12 Jan 2023 | SPE Live Podcast: Interoperability as a Key Factor to Better Drilling Automation | 00:29:41
Drilling operations involve many different service providers, each addressing specific facets of the well construction process. In practice, the drilling organization, including the support from onshore operation centers, addresses the coordination of the various tasks executed by multiple entities. Yet, the natural fragmentation of drilling operations into multiple services has slowed down the implementation of drilling automation solutions because computer systems from each involved party are traditionally not designed to exchange information with other systems. The SPE Drilling System Automation Technical Section has therefore started an initiative to define standards for computer interoperability during the drilling process. This sub-committee is called D-WIS for Drilling and Wells Interoperability Standards. In this SPE Live, Eric Cayeux and Deep Joshi talk about interoperability as the key factor to better drilling automation. As often experienced in a multi-disciplinary effort, it has been necessary to first define a common terminology. A classification of typical drilling operation functionalities was then defined. This classification has been structured in hierarchical control terms. Emphasis has been put on the generality of the proposed solutions in order to allow drilling system automation providers to reach the vision: “develop once, implement anywhere”. Furthermore, in the context where multiple parties can provide simultaneous advice, a solution for the integration and conflict resolution of concurrent advisors is proposed. The industry-wide workgroup effort has now reached the point where the developed solutions are getting tested on more complex use cases. Speaker: Eric Cayeux, Chief Scientist Moderated by Deep Joshi, Data Scientist

In this episode: JPT: What’s the Difference Between Tier 1 and Tier 2? Not Much The formula for value in a shale play used to be simple, lease acreage in the best quality rock based on Tiers cover large areas. That standard is fading as it has become obvious that the rock is highly variable and the drilling and completion designs are just as important. ======================================== JPT: Heavy Oil Innovation Haunted by Low Oil Prices and Bad Memories Heavy production spiked in two Canadian wells heated by an electric cable, but it is hard to find customers there at a time when Canadian oil prices and customers remember cables in the past that died young. ======================================== JPT: An Unconventional Challenge: Can Casing Failures During Hydraulic Fracturing Be Stopped? The shale sector is seeking answers to a complex issue involving casing deformations that block access to long sections of a lateral. As opposed to frac hits, this rising problem is considered to be an intrawell phenomena.

04 Apr 2024 | SPE Live Podcast: Hydrogen as Part of the Energy Mix – Commercial and Technical Perspectives | 00:32:32
A hydrogen economy envisions using hydrogen as a clean, low-carbon, and versatile energy carrier and fuel. It offers benefits in terms of energy security, public health, and economic development. Initially, Blue Hydrogen manufactured from natural gas in combination with CCS could help diversify our market options while helping to reduce greenhouse emissions. It has the potential to generate new job opportunities for many of us in the O&G Industry. The global market for hydrogen and fuel cells is expected to grow from $5.5 billion in 2018 to $42.5 billion by 2026. However, Hydrogen is certainly not a silver bullet. A rapid expansion in hydrogen usage also requires that we collectively address several challenges and barriers especially in the areas of storage and transportation. Hydrogen and Ammonia should be seen as complementary energy delivery options that will rapidly expand alongside LNG, renewable, modular nuclear reactors, geothermal and small-scale hydro-projects. This SPE live will introduce the SPE Hydrogen Technical Section and discuss H2 as part of the energy mix, addressing the investment landscape and technical challenges and opportunities. Moderated by Zachary Evans, Sales Director Underground Storage, DarkVision. From Shauna's July President's Column: Of all the programs that SPE offers, the most rewarding and enjoyable ones for me personally are the conferences. I love walking the floor of an exhibition hall, discovering the latest technology advancements, and listening to the various product demonstrations. I look forward to running into fellow SPE members in the vast conference halls and catching up on what they’ve been doing since we last met. When exiting the room of a technical session, I like being able to turn to the person next to me and ask their opinion about the presentations we just heard. Finally, I relish being able to attend the receptions and luncheons to network with industry colleagues. I attribute most of my career achievements to those moments of connecting with others and learning from them during SPE conferences.

21 Sep 2023 | SPE Live Podcast: Digital and Physical Core Analysis: Data Comparison, Integration, and Challenges | 00:32:21
Digital rocks include various subsurface formation imaging such as logging while drilling, wireline logging, and seismic imaging, as well as imaging rock samples on the surface. The focus of this SPE Live meeting is on digital rocks that are derived from formation samples (cores, sidewalls, cuttings) on the surface. The term “digital rock” means that we build multi-dimensional multi-scale digital description of a rock that allows us to compute various properties such as: fluid flow, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, acoustic, and mineralogical, to name a few. We discuss how does digital rock analysis fit into the formation evaluation and reservoir engineering processes. It is a relatively new technology, and its advantages and limitations need to be considered. Multi-dimensional simulations of physical processes provide the option to derive properties for difficult rocks, explore the effects of parameter variabilities, reduce/quantify uncertainties, and leverage complex laboratory-derived data. Digital rock analysis is here to stay, and we believe it will eventually become an integral part of core analysis programs. Moderated by Zoya Heidari, Associate Professor at UT Austin. Speaker: – Denis Klemin, Digital Rock Domain Champion at SLB

01 Aug 2024 | SPE Live Podcast: Rising to the Challenge of the Constantly Changing World of Work - A Conversation with Brian Kraus | 00:31:09
A major study from ERM, the global sustainability consulting firm, has produced a wealth of insight on a range of topical issues in the field of health and safety. ERM engaged 256 Health and Safety Function Leaders from companies that directly employ 11 million people in addition to many millions of contractors in the 2nd half of 2023. Over 36,000 H&S professionals work with the participating companies which have operations in more than 150 countries and combined revenues of US $7.2 trillion, equivalent to 7.2% of global GDP in 2022. The study builds on earlier studies undertaken in 2018 and 2021. The engagements with the Function Leaders addressed topical issues in H&S at this time, such as psychosocial risk and the application of AI in H&S, but also revisited a number of themes which were addressed in the earlier studies which are a source of persistent challenge for organizations; an opportunity to examine trends in areas including changing stakeholder expectations, investment in H&S and management of H&S for contractors which undertake higher risk activities in the workplace. Many fresh insights emerged from the engagements: useful lists of concerns, investments in H&S, uses of AI and approaches to address a broad range of challenges as well as data on ratios of H&S professionals to employees, reporting lines for the function and much more. What has become apparent is that many of the concerns that emerged from engagements with the Function Leaders in 2018 and 2021 emerged once again from the analysis of data in 2024. The context is the pace of change, not just in the field of H&S itself (stakeholder expectations, regulatory requirements, use of technology and more), but also in the nature of work, the composition of the workforce and where work is delivered. The pace of change has accelerated over the last 3 years. And it is clear expectations and impacts on business will continue to rise (the Function Leaders are virtually unanimous on this) and changes in the world of work will continue at a pace. It is not going to get easier. The data suggest meaningful progress in many areas but also strongly suggest the underlying issues identified in the earlier studies have not been resolved, despite increasing leadership engagement, higher levels of investment and widespread application of software solutions and new technologies. But, in some areas the gap has widened. H&S functions, catapulted into a new paradigm and challenged to access talent with the necessary skills, are stretched, as are the Function Leaders. Brian Kraus provides a high-level overview of the insights from this seminal study including a number of insights specific to upstream oil and gas.

11 Jan 2024 | SPE Live Podcast: The Role of Pressure Transient Analysis in CCUS Projects | 00:31:59
Pressure transient analysis (PTA) is an important tool for petroleum engineers to characterize and evaluate oil and gas reservoirs. This is particularly true during the exploration and appraisal stages of a project to understand the nature of the reservoir and derive some of its critical properties but is also very valuable as a monitoring tool to track the evolution of properties altered by production operations or fluid fronts. The associated literature is rich in models, tools and methodologies that have been built over decades. Similar questions need to be answered in CO2 injection projects to characterize injectivity, formation petrophysical properties, reservoir extent or fluid front movements, however PTA does not appear to have garnered much interest for those applications. Be it in saline aquifers or in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, the application of PTA techniques either as evaluation or monitoring tools does not appear to have been studied extensively, even though physical phenomenon can potentially be more complex considering relative permeability changes, miscibility effects, phase changes, geochemical or geomechanical effects that can impact CO2 injection processes. This SPE Live aims at reviewing the state of the art and the current limitations of PTA usage for CCUS applications, determining areas of future research to better understand the impact of the physical phenomena involved, as well as outline best operational practices and interpretation tools that would unlock the value of transient flow tests in that field. Moderated by Florian Hollaender, Scientific Advisor at SLB. Speakers: o Mehdi Zeidouni, Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering Louisiana State University o Anton Shchipanov, NORCE o Jordan Mimoun, Empire Well Test Consulting

24 Jun 2020 | SPE Gaia Talks: Measuring What Matters | 00:54:31
The panel addresses sustainability in the oil and gas industry using the lens of “Measuring what Matters”. Notwithstanding current global socio-economic conditions, oil and gas is being held to account on its environmental, social and governance performance against a backdrop of climate change and of biodiversity depletion. Current sustainability measurement efforts by the industry are largely carried out to satisfy external stakeholders and even then, very imperfectly to the detriment of the public, policymakers, investors and the industry itself. This panel discussion will look at how better to serve these communities and in particular the internal stakeholders - the business decision-makers in business administration, operations, R&D and commercial roles – so that they and their business can better enable development that is truly sustainable. Our expert panel discusses the significant steps toward fit-for-decision data for both internal and external stakeholders.

21 Mar 2024 | SPE Live Podcast: Artificial Intelligence Systems and Drilling | 00:28:04
During the last few years, there has been an increasing focus on automation solutions for drilling, with many of these solutions already in the market. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are usually part of these solutions. During this SPE Live, we focus on AI systems that are targeting higher levels of automation, some reaching all the way to autonomy. One requirement for such systems to be taken into use is to be trustworthy. But what does this mean and how to achieve it? At the same time, drilling involves multiple providers, which reflects on the data and information flow, hence adding a new level of complexity for any automation solution. In drilling automation, usually several automation solutions from different providers need to seamlessly work together to ensure safe drilling operations. This raises several challenges when it comes to the stability of such a multi-agent system. The Verification and Validation subcommittee of the SPE Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section is focusing on how to address the verification and validation of the interplay in a multi-agent architecture with multiple providers and we discuss some of the current activities in this subcommittee. Speaker: Rodica Mihai, Senior Researcher in the energy modelling and automation group, at Norwegian Research Centre Moderated by Deep Joshi, Data Scientist at Quantum Capital Group. 09 Feb 2023 | SPE Live Podcast: Accelerating the Value with Women Talent in Oil and Gas | 00:32:33
The oil and gas industry has traditionally had a low representation of women in technical roles. One possible explanation for this disparity may be a lack of awareness and initiatives aimed at promoting and supporting the inclusion of women. However, with the growing importance of data science and artificial intelligence in the industry, there is an opportunity to attract more women to these fields. To do this, a top-down approach may be necessary, focusing on developing and supporting female talent and providing easier access to opportunities. 25 Aug 2020 | Staying Strong with Shauna Noonan | 00:34:41
"Members often ask me if I am disappointed with how the latter portion of my presidency was affected by the pandemic and the crash of oil prices. To be honest, I am not disappointed. I was able to visit many sections as President-Elect and speak at many events; however, the role of SPE President is much greater than that. This time was critical to serve as chair of the SPE Board and guide our society through an inflection point, requiring us to anticipate how to deliver on our mission to our members in a post-pandemic world". In this episode, Shauna Noonan shares the status of each goal she set while being this year's SPE President and the pandemic’s impact on it.

From Shauna's August President's Column: I am proud to be part of a society with so many strong leaders, contributors, and champions within its ranks. As I traveled the globe to engage with our membership, my pride in being a petroleum engineer and professional in the oil and gas industry grew with each visit. I want to thank all the sections and chapters that hosted me, and I pledge to keep my promise to meet with sections where visits were canceled due to the pandemic. I want to thank our SPE staff from all our regional offices for their constant efforts to implement and maintain the programs and create the tools identified in SPE’s strategic plan. I also want to express my gratitude to my employer, Occidental Petroleum, for its steadfast support and understanding throughout my journey as SPE President. It is one thing for an individual to see the value that SPE provides in terms of competency development, but it is even better to work for a company that recognizes it as well. As I worked to make our society stronger, I, too, have gained strength from this memorable experience.

From Shauna's March President's Column: As an industry, we need to eliminate the mindset of “if it is not invented here, it won’t work.” We need to stop developing in geographical silos and become open to the potential that there may be lessons to learn from other basins around the world. We also need to stop operating in functional silos. The process of extracting hydrocarbons from complex reservoirs requires a relentless collaboration between operators, service providers, and members of the academic community. It is about more than just submitting papers to OnePetro in hopes that our members will find the content. We must hold events in these developing basins and proactively provide our members with the latest technology and applications to be successful. 03 Dec 2019 | Strengthening Ways To Disseminate Knowledge with Shauna Noonan | 00:17:53
“To collect, exchange, and disseminate technical knowledge” are not only the first seven words of SPE’s mission but also what our society has excelled at over its storied history. — Shauna Noonan, 2020 SPE President Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question. More from Shauna Noonan Strengthening the Tools and Methods We Use To Disseminate Knowledge to Members Strengthening the Quality of SPE's Technical Content Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's December President's Column: SPE is evaluating how we disseminate our content to make it more visually engaging, bite-sized, and, of course, available through mobile devices. This evaluation includes reviewing the traditional way of publishing technical content through manuscripts. Many students and young professionals want to receive content at a high level first, such as a one-page summary with conclusions, and then can elect to access the full paper if they need the details. SPE may be able to use videos, podcasts, webinars, and other formats to accomplish this. One of my five focus areas during my time as your President will be to strengthen the tools and methods we use to disseminate knowledge to members. My objectives in this area are to create and elevate SPE initiatives to provide quality content in a variety of formats, such as print, video, and audio, so it is more engaging and consumable for all our members. I will also ensure that we will deliver on SPE’s Strategic Plan goals of having technical dissemination and exchange methods for easy access and delivery of content and tools through mobile devices. Our society is membership-driven, and our programs are designed to serve the needs of our diverse and talented membership. To ensure that our society remains relevant for years to come, we need to anticipate the needs of our future members so they are prepared to drive the next wave of innovations and technological advancements for our industry.
