Some movies were blockbusters at the time, but when you watch them now, you wonder what people were thinking. In a new series of videos we’ll be trying to do once a month, Linsay and Genevieve break down movies that would never get made nowadays. First up, is 2004’s “Troy,” starring Brad Pitt. Boy oh boy does this movie have problems. First of all, for a movie that claims to be based on the epic poem “The Iliad”, (something virtually every child had to read in high school), it completely failed to follow said book. Written by David Benioff, perhaps after re-watching this, the abysmal final season of Game of Thrones makes more sense. Disney/Marvel has been a bit hit and miss lately with their shows and movies. Ms. Marvel hit it out of the park. Linsay and Genevieve loved it. The teenage feel was fun and refreshing, the focus on friend and family and community reminded us what’s really important in this day and age and diving into a culture that is rarely seen portrayed in film and tv was handled perfectly. All in all the show is fun for the whole family and we can’t wait to see Kamala Khan in her next outing.

Linsay and Genevieve dive into the nitty gritty of the legal document and the accusations of discrimination based on gender, sexual harassment, sexual assault and the over arching issues of toxic masculinity and frat boy culture that continues to permeate the gaming industry and community. Linsay and Genevieve are so excited to be joined by Chad Michael Collins. You know him as Brandon Beckett in the SNIPER film series and as Alex/Echo 3-1 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. A self-proclaimed “accidental” actor, Collins made his way west to Hollywood in pursuit of a public relations career after majoring in Journalism at Ithaca College. He eventually discovered acting while continuing to work as a publicist in the entertainment industry, ultimately transitioning into his new career: playing pretend for a living. Linsay and Genevieve are back from San Diego Comic-Con and diving into Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+. They broke down the first few episodes last month, but with the show being over they wanted to take a deeper dive. The verdict? The show would have been better served had it been a two hour movie. The acting was great, but there was a lot of padding, unnecessary scenes, questionable character motivations and inconsistent uses of the force. But of course this is just our opinion. We all have to start somewhere in our DND careers. Join our guests, Heath Harper and Thor Knai as we ask them about their first experiences playing D&D and DMing.

Marvel’s Moon Knight on Disney+ has come and gone and we’re left with…well…not much. Linsay and Genevieve didn’t hate it but they also didn’t love it. All and all, it didn’t leave much of an impact at all. Were it not for the stellar acting, they would have probably given up. The show starts off pretty slow but then gets a little more interesting towards the end. The only thing to really come out of it is our hope that we get a Scarlet Scarab spinoff.

Disney’s Encanto has been out since November, but it continues to make headlines and for good reason. After faltering with a few of the previous animated features, Disney nails it with this feel good family musical. Disney paid particular attention to authenticity in this film, having a slew of female and Latina writers, directors, producers, composers and consultants. Bringing on Lin Manuel Miranda to compose chart topping hits that blew Frozen out of the water was the icing on the cake. With strong female protagonists, fantastic voice acting, gorgeous animation, attention to the smallest detail and songs that will be happily stuck in your head for weeks, Encanto is a movie that just about anyone can enjoy. If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check it out when it drops on Disney+. Fingers cross the Academy Awards recognize what a stellar achievement the movie was.

Let’s get our game night on with Lincoln Damerst and Nikki Pontius from Board Game Geek as we discuss which games are must-plays in 2021.

Linsay and Genevieve are back with their analysis of movies that just don’t work in the modern era. In this episode, they break down 1985’s Weird Science. You’d never know this came from John Hughes, who made his name with the classic high school films The Breakfast Club and 16 Candles. The movie fell flat at the time, with critics tearing it apart, but went on to become a cult classic. When looking at the movie through a 2022 lens, all those problems are still there with even more that would make it completely inappropriate for a modern audience. Haphazard writing, female objectification, racial stereotypes and of course thinly veiled pedophilia. There have been rumors of a reboot over the years, but we say, let this one fade into history. This isn’t a story we need or want in a modern era. We did get a pretty sweet theme song from Danny Elfman’s Oingo Boingo and got to see Robert Downey, Jr in his early years.

Horizon Forbidden West might have been delayed a bit due to COVID, but it was well worth the weight. In this episode, Linsay and Genevieve the game mechanics that not only improved upon Horizon Zero Dawn, but could be a game changer for other AAA games. The biggest update is its climbing mechanics. They successfully managed to innovate where other games haven’t. They’ve added a few new tools, the pullcaster grappling hook and the Shieldwing glider. There were updates to fast travel and the skill tree.The game is good at pacing and giving Aloy access to special abilities and tools that are all tied to the narrative in some way. The fighting style was updated with elemental weapons and improved human enemies, not to mention mounted combat. And with underwater exploration, Aloy can explore parts of the world that were never before possible. And as always, the voice acting is superb and the writing is compelling.

Zombies, betrayal and the potential destruction of Wakanda.What a ride. As you saw in our past episode, Linsay and Genevieve were less than thrilled with episodes 3 and 4 of Marvel’s What If…?. They’re back to break down episodes 5 and 6 with special guest Tyler McPhail of The Grand Geek Gathering. The general consensus - Not too Shabby. In celebration of Trans Day of Visibility, we're talking about the amazing LGBTQ homebrew game Dream Askew with creator Avery Adler and player Austin Klich.

This episode was a special live edition for LA Comic Con. During our panel, we took a deep dive into what it will take for women and female identifying people to be equally represented in geek entertainment. While a lot of progress has been made on screen over the past decade in Hollywood, when you get to geek entertainment like action, sci fi, animation and video games the statistics are abysmal. And the number of women in the writer’s room and director’s chair is even lower. As the success of films such as Black Widow and games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Lara Croft show, female led titles can be successful and profitable. But they are still few and far between and face constant push back from video game publishers and entertainment execs. And a discussion about female equality can't be complete without also discussing queer representation and racial and ethnic diversity in geek culture. After COVID delays and eager anticipation, season two of The Witcher on Netflix is finally here. As you know, Linsay and Genevieve are big fans of the show, the books and the video games, so they dive deep. Season two draws heavily from Andrzej Sapkowski’s second book, Blood of Elves. but there were quite a few deviations from the original source material. Some of those deviations we loved and others (as much of the internet) we had questions about - the death of a beloved character, the creation of a new baddie, accelerating Ciri’s training and changing a bit of her backstory and the less than imposing fighting skills of the other Witchers. But all in all, we enjoyed this second installment and can’t wait for the next. As always, spoilers ahead. Netflix’s Arcane, based on the League of Legends universe from Riot Games, is one of the best animated shows of all time. That’s what Linsay and Genevieve think at least. The story, writing, voice-over acting and Fortiche’s animation were all fantastic. If this is the future of adult animation, we have high hopes and can’t wait for season two. A lot of people were skeptical when they heard Kevin Smith was going to reboot “Masters of the Universe” for Netflix and a small (but loud) corner of the internet felt he did a disservice to He-Man and were mad that there was a greater focus on the female characters. But Genevieve and Linsay loved it. With Revelation, they took the opportunity to explore stories that hadn’t been told before, rather than rehashing tired old He-Man stories. And they gave us some badass female characters. The art and writing paid homage to the original, while updating it for a modern audience. The voice acting was stellar (is there anything Mark Hammil can’t do?). Halo on Paramount+ is finally here. Derived from the hugely popular video game, the show is being billed as Paramount’s answer to Game of Thrones (though at a measly $90mil for the season it’s less than half the budget of Marvel’s Disney+ shows). And despite all the comparisons to The Mandalorian, Linsay and Genevieve...didn’t hate it. They loved the introduction on the rebel planet. Not only did they give all of the characters (even background) personality with their appearances, but they also got the audience thinking from the beginning, “Who are the good guys here?” Quan was hands down the stand out performance of the show. The sound design is fantastic and we firmly believe that Master Chief taking off his helmet made sense to the story and the character (sorry gamer diehards, FPS just doesn’t work or a TV show). The CGI and production design for the most part were pretty great, though the Spartan CGI does get jerky at times, especially when they run, making it pretty obvious when they switch from CGI to an actual person. We would have loved to see Master Chief as Master Chief a bit longer before he breaks ranks and takes off with Quan. The writing wasn’t bad, but we are curious as to where the story is heading. The first episode was a bit cliche. We’re hoping it doesn’t take us down The Mandalorian, Lone Wolf and Cub route. While the show wasn’t great, it has us intrigued enough to keep watching (unlike The Book of Boba Fett...sorry, I know I promised no more BOBF references)

Linsay and Genevieve are so excited to have the amazing Davy Perez on the show this week. Davy is currently a Co-Executive Producer on the upcoming series, STAR TREK: Strange New Worlds. His previous credits include the longest running U.S. Sci-Fi series, SUPERNATURAL, and the Emmy Award Winning AMERICAN CRIME. He is also an alumni of the Disney/ABC Writing Program. We talk about his longtime love of Star Trek, tabletop gaming, Magic The Gathering and D&D. Davy was born on Halloween night in East Los Angeles to a large Mexican American family. The son of an immigrant, entertaining classmates in school would lead to Davy attending the Playhouse West Repertory School where he began his creative studies with a focus on acting. Davy taught drama at the Los Angeles Music & Arts School, played guitar with local garage punk bands, and worked in Creative Development at ABC Studios and Universal Cable Productions. In 2013, Davy was selected for a NALIP/HBO Latino Writer Fellowship and was a participant in the 2014 Disney ABC Writing Program. Davy is married to producer Amanda H. Perez and they share a lovely home with their two sons.

Marvel’s Eternals might be dominating the boxoff, but it’s also the first MCU film to be awarded a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes and there’s a reason for that. Despite some fine acting, engaging fight sequences and elegant cinematography, the film as a whole was bloated and baffling. We felt all two hours and 37 minutes of it. By introducing 10 new characters all at once, we have no time to get to know or care about any of them. Their storylines were woefully inadequate and the amazing actors they cast weren’t able to shine. The amount of exposition thrown at the audience is both overwhelming but also insufficient to adequately explain over 7,000 years of history. We know it’s setting us up for sequels, but the movie would have been better served as either a Disney+ show or if they introduced us to a few characters at a time in solo movies or as cameos in other MCU films or shows. Disneyland’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge has been open for a few years now, enough time for the kinks to be worked out and Rise of the Resistance to finally open. While Linsay and Genevieve are huge Star Wars fans and the production design of the land is breathtaking, they feel that it was a huge misstep. Disney saw the success of Universal Studio’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and tried to create their own version, but unfortunately they fell short. With a focus on consumerism rather than experiences, the land is a huge money pit with not much to do. They also set it in the time period of Episodes VII-IX, a trilogy that didn’t perform well with fans and doesn’t allow for the nostalgia of classic characters like Han, Leia and Luke. Luckily, Avenger’s Campus seems to have remedied some of the issues plaguing Galaxy’s Edge. We take a deep dive into the issues surrounding Galaxy’s Edge, what they could have done better, the ever rising costs of attending Disneyland and the overall issues facing employees who work there.

The first two episodes of Marvel’s “What If…?” had us excited and enthralled (watch our previous episode about it), but episodes three and four have us asking...WTF!!!! What is Marvel thinking with these two episodes? Join Linsay and Genevieve and special guest Morgana Ignis as they break these two down. While the cosmic horror of Doctor Strange is interesting once it gets going, we just don’t buy the plot. Strange is so arrogant and narcissistic this alternate reality just doesn’t make sense. Seeing the fridging of Christine so many times is not only uncomfortable but unforgivable. Her character was already misused in the movie (sorry Rachel McAdams) and now they aren’t even trying to hide the fact that she’s simply a plot device. In both of these episodes, the characters act so out of character it’s jarring and the lack of female representation continues to be hugely problematic. WTF Marvel?! WTF?!

Season 3 of Picard stars of in fascist world, but thankfully we’re quickly transported back to 2024 Los Angeles. Thanks COVID for this change in filming having to keep us in LA due to travel restrictions and for Patrick Stewart’s need to be essentially alone on a green screen. But unfortunately, the change in scenery didn’t do anything to help with the writing and story. It’s still doesn’t feel like a fully fleshed out TV show. Where the first two episodes we got no political commentary, episode three seems to give us all the political commentary and in less than five minutes. It seems like they’re doing it just to do it. We don’t know how much COVID changed the storyline (if at all).If it wasn’t for the strong acting, we probably would have given up on this show already. Marvel’s Hit Monkey on Hulu went largely unnoticed, highlighting the problem Disney has in placing their content on Hulu rather than Disney+. While Hit Monkey is definitely rated R, it is a perfect illustration as to why Disney+ should expand to included rated R content. Hit Monkey was a fantastic series and it’s a shame more people didn’t know about it. While based on one of Marvel’s more obscure properties (following a monkey assassin), Linsay and Genevieve loved the show. The animation kept the feel of the original comic book source material, the writing was a perfect blend of emotion, comedy and action and the voice-over acting was spot on - Fred Tatasciore almost brought us to tears with his Monkey sounds and the character of Bryce seemed to have been written just for Jason Sudeikis. If you were one of the many people who missed this show we encourage you to check it out.

Season two of Picard is here. While season ended with mixed reviews from audiences and critics, the show is seemingly Paramount+’s equivalent to “The Mandalorian” as they attempt to create an expanded Star Trek universe to compete with the Disney+’s Star War universe. But is Sir Patrick Stewart enough to keep viewers invested in the show? Linsay and Genevieve dive into episode one to try and answer some of those questions. There were some things they liked and some things they found concerning. the premiere started off slowly - relationships emerged out of nowhere, cameos seemed to serve only nostalgic purposes, the writers were constantly beating us over the head with the fact that time would be the focus on the season, the contrast between seasoned film actors and those who’ve spent their careers on primetime television is pretty stark. Overall, there was a lot of pizzaz but not a lot of substance, despite Sir Patrick acting his little butt off. Hopefully things will pick up as the season goes on.

You thought DMing was hard? Try it with two! Join us tonight with Dustin Fletcher and Devan Henderson as they explain how they make the magic happen on their show D4.

WTF?! That’s what went through our minds as we were watching the cluster f@ck that was Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop. As lovers of the original anime, we had a hard time figuring out just what they were thinking with this live action re-make. The script was shallow and disconnected, the characters were mere stereotypes rather than flushed out people, the sets looked thrown together and cheap and they just couldn’t figure out the tone and genre for the show. It was missing the heart and relationships that made the original anime so beloved. Despite all that, the actors did a great job with the less than stellar material they had to deal with. Daniella Pineda especially slayed as Faye Valentine. But unfortunately, a small cesspool of the internet decided to spew their vitriol at Daniella and the show creators for the alterations to Faye’s costume and appearance. Linsay and Genevieve have no patience for this type of toxic masculinity. Despite all the show’s many, many (many) shortcomings, the outcry over Pienda’s Valentine (arguably the best character in the now) not being sexy enough was disgusting and we have thoughts. Anime is an art form that should not be adapted into live action form. It just doesn’t work well.

We were going to wait until Season 1 ended, but we were so excited about the first two episodes of Marvel’s Hawkeye that we decided we needed to do a special episode about them. Overall, we really enjoyed the opening of the show. Marvel pulled a lot from Matt Fraction’s award winning run of the Hawkeye comic books. We love Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop and hope that Marvel will be using her to set up the West Coast Avengers. We also enjoyed the introduction of Echo as the big bad, even though she’s associated with Daredevil in the comics, and can’t wait for her spinoff show. And the nodd to Clint’s hearing loss and the use of ASL was also a nice addition. But we would be remiss if we didn’t also point out what we didn’t like. And of course, the giant elephant in the room is just how much of an influence David Aja’s art had on the show and his complete lack of recognition or payment by Disney. Not only did they pull panels directly from the Fraction comics for the promo art and some of the scenes, but also the color schemes, typology and overall feel of the show is directly ripped from Aja’s work. From a storytelling standpoint, what’s up with Clint’s family? In the comics Clint has no family, so the series had to quickly figure out a way to get rid of them. They prove to be nothing more than a plot device, which leads us to think that this is the beginning of the end for Clint Barton in the MCU unless they kill off his family. Q is back with a vengeance and we find ourselves in a dystopian new future. Boy oh boy does it feel like the writers are taking us down a story path that has been done before. It’s the Man in the High Castle in Space. It’s Mirror Mirror 2.6. Ulike OG Star Trek, those are not the problems we’re facing in the modern world. What’s the lesson, don’t be a fascist? People are literally dressed like Nazi troopers meets Star Wars imperial troopers and they have slaves. You’re telling me in the past few centuries the entire planet put aside all their differences and banded to become one big fascist regime with slavery? We call bullshit. Why isn’t the show taking the opportunity to address the real, tangible problems that we are dealing with in the modern world. We’re so confused. Tune in to see all our thoughts.

Marvel’s “What If…?” is over and for those who might not know, not all the big celebs returned to voice their iconic characters, including Robert Downey, Jr. So who picked up the mantle of Tony Stark/Iron Man? It was none other than the amazingly talented Mick Wingert. Linsay and Genevieve had a blast talking about his career as a performer and a teacher.

You may know him as Po, the panda on the new “Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny”, Iron Man in “Marvel’s What If…?”, or as Slappy, the deranged ventriloquist’s dummy in “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween”, but these are just the tip of the iceberg. In 2019, Mick added the villainous roles of Cain Madhouse in Crunchyroll’s first english dubbed anime, “To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts” and Buena Festa in Funimation’s dub of the  feature film, “One Piece Stamped” to his roster of franchise heroes and villains. Additionally, Mick can be heard as such iconic characters as Taruga in “Fist of the North Star: Paradise Lost” [Atlus Games], Vigilante on the fifth season of “Arrow” [CW], TMNT’s Raphael in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan” [Activision], and as Mr. Slugworth in “Tom & Jerry: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” [WB Home Ent.] He has also performed in such animation and video game properties as “Spiderman” PS4 [Insomniac Games], “Red Dead Redemption II” [Rockstar Games], “Batman: Assault on Arkham” [WB Home Ent.], “Elena of Avalor” and “Sofia the First” [Disney Jr.], “Titan Fall 2” [Bioware], “Breadwinners” [Nickelodeon] “T.U.F.F. Ah, Wonder Woman 1984….was…...interesting. Who are we kidding?! It was a cluster-f*$@ of a movie. Linsay and Genevieve have been promising to break it down and they finally bit the bullet. They go through all the elements they felt made the movie such an epic failure: the confusing tone, constantly changing theme, dangerous messaging, editing disaster, half baked VFX and the fact that they created a Wonder Woman that doesn’t act anything like Wonder Woman. Join us and let us know your thoughts on the movie.

Linsay and Genevieve dive into the first three episodes of The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+. Granted, there are several more episodes to come, but our first impressions of the show are less than complimentary. It was best described as The Last Samurai meets The Patty Hearst Stockholm Syndrome story. Disney kind of shot themselves in the foot (no pun intended) by releasing the Mandalorian first and absolutely knocking it out of the park. Boba Fett suffers from trying to follow a similar style and genre and it just falls flat. From the lackluster writing, having two stoic characters headlining the show, not giving Fennec any backstory or decent lines, attempting to retcon the Tusken Raiders, trying to give Boba a reason to stay on and care about Tatooine, the show is just a mess. Is he a compassionate crime lord or someone trying to clean up crime in Tatooine? We just don’t know. The creators seem to have a hard time deciding if this is a story about Boba Fett or a story about Temuera Morrison (who is fantastic by the way). We fear that the creators are hoping that nostalgia alone will keep fans interested, but honestly, that’s just not enough. We’ll see if the next few episodes pick up, but we’re not holding our breaths.

“The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” animated film is now on Netflix and Linsay and Genevieve were thoroughly impressed. They break down all the things they loved about the film: the amazing voice cast, great writing, understanding the politics of The Witcher, effective use of magic, excellent main villain, pretty good gender parity and improved representation. They also touch on some of things things they didn’t like as much, but overall, an excellent film for Witch fans and anyone who loves this type of adult animation.

Episode five of The Book of Boba Fett was everything we wanted from the show, an episode of The Mandalorian with no Boba Fett. It’s no secret that Linsay and Genevieve haven’t been loving The Book of Boba Fett and episode five perfectly illustrated all the reasons why. The Mandalorian has purpose, conflict, stakes, adventures. The writing is absolutely fantastic, plot development is solidly unpredictable, the acting is top notch and quite honestly, even the production design looked better. Whereas Boba Fett is like hammering a round peg into a square hole, The Mandalorian is an architectural wonder. It perfectly sets us up for season three, which can’t come soon enough. We think it’s time to just cut the ties on Boba Fett and let the show fade out into the twin sunsets and into obscurity.

Disney, we need to talk. We love all the strides you’ve made with female representation in the Marvel universe (you’ve gone above and beyond DC, which is a clusterfuck we’ll have to talk about another day), but we question just how long lasting these characters are? I know others have criticized you and started calling you the M-She-U, because of all the big badass ladies you’ve given us lately, but we have concerns. For every female character you give us, you seem to take her away just as quickly by either killing, canceling (we’re still bitter about the canceling of Agent Carter) or sidelining to a male character. With rumors spreading about the potential for a Moon Knight season two (despite the bland and uninspiring season one) we worry that a gem like Ms Marvel (which is your highest rated Marvel project on Rotten Tomatoes) won’t live to see another season. We know we’ll see Kamala Khan in The Marvels, but that project has been marred in concern for months. And let’s not forget all the upfront vitriol She-Hulk is getting before it even drops. After killing off Black Widow, Jane Foster (though she does have the option to come back) and Scarlet Witch, and completely sidlining Valkyrie (a fan favorite) and Lady Sif in Thor: Love and Thunder (and lets not forget the shit deal Christine has in Doctor Strange), we worry that the female characters in the MCU are much more short lived than their male counterparts. And let’s be honest, does Anthony Mackie really deserve his own solo movie as Captain America? He’s great as a sidekick, but struggles to lead projects, just look at the canceled Altered Carbon. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman and Brie Larson are rocking Oscar Awards. Just saying.
