08 Aug 2023 | We Need To Talk About ED&I | 01:00:58
What are you actually going to do? What changes have you actually made? Are you still just talking and consulting? We've had so long to make changes and direct action in the #socialhousing sector to improve #EDI and on today's episode of The Social Housing Round Table with my brilliant co-host Emily Orme, CIHCM, and more than 50 registered guests, it was the topic of conversation. Everywhere that EDI has been actively promoted and achieved has resulted in a better business. And yet we can see from multiple projects including the one recently undertaken by Lara Oyedele that we've got a long way to go. - Where do you promote vacancies? Do you utilise networks actively promoting EDI? Do you question your recruiters on where they source candidates? - Are you still conducting just standard interview panels? Does this work for a Neurodivergent crowd? Do you ensure you have a diverse group for undertaking interviews, panels, or assessment days? Have you considered giving out interview questions beforehand? Or do you want it to be an exam? - Have you implemented the Rooney Rule? Anonymise CVs? Do all you can to remove unconscious bias? - Are your Officers all being paid the same to fight the gender pay gap? Assets, Development, Housing - are your Officers equal in your business? - When did you last undertake real training? Mandatory for all levels? - Is your culture really prevalent at all times? And is EDI a part of your culture? Action can be taken. It's not necessarily easy but it's certainly not impossible.

23 Feb 2024 | Socially Inclusive Recruitment to Tackle Skills Shortages | 00:57:18
Across the Social Housing Maintenance and Repairs market, it has been noticed that the current workforce is ageing with a lack of new blood coming into the market, so maybe a new approach needs to be adopted when recruiting to engage with an untapped talent pool.
How can a new approach be taken which at the same time can improve socio-economic situations for impoverished communities? Each year millions of pounds are invested in training young people, coupled with those who have retrained after falling out of the employment market, yet this untapped talent pool has not yet filtered through to Social Housing. How can recruitment strategies be altered to ensure opportunities are offered to the hardest-to-reach in society, adding Social Value, but also helping to solve the skills gap within the market and offer long-term sustainable employment to those in the local community?

This episode was co-hosted by Hony Premlal and we spent the hour deep-diving into bullying and harassment within the Social Housing sector. What was clear very quickly from our open and honest guests was that this is an issue that is still highly prevalent and ties back into the topic of culture I've been highlighting all year. Hony highlighted research which showed that more than £2.2bn is lost through bullying each year in the UK, and training for Managers, HR teams, and staff on how to combat this is greatly required. My main takeaway? Make your board accessible to your staff so that if they feel there is nowhere else they can go, they have an outlet that will hold the company to account

13 Nov 2023 | The Silent Pandemic: Suicide in Social Housing | 00:59:07
The #SocialHousing and #Construction industry has a suicide rate three times higher than the national average. The UK has the highest suicide rates in Western Europe, with more than 7,000 lives lost a year at an average age of 40. And over 7 million people work in Construction alone. This week's episode of The Social Housing Round Table is one which is brought to us by Shirley Heapy and Paul Bridge of The Clive Smith Foundation and must be spoken about. I've said for a long time that our discussion forum is one that will talk about, rather than around, the difficult topics our sector faces, and this is no different. Paul Bridge calls this The Silent Pandemic, and I'm inclined to agree. Join us to discuss why and what needs to change.
