16 Feb 2020 | Why Your Blood Cholesterol Levels Are Important | Sean Ryan | 01:18:15
In Episode #93, I sat down again with Sean Ryan to check in and see how he’s doing with his transition to a plant-based lifestyle. We picked up from where we left things in Episode #89 and reviewed his pretransition baseline blood work, and then spent the majority of the episode talking through cholesterol and how we can use diet to affect our cholesterol levels. At the end, we also touched on meal prep, handling social conversations, and a few other questions that Sean had since our last episode together.
Whether you are thinking about transitioning to a plant-based diet, are currently transitioning, or already eat a plant-based diet, I think you will take something away from both today’s episode and Episode #89.

01 Jun 2019 | Finding the Flow State | Red Bull Athlete Patrick Seabase | 01:27:09
In Episode #69, I sat down with Red Bull athlete Patrick Seabase, who cycles over mountain passes involving gruelling climbs and steep descents on a bike that has one gear and no brakes, often reaching speeds close to 100 km/hr (62 mph). Yes – mind blowing! This is the first time Patrick has told his story on a podcast, so I was very honoured to have him on the show and am incredibly grateful to have this platform to share our conversation with you.
In this episode, we covered Patrick’s early years, being kicked out of home, and how he discovered his passion for cycling. He shares the type of bike he rides, what’s unique about it, and the concentration required to ride this bike and finding the ‘flow state’. We also talked about how his diet has changed over the years and why he was inspired to remove animal products from his plate.

24 Aug 2018 | Food Innovation That Can Save the world | Thomas King | 01:02:48
In Episode #22, I spoke with Thomas King, CEO and founder of Food Frontier, about cellular and plant-based meat alternatives and how they can save the world. Only 22 years old, Thomas is still one of the most impressive humans I have come across. At age 13, he set up the world’s most-visited website on unsustainable palm oil and the industry’s detrimental effects on the environment. In 2015, Thomas received the Young Australian of the Year award for his work as an environmental activist. Most recently, Thomas has become passionate about alternative meat solutions to help reduce the effect of our current food system on animals and the environment.
In this episode, we discussed how Thomas’s passion for our environment developed and his role as an activist, as well as the current food system, its effects on our environment, and alternative meat solutions. Listen to find out what cellular or clean meat is, how it’s produced and regulated, and what the future of cellular meat and plant-based meat alternatives looks like. If you’d like to hear more from Thomas, check out Episode #115.

31 Aug 2018 | One Man’s Journey from Keto to Plant-Based | Jeremy Butler | 01:55:35
In Episode #23 of The Proof, Jeremy Butler shares his journey from a keto to a plant-based diet. At first glance, Jeremy is your everyday Aussie bloke, who for many years focused, with the best of intentions, on being the healthiest version of himself. What’s fascinating is that beneath the surface Jeremy has gone through a tremendous amount of trial and error to ultimately discover a dietary lifestyle that aligns with his inner values: a diet that causes less harm and promotes longevity.
Listen to find out about Jeremy’s experiences with both the paleo and ketogenic diets and the inner health effects that he noticed behind closed doors. For years, Jeremy ignored these signs and symptoms because he was so committed to the movement, until he had a shift in priorities. He shared with me how he felt on these diets, why he transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle, how it felt to become more compassionate towards other life, and how he encourages healthy eating habits at home with his wife and two children. If you’d like to hear more from Jeremy, check out Episode #27 or connect with him on Instagram (@bar_night).

16 Jan 2022 | Diet and Mental Health | Nutrition Scientist Megan Lee | 01:06:02
In Episode #187, I sat down with Megan Lee to talk about food and mental health. Megan is a career researcher, scientist, and academic at Bond University on the Gold Coast here in Australia. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychological science (with honours) and her PhD in nutritional psychiatry is currently under examination. She has published research on food and mood, body image, disordered eating, dietary patterns, mental health, and occupational stress in academia. Following some back-and-forth on Twitter about the representation of one of her studies in the media, I invited her onto the show.
Some of the topics covered in this conversation include the current scientific understanding of the effect our diet can have on our mental health, anti-depressant medications and the lack of lifestyle approaches to dealing with mental health, the results from her study of plant-based eaters and depression, and the media’s misrepresentation of the study’s results.

23 Feb 2020 | A Plant-Based Ketogenic Diet for Diabetes | Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH | 02:00:38
In Episode #94, I sat down with Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, for a second episode – this time for a deep dive into the plant-based ketogenic diet and whether or not it’s a good option for people with insulin resistance and diabetes. We talked about why a low-carb diet is popular for diabetics and frequently recommended by doctors, and Cyrus and Robby shared the philosophy of the high-carb Mastering Diabetes program.
We also discussed a new 2019 study looking at a traditional ketogenic diet, whether a ketogenic diet can truly reverse diabetes, who may be suited to a plant-based ketogenic diet, and much more. Whether you have diabetes or not, I think you will still find this episode interesting. Plus, with the rates of diabetes skyrocketing (particularly prediabetes and type 2 diabetes) it’s highly likely that most people listening will know someone who is affected by this disease. Stick around until the end for my summary where I bring together the take-home messages.

09 Jun 2019 | Gut Health and Quitting a Plant-Based Diet | Dr Will Bulsiewicz | 02:04:26
In Episode #70, I sat down with gastroenterologist Dr Will Bulsiewicz to talk about those who’ve quit their plant-based lifestyles and the gut-health issues they have described. This episode was inspired by a number of plant-based influencers who bailed on plant-based eating recently and reintroduced animal products back into their diet. I listened to all of their stories and noted many similar patterns, including that none of them were qualified in medicine, nutrition, or dietetics, and that many people in the comments were second-guessing their own diets. I don’t think everyone needs a degree to talk about a subject; however, we need to be careful how certain information is shared and who we, as individuals, go to for qualified information. So with that in mind, I thought it was really important for me to get a world-leading gastroenterologist on the show to make sense of what’s going on here.
The case study we discuss in this episode is 100% hypothetical. It’s the typical journey spoken about by these influencers, but it isn’t about any single person in particular, and I think you will see by the way the conversation goes that we both have absolute empathy for anyone struggling with their diet. To kick things off, Dr B and I recap Episode #17, where we had an in-depth conversation on the importance of the microbiome for our overall health. If you haven’t listened to that episode, I highly recommend you jump back and listen to it – it’s the most listened-to episode of this show to date.
Enjoy, friends.

16 Jun 2019 | How You Can Prevent Chronic Disease | Dr Dean Ornish | 01:10:11
In Episode #71, I sat down with one of the pioneers of lifestyle medicine, Dr Dean Ornish. Dr Ornish is best known for the randomised controlled trial ‘the Lifestyle Heart Trial’, where he was able to demonstrate that cardiovascular disease could not only be halted in its tracks but, in many cases, actually be reversed. In this exchange, we talked about why we see such a high rate of chronic disease in Western populations and the steps that you can take to genuinely take control of your health.
We discussed the Lifestyle Heart Trial and what we can learn from the intervention and results, as well as what’s causing cardiovascular disease in the first place and why some people refute the findings that associate saturated fat and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with cardiovascular disease. Dr Ornish also shares his thoughts on the Atkins, keto, and paleo diets and what various approaches fail to address when it comes to healthy eating habits. You’ll also find out what he uses clinically and believes is the healthiest human diet in the world!

25 Sep 2021 | Activating Your Inner Guidance | Light Watkins | 01:14:40
In Episode #163, I sat down with Light Watkins to talk about his new book Knowing Where to Look, living with ‘less’, meditation, the still small voice, and much more.
My hope is that Light provides you with inspiration to find the time to do exactly that – to quieten the mind so you can learn more about who you are and what you want to do with your life. I’ve been doing this imperfectly for a long time now and it’s been enormously beneficial.

19 Jun 2019 | Being Unapologetically You | Sjana Elise Earp | 01:29:30
In Episode #72, I sat down with plant-based yogi Sjana Earp to chat about yoga, healing, transformation, and living with purpose. This is a different exchange to the more scientific episodes on this show, yet equally as informative and thought provoking in its own unique way.
Sjana shares her struggles with mental health – bullying, anxiety, and depression – and her strategies for overcoming negative feelings. We also discussed what yoga means to her, her relationship with food, and why she transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle. We cover a lot of topics in this conversation, including social media, what purpose is, breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues, and sustainability and looking after our planet.

I’ve got to say, I have a real soft spot for Brian, and there’s a fair chance that after this episode you will too. His energy is contagious, and he really is an absolute breath of fresh air, bringing light moments to an often very dark and negative conversation to spread his message of compassion for all.

01 Apr 2024 | Discovering the true currency of life | Robin Sharma | 01:52:04
Episode #307. According to Robin Sharma, eight factors define wealth – and only one of them is money. Join me in today’s episode as I sit down with this leadership expert and bestselling author to unpack what it truly means to be wealthy.
You’ll learn about what happy people have in common, how to find more fulfilment, and how to perform a full reset on your life. In any conversation considering the relationship between money and happiness, it’s important to note that not everyone has the time or resources to commit to self-improvement. If you’re in this camp, you’re far from alone. My advice would be to take the core principles discussed in this episode and find some goals that are reasonable for you. 13 Jun 2022 | Using science to build muscle and grow stronger | Dr Stuart Phillips | 01:37:45
In Episode #210, Professor Stuart Phillips returns to expand on our conversation about using science to improve training outcomes.
One very common criticism of a plant-based diet is that it’s difficult to meet protein requirements due to both quantity and quality of plant-based protein sources. “Evidence” provided for this often centres around amino acid profiles, linking back to the DIAAS and PDCAAS protein scoring systems. Today, Professor Stuart Phillips offers clarity on this topic and much more useful information on what to consume, in what form, and when.
In this episode, we cover a whole suite of information that is highly relevant and applicable for those looking to improve their training outcomes. In addition to briefly revisiting the basics of protein consumption, we discuss distribution and timing, protein needs for older people, and protein quality scoring systems. We also dive into supplementation for those looking to improve performance and muscle protein synthesis, including caffeine, beta alanine, nitrates, creatine, omega-3s, and hormones.
Specifically, we discuss:
Intro (0:00)
Protein distribution (1:20)
Scoring systems for protein (11:13)
Supplements for performance (28:08)
Sodium bicarbonate (43:40)
Nitrates (51:29)
Creatine (56:10)
Omega 3s (1:05:25)
Hormones & protein synthesis (1:10:30)
Aging & muscle gain (1:13:20)
Exciting new studies (1:24:12)
Outro (1:27:19)
To listen to my previous conversation with Professor Philips, head to Episode #190. You can also learn more about him via the McMaster University profile, and connect with him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

29 Jan 2021 | Omega-3s and Brain Health | Drs Dean and Ayesha Sherzai | 01:34:15
In Episode #117, I sat down with Drs Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, leading neurologists who specialise in cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s. Recently, Dean and Ayesha performed a thorough review of the literature to find out how important omega-3s are for brain function and whether or not we should be taking them. They ended up splitting this review into two parts: one covering pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and adolescence and the other covering adulthood.
In this episode, we break down their findings with the goal of helping you understand what omega-3s are, where we get them from and whether we should consider supplementation. It was a pleasure to have them back on the show. I love everything that they are about and I’m sure you’re going to find this a very informative episode. 01 Oct 2021 | Ethics of Eating Animals | Seb Alex | 00:17:54
In Episode #164, a throwback to Episode #88, we hear Seb Alex’s thoughts on the ethics of eating animal-based foods. As you know, I usually like to keep the topics of nutrition and ethics separate, but at the same time I think it’s important for us to be aware of the impact our food choices have on the world around us, including the non-human animals we share the planet with.
I hope you enjoy the episode. Be sure to keep an eye out for Seb’s new podcast launching soon.

In Episode #138, we hear from David Katz, MD, about eating for optimal health. In a world of diet extremes and dogma, Dr Katz offers a much-needed voice of reason. The question that I put to Dr Katz was ‘what is the optimal diet for human health?’
This is a condensed version of his earlier episode on the show, ‘Can we say what diet is best for health?’ (#108). 29 Jun 2019 | Truly Reversing Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes | Robby and Cyrus from Mastering Diabetes | 02:34:16
In Episode #74, I sat down with Robby and Cyrus from Mastering Diabetes to chat about diabetes (type 1, 1a, pre-, and type 2) and the role that nutrition plays in insulin resistance. We go through the body of scientific literature and explain what causes insulin resistance and how to actually reverse it. We talked about the difference between low-carb, ketogenic-type diets and high-carb, low-fat diets for insulin resistance, and what truly reversing insulin resistance actually means – specifically the difference between reversing insulin resistance and managing blood glucose control.
Strap yourselves in – this is a long one (2.5 hours). But I guarantee that by the end of it you will have learned so much about diabetes and will finally understand the mechanism that causes insulin resistance, how to reverse it, and how to improve health outcomes. This understanding is important not only for people with diabetes but also for anyone looking to better their health, particularly anyone who is overweight (millions of people have undiagnosed prediabetes). Insulin resistance is a spectrum, and eating to promote optimal glucose tolerance means you will be able to enjoy some of the most healthful food groups in the world associated with longevity.

29 Feb 2020 | Plant-Based Nutrition during Pregnancy, Infancy, and Breastfeeding | Whitney English, RD | 02:19:39
In Episode #95, I sat down with Whitney English, registered dietician, to talk about plant-based nutrition during pregnancy, infancy, and breastfeeding (lactation). Whitney, along with her partner Alex (also a registered dietician), are the founders of Plant-Based Juniors – an online resource that brings evidence-based nutrition information specific to these stages of life to the public.
In this episode, we covered the benefits of a plant-based diet during pregnancy and infancy; specific nutrients of focus during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and infancy, including recommendations for supplementation; and breast milk versus formula and different formula options. We also discussed introducing solids, picky eaters, and much more. This is an episode I have wanted to do for a couple of years now. It’s quite a comprehensive conversation, so if this is a topic that’s relevant to you, I highly recommend grabbing a pen and paper and listening in a quiet, comfortable space free from distractions.

27 Oct 2022 | Cholesterol, metabolic health and heart disease | Dr Alan Flanagan and Danny Lennon | 02:27:39
In Episode #231, I sit down with Dr Alan Flanagan and Danny Lennon to examine cholesterol, statins, the ketogenic diet, and longevity. Dr Alan Flanagan and Danny Lennon address whether cholesterol matters if you’re metabolically healthy, why our veins don’t get atherosclerosis, and why our body makes cholesterol if it’s “bad for us”. They also offer advice on dietary adjustments you can make regardless of your dietary pattern, claims by social media “health gurus”, and much more.
LDL cholesterol has been making waves on social media in recent years. With some diet camps making bold claims about its relevance and the apparently open-ended nature of the evidence, many folks are no doubt left unsure of how important cholesterol levels really are. In this episode, I’m joined by Danny Lennon and Dr Alan Flanagan to consider the role and importance of LDL cholesterol as we recap what the literature says.
Specifically, we discuss:
Intro (0:00)
Basics of Cardiovascular Health (4:29)
ApoB for Predicting Disease (12:18)
Heart Disease: Where things go wrong (23:23)
What Causes Artery Damage? (38:47)
Paul Saladino Claims (50:36)
Is low cholesterol a problem? (1:04:07)
Future of Gene Editing (1:27:12)
Veins vs Arteries (1:32:28)
Diet Claims (1:41:08)
Healthy Keto Diet (1:54:08)
MCT Oil (2:00:02)
Healthy Fats (2:03:28)
Final Thoughts (2:09:54)
Outro (2:19:05)
You can find Dr Alan Flanagan on Instagram, and learn more about Alinea Nutrition at https://www.alineanutrition.com/. Listen to his previous appearances on the show in Episode #159, Episode #225, and Episode #227.

08 Mar 2020 | Game Changer | Nimai Delgado | 01:19:16
In Episode #96, I sat down for a catch up with plant-based pro bodybuilder Nimai Delgado. Having recently been in Los Angeles for almost 3 weeks, it was great to catch up with Nimai and hear how things have been with him since our previous episodes. This one’s quite a casual conversation with no real direction, as I already covered his story back in Episode #3. But if you know of Nimai, you’ll be well aware of what a breath of fresh air his humble and gracious personality is. I certainly love catching up with him and am grateful to have him as a good friend.
Some of the things we cover in this relatively shorter episode are bits and pieces about The Game Changers, his current training programme, paying the rent with cardio, his business interests, his daily rituals, training Lewis Hamilton, and more.

29 Apr 2024 | Is high cholesterol on a keto diet always a problem? | Dave Feldman and William Cromwell, Md | 03:12:41
Some people follow a ketogenic diet seeking to lose weight, feel more energised, or gain control over their eating habits. Others may turn to this diet in an effort to treat conditions such as epilepsy, bipolar disorder, diabetes and inflammatory diseases. Regardless of their reasoning for adopting this eating pattern, a key question remains: is there ever an instance where having high LDL cholesterol levels on a ketogenic diet can be safe? In Episode #311, I’m joined by Dr William Cromwell, MD and Dave Feldman to explore this question.
In this discussion, Dr William Cromwell and Dave Feldman share their professional opinions on whether high cholesterol on a keto diet is a problem. We investigate where their opinions align and where they differ, where Dave’s hypotheses diverge from the norm, and what we do and don’t know with the available evidence. We also explore the significance of ApoB, lifespan and healthspan considerations, research Dave is currently conducting, and much more.

16 Jan 2019 | Leaving a Positive Mark on the World | Pop Star Benny Cristovao | 01:37:55
In Episode #51, I had the absolute privilege of sitting down with European pop sensation Ben Cristovao or ‘Benny Cristo’ as he goes by. Ben is a man with an extreme amount of raw talent, a strong work ethic, and steel-like determination to fulfil his potential. But despite his impressive résumé of achievements, the lasting impression on me from this conversation was Ben’s thought processes and overall state of consciousness. He has an incredible story, and where many would be sidetracked by the notoriety of the pop music industry, Ben uses his influence to leave a positive mark on the world.
In this episode, we talked about Ben’s family history and where he grew up, what his diet was like as a kid, how he got into singing, and his achievements as a music artist and athlete. He shared the moment he decided to change what was on his plate and the typical foods he eats now, as well as how he uses social media to spark conversations and promote positive change in his community.
Enjoy, friends.

In Episode #143, the second of a two-part series, we hear from three gastroenterologists – Dr Sarina Pasricha, Dr Alan Desmond, and Dr Will Bulsiewicz – about how to optimise gut health. 01 Feb 2019 | Pro Bodybuilding on a Plant-Based Diet | Torre Washington | 01:28:46
In Episode #53, I sat down with Torre Washington to talk about his journey, how he got into bodybuilding, and what it’s like being a plant-based bodybuilder. We intended to record this episode in the USA; however, our worlds collided a little earlier than planned, so we recorded it in Byron Bay.
As well as discussing some of the places we ate during our time in Byron Bay, we dove into Torre’s childhood years, his bloodlines, and what the Rastafari culture means to him. We talked about his journey to becoming a pro bodybuilder; his diet, past and present (and yes, I asked the infamous question about protein); and coexisting with people who don’t follow plant-based diets.

18 Apr 2020 | Overcoming Adversity and Seeking New Challenges | Rich Roll | 01:18:47
In Episode 99 I sit down for a second time with ultra athlete Rich Roll to talk about the humble beginnings of his show, which is now one of the world's leading podcasts in the education and wellness space, and what it feels like to have now released over 500 episodes into the wild.
We cover a bunch of other topics too, including overcoming adversity and seeking out new challenges, that I think you will also find interesting. Of course anyone who know's Rich will be familiar with how beautifully he's able to articulate his experiences, thoughts and learnings for us all to benefit from. A craft of his that no doubt comes with decades of introspection and self work, and years behind the microphone conversing with a diverse range of interesting guests.
Please also note, as mentioned in the introduction this was recorded before LA went into social isolation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So if you see videos of us online from this episode, they were shot well and truly before there was any advice to practice social distancing.
Hope you enjoy friends. Be sure to connect with Rich on Instagram or Twitter, thank him for taking the time to have this conversation and if you haven't already, grab a copy of his book 'Finding Ultra' here.

03 Oct 2018 | From Sick and Tired to Thriving | Loni Jane | 01:55:28
In Episode #31 of The Proof podcast, I sat down with Loni Jane. Loni started sharing her journey pretty much as soon as Instagram was launched. She’s a great example of someone in very poor health who adopted a plant-based lifestyle and was able to turn her life around, both mentally and physically, to create a life of love, prosperity, growth, and wellness. Loni has now built a life that is in her control and on her terms, in stark contrast to her former life where she battled with excessive drinking, low self-awareness, poor nutrition, and essentially a depleted physical body.
I hope you enjoy this raw, candid, and authentic conversation covering Loni’s battle with deteriorating health and the difficulties she faced in transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. She also shares tips for pregnancy and motherhood from her personal experience, including how she worked with her doctors and what her kids eat. Connect with Loni on Instagram @lonijane.

11 Apr 2020 | Can We Slow and Reverse Ageing? | Dr David Sinclair | 01:53:21
In Episode #98, I sat down with Harvard professor Dr David Sinclair, PhD, to discuss the information theory of ageing, and in particular how we can slow down and perhaps even reverse the ageing process. In this conversation, we discussed chronological versus biological age, the role of genetics versus epigenetics in the ageing process, how long he thinks we may be able to live for, how our nutrition and other lifestyle factors affect the ageing process, and more.
This is a deep dive into the underlying mechanisms that take place on a cellular level as we age. It’s an exchange that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I hope you do too. Of course, in two hours it’s hard to cover the topic of ageing in its entirety, so I look forward to having David back on the podcast to dive even deeper in the future. You can also grab a copy of his book Lifespan online or in most book stores – it’s a fascinating read. Connect with David on Instagram or Twitter.

09 Feb 2019 | How Dietary Changes Can Positively Affect Your Way of Living | Erin Ireland | 01:44:01
In Episode #54, I sat down with Erin Ireland to talk about why she personally transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle and how this affected her business. This was a fascinating discussion about why Erin eventually changed the foods on her plate, how it’s been for her talking to friends and family about the benefits of plant-based foods, and how her personal lifestyle changes have influenced those around her.
One of the big changes for Erin was to her baking business, and she shared the biggest hurdles she faced during her personal and business transition. In this episode, expect to hear tips for transitioning to plant-based foods and for being an advocate of a plant-based lifestyle, as well as the common questions Erin gets about Roen’s diet, including supplements, foods, breastfeeding, etc.

04 Oct 2022 | How much protein do we need | Dr Stuart Phillips and Dr Christopher Gardner | 01:17:37
In Episode #228, I sit down with Dr Stuart Phillips and Dr Christopher Gardner for a discourse on how much protein we really need. We discuss nitrogen balance, lack of protein vs lack of exercise, and protein restriction. We also cover protein quality, satiety, and environmental considerations. Recommended daily intake (RDA) is a key factor in this conversation, with discussion points including its definition, the studies used to inform it, and whether you should eat above it.
There is ongoing conversation about protein requirements across all eating patterns, with this contentious topic often sparking debate on social media. With protein regularly used as a marketing tool or to push an agenda, many online sources are diluted and separated from the evidence. Dr Gardner and Dr Phillips – both from different fields – have recently taken varying stances on protein, engaging in a Twitter dialogue. In this episode, we bring both of their informed perspectives to the table, and ask: how much do their opinions really differ?
Specifically, we discuss:
Intro (0:00)
Analyzing the RDA for Protein (3:13)
What is Optimal? (17:36)
Dr. Gardner’s Approach to Protein (22:25)
Aging & Muscle Preservation (33:38)
How much is TOO much? (38:32)
Plant Protein (44:21)
Environmental Concerns (56:54)
Satiety (1:01:52)
Outro (1:07:24)

09 Oct 2021 | Is Plant-Based Meat Healthy? | Christopher Gardner, PhD | 01:21:49
In Episode #167, I sat down with Stanford Professor Christopher Gardner to chat about his recent SWAP-MEAT trial that compared plant-based meat to animal-based meat.
If you’re wondering how healthy plant-based burgers and sausages are relative to their organic animal-based counterparts (yes, he compared against organic animal products), then I am sure you will find this episode interesting and thought-provoking. We also touched on another recent study that compared the nutrient makeup of plant-based meat to animal-based meat.

11 Jul 2022 | Is fructose driving metabolic disease? | Dr Richard Johnson | 02:11:37
In Episode #215, I’m joined by Dr Richard Johnson to discuss obesity, fructose, and metabolic disease.
“Fructose” has become something of a fear word in modern diet culture. It is often positioned as the villain, without the in-depth breakdown of where we are sourcing this fructose and the quantities it is consumed in. Similarly, the relationship between health and obesity is hotly contested. Dr Richard Johnson sits down with me today to clarify the scientific relationship between these factors, getting into what the evidence tells us.
In this episode, we take a broader view at the history of obesity before honing in on the biology and mechanisms. We discuss the ideology of obesity, whether you can be healthy at any size, and the degree of risk related to where you store fat. We also cover a variety of animal studies, sources of fructose, and how the modern food environment shapes our body weight.
Specifically, we discuss:
Intro (0:00)
History of Obesity (2:30)
Body Fat & Health Span (10:36)
Causes & Behavioral Patterns (23:55)
Fructose vs Excess Calories (38:18)

Dr David Jenkins answers this question and much more in today’s episode.
In this episode, we dig into cholesterol and the health implications of sub-optimal levels. We discuss the Portfolio Diet, weight loss, and the current research on cholesterol. Dr Jenkins also shares his recommendations on how and what to eat for optimal cholesterol levels, as well as how medication compares to a lifestyle approach.
