08 Feb 20235. The "Vaping helps With Anxiety" Myth00:11:08

This is the 3rd (and most common) myth that keeps people vaping. Drug addiction creates anxiety. Using the drug relieves ONLY the anxiety it creates.

You wouldn't defend someone who stole something and only gave a fraction of it back. But when you argue for the nicotine anxiety myth, you do exactly that.

Drug addiction increases anxiety. That is actually the main characteristic of any addiction: increased anxiety when you don't have the drug. The belief that vaping actually helps reduce anxiety is true to the extent that is solve for the anxiety it has created. In terms of non drug addiction related anxiety, vaping only temporarily distracts your from it without actually solving for or processing it.

When I was vaping, I was at constant war with myself. I knew that it was getting in the way of the life I wanted but I just couldn't bring myself to quit for good.

In today's episode, you will hear about one of my most pathetic moments with my addiction. I hope it helps you see how vaping is blocking you from becoming your ideal self. There were many times over my 9 year battle with nicotine addiciton where my ack of control made me feel powerless, weak, and shameful.

Looking back, I actually understand why it was so hard for me to quit permanently. I had tried on so many occassions to beat myself into a life free of nicotine. At the time, I never realized that learning to love myself as a vaper was truly the first step to true nicotine liberattion.

One of the most important thing that comes from learning the emotional work that I teach is that it is incredibly empowering. When you can sit down with any emotion without resisting it, numbing it, or reacting to it (acting it out), you become the kind of person who takes full control over their life experince.

Addiction, by its very nature is an emotional problem. The best version of yourself is the one who is willing to feel any emotion. Addicion and your best self cannot co-exist.

When it comes to quitting, willpower is NOT a good method for success. Most people resist their cravings using willpower but thi is almost always a temporary and uncomfortable solution.

The real solution to managing withdrawl cravings is to learn how to allow them without resistence. This is a practice that will serve you greatly. When you no longer need to avoid or resist withdrawl cravings, you can let them process and pass through your body. This typically happens in less than just 60 secronds when practiced regularly.

Today's episode will get you to the truth about your relationship with nicotine. Sometimes we say we want something but we aren't actually willing enough to put ourselves in the discomfort required for growth. It's good to pause and take an honest and compassionate look about what we say we want vs. what we are actually willing to do to get there.

I will also tell you about how my dad quit after 40 years of a (2 pack a day) cigarette addiction and how he did it in a temporary way that will cause him a lot of unnecessary suffering.

It sounds counter-intuitive but the skill that allows you to beat cravings is actually learning how to be with them until they proccess through your body. Learning to sit with your cravings/urges is a skill that will allow you to overcome them so you can quit vaping. It is the exact same skillset that will allow you to create the life you want post-quitting.

This of a craving as an energy in your body that has to dissipate by vibrating through you. When you numb over it or distract yourself from it, it never has a change to vibrate away. Give yourself space to just be with your cravings and you will be able to stop fighting them with the never ending game of willpower.

When you get really honest about it, there is actually no need for nicotine. The desire you have for it has actually been learned. That means the only reason you desire to use nicotine is because of belief systems that have been taught to you about nicotine. This is one of the biggest mistakes I made that made quitting take 6+ years. Hopefully it helps you avoid the same suffering. In order to quit vaping for good, you have to change the beleifs and thoughts you have about yourself. That means that you will have to startt to think and believe things that someone who doesn't vape thinks and believes.

Remember that your thoughts create your desire to vape. In order to remove desire, you have to learn how to change your thoughts. It is simple but not necessarily easy.

In this episode, I talk about the most important thing I teach in my career in life coaching: numbing emotion. If you want to live the life you're dreaming about, you need to learn this.

When we numb our emotions, we use external things to change how we feel internally. This could include things like nicotine, food, porn, alcohol, shopping, drugs, and sometimes even medication.

Understanding this concept is vital when it comes to living a life free of nicotine because everything we do and don't do in our lives is fuelled by how we respond to our emotions. Numbing typically causes negative results in our lives like unwanted weight gain and addiction.

A lot of people try to modify beavior before learning about WHY they are acting out the behavior in the first place. If you want to make quitting permanent, the best way is to zoom out so that you can find the root problem creating the behavior. Once you get to the root of any problem, you can eliminate it all together instead of trating symptoms.

There are a whole bunch of methods for quitting out there but they are NOT born equal. I cure. I don't treat symptoms.

When you treat symptoms, you are never truly a quitter.

The key to becoming a true non-vaper is to get to the root problem of the addiciton (thought and emotions) so that you can quit in both your mind and your body. If you want to remove your desire to vape completely, this is the only way to do it.

One of the main reasons why we use substances like nicotine, food, alcohol, and abuse medications is because they allow us to tolerate lives that we are deeply unhappy with. When we quit, we are choosing to experience the whole truth of our livess. Although this can be an unconfortable experience, it is a transformative experience that allows us to understand and change what is no longer serving us.

Although addictions create a sense of false happiness in our lives, they ironically make our lives much more UNhappy overally. That is the paradox of addiction.

Do you find that you have trouble staying away from nicotine when alcohol gets involved? This episode should help. The reason why it is so much more difficult to not vape when you drink is because alcohol inhibits your power to regulate your emotions and cravings. It makes total sense that drinking is a vulerable place for quitters to relapse.

If you ever mess up and vape when you said you weren't going to, the best thing you can do is to look at the situation and what occured from a place of genuine curiousity, not judgement.

Welcome back!

In today's episode, I am going to show you what's possible for you in your life and relationship with nicotine when you stop seeing failure as a bad thing. I was taught from a young age to see failure as something that was wrong or bad. Every time that I didn't achieve a goal or an outcome I wanted on the first try, I thought something had gone wrong, and I would give up without learning anything from it.

Today, failure is the number one way that I get better at anything. Shifting my perspective on failure is one of the most important shifts I've made that took me from a life full of addiction and misery, to a life where I am actually taking consistent action towards my dreams. Failure is how we learn. And when we allow ourselves to see it that way, we stop shaming ourselves and we are able to grow and succeed at anything we put our minds to.

So many people make quitting a dreadful process by setting and anxiously vaping right up until it comes. That is completly unnecessary and frankly, a really unpleasant and unloving way to quit.

The way that I teach people to quit vaping is by learning how to be completely present with themselves and the whole range of their emotions. Thought and emotional work is a process that takes time. And that's okay.

Once you understand that you have full control over the thoughts in your mind and the way you resond to your emotions, you no longer need to rush to the end goal and can enjoy the whole process of quitting. The best way to quit for good is to learn the tools now, and then quit naturally when you feel you've gotten them down.

In today's episode, I interview ex-client and friend, Chase Thompson.

Chase had been vaping for 6 years and had begun in high school. Like so many other high school students, he would hide out in the bathroom and try to find people to sneak hits from. From then on, Chase eventually started buying his own vapes and his use steadily increased until he couldn't remember life before it or imagine life without it.

In late 2023, Chase found this podcast while searching for a way to quit vaping on his break at work, and over the next few weeks had several AHA moments that eventually led to him signing up for the full quit for good course/community & coaching calls I offer today.

Like so many of you that listen to this podcast, Chase was a bit hesitant to believe that his life really could be better without having his vape be a central part of it. But, after getting to the root mental and emotional reasons behind vaping, he was able to see that life really can be better without nicotine.

Here are my fundamentals for helping you understand your attatchment to nicotine and how to get you unattached for good.

If you want to quit vaping the right way, the way that acutally lasts and helps you to understand why it worked, you want to learn a skill called metacognition, AKA: watching your own brain think. It is a skill completely unique to human beings and it is what gives us the ability to produce such amazing things in this world.

18 Oct 202341. Why You Shoudn't Rush Into Quitting Vaping00:14:53

So many people set goals because they think that the accomplishment of those goals is will brings them good-feeling emotions. Here's the thing, you results don't create your emotions... Your thoughts do! That means if you wait to feel good until you achieve a difficult goal, the chances are high that you will NEVER make it.

The real accomplishent is learning to enjoy the process on the way to the goal. If you feel like you have been rushing into quitting or in a hurry to be a non-vaper, I recommend that you ask yourself why you think you need to rush... more specifically what emotions you think quitting will bring you, then help yourself to practice feeling those emotions now.

If you shame yourself into quitting, you will find that even after you quit, you've gotten really good at feeling shame and you will find ways to expereince it as a non-vaper as well. It's how your emotions work. The good news... it worked the EXACT same with positive emotions like self-love and respect.

If you've listened to the podcast for a while, you’ll know I don't believe substances are bad. I believe that substances are neutral and can be used for productive or unproductive reasons. With that said, a lot of us are using substances for reasons that become detrimental to our lives.

Halloween and fall are symbolic of death and decay so that rebirth can occur in the spring. I don't normally get too woo-woo or spritual on this podcast, but I do believe that quitting vaping is a symbolic act that demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice what is no longer serving us in honor of becoming the best versions of ourselves.

The thing that you need most is in the place you're least willing to look. That means the emotions we avoid with nicotine are exactly the ones we have to learn to courageously face in order to get what we want in life.

In today’s episode we’re going to talk about perfectionism and how it relates to addiction. So many of us have been taught that we need to be “perfect” or never fail. And if we can’t be perfect, then we’ve been taught the way to get there is with shame and self-deprecation. 

In truth, perfectionism is just a way we protect ourselves from the way we talk about ourselves if we don’t get the results we want on the first try. So most perfectionists at their core just have poor relationships with themselves so they don’t even try so they don’t have to face what they believe to be the “Truth” about themselves.

A lot of people say that vaping helps them concentrate. The nature of addiction is to focus your mind on the external thing that you are addicted to. That means when you don't have that substance or external thing, it becomes almost impossible to focus on anything else.

If you believe that vaping and nicotine addiction help you to concentrate and focus, it is because using the substance you're addicted to relieves you enough to not think about it until the cravings quickly return. Addiction does not help you concentrate. It does the complete opposite.

Quitting smoking/vaping with the willpower method means that you wre fighting with beliefs in your head that create desire to use nicotine, while also pushing up against the craving and emotions that need to be processed in order for them to actually go away. It is an exhausting method that is very ineffctive and almost always temporary.

Our society does two things that get us into a lot of trouble

  1. It teaches us that we should be happy all the time.
  2. It concentrates things that release dopamine and sills our environments with them.

When we abuse our dopamine system, the mechanism designed to motivate us, it throws us completely out of wack and ends up creating a lot more harm than good.

Taking a dopamine detox isn't just about stopping the quick hits, it's about understanding why it is beneficial to not constantly consume artificial dopamie hits in the first place.

The addictive personality myth is a psychological theory based on the idea that a lot of people are addicted to more than one thing and that some people have a proclivity to be addicted to things more than others.

The evidence for the addictive personality theory is not strong. And, once you understand the emotional basis of addiction, it becomes clear that this theory doesn't really hold any water. The reaosn why so many people get addicted to more than one thing is because addiction, at its core, is an emotional problem. It is not a personality issue, it is an emotional avoidance issue.
