05 May 2023 | Laura Siddall - Who's on your team? | 00:48:48
What does it look like to build a team that you really trust? And how do you do that when you can't possibly know everything, and you have to lead from a place of humility? We speak to iron distance triathlete Laura Siddall about the importance of building a team that can help you achieve to your best. Laura is a professional iron distance triathlete, but came to triathlon later than most, at an age when most professional athletes are retiring and has drawn her learnings from stints in the corporate world, and a year in the British army. She's been able to take learnings from those previous life stages and apply and combine them to form a team around her that resulted in her placing in the top 10 in two consecutive Ironman World Championships. She's immensely passionate about women in sport, and we speak to her about what it was like for her growing up with sport as just a hobby and how that can be different now for young women considering a career in sport. Go Do: Our go do this week is to go and think about who you need on your team, whether that's just the people around you in your personal life, or perhaps it's a work, school or sports team. We have three categories of people to think about: Supporters, Sharpeners, and Sharers. We've put a worksheet together to help you! Check out the show notes on our website to download it, and take time to fill it in. This will show you where you might have gaps in your team - so if you do have gaps, then have a think about who could fill those, and where you might go to find them. We'd love to see how you get on! So send us a pic of your completed sheets, you can drop us a DM or tag us on instagram or linkedin, or send us an email: hello@runalive.co.uk Hosted on Acast. 12 May 2023 | Matt Guilder - The joy of the amateur | 00:46:14
Borderline obsessed with running? We've all been there - including our guest this week: Matt Guilder. Matt is a trainee vicar from Lancashire, and a keen (fast!) amateur runner. Despite growing up around elite athletes, (Dave Moorcroft used to come to tea) he started running a little later in life as a way to stay fit. He's had times of life when he's thrown himself into running to a level that was unhealthy and fed anxiety, but over time he's worked out how to get the best for himself out of running - finding joy through making friends, being himself rather than proving himself, being competitive, but keeping running the fun thing. In this episode we talk to Matt about how he checks out people's shoes before their faces, random shot put records on power of 10, the infamous Shropshire Country Steeplechase Championships of 2017, and the potential marginal gains of beetroot juice. There's some serious stuff in there too! Go Do: Our Go-Do this week is less of an exercise and more of a challenge. What are the communities in your life that you've neglected recently? Are there some people or places that you should visit or connect with this week that will refresh you and help get the balance and perspective back on life? If there are, go spend some time with them. We'd love to see how you get on! 26 May 2023 | Rohan Kallicharan - The true nature of resilience | 00:54:02
“If you get knocked over, get up again, that's a good starting point… but the true essence of resilience is: how do I do it different and better?” Many of us think about resilience through the lens of grit and tenacity to keep going. Speaking candidly about his struggles with his mental health and working through a toxic relationship with running, our guest this week, Rohan Kallicharan, pushes us to find a new perspective on how we reframe and rethink our problems. Having started running to get fit and have fun, he quickly found running became an obsession which took over his life; and when injury and overwork hit he was left burnt out and at rock bottom. This week’s episode gets to the heart of what the RunAlive podcast is really all about: how what you can learn through running can make you better at home and work, as long as you have it all in the right place. With honesty and insight, Ro gives us some practical help to overcome adversity, fall back in love with running, and aid our own recovery when life feels bleak. Go Do: This week for the Go-Do we have another worksheet available with 3 exercises that you can use to help you reframe challenges you face and find ways around or over them. Download it here. Welcome back to the Run Alive intervals. It was so good this week to have Martin Yelling on the show. And the full interview is so rich in content we could have pulled out any number of clips from it - but we were struck and challenged by the clarity Martin spoke with about his approach to coaching - and it something you can apply as a coach, or at work as a leader or manager - even at home as a parent, that approach where we’re more interested in the life of the individual than their stated goals. Help us cover some of the costs: buymeacoffee.com/runalive This week: We introduce Gill and Rohan to the podcast and we've been thinking about:
Win and fail of the week
Our guest this week: Mario Fraioli is a Bay Area-based running coach who works with a number of Olympic Trials-level marathoners, top ultrarunners, and competitive age-group athletes. He also writes and publishes the morning shakeout, a weekly email newsletter and occasional podcast that covers running and other topics that interest him. Summary In this episode, Mario shares how running serves as a powerful lens through which he views and navigates life. He opens up about the evolution of his relationship with running, which began in high school as a way to stay fit for basketball but has since grown into a lifelong passion that shapes his approach to coaching, personal growth, and self-discovery. Key Takeaways: Coaching as Holistic Development: Mario emphasises that coaching goes beyond physical training—it's about nurturing the whole person. He aims to understand how running fits into an athlete's life and help ensure it occupies a healthy space. Curiosity as a Driver for Growth: Mario highlights curiosity as a motivating force. Rather than comparing himself to his past achievements, he remains curious about what he can accomplish at his current stage in life. Knowing When to Quit with Confidence: Mario talks about the importance of quitting when something isn’t working, framing it as a positive and brave choice. He sees it as essential for avoiding unnecessary suffering and reevaluating one's approach. Thank You: Thank you for tuning in! Please subscribe, leave a review and share! 22 Oct 2024 | RunAlive Interval: Champs times have got quicker | 00:21:14
Are you enjoying the podcast? Help us cover some of the costs: buymeacoffee.com/runalive In this first RunAlive Interval of Season 4, Ro, Gill, and Ed dive into something that's made a few people quite upset: the recent changes to Championship and Good For Age qualifying times for both the London and Boston Marathons. We explore how these changes are impacting runners at various levels—from club runners to those chasing lifelong goals. Gill shares her personal experience with the championship start, and we ask whether major marathons should be looking to be inclusive or exclusive. Is this a natural progression given the advancements in running technology, or are marathon organisers moving the goalposts unfairly in the middle of a qualifying window? We reference Kara Goucher and Des Linden's podcast on Boston Marathon times which you can find here Thank You: Thank you for tuning in! Please subscribe, leave a review and share! Are you enjoying the podcast? Help us cover some of the costs: buymeacoffee.com/runalive This week Ro is away, so Ed and Gill are holding the fort and reflect on
Win and Fail of the week
Our Guest this week: James Thie is the head coach at Coopah, as well as a senior lecturer and Performance advisor for Athletics at Cardiff Metropolitan University. A former International middle-distance runner, who was a finalist at World, European and Commonwealth championships. To add to this, a multiple British champion and sub 4 minute miler both indoors and outdoors. Not done with running into his 40’s, he’s a 4 World masters champion & recent World masters record breaker. Summary: We chat to James about the life-changing impact of running, from competing to coaching athletes at all levels. He reflects on the importance of perseverance, belief, and community, emphasising that the greatest victories often come from personal growth rather than race results. Whether it's pushing limits, overcoming setbacks, or finding joy in running with others, James sees running as a lifelong journey. Key Takeaways: Running is a lifelong journey – It's not just about race results, but about continually pushing your limits and discovering new strengths over time. Community is essential – The relationships and support systems built through running are as important as the individual achievements, providing motivation and joy along the way. Perseverance and belief are key – Success in running, as in life, comes from having self-belief and the resilience to overcome setbacks, learning from challenges to keep moving forward. Key Takeaways: Forge Your Own Path Carla took an unconventional route and followed her instincts rather than a traditional path. She shifted from triathlons to long-distance runs—and eventually became a professional runner—shows that everyone's journey can be unique and inspired by passion rather than just competition. The Power of Community and Joy in Running Carla finds motivation and resilience through the community of friends she trains with, illustrating that running isn't a solitary pursuit. Sharing the experience makes it more enjoyable and helps maintain a positive mindset, especially during challenging training or races.
