancy, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals. Over the past 20 years, Kyla has helped to position and promote hundreds of brands, including many big name, global market leaders.

Today, she also encourages coaches, consultants and small business owners to tap into all this insight and expertise via her dedicated membership community, Copy Café.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • How Kyla became a copywriter and why personality matters to her.
  • The problem with generic writing and using tools like chat GPT.
  • What it means to ‘show’ your personality in your writing and the difference it makes to your message.
  • Why small business owners struggle to connect with their audience in their copy.
  • The three words that Kyla wrote for a Subaru ad that tells a big story.
  • How to approach ‘daring to be different’ if you are more introverted.
  • The difference between bland business writing versus writing with personality.
  • The gap that Kyla found small business owners falling into, and how she filled it.
  • Examples of results business owners have got by stepping out of their comfort zone.
  • Three tips for how to get more personality into your writing in a way that feels natural and not forced.
  • The surprising differences Kyla experienced as a copywriter creating her own signature talk.
  • How speaking has been working for Kyla and her business

31 May 2018Universal Themes & Story Plots for Powerful Public Speaking & Marketing Content - 03700:25:10

Speakers and copy writers can also use universal themes and the tools of symbols and motifs in stories and more widely in their content to hook the audience, keep them engaged and get them to remember the kernel message and action points. In this show, I’m going to share what I know about universal themes and story plots, and some examples of how you can use them practically in your public speaking and marketing content.

What you’ll learn:

  • What universal themes and basic story plots are
  • Why they are important in stories, speaking, and marketing copy
  • The different types of universal themes
  • How symbols and motifs reinforce universal themes and what they are
  • The options for story plots
  • How you might use them in your speaking and in business.

19 Aug 2021How to Harness the Power of Subconscious Communication with Paul Ross - 18400:47:49

If you can get your audience to believe what you believe then there is a strong chance that they’ll buy into your idea, product, service or movement.

There is an art and a science to achieving this and a big part of this relates to the language you use with your audience. That’s why I’ve invited language expert Paul Ross onto the show.

Paul is on a mission to teach entrepreneurs and sales people how to powerfully increase their results through the power of subconscious communication.

He has spent 30 years helping people fall in love with the power of language to influence, persuade, sell, and turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones.

  • What pattern interrupts are and when to use them.
  • Advice for tackling objections without being pushy or salesy.
  • Why it’s not enough to get your audience to know, like and trust you.
  • How Paul puts his talks together.
  • The three things you need to believe to be good as a speaker.
  • Audience connection and getting the balance right between content, stories and humour.

12 Sep 2019The 4 Steps to Framework Success in Your Public Speaking - 08300:23:12

Last week I was in Boise, Idaho attending a conference called ‘Offermind’. It was primarily about marketing and how to create an irresistible offer, but there were lots of golden nuggets that applied to speaking too!

As you may know I coach and consult on marketing and speaking with a specific focus on storytelling and humour. That’s because I believe that the two are so closely linked AND as well as educating and motivating your audience speaking is also one of the best ways to market and sell your products and services.

All of the speakers who were on stage at the conference were amazing and I was particularly chuffed to be able to see one of my marketing heroes in action. This guy is also one of the highest paid speakers in the world, so when he talks, I listen. He gave away many value bombs during his keynote including the one I’m going to be sharing with you today!

Enjoy!

What this episode covers:

  • Why frameworks are important
  • How to make your audience engage with the framework before you even share it with them
  • How the same teaching framework will enable you to flex your talk to fill five minutes or five hours!
  • When you should stay at the strategy level and why.
  • The one thing you should always do with your framework to get your audience motivated to implement what you’re sharing.

04 Mar 2023Thrutopia - The New Storytelling Genre with the Power to Change Everything with Manda Scott - 25801:31:52

As speakers we are using stories to affect our audience. At the bare minimum a story will entertain. When you begin to infuse the story with emotions, fears and desires that your audience shares then it becomes engaging at the next level.

But if we truly want our audience to shift into action then our stories must show transformation, and this is the type of story that I teach speakers to use in their talks.

When I heard about Manda Scott’s new take on transformational storytelling for writers, I wanted to get her on the show to find out more.

Manda has had an interesting journey from veterinary surgeon, to best-selling novelist, to founder of the ‘Accidental Gods’ movement and podcast, and the Thrutopian genre of writing.

Her own story is fascinating and she shares some experiences she has had that you might find challenging, because they feel so far removed from ‘convention’.

There is so much value and importance in what she shares, and if you want to effect real change as a speaker, then this show is for you.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • Why we are not fixed to one path or purpose and how Manda discovered each new chapter of her life.
  • The concept of ‘accidental gods’ and what this means for each of us
  • What the new ‘Thrutopian’ writing genre is and its power to make change a reality.
  • How speakers can use the ‘Thrutopian’ approach to bring new possibilities into being.
  • The importance of intuition and ways that we can get more in touch with our true self.
  • Why fear is our biggest enemy.
  • How we can connect better with each other and the world around us
  • Manda’s view of the essential elements of a story that gets people into action
  • The secret to writing a best selling book.

25 Feb 2021How to Master Your Mind and Memory with Anthony Metivier (Part Two) - 15900:48:15

There are some obvious benefits to improving your memory if you’re a speaker, or you need to use speaking as part of your job or to grow your business. Remembering your content, people’s names, complex information to name but a few… BUT besides these valuable advantages that improving your memory brings, there are other positives that make it a compelling goal.

That’s why I am so pleased to have Dr. Anthony Metivier as a guest on this two-part show.

Since confronting his own negative beliefs about his memory, and seeing the amazing results he achieved, he has taught thousands of students in three different countries to achieve incredible results too.

What you’ll discover:

  • What aphantasia is and why Anthony thinks it’s a myth that causes a lot of unnecessary suffering.

03 Sep 2017No Negative Thought Puts You in the Corner! - 00100:27:05

Welcome to the first episode of ‘The Speaking Club’, a podcast I’ve wanted to do for a long time to share some of the insights I’ve picked up over the years, and to share the learning from experts that will be coming on as guests, to help with all aspects of your public speaking journey.

My other key aspiration with this podcast is to have some fun! Laughter has been a big part of my life, and I think there’s not enough of it in business, so I’m hoping with the learning, you also get some smiles.

Whether you’re just starting out, have some experience with speaking in public, or you make a living speaking professionally, there’s will be something here for everyone.

In this first episode, I tell you a bit more about the show, my background story, and share some tools and techniques for overcoming any fears you may have around public speaking, that will also work for other areas of your life.

Mindset is such an important skill to master for public speaking success. Lots of people have a general fear about speaking full stop, whilst many have a fear around a particular area, maybe adding humour, story-telling, or audience interaction, which hampers their ability to become a great speaker, rather than just an adequate one. This hit home to me recently because of a response I got to one of the questions within a survey I put out. The person wrote that they had such fear around giving presentations, that they actively avoided any chance of doing so, even if it meant missing out on promotions in the past. Having your ambitions and life limited in this way is so sad, and I hope that some of the tips I share in this episode will help anyone else feeling that way, whatever the fear is related to.

So, in this episode here’s what you learn:

  • The rule for overcoming fear and increasing confidence.
  • Where negative thoughts come from and why it’s completely normal to have them.
  • How you can manage and neutralise negative thoughts to diminish their power.
  • How you can develop your power to control your mind for peak performance and increased focus.
  • The secret tool for overcoming procrastination when it comes to taking important decisions.
  • A great technique to stop your mind sabotaging you taking action towards achieving your goals and dreams.

17 May 2018The After-Dinner Speaker is Served with Jeremy Nicholas - 03501:01:37

Jeremy Nicholas gave up on a career in engineering before he’d even started, choosing to pursue his passion for radio, (even though his Mum said he was boring). He spent many years in broadcasting, also doing voiceover work, (you will recognize his dulcet tones if you are a FIFA Football video game fan), and trying his hand at stand-up comedy, before transitioning to a career in speaking. He is known for being a funny story teller and has many tales to draw on from when things went wrong on broadcasts for the Beeb.

In this show he gives the lowdown on the different types of speaking and talks us through how he prepares for each. He shares how he uses stories and props in his talks and how he teaches corporate clients how to be more engaging. You will also find out about his upcoming one man show, and his comedy trousers.

What you’ll learn:

  • The difference between being an MC, After Dinner Speaker and Keynote.
  • How Jeremy prepares for the different types of speaking.
  • How Jeremy built up his after-dinner material.
  • The way that Jeremy uses stories in his keynote.
  • Why you should keep a story diary.
  • How developing your comedy and performance muscles can improve your speaking.
  • What parts of your speaking you should develop for success?
  • Should you specialize in a type of speaking?
  • How Jeremy makes his talks more engaging and tips for you too.
  • How to get more attention after a speech!
  • Why it’s important to stick to your guns if you charge a speaking fee.

14 Dec 2023Stop Being Humble and Step into Your Power with Lisa Bragg - 27701:04:15

SUMMARY

Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way.

SHOW NOTES

We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, ‘nobody likes a show off’, ‘stay humble’ and ‘self praise is no praise’. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time.

When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and ‘tut’ and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done).

But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a ‘show off’, in fact they’re getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients.

And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off.

The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority,  and experience

Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May.

In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a

TV reporter and anchor for 15 years.

I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to!

Enjoy

What you’ll discover:

  • The catalyst for Lisa to embrace ‘bragging’ and why she had avoided it before.

  • Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit?

  • The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and ‘the range of acceptable behaviour’.

  • Why you shouldn’t market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead.

  • The myths around bragging that could be holding you back.

  • Why finding a partner can help you with promotion.

  • The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging.

  • Three tips for promoting yourself the right way.

  • How Lisa uses speaking in her business.

One of the main things I teach people is how to get and keep peoples’  attention. That’s because in today’s world attention is more precious and valuable than gold.

Social media companies employ genius minds to work out better ways to keep us ‘in the matrix’, and all of us are bombarded with notifications, information, entertainment and choice. So... not only is it harder to get peoples’ attention, it’s harder for us all to pay attention.

Yet without time that’s free from distraction, we will never get our best work done. That’s why I’ve brought this show back into focus for you. It’s one of the first 50 shows I released and I believe it is one of my best.

09 Sep 2021Best Of: The 4 Steps to Framework Success in Your Public Speaking - 18700:18:12

Have you got a framework that pulls your IP together and makes your idea, product or service more memorable?

I believe if you haven’t - you should!

Recently, something happened with one of my mastermind members that brought the content of this episode to mind.

She had been stuck with her messaging and content - yes, she was moving forward but it felt like she was wading through treacle, rather than being inspired, energised and motivated.

Then a conversation happened at a networking meeting which helped her to identify a framework for the process she takes her clients through.

Suddenly the clouds parted and this is what she said …

“This framework could then form the basis of all my conversations … I have to say it’s got me all fired up!”

So, if you’re lacking in motivation around your messaging, perhaps creating or refreshing your framework might help!

What’s also important is when you find it, you share it in the best way, and that’s why I’ve dug this episode out of the archives for you.

30 Jan 2020Getting Your Public Speaking Persona Right! - 10300:17:22

There are a lot of organisations, coaches and possibly even people you know with opinions and advice about what makes a good speaker. There are probably also lots of speakers you admire. All of this can sometimes lead people to develop a presentation style that isn’t in line with their natural way of being and personality.

I have some strong views on persona and in this show I’m taking a look at persona, what it is, how important it is in public speaking and even how you can find out what yours is.

Enjoy!

What you’ll discover:

  • Whether you should develop a different persona for public speaking
  • Why you, your message and your audience need to be in alignment
  • Why I disagree with Roger Ailes
  • What a vitamin brand can teach us about how we need to be on stage
  • How you don’t need to lose yourself even if you want to be funny
  • How you can discover your persona
  • The difference between me and Gary V
  • Why you are absolutely enough!

06 Feb 2025[Quick Tip] How to Get More People to Follow You - 31200:13:07

Many experts and authors that reach out to me are frustrated that they are struggling to build a following.

They often compare themselves to others and think they aren’t connecting with people because of their persona, or their style, but that’s not it.

There is a reason that others, often less qualified, are reaching and engaging more people and in this show, I’m going to share what that is with you.

In this show I’m covering:

  • Why you aren’t getting traction with your message.
  • The secret to connecting with your audience.
  • How to supercharge that connection.
  • When ‘you’ come into the equation.

I hope there’s some tips in this episode that will help, whichever scenario you’re in.

18 Mar 2021The 4 Step Formula for Smashing Interview Presentations! - 16200:24:23

The news that you’re going to have to do an interview presentation can result in a number of different reactions. Frustration and worry, overconfidence, or a complete meltdown that can even lead to withdrawing your application!

It’s understandable why people can feel nervous, or cavalier about them. Often you get just a title, if you’re lucky maybe a few lines of a brief, and if you’re unlucky maybe you won’t know what you’ve got to present on until you arrive at the interview.

Even in the best scenario, where you have a bit of a brief, it can feel like you have very little control, like you don’t really know what they want and so you either get analysis paralysis or you decide to ‘wing it’.

What I want to do in this show is to shift you away from these reactions, and show you a formula that you can apply to interview presentations.

Using these four steps will put you back in the driving seat, and build your confidence, so that you can be satisfied you gave it your best shot.

What you’ll discover:

  • How to mentally set yourself up for success.
  • The lessons I learned from a golf psychologist that can help you too.
  • The dots you need to connect between the job and the  presentation.
  • The universal preparation questions you need to ask yourself.
  • The maths exam technique you need to apply to interview presentations.
  • Tips for your interview presentation design.
  • How to get the edge over the competition.

Enjoy!

He has written many others and his latest book, ‘Fix This Next’, is accidentally, but perfectly timed to help many business owners suffering as a result of the crisis.

In this show, I’m getting the low down from Mike on many things that will help you as a speaker and business owner to move forward despite the challenges that you are facing on the journey.

I hope you enjoy the show.

What we talk about:

  •     Why Mike has dedicated his life to investigating the journey of successful entrepreneurship.
  •     The origin of Profit First as a way of managing cash in your business.
  •     Why traditional accounting methods don’t work for entrepreneurs.
  •     How ‘Profit First’ works.
  •     The amazing results it has had for entrepreneurs and businesses in sustaining profitability.
  •     The ‘Survival Trap’ exercise that you can run for your business.
  •     Why Mike developed the ‘Business Hierarchy of Needs’ to identify the right actions for your business if you’re feeling overwhelmed or facing a crisis in your business.
  •     The story of Cottonwood Coffee and how they used the business hierarchy of needs.
  •     How speaking fits into what Mike does.
  •     Why you should give people actionable content when you’re speaking.
  •     The ‘One Step Back’ technique and how you can use it to pivot.
  •     Why you shouldn’t give until it hurts and what you do should always have a sales foundation.
  •     How and why Mike uses stories and humour in his talks.
  •     The way that Mike overcame his public speaking anxiety.
  •     Why you should listen to people’s wallets, rather than their words.

29 Oct 2020Why You Should Stop Listening to this Podcast - 14200:17:12

If you’re currently not getting the results you want with your speaking or business, then this episode is probably going to help you.

I think at some point we’ve all fallen into the trap I’m talking about today, I know I have and still do.

It’s one of the best ways we deceive ourselves into thinking we’re moving forward, when it’s actually like we’re on a treadmill, and we’re only walking on the spot.

Fortunately, when I can’t see it for myself, I’ve got a coach that calls me out on it.

I genuinely want to help you get your message out there powerfully, so that you can grow your audience, and make a difference to their life and yours.

So, it’s time for some tough talking from me.

I want to help you see if you’re also making this mistake, and if you are, consider this a coaching episode where I’m calling you out on it too!

What you’ll discover:

  • Why you should stop listening to this podcast.
  • Whether you’re in the 2%.
  • The common mistake that will deceive you into standing still.
  • The two views about improving performance.
  • Why self-improvement can fall short.
  • The three pillars for speaking mastery.

Enjoy!

01 Jun 2024The True Levers You Need to Pull for Positive Change with Ruth Taylor - 29101:01:39

We are living in tumultuous times, we are facing some of the biggest challenges ever as a species, and as individual countries, organisations and people.

And despite the huge incentives to come together to work through these problems, we are in a lot of ways more divided than ever before.

Many speakers today are talking on some of these big topics and wicked problems, looking to shift audience perspectives and inspire them to get into action and make positive change happen.

To achieve this, conventional wisdom has suggested that we need to incentivise people to make a change by tapping into material desires because that is what society is geared to admire and aspire to.

But what if that isn’t true, what if there are more powerful levers to pull to effect change?

My guest, Ruth Taylor, is going to share another perspective on drivers for change that will help you share your message with more power and impact.

Ruth has worked in the field of social and environmental change for close to 15 years. She is driven by the question of how more people can be encouraged to think, feel and act differently when it comes to the multiple and interconnected challenges we are experiencing globally.

Currently, Ruth splits her time between working for the Common Cause Foundation, a small not-for-project working to rebalance the values we see championed in our cultures, and as a freelance narrative strategist, supporting a range of different organisations from NGOs to cultural institutions to consider how their work could help shift harmful narratives towards more regenerative and just alternatives. Ruth also loves to write and her work can be found on Medium.

I know you are going to get a lot of food for thought here, so listen up!

What you’ll discover:

  • Ruth’s journey into social change.
  • What ‘narrative change’ is all about.
  • How the common cause foundation came into being.
  • The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic values
  • Why leveraging intrinsic values is more powerful than extrinsic values.
  • How you should use intrinsic value led messaging to grab attention in the corporate world.
  • What ‘woke’ capitalism is and whether it’s a good thing.
  • Tips for speakers to make their message more transformational.
  • The values 101 training course and what you can do next.

11 Oct 2017Murder Most Engaging with Helen Saxton - 00400:34:17

In this show, Helen Saxton, tells us about how she managed to combine all her passions to create a unique business. It’s a business which uses storytelling brought to life to keep audiences engaged, entertained and learning. She shares some great tips for dealing with difficult delegates, and how she uses humour to bond teams.

Helen is also an award-winning pitcher, (not the baseball kind, (although I didn’t ask that question, so I might be selling her short there)), and gives some insight into how she developed and delivered her barn storming business pitch. Hope you enjoy this episode and get some useful tips for your speaking journey.

19 Dec 2019How to Use and Interpret Non-Verbals to Get What You Want with Shelly O’Donovan – 09700:59:32

Shelly O’Donovan, CEO of the Authentic Influence Group is back to give us more insight and tips about non-verbal communication. She is an expert in body-language and facial expressions after switching from over 20 years in the public policy arena. She has worked with corporations to shape their strategy and building bridges between the commercial interests of organizations and government affairs. During her time working in government relations, public policy, lobbying, grassroots advocacy, legislative and regulatory processes, and policy maker engagement she has seen the gamut of body language dos and don’ts. It was in this arena she noticed some of the brightest people weren’t having the impact they deserved, yet others with half the substance and potential were having great success.

After studying the arts of body language, personality types and lie detection, not only did Shelly see her own status and influence increase, but she was able to discern why others were successful or not. Today she speaks, coaches and trains on increasing the impact of your body language for speaking, confidence, gravitas, and sales, and we are lucky enough to have her on the show again sharing what she knows to increase our success in these areas.

What you’ll learn

  • How we make our non-verbals match our message
  • How to decode the face of someone you’re speaking to
  • What micro-expressions you should be looking out for when you pitch and why
  • How to sell anything to anyone using body language
  • The body language ticks of Donald Trump
  • What non-verbal branding is and why you should care about it
  • The non-verbal brand of James Corden and what it says about him
  • Why you should ask for feedback after you speak
  • How you can tell if someone is lying
  • Why the story of Pinocchio’s nose has some foundations in truth
  • How Shelly uses body language in her talks to connect and engage
  • Why you should be open and flexible as a speaker

18 May 2023Becoming a Magnetic Speaker with Tina Bakehouse - 26501:05:36

Adding the label of speaker to your bio is becoming more common, but calling yourself a speaker and actually being able to deliver your message in a way that educates, inspires and motivates are two very different things.

There are lots of people boring the pants off audiences, when they don’t need to, and this is a belief that my guest Tina Bakehouse and I share in common.

Tina is a communications coach and soon to be author of a new book called ‘Discover Our Magnetic Speaker Within’. She asked me and other speaking coaches to input into the book and I am chuffed to have her come on the show to share more about it and for us to discuss some great tips for helping you become that magnetic speaker.

Tina spent many years teaching communications in education, and then in the corporate world, before striking out to set up her own business in 2020.

A former Disney Cast Member and TEDx speaker and coach, Tina is passionate about educating others to become more self-aware and enhance their speaker style.

25 Mar 2021How to Spend Your Time Wisely with Catherine Gladwyn - 16300:47:12

If you’re hustling day and night, but finding you’ve very little to show for it in terms of results, then don’t worry you’re not alone.

One of the biggest complaints you’ll hear from people in business is that “there’s not enough time in the day”... any yet many of us are wasting so much of it without even realising.

This can cause overwhelm, stress, anxiety and potentially burnout… and that’s why I wanted to bring Catherine Gladwyn on this show.

She’s an expert business mentor and multi-award winning #1 bestselling author of two business books. In 2018 The Independent newspaper listed her first book as one of ten best business books written by women and since then she has gone on to be featured in many national publications including The Guardian, Forbes, Cosmopolitan, etc.

Catherine has learnt through experience and necessity how to protect and value her time.  That’s because as well as enduring a recurring brain tumour, she also lives every day with Addison’s disease.

After needing four months off in 2019, she has now designed and built her business so that if she ever needs surgery again, her business can continue on without her, keeping her finances and business presence secure.

In this show, she’s not only sharing how to keep your business safe, but also how to grow by doing less.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why valuing Catherine’s time became a necessity
  • The difference between knowing what you need to earn and knowing your hourly rate.
  • Why creating time boundaries is important, and where you should implement them first.
  • The benefits of outsourcing.
  • What you should outsource first and why.
  • How Catherine uses a VA in her business to to accelerate her growth whilst minimising time and effort.
  • What not to outsource.
  • Why and how to find a replica of you.
  • Tips on finding the right support.
  • Advice on delegating and how to ‘let go’.
  • Why Catherine believes ‘avatars’ are overdone.
  • Catherine’s 20% rule - what is it and why you should care about it.
