25 Aug 2023 | Dr Isabelle Hamley: Brexit, reconciliation and encountering God through his Church | 00:48:39
Former chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Isabelle Hamley is on a mission to normalise the subject of mental health within the church. It's a subject she's familiar with, having dealt with anorexia as a teenager, and an abusive childhood home environment which resulted in PTSD. In the midst of these challenges, she found solace in a vibrant Christian community in her home nation of France, who loved her and cared for her. Dr Isabelle felt called to Christian ministry as young as 16 but did not immediately pursue it due to her church's lack of women leaders at the time. She later moved to England for a master's degree and trained as a probation officer, which helped her apply Christian theology to tough real-world situations. But in the aftermath of the Brexit vote, Dr Isabelle said she felt "profoundly unwelcomed", with her children experiencing xenophobia at school. Nevertheless, she is committed to reconciliation and ecumenical relations, seeking empathy and understanding with those she disagrees with.
Dr Isabelle Hamley's latest book, Struggling with God's Mental Health and Christian Spirituality, is available now

06 Dec 2024 | Rico Tice on Evangelism | 00:53:25
Evangelist Rico Tice had a classically English boarding school upbringing but his early life was more international. Born in Chile he grew up in Africa, later attending Sherbourne boarding school in Dorset in the sixties and seventies which he describes as 'tough' and 'Darwinian'.
Like many men of his generation it instilled in him a sense of duty. After his Godfather died in a climbing accident he began to think about mortality and God. He became a Christian, actively evangelising in school which led to bullying and repressed lifetime trauma.
Earlier this year Tice left the Church of England as a Minister, saying it has abandoned its Biblical views on sexuality. He now runs Christianity Explored Ministries which aims to help people tell others about their faith.
In this wide-ranging conversation with Christianity Magazine Editor Sam Hailes we hear about his early life story, his views on evangelism, the state of the church and what he makes of Russell Brand's conversion.
Rico Tice is also the host of the Premier Christian Radio podcast The Bible Explored.

16 Jun 2023 | Peter Oborne on being Anglican, the lack of integrity in politics and what Christians get wrong about Islam | 00:49:58
The British journalist and author of The Fate of Abraham: Why the West is Wrong about Islam talks to Premier Christianity's Megan Cornwell about his appreciation for traditional Anglican Christianity. For Peter Oborne, the story of The Good Samaritan is central to his understanding of both Christ's mission, and the duty of Christians today. Addressing what he sees as the decline of integrity in British politics, Oborne associates this trend with the diminishing role of Christianity - and religion generally - in public life. He believes that society needs a spiritual refreshment. Oborne also talks about his well publicised resignation from The Daily Telegraph newspaper and addresses the impact of the Iraq War on his perspective as a journalist.

In this deeply moving interview, the Christian author and former nurse, Catherine Campbell shares her incredible journey of faith, resilience, and divine assurance in the face of heartbreaking adversity. 20 Sep 2024 | Creationism as God's truth with Ken Ham | 00:52:00
Ken Ham grew up in Australia in a Christian household where biblical authority was king and the world was created by God in 6 days.
Aged just 24 he preached his first sermon countering the growing evolutionary teaching that theologians were beginning to incorporate into the story of Genesis.
After becoming a science teacher he went on to be CEO of Answers in Genesis, an apologist ministry for young earth creationism which teaches the first book of the Bible as literal truth, not just metaphorical stories. Ham's views aren't shared by all evangelicals, and in this interview he responds to common criticisms of his position.
Ham is now based in the US where he oversees two popular attractions: The Creation Museum and Ark Encounter which features a life-size 510-foot-long Noah’s Ark.
On today's podcast we'll hear how Ken's upbringing helps him counter challenges to his faith from scientists and rationalists and argues why all Christians should believe the literal truth of the Bible.

29 Mar 2024 | Aussie church planter Stephen McAlpine on why the gospel is 'suffer now, glory later' | 00:49:53
"Low grade, slow grade, slow cooked church changes you in ways you can't imagine." That's according to experienced church planter, author and cultural commentator Stephen McAlpine. In this interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Stephen argues that regular, habitual church attendance is vital. "If you say, 'we'll go to this service, but next week we won't go, and the week after that we have a sporting event...' don't be surprised that your teenagers don't end up Christian." Born in Belfast, Stephen has experience ministering across many nations including Northern Ireland, England and Australia, where he is now based. He's the author of Being the bad guys: How to live for Jesus in a world that says you shouldn't and most recently Futureproof: How to live for Jesus in a culture that keeps on changing (The Good Book Company). Much of Stephen's work is designed to help Christians in the West share the good news with a world that is increasingly antagonistic towards faith. The appropriate response to Christians being perceived as the 'bad guys', is not for us to become angry or dismayed, argues Stephen. "Let's own our stuff. We have divergent views from the mainstream culture about what human flourishing is about, and what sex and gender are about." It may be uncomfortable, but we're called to stand firm. After all the Gospel is "suffer now, glory later", he says. "You can't get away from that," he adds.

02 Feb 2024 | Jennie Allen: Preaching, therapy and the burden of 'platform' | 00:53:33
What happens when a Bible teacher with a global ministry loses her passion for scripture? That's just one of several thorny questions Jennie Allen has had to grapple with in recent years (the answer to that particular conundrum was found in a combination of "loosening up a little", prayer apps and watching The Chosen. She's now back to fine form). Jennie Allen is open, relaxed and unguarded during this interview, even when getting into another thorny issue of why an international Bible teacher can’t preach in her own church on a Sunday morning and, more importantly, why she’s OK with this. Now in her mid-40s, she seems confident in her calling and as enthusiastic as ever about communicating the life-changing hope of the gospel. Her books, which increasingly lean into popular psychology alongside biblical truth, seem to have helped her own discipleship as much as the audience she is speaking to. She's passionate about helping individuals grow in faith, especially the next generation. And it is the knowledge that she’ll be happy doing this in her living room, long after the platform she currently enjoys is no longer available, that has allowed her to let go of the perfectionism that once caused her such anxiety.

It's one of the best-known megachurches in America, producing worship songs that are sung by congregations around the world, but, according to Jenn Johnson, when it comes to the body of Christ, Bethel is probably akin to an armpit.
She says this in jest, of course, but if you’re looking for an up-close-and-personal account of the ministry, Johnson is your go-to. The 41-year-old has been leading worship in Redding, California, with her husband, Brian, since she was 18.
During that time, she has seen “crazy” supernatural phenomena, including the much-discussed gold dust that reportedly fell for hours during one church worship service. 03 May 2024 | Dr Aaron Edwards: The lecturer fired from a Bible College after tweeting on homosexuality | 00:51:40
These 47 words changed Dr Aaron Edwards’ life and career, potentially forever: “Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this [because] they’re busy apologising for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it’s true. This *is* a ‘Gospel issue’, by the way. If sin is no longer sin, we no longer need a Saviour.” That post on Twitter (now X) went viral within minutes, with many Christians calling for Dr Edwards to remove it and apologise. Among those who objected were his employers, a Methodist Bible college, who told the lecturer to take it down. When he refused, he was suspended and ultimately sacked. Is the case an example of "lefward drift" in evangelical institutions, as Dr Edwards alleges? Or is it simply a case of poor judgement and lack of wisdom on his part? In this interview, the former lecturer explains why he still stands by the tweet, and why he's decided to take Cliff College to employment tribunal.
Cliff College were given sight of this interview prior to it airing, and offered an opportunity to respond to the claims made. They declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation.

03 Nov 2023 | Francis Spufford: How the critically-acclaimed author came back to faith | 00:48:16
Francis Spufford is a child of his times. He was raised on a university campus by “serious and convinced” churchgoing parents, in an era when Christianity was “taken for granted” as part of most people’s ordinary lives. His teenage years began two decades in which God was absent. In his 30s, Spufford committed what he calls a “classic, destructive male mistake of midlife”. He politely declines to provide any further details other than explaining: “They are my shames, but other people’s privacy is involved.” That the crisis somehow led him back to God is both a miracle and a testament to the creative ways that a creative God breaks through into our everyday, he says. In this in depth interview with Premier Christianity's Emma Fowle, Francis unpacks some of his books, including the "sweary" Unapologetic and talks about why Christian art is sometimes a little bit rubbish.

21 Feb 2025 | Alister McGrath - Why we believe. | 00:52:42
Alister McGrath is many things, an academic, a historian, a writer, a theologian but above all he is an apologist.
McGrath was born in Belfast and went to study chemistry at Oxford University describing himself at the time as an 'aggressive atheist'. Whilst there he met Christians who were scientists but who were able to talk to him and debate his questions. Today, CARE campaigns on a variety of issues, from euthanasia to artificial intelligence and has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. In this interview the pair discuss various Christian attitudes to politics and Ross comments on how people of faith can ensure their voices are heard.

In this interview with Premier Christianity's Megan Cornwell, Shane shares the full story.
