19 Jul 2024Fintech Fridays #4 | Ghana is fast moving to the forefront of Cryptocurrency adoption finds new Binance survey00:06:18

On the fourth edition of Fintech Friday, we're diving into the exciting world of cryptocurrency adoption in one of Africa's leading countries, Ghana. In this episode, we'll explore how Ghana has emerged as a fast-growing economy and a hub for technology and startups, with a notable surge in smartphone adoption. We'll also delve into the results of a recent Binance and Pulse survey, revealing Ghana’s position as a front-runner in cryptocurrency and blockchain adoption on the continent. Join us as we discuss the potential impact of this trend on Ghana's financial landscape and what it means for the future of digital finance in Ghana.

Quote from Operations Manager of Binance Africa, Yande Nomvete:

“Our pulse survey really underscores how Ghana is embracing blockchain technology and how open they are to engaging on the topic,” says Yande Nomvete, Operations Manager for Binance in Africa. “The quiz achieved more than 20,000 impressions with a reach of more than 20,000 users over a three-day period, which is exceptional.”

The quiz was designed to unpack some of the core beliefs and understandings held by users in the region. From asking how important it is to have financial literacy in the context of cryptocurrency to unpacking how cryptocurrency can positively impact financial adoption in Africa, the survey prioritised core issues affecting companies and consumers. More than 50% of respondents believed that the significance of financial literacy in the context of cryptocurrency meant having an understanding of market trends, avoiding investment scams, and making informed decisions, highlighting a deep awareness of the rigour required to make the right investment choices with this currency.

More than 70% of respondents believe that cryptocurrency can positively impact financial inclusion in Africa by fostering innovation in the fintech sector and promoting economic growth, and yet the vast majority (more than 70%) are aware that using cryptocurrency requires vigilance and an awareness of security protocols.

“It was impressive how many respondents chose the correct security answers to questions around best security practices and approaches,” says Nomvete. “For example, when asked what was not a recommended security practice for cryptocurrency users, more than 70% said sharing private keys with friends. Users in the region also immediately identified the importance of anti-money laundering (AML) best practices in mitigating fraud, and the value of doing extensive research into reputable cryptocurrency exchanges before handing over their funds (60%).”

Ghana has a solid understanding of cryptocurrencies and the importance of building up a portfolio with a trusted service provider that has a reliable and proven reputation. Binance is determined to play a role in driving the adoption of trusted, reliable, and accessible cryptocurrency to the global market. Understanding the importance of crypto and how it can benefit the economy is key to ensuring growth, and working with a platform that prioritises security is essential to building a thriving portfolio. Binance has strict protocols, follows industry-leading technical measures, provides advanced data privacy tools, and has embedded security into the foundations of the organisation.

“Our understanding of the market wedded to the impressive cryptocurrency savvy of Ghanaian users equals long-term success for investors in this country,”

31 May 2024Ghanaian Cedi on Weakest Run since 1994, reports Bloomberg (Fintech Fridays #4)00:04:53

On Today's Fintech Friday edition, Adrian explores the Ghanaian Cedis reaching an all time low of one pound sterling to eighteen point seventy-five Cedis (£1 to GHC 18.75 Cedis).

Bloomberg reports:

"Ghana’s cedi is in a record-breaking weakening cycle. The currency hasn’t gained versus the dollar in the past 22 trading sessions, the longest streak according to data compiled by Bloomberg going back to 1994. The cedi traded 0.3% weaker at 13.9310 by 1 p.m. in London. It’s declined 14% this year, a slump beaten only by currencies that have been devalued, including the Egyptian pound and Nigerian naira."

Dr Andrews Ayiku also writes:

"The falling cedi has made it more difficult for SMEs to function successfully and compete in the market. These enterprises frequently operate with thin profit margins and insufficient means to hedge against currency changes, making them more vulnerable to the negative effects of the cedi’s depreciation."

How the declining Cedi is impacting businesses:

  • Increased production costs
  • Credit Loan difficulty
  • Challenges with cash flow
  • Volatility in input prices
  • Decreased competitiveness in export markets
  • Inflationary pressures

12 Jan 2025Mini-Documentary of Ghanaian Elementary and JHS School based in Accra (Out now on YouTube)00:03:20

In the heart of Ghana lies a school (Greatway Memorial Complex School) that once shone brightly as a beacon of hope for children seeking a better future. Founded by a mother, this school was more than just a place of learning—it was a sanctuary, a refuge where dreams took flight and possibilities seemed endless.

But time, relentless and unforgiving, has taken its toll. The previous owner's health has deteriorated and the school she poured her heart and soul into has fallen into disrepair. It breaks hearts to witness the decline of a place that meant so much to a mother and to the countless children whose lives she touched. But amidst the decay, there remains a glimmer of hope—a belief that we can breathe new life into this cherished institution.

Your contribution will aid in refurbishing the school in Accra , including replacing the roof and floor, acquiring new furniture, and granting underprivileged children the invaluable opportunity to access an education that has the power to shape their futures. Moreover, your support will enable the restocking of essential supplies and establish a secure, nurturing environment where children can thrive and grow. Every dollar you donate will directly impact the lives of these children, furnishing them with the necessary tools, resources, and opportunities essential for their success.

Together, let's restore hope. Let's rebuild this school in Accra and ensure that it continues to serve as a beacon of light in the lives of these children. Your generosity can make a world of difference.

We have a real conversation about being from the Diaspora, and if the Diaspora or Africans and Ghanaians living in the Western world abroad are at risk of losing their African roots because of the influences and pressures of the West, and vice versa, the West attempting to infiltrate African culture with westernised developments and infrastructure being heavily established in countries including Ghana.

In this episode, we discuss things like:

  • Black / African culture integrating with others

17 Feb 2022Is Ghana’s E-Levy, Heavy? | GRA to tax Online Business and Fintech | PodBites Ep.1700:16:54

2022 is looking to be another difficult year for online businesses and even consumers in Ghana.

Ghana wants to increase tax revenues by adding a levy on mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances.

Ghana's Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced back in November 2021 the introduction of the E-levy; a tax being passed onto Mobile Money (MoMo) Transactions.

Is the introduction of Ghana's E-levy (Electrical transaction levy) fair or another way of Government passing on taxes to the Ghanaian people?

Would the GRA taxing online businesses hinder Ghanaian's FinTech Startup industry?

21 Feb 2022Plastic Waste Management in Ghana and Across Africa | PodBites Ep. 1800:07:38

The sustainability of plastic waste in Africa is something we should all be concerned about. Plastic is a solution. Even some technologies use it. But plastic is also a problem we need to tackle as entrepreneurs and creative innovators.

This is exactly what an eco-conscious organisation, Eco Amet Solutions, hosted a webinar around.

Rivers, Oceans, Atmosphere, Food, plastic is EVERYWHERE!

We are surrounded by toxins. Yes in the West, we have recycling banks and recycling pickups in our local areas, but we still could do a lot more recycling in the west and especially in Africa. In recent years, nations have been looking at more sustainable ways of living and how to save our planet from the dangers of human activity,

How do you see plastic waste management in the 2020s? Are we in danger? Is this why the Climate Change and Green Agenda is huge?  and green-focused deals more than ever?

20 Mar 2022Ghanaian Cedis currency at an all time low, Gas and inflation at all time high - PodBites Ep. 20 ( The Sound of Accra Podcast Mini-Series)00:04:41

On Tuesday 15th march 2022, The Pound Sterling Passed the 10 Ghanaian Cedis mark briefly, meaning £1  converted to just over 10 Ghanaian Cedis. This is an all time low for the Ghanaian Cedis currency. Meanwhile, Gas prices are at an all time high, with diesel prices going past the 10 cedis mark also.

I released an episodes called the state of Ghana’s economy, Q4-2021, where I hinted that the Ghanaian economy was on a downwards spiral with inflation rising every week:

The State of Ghana's Economy Q4-2021

An interesting tweet has resurfaced by President Nana Akuffo-Addo, who tweeted on 4th May 2016: “The current depreciation of the Ghana Cedis against the US dollar is because of bad leadership. We should not be where we are today to buy the dollar for 3.72 cedis. Vote for Change #changenow"

Bloomberg has published that the ghana Cedi is now one of the worst performing currency among Africa’s top currencies.

Would Ghana still be one of the most attractive African destinations to live and invest in, for the coming years?

Tuesday 29th March was a bittersweet day Ghanaian Citizen.

Ghana qualified for the World Cup 2022 and had the upper hand in the classic Jollof  Derby.  They also  celebrated the birthday of the President of the Republic of Ghana, none other than H.E Nana Akuffo-Addo.  On this same day, the E-levy was passed.

The Tax levy was recently reduced from 1.75% to 1.5%. There were hopes this would eventually be reduced to 0%. Others hoped this E-levy would get approved, which has been the eventuality.

17 Apr 2022Ghana Food Wars: Is Uber Eats finally launching in Accra? | PodBites Ep. 2200:03:28

Following the success of Bolt FoodGlovoJumiaMenufinder, Hubtel, ShaQExpress and so much more, is Uber ready to open up its Food delivery services on Ghanaian shores?

In October 2021, you may recall I did an episode exploring how Bolt had taken over Uber in terms of Market share in Ghana. So why would Uber bother to enter an already saturated market of food delivery services in the country?

Now according to sources at Tech Nova, there are rumours brewing that Uber Eats is preparing to come to Ghana.

Would we see Uber finally enter the food delivery market in Ghana this year in 2022, or could this be something that may never happen,  or even be planned for further down in the future?

Weeks on since the official passing of the Ghana E-Levy, the dust has finally settled.

Times have never been easier for the Ghanaian Economy and the Ghanaian Citizen living in Accra and across Ghana.

However, there are are few electronic transactions that have been excused the Ghana E-Levy Fees. We explore these courtesy of My Joy Online.

Is this the most disliked Ghanaian Government administration of all time?

28 Apr 2022Elon Musk to Visit Twitter Africa HQ in Accra, Ghana? | Twitter Africa HQ to move to SA? | PodBites Ep.2400:04:05

Last year in May 2021, I mentioned Jack Dorsey, Co-founder of Twitter would be moving to Ghana for 6 months in the summer period. This obviously didn’t materialise as Jack Dorsey is too busy running Block, his parent company which focuses on empowering startups, which consists of Square, Weebly, Cash App, Jay-Z's Tidal, Stitch Labs and much more.!

With the recent acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, to add to his already impressive empire of billion and trillion dollar companies, what more could Elon ask for?

Twitter’s African presence in Ghana hasn’t yet made the impact native and Diaspora africans thought it would make just yet, apart from the clever billboards posted across Accra in 2021 and 2022 during the festive period, in collaboration with Ghana Twitter. However, Could a trip to Africa for Elon Musk be the game changer?

03 Jun 2022Ghana tops 9 Most Expensive African Countries to Rent a 1 Bed Apartment (On Ratios) | PodBites Ep. 2600:08:51

Business Insider Africa shows that Ghana is amongst the list of 9 African countries which are the most expensive places to rent in Africa.

This list is courtesy of Numbeo, the largest cost of living database in the world.. Those of you who have been following Season 3, we dropped an episode last year called “Is Accra Expensive”,  where Numbeo also reported that Accra is the 2nd most expensive city in the world,  which we debated of course.

So this list is based on property price to income ratio basically comparing the median household price within an area to the median household income.

Owning a property and renting in Africa has never been more expensive in such a climate where people flocking to Africa are pushing up the prices and coincidently, pricing out some of the natives who just can’t afford it. The gap between the rich, middle class and poor is getting wider.

We review in this episode, all the 9 countries on this list, including Ghana, based on the average salary per country and the going rate for a 1 bedroom apartment in each nations's capital.

17 Jul 2022TikTok tops Ghana, WhatsApp crowned King of Apps in Naija (PodBites Ep. 30)00:04:51

TikTok is Ghana's most popular app as of June 1 while WhatsApp tops the list in Nigeria.

Listen to find out who comes in at 2nd and 3rd  place.

This source comes in from Tech Cabal, A reliable Tech Publisher in Africa.

If this suggests anything, it definitely suggests that the culture is shifting in Ghana, where in normal circumstances, Facebook and Twitter have been the more popular apps in Ghana to be used for social media.

In 2020, TikTok had 100s of 1000s of Ghanaians using it, but in 2022, it shows no signs of slowing down in terms of growth, market share and acquisition.

14 Aug 2022Move to Ghana: 10 Practical Ways to Relocate To The Motherland (Book Review)00:08:46

Adrian reviews the new Book "Move to Ghana: 10 Practical Ways to Relocate To The Motherland" written by Adwoa Agyemang.

She moved to Ghana in 2012 and consequently became the author of this book, to help “address questions” from those willing to relocate but uncertain about what awaits them. The knowledge is therefore to help them plan and prepare before they move.

“The book will help you clarify your thoughts, identify opportunities around you and encourage you to start preparing for your journey back home, whether to live or to invest,” she wrote.

The book is structured into 10 chapters and each addresses a specific topic on the relocation plan. She offers key action points at the end of most chapters, where she offers practical and workable solutions to expected challenges, and how they can be overcome.

We discussed how to relocate successfully to Ghana, as well as investment opportunities and what to invest in.

In addition, we discussed when she moved to Ghana in 2012 and consequently became the author of "Move to Ghana: 10 Practical ways to move to the Motherland, to help “address questions” from those willing to relocate but uncertain about what awaits them.

20 Apr 2023Cantonments in Accra voted amongst the three most Luxurious Neighbourhoods in Africa (PodBites Ep.40)00:07:14

According to Estate Intel,  Cantonments has been ranked amongst Africa’s most luxurious neighbourhoods, alongside Westlands in Nairobi, Kenya and Ikoyi in Lagos, Nigeria.

Cantonments is certainly one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Accra. It’s home to popular schools in the city including Morning Star School, which is where I went, and GIS (Ghana International School). It’s also adjacent to Labone, Osu and the famous Oxford Street.  It's also surrounded by some top restaurants, bars, hotels and companies in the city including Huawei and PwC which are located at Cantonments City.

Cantonments is also home to many popular residential developments including AU Village, Cantonments city, Embassy Gardens developed by Clifton Homes and many more.  You also have a few of the high commissioners residing in Cantonments including The British High Commissioner, H.E Harriet Thompson. Adrian was fortunate to be invited to her private party in Accra in January 2023.

The criteria used to assess these affluent African neighbourhoods included:

  1. Rental Yields
  2. Sales Price Appreciation
  3. Development Pipeline and Expected Completions
  4. Land Price Appreciation
  5. Foreign exchange stability
  6. Construction cost

We got invited to Spotify HQ in London as party of a new programme by Spotify Labs to get more and better podcasters onto their platform.
