18 Nov 2022The Rest Is...Strategic Communications In PR00:46:01

In the latest episode of The Rest Is...PR, Jacki and Lyle talk through another in the list of types of PR covered in the series - Strategic Communications. The discussion has a bit of a twist, however, as our hosts discuss strategic comms through the prism of a current affairs news story. Namely, the ongoing demonstrations organised by environmental protest organisation - Just Stop Oil. Using this example, Jacki and Lyle define what strategic communications means in the context of PR, how it is important to have a clear message and a call to action whenever you are engaging in this type of communication, and how despite their cause being extremely worthwhile and pressing, Just Stop Oil have demonstrated some shortcomings in terms of their messaging and overall strategy that may have caused more harm than good to their protests.

17 Feb 2023The Rest Is...Client Expectations & PR (With Patty Toledo)01:00:02

Jacki and Lyle are joined this week by the wonderful Patty Toledo. Patty is currently Head of Creative Community at Playsense, Head of Content at Steel Media, and a Women In Games Ambassador. She speaks 7 languages, 4 fluently, and she is one of the driving forces behind the success of the recent Pocket Gamer Connects event in London, and many others of its kind. She is also a great friend of Jacki and the Dimoso team as a whole. Patty chats to Jacki and Lyle about how best to manage client expectations. In an insightful discussion, Patty discusses how some clients arrive to agencies with lofty expectations based on the shortcomings of previous partnerships, and Jacki mentions how hearing about the array of agencies a client has worked with, and ultimately ceased to work with, in the past can be a red flag when looking to get a working relationship off the ground. Lyle asks Patty whether the issue of client expectations runs alongside a wider of issue of how PR agencies are seen to fit into the company structure as a whole, be that as a service provider or a member of the core team, before Lyle name drops some of the incredible people Patty has worked with in the past, including Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Metallica, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger!

03 Mar 2023The Rest Is...Influencers & PR00:44:58

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a phenomenon that is growing exponentially across the globe - influencer marketing. Becoming an influencer is becoming an increasingly desirable career, with both the financial and reputational rewards on offer appealing to the younger generation in particular. But just what do we mean by an 'influencer'? What are the different types of influencer, and what type of influencer should businesses be looking to approach to market their own products? In this intriguing discussion, Jacki discusses how her own children have been influenced by influencers, using the example of KSI and Logan Paul's release of their viral 'PRIME' energy drink, and outlines how it can sometimes be more effective for businesses to look to smaller-scale influencer marketing in order to increase brand awareness. Lyle opens up about his own experience of both knowing and interacting with influencers himself, before continuing his attempts to invite the great and the good of the chosen industry onto the podcast - by extending invitations to KSI, Logan Paul, and even Mrs Hinch!

10 Mar 2023The Rest Is...Startups & Starting Your Own Business00:48:08

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a topic which is very close to their heart - starting your own business. In a wide-ranging and open conversation, both Jacki and Lyle open up on their own experience of the wild world of startups. Jacki talks through her journey from working in a startup business, and learning from her employer, to setting up her own company and watching it grow exponentially at a remarkable rate. She then outlines her passion for startups and small businesses, with Lyle agreeing that SMEs are very much the lifeblood of any economy. Jacki discusses the difference between working for a larger organisation and a startup business, and Lyle opens up on his own experience of setting up a theatre company and the parallels that can be drawn between that and a PR startup in terms of preparation, a solid business plan, and relationships with potential clients. Finally, our team discuss just how important it is for any new business owner to value what they provide and create, and how sometimes this can mean turning down opportunities if that sentiment isn't being reciprocated.

17 Mar 2023The Rest Is...Ads, Apps, & Intel In PR (With Ksenia Yurkina)00:51:19

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by Ksenia Yurkina, Head of Marketing at Apptica. Apptica, based in Nicosia in Cyrpus, is a Mobile Ad Intelligence and Market Analytics Tool that provides accurate data on over 10 million apps worldwide. In a wide-ranging episode, Ksenia discusses her career so far and what made her shift from working for a luxury hotel company to the world of ads, apps and tech in her role with Apptica. Jacki and Ksenia talk through what good looks like when it comes to results in the marketing industry, and Lyle asks what challenges Apptica looks set to face as the products they work with become more complex due to advancements in technology. Finally, Ksenia explains current trends within ads in apps, including the advent of fake ads by some app developers, and the team are joined again by a special guest...the one and only Ludo!

24 Mar 2023The Rest Is...Gary Lineker vs. The BBC00:40:20

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a topic that gripped the nation earlier this month. That's right - The Rest Is PR has its say on Gary Lineker vs. the BBC. In a compelling episode, Jacki discusses what her strategy might have been had she been the one advising the BBC, and also throws her hat in the ring to do just that should the same situation arise again! Lyle outlines his views on the subject, and whether this is a line in the sand when it comes to the use of social media by employees of any organisation, and Jacki talks through the importance of organisations of all sizes having a clear plan and precise messaging in order to ensure all of their employees pull in the same direction. True to form, Lyle invites the likes of Alastair Campbell (of The Rest is Politics fame), Tim Davie, and even the man himself, Gary Lineker, onto the podcast!

31 Mar 2023The Rest Is...Graduates & Recruitment00:48:03

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss one of the biggest topics in the business world - recruitment. In an open and intriguing episode, Jacki discusses her first job and how she still looks back on it as a career highlight, as well as how university wasn't always the plan before some sound advice from her father. Lyle opens up about his brilliant experience with the Young Shakespeare Company, and how it was also his dad who gave him the impetus to head to university himself. Both Jacki and Lyle discuss the importance of university, not just in terms of academia but also the life skills it teaches you along the way. Jacki outlines the differences, both good and bad, that she has seen between university graduates and those straight out of school, and Lyle uses a typically stretched analogy when comparing business experience to what type of car you learn to drive in! Finally, Jacki teases an incredible story about her being the youngest person ever to hold a bank account at her local branch, and how it led to an involvement in an episode of Crimewatch!

06 Apr 2023The Rest Is...VR, XR, & Live Events (With Selen Lun)00:43:31

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the wonderful Selen Lun, professional artist, performer, creative, and founder of both the Lun Family Company and live virtual and extended reality events company XREventIst. In a wide-ranging and intriguing episode, Selen talks about her career journey so far, and how the Covid pandemic led to a change in direction from a career in performance and the theatre to her current work in the VR and XR industry. Selen also discussed how the Lun Family Company was founded, and how it became an organisation that encompassed all of her creative output in one place. Jacki quizzes Selen on how an NGO like XREventIst, which provides free live VR and XR events for anyone interested in this exciting new technology, is able to sustain itself financially, and Lyle discusses the importance of adapting to these technologies, such as VR and AI, rather than fearing them and slowing them down. At the very top of the episode, Jacki, Lyle and Selen also offer a timely reminder that the recovery efforts in Turkey, Selen's homeland, continue in the aftermath of the tragic earthquake earlier this year. 14 Apr 2023The Rest Is...Crisis Preparations & PR00:53:12

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the crucial and at times explosive topic of crisis preparations in PR. In an ironically thinly prepared chat due to the busy nature of both Jacki and Lyle's schedules, and with Jacki recording live from an office in the midst of renovation and refurbishment, our hosts talk through what it means to be prepared for a crisis and how to piece together a clear and efficient strategy. Jacki outlines the number one rule for anyone looking to construct a crisis preparation strategy, which includes above all ensuring that everyone knows their job and is up to date on the messaging of your organisation at any given time. The analogy klaxon is in full swing as Lyle compares the simplicity of successful messaging to 'Slowhand' himself, Eric Clapton, before Jacki goes one better in surprising Lyle with an excellent football analogy, outlining the importance of clear and calm communication within your own team in times of crisis. ITV's management of the Holly and Phil Episode and the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 are brought up as examples of crisis preparations that didn't necessarily result in effective crisis management, before Lyle delivers a clear message on anyone wishing to use Liverpool's demolition of his beloved Manchester United as a further example of poor crisis preparedness.

21 Apr 2023The Rest Is...Growing Your Business & Securing New Business00:38:05

This week, having recently covered the incredible broad topic of starting your own business, Jacki and Lyle take it one step further. You've set your business up - now it's time to grow that business! In a wide-ranging and insightful episode, Jacki and Lyle open up about their own experiences of expanding their business and the successes and difficulties they have encountered. Jacki mentions how, before the advent of new technologies, business growth used to be entirely based on word of mouth, and those core tenets of preparedness, clear messaging and a strong vision appear once again. Lyle and Jacki also discuss the importance of PR within business growth and how it should be at the heart of any business in their opinion. Jacki discusses her own experiences of accepting large-scale clients and how that adversely affected the flow of her business at the time, with Lyle using one of his famed sporting analogies to back this up, ultimately leading to him inviting Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom on the podcast! Both Lyle and Jacki share their own advice when it comes to business growth based on their own experiences, and Jacki finally tells the Crimewatch story!

28 Apr 2023The Rest Is...Interviews & Interview Technique00:34:59

This week, Jacki and Lyle embark on the much anticipated Interview Technique episode! In an incredibly informative and open discussion, Jacki and Lyle discuss their own experiences of interviews, both in terms of being interviewed and being the interviewer. Jacki analyses the importance of body language in an interview, and how all an employer wants to see in an interview situation is the applicant being the best version of themselves they can possibly be. Lyle opens up on his experiences of both interviews and auditions, and the similarities between the two, before Jacki and Lyle convey a hugely important tip - interview them as much as they are interviewing you! They discuss the importance of being interested in the industry you are applying for a position within, and the difference between interest and enthusiasm in an interview, with the latter being something anyone can express without really meaning it. Lyle also reminisces about his own interview at Dimoso!

05 May 2023The Rest Is...Client Relationships & New Strategies (With Sam Patchett)00:44:33

This week, Jacki and Lyle welcome the wonderful Sam Patchett to the podcast. Sam is one of the founders of Profile - a new London-based PR agency specialising in Executive Profiling - where he is now also the Client Director. Sam previously worked as a press secretary and political advisor in his native New Zealand, before moving into PR there with SweeneyVesty. Sam later moved to the United Kingdom, where he moved into corporate comms with Aegon and Grayling. Sam chats to Jacki and Lyle about how Profile came into existence, as well as the importance of having a solid and open relationship with your clients in any area of PR. He discusses the importance of being able to challenge your clients on certain elements of their strategy and messaging, before Jacki asks the unenviable question of how to deal with a client whose message you don't believe in! Jacki discusses the dangers of social media when building your profile, with reference to a story involving a close friend of hers, before Lyle asks Sam about his thoughts on the future of PR with direct reference to the use of AI in the industry. A brilliant episode concludes with some excellent networking skills demonstrated by Sam and Jacki as a potential partnership is floated!

12 May 2023The Rest Is…Private Members Clubs & Their Role In Business Marketing (With Andrew Richardson)00:49:39

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the brilliant Andrew Richardson - Managing Director of the Home House Collection. In an interesting and insightful episode, Andrew discusses his career journey, from globetrotting chef, to operations manager, to his position today as Managing Director of the fantastic Home House Collection - a collection of two private members clubs situated in the heart of London. Home House, the first to be established, is an award-winning members club designed by George III's architect in the 18th century. Home Grown was established in 2019 and is designed with entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders in mind.

Andrew discusses the importance of these clubs when it comes to networking and business marketing, and Jacki outlines her own experience of being a founding member of Home House as a result of her work with Richard Farleigh, an early investor in the business. Andrew outlines the importance of clubs such as Home House having a clear purpose, before he describes his experience of running the club during the Covid-19 pandemic - a timely reminder of its impact considering the recent World Health Organisation announcement that the global disaster can now be considered 'over'. Finally, Lyle reveals his plans to become a member...and promises not to break the club's one golden rule!

19 May 2023The Rest Is...Investor Relations & PR Development (With Scott Fulton)00:50:47

This week, Jacki and Lyle record a much anticipated episode. That's right, listeners - this week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by none other than Scott Fulton. PR professional. Investment analyst. Investor relations executive. And, crucially...Lyle's dad! Scott trained as an economist, and entered stockbroking in the City of London in 1988 as an equity investment analyst working at Credit Commercial de France (CCF). He later worked as an equity analyst at UBS, Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch and ABN Amro, earning a place in Extel’s Top 5 analysts in the Building & Housing sector between 1995 and 1999 Scott later moved into Investor Relations with the likes of Financial Dynamics and Citigate Dewe Rogerson, before setting up his own company in Blackbox Analytics.

In an extremely entertaining episode, with no amount of banter aimed in Lyle's direction, Scott discusses his career to date, his work as an analyst and in investor relations, and the changes to the editorial function in the UK over the last 2 decades. He also outlines the importance of not only knowing your audience, but performing differential analysis on these audiences to determine how they behave after receiving information. Jacki uses examples from the gaming and tech industry to evidence these excellent points, before Scott uses a marriage analogy that may well have left Lyle scarred for life! Finally, Scott asks the question 'What sense have we lost in speed?', a fresh interpretation of T.S. Eliot's famous quote 'Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?'

26 May 2023The Rest Is...Diversity, Representation & Career Progression (With Sophia Aubrey Drake)00:47:52

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely incredible, inspirational Sophia Aubrey Drake. Sophia is a transgender woman currently living in Japan, where she is studying Japanese alongside her work in the games industry. Sophia has had a remarkable career. She initially worked for GAME and EA, and has been a languages teacher, a video games specialist at the National Video Game Museum, and a PR & Partnerships Manager in the past. She is now a freelance video game writer and indie game publishing scout, as well as being Developer Relations Manager & Evangelist at Steel Media, host of the Big Indie Pitch, public speaker, event manager, and everything in between at her very own Sophia Aubrey Drake Consultancy. Her incredible professional life is matched by her inspirational personal journey.

In one of the most open and informative conversations on the podcast so far, Sophia discusses how she got into the games industry, and how her love of Pokémon, Smackdown, and Knights of the Old Republic among others inspired her to pursue a career in the games industry having originally studied psychology! Sophia opens up on her transition journey, including how she came out on stage while hosting the Big Indie Pitch, the challenges she has faced within the industry, and any advice she has for anyone going through a similar experience. Jacki discusses her own recent experience of certain prejudices, and Lyle is in awe throughout as Sophia opens up on her remarkable story. Finally, Sophia discusses how despite the fact that created media is becoming a lot more representative, public representation of the transgender community, and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, is going backwards. She discusses how it is important that people understand that she, like many other trans people, just wants to be treated like a normal person, and how she would love it if trans people were turned into NPCs in games!

Sophia refers to an article in The Guardian that tells the story of her transition journey, which can be found here: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/nov/10/female-feminisation-surgery-trans-woman-story-of-a-face

02 Jun 2023The Rest Is...Freelance PR & The Art Of Pitching (With Connor Mitchell)00:45:59

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the wonderful Connor Mitchell, a freelance PR and communications consultant, and outright pitching extraordinaire! Connor made his name as one of the industry’s best coverage-getters. Having previously been the UK media lead for pan-European, high-growth tech agency, Tyto, after joining as one of the earliest team members, in July 2021, he decided to go it alone as a media relations specialist for B2B technology agencies and brands. In an extremely interesting episode, Connor starts out by telling us about his incredibly busy day before we even went live, with two of his clients having appeared on Ian King on the morning of the recording! Connor later discusses his passion for media relations, as well as his top tips and tricks when it comes to pitching, including ensuring your subject line is both memorable and informative, and embracing the lost art of the phone call to a journalist! Lyle asks Connor about the training sessions he provides to PR professionals when it comes to the art of pitching, before Jacki outlines her plans to involve Connor in some sessions with the Dimoso team!

09 Jun 2023The Rest Is...Phillip Schofield: The Fallout (Part One)00:42:30

This week, in Part One of what is the first ever double-bill for the podcast, Jacki and Lyle discuss how ITV, Phillip Schofield, and Holly Willoughby handled the feud between the iconic presenting duo. This episode was recorded immediately after it was announced that Schofield was leaving ITV's flagship daytime television programme, This Morning, for what at the time appeared to be fairly ambiguous reasons relating to his strained relationship with Willoughby behind the scenes. What transpired was a far bigger story, and one which compelled Jacki and Lyle to record a second episode that is being released alongside this one! In Part One, Jacki outlines her view that this scandal should never have been allowed to have gone as far as it has, and Lyle analyses why, given the facts available at the time, it made more sense for Phillip Schofield to leave than Holly Willoughby. Finally, Lyle puts his and Jacki's names forward for the position of This Morning hosts!

09 Jun 2023The Rest Is...Phillip Schofield: The Fallout (Part Two)00:52:11

In Part Two, Jacki and Lyle discuss the latest revelations surrounding Phillip Schofield and his exit from This Morning. Not long after recording what is now Part One of this double header, Schofield released a statement in which he revealed that, during his time working on This Morning, he had been involved in an 'unwise but not illegal' relationship with a young man working on the show. It was alleged that Willoughby had no knowledge of this relationship. After the release of his statement, the scandal surrounding Schofield and this young man became the number one news story across the UK, with national newspapers, radio stations, and 24-hour rolling news programmes focussing in on the relationship itself, allegations about Schofield's behaviour, and ITV's role in the whole situation. It later came to light that ITV had conducted an investigation into the events, before Schofield took part in a BBC interview last Friday with respected journalist Amol Rajan to clarify the information in his statement. In a wide-ranging and at times uncomfortable interview, Schofield discussed the fallout from the events of the last few weeks, dark thoughts he had been having, the nature of his relationship with the man in question, and he also claimed that ITV's investigation amounted to a few questions to both parties and seemingly nothing more. ITV's Director of Strategy was called before Parliament to explain their handling of the situation, and Holly Willoughby's first speech after returning to This Morning left a lot to be desired. There was so much to discuss, and Jacki and Lyle got stuck into all of it!

16 Jun 2023The Rest Is...4 Out Of 5 PRs Are Abysmal At Their Jobs! (With Charles Orton-Jones)00:44:30

4 out of 5 PR professionals are abysmal at their jobs. That is the view of this week's fantastic guest, Charles Orton-Jones, who joins Jacki and Lyle for - as the title suggests - an extremely interesting chat! Charles is the Founder & Editor of Business Age, an online publication specialising in entrepreneurship and revolutionary business thinkers. He is also a business journalist, specialising in entrepreneurship and small businesses, and has previously been the editor of EuroBusiness magazine and deputy editor of Real Business magazine. He has also written for the likes of The Guardian, Financial Management, and the CBI's magazine, Business Voice, and he won the prestigious PPA Business Writer of the Year award in 2006. In a wide-ranging episode, Charles breaks down his view, citing the lack of excitement in the industry compared to the madness of Fleet Street several years ago, the absence of passion, creativity and fun that goes into contemporary content writing (possibly as the result of the collapse of English Literature as a degree at British Universities), and how PRs are scared to push back with their clients. Charles emphasises his enthusiasm for PRs, and how important they are to the modern-day business landscape, before offering some great tips on how they can improve. These include making one point per article, the use of dynamic photography in any piece of written content, and writing a piece as if you were writing to entertain friends of family to actively engage with your target audience. Charles and Jacki share stories of their previous experiences in the journalistic space, including an unbelievable tale involving one of Charles' former colleagues and his work in Hong Kong! All this alongside some outstanding references to the likes of the Guardian's Marina Hyde, James Marriott and Simon Cooper at The Times, and Charles' personal writing hero, Adrian Chiles, and this episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their PR practices!

07 Jul 2023The Rest Is...Media Training (With Guy Clapperton)00:46:54

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely wonderful Guy Clapperton. Guy is the founder and owner of Clapperton Media Associates, a media training and mentoring business which has been helping people get something out of their media engagements, whether on video or in written interviews, for over 20 years. Guy also has over 30 years in the press industry, having previously been the Deputy News Editor for Microscope, and the Managing Editor for Intelligent Sourcing Magazine, as well as writing regularly for The Guardian. On top of all of this, Guy is also a keynote speaker, event MC and podcaster in his own right, and he is also the author of several books including 'This Is Social Media' (2009), 'This Is Social Commerce' (2012), and 'The Smarter Working Manifesto' (2014). In a wide-ranging and insightful episode, Guy opens up about his incredible career to date, including how he began his work in media training and the expansion of his team at Clapperton Media Associates. Guy also analyses the importance of honesty and authenticity when appearing before the media. He and Jacki both discuss how crucial it is for clients to understand the need for journalists to tell a story, with both providing excellent examples of how clients don't actually realise what the big story is! Guy uses a brilliant Sat Nav analogy to explain how clients should approach getting there message across, while Lyle mourns Manchester City's recent Treble-winning success, and ruins the plot of Romeo & Juliet for Guy in the process!

14 Jul 2023The Rest Is...Stakeholder Management & Football Fan Engagement (With Kevin Rye)00:58:48

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the fantastic Kevin Rye. Kevin is the founder of Think Fan Engagement, which publishes the annual Fan Engagement Index and the Fan Engagement Pod. It advises clubs, organisations and brands on their relationships with fans, strongly advocating a culture of listening. Kevin's career in football began as an activist fan of Wimbledon FC/AFC Wimbledon. He subsequently worked for Supporters Direct and SD Europe, advising fans, clubs, governing bodies and government, as well as leading on PR and policy for the organisation. Since 2015 he has been a consultant to clubs & fans, and he is currently doing some work for Bristol Rovers Football Club among others. In an episode that, it's safe to say, Lyle was very excited about given his passion for football, Kevin discusses the complexities of stakeholder engagement and management, and its cousin, fan engagement, and how football clubs are constantly striving to do more to engage with their member communities. Jacki outlines how football 'clubs' are exactly that - clubs - and analyses the differences between these organisations and the likes of Dimoso and other businesses. Lyle laments the continued impact of money in the football industry and how it can sometimes lead to fans being ignored in favour of more commercial decisions, before Kevin offers examples of good fan engagement within the industry, and what Think Fan Engagement will be looking to do in the near future.

21 Jul 2023The Rest Is...Drinking & Our Relationship With Alcohol00:47:33

This week on The Rest Is...PR, Jacki and Lyle discuss a subject they have been keen to cover for quite some time - drinking, and our relationship with alcohol. In an open and incredibly insightful and vulnerable conversation, Jacki and Lyle both discuss their own experiences of alcohol throughout their lives. Lyle opens up about a recent set of circumstances which led to him taking a break from drinking for a month, and the transformative impact that will hopefully have on his life and his relationships with his friends and family. He also analyses how he is becoming more aware of the impact that his family members' experiences have had on his own journey. Jacki discusses her own history with alcohol, including her experiences of the intense drinking culture within the industry she worked in, and how initially giving up for one month led to three months, six months, and ultimately where she is now years later. Both discuss the importance of being open and honest with yourself and those around you, before Lyle emphasises that, whilst there are differing extents to which people go through issues surrounding alcohol, each and every one of them is valid and worthy of support.

28 Jul 2023The Rest Is...Huw Edwards & The BBC Presenter Scandal00:49:12

This week on The Rest Is...PR, Jacki and Lyle discuss a news story which has dominated the public consciousness and generated no end of hostile speculation and rumour. Namely - the BBC Presenter Scandal, and the revelation that the individual at the heart of the story is renowned BBC News presenter Huw Edwards. The episode begins with Jacki describing a terrifying experience she went through recently, where her dog Ludo came to her aid to chase an intruder out of her house! In one of the more curious segues in The Rest Is...PR history, our hosts move from one immoral and questionable act to another, admittedly less criminal one, in the form of the Huw Edwards scandal. Jacki and Lyle outline the allegations facing Edwards, before comparing the BBC's response to that of ITV when faced with the crisis surrounding Phillip Schofield. Jacki discusses Tim Davie's performance in front of the media, and how impressively he fronted up to the crisis, before Lyle analyses the impact this situation might have, or indeed SHOULD have, on how these stories are reported in the future. Jacki and Lyle conclude with the important notion that we should always consider the unseen human impact of vilifying certain individuals, regardless of what they have done and their relative reputations, with references to another TV personality in the spotlight currently - Dan Wootton.

04 Aug 2023The Rest Is...Making An Impact & Building Confidence (With Esther Stanhope aka The Impact Guru)00:56:23

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely phenomenal Esther Stanhope, otherwise known as The Impact Guru. Esther is a keynote speaker, and the award-winning author of the incredible 'Goodbye Glossophobia: Banish Your Fear Of Public Speaking', as well as an experienced BBC broadcaster & founder The 80% Perfect Club. She is known throughout The City as The Impact Guru, a phrase coined by Deloitte when she worked with them previously. As the Impact Guru, Esther has helped FTSE 100 Firms make an impact, win pitches, and perfect the art of public speaking and networking. In an informative and, quite frankly, extremely uplifting episode, Esther discusses her own confidence journey, and how she came to establish The 80% Perfect Club, a confidence coaching program which has been utilised by a number of high profile organisations, in January 2022. She analyses how her performing arts studies, something she shares with both Jacki and Lyle, have informed the work she does today, including how she always preferred to be the director rather than the actor when studying herself! Esther gives Jacki some tips for her upcoming wedding speech, which leads to a superb anecdote from Jacki about her lovely soon-to-be husband, and Lyle asks Esther about her experiences working with the likes of Vanessa Feltz, Alastair Campbell, and even Boris Johnson while working for the BBC! There's even time for Esther to share some fantastic stories, including interviewing George Clooney, and partying with fellow journalists whilst waiting for Madonna to arrive to a press junket!

11 Aug 2023The Rest Is...The Future Of PR - The Influence Of AI & New Technologies00:44:52

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a topic that is becoming increasingly significant as new technologies come to the fore - what does the future hold for the world of PR? In an intriguing and informative conversation, Jacki outlines how a brilliant conversation with someone she mentors led to her wanting to discuss how the PR industry will evolve in the future, what skills PR professionals will need, and the influence of new technologies on the communications industry moving forward. She emphasises how the landscape of the comms world continues to change and develop, and states that she would never have dreamed of releasing weekly podcasts when she was starting out in the industry several years ago. Lyle then asks the question as to whether advancements in AI, the advent of Web3, and computer-generated content have made working in the industry easier of harder, with Jacki providing an answer that may well surprise you. Everything from ChatGPT, the Kardashians, the Writer's Guild of America Strike, and brand new roles for AI professionals is covered in this wide-ranging look at what the future holds for the PR industry. In the immediate future, it is also noted that this is the last episode before Jacki gets married, with a massive The Rest Is PR congratulations sent her way during the episode!

18 Aug 2023The Rest Is...Web3 & Communications (With Camilla Purkis-White)00:48:38

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the wonderful Camilla Purkis-White, who happens to be the latest member of the exceptional Dimoso team to appear on the podcast! Camilla is the Metaverse Marketing & Gaming Partnerships Director at Dimoso, and she is also a Digital, Content & Social Marketing Director in her own right. She has previously worked for the likes of Dove, COTY Beauty, McDonald’s and many more of the world's most iconic brands, and she has previously been a guest lecturer at the University of Greenwich. Camilla is also the host of the Web3 for Good Podcast, and as such she imparted some fine podcast wisdom on our illustrious hosts during this episode! Camilla also offers an excellent description of what Web3 and Blockchain actually are, with reference to the term 'Web3' being coined by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood in 2014. Camilla discusses the importance of embracing new technologies such as Web3, Blockchain and the Metaverse, or risk being left behind in the industry, and Jacki and Lyle ask what these new technologies mean for the world of PR & Communications. Finally, Lyle extends the offer of advertising space on the podcast for any major brands who might be looking, and Jacki comes up with an exceptional idea for some innovative McDonald's Happy Meal offerings!

25 Aug 2023The Rest Is...GB News & The Rise Of New Broadcast Media00:37:35

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss something which, as Lyle mentions very early on, the duo have flirted with discussing for some time now. Namely - the broadcasting enigma that is GB News, and the rise of new, somewhat provocative broadcasting platforms. In an incredibly interesting episode, Jacki discusses how, for all the controversy surrounding it, GB News is a station that she has admiration for due to their success in getting their messaging and branding absolutely spot on. Lyle analyses how the likes of GB News, Talk TV, and LBC on the radio have been able to attract the big names they have over the last few years - including the likes of Eamonn Holmes, Nigel Farage, Andrew Neil and more - citing a possible desire to leave the heavy moderation and increasing fragility of the likes of the BBC and ITV. Lyle emphasises a number of times that this is not a political podcast (despite the political nature of some of the topics covered!) before both Jacki and Lyle pitch themselves for possible cameos on any of the above TV and radio stations!

01 Sep 2023The Rest Is...Nigel Farage vs. Coutts Bank00:37:41

This week, our dynamic The Rest Is PR duo tackle a story that dominated headlines in the United Kingdom towards the end of July, and has continued to spark debate as it has rumbled on. You guessed it - Lyle and Jacki get stuck into Nigel Farage vs. Coutts Bank! In an episode that takes one or two surprising turns, Lyle opens up with an admission that while he is by no means Farage's biggest fan, either in terms of his politics or his occasionally incendiary personality, the action taken by Coutts to close his account on political grounds has to be deemed unjust and unfair. Jacki poses the interesting question - what exactly are values of a bank, and how many people have ever actually asked their bank what these should be? Lyle analyses the affect this crisis has had on NatWest, where Coutts forms part of its wealth management division. He discusses how a conversation between NatWest's Group CEO Dame Alison Rose and BBC journalist Simon Jack resulted in the BBC reporting the reasoning behind the account closure was liquidity related and not political values motivated, and how the mishandling of this crisis ultimately led to Rose's resignation and a significant knock to NatWest's share price. Peter Flavel, Coutts CEO, was another casualty of a poor crisis communications strategy, which is analysed in depth by Jacki in a wide-ranging episode!

08 Sep 2023The Rest Is...Luis Rubiales, Mason Greenwood, & The Problem With Football Communications00:51:11

This week, Jacki and Lyle are back and discussing an industry that has dominated the global news agenda for all the wrong reasons over the last 3 weeks. That's right, it's time to talk about THAT moment after the Women's World Cup Final, and the behaviour of the now suspended President of the Spanish FA - Luis Rubiales. In the first recording after her incredible wedding day, Jacki discusses how football clubs and international organisations alike have consistently failed to set adequate parameters for their employees, meaning however common-sensical the choices are, situations such as the Women's World Cup Final continue to occur. As the episode moves on, attention turns to Mason Greenwood, and the fallout from some very poor crisis communications by Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs on the planet, and our very own Lyle Fulton's beloved football side. Lyle discusses how, despite conducting an internal investigation that seemed to last an eternity, Manchester United's messaging continues to be very muddy indeed, while Jacki analyses what exactly Greenwood being found 'not guilty' means for his future career. Recently sacked Spain Women's coach Jorge Vilda, popular sports publication The Athletic, and even Roy Keane all get a mention in our duo's first episode since Jacki's wedding - it's good to be back!

15 Sep 2023The Rest Is...Inclusion, Diversity & Belonging In The Workplace (With Chloe Davies) 00:58:53

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely incredible Chloe Davies. As Lyle's introduction to Chloe in the episode suggests, she really has had an incredible career so far. She is a global inclusion and belonging consultant, a chef, and an entrepreneur, as well as being an incredibly committed campaigner for inclusion and equality across all spaces. Chloe is also a member of Badassery, a private global community that empowers unconventional thought leaders to push boundaries, magnify their influence and spread their life’s passion, and the WACL (Women in Advertising & Communications Leadership). In September 2021, she took on a first of its kind role in becoming the Head of Social Impact for Lucky Generals. On top of all of this, she's an Ambassador for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), a Director of the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre Project, and the founder of ‘It Takes A Village’, a collective for Black women in advertising, media & marketing. A Campaign 2023 40over40 honouree, a 2023 BBDA finalist, and one of LinkedIn’s Top Voices in 2022, it goes without saying that Jacki and Lyle were in great company this week! In a wide-ranging and important episode, Chloe discusses how she went from working at Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus, to following in her parents' footsteps in moving into the fashion industry, becoming the youngest ever trainee manager at Peter Jones, aged just 17. She talks to Jacki and Lyle about what inclusion and belonging means to her, including how her work with Lucky Generals on ad campaigns with Amazon and Virgin Atlantic made her feel like everything she had worked on up to that point finally made sense. Lyle asks her how important the 'belonging' aspect of her work is, with Chloe emphasising it's importance by outlining the work she has done in establishing uniform practices at 9 airlines and counting that allow employees to feel comfortable and seen in the workplace, before Jacki and Chloe agree that, without putting a steak in the ground, it's impossible to see just how far the needle has really moved in terms of diversity and inclusion. There really is so much to love about this absolutely incredible episode, which includes how Chloe was able to secure an Adele exclusive for one of her ad campaigns, cameos from her 7-year-old son Miles and Jacki's dog Ludo, and Lyle often watching on awestruck at everything that he's hearing!

22 Sep 2023The Rest Is...Influencer Marketing & Accountability Online (With Hannah O'Donoghue-Hobbs)00:47:34

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the fantastic Hannah O'Donoghue-Hobbs. Hannah is a freelance Social Media Manager & Trainer, with experience in helping businesses put their best foot forward online. She has previously been the Social Media Coordinator at Cosatto, working to create and implement their social media strategy across the UK, Ireland, Spain and Germany, and prior to that she was a Digital Marketing Executive at the Fuller Research Group. She has also held roles at Manchester-based organisation Research Opinions, Access SUMMIT and The Co-operative Banking Group, and started her professional life as a care worker before moving into the world of social media and digital advertising. Hannah talks to Jacki and Lyle about her career so far, including how furlough during the pandemic had the unusual effect of spurring her to start her on to go freelance, including offering social media consultancy to local businesses. This led to her founding 'Hannah Is Social' (a name she isn't a massive fan of any more, but that we love!) Jacki praises Hannah for her ability to juggle her freelance career with being a full-time mum, and Hannah opens up about her appearance on GB News, where she discussed accountability online and Elon Musk's offer to cover legal fees for anyone sacked as a result of their activity on the platform 'X'. There is also an excellent story regarding Hannah not knowing she was in fact about to go on GB News! Lyle reveals his embarrassing obsession with rug-cleaning videos on Instagram, before professing that he feels like having a go at being an influencer himself!

29 Sep 2023The Rest Is...Russell Brand, Dispatches & Due Diligence00:38:50

This week, Jacki and Lyle delve into yet another scandal which has rocked the media and broadcasting world. In recent weeks, comedian, TV presenter, movie star and self-professed wellness influencer Russell Brand has been accused of sexual assault. Four women allege that Brand assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, a period where he was considered to be at the height of his fame. This was while he was a presenter for Channel 4's spin-off Big Brother programme, Big Brother's Big Mouth, produced by Endemol, before landing a prime slot as host of a BBC Radio 2 show alongside Jonathan Ross, and later appearing in several Hollywood films. These four women spoke to journalists from the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, who were working jointly on the investigation. Journalists working for these outlets also spoke to people who worked alongside Brand during his media career and who detailed their experiences of his attitudes towards women more generally. In this episode, Jacki and Lyle look at this situation from a slightly different angle. They focus on the due diligence businesses undertake before hiring their employees, and what more could have been done by these major broadcasters and film studios in terms of their own due diligence before hiring Brand. Jacki discusses her own experiences in this area, as well as the difficulty when it comes to adequate reference checks, and Lyle asks whether some businesses may now look to undertake retrospective due diligence in an effort to be as squeaky clean as possible moving forward.

13 Oct 2023The Rest Is...Laurence Fox, Calvin Robinson, & The Ava Evans Scandal00:40:47

GB News is once again in the spotlight, this time due to the controversial events surrounding Laurence Fox and his comments about political commentator, Ava Evans. This week, Jacki and Lyle digest yet another week of controversy for the broadcaster - a week which saw Dan Wootton suspended from the channel and dismissed from the Daily Mail, Laurence Fox suspended and ultimately dismissed from GB News, and Calvin Robinson, another GB News presenter, dismissed for his defence of Fox's actions. Jacki praises GB News for their decisiveness in the immediate aftermath of the controversy, and Lyle once again reaffirms his opposition to some of the output of the channel. Lyle discusses Fox's recent arrest for conspiracy to damage ULEZ cameras, outlining that it had seemingly been a particularly tricky week for Fox all round! Jacki and Lyle also discuss the issue of free speech, and whether GB News have found a formula other broadcasters should follow, before Lyle and Jacki discuss how they might advise Wootton, who remains suspended with the door seemingly open for a GB News return.

20 Oct 2023The Rest Is...David Beckham, The Media, & The Documentary00:47:57

This week, Jacki and Lyle digest one of the most watched documentaries of the year so far. You guessed - this week the podcast is talking about all things Beckham! The documentary, from filmmaker Fisher Stevens and available now on Netflix, saw a record-breaking 3.8 million viewers tune into it in its first week, and it has been performing similarly well ever since. Jacki and Lyle break down their key takeaways from the documentary, including Lyle's shock at Victoria Beckham's revelation that she told David she was pregnant the night before 'the kick' against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. Jacki discusses the extent to which Beckham was hounded by the so-called 'redtops' in the British press in the immediate aftermath of that incident, whilst also looking at how the media has changed since that period, and whether or not the likes of Harry and Meghan could take a leaf out of Becks' book when it comes to how he dealt with the press in the late 90s and early 2000s. Finally, Jacki and Lyle discuss how the documentary can be considered yet another PR triumph by the Beckham team, with particular reference to how they handled the scandal of Becks' alleged affair with assistant Rebecca Loos in 2003.

27 Oct 2023The Rest Is...Leadership & What Makes A Great Leader00:46:05

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a topic that they have occasionally covered in passing in previous episodes, but never fully delved into. Namely - what makes a great leader? In a brilliant and wide-reaching discussion, Jacki offers some context on why this topic was chosen. She describes the drama that has unfolded around video game software development giant Unity Technologies, creator of cross-platform game engine Unity, and their now former CEO and President John Riccitiello. Jacki describes how Riccitiello demonstrated poor leadership by not communicating clearly Unity's move to implement 'Runtime', which would mean gamers and developers would be charged a fee to play games hosted by the platform. This move angered employees and consumers alike, and led to Riccitiello's resignation and, ultimately, his retirement from the industry earlier this month. Lyle opens up on some of the research he has been doing around leadership, including a list of mantras that people are recommended to follow in order to be considered a strong and effective leader. He also joins Jacki in using, as ever, a series of football figures as examples of great leadership, including the likes of Gareth Southgate, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Roberto De Zerbi of Jacki's beloved Brighton & Hove Albion! Lyle finishes by again inviting Richard Branson on to the podcast, in the hopes of having the British business magnate on the podcast very soon!

03 Nov 2023The Rest Is...Death In The Blood - The Inside Story Of The NHS Infected Blood Scandal (With Caroline Wheeler)00:45:29

This week, Jacki and Lyle are delighted to be joined once again by published author and Political Editor of The Sunday Times - Caroline Wheeler. Caroline returns to discuss the release of her new book, 'Death In The Blood', which tells the story of the NHS infected blood scandal through the eyes of the victims themselves, with references to government documents and court transcripts from the scandal. In a compelling episode, Caroline outlines the extraordinary extent of the scandal, and the story of how she came to report on it right at the beginning of her journalistic career. Caroline has continued to report on this story throughout her career, from her days as part of the team at the Sunday Mercury in Birmingham, right the way through to her work with The Times and The Sunday Times, where 'Death In The Blood' has been serialised recently. She opens up about how a phone call from Mick Mason, one of the victims of the scandal, was the beginning of a journey that has seen her investigate the stories of thousands of other victims of this disaster, many of whom have now sadly died as a result. Caroline also discusses the toll writing the book has taken on her personally, particularly in the face of backlash from certain sections of the community affected by the scandal, and how she felt compelled to turn the book launch, which Jacki attended, into more of a campaign rally to bring the scandal to the attention of a wider audience. The likes of Andy Burnham, Penny Mordaunt, and Diana Johnson have all thrown their support behind a campaign for justice and compensation for the victims, with Burnham himself writing that the book 'should rock Whitehall to its foundations'. 'Death In The Blood' was recently featured in Waterstones' 'The Best Books of 2023: Politics' blog. An extraordinary story, and one which Caroline articulates incredibly in this very important episode.

'Death In The Blood' by Caroline Wheeler is available at all major book stores, including Waterstones and Amazon, and also as an audiobook via Audible.

10 Nov 2023The Rest Is...Web3, Crypto, & The Sam Bankman-Fried Trial (With Matthew Buxton)00:40:19

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely brilliant Matthew Buxton! Matt is the CEO and Co-founder of Mystic Games, a brand new game studio created in July last year that specialises in creating unique and exciting multiplayer mysteries. He has previously been the Game Design Director at both Rovio and MAG Interactive, and was also the Ideation Lead at the latter. Matt is a director, public speaker and Web3 enthusiast as well as being a design expert, and with over 18 years experience in the industry. In a brilliant episode, Matt discusses his own career path so far, from his time at Jagex and as a Senior Game Designer at Candy Crush developer King, to moving to Rovio and creating Mystic Games. Matt also analyses the fallout of the Sam Bankman-Fried trial, and what it means for the cryptocurrency, Web 3, and blockchain spaces. Bankman-Fried, founder of cryptocurrency FTX and former 'poster boy of crypto', was found guilty on seven counts of wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracy last week, and now faces up to 110 years in prison. Yet the Guardian reported that, at the time of the verdict, Bitcoin was trading at its highest price in a year, with Matt confirming that there is now renewed confidence among crypto investors that any fraudulent activity will be punished accordingly. The episode finishes with Matt stating that the same rules should apply to some of the major banks worldwide, before Jacki and Lyle get an update on what's to come for Mystic Games heading into 2024!

17 Nov 2023The Rest Is...Running An Agency (With Laura West)00:49:20

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely wonderful Laura West. Laura is the founder and one of the advisors at Agencywise, a platform where agency owners can meet, network with and learn from fellow professionals, whilst also getting access to experts from the likes of finance, law and the economy. She has over 20 years of experience in the PR and Marketing industry, with a particular focus on helping agency founders grow and scale their businesses. Laura is certified in Agile and Change Management, and has used these skills to assist her clients in the running of their agencies. She also runs several initiatives that support and connect agency founders, such as Collaboration Club and Mentor Me. In a wide-ranging and energetic episode, Laura and Jacki swap stories about parenting their teenage sons during the Covid lockdown, and Laura discusses how a frustration with continually explaining the perennial changes within the PR industry to her clients led to her returning from a career break in an advisory role instead of as an agency lead as she had done in the past! Lyle talks to Laura about the pride she has taken in establishing a close-knit community of agency founders through the creation of Agencywise, and how the creation of this platform was predominantly inspired by wanting to provide the help and support she wished she had herself when she was running her own agency. Lyle can then only listen on as Jacki and Laura plan the first of what will surely be many lunches over the coming months, if only to bond over their shared enthusiasm for leaving motivational notes in their sons' packed lunches!

24 Nov 2023The Rest Is...PR Confidential & Demystifying PR (With Amanda Proscia)00:41:36

Jacki and Lyle are joined this week by the brilliant Amanda Proscia. Amanda is the COO and Founder of Lightspeed Marketing & PR, a New York City-based agency focused on promoting innovation in areas like healthcare, financial services and consumer electronics. Before starting Lightspeed in 2013, she worked in a variety of other agencies and businesses, including American Express, Burson-Marsteller, and Interbrand. Her incredible level of experience and expertise in the industry has, perhaps understandably, led to Amanda fielding thousands of questions about public relations throughout your career. Amanda is also the published author of PR Confidential: Unlocking the Secrets to Creating a Powerful Public Image, a brilliantly entertaining and insightful look at exactly what PR is. In an incredibly informative episode, Amanda outlines why she decided to write the book, and why structuring it in a 'Dear Abby' style was crucial to making the book the book as educational and fun for professionals as possible. Amanda and Jacki both agree that often the problem for businesses is that they don't understand fully what PR is, while Lyle goes further and argues that by the time they know what it is, they're not altogether ready to engage with the PRs themselves! Amanda finishes the episode by telling you where you can access PR Confidential, including where you can get it for free on the Lightspeed PR website, before Lyle offers up his services for the audiobook which will be released early next year!

01 Dec 2023The Rest Is...Control, Altman, Delete: Sam Altman vs. OpenAI00:40:00

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the incredible situation that has emerged between OpenAI and their former, and now future, CEO Sam Altman! Our hosts discuss the details of what led to Altman's exit from the AI giant. They then open up on the remarkable fallout that occurred thereafter which included a revolt by most of the OpenAI staff over Altman's dismissal, an extraordinary intervention by key OpenAI investor Microsoft which included a statement of condemnation and them employing Altman and his colleague, Greg Brockman, to head up an 'AI research team' within their own organisation, and the subsequent reinstatement of Altman and Brockman to the OpenAI board as part of a seismic reshuffle that has seen those who were responsible for ousting Altman leave OpenAI themselves! Jacki discusses the parallels that can be drawn between Altman's leadership of OpenAI and the leadership demonstrated by Unity's John Riccitiello before his 'retirement', before Lyle analyses why it is important that C-suites within businesses make moves in the near future to add a Chief PR Executive to their team to avoid crises such as the one experienced by OpenAI recently being mismanaged as they have done!

08 Dec 2023The Rest Is...Media Manipulation00:37:10

Season 2 is here! The Rest Is...PR embarks on its second season this week, with Jacki and Lyle once again tackling some of the major issues of the day and analysing the PR elements of some of the big breaking news stories across the world. In the first episode of the new season, Jacki and Lyle discuss a topic which is becoming more and more prevalent by the day - media manipulation. Jacki discusses the recent controversy surrounding Omid Scobie's latest book, Endgame, where the Dutch release 'accidentally' named the two Royals allegedly at the centre of what Harry clarified as being 'unconscious bias' in his and Meghan's interview wit Oprah a couple of years ago. Jacki posits that this may well have been planted by Scobie's team in an effort to drum up publicity for a book whihch had lacked it upon release initially, in the latest example of media manipulation. Lyle brings up previous examples of media manipulation, including the famous 2001 notion by one government aide that September 12th would be a 'good day to bury bad news'. Lyle finishes the episode by encouraging the population to always be questioning what we hear from the so-called mainstream media, and Jacki discusses how the cycle of media moguls such as Rupert Murdoch may well be about to repeat itself. There's even time for Lyle to demonstrate the Swiss accent he had been using during his performances in Chichester!

15 Dec 2023The Rest Is...PR At Christmas & Business During The Holiday Season00:34:46

In the second episode of season 2, Jacki and Lyle are feeling festive! Well, they're certainly getting into the holiday spirit, and this week they discuss how PR professionals and agencies operate in the lead up to Christmas. Do they wind down or ramp up in the lead up to the big day? Jacki discusses the importance of providing 'evergreen' content for journalists over the festive period, and how acknowledging that they will be working hard over what is normally a designated holiday will make for a strong, empathetic relationship with them not just over Christmas but moving forward into the new year. Lyle discusses the importance of being specific in your preparations heading into the festive period as news and stories are now processed all over the world across a variety of different timezones, before Jacki opens up about when she first realised Christmas was destined to be her busiest period of time for the remainder of her career! There's also a teaser for next week's episode, where Lyle may finally reveal the identity of the host of his most recent gig!

22 Dec 2023The Rest Is...Michelle Mone & The PPE Scandal00:44:54

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the extraordinary interview Baroness Michelle Mone gave alongside her husband, Doug Barrowman, earlier this month on the BBC programme Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. In a quite remarkable piece of television, Mone revealed that she had, in fact, lied to the press about how she and her family stood to profit to the tune of up to £60 million as a result of PPE contracts negotiated between her husband's company on the government at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Mone had herself recommended Barrowman's company to the government during a period of crisis for PPE provision during the pandemic, and as a member of the House of Lords it has been stated that profiting from this arrangement may well have presented ethical issues that are now being investigated. Barrowman's company is also under investigation due to the poor quality of the PPE provided as a result of the near £200 million contract. Jacki and Lyle discuss just how much this can be considered a PR fiasco, with particular reference to Mone's defence that she believed she had done nothing wrong, her repeated assertions that there was no case to answer, and the notion that she lied about the prospect of profiting from this crisis in order to protect her family. Jacki and Lyle demonstrate how passionate they are about this topic throughout, whilst also praising Kuenssberg for how she conducted the interview itself.

A very Merry Christmas to you all from the team at The Rest Is PR! As we head towards New Year's Eve and 2024, Jacki and Lyle take a look back at some of the highlights from the podcast in 2023! They begin by stating that it would be impossible to talk about all of the highlights, mostly because every episode has been absolutely fantastic. Lyle discusses how the Netflix Beckham documentary episode was a particular highlight for obvious reasons, and he also opens up on the importance of the episode on alcohol and how it may well have inspired another podcast hosted by the duo. Jacki takes us through some fantastic episodes with, such as having the brilliant Esther Stanhope on the pod, the wonderful Helen Neal whose episode encouraged Jacki to re-write some of her messaging and position literature, as well as some great recordings with the likes of Eric Kress, Charles Orton-Jones, Sophia Aubrey Drake - whose episode on diversity was another brilliant highlight - and Caroline Wheeler to name only a few! Jacki and Lyle finish the episode by teasing their next podcast project - The Rest Is Alcohol - which will be arriving in 2024. Needless to say, 2023 was an incredible year for the podcast, and 2024 looks set to be even bigger still!

12 Jan 2024The Rest Is...Mr Bates vs The Post Office00:46:53

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a subject that has gripped the nation as a result of a truly extraordinary drama series which aired on ITV earlier this month - Mr Bates vs The Post Office. Starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among other, this exceptional dramatisation of the Horizon IT scandal, otherwise known as the British Post Office scandal, depicts one of the biggest miscarriages of justice ever witness in the United Kingdom. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft, false accounting or fraud as a result of the flawed Horizon accounting system, created by IT juggernaut Fujitsu. Incidentally, as is discussed in this episode of the podcast, this system is still in use today. Jacki and Lyle analyse the impact the ITV drama has had on the ongoing campaign for justice for the victims of this scandal, led by the inspirational Alan Bates. Jacki asks how it was only when this drama was broadcast that the government started to take notice, and why the Post Office didn't act when the crisis was first discovered. Lyle then discusses the involvement of Paula Vennells, former Post Office CEO who has recently handed back her CBE after a petition for her to do so garnered over a million signatures, and current Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, who was Minister for Postal Affairs in the coalition government and refused to meet with Alan Bates in 2010. Jacki and Lyle finish by discussing the lack of leadership within the Post Office and the effectiveness of the response to the outpouring of support from the British public in light of the excellent ITV drama.

19 Jan 2024The Rest Is...Evergreen Content00:31:57

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the phenomenon that is evergreen content. By definition, evergreen content is Evergreen is search-optimised content that is continually relevant and remains fresh for consumers over a prolonged period of time. Examples of this type of content include to-do lists, DIY videos, tutorials, top 10s and other similar types of content, and often these digital publications can be built upon at different times of the year. Many businesses and organisations produce evergreen content for seasonal campaigns, ranging from Christmas tutorials to back-to-school checklists. Jacki analyses how important this type of content can be for businesses looking to make waves in their industry, and how it is important to be innovative when producing this content in order to stand out from the crowd. Lyle, appearing from Dimoso HQ for the first time in a long while, announces that the podcast has officially reached 5000 streams, and discusses how podcasts themselves can be an example of how evergreen content can be delivered to a target audience.

Bryony has also recently been touring with the highly regarded Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Transatlantic Rumours, which is where the story of her Dry January begins in this fantastic first official episode of the podcast. Bryony discusses why she decided to embark on Dry January this year, opening up on the reasons she has stopped drinking alcohol in the past, as well as a recent ADHD diagnosis that she discovered can be linked back to a particular relationship with alcohol. Bryony also discusses the benefits this decision has had on her work, as she has become more sharp and focused during gigs as a result, before discussing with Jacki and Lyle the difficulties associated with Dry January and other breaks from alcohol when it comes to social situations. Jacki labels Bryony the 'Queen Of Soho', which it's hard to argue with, and Bryony discusses a brilliant book she has been reading called 'This Naked Mind' by the exceptional Annie Grace. 24 Jan 2024The Rest Is Alcohol - The Rest Is...Sober Curiosity & Running A Business (With Ben Williams)00:34:56

This week on The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle are joined by friend and former guest of The Rest Is PR - the brilliant Ben Williams. Ben is the Founder & Managing Director of Kiln, a digital transformation agency, and he has previously held positions at Apple, InMobi and Channel 4! Ben is also 5 years sober, having stepped away from alcohol around the same time as he founded Kiln. In an open and incredibly informative episode, Ben opens up about his struggles with alcohol in the past, including how problems with alcohol have sadly led to friends and family members passing away. He discusses how his decision to become sober after years of experiencing a problematic relationship with alcohol occurred at a crucial time in his life, where he had a choice of which direction to head in. Ben talks to Jacki and Lyle about how beneficial the choice he made at that time has been for his life since. He also implores people to have the conversation and decide what is best for themselves, emphasising that he stills goes to the pub with his friends, many of whom still drink. Lyle, Jacki and Ben finish the episode on the message that it is important not to judge people for their choices either way, and how important it is to be kind to one another when it comes to the very complex topic of alcohol.

26 Jan 2024The Rest Is...The Traitors, Trump, & Behavioural Trends00:35:26

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a couple of news stories that are making waves either side of the Atlantic - namely, the phenomenon that is the latest series of The Traitors here in the UK, and Donald Trump's increasing momentum in the race to become the Republican candidate in the upcoming U.S. Presidential election. In an at times chaotic episode, during which Lyle manages to make up an entirely new UN position, Jacki discusses the success of the BBC's comms strategy around the latest series of The Traitors, and how despite it being a message that continues to divide opinion, the consistency Donald Trump is demonstrating when it comes to delivering this message may well be a key reason for his recent successes in the Republican primaries. Lyle analyses whether TV concepts like The Traitors and Love Island would have existed in the 20th century, and Jacki opens up on why her husband refuses to watch The Traitors! Whether you're a Faithful, a Traitor, or simply as baffled as Lyle and Jacki are by Trump's return, this one is not to be missed!

02 Feb 2024The Rest Is...The January Blues00:33:58

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the age old phenomenon that is the January Blues! As we head into February in 2024, our hosts open up about how their January was, and what their plans are now that the traditionally blue month is behind them. Jacki analyses how businesses deal with the January blues, and also breaks down with Lyle the responsibility we, the public, have as well as the media in particular when it comes to finding the good stories in the midst of the conflicts and other bad news stories that will always persist throughout the news worldwide. The team once again discuss the Post Office scandal in this regard, with Jacki pointing out that the story of Lord Arbuthnot and his support for Mr Bates and the campaign as a whole was only reported on as part of a wider 'bad' news story, with Lyle outlining that, particularly in the midst of such a difficult month for so many, journalists should be looking to elevate these good news stories and make them stand out amongst the bad. There is also time to discuss Lyle's failure to fully understand the physics behind his new whiteboard, and his propensity to say Macbeth in theatres!

07 Feb 2024The Rest Is Alcohol - The Rest Is...January In The Hospitality Industry00:29:01

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss recent comments made by certain experts and professionals within the hospitality industry that have highlighted how an increase in people doing 'Dry January' has led to lower performance figures than they expected, and how statements like these can set a dangerous precedent when it comes to the importance we place on drinking alcohol in pubs and restaurants. Lyle analyses how he feels these industry experts are paying attention to the wrong metrics considering the increasing desire by many pub-goers to engage in a non-alcoholic beer or two at social events, even going as far as to say they might see more impressive numbers if they analysed these stats in detail as non-alcoholic drinks can be consumers at a slightly quicker rate! Jacki discusses how pubs, restaurants, and the hospitality industry at large need to do far better when it comes to providing a range of non-alcoholic drinks including wines and spirits, mentioning a landlord friend of hers who himself doesn't drink, but acknowledges that the range they offer at his pub could be better. There is a note of hope to end on, as Lyle opens up about his recent experiences in pubs where non-alcoholic beers like Lucky Saint are now increasingly available on draft, with the hope that this only becomes more prominent in the months and years to come!

09 Feb 2024The Rest Is...Archiving & Business History00:35:56

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the importance of archiving, and maintaining archives within both your personal and professional lives. This topic stemmed from Jacki purchasing some artwork which her husband, James, had mentioned he liked, only to discover that the artwork was previously owned by a woman by the name of Dione Guffey. Guffey, full name Dione Guffey Kenzer and married to Myron Kenzer, had worked for prominent advertising company J. Walter Thompson in the 1950s. Jacki discovered that she had also been painted by iconic artist Andy Warhol, but was unable to find further information having become fascinated with her story. In an intriguing episode, Jacki states that she is keen to contact J. Walter Thompson to ask if they have any archived information on Dione, and she uses this example to discuss the benefits and importance of maintaining historical records at your business, expressing her regret that she hasn't done the same at Dimoso. Lyle discusses his own experiences of archiving, including how his school employed a dedicated archivist which was a position he has previously thought unnecessary before realising its importance later down the line, and how there was a brief period where a chance discovery led to speculation that he may be part Italian! Jacki and Lyle also discuss the possibility of opening a business archiving business together, but doubt they'd have the time!

16 Feb 2024The Rest Is...Global Communications (With Catherine Channon)00:48:25

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the brilliant Catherine Channon. Cat is the Senior Vice President of Global Communications at Hurtigruten Expeditions, a sustainable expedition travel company, specialising in taking mindful and curious adventurers to the farthest corners of the world. She has previously been the Head of International Communications and the Vice President of Global Corporate Communications at the gaming giant EA, as well as the Director of International Integrated Communications at Warner Bros., where she headed up the International Public Relations, Community and Social Media teams and oversaw the regional press, social and influencer operations of what is one of the biggest entertainment corporations in the world. Cat has also worked for the likes of Take 2 Interactive, Blizzard Entertainment and the Eurogamer Network, and she is the leading individual fundraiser for the fantastic charity GamesAid. Cat joins Jacki and Lyle to discuss her career so far, including how she transitioned from working as a journalist for Future Publishing, notably on the Official Playstation magazine, into the PR industry and what inspired the move. She also discusses the importance of establishing relationships with external partners, before swapping stories with Jacki about their experiences with both crisis and internal communications. Lyle asks Cat about the advice she would give businesses looking to reduce the human impact of significant organisational changes, referring to a piece written in GamesIndustry.biz outlining the advice Cat would give to businesses in communicating through change, which Editor-in-Chief James Batchelor described as an essential read recently. There is time to discuss Jacki's recent trip to Florence, Cat's fundraising plans for 2024 including an attempt to swim the Channel, and their mutual interest in taxidermy!

23 Feb 2024The Rest Is...Christian Horner, Formula 1, & The Red Bull Racing Scandal00:43:11

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the situation surrounding allegations made against Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner, and how the team themselves are dealing with the ongoing scandal. Jacki begins by praising Red Bull's crisis communications strategy, in particular their continued transparency and the authenticity they have demonstrated both with their own comms and the visibility they are continuing to give Horner on the eve of the new Formula 1 season. Lyle discusses the recent PR Week article which quotes the likes of Lorna O'Neill, former head of comms at Thomas Cook, and industry veteran Mark Borkowski, both of whom state that Red Bull will need to tread carefully given how synonymous Horner is with the Red Bull F1 brand. There is time for the two to outline their preference between Horner and Mercedes principal Toto Wolff, and Lyle includes his customary football analogy, comparing the two F1 supremos to the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger in their heyday.

28 Feb 2024The Rest Is Alcohol - The Rest Is...Making The Podcast - The Story So Far00:31:27

On the latest episode of The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle discuss what it has been like so to make the podcast, and the wonderful feedback they have had so far. Lyle focusses on the idea of 'experiences' and how your approach to the idea of alcohol can either elevate or dampen these experiences over time. Jacki analyses how young people's outlook on drinking is markedly different to what it was like when she was that age! There is many a rant about the availability of water on nights out, but also plenty of praise for the innovators within the industry who are breaking the mould when it comes to low and non-alcoholic alternatives to the established names in the drinks industry. Particular mention is given to Lucky Saint, whose non-alcoholic beer is now a staple in pubs across the country, and the likes of Berczy Drinks and Impossibrew, whose appearances on Dragon's Den have caused a stir within the industry. Jacki and Lyle then take a look forward to some of the fantastic guests who will be appearing on the podcast very soon!

01 Mar 2024The Rest Is...Christian Horner Part 2 - Investigation Outcome & What It Means For Red Bull00:40:04

This week, Jacki and Lyle head out on a second lap of the Christian Horner story, as Red Bull Racing's internal investigation ends in them clearing their team principal of inappropriate behaviour. Jacki and Lyle discuss whether this is indeed the end of the story, and what the investigation process and ultimate outcome means for the Red Bull brand. Lyle compares Red Bull to Manchester City, claiming that despite their on-track success, Ferrari, who he compares with his beloved Manchester United and who will soon be strengthened by the arrival of Lewis Hamilton, will always be the more iconic brand within F1, with Jacki going one step further by mentioning that the latter's recent lack of success has not had an adverse affect on said brand. Both Jacki and Lyle also discuss Red Bull's continued transparency with the press, despite pressure from Ford CEO Jim Farley who criticised their unsatisfactory response to the allegations. There is time for an honourable mention for the brilliant Netflix series, Drive To Survive, and Lyle extends his customary invite to anyone involved with Red Bull Racing team!

DISCLAIMER - Since recording this episode, new information has come to light in the form of anonymous leaks which allegedly details text messages and photographs sent by Christian Horner to the woman who has made the aforementioned allegations. Horner himself has released a statement to reiterate his innocence, and these leaks have yet to be verified. This episode was recorded before this new information came to light, and there will be a part 3 to this series to respond to this breaking news very soon!

08 Mar 2024The Rest Is...Individual Awards & The Modern Woman Award 202400:31:09

This week, on International Women's Day 2024, Jacki and Lyle discuss the importance and significance of individual awards, in light of Jacki's nomination for the Modern Woman Award 2024! Modern Woman, a fantastic platform founded by friend of the podcast Rosie Coxshaw, has partnered with The Inspiration Awards for Women where the award will be presented at a ceremony at the Landmark Hotel in London on 22nd March! This got Jacki and Lyle thinking about the merits of individual awards, with Jacki opening up on how she felt when she heard she was nominated, and how it is always an opportunity to look back on what you are proud of when it comes to your career as well as championing others in your industry and those who have helped you along the way. Lyle discusses his own (very limited) experience of awards ceremonies, and how in actuality even at the highest level, such as with the likes of The Oscars and The Grammys, being nominated is fact the key indicator of exceptional performance and commitment. There is time for Jacki and Lyle to get their dates muddled when it comes to their respective birthdays, and there is initial confusion as to which podcast our intrepid duo are hosting at the time!

15 Mar 2024The Rest Is...Christian Horner Part 3 - Red Bull March On & More Controversy00:59:28

This week, Jacki and Lyle respond to yet another development in the saga that has gripped Formula 1 over the last few weeks. Unlike in previous episodes covering this story, where our hosts have been reacting to information that later became outdated as the story developed apace, this week Jacki and Lyle were able to respond to the latest news minutes after it broke! Namely, that the complainant in this case against Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has been suspended. It is the latest twist in a quite extraordinary scandal which has rocked the most successful team on the grid and had many inside and outside F1 speculating for weeks. Jacki and Lyle use this opportunity to discuss how this is an example of so-called 'Black PR' or 'Dark PR'. Jacki discusses her own experiences of this strategy, and Lyle analyses what the future might hold for Horner himself, Max Verstappen, whose father Jos has been extremely outspoken on the situation, and the Red Bull Racing team as a whole. As ever, there is time for a classic Lyle footballing analogy, and Jacki tells all about her recent birthday!

22 Mar 2024The Rest Is...Kate Middleton, Off-The-Record Briefings & THAT Mother's Day Photo00:47:37

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the question everyone is asking. Namely - where's Kate? Jacki and Lyle analyse the recent events that make up the mystery surrounding the Princess of Wales, who it was announced earlier this year was attending a hospital for a scheduled abdominal surgery, but who has been somewhat conspicuous by her absence since. Recent events have centred on the release of a supposed Mother's Day photo of Kate, now Catherine Windsor, with her three children which was later the subject of a 'kill order' by the likes of Reuters and the Associated Press due to the belief that it had been manipulated in some way. Kate later released a statement apologising for the confusion, claiming she had engaged in some amateur photo editing and this was an example of that particular pastime. Speculation has only grown since then, with many theories being posited before a photo, allegedly of Prince William and Kate, was released earlier this week by The Sun. Many believe this to be Kate and William, while others have speculated that this is a body double used by the Royal Family in order to quash the ongoing narrative. Whatever the truth of the situation, Lyle and Jacki discuss the way the Royal Family has dealt with this situation, and the differences between their strategy with Kate's situation and that of King Charles, who went into the same hospital for cancer treatment but has since been significantly more visible. Jacki opens up on her experience with off-the-record briefings, which she believes may have been in play in this instance, and Lyle discusses how there is a need for this press to exercise greater caution due to the comparisons that can be drawn between their treatment of Kate and previous treatment of Princess Diana. There is time to discuss Jacki's trip to San Francisco, and Lyle's upcoming drumming exploits!

29 Mar 2024The Rest Is...Scoop - The Netflix Drama on That Prince Andrew Interview00:41:32

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the upcoming Netflix drama, Scoop, based on the book Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews written by former BBC producer Sam McAlister. Specifically, the film centres on arguably the most shocking interview of the 21st century - Newsnight's interview with Prince Andrew about his association with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual assault of a minor against Andrew which he denies. The biographical drama stars Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, Billie Piper as McAlister, and Rufus Sewell in the role of Prince Andrew. Directed by Philip Martin, it depicts the process of securing the 2019 interview, and is due for release in early April. Jacki and Lyle discuss similarities between this dramatisation and those recently released depicting real-life events, such as the recent Alan Bates vs. The Post Office on ITV. Lyle asks whether PRs will need to become more aware for the need to control the narrative of a particular story before scriptwriters and TV producers get there first! Jacki opens up on her intrigue about how the film will recreate the moments that led to the interview itself, with the efforts of McAlister and Maitlis to secure the interview yet to have been dramatised on screen. Lyle and Jacki then discuss what the film's directors are hoping the audience will take from the film, with Lyle mentioning that this is a consideration at every level of performance art.

05 Apr 2024The Rest Is...Kate Middleton Part 2 - Her Statement, & A Masterclass In Communications00:35:14

This week, Jacki and Lyle address the recent statement delivered by the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, outlining her recent cancer diagnosis, the reasons behind her silence up to this point, and her gratitude for the support she has been shown over the last few weeks and months. Jacki and Lyle first emphasise that, when it comes to podcasting, timing can sometimes be everything! No sooner had the previous episode surrounding Catherine's situation been released, a video statement emerged which quickly dispelled all speculation and laid out the facts of her situation. Jacki discusses how well this whole situation was handled by Catherine's team, from the timing of the announcement, to the location it was filmed in, the method of delivery, and even the specifics of the message itself and the language used. Lyle praises Kate for her authenticity in what must have been an incredibly difficult set of circumstances, and both Jacki and Lyle again speculate that off-the-record briefings were to thank for the sympathetic press coverage both before and after the Princess' statement. Both Jacki and Lyle finish the episode by sending their love and support to Kate, and to everyone going through similar situations involving this incredibly damaging disease.

There are many charities doing truly remarkable work in this field, and Cancer Research UK is merely one of them. Head to https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ for more information on the incredible work they are doing to combat this disease.

12 Apr 2024The Rest Is...When Media Training Goes Too Far, & The Importance Of Engaging Your Audience00:35:41

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the importance of being original and innovative when delivering content and, particularly, speeches and large-scale events and conferences. Jacki opens up on her recent experiences at events like these, such as GDC in San Francisco, where speakers she was very excited to see ended up laying out very standard and, in Lyle's words, safe archetypes instead of leading the way with new and exciting thoughts. Jacki highlights former guest and friend of the podcast Eric Kress as a great example of someone who always has something new to say, and who does so in an engaging and ultimately entertaining way. Lyle emphasises the importance of engaging your audience, and how many industries have moved on from the days of information-heavy content. He states that it is now importance for industry leaders to capture the attention of their audiences, with Jacki mentioning the brilliant work being done by former guests Esther Stanhope and Guy Clapperton in training their clients to be entertaining as well as informative. There is time for Lyle to discuss how these themes translate across into the acting world, and for both Jacki and Lyle to air their grievances when it comes to recent events!

19 Apr 2024The Rest Is...Scoop Part 2 - The Response To The Netflix Drama00:38:35

This week, Jacki and Lyle are back with a follow-up to their preview of the Netflix film, Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell. Based on the book of the same name by Sam McAlister, played by Piper, this Netflix drama did not disappoint as it recreated the story of one of the most notorious television interviews in history - Emily Maitlis and her interview with Prince Andrew regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual abuse towards young women being trafficked by Epstein. Jacki and Lyle both praise the fantastic performances of the central cast, with Anderson as Maitlis, Piper as McAlister, Sewell as Prince Andrew and Keeley Hawes as Andrew's private secretary Amanda Thirsk all drawing particular acclaim. Jacki asks for Lyle's opinion on how Maitlis' character was depicted in the film, before assessing how Andrew represents what many in the PR industry would describe as a 'problematic client', with reference to his insistence on going about things his own way rather than listen to experts around him. Lyle draws comparisons between how it would appear McAlister obtained this interview and how Martin Bashir secured his interview with Diana, with the former seemingly working with Andrew's team to help them towards what they felt was the best course of action, and the latter having recently been found to have used manipulative tactics to coerce the then Princess of Wales into being interviewed. Jacki ultimately questions, with reference to the Netflix drama, why the Palace elected to press ahead with the Newsnight interview with little to none of their own conditions put in place, with Lyle asking whether this can be considered a turning point in securing the future of the programme itself.

26 Apr 2024The Rest Is...PR Resources & Pitching00:31:27

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the ongoing issues with current PR professional resources, and the impact they are having on the art of pitching. Jacki in particular has become increasingly aware of certain PR resources, such as database and newswire platforms, lagging behind when it comes to their functionality and effectiveness in what is an ever-evolving industry. Moreover, Jacki points to how much these resources continue to cost without offering anything new in this fast-paced and competitive space. Lyle and Jacki delve into how the industry has evolved, and offer their thoughts on what new tools and resources would prove useful to professionals who are needing to be more and more inventive with their pitching strategies. On these strategies, Lyle and Jacki discuss the need for PR professionals to do more than simply source journalists email addresses and other contact details and send out an array of releases, with the industry increasingly rewarding professionals who go the extra mile and find a variety of ways to contact and build relationships with journalists and clients alike. Finally, Jacki issues a plea to anyone developing brand new tools and resources to get in touch with the podcast, with Lyle agreeing that there must be a desire by some within the industry to utilise these new technologies moving forward!

03 May 2024The Rest Is...The Gender Pay Gap (With Amelia & Lydia Miller)00:45:43

This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the fantastic Amelia and Lydia Miller. The two sisters are the co-founders of Ivee, a tech platform that helps women return to the workforce after a career break and connects companies with this qualified, yet completely untapped, talent pool. Amelia is a published Gender Psychologist from the University of Cambridge as well as being a Behavioural Economics and Gender Pay Gap Specialist, and Lydia is a Future of Work Specialist and Diversity in VC Expert who has previously worked as a Deloitte Ventures CVC Investor. In an absolutely fantastic episode, Amelia and Lydia discuss the inspiration behind creating Ivee, telling the story of their mother who took a career break earlier in her career having worked at a very high level as an accountant for a number of years, but upon her return to work was forced to take a job below her pay grade and one which she was significantly overqualified for. Amelia and Lydia say that, sadly, this experience is not unique to their mother, and that there are still a number of women who experience what is known as the 'Motherhood Penalty' when looking to return to work after a career break. They point to Claudia Goldin's Nobel Prize-winning research when it comes to how the issue of the gender pay gap can be addressed, and how companies they work with need to ensure they have effective flexibility policies in order to achieve the Ivee seal of approval! Jacki discusses the PR appeal of Amelia and Lydia's story, and offers her own advice on how they can move forward in this respect with Ivee, before Lyle asks the question he was dying to ask - what it's like to work together as sisters!

10 May 2024The Rest Is...Baby Reindeer, Piers Morgan Uncensored & 'The Real Martha'00:41:49

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the recently recorded interview between Piers Morgan and the woman who has come to be known as the 'real Martha' from Richard Gadd's extraordinary Netflix series - Baby Reindeer. Fiona Harvey, who stalked Gadd for a prolonged period and Gadd later wrote his one man show, Baby Reindeer, based on his experiences during this time. After its release on Netflix, Gadd took to social media to urge viewers not to seek out the real people behind the characters from the show, but within days Harvey had been identified as the woman the character 'Martha' was based on. At the time of recording this episode, the interview on 'Piers Morgan Uncensored' on TalkTV had not been aired, and as a result Lyle and Jacki were unable to comment on any of the specifics. However, in a wide-ranging chat, Lyle expresses his sympathy for Gadd, stating that as a creative you should feel safe to write based on lived experiences without the threat of the real peoples' identities being revealed. Jacki discusses Fiona Harvey's lack of PR representation, with Lyle asking whether it is necessary to provide the PR equivalent of legal aid in situations where individuals with mental health issues find themselves in these highly exposing TV situations. Jacki and Lyle both agree that the TalkTV interview is exploitative of Harvey, who has seemingly offered to tell her story without understanding the consequences of sanctioning such a move. Jacki finally discusses what an indictment this situation is on where we find ourselves as a country, with Jacki worrying that the lack of mental health care provision in the UK leads people like Harvey to seek outlets like this instead of looking for the appropriate help for her condition.

17 May 2024The Rest Is…PR & Startups (With Beatka Wójciak)00:42:31

This week, Jacki and Lyle are delighted to welcome the absolutely brilliant Beatka Wójciak. Beatka is the Founder & CEO of Chaos Cookie, an Art & Games studio which has recently produced the phenomenal game Squarelets! Chaos Cookie also focuses on empowering women in STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), with a particular focus on the gaming industry. Beatka is a software engineer with a passion for creating elegant, user-centered designs, and she has previously worked for Google as a Senior Software Engineer before founding Chaos Cookie! She was also a volunteer for UEFA during Euro 2012, which Lyle was particularly interested in! She has been mentored by the one and only Jacki Vause since heading out on her own with Chaos Cookie! In an incredibly insightful episode, Beatka discusses her career so far, including what it was like to take the leap of faith that was setting up her own company and leaving Google. She discusses how she is someone who always has a plan for any situation, stating that she has a Plan A - Chaos Cookie - right down to a plan Y and Z already established in her mind! Beatka opens up on how she came to create Squarelets, stating that it was an idea she had at University that started to take shape as a prototype during a stint in hospital. Squarelets has been an absolute revelation in the industry, being named a Game Changer by Games London last year, winner at Patch Of Approval also last year, being named an official selection at the London Games Festival earlier this year! Jacki and Beatka discuss the importance of having a PR frame of mind when embarking on founding a startup, and Lyle is inspired by Beatka's analogy of constantly testing yourself on higher springboards, in the knowledge that there isn't really such a thing as failure if your committed to following your passion.

24 May 2024The Rest Is...Baby Reindeer, Piers Morgan Uncensored & The Real Martha: Part 200:32:10

This week, Jacki and Lyle embark on the follow-up to the recent episode discussing Baby Reindeer, and Fiona Harvey's recent appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV. Dubbed 'The Real Martha', Harvey was interviewed by Piers Morgan, who asked her about her side of the Baby Reindeer story, including how she met Richard Gadd in the first place, what her views are on the Netflix series, and whether she did in fact send 41,000 emails, 350 hours of voice messages, 744 tweets, 48 Facebook messages, and 106 letters as Gadd claims in his Oliver Award-winning script. In a rare occurrence for the podcast, Jacki and Lyle disagree when it comes to Harvey's believability, with Jacki leaning towards supporting her and her side of the story, and Lyle arguing that it is likely Harvey was being dishonest in her interview with Morgan in an attempt to defend herself. They do, however, both agree that this interview was at best unethical and at worst exploitative of someone who demonstrated a lack of media training and a limited understanding of the consequences of agreeing to this interview. Lyle brings up the rumour that Fiona Harvey is seeking up to £1 million from Piers Morgan for her appearance on his show, with Morgan later replaying that it's not the money she wants but 'an agent'. Lyle tries desperately to not sit on the fence, possibly to no avail depending on your view!
