Dr Radhika Thakrar is in her first year of paediatric training in South London. She graduated from Imperial College London in 2018 not really knowing what to specialise in, but fell in love with paediatrics during her F2 year. She shares her journey on Instagram and YouTube (@DoctorRadhika) to show medical students what it’s really like to be a doctor, with the real highs and low, because she had no idea what to expect. She also loves trying to keep house plants alive, cooking vegan dishes and going on long walks around London.

Exploring his mindset and journey from studying medicine to becoming a leading consultant at the world famous GOSH, where he currently holds the world’s largest experience in the separation of Craniopagus Twins. 

We discuss the importance of learning, mentorship and the demands of a career in Medicine. Mr Jeelani shares some of the difficulties he has faced in his career including complex surgical cases, media attention and operating in foreign countries. We end by identifying the opportunities and satisfaction medicine provides are endless.

Mr Jeelani is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He was ranked in The Time’s Magazine’s top 100 surgeons in the UK in 2011 and the top 100 paediatric specialists in the UK in 2012. He was Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at GOSH from 2012 until 2018.

He invented CranioXpand, a cranial spring distractor system in 2008, and later on established FaceValue. In this week’s episode we talk to Abdel, a final year medical student from UCL who shares his journey into medical school and Google. Tune is as we discover his passion for coding and how early mornings and long hours was the key to founding a startup which was incubated at Facebook. We discover how a highly competitive internship at Google finally made him realise how much he loved the role of a product manager, as he now embarks on his new career path. Abdel shares with us the moment when he nearly lost the opportunity to do an MSc in computer science and the steps he took to eventually secure a place.

Tom Watchman is a newly qualified GP working in the Greater Manchester area. He studied medicine at the University of Manchester, where he also gained a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters degree in medical education. He stayed in Manchester for his foundation and GP training, and used this time to complete the MRCP (UK), DCH and DRCOG diplomas. Since finishing his foundation training, he has built Zero to Finals from an idea to a widely used educational tool. He spends almost all his free time creating educational resources to help people study medicine.

He is accredited in both General Practice and Public Health Medicine alongside NIHR Senior Investigator. He played an international role in public health and primary care as co-director of the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior to moving to Imperial College London, he worked for seven years at the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This week we are joined by Dr Kaye, a GP and renowned author who shares with us her journey from the very beginning in what is a very touching episode. We delve into her career as a GP, celebrated author and TV personality. Dr Kaye shares with us a frank and honest account of her personal journey since being diagnosed with cancer and the many struggles and difficulties she has faced as a mother, partner, daughter and clinician. We delve into her life as a patient, dealing with the unknown, attending consultations and undergoing multiple surgeries whilst also practising as a GP. This is such a wholesome episode with Dr Kaye discussing the journey form diagnosis to recovery. In the episode she also shares some advice for anyone else who may also be experiencing a life changing siutation like herself. We ended by sharing her new mindset, her coping strategies and the many strengths and traits she discovered about herself. 

Dr Philippa Kaye is a GP with a particular interest in children’s, women’s and sexual health. She has written multiple books including The M Word and she has a weekly column in Woman magazine as well as contributing to other magazines and newspapers. She has regularly been seen broadcasting on radio and television in programmes such as This Morning. She is the GP ambassador for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. Her days are filled with a mix of general practice, media work and her other job – being a mum!
