Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

Today's episode is part 2 of my conversation with co-founder of Northern Epics, Trinidad Collier.

In part 2 Trin and I dive more deeply into the philosophy and values behind his business; we talk about what it is like working with friends and family; Trin tells the absurd story of a night in the Alaskan backcountry involving a 130 lb pack, a lost Garmin, bogs, cliffs, and more...; we talk about the value in taking risks and embracing failure in a meaningful life; and a whole lot more.

If you enjoyed part 1 with Trin, you don't want to miss part 2.

05 Jan 2025EP 22: Crafting Thrutopia, Any Human Power, and Mapping Possible Futures with Manda Scott (Part 1)00:49:39

Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

Today's episode features part 1 of my conversation with Manda Scott. Manda is an award winning author, contemporary shamanic teacher, and host of the Accidental Gods podcast based in the borderlands between England and Wales. Perhaps best known for her Boudica: Dreaming series, her life and work have spanned many other creative and purposeful ventures. These include: work as a veterinary surgeon, acupuncturist, regenerative smallholder, columnist, homoeopath,  blogger, life coach, and renegade economist, to name just a few!

In this half of our conversation Manda and I discuss her most recent book, Any Human Power, and the new genres of "thrutopian" and "mytho-political" that the novel falls under. As we careen ever closer to climate catastrophe and socio-ecological breakdown, Manda believes writers - and especially those in the realm of fiction - have a powerful role to play in mapping out possible futures and the steps through to them from the world we find ourselves in right now.

Using her new novel Any Human Power as a touch-point, our conversation extends far beyond the bounds of the story line. Manda and I explore...

  • the concept of "initiation culture" vs "trauma culture"
  • drawing inspiration from author Ursula K. Le Guin
  • the definition of "thrutopian" and "mytho-political
  • why fiction writing is important to envisioning and building towards a healed world
  • whether it's possible to shift a dysfunctional system while operating from within it
  • the vision that led Manda to write Any Human Power
  • ... and a whole lot more

Many of the books/researchers/resources that Manda references in this conversation can be found linked below.

15 Sep 2024EP 14: Mountaineering in Mongolia, Receiving the Fulbright, and A Life of Intention with Anna Fatta (Part 2)00:47:23

Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

This episode features part two of my conversation with biochemist, artist, climber, and world traveler Anna Fatta. In this one we talk about Anna's year in Mongolia on the Fulbright Scholarship; we talk about an epic mountaineering trip she planned and executed while there; Anna dives more deeply into what drives her to do all the things she does and what living a life of intention means to her; and so much more!

A clarifying note from Anna: "In this episode, I state that I do not expect to live until I’m eighty. This does not mean I believe I will die at twenty-four, or anytime in the near future. However, I do not believe the next fifty years are guaranteed to me. Each year is a gift, and I hope to experience as many years as I can, improving the chances of doing so with attention to risk and care for safety in all my endeavors."

22 Dec 2024EP 21: My Friends Interview Me - Navigating Fear, Magic Wands, and Falling In Love With A Place00:49:11

Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

This episode is a little bit different! It felt like it was about time I did an episode where I shared a little more about myself; I have received feedback from a number of people wanting to hear more about me on the podcast, so this one is for y'all.

I wanted this episode to be a fun and interesting listen, so I invited three of my closest friends on to ask me three questions each. They were entirely in charge of coming up with questions that they were excited to ask, and for the most part I did not know what the questions were going to be until we were rolling. Because these three friends know me from different contexts and in such different ways, the conversations we ended up having were all entirely unique!

In no particular order, we talk about:

  • a health scare in 2023
  • what I would do with a magic wand
  • my favorite memory from a day in the Tetons
  • learning the Irish language and connecting to culture
  • what I would never want to change about myself
  • expressing emotions freely and in-the-moment
  • my favorite album of all time
  • ....and a whole lot more.

I am so grateful to Sally, Amanda Jo, and Cole for joining me in co-creating these conversations, and for bringing their wonderful personalities to the show. It was such a joy to bring this one to life.

Thank you so, so much for being here - and please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know what you think of this format. I always love your feedback.

Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

This week's episode features a conversation with a childhood friend of mine, Zane Eddy. Zane reached out to come on the podcast, and challenged me with some really thoughtful discussion topics!

In this episode we talk about mental health and some of our own experiences overcoming mental health challenges; we talk about some of our "keys to wellbeing"; we discuss spirituality and Zane's journey to finding a meaningful spiritual practice; and we close with a really thoughtful exploration of the power of belief.

As always, thank you so much for being here!

09 Jun 2024EP 7: Seeking Meaning, Becoming a Middle School Teacher, and the Origins of The Village School with Andy Traisman (Part 1)00:59:31

Hello, and welcome back to the Shadows Run Podcast!

Today's guest is Andy Traisman, a former middle school teacher and a friend and mentor to many. Andy taught my 7th and 8th grade Homeroom and Humanities classes at The Village School, a K-8 Waldorf-inspired public charter school in Eugene, Oregon.

This episode is part 1 of our conversation - this conversation was just too rich to pack into one episode! In part 1 we talk about Andy's childhood growing up in the Chicago suburbs; life as a "seeker"; Andy's unlikely and circuitous route to becoming a middle school teacher; and the origins of The Village School, amidst so much more.

Part 2 will be released two weeks from today!

Feel free to reach out to the show directly at shadowsrunpodcast@gmail.com, and thank you so much for joining us!
