00:00 What is the Halacha l’meisa regarding emunah bitachon?

13:11 Can someone convert from Ashkenaz to Sefardi, and if so does he take on a new mesora (with parental permission)?
18:19 What does it mean that the Avos are partners in creation?

50:03 Can one eat an apple from his own tree that fell on Shabbos?

18:07 What is the advantage of aveira lishma? Is it advisable?

30:10 What’s the point of a positive and negative Mitzvah being seemingly the same. You must salt every offering, you must not bring an offering without salt. Guard the temple. Don’t leave it unguarded. Etc.

37:45 Is there an idea that Torah calls for extra respect toward a divorced woman in the same way it calls for the respect of a widow?

46:12 Given that the NJ Chinese restaurant that was recently found to be serving tarfus had a mashgiach at all times, and only the O-K agency officially had a key to the establishment, and yet it got away with serving trief for six months, how can we rely on these hashgachos? And is this situation worse in Israel, where none of the hashgachos require a mashgiach temidi?

53:38 If, according to Rambam, Avraham was only experiencing nevua with the three strangers, how do we know that any other miracle in Torah isn’t considered a vision?

1:02:12 Did the snake have free will?

1:05:00 How can Hashem challenge someone by making them homosexual?

1:16:24 Why is it that regardless of how great and knowledgeable a ger is, he can not become a dayan?

1:19:58 In terms of the last question, how do we look at the prophet Ovadia?

1:20:34 What’s the significance of Noach and the dove and a leper and releasing doves?

1:22:28 If a person is born of a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish father, is that person a mistake? What would have happened to this soul had this improper relationship not taken place?

1:26:17 How do we invite someone who is not frum to our Shabbos meal?

1:31:00 Can a non-religious Ashkenazi eat rice on Pesach at a Sefardi table?

1:32:57 If the first mitzva for Adam was Pru U’rvu, why is this not a mitzva for non-Jews?

1:35:42 What is the basis for that rule? If women join the army, are they obligated to get married?

1:38:44 Is there Kivush (conquest) by Adam or Noach?

04:48 How do we know that we’re not missing important mesora after Catholic censorship?

20:12 If we die when we’ve made our tikkun, it’s fair to assume each day we wake up we still have work to do. If so, why are there ways to extend our life?

23:00 the fruits of genosar in Gemara Brachos?

30:40 Does Tinok shel nishbah apply to goyim? What about Teshuva?

39:25 Should we learn more Ibn Ezra this year, given the 5783rd pasuk in the Torah?

44:20 What is the proper burial process for Jews and why is cremation not acceptable? Is it also bad for non-Jews to be cremated? And what does ashes to ashes dust to dust entail?

52:45 How do we explain the Jewish view of homosexuality to non-religious family members?

59:00 Is it an aveira to follow the royal news?

1:03:50 Is it appropriate to use religious themes to advance political purposes? “It’s a mitzvah to vote for Gimmel” or “possible to acquire Olam HaBah in one moment next to a picture of Shas?

1:15:50 Since it is said that Hashem is making Shidduchim, how do we understand the idea that people can marry the wrong person and their soul may not be complete?

1:19:52 The Chazon Ish said we don’t change halacha based on new discoveries, but didn’t he argue on certain halachos?

1:21:50 Is it Mutar to ask for some of your friend’s food (ex: “can I have some” to your friend who is eating his snack in the hallway of Yeshiva)? If someone asks and you don’t want to give them, but you feel uncomfortable saying no, are you being Nichshal them in Avak Gezel by giving them from your food?

1:26:02 Can the Rebbe help us understand why the halacha is to not put out a tiny fire on Shabbat and allow it to burn your house down, and if someone doesn’t put out a fire on Shabbat and it spreads to the neighbors properties is he obligated in monetary damages?

30 Dec 2020Q&A- AI, Rationalism & Mysticism01:12:58

00:00 What’s the purpose of being on this earth?

7:23 Following R’ Moshe Feinstein’s psak regarding mamzerim from reform (civil) 2nd marriages, would this mean those women wouldn’t need to cover their hair?

12:58 In order for Biah to be effective, doesn’t the man need to state his kavana?

17:50 How is Shabbos affected by changes in the dateline?

24:35 If it is a mitzvah deoreisa not to return to mitzrayim, how about issues like business, the occupation of Sinai peninsula, the Rambam etc.?

27:42 (Followup) What about those who speak Coptic Egyptians?

28:20 If one is exposed to rationalistic views and struggles with mystical views e.g. Zohar; Kabbalah, how does he sensitize himself?

35:25 How does tzaddik gamor (without a yetzer hara) get schar for mitzvah?

42:20 We know the original calendar (around Rosh Chodesh) was determined by witnesses in beis din, what would it take to go back to that?

46:24 (Followup) It is certain that we need Eliyahu haNavi?

48:35 Don’t we need a beis din in order to confirm that it is Eliyahu haNavi who will institute the beis din?

49:17 What is the Halacha in assisted pregnancy (e.g. artificial insemination)?

58:30 Would it be mares ayin to a single woman with in-vitro fertilization?

1:00:00 Can a man be a sperm-donor?

1:01:56 If the Avos only kept the positive commandments, then wasting seed would not seem assur. Can a goy not waste seed?

1:04:41 How does one differentiate between magic (even seemingly practicing magic) and very impressive action?

1:09:52 Does HaShem hold Torah learning more precious ?

04 Apr 2020Q&A- Cremation, ZOOM Seders and COVID-1901:47:56

Rabbi Dr Yitzchak Breitowitz, of Ohr Somayach Jerusalem, discussing the most common questions about Judaism.

To submit questions, feedback or for sponsorship opportunities, contact us at: podcasts@ohr.edu

  • Can we have a zoom Seder with family?
  • The Chayei Adam in siman 5 brings a story of a very righteous man who is ultimately judged to gehinnom because of the many times he said shem Hashem without kavana. For many of us having kavana for every shem Hashem is very difficult.
  • Why did chazal include so many shemos in davening, if it would be such a michshol for so many?
  • On Seder we do Kadesh then Urchatz. This goes against "Sur Meh Ra Ase Tov". Can we apply this all year or only Pesach?!
  • Is it better to just not say shem Hashem except when absolutely necessary?
  • If I can’t see or smell tzoa can I say Shem hashem near it?
  • Can I sell my chometz over the phone?
  • What should one do this year regarding toveling new keilim, considering the lack of accessibility of  mikvaos?
  • Why can’t I wear tefillin at night if the Torah says to?
  • Are the new governmental laws against minyanim halachicly binding? Any difference in israel vs chutz laaretz?
  • When Moshiach comes will we have no more struggles?
  • Was the yehudah HaChosid really a forgery like Rav Moshe said - Yehudah Hachosid states Dovid took parts out of Torah…?
  • Do ladies have to shower after the mikvah in these times ?
  • Is there any way to avoid the taanis bechorim this year?
  • Since we can't gather for a siyum for the fast of the first born, what is ok and not ok to make a siyum on?
  • Can one fill up heated water in a crockpot before Shabbat, leave it on a low setting and warm cooked food during Shabbat?
  • Are there any halachic leniencies  for people who've never made pesach before because of the pandemic?
  • Are employers responsible to continue paying workers during the government shutdown?
  • If I am on a ship during shabbos and am not allowed to light a shabbos candles how can I make up for this ?
  • If a Jew borrowed a new pot from a goy to circumvent toiviling, and the goy converts, are the pots then non kosher?
  • Why do some women want to wear tefillin and are they allowed to?
  • Right now, some countries are cremating the dead because of COVID-19. What is the Jewish position on this?
  • How does one define someone being his "rebbi", even not a rebbi muvhak, regarding doing "heseba" in front of them?
  • Is shnayim mikra a stronger chiyuv now that we cant listen to leining in shul?
  • Can one use a timer that is preset for their warming plate or crockpot to heat up cooked food to make it hot on Shabbat?
  • What does a person do if they have to sit Shiva not being able to have a minyan during corona virus?
  • If a non-jew is in the conversion process when mashiach comes. Will they be able to finish their conversion?
  • Can the rav do regular q and a streams?  this has been very very enlightening
  • Is there any halachic difference between limud hatorah on digital mediums versus in person? why is it different than tfilla?
  • Why is conversion under the GPS/RCA in the US? Why can't one convert with any orthodox rabbi  in the US/Israel?
  • Should we be concerned that this physical distancing may be similar to that of the Nazi Ghettos?
  • Nus' Sfard has a pusek for Friday night if davening as a yachid for instead of Borech Hu. Can we say it during the week?
  • Should we be mourning now over not being in shul or should we be happy we're in our homes uplifting it?
  • What if you accidentally ate something not kosher?
  • Can a nesspresso machine be kashered for pesach?

00:00 Rashi on Chumash seems to be based on Sod (Kabbala), but he said it’s pashut?

2:35 One of the reasons given for Yaakov’s crying over Rochel is that he wouldn’t be buried with him. Why is this significant?

17:17 Rome is from Eisav, but how could this be, genealogically?

22:35 In zmiros and davening, we seem to direct our requests to malachim rather than Hashem. Why is this?

30:57 Why can we say the names of certain angels but not others?

33:48 Why specifically tehillim for the sick and mishnayos for the dead that are read out?

42:40 Is this the reason for all of Kaddish in Aramaic, or just “ihay shmay…”

22 Oct 2021Q&A- Guilt, R' Shlomo Carlebach & Evolution01:27:05

How is it that in the Gemara that some people have a mesora and others don’t?

How does deal with feelings of guilt moving forward having grown up doing aveiros?

What’s the halacha regarding a tchup?

It seems like the frum world sees women place more emphasis on emunah but less with men?

Why does the Torah spend time going through the generations as in Parashas Bereshis and Noach?

If there will never be a prophet as great as Moshe Rabbeinu, what should be expected from Moshiach?

How did Eliezer come to Avraham? If he was connected to Nimrod, why did he send him to his enemy?

Will the yetzer hara for avoda zara come back after moshiach?

Are the descendants of Yishmoel and B’nei Katura also chaiv in bris milah, even today?

Note from Rabbi Breitowitz: I was asked about the halachic obligation of the descendants of Yishmael to have Bris Milah . I cited the Rambam  that Bnai Yishmael are exempt from Milah though Bnai Keturah are obligated  (as opposed to Rashi who maintains that only the actual sons of Keturah needed Milah and not their descendants ).So far ,so good. I then said that since the Bnai Ketura have intermingled with Bnai Yishmael  and are no longer a distinct group ,all who identify as Bnai Yishmael are now exempt .This was an error on my part . Rambam says exactly the opposite The intermingling of Bnai Ketura with Bnai Yishmael obligates the entire group . (In partial defense[not really!]I was thinking of the Minchas Chinuch who does indeed suggest  that the intermingling should exempt the group rather than obligate it but that is not Rambam,s view). I apologize for the error .Bivracha ,YBreitowitz

How should one respond when asked by a non-religious person about olam haba?—Are there sources?

Are there any ramazim for how we can relate to olam haba?

How do we define what a hashkafa is?

It seems like learning Torah lishma is ideal, and others say it must lead to something?

Is there the possibility of alternate universes regarding quantum mechanics?

With Rav Shlomo Carlebach yahrzeit coming up, how should we commemorate?

Muslims around Israel have certain good qualities eg Tzanua? Are we supposed to learn from them?

Did HaShem always intend for there to be war in the world?

Can evolution in its entirety be consistent with Torah?

Yeshayahu gives musste that people do mitzvos by rote, how do we avoid this?

05 Aug 2022Q&A- Kiruv Techniques, Daf Yomi & Relating to Churban01:47:36
Would you like to sponsor an episode? A series?

00:00 Rav address two sent it questions, regarding anistanus and talmud Torah

08:30 It is said that if someone makes 3 shidduchim, they are guaranteed Olami Habo—how does this work?

13:42 Where do the traditions for tefillin designs and wrapping techniques come from?

21:37 What are the pleasures of this world that we are essentially obligated to enjoy according to the Yerushalmi?

27:52 If Judaism is meant to be authentic, why is it that in Kiruv, we offer so many fancy trips and gourmet food?

33:09 In terms of the sun being stopped for Moshe and Joshua, it says it never happened before by Joshua—how do we understand this?

35:30 What are the different opinions of taking early Shabbos?

45:03 These days, there are often discounts given by insurance companies to women and the gender is defined by what the insured person states. Would it be mutar for a biological man to say he identifies as a woman in order to pay a smaller premium?

49:57 How could two opposite statement be true?

52:38 In terms of Tu B’Av, how do we understand the gemara’s reasons for a public shidduch day so to speak and how did times change?

58:56 How is it that Targum Onkelos was min HaShamyim?

1:02:29 Do we make Yam Hagadol bracha on the Pacific Ocean?

1:03:24 Why wouldn’t the whole world be made Jewish such that everyone would have the maximum opportunity for closeness to Hashem?

1:07:02 if the Talmud discusses 8 genders of Judaism, what does that mean?

1:08:37 Why do we accept Kabbalah today in Halacha?

1:13:09 If I can’t finish slichos, tachanun, general tefillah or the like, am I’m missing out on certain forgiveness capacity?

1:16:43 How do we relate to the destruction of the Temple if we never experienced it and why would our lowly generation be fortunate enough to have it rebuilt?

1:22:53 Why do Ashkenazim and Sephardim differ in the way they cover their eyes in Shema?

1:24:50 Kesubos is the current masechta in Daf Yomi cycle. A lot of the material discussed is about rape and other material that some may find disturbing. Can the Rav share some advice on how to approach this masechta with the right perspective. Alternatively, if learning this masechta will bother or discourage someone everyday, is it better to just learn something else?

1:30:16 How does it work that Torah is the ultimate healer but the Rambam states that one needs other outlets?

1:32:30 Why do we follow certain halachos today that some rabbanim wouldn’t have approved of?

1:36:25 Rashi in Moed Katon explains the practice of the Beis Din placing a stone on someone’s coffin as a זכר בעלמא of stoning someone who died while excommunicated.
If so, why do we place stones on graves today?

1:37:32 Why didn’t Avraham get punished for asking for a guarantee for Israel’s quality while the Meraglim did?

1:39:36 How do we view the seemingly vain descriptions of women in Ta’anis?

1:41:31 If creative acts are forbidden on Shabbos (melachos) why is intimacy permitted, isn’t that the most creative act?

1:43:47 What messages was Hashem trying to convey to Eliyahu during Har HaCarmel events?
