17 Apr 202428 - Jennifer Haessler - ND & Faster Way to Fast Loss01:17:22

I met Jennifer when she was speaking at a WBOSS event here in Port Elgin. Before she took the stage, we exchanged small talk, but when she began speaking, it felt like destiny intervened – that’s a bit dramatic, but I really resonated with everything she said. At the end of her talk, she mentioned she loved books, and it cemented it for me – I had to have her on the podcast.

Jennifer is a Naturopathic doctor, and a Fast Way to Fat Loss Coach. Our discussion covers a lot. We cover everything from her background, to becoming a business owner, to her work as a Naturopathic doctor, and the benefits of fasting. There is even some book talk in there too!

Tune in for insights that impact both your business and well-being. Share this episode with friends—it’s a game changer!

06 Nov 2023Episode 7 - Crust and Crackle01:17:54

Let's grow together.

This is the seventh episode of the Small Towns, Big Dreams podcast.

This week Katy Stroud from Crust and Crackle joins me in my new studio. She was a big inspiration for the podcast, and I love talking to her about her background, her bread, her family, and how she makes working with a bakery in her house and with her husband work! She shares how it is important to be persistent, and consistent. Even with technical difficulties, and (not-so) fancy editing work, this is a great episode with a great guest.

Kelsey also gives some great tips and strategies on how to build your social media following – and why you should outsource the parts of your business that don’t inspire you to increase your profits.

12 Nov 202445 - “Nobody cares, work harder” - Topp Developments with Jesse T.01:05:10

I didn't know much about Jesse’s story before he reached out to be on the podcast, but I knew he had built several businesses in our town, so I didn’t hesitate to say yes. What I discovered after our conversation was that Jesse is not only incredibly knowledgeable about business and growth, but he also has an unwavering commitment to our community here in Saugeen Shores. As a new dad, he’s constantly adapting his priorities, but his dedication to supporting other small businesses, his students, and this town is deeply rooted in everything he does.

In this episode, we dive into so much: the discipline of Martial Arts, the ups and downs of running a gym, the strategies behind real estate investing, and the value of business mentors.

If you’re looking for motivation and encouragement, this episode is for you. Jesse’s insights on hard work, resilience, and adapting to challenges are inspiring, and his genuine desire to see others succeed shines through in every story he shares.

This is an episode that will leave you energized and ready to tackle your own goals - Don't miss it!

26 Nov 2024 47- “You don’t need anyone’s permission to do what you want to do” This Mother Means Business with Laura S.00:54:05

I've been following Laura and her brand, This Mother Means Business, on social media for a while now. When I saw her on Threads (we talk about her love for Threads!) and learned she was on a mission to appear on 52 podcasts this year, I knew I had to get her on mine.

In this episode, we dive into Laura's incredible journey: from her beginnings in marketing, to owning a CrossFit gym, to navigating a major pivot during COVID, and now running a successful business mentorship business.

Laura and I chat about everything from how childhood sports teach resilience, managing discomfort, and embracing failure—skills that build a foundation for entrepreneurship. About the invisible load of motherhood and she shares invaluable advice on finding the right business mentor, as well as how to recognize when it’s time to seek one out – and more.

This conversation is packed with insights and inspiration. With Laura’s impressive background and wealth of expertise, even just an hour left me feeling motivated and ready to take on new challenges.

If you’re thinking about working with a business mentor but don’t know where to start—or if you just want to hear from an expert who truly gets it—this is the episode for you.

(PS: If you’re a podcast host, consider interviewing other podcasters! Laura made this episode so easy to edit, either because everything she said was gold or because she knows the struggle of editing and made it a breeze for me.)

28 Mar 202425 - Recovering from Everything01:02:51

Kinga is a recovery and wellness coach who helps “everyone who’s ever had anything happen to them, ever”. She is a passionate advocate dedicated to guiding individuals on their journey to recovery from various life challenges including addiction. Drawing from her own experiences of overcoming addiction she empowers others through her online program, The Self Control Solution.

That is a very official sounding way of describing what Kinga does – but after my short interview with Kinga – I can tell she does way more than that.

When Kinga came to my house we sat Oprah style, and while I thought this interview would be all about her… it was actually quite a therapeutic interview for me. Kinga has this energy around her, where you feel safe and comfortable and she asked insightful questions that really made me question my past and present relationship with alcohol.

If you listen to this one, just know that I talk about some uncomfortable things, but I also know that my listeners may have uncomfortable things they need to talk about and Kinga might be your answer for that.

01 Mar 202422 - The Wellness Nurse00:49:15

Tara Tourloukis offers therapy for people feeling burnt out, overwhelmed and having trouble coping. We chat about the importance of talking about our mental health, mental health first aid, she also offers good advice for those of us feeling overwhelmed, and she shares good business advice for nurses and anybody else who wants to start their own business. Tara is making a difference in her client’s lives and I was so honoured to have her come and interview for the podcast.

During the interview, she gives a really good strategy when feeling overwhelmed:

Stop Skill –
Stop (Physically Stop Your Body)
Take a step back, Take a deep breath.
Observe what is happening – Is your environment overstimulating?
Proceed mindfully

I hope you know you don’t need permission, but if you ever need to take a break consider this permission from me and The Wellness Nurse to STOP.

10 Dec 202451- “How can I just make this gym the best gym possible, and provide the best atmosphere I can?” – Owen Sound Fitness & Training with Josh B.01:10:17

When I started the podcast, my husband immediately suggested I interview Josh. He had been following Josh's journey and his gym, and was convinced he’d have valuable advice and an inspiring story to share—and he was right.

Josh has traveled the world, gaining experiences that shaped his perspective. When faced with the choice between following a conventional path or pursuing his passion, he chose the latter.

His gym, Owen Sound Fitness & Training, is a 7,000-square-foot facility that feels more like a family than a typical big-box gym. Josh has built an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported, helping even the most hesitant individuals discover joy and success in their fitness journey.

In this episode, Josh and I talk about his past, his path to owning the gym, the growth and evolution of his business, as well as health, exercise, the benefits of cold plunging, and much more. Tune in today—this episode is packed with motivation and inspiration!

20 Nov 2023Episode 9 - Gather and Graze Co.01:13:59

Episode 9 –

Let’s grow together.

This week Randi McMann from Gather and Graze joined me in my ‘podcast studio’ to chat all things meat and cheese. As a hungry girl myself, meeting Randi in person was exciting because I feel like I have known her for so long, because of her authentic and genuine presence on social media. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, Randi is a big believer in, if you love something  - find a way to make money doing it. I enjoyed this episode a lot – It’s hard not to love an episode where the majority of the conversation centres around cheese.

10 Oct 202439 - “Going forward the decision that we make is the right decision” Marigold Media Studio with Cara V. and Yash M.01:10:32

Marigold Media offers professional media services and operates a beautifully curated natural light studio in Walkerton, ON. After moving from Toronto, Yash and Cara quickly fell in love with Walkerton and knew they wanted to contribute to the community. Yash launched House2Home, a professional real estate photography service, and together they built a stunning visual media studio in downtown Walkerton—filling a much-needed gap in the area.

Their energy is contagious; once you meet them, you'll want them on your team. They embody the spirit of, "If you have a dream, let’s make it happen." From their cozy studio in Walkerton, they help make your vision a reality.

I had the privilege not only to interview them but also to capture it for future content. Their studio is fully equipped with everything you need to bring your creative projects to life.

Their love for Walkerton and dedication to small business success is truly inspiring. I hope you feel the same energy when listening to the interview as I did recording it. Be sure to visit their studio on Durham St. and experience it firsthand!

31 Oct 202442 - "If you build it, they will come" Lighthouse Counselling with Reena B.00:50:12

I first met Reena through our children (my favorite way to make new friends!), and we quickly bonded over shared experiences and aspirations. I invited her to be a guest on the podcast after learning she had taken the exciting step of going full-time in her practice, Lighthouse Counselling.

At Lighthouse, Reena provides mindfulness-based, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive care, with a strong focus on acceptance and commitment therapy. Although I didn’t invite her just for a free therapy session, our conversation turned out to be incredibly insightful on navigating mindset, handling uncomfortable thoughts, and embracing growth.

The interview is candid and friendly; it’s essentially 50 minutes of Reena and me becoming best friends. I hope you walk away feeling inspired—and if you’ve been considering counseling but hesitated, perhaps this is your sign to take that step toward finding the right therapist for you (hint: try Lighthouse).

07 Jun 202435 - InstaCake Cards01:02:39

I'm thrilled to have my longtime friend Brianna joining us this week. Brianna and I grew up together—living just around the corner, riding the same bus, and even working side by side for years.

I've been following Brianna and her amazing company, InstaCake Cards, since the very beginning, and when I first launched this podcast, she was one of my biggest supporters.

InstaCake Cards has such an inspiring story. They landed their first big order right before March 2020 and have since embarked on an incredible journey—from starting in a garage to now operating out of a 7,000 sq ft warehouse. Their success story is wild as it involves: Netflix, Ellen DeGeneres, Dragon’s Den and more!

The best way to enjoy this podcast is with a delicious cake, obviously, and if you haven't tried an InstaCake Card yet, listen to this episode, then check them out online or at a retailer. You're going to love them!

And here's a sweet treat for our Small Town, Big Dream listeners: Brianna has generously provided a promo code for 10% off at InstaCakeCards.com. Use “SmallTownsBigDreams” (all one word). Plus, it’s also a referral code, so you’ll be supporting the podcast too!

Enjoy the episode!

04 Dec 202449 - "Don't wait for perfection" - Down North Garlic Co with Andrew R.00:52:22

Last season, Big Mama name dropped Andrew from Down North Garlic as a must-interview. Well, I finally sat down with him, and we dove into all things garlic, small business, and what it’s like to run a thriving operation in Grey-Bruce.

Andrew didn’t grow up as a garlic farmer, but he’s now one of the largest producers in the region! His passion for his work shines through every word as he talks about his family, his crops, and his growing business. I loved hearing about his plants and the unique products he’s creating—especially his black garlic salt. Full disclosure: since he gifted me a jar, I’ve used it on everything. It’s my new secret weapon in the kitchen – that I refuse to keep secret.

This interview is packed with insights, laughs, and some serious garlic love. I hope you enjoy it—and make sure to visit Andrew at one of his markets to try his garlic for yourself. Trust me, once you do, you’ll want to share this flavorful secret with everyone you know!

This was such an inspiring episode and interview. I hope you love it, and take away as many positive insights as I did.

Nicole is an inspiring creator who started her first business at 21. She opened Muskoka Aesthetics Inc. by herself, and turned it into a thriving team and company. In 2019, she also started Miskoka Beauty Inc after seeing a gap in the eye and brow industry.

Nicole believes in collaboration, growth, and inspiring the next generation of creators. She even has her own podcast “Beauty Behind the Brand” – which, if you love this podcast, you will love hers!

30 Nov 202448 - "You gotta keep your cup half full" - Thrix Salon with Amy T.00:52:09

This week is an exciting one because I got to interview my hair stylist, Amy!

I honestly can’t pinpoint when I first met Amy—small-town life means you just know everyone. But when my sister mentioned that Amy owned her own salon, I didn’t hesitate to book an appointment - I love supporting local & people I know - but fast forward a year, and not only is she my go-to stylist, but I also had the privilege of featuring her on the podcast!

Amy shares her journey to Thrix Salon and we chat her favourite parts of owning her business, as well as it's future.

We also chat about the Berford St. Collaborative. This is a shared space with four small, female-owned businesses. They come together in downtown Wiarton to offer beauty, health, and wellness services. It’s an inspiring environment that gives these business owners the freedom to create their own vision while benefiting from the support and camaraderie of a team – to me, this sounds like the perfect mix.

Amy’s story is one for anyone who feels like their heart is pulling them in a different direction than what they are currently doing. “I’ll be cutting hair until I’m 70,” she says with a smile, her optimism and energy filling up my small space (and any room she is ever in!).

That same energy and positivity made Amy an incredible guest and makes her an even better hair stylist. I’m so grateful to not only have her on the podcast but to call her a friend.

24 Oct 202441 - “I thought this was just something you did for the people that you love” Knots RMT & Wellness with Taylor D.00:51:58

I had the pleasure of interviewing Taylor after a mutual friend insisted she was a must-have guest!

Recently relocating from Kitchener to Owen Sound, Taylor is an accomplished RMT, Certified Reiki Practitioner, and Certified Meditation & Mindfulness Teacher. She launched her business at just 23 years old in 2014, quickly becoming a leader in her field in Kitchener. After spending many childhood summers in Grey/Bruce, she always knew this region would eventually be home—and in 2024, she made the move and hasn’t looked back.

Our conversation was such a joy! Taylor arrived with an infectious smile, and our chat felt like reconnecting with an old friend. Her drive and success are sure to inspire young (and old alike) entrepreneurs.

And I just want to drop that I think businesses looking to bring mindfulness and meditation into the workplace, and to their employees should definitely reach out to Taylor for her expertise.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Let it inspire you to chase your own dreams!

06 Dec 2024 50 – “You’re allowed to be different and write your own story” – Captured by Cadence with Cadence O.01:01:23

I absolutely love this episode!

At just 15 years old, Cadence’s teacher recognized her talent for photography and encouraged her to turn it into a business. She began by capturing photos of her friends behind the school, which quickly grew into photographing weddings, families, birth announcements, and more. Now 18 and freshly graduated from high school, Cadence has chosen a different path than her peers—staying in Grey Bruce to run her own successful business while many of her friends headed off to college and university.

Cadence is wise beyond her years. She exemplifies the power of investing in yourself, carving your own path, and trusting your instincts. Despite facing questions about skipping post-secondary education, she confidently follows what feels right for her and her business, with a clear vision for where she’s headed.

Her story will undoubtedly inspire listeners of all ages—whether they’re just starting out or have years of experience. Cadence is truly excelling in her craft, and it’s impossible not to be amazed by what she’s accomplished so far and what lies ahead.

01 May 202430 - The Detour Co00:54:48

The Small Towns, Big Dreams Podcast

Hosted by Beki Waples

Rebecca gave me TWO body butters for a giveaway! See Instagram/Facebook on May 2nd for details, or forward your newsletter sign up to smalltownsbigdreamspodcast@gmail.com. Giveaway closes May 17th. Rebecca O. established the Detour Co in 2022, after searching for natural skincare products in her new home in the Muskoka, unfortunately she was unable to find what she was looking for. Recognizing this gap in the market, Rebecca took the initiative to craft a skincare brand aligned with her values of eco-conscious, and all natural, while also creating the family life she had long envisioned. Rebecca has devoted her effort and research to deliver an eco-friendly, 100% natural skincare line to Canada. Her infectious enthusiasm, ambition, and commitment to quality ensures that The Detour Co will become the preferred choice for individuals seeking a personal touch in their skincare routine.

My conversation with Rebecca left me thoroughly inspired to dream bigger than I have been. Enjoy listening.

**Throughout the podcast, I mistakenly refer to her location as "the Muskokas" several times. Rebecca does clarify that this is not the correct name. I apologize for the oversight and will use the term "Muskoka" going forward.

14 Jun 202436 - Larkspur Books01:08:10

A few months ago, Kim reached out to me with an inspiring dream: to start her own business. Fast forward to today, and we're recording on location, from her beautiful new bookstore, Larkspur Books, in Southampton.

I had an incredible time talking with Kim. Her passion for her journey was contagious – who doesn’t want to start a business where you get to spend your time buying and reading books? And then helping others find their new favourite book too!

During our conversation, Kim shared the ups and downs of starting a small business, the importance of community collaboration, and the joy of connecting with local authors. She also celebrated the vibrant small business community in Saugeen Shores, and shared her vision for Larkspur Books - a hub for book lovers and community events.

This is a great episode for anybody who needs that little push to get their own thing started.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. And if you're in the area, be sure to visit Larkspur Books and grab a book or two (If you want to read the book It, I suggest grabbing it from here!).

30 May 202434 - BMKC Canada01:00:13

**Giveaway being posted May 31st on Instagram @SmallTownsBigDreamsPodcast

Shawna was a huge inspiration for this podcast, and I’m so excited that we finally got to sit down and chat! She was one of the originally planned guests, but she’s been unbelievably busy with all her many hats – Caterer, Market Manager, Chef, and Kitchen Designer (just to name a few). But we finally caught up this month, and it was worth the wait!

Shawna hails from the bustling city of Toronto but now calls Port Elgin her home, proudly dubbing herself a “small-town girl who grew up in the city.” She’s worked incredibly hard to get where she is today, and she’s got some exciting projects in the pipeline. She shares fantastic advice on starting out, taking things slow, seizing every opportunity, and growing at your own pace.

In our chat, we dive into her catering business, her amazing BBQ products, and all the local markets and events she’s involved with. Plus, she shares how much she loves small-town life and being a part of the Bruce/Grey community.

If you spot Big Mama at one of the markets this summer, be sure to tell her you heard her on the podcast! In the meantime, grab some of her mouth-watering sauce (my personal fave is the OG Owen Sound Gold, but they’re all incredible), fire up the BBQ, and get ready to be inspired!

16 May 202432 - Chicken House Press01:06:20

Back in 2016, Alanna Rusnak stumbled upon a big problem in the book world: small-town writers, like Alanna, were having a tough time getting their stories and work out there. So, what did she do? She decided to tackle the challenge head-on and started her own little publishing company called Chicken House Press.

At first, Chicken House Press was all about getting Alanna's own book out into the world. And it worked! Her novel went on to become a Canadian bestseller, a finalist for the Kobo Emerging Writer Award, and named one of the top reader-recommended books of 2017 by CBCBooks.ca!

And Alanna didn't stop there, she turned Chicken House Press into a full-blown publishing powerhouse, helping writers from all corners of the globe share their tales with the world.

In our chat, Alanna shares everything you need to know about getting your book published. And our talk was so inspiring, she's all about motivating you to start putting those words down on paper, no matter where you're from or what kind of story you want to tell. So, if you've ever dreamed about writing something – whether it's a novel, an essay, or even just a blog post – this episode is your go-to guide for getting started.

16 Nov 202446 - “You get to be your Best Self here” Camp Celtic with Tim M.00:59:12

I’m calling this a “bucket list” interview because it was an interview I’ve been excited about for a long time. I’ve known Tim for as long as I can remember, and he’s been a constant presence through so many memories—from listening to “he shoots, he scoreeeesss” during a Strat-o-Matic Hockey game, spending several summers working in the camp kitchen, getting together for family hang outs at their place, and now, sitting down for this interview. Tim has always stood out to me as a role model for entrepreneurship and creativity.

It was an absolute honor to hear Tim’s story in his own words—from his childhood, to the origins of the camp, to how it’s evolved into what it is today. Whether he was strumming his guitar by the campfire, driving the bus, or literally selling camp experiences in people’s living rooms like a Tupperware party (yes, really!), Tim has always embraced the challenge of wearing many hats. His journey is filled with humor, resilience, and a deep passion for making a difference, and it’s one that will resonate with anyone.

If you’ve ever been to Camp Celtic for a summer of magic, you’ll love hearing about the heart and hustle behind it all. And even if you’ve never experienced summer camp yourself, Tim’s story is packed with inspiration, motivation, and the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that will leave you feeling fired up and ready to chase your own dreams.
