Hello Product Bosses! We're excited to discuss something that we all have likely asked ourselves at some point, especially during our early business days. It's the question of having a business plan. If you're among those who believe that starting a business is synonymous with having a thorough business plan, we're here to tell you - that's not always the case! Being stuck in the traditional ideas of a business plan can often slow our progress. Our entrepreneurial journey since 2004 has taught us that you don't necessarily need a business plan to succeed. There have been countless instances where we ventured into new territories without a rigid business plan in hand. And guess what? We didn't let the lack of it stop us! So, if you're at the threshold of starting your business or considering developing a business plan after you've launched, know that it's not a must. During this episode, we'll delve into the five things that you genuinely need when you're starting a business or thinking about selling a product to your customers. So, forget about that business plan for a moment and join us as we discuss what truly matters when starting your product business. Resources:

24 Feb 2022 | 345. Selling with Video with Krista Mashore | 00:33:08
Video is one of the secret tools that can make all the difference in your marketing. It’s cheap, effective, and stats show that good video content can make all the difference to leveling up your sales. Krista Mashore is a top digital marketing consultant and our guest today. She’s here to give us the skinny on how you can use video to boost your business. Just knowing that we need to use video doesn’t mean we know how to properly utilize it. And starting out with video can be daunting, even though it shouldn’t be. It doesn’t need to be a full Hollywood production. A simple video showcasing your product – we talk about a seller who had an amazing hit with a video of one of her shirts hanging on a chandelier – can make all the difference. For those of you who are introverts and find the idea of being in front of the camera too scary to take the plunge, don’t let that become a crutch that prevents you from pushing yourself and reaching a new level of potential! For a lot of people, being an extrovert is a muscle that you can exercise and build. It doesn’t have to come naturally. Just don’t give up at the first hurdle. If you don’t believe us that getting video right is worth your while, listen to what Krista has to say in this episode. She teaches us that a landing page with video on your website will convert to sales 800% more than one without. That’s a mindblowing stat. Even more, an engaging video will perform better than highly produced, glossy content. So long as the video showcases your product or service effectively, that’s all that matters. Interruption marketing – that’s where you hook someone in while they’re casually browsing social media instead of actively looking for something to buy – is one of the most effective ways to market. And video is one of the best forms of interruption marketing out there. Remember that facts tell, but stories sell! Resources:

30 Dec 2021 | 327. Marketing Strategies for 2022 to Sell More | 00:48:07
Happy new year! We’re really, really, really excited for the year ahead (knock on wood). We want this to be a very big year for your business, which is why now is the time to make sure you don’t have all our eggs in one basket, and that you’re prepared for anything that 2022 might throw at you. The best thing you can do to level up, and take your business further than ever before, is to make sure you have an amazing marketing strategy. But if there’s one thing the last year has taught us about marketing, it’s that you can’t rely on just one stream. Your marketing strategy needs to look more like a spider web than a straight line. Any one specific website or platform could go down without warning (remember the Facebook shutdown of 2021?!), or they might change their algorithms (yes, we’re looking at you Instagram) in a way that prevents you from getting the traction you’re used to or rely on for income. It’s time to stop betting it all on social media and focus on POP marketing, instead. Don’t just use paid ads. Look at adding organic promotion into the mix, as well. Generate word-of-mouth buzz with the right people, collaborate with others, and start building those partnerships. There are so many ways to get your business in front of customers that don’t involve a spreadsheet, so why settle on just one? Bring a pen and paper for this extra informative episode of The Product Boss podcast to help make your 2022 your best year yet! Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! 30 Jun 2022 | 381. How You Should Really Be Using Social Media for Your Business | 00:37:08
If you’ve been following business coaches or anyone offering entrepreneurial advice online over the past ten years, you’ve probably been told—in no uncertain terms—that you need social media for your business. And yet, for many of us, social media just isn’t fun and we’re not seeing direct business results from it. So is it true? And if you need social media, how do you actually use it to see results? Whether you’re talking about Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or whatever platforms come out in the future, we’re going to dive into what social media is for, what it can do for your business, and what you should be posting. Things change very quickly on social media, so it’s hard to look at common advice from even just a year ago and apply it today. But let’s look at a kind of marketing that’s been around forever: TV commercials. Now, remember the last commercial you watched? They weren’t telling you to buy now. They were just trying to make you aware of the brand or product and paint a positive picture of what your life would look like with it. You still have to go to the store and find the product and put it in your cart and buy it, but you aren’t likely to do any of that if you’ve never heard of the brand before. That’s called brand recognition, and it’s what you need to be doing on social media today. In order to build brand recognition on social media, you need to:
It’s important that you get started with this process early because it takes time to build relationships. You aren’t going to see direct sales like so many people expect, but if you start establishing brand recognition and building trust now, come the holiday season, people will feel more comfortable buying from you. 15 Jul 2024 | 603. The #1 Lesson You Can Learn from Amazon Prime Day to Increase Your Sales in July | 00:15:38
Amazon Prime Day has arrived (well almost, since it technically kicks off tomorrow!), but if you’re wondering why Amazon holds Prime Day in July or why Walmart Deals happens in July or why people talk about Christmas in July, we’re actually digging into that today because there is a strategic reason behind it! So what’s the reason?! Well there’s been a long time saying that J months are slow for product-based business owners, especially in the month of July, because not a lot of people are looking to buy or spend money during that time. So Prime Day was created to incentivize people to buy more during a month they don’t typically shop in! In this episode, we dive deeper into what you can learn from Prime Day, how you can get your products on Amazon, if you want to, and how you can take advantage of Prime Day to create offers and promotions for your products, even if you aren't selling on Amazon! You don’t want to miss this episode. Resources:

16 Dec 2021 | 323. 6 Key Behaviors of Building a Leadership-Based Company Culture with Marcel Schwantes | 00:46:26
Marcel Schwantes is an international speaker, executive coach, and syndicated columnist attracting more than 1.5 million readers per month to his thought leadership pieces. His work has been featured in Inc., Time, Forbes, Business Insider, Fast Company, CNBC, and more global media outlets. He’s also the host of the wildly-popular podcast Love In Action, born out of Marcel’s belief that strong leadership and company culture start with human empowerment. The truth is, “employee engagement” is a really cold way of saying that you need to care for your employees. When you call it what it truly is – love – you start to see how those behaviors translate into good business outcomes. He gives us some incredible advice regarding how to grow and scale a small business without ruining the work culture. Surprise! It always comes back to leadership. When you’re hiring based on a shared set of values, rather than hiring as quickly as possible in order to grow, you see that those values actually scale rather well. We also talk about what sets apart the companies that make Monday-to-Friday drag and those that people love to work for, as well as the six distinct behaviors you can put into place to start seeding a healthy and happy culture. 15 Dec 2023 | 541. [MONEY TIPS] Why Am I Not Making Any Sales? | 00:09:06
Welcome back, Product Bosses! In this episode, we're tackling a common problem: Why aren't I making sales? We often overlook the simple yet crucial elements that can significantly impact our sales. This episode, inspired by your concerns, zeroes in on these key aspects. First, let's talk about clarity in what we're selling. Confusion is a sales killer. If potential customers are puzzled about our offerings, we're already at a disadvantage. It's vital that we make our products and services as clear and appealing as possible. Next, we focus on the conversion points. Where and how do our customers make a purchase? We need to ensure that these points are not only visible but also inviting and easy to navigate. A complicated or unclear buying process can deter even the most interested buyers. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we discuss audience. Do we have an audience to present our promotions and offers to? It's like the old saying goes, "If a tree falls in the woods and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?" The same applies to our products. No matter how great our promotion or offer is, without an audience, it's like it doesn't exist. We delve deep into these areas, providing insights and actionable strategies to help you understand your audience better, clarify your messaging, and optimize your conversion points. Join us as we unpack these elements and guide you towards more effective and successful sales strategies! Resources:

26 Feb 2024 | 563. TikTok Insider Gives Us the Scoop | 00:14:05
Have you thought about selling your products on TikTok? In this episode, we have a TikTok insider walk us through setting up a TikTok Store and using its affiliate program. The first thing you should know about getting a TikTok Store (not to be confused with TikTok Business) is that it can be quick and easy. It usually only takes a day or two for your TikTok store account to be approved and go live. Then you can simply link the Shopify account you already use to sell your products. TikTok will sync with your Shopify inventory on an ongoing basis. You also have the option to manually input your products to your TikTok store natively. Now let’s talk money. TikTok charges 2% plus thirty cents on transactions. The other money item: You can pay independent creators to market your products. There are two ways to do this: Shop Plan and Targeted Plan. In Shop Plan, you upload your product to the TikTok affiliate marketplace and then affiliates (TikTokers who have atleast 5,000 followers) can choose a product to market for you based on a sales-only commission. Targeted Plan is a little more involved– you can evaluate creators’ target audiences, success rate, etc., then choose one based on how well you think they fit your product. If you want to tap into the hot TikTok market, this episode is a can’t miss! Resources:

27 Jan 2022 | 335. Makers Gotta Make Money | 00:29:27
We tend to hear the same limitations over and over, specifically from our makers, which is why in today's episode, we want to make sure that you are thinking about things in a way that will benefit you and serve your business. Oftentimes we see this idea of the starving artist mentality in the maker community, either "you don't want to charge too much for something" or "maybe you don't find that there's value in it" or the most common one we hear is "it has to be made by me." As a handmade business, its really easy to allow this mentality to take over, but when it comes down to it, if you're getting stuck in the belief that other people can't do something the same way you can or people won't buy your product if it isn't made with your own two hands, then you'll eventually hit capacity and won't be able to scale. It's time to break some of these limitations down so that you can move forward with your business. The most common story we hear is, “I have to make all of my products with my own two hands.” Maybe this is you. Maybe you’ve built your brand identity around the idea of your products being handmade and unique. But, set down the rolling pin for a second and ask yourself, did you ever promise that those hands would only ever be yours? Chances are, your customers don’t care who’s making your product so long as it’s still made with care and held to the same high standard. So, is it really still worth your time to make every last thing yourself, or can you start scaling? This is only one example. At the end of the day, makers gotta make money! Your customers need and want your products, so it’s time to get over that starving artist mentality and step into a new mindset of being a true product boss. Tune in – let’s unpack why you shouldn’t let these common beliefs stand in your way. Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! Chances are, reaching $100k with your business is a lot more realistic than you think. You just need to start running things like a $100k business! Easier said than done, though, right? That’s why we’re laying out these five simple steps that can turn your business dreams into reality. The first step is simple: can you identify the product that works best in your lineup? The second is a little bit trickier, but still easy: are there any holes you can plug in your systems and processes? Where can you improve things? Once you do both of these, it’s all about upleveling your messaging, which can be as basic as making sure your product photography is on point. Last of all – and you’ll hear us talk about this again because we believe this is your true path to profit – leverage other people’s platforms. Collaborate, partner, and make use of services like Amazon and Etsy. This isn’t just about pointing you in the right direction. You’re going to come back to these easy steps, time and time again. 03 Jan 2022 | 328. From Taking the Leap from Adoption Journey to Business Growth with Erin Port of Simple Purposeful Living | 00:32:55
Our female founder this week is Erin Port, the Founder of Simple Purposeful Living, and one of our Masterminders. She took her engaged readers as a blogger, and her informed background as a teacher, and created a product that would give her audience value. Erin represents another inspiring story of someone reformatting their own personal journey into easy-to-apply lessons that people can take and apply to improve their own lives. Like most of us, she’s had past businesses and brands that didn't work out, so she knows all about self-doubt. She candidly shares with us the thoughts she had before launching Simple Purposeful Living, and how an encouraging bedtime nudge from her husband lit a fire in her that’s yet to burn out. It’s moments like that that truly drive her. Her voice glows as she describes her family as her why, how launching the brand and driving to financial success was all meant to fund the adoption of her son, and so much more. It’s clear her heart is in the most beautiful place. We talk about her humble origins, selling via Amazon, and overcoming those creeping thoughts of imposter syndrome. One of the most inspiring messages to take away from this episode is the impact joining the Mastermind has had on Erin, and how much benefit she saw from implementing the Best Sellers Secret Challenge and Multi-Stream Machine in her business. She believes (and we agree) that sharing ideas with others is one of the best things we can do to learn and grow as entrepreneurs. Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! Listen up, product bosses! Today’s episode is a must listen if your product business sales are down. We’re back with another coaching session, and this time we’re talking to Gina of Seasons Jewelry. Now Gina has been in my community for a long time and actually started her first product biz as a hobby! Fast forward to today, and Gina is now not only a full time product boss (goodbye corporate world!), but she also just recently acquired her second business which is where she had previously bought the jewelry for her side hustle product biz from (cool, right?). Her goal, like most product bosses, is to make more sales but she’s not quite sure where to start. In this episode, we dive into Gina’s current situation to figure out what she needs to do next, where she needs to focus, and ways she can really grow this business past the plateau that she feels she’s in. And even though Seasons Jewelry is a 39 year old business and a well established brand, this episode is a good reminder that sometimes you need to go back to the foundations, aka the basics, to identify what’s not working in order to figure out your next step forward, no matter what level your business is at. Join us as we dig deeper into Gina’s business, provide actionable tips, and help her- and you- figure out where to focus to start increasing those sales again. Let’s do this together! Resources:

Suzanne decided to take the leap and turn her baking passion into a profession. Her products were flying off the shelves and tasted delicious, but she lacked the systems to scale long term. She ran out of ingredients every day and felt she couldn’t increase volume without sacrificing quality and brand authenticity. We reflect on our transformational first session with Suzanne and the importance of mindset. With a bit of mindset work, Suzanne built the confidence to double her prices, which contributed to her success and ability to take bigger steps in hiring resulting in her being able to make more room for creative control and growth. You can hear in her voice how her confidence is growing by the minute, and her sales are reflecting that mindset shift. She’s even created a solid work/life balance, clocking out at 5pm every day to spend time with her family. The impact joining Mastermind has had on Suzanne is extraordinary. By getting out of her own way and throwing herself into the community aspect of Multi-Stream Machine and the Mastermind, she has broken through her self-limiting ceiling and ended 2021 as a multi six-figure business! 25 Apr 2022 | 362. Sharing Your Story with Kelly Kussman of Cayla Gray | 00:38:54
Kelly Kussman is one of our Masterminders and she’s doing amazing, motivating, and inspiring things as the founder of Cayla Gray, creators and sellers of clean, luxury brand fragrances. Her Small Biz Founders story will really resonate with you. Cayla Gray produces fragrances and candles, and when they say “clean,” they mean non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and no parabens. They have four core scents – all handmade in Arizona. Kelly started her career with a dream job out of college, selling cosmetics. Since then, she’s taken her passion and turned it into a successful business of her own. Kelly’s dad was an entrepreneur so she grew up around product bosses and always saw it as something exciting that she could aspire toward in her own life. It was scary to walk away from the security of that dream job, but she explains how she found the courage to do it, and why it was one of the best decisions she’s ever made. One of the things Kelly does an incredible job of is telling her brand’s story, and making those connections with her potential customers. As a business owner, you should be sharing your story repeatedly with your audience to build those connections, and draw potential customers into your brand. Knowing the reason why you started your business and being able to share that story with your customers really allows you to connect with and attract the audiences that you want to sell to! One of the reasons Kelly has had so much success with Cayla Gray is due to her ability to share her story and connect with her customers. Kelly also provides us with one final piece of business advice: “failure” is not a bad word! Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! 18 Apr 2022 | 360. Front-of-House vs. Back-of-House for Running Your Product Biz | 00:27:51
We’re still coming to you from our hotel room in Costa Rica, and our time here has inspired us to talk about the difference between front and back-of-house. These are hospitality terms, but the principles can be applied to all product businesses. Front-of-house is when you’re facing the customer. Think receptionists in a hotel or wait staff in a restaurant. In a product business, this could be your branding, customer service, or even your brick-and-mortar store. The front-of-house role has a human element to it, meaning that you are interacting with the customers, and making sure they are satisfied with your product and company. Back-of-house is more the operational side of things. In a hotel, this would be the cleaning staff, or, in a restaurant, it would be the chef working in the kitchen. In your business, “back of house” refers to pricing and financials, research and development, production and inventory, or shipping and fulfillment. When you start a business, you’re likely wearing all of the hats within your company. As you start to scale and grow, you’ll need to start delegating to reach that next level in your business. When you’ve reached this point, it’s time for you to decide what your zone of genius is within your company. By doing so, you’re able to really focus on what you’re doing instead of struggling to keep up with all the hats. If this episode resonates with you, you might also be at a point where you’re a perfect candidate for our new Product Biz Accelerator course. Check the resources section for details!
