03 Nov 202029 The Power Of Media Literacy - An Inside Look At How The Media Works and How To Be A Critical Thinker and Creator00:17:57

"Knowing who you are, what you stand for, and how you want to show up in the world is really important and that starts with understanding what's going on in the world and the impact you have in sharing  it." - Angela Chee

Did you know that it's media literacy week here in the United States?

Our media literacy is a vital skill we all need.  We need to be aware of the stories that we tell and the stories that we hear.

I believe the three most important skills we need to thrive moving forward is taking care of our mental health, being able to communicate effectively, and being media literate.

"You are the creators, so it's not just about what you consume, but also what you create -- and also what you share." - Angela Chee

So on today's show, we are taking a deep dive into the concept of media literacy. What is it and why it matters? Also, how can we understand it and the power you have once you do.

Listen in as I discuss what it was like to work as a journalist before social media, how the arrival of cable news changed the way we get our current events, and how to determine a credible source.

“People are getting their information that is curated by the talking heads of whatever network you watch.” - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • What media literacy is
  • How schemas affect our thoughts
  • What it was like to work in the news
  • How cable news changed the way we get news
  • How to discern credible news
  • How the news works

24 Aug 202148 The "No Pain, No Gain" Fallacy00:11:30

"Do we always have to suffer to achieve our goals?" - Angela Chee

What do we lose when we choose to believe in "no pain, no gain" at all costs?

I admit that growing up, I thought that working too hard was a badge of honor. Even as a young adult I fell into that all too common trap of believing that the last one to leave the office each day was winning a contest of some kind. Early on in my career, I believed that it was okay to be working seven days a week -- and I enjoyed all of it. Then I got burnt out.

This is an episode about reevaluating how we are programmed and when that starts to get in our way. We have to ask ourselves if we were brought up with this mentality, in which ways it served us, and in which ways it did not. What was the outcome?

“When is enough enough?” - Angela Chee

In today's show, we talk about what we lose when we choose to believe the common saying "no pain, no gain" at all costs, where the term comes from, and how to honor our boundaries.

"We can shift the culture, but it starts with us." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • How to honor your boundaries
  • Where does the term no pain, no gain come from
  • How to manage your productivity
  • What is a happy work-life balance
  • How to avoid burnout

"I needed to burn out before I stopped myself." - Angela Chee

19 Oct 202151 The Power of Commitment00:05:30

“In this age of insta-fame, what does it take to truly be successful?" - Angela Chee

What are you committed to?

Let this episode be your reminder to cultivate moments in your life that make you smile. My reminder happened at a Maroon 5 concert a couple of weeks ago. It inspired me to think about commitment; commitment to ourselves, commitment to our craft, commitment to our calling, and commitment to keep growing and evolving. Sometimes it takes a magical moment to be reminded that what matters the most are all the things behind the scenes that people don’t see.

“The key to success sometimes is commitment in the long-term.” - Angela Chee

In today's show, we talk about the power of commitment, how to stay motivated when no one is looking, and what it takes to get where you're going.

"Sometimes you don’t know what your soul needs until you experience it." - Angela Chee

01 Dec 202031 How To Shift Your Limiting Beliefs And Reduce Stress In Our New Virtual World00:13:57

"Virtual can be just as powerful and connected -- and can even give you more ways to be creative." - Angela Chee

What are you grateful for?

It is the week after Thanksgiving here in the United States. With everything that is happening around us, it can sometimes be all too easy to forget just how much there is to be grateful for.  I am grateful for you as a listener and for the technology that allows me to connect with you personally, to share with you, and hopefully inspire you to create positive change in the world.

But this episode isn’t all about gratitude. It is also about the power of shifting your limiting beliefs. During this time, we all need to shift our limiting beliefs about what is possible in our work and in our personal lives. It is time to create something new. How do we do that? In this episode, I outline three simple steps to get you back on track to being an effective communicator and leader.

“The power of virtual is so important right now." - Angela Chee

On today's show, we also talk about how to communicate on camera, the perks of doing virtual events, and how to keep your audience engaged online.

I discuss four things you can do immediately to reduce your work-related stress, how to adjust to a primarily virtual workplace, and why it helps to sometimes simply shake it off.

"Before we can take on new information and actually create tranformation or step up in our leadership or step up to own our power and our voice is that we have to honor our capacity." - Angela Chee

How to Shift Your Limiting Beliefs:

  1. Be aware of what your limiting beliefs are and when they come up.
  2. Interrupt the pattern when those voices come up. How are you going to do that?
  3. Create a new belief. What are you going to do instead?

Four Practical Tips to Reduce Work-Related Stress:

  1. Breathwork
  2. Shake it off
  3. Humming
  4. Focus words

"As humans, we want to hold back, we want to be tough so we hold it all in and it creates tension." - Angela Chee

“As I got older I realized how to stand my ground, respect myself, while also being able to have deeper conversations with people who are not like me - just so I can build connection and understanding." - Christina Blacken

How will we reinvent and thrive as our current systems and beliefs are being challenged? It’s a time for deep transformation.

24 Jan 202371 How to Embrace Not Being Ready00:08:35

"Downshifting your ambitions doesn’t necessarily mean you are throwing away your past or becoming a slacker. It may actually mean that you’ve finally recognized what it takes for achievement and ambition to be sustainable." - Dorie Clark

What does it mean to always be ready?

Today I talk about how to embrace not being ready. At the start of every new year, it can be all too easy to bog ourselves down with newly formed goals and deadlines, and plans. It can be much harder to purposefully slow down and simplify, but maybe that is just what we need right now. Maybe we don't need to always be ready.

"Maybe to start the new year, we don't need another goal or another list." - Angela Chee

In today's show, I talk about giving ourselves permission to slow down and times when the power of The Only can be both a blessing and a burden.  I share how I discovered my strong suit can also be my weakness and how we can all discover what doesn't serve us and let it go.

"Maybe we don't need more. Maybe we need different." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • How to embrace not being ready
  • What does it mean to always be ready
  • How to give yourself permission to slow down
  • What does real personal growth look like
  • Is it okay to not always be ready
  • When can the power of The Only be a weakness

She’s traveled the globe with her award-winning company Combustion working with top organizations like Google, Disney, Pepsico, Lenovo, TD Bank, Uber, and many more. And now she's put all of her tips, tricks, and tales of inspiration into a new book: Swagger - Unleash Everything You Are and Become Everything You Want.

"My definition of swagger is the ability to manifest who you really are and hold onto it in the face of all that psychological crap that's going to come for it." - Leslie Ehm

Leslie tells me the success in her life was a series of accidents, but digging deeper into her story I believe it’s because of her swagger — the bold way she moves forward with integrity despite challenges. In today's episode, Leslie shares her "Only" story and how she found her swagger. Hear stories about her purple mohawk, how she became a TV host in the U.K. by walking away from an opportunity, and more. We talk about how to manifest swagger, how ambition can hold us back, and how to rid ourselves of Imposter syndrome and shift our mindset.

09 Feb 202136 An Inside Look At Book Publishing And The Power Of Integrity with Jesse Finklestein - Co-founder Page Two Books00:57:25

"I hope there are a lot of prospective authors out there who really internalize your multidimensional concept of "The Only" and who start realizing that they have a concept that shines in that Only kind of way." - Jesse Finkelstein

What does it take to be an author today?

The Power Of The Only isn’t just about individuals. It is also about shifting old systems to carve a new path. It is about not being afraid to be "The Only" to create what’s next.  And that is what's happening right now. "Onlys" like you are creating what’s next.  Industries, old structures, and traditional ways of thinking are being disrupted. That’s what Jesse Finkelstein, Co-Founder of Page Two Books, has been doing in the publishing industry for years. Her work is evolving the traditional publishing model to help thought leaders, subject matter experts, and organizations publish leading non-fiction books.

She has held several management roles at publishing houses, including COO of D&M Publishers and Associate Publisher at Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter. Despite the pandemic, Page Two is continuing to grow.  They recently built an in-house audiobook program and announced a new global distribution program. Jesse shares how a devastating career moment gave her the foundational courage to launch her company and how a phone call from another “Only” in the industry gave her the ability to see the gift in the challenge.

"I thought that I was in it for the books for a long time, but I realized it's actually about the authors." - Jesse Finkelstein

In today's show, we talk about what it takes to be an author, the differences between traditional and hybrid publishing, and what inspired Jesse to create a company that supports authors by sharing their Only with the world.

19 Apr 202261 The Power of Women’s Brains and Aging with Dr. Louann Brizendine00:45:52

"Biology is destiny unless you know what it's doing to you." - Dr. Louann Brizendine

Today's guest, Dr. Louann Brizendine, New York Times Bestselling Author of "The Female Brain" and "The Male Brain" says it's time for a new and radically positive understanding of aging for women.

In this episode, she shares actionable science-backed steps for increasing longevity and well-being from her new book "The Upgrade-How Women's Brain Gets Stronger and Better In Mid-life and Beyond."

Dr. Brizendine went through her own struggle with her health while she was studying medicine as an undergraduate. Following her experience of being ignored and disbelieved, she was inspired to work in neuropsychiatry and has been on a mission ever since to help women understand their bodies and brains so they can be empowered.

While studying the differences between males and females as a student, she found that she didn't agree with the general attitudes that only men's bodies should be studied and that female hormones would interfere with accurate results. Her belief that our biological differences should be celebrated made her somewhat of an Only in her field at the time-- and that's what inspired her to persevere.

Listen in as Dr. Brizendine shares her Only story, how she overcomes her challenges, and why women's lives get better in the second half.  We also talk about the four phases of The Transition, what women can do in the pre-transition phase of menopause to optimize their health, and the simple move you can do every day to help your brain.

"I really learned what it's like as a patient not to be listened to." - Dr. Louann Brizendine

Louann is also the Lynne ad Marc Benioff Endowed Chair in Clinical Psychiatry a the University of California San Francisco and founder of the UCSF’s Women’s Mood and Hormone Clinic. She completed her degree in Neurobiology at UC Berkeley, graduated from Yale School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Harvard Medical School.

"Male and female brains are more alike than different." - Dr. Louann Brizendine

"When we discovered that the need in the industry was so strong, that created opportunity - and that made people excited." - Marcia Davies

As the world scrambles to cope with an uncertain and rapidly evolving landscape-how can you step into your leadership and serve right now?

Today’s episode features Marcia Davies - Chief Operating Officer of the Mortgage Bankers Association on The Power Of Inclusive Leadership, Communication and Community in Navigating Uncertain Times.

She shares how she and her organization are navigating this change and managing the ripple effects in their industry and how you can apply that to your industry. She also talks about why communication, compassion and inclusion are so important right now.

"As we grow, we can seize the opportunity to help others grow." - Marcia Davies

Marcia is also the founder of mPower-Promoting Opportunities for Women to Extend their Reach - MBA's networking platform for women in the real estate finance industry. Like many organizations, several of their upcoming live events are now canceled, but the online platform they created will continue to thrive. We talk about the power of virtual events and how the connection will be more relevant than ever.  She shares HER power of the only story and how being called an "un-vice-president”, taking risks, and not always fitting in, lead to even more connection with her team and confidence and fulfillment in her career.  She also talks about how she overcame “imposter syndrome” and how being able to deal with conflict, have difficult conversations and bringing others up with you is key to stepping into your leadership.

Marcia has worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and at Freddie Mac, where she spent more than 21 years in a variety of officer positions.  She’s received numerous awards, including the silver Stevie Awards for women in business "2018 Maverick of the Year", the National Association of Women in Real Estate Businesses' "Industry Revolutionary Award", Five Star’s "Legacy Award" winner and named "A Woman of Influence" by Housing Wire and more.

"In order to create real change we need to shift the systems and the structures -- but it starts with us." - Angela Chee

Where did our beliefs come from and how do they shape how we act and react? Did you know that International Women's Day was started back in 1911? A global day celebrating the social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women, International Women's Day is also a call to action for celebrating women's equality. I have been thinking a lot about this year's theme: #BreakTheBias so in today's episode, I talk about the changes we're seeing for women's equality on the corporate level this year and the ways that businesses are celebrating the holiday. I also talk about ways that women can celebrate the day at their companies and how we can all take steps to make meaningful change for equality.

09 Dec 202269 The Power of Self Belief, Using Your Voice & Rising with Journalist and Media Executive Charity Elder00:55:12

"Don't let anyone take away your voice. What you have to say is important." - Charity Elder

Where does our strength come from and how can we cultivate our strengths?

Today’s guest Charity Elder is an award-winning journalist and media executive with more than 20 years of experience working in and leading broadcast and digital newsrooms. She is also the author of the new book Power: The Rise of Black Women in America.

In 2020, Charity was a senior adviser to the Mike Bloomberg presidential campaign, strategizing ways to engage the Black community. She was also profiled for NYC Media’s Vanguard: Women in Media, and in 2016 she was on Folio magazine’s list of top women in media.

"You won't be able to grow and change as an individual without having a central knowledge of who you are." - Charity Elder

In this episode, Charity shares how she and other Black women rise to the challenge of building communities and creating lives of meaning and joy. She also talks about where her self-confidence comes from and why she believes that it's the best time in history to be a Black woman in America.

Listen in as Charity shares her experience as a leader in boardrooms and newsrooms. She says that it's important to use your voice even when it diverges from those around you because your voice and ideas are important.

"When someone is talking over you or diminishing you in some way, you stop them in that moment, calmly and clearly." - Charity Elder

Show Notes:

  • Where do Black women get their strength
  • What is the story of Black women in America

03 Jun 202017 The Power Of Inclusive Leadership with Tina Shah Paikeday - Head of Global D & I Advisory, Russell Reynolds and Associates00:40:43

"When we bring diversity to the table, we get to a better solution." - Tina Shah Paikeday

There is a lot of division in our world right now. How will we work, serve, and thrive as our current systems are being challenged?

We need diverse voices who own their voice and their power, and nobody knows that better than our guest this week, Tina Shah Paikeday.

As a senior member of the Leadership & Succession team at Russell Reynolds and Associates, Tina leads the firms’ Global Diversity & Inclusion advisory services. Russell Reynolds and Associates is one of the top leadership advisory and search firms in the world. Tina's work includes recruiting Chief Diversity Officers and developing inclusive leaders and inclusive culture transformation.

“The work around inclusion and inclusive leadership has really shifted towards not only a focus on 'how can we empower the workforce', but then how can we use inclusive leadership for business advantage.” - Tina Shah Paikeday

On today's show, Tina shares her own Power of The Only story. Tina grew up with two cultures shaping her identity. Navigating the dual worlds is what has helped her achieve success - but it has been a journey to discover that strength. We both talk about what we did to hide our identity in our early years. Tina shares the moment she began to uncover her story and realize the power in creating more inclusive environments.

Tina and I also talk about the top three areas of focus for companies right now to create more successful leaders, what you can do to be more inclusive, and why knowing your story and being able to share it is an important part of showing up as a leader.

"The last frontier with most of the executives leading in this area is development - development of women, of minorities, of people of different backgrounds - because we don't see them in the senior leadership positions at the same rate they're represented lower down in the organization." - Tina Shah Paikeday

Show Notes:

  • How diversity is increasing in the workplace
  • Current trends in workplace diversity
  • How to ensure diversity at work
  • What experience is needed to get hired for a management position
  • What minorities can do to increase their chances of being promoted
  • How minorities can advocate for themselves at work
  • How leaders can encourage diversity at work
  • What leaders can learn from Onlys at work

"The work that we do at Russell Reynolds is really helping at the boardroom level given the current California legislation as well as the global legislation on the topic." - Tina Shah Paikeday

3 Pieces of Advice or Action Steps:

  1. Know who you are
  2. Understand how others perceive you
  3. Live your full potential by celebrating who you are

"The power of the only to me is recognizing the fact that all of us are actually 'onlys' and that each of us walks our own unique paths no matter what our demographic background is." - Tina Shah Paikeday

08 Mar 202138 Celebrating Women and The Power of Resilience00:09:17

"From challenge comes change." - Angela Chee

How do we continue to thrive and move forward when the whole world feels tired?

This past year of The Power of The Only podcast we have been on a beautiful journey, exploring new conversations with amazing guests. I hope our episodes this past year have empowered you to step more fully into your power of The Only! I know I have grown a lot this past year. Each episode means a lot to me. I have enjoyed reflecting back on the topics and events of 2020 -- and can’t wait to share more with you.

We launched on International Women’s Day last year on March 8th and it’s that time of the year again. It's time to celebrate women and that's what today's episode is all about. A challenged world is an alert world. We can choose to challenge and call out bias and inequality and we can choose to seek out and celebrate the achievements of other women. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

“This next phase requires clarity and a new understanding of resilience and wellbeing for ourselves, our companies, and our world.” - Angela Chee

On today's show, we celebrate some wise words from women who were past guests on The Power Of The Only, we redefine what it means to be resilient, share my own resilience challenge and I share how to understand the emotional phases of change.

  • How to understand the emotional phases of change
  • How to use the Kubler Ross Change Curve
  • How to continue to harness the power of The Only

“Right now we're kind of in the age of the only, it’s time for us to use that power to start creating what we are here to create!”- Ali Brown

Have you heard the call? It’s a like a dog whistle went out and those that can hear it hear it. And it’s time for many of us to answer that call, but how do you stay focused and really step into your leadership and your legacy.

Today’s guest has always heard the call, but with her latest venture she’s stepping up even bigger into her legacy play.

"There are times in your life that no one will understand your decisions but you." - Ali Brown

On today's show, we talk about that and how you can join in. She also shares how stepping up requires a bold new way of thinking, but it doesn’t have to be so hard. We talk about how she always felt like an only and how these early experiences helped her navigate her future success. We discuss what it was like being the only women speaker at top industry events and she shares a story about how a gift from one woman in the audience changed how she saw everything.  And if you’re ready to step into your leadership and work-she shares the mindset strategies that help keep you focused, the 3 things you need to do before moving to your next level, and the superpower that women have that is underutilized in business.

Ali Brown has shaped many of the 7 and 8 figure businesses of the top online thought leaders you see thriving today. She has been dubbed the "Entrepreneurial Guru for Women" by Business News Daily and has taken her company to the Inc. 500 list rankings. You may have also seen her on ABC’s hit primetime show Secret Millionaire.

19 Oct 202267 The Power of Knowing00:11:24

"It's time to listen to yourself. It's time to take action. And it's time to move forward with whatever you've been wanting to create." - Angela Chee

What action can you take now to create change for yourself, your family, or your community?

Today's podcast was inspired by leaders I met at a Meta Boost Small Business event.  I kicked off the morning meeting with Eric Toda, Meta's Global Head of Social Marketing and Head of Meta Prosper -- a program to support and empower the Asian and Pacific Islander community.

In this episode, I share the inspiring stories and insights of leaders making positive changes in their communities.  Many had similar stories about being the only, and carving their own path vs following a formula.

"It is time to not just talk about what you want to happen, or what you think should happen, or to create scenarios. It's time to listen to yourself and take action." - Angela Chee

In this episode, I talk about how now is the time to move forward with the positive change that you're being called to put out into the world.  Listen in for an inspirational boost.

  • The beauty of having no formula to follow

  • The importance of trust, intuition and action

"I want us to gather together and to know that we are not alone." - Angela Chee

  2. Put your idea out there and see what happens
  3. Keep going!

"Maybe you don't know it all. But know that the call, or whatever it is you're inspired to do, is enough, and to take action." - Angela Chee

30 Dec 202484 Jess Pettitt - How to be a Bridgebuilder & Connect Without Burning Out00:42:41

"There is a real power in recognizing that when you are The Only you are potentially the one who has received the invitation to be in that space." - Jess Pettitt

Jess Pettitt, MEd, MBA, CSP, is a master bridge-builder. Drawing on her broad expertise—including stand-up comedy and keynote speaking—she elevates conversations and challenges audiences to grow. A top facilitator, educator, and speaker in leadership, diversity, and inclusion, Jess holds master’s degrees in Education and Business Administration, with emphases on crisis management and corporate social responsibility. She also understands the power of accepting your weaknesses and areas for growth.

Did she always feel the power of being “The Only”? If so, how can someone cultivate that power?

"What we are prioritizing or how we are defining something might be a nuance that is critical to who that person is, and that is intriguing." - Jess Pettitt

Our world feels more polarized and disconnected than ever, making it hard to truly see and understand each other. Many of us are so exhausted that we’ve stopped connecting and having real conversations. Jess helps us navigate these uncomfortable spaces, sharing her secret to forming better connections—no matter what our differences are.

In today’s show, we explore how to connect while still honoring yourself, how to embrace different styles of power and leadership, and how to discover your own leadership path. We also discuss two simple questions that can transform how you communicate and connect with others. Finally, Jess shares the parable of the long spoons—illustrating what it means to build bridges and why it matters

"I don't think I have answered a question, I think I have just gotten more habitually used to asking." - Jess Pettitt

  • How to overcome the fear of being The Only
  • What does it mean to be a bridge-builder
  • How to define your style of leadership

  2. When you do it, you don't have to do it every day

30 Jun 202020 How To Tap Into Your Power Of The Only To Create Individual and Institutional Change with Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen00:40:54

"We are all prejudice, and I think if we can start with that foundational piece of knowledge - that common ground - then we stand up and speak up from there without being so afraid." - Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen

How is being "the only" an asset that can lead you to new ideas, models and innovation that our world needs?

Today's guest, Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen, has been grappling with this issue since finding her calling in reproductive health at an early age. She knows firsthand that sometimes it is impossible to create real and large scale change by simply working hard. Dr. Cleopatra is a scientist, professor, fertility strategist, and the Executive Director of the Fertility & Pregnancy Institute. After losing her own mother at a young age, she dedicated her life to helping women all over the world and is revolutionizing the field of fertility, reproductive health, and pregnancy.

She is also the first woman of color to be hired on the tenure track at USC in the department where she began as a professor.

“The spoken and unspoken message in academia is that women who have children are not serious about their career.” - Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen

On today's show, Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen and I talk about the secret to harnessing the power of the only despite the odds and how being underestimated can work to your advantage. We also explore the science behind prejudice and discuss why it is important to recognize it in ourselves.

Dr. Cleopatra also discusses her journey to becoming a tenured professor, how she created the family and life of her dreams, and why it is important to create changes at the institutional level.

27 Jul 2021Re-Release: The Power Of Clearing and Vision00:13:51

How do we move forward in a post-pandemic world?

We've been through a lot this past year and half and the world is trying to get back to business and life.    But while on the surface it may seem like not much has changed as people go back to their routines, we all know that navigating our reality is much more complicated.

I wanted to revisit a past episode I recorded in the middle of the pandemic last year because the power of clearing and vision is more important than ever.

How are we going to clear the space so that we can create a new vision?

Many of us are still dealing with stress, fatigue and overwhelm, but before we can move forward we need to accept we are entering a new and different version of the future. What does that look like? First, we need to recognize where we’re at.

“If you’re not taking care of your own energy and your own space, there is no way to own your power and your voice and to put it out there in a bigger way.” – Angela Chee

On today’s show, I talk about the power of clearing, vision, and the way forward. Let’s face it: all of us are just a bit exhausted right now. How do we move forward? What do you want to create? The first step is to honor where you’re at.

I also talk about how to envision your future, ways to honor your grief, and the power of visualization.

“We are creating new patterns and new routines of what we want our lives to look like moving forward.” – Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • The power of visualization
  • How to envision your future
  • How to move forward
  • Ways to honor your grief
  • How to deal with quarantine fatigue and re-entry

15 Jun 202145 The Ripple Effect - Honoring Your Past, Impacting Your Future00:10:37

"It’s important to honor your past and see the impact and power you have on the future. I believe there is a ripple effect." - Angela Chee

How can we be more mindful of how we act and react — and what are we really here to do?

Welcome to a very special episode of The Power of The Only! Today's episode was taped live for the Asian American Podcasters' first ever Podcast Festival and we are going to go a bit deeper into The Power Of The Only Principle #2: Own Your Power. This episode was inspired both by my parents and by my daughter.

Let me explain: As an Asian American woman, I’ve been thinking a lot about my history, my ancestors, my future, and my legacy. And the other day, my wonderful daughter drew a picture of me that was a stark reminder that what we do makes an impact on both the conscious and the subconscious messages we send to ourselves, our families, and the world. It is important to take a step back once in a while to ask ourselves why we do what we do and who gave up their voice so that you could have yours?

"I believe what we do now is not just for you, but for future generations." - Angela Chee

In this episode, I explain how past traumas affect us, how to reconcile your past and your future, and how to step into your power by taking a look back.

"What you do makes an impact on the conscious and the subconscious messages we send to ourselves, our families, and the world." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

02 Nov 202268 The Power of Making the Future - The Makers Conference 2022 Highlights00:14:38

"There is power in our stories; power in sharing them, that’s how it starts." - Angela Chee

How can a spark inside someone else lead to a spark inside you that can light a fire within us all?

This episode is about what we can all do to make the future. Today I share some highlights from the 2022 Makers Conference that I recently attended in Dana Point, California. The event featured powerful speeches and conversations from many iconic trailblazing women, like Gloria Steinem, Jessica Alba, Constance Wu, and more. They reminded me of the importance of breaking down the barriers inside of us to step up more fully into our power of The Only.

"There is no one way to make the future." - Angela Chee

In this episode, I talk about what it means to make the future and what that can look like for each of us. I also share the important reminder that you have an impact and it’s up to you to decide for yourself what that looks like and what action you can take to get there.

22 Mar 202139 #StopAsianHate — Sharing Stories, Speaking Up and Taking A Stand!00:09:10

"Representation matters, breaking down stereotypes matters, how you report the news matters, speaking up matters, and standing against hate matters!" - Angela Chee

How can we use our power of The Only to combat racism and hatred?

Anti-Asian incidents are on the rise. In the last year alone, the United States reported about 3,800 anti-Asian hate incidents, with 2.3 times more incidents involving Asian women. Now we are grappling with the shootings in Atlanta this past week which left eight people dead — six of whom were Asian women.

As an Asian American woman, these events deeply sadden me. I believe it is paramount at times like this to continue to share our stories, speak up, and take a stand for the things we believe in.

"We can turn our pain and fear into power." - Angela Chee

In today's episode, I share a very personal story that I’ve only opened up about once before, I discuss ways to stay empowered if you have experienced hate, how to help if you witness it, how all of us can continue to stand against hate and why it matters for you and your personal journey.

I also talk about the Asian American experience in the United States and why it is so important to keep telling our stories.

“Experiencing racism is not new to me.” - Angela Chee

We can’t think of companies as being separate." - Ginny Clarke

Our world is evolving. How are we going to move forward? Who do we need be to usher in this shift in our personal lives and in our work?

Today we are exploring Fifth Dimensional Leadership with Google Executive Ginny Clarke. We discuss her personal evolution of stepping into her “Only,” when she first discovered she was an empath, and how we can all bring more empathy to our work and the world.

Join us for this deep and insightful conversation as we explore her vision for leadership and the future that is more soul-based, less-ego-based, where we focus on unity and instead of separation and where we tap into our intuition instead of relying only on logic.

As we become more diverse and more divided, how can we move forward and thrive together?

23 Feb 202137 The Power Of Positivity and Tenacity with “Chopped” TV Show Creator Dave Noll00:53:25

“Even after I had shows on VH1 or Nickelodeon or Comedy Central it was still like, I'm a kid from Jersey. I'm a dad who lives in the suburbs. I'm never going to have a Fox show, but you have to believe the impossible is possible.” - Dave Noll

How do we continue to grow and move forward in 2021 with positivity and tenacity?

These are characteristics that I work on cultivating every day. Things aren’t easy right now, so we need to consciously create what we want in our lives.  And, as we all know as “Onlys,” creating what’s next takes time and energy. That's why I'm so excited to have Dave Noll on today's episode. An expert at embodying positivity, tenacity, and creativity, Dave has created more than 50 television series including the Chopped franchise, the game shows America Says, Punchline, Insanity, and Face The Truth, and the new podcast game Factorious. Dave and his partner Cleve Keller joined together exclusively in 2007. With 3,300 episodes under their belts, they have become one of the most successful format development teams in the world.

Dave believes that in order to have these hits, you have to pitch a lot and not be afraid of rejection. Last year alone, he and his partner created 70 plus shows, pitched in over 100 meetings, wrote more than 40 show decks, and loved every minute of it. So how does he keep going and do it with joy?

"So much of television is pitching that one thing and working really hard at it, but leaving all the doors open." - Dave Noll

In this episode, Dave shares his “Only” story about his early years at MTV and what he calls his "Power Of The Only Love Story". We discover what Brandon Tartikoff, the former president of NBC, said to him that shaped his outlook and what Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler, and I have in common.

Listen as Dave Noll shares the secret to his success, how he maintains a positive attitude, and how to stand out when pitching or creating anything.

"Think of yourself as the product; what is the one thing that makes you unique?" - Dave Noll

30 Aug 202265 The Power of Joy and Pain00:13:37

"Sunshine comes after the rain, right? But what if the key to our peace, success and true fulfillment isn't waiting for the pain to pass (the rain) to feel joy (sunshine), but our ability to navigate both -- and at the same time?" - Angela Chee

How do we feel it all when we are feeling so much?

I have been thinking a lot about the power of joy and pain, so today, I talk about ways to manage all of the emotions you have been juggling since the start of the pandemic.  The world is moving forward, so how do we continue to move forward and thrive?  I talk about the ability of all of us to feel both joy and pain simultaneously and the benefits of allowing our pain to be expressed and fully experienced.  I also talk about where we store our pain and how we can validate that pain along our journey towards healing.

"I know I’m not alone. My friends, my clients, we’re all just holding it together, fluctuating between life’s joyous milestones and, at times, tragic pain and everywhere in between -- and to cope some of us may just stay somewhere in the middle because we don’t know how to feel." - Angela Chee

In today's show, we talk about how to cultivate and celebrate your joy and why it is important that you fully feel your pain in order to release it.

"That is the next level of my Power of The Only evolution: to feel it all to heal it all and to move on." - Angela Chee

Who are you, what do you stand for, what do you want to say, and how are you going to show up?

Things are cracking open, structures and systems are shifting, and yes it is bringing up a lot of anger, division, uncertainty, and sadness, but I want that anger to fuel us. This is the perfect time to acknowledge what’s not working in our businesses, in our personal lives, and in our society as a whole -- and even though it feels like a dark time, we need to recognize the beauty and hope in the world so we can show up the way we need to.

19 Feb 202000 Trailer00:03:38

All this talk about women’s empowerment, but is it really making a difference?

The latest Women in the Workforce report by Lean In and McKinsey and Company says, “No!” It’s not making a meaningful impact, at least not in corporate.

But what about the rest of society?

With the #metoo movement, a record number of women serving in the House, and a historic number of women running for President, more voices are out there.  But, are people really listening?

Drowning In Women's Voices?

Why do we feel like we’re drowning in women’s voices, yet we still feel uncertain if anyone is really hearing us or if it will make a difference?

A shift is happening, we can feel it.  But at times it may also feel like we are going backward.

So what’s the problem?  Women are working harder, they’ve been leaning in, so why not the progress we expected?

Yes, we need organizations to shift, we need men in the conversation, we need a culture transformation for real change to happen,  But what about in the meantime?

The report also says too few women leads to too many “Onlys”, women who are the only or one of the only women in the room.   It says being an only is challenging, their power and voice gets drowned out and they have a significantly worse experience.

There Is Power In Being "The Only"

While I agree it may be more difficult, I believe there is power in being the only.

My whole life I have been the only, the only Chinese girl in my neighborhood growing up, the only Chinese girl in school, the only Asian TV reporter at a station, the only Asian speaker at conferences……

Knowing I’m the only gives me power.  But at the same time I don’t focus on it.  The truth is many times I don’t notice. I’m at the table because I deserve to be there and so do you.  Once I’m there that’s when the power of the only shows up.   Power to have diversity of thought, power to plant the seed, power to be a translator for others who don’t have a voice, power to bring other “Onlys” into the conversation, until one day, there will be no more talk about being the only.

But how do you turn being “The Only” from a weakness into a strength?  What can we learn from the onlys that will help you achieve your goals, thrive and create real change?  While many consider “onlys” women.  I believe many of us can relate to being the only regardless of gender.   What are the lessons learned from those breaking barriers, defying the odds and making positive change? That's what I'm exploring.

For now here are my 5 principles of The Power Of The Only.

  1. Own your power-Know who you are, what you stand for and know you belong there. You have everything you need inside you.
  2. Own your voice-You need to speak up, stand up and share your opinions with certainty, without need for validation.
  3. See being “The Only” as a privilege, not a burden.-No, you don’t stand for everyone and yes, it’s not your sole responsibility.  But right now you have the opportunity, the opportunity to share, to educate, to enlighten, and open up the window for understanding and take a seat at the table.  It’s a privilege. Do not waste your gift.
  4. Communicate in a way others can hear you.  Know your audience, know what you want, listen with an open heart and integrate. Once they can see you and trust you, then they can really hear you.
  5. Come from a place of abundance, not scarcity.  Yes, you are “the only” right now and the way to grow and succeed is not to maintain your status/power by keeping other only’s out.  But to plant seeds, bring others in, and carve a new path for others to follow.

It’s time to step up into the gift you were given. Are you ready for the challenge and to take on the power of the only?

You are not alone. It’s time to come together.

Have you ever experienced the feeling of being the only?

20 Oct 202028 Can Your Greatest Strength Also Be Your Obstacle?00:06:02

What happens when your strengths also become your greatest obstacles?

October is a busy month for events for me.  Most companies have adjusted to the virtual world and are really embracing the technology.

One of the themes I often talk about as I give virtual keynote speeches is how to break through barriers -- not just the external ones, but your internal ones.

You can Subscribe and Listen to the Podcast on Apple Podcasts. And be sure to leave me a Rating and Review!

"I believe in order to break through your internal barriers, first we need to be aware of what they are -- making the unconscious conscious." - Angela Chee

I believe that in order to break through these internal barriers, we must first be aware of what they are. We also need to understand where our internal barriers come from, like our culture, societal stereotypes, media messages, our upbringing, and more. Then we need to redefine these barriers so they are no longer an obstacle, but rather, a strength. That is what the power of "The Only" is all about.  But what if what helps you succeed is also what can hold you back if we take it too far?

On today's show, I talk about the power of being an Only, immigrant culture, how to learn valuable lessons from the past without taking on the burden of our ancestors, and how to turn obstacles in your life into strengths.

"Being an Only is not always an obstacle. It can be your greatest strength." - Angela Chee

28 Jul 202022 Tony Chatman - How To Be Trailblazer Not A Token01:00:14

"It's not that we don't recognize that it's not always fair, it's that we've determined that we're not going to let anyone else dictate our future." - Tony Chatman

What can we, as "Onlys", do to ensure that we are seen as trailblazers rather than tokens?

We can't control how others view us. We do, however, have control over how we view ourselves, how we show up, and how we own our voice and power. That is why I started this podcast. I believe there is power in being the only -- and so does Tony Chatman. Tony is keynote speaker, corporate relationship expert and speaker who has worked with organizations and government agencies from the US Secret Service and Chase Bank to NASA. As only the second African American to ever graduate from his university with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he shares his journey from engineering to non-profit and public speaking to stepping into his "Only".

“As The Only, you start to realize: here's who I am, here's who I'm made to be, and here's the gift that I can contribute to the world." - Tony Chatman

On today's show, we discuss why it’s not always about fitting in or getting access, but rather, it’s about creating your own opportunities and knowing you belong there. We explore why it’s important to take a seat at the table and how to know if taking that seat will actually create positive change.

We talk about codeswitching and how it can be an asset, why it’s time to be uncomfortable, and why these uncomfortable conversations must start with us.

"There was a day my wife and I looked at each other and were like, 'there is no cavalry.' It's just us." - Tony Chatman

Show Notes:

"At every social event I was totally isolated from other black people and it was just the world that I was in." - Tony Chatman

3 Pieces of Advice or Action Steps:

  1. Figure out your voice
  2. Surround yourself with people who are likeminded
  3. Influence everyone else

"There's not a lot of chairs and the table for The Only, and so we have to take that chair when we can, and once we're in that chair you can't just get my face you get my voice." Tony Chatman

26 Jan 202135 The Power Of Words and Healing00:07:03

"There is always light
If we’re brave enough to see it;
There is always light
If we’re brave enough to be it." - Amanda Gorman

So what's next?

Last week was the presidential inauguration here in the United States and there were so many power of "The Only" moments.

Kamala Harris became the first woman — and person of Black and South Asian descent — to be sworn in as Vice President by the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor.  Jennifer Lopez called for unity in Spanish after singing This Land Is Your Land. But it was the words of Amanda Gorman, the country's first National Youth Poet Laureate, that left many speechless. Her words were healing for our souls.

These are the moments that move us; when we see and hear someone who owns their power and owns their voice when we feel the power of words creating a collective magical moment. This is Power, Presence, and Representation. This is being YOU, Amplified!®

This is why I do what I do: to awaken your power of the Only.

"We need to continue to do the work, but we need to do it differently." - Angela Chee

On today's show, I talk about the power of this moment in time, the power of the Only principles, and why we need more bridge-builders.

We talk about how we can begin to move forward and how you can put your principles into action.

"I see a vision of the future that is empathetic, diverse, open, and united." - Angela Chee

How are you? Have you been feeling a little bit overwhelmed or scattered lately?

There are a lot of things going on in our world right now and it can be really intense. So I want to dedicate this episode to...nothing. What do I mean by that? Well, I want to talk about the power of emptying your cup.

Events are ramping back up again and I have a handful of (remote) keynote speeches to give next month. I am always adjusting my tone and my messaging to reflect what is going on for the specific group that I am talking to at the time and at this time of great transformation and change I wanted the share the story of "Emptying Your Cup."

Before you can move forward you need to be empty... And remember that it is an evolution - an ongoing process.

"The question is: how do we get back to that place of being okay?" - Angela Chee

On today's show, I tell you the story and talk about harnessing the power of emptying your cup  I also talk about what you can fill your cup back up with and how to identify others' struggles.

17 Nov 202030 Trusting The Power Of You00:07:07

"True leaders bring out the best of you. It’s not about the best of them." - Angela Chee

How do we know if we are stuck in a false narrative?

The recent election has highlighted the ongoing division in the United States. We need to understand how we got here, what motivates people, and why we keep repeating the same patterns. Even more importantly, how do we move forward with a vision for ourselves and the world that is hopeful and kind?

Our society is evolving, but that change starts with our individual evolutions. This episode is a reminder to trust in your own power again. The internet is drowning us in information, but it is  time to quiet the noise. Now, more than ever, we must be careful to not get sucked into false narratives, groupthink, and echo chambers.

“You already have everything you already need inside to shine; you just need to discover it and amplify it.” - Angela Chee

On today's show, I talk about the power that social media has to mislead us and how to avoid common traps -- both internal and external. I discuss the moral and ethical consequences of groupthink, how to avoid echo chambers, and how to begin to trust in the power of you again.

"We need to stop placing everything on others, and be careful to not get sucked into false narratives, group think and echo chambers." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • Why groupthink is harmful
  • How to avoid echo chambers

"Why do we downplay things so much instead of making them bigger and marking those wins in our life?" - Angela Chee

What can I pause right now and savor?

Today I want to talk about celebration and the science behind its value. If you don't feel like you're in the mood to celebrate, don't worry. You are not alone. This year has been a doozy. And sometimes we forget how far we have come because we are too focused on what's around the next corner. How are you going to rewire your brain for celebration? What are you proud of?

"Our brains are wired to remember the negative." - Angela Chee

In today's show, we talk about rewiring your brain through celebration, how to rediscover what is meaningful to you, and why it's so important to celebrate the little things.

07 Apr 202009 Psychologist Dr. Valerie Rein - Taking Care of Your Mental Health During Crisis: The Power Of Shifting From Surviving To Thriving and The Key To Women's Happiness and Fulfillment00:48:11

Stuck at home, but busier than ever?  With the zoom meetings, homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, making sure everyone is healthy and safe, managing your business, making sure you don’t run out of groceries or toilet paper.  It’s a lot?

How are we handling it all?  Are you handling it all?     It’s Ok if the answer is No.  All of us are adjusting to this new world we live in there is no right way….just the way that works for you and your family.  But while we know that in our heads, living it is a different story.

I’ve been in action mode-how can I serve? How can I prepare?  I’ve been busy serving my clients, recording relevant podcast episodes, updating my equipment for video keynotes, taking care of my kids, making sure my parents are safe and making sure I deliver as a leader.  It’s a lot.

You probably have your own list……so today is a reminder to not get sucked into to this hamster wheel of productivity and stress.

Give yourself grace and I will do the same.

I recorded this episode with Dr. Valerie Rein last month before the world shifted, but her message is more relevant than ever and she shares simple tools that will help you through this time and in the future.

"Our pain oftentimes opens gates to our mission in life." - Dr. Valerie Rein

Why is it that many women feel stuck on the hamster wheel of achievement or to-dos’ or we may look like we have it all together on the outside, yet feel burnt out or unfulfilled on the inside?

My guest today, Dr. Valerie Rein wants to shift the conversation from 'how much can I bear?' to 'how good can it get?'

A psychologist, women’s mental health expert and business consultant, Dr. Valerie created “the only” science-backed system for helping women achieve their ultimate success, happiness, and fulfillment.  Dr. Valerie's latest book is called Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women’s Happiness and Fulfillment. She holds a Masters of Education in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University and a PhD from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

"We're so conditioned to think that there's something wrong with us. Again, that is a very patriarchal conditioning.” - Dr. Valerie Rein

In this episode, we talk about how you can start thriving instead of surviving, why you may be feeling dissatisfied in spite of your achievements, and why it’s not your fault.

Dr. Valerie also shares about her journey as a young child growing up in Russia to moving to the US in her 20’s striving to check off all the boxes of success until a pivotal moment in the ER led to this groundbreaking work to help women truly thrive. She talks about how she almost didn’t write the book and shares tools to help you navigate when you’re stepping into your next level work. She also gives you resources and tools to help you heal and discusses how this work also impacts men, our communities and organizations.

"It takes stillness and desire to find that true calling." - Dr. Valerie Rein

Show Notes:

  • What are causes of stress for women
  • The REAL STRUGGLE for high achieving women
  • What is Patriarchy stress disorder

  • What is the first step to healing
  • How your body remembers trauma

  • What is success?
  • The BUSY-NESS addiction
  • How to find your true calling

  1. Whatever you think is wrong with you. It is not you and there is nothing wrong with you. There are other factors at play.
  2. Recognize your preciousness and connect with others who people who can recognize your preciousness.

"Whatever you are working on, plant the seeds." - Angela Chee

How can the power of vision help us discover and amplify our gifts?

I recently returned from my first visit to the National Speakers Association Conference, so today I want to share the takeaways of my trip and highlight the power of vision that exists within each of us. While I have enjoyed my time working remotely during the last few years, there are also perks to working in person that I realized I have been missing. It was a joy to connect with others in my industry and to reminisce on the moment in my childhood when the first seeds were planted in my mind to become a member of the NSA.

"Envision what is possible and know that you already have everything that you need." - Angela Chee

In today's show, we talk about why "planting seeds" matters and how the power of vision helped me to uncover my passion.

17 Mar 202006 SPECIAL EPISODE: Coronavirus and Working From Home - The Power Of Being Prepared, How To Stay Connected and Get Set-up For Virtual Meetings and Speaking00:24:53

"It is important to be prepared and stay connected." - Angela Chee

How do you stay connected and keep moving your work-life forward during this time of social distancing?

A lot has shifted in a week….we just launched the show last week and we have some amazing episodes coming up, but it not business as usual. So I recorded a special work from home episode instead.

On Wednesday, The World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus a pandemic.  Events and conferences cancelled, companies ordering employees to work from home. On Friday my kids schools closed in San Diego, counties in San Francisco ordering shelter in place on Monday.  It went from many clients and fellow speakers feeling a bit uncertain a few weeks ago to a very urgent matter.   I'm taking this very seriously and staying home with my family.

It's important for all of us to do our part to stop the spread, yet still  stay calm, productive and healthy.  It’s important as we work from home and do more social distancing that we don’t isolate emotionally. Remember to stay connected, check on your family and friends.  I'm practicing compassion and also sending my thoughts to those who may not have the privilege to work from home.

While I have done my research on the coronavirus, I’m am not an expert, but I did want to share some of my resources on how I keep update and stay informed to keep my family safe. But where I can be in expert in how to stay connected on-camera and off.  How do you set up your home for virtual meetings? What equipment and software do you need? How do you run a virtual meeting effectively? How do you still stay connected if you’re working from home?

Here are some of my tips from a recent Facebook live that I did. I hope they serve you in this uncertain time.

"If you really want to connect with your audience, you want to make sure that you look at the camera lens and not at yourself." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • How to approach the coronavirus
  • How to reduce stress
  • The best ways to work from home
  • How to stay connecting while working from home
  • How to set up your space
  • Why tell people what to expect
  • The best ways lead a virtual business meeting
  • How to lead a team virtually
  • The importance of performance
  • How to touch up your appearance or change your backdrop in Zoom
  • What technology to use while working from home
  • How to be productive while working from home

07 Jun 2022Re-Release: THE RIPPLE EFFECT – HONORING YOUR PAST, IMPACTING YOUR FUTURE00:10:37

“It’s important to honor your past and see the impact and power you have on the future. I believe there is a ripple effect.” – Angela Chee

I’ve been very introspective these past few months.  I feel a lot of change coming and have been going through a personal realignment, by reflecting back to move forward. That’s why this week I’m re-releasing: “The Ripple Effect-Honoring your past, impacting your future.”

“I believe what we do now is not just for you, but for future generations.” – Angela Chee

It was a milestone week as both my kids graduated one from 6th grade and the other from 8th.  Grateful to have my parents here celebrating with us, especially after a health scare with my father earlier this year.  3 generations together. So many lessons if we stop to listen.

In this episode, I explain how to step into your power by taking a look back and how to reconcile your past to empower your future.

As we move into summer, I hope you will take some time to reflect and go through your own personal realignment.

“Whatever part of the journey you’re on, it’s important to take a look at what we’ve been through so we know where we’re going.” – Angela Chee

04 May 202142 Moving From Scarcity To Abundance00:06:21

“The way Onlys grow and succeed is not by maintaining the status quo, but to plant seeds, bring others in, and carve a new path for others to follow.” – Angela Chee

What does moving from scarcity to abundance really mean? And how do we do it?

As we start the shift back to our everyday lives, I want to share some tips and tools to help you to step back into your power, but to do so with more abundance and joy. I know from personal experience that it is all too easy to say we want to come from a place of abundance when in reality, many of us naturally revert to a scarcity mindset. At work, many of us are driven by this culture of scarcity which manifests in this feeling that there is only enough room for one, but it’s time for a new model — in work and in life.

“It’s important to remember that the world needs you, but it starts with taking care of you.” – Angela Chee

In today’s show, I explain how to live in abundance, what an abundant mindset looks like, and what you can do to avoid a scarcity mindset.

“There’s always this feeling of there’s only enough room for one.” – Angela Chee

Show Notes:

“When do we feel like we have done enough, accomplished enough, and are enough to just be?” – Angela Chee

Advice for Moving Into Abundance:

  1. Have awareness of your barriers
  2. Focus on what you have
  3. Celebrate your wins, big and small
  4. Train your brain

“Pausing to celebrate these moments in our lives allows us to feel joy and gratitude and it forces our brain to see the abundance in our lives.” – Angela Chee

10 Mar 202005 Behind The Scenes Of Tony Robbins 60th Birthday Celebration - The Power Of Sharing Your Story, Community and Giving Back00:15:19

"Would you ever think standing up and sharing your story could lead to raising 18 Million Dollars and save 15,000 children? That is the Power Of The Only in action."

Today I’m going take you behind the scenes with Tony Robbins.  Last week my husband and I had the privilege of being a part of the host committee for Tony Robbins 60th Birthday celebration and benefit concert for Operation Underground Railroad - an organization that rescues children from sex trafficking.

Some of you may a be a big fan of Tony’s work, read his books or been to his transformational events or just know him as the self-help infomercial guy in the 80's and 90’s, coach to the stars and 4 US Presidents, or the person that got Oprah Winfrey to walk on fire.

He’s all of these things and more. He’s an entrepreneur, #1 NY Times best selling author, philanthropist and the nations #1 life and business strategist. For more than 40 years he’s impacted more than 50 million people across the world… helping others create success and fulfillment.

Last weekend we celebrated his life and legacy at the Microsoft Theatre in the heart of LA Live. While I’m going to share behind the scenes of this red carpet-celebrity filled celebration and benefit concert, more importantly I’m going to share the story of how the ripple effect of one single act can really create positive change.

I’ll share the true secret to living a full life, why sharing your story matters, how to open up to receiving, how to build community and influence, and I’ll share what one celebrity host did that instantly created a deeper connection with the audience and how you can apply it to your communication. I’ll also share the lessons and stories from that evening  that can help you in your business and life.

The event was a benefit for Operation Underground Railroad led by former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard. Together with his team of former CIA, FBI and law enforcement they rescue victims, help capture and prosecute the offenders, they also give local law enforcement the tools and strategies to dismantle the human trafficking networks. They also focus on the aftercare to reintegrate or rehabilitate the children.

It’s a dark issue that many don’t want to see, but they are taking it head on and making a difference. There is more slavery today than anytime in human history and many of those trafficked are children-globally and here in the US. Since 2013 they’ve rescued more than 10,000 victims but now they can continue to save more lives.

"In one night more than $18 Million was raised! That’s saving the lives of 15,000 children Wow. I was in awe." - Angela Chee

This all started just a few years ago when one woman stood up at a Tony Robbins’ Business Mastery event and shared her story. Tony believes life is not just about business, it’s about contribution and the secret to living is giving. They shared stories about causes they were passionate about, she said she wanted to help rescue girls and talked about the work of Operation Underground Railroad. This led to Tony learning about the organization and donating on the spot and it created a ripple effect where others started to donate and led to $500,000 being raised that day. Since then Tony has been passionate about the organizations’ work and vowed to save more lives.

"On his 60th birthday - his friends, family and hundreds of those he impacted filled the Microsoft Theatre to celebrate and fufill this mission." - Angela Chee

From the evening’s host Dr. Oz and Maria Menunous and a dance performance from Derek Hough (Huff) accompanied by Lindsey Sterling on Violin, performances by Melissa Etheridge, Leona Lewis, Andy Grammer, Pitbull and Actor Gerard Butler doing his best Tony impersonation with his signature baseball cap, black shirt and shorts. It was a beautiful moving evening.

You can find videos of the performances and stories on Instagram under highlights-events.

18 million dollars means 15,000 lives saved.

If you would like to find out more go to www.ourrescue.org.

There’s also a major Hollywood film about Operation Underground Railroad and the life of Tim Ballard coming soon starring Jim Caveziel called Freedom. I saw the trailer, it’s really powerful!

The reason I’m sharing this story is because I want you to know if you don’t think you make a difference, you do.

"What you believe in matters, what you share matters and what you stand up for matters." - Angela Chee

Remember this: One woman sharing her passion at an event led to Tony’s support and bringing more awareness, and the power of his community and influence because of his impact through the years will now save more lives and bring even more awareness.

That is The Power Of The Only and Power, Presence and Representation in action.  You have no idea of the ripple effect of one single act. When you step up it can change everything. What are some of the other lessons from that evening?

Being at LA Live brought back memories….I can’t believe I covered the ground breaking ceremony back in 2005 when I was an LA reporter and this whole complex was just an idea. I remember sitting in the news van in front of the Staples Center looking at graphic of the development plans - they wanted it look like Tokyo…. with all the video screens…. A reminder that all things start with a vision.

I was also inspired by so many moments that evening about the power of stories. The ones you tell others and the ones you tell yourself and their impact on your life and your success.

From seeing blind and autistic singer Kodi Lee - winner of America’s got talent play the piano and sing with such beauty and grace.

To Melissa Etheridge sharing her story of how Tony impacted her life…. and what she learned. She said when you’re reaching for your dreams you always think once you reach your goal then you will be fulfilled. You spend your life chasing this thing….whatever it is for you…… but then wonder why it’s not enough - because fufillment doesn’t always come with success or having it all. It comes from within you and stories you tell yourself.

To listening to leaders like Peter Guber - Chairman of Mandalay Entertainment and owner of several sports teams from Golden State Warriors to LA Dodgers, and Paul Tudor Jones hedge fund manager and philanthropist talk about the power of mindset, and their transformations through the years. And Marc Benioff founder of sales force talking about giving and tackling the issue of homelessness in San Francisco.

Singer Andy Grammer shared his joy and gratitude remembering his journey from starting as a street performer in Santa Monica to now. There’s also lessons in receiving. Tony who is usually on stage for hours at a time leading the transformation was just sitting in the audience and listening. There was also another example of receiving……. His wife Sage who organized the event shared stories from last year when Tony had some health scares but continued to serve at his events and during that difficult time he also learned how to receive from his team and his audience.

For those of you who are leaders and are usually giving and sharing it isn’t always easy to stop and receive, but that can be powerful as well.

And while The Power Of The Only is about inspiration and lessons from leaders it’s also about how you can use your voice, power and presence to help you be a better communicator and leader.

I also wanted to share a specific behind the scenes moment that will give you an inside look at what it was like hosting a show and what you can learn from Maria Menunos that may help your speaking and how you connect with an audience.  Tune into the podcast to learn how she turned her life's biggest challenge to a gift and what you can learn from her sharing her story.

The power of sharing your story not only creates connection and helps you command your audience, but you never know who you may impact or what ripple effect you may create like it did for Operation Underground Railroad.

"Remember there is power in sharing your story, community and giving back." - Angela Chee

11 Aug 2021Re-Release: Tools To Harness The Power Of Mindset, Gratitude and Appreciation00:19:40

“That is leadership in challenging times…..balancing realism with optimism.” – Angela Chee

How can we harness the power of gratitude and appreciation right now?

As we wrap up the summer, for many of us there's a bit of uncertainty again.  To help you stay focused and back on track I'm re-releasing this episode I recorded in the middle of the pandemic where I share 3 powerful tools to help shift your mindset.

Harnessing gratitude does not mean being unrealistic or in denial.

Each of us faces different challenges right now, the key is being able to embrace both feelings of gratitude and hardship in opposition.

How do we find that balance?

How do we pivot, innovate and stay strong and centered?

“Gratitude doesn’t mean not being aware or empathetic to what’s going on in the world.” – Angela Chee

In this episode, I get bit personal and share the lessons I’ve learned in the past few weeks from myself, from my clients, some of the things I’m seeing in the coaching and speaking space, and what I’m doing in my business to serve and pivot during this time.

But if you’re not in action mode and you’re feeling a bit stuck. That’s ok too.

3 Simple Tools To Help You Harness The Power Of Gratitude

Studies show gratitude helps you reduce stress, increase happiness and stay healthier and has shown to have lasting effects on the brain.

I also share some resources and mindset shifts to help you navigate this time. I’ll share the morning process I go through for myself and my kids that helps keep us centered and have some tools inspired by Tony Robbins and Jack Canfield-Author of Chicken Soup For The Soul.

“The most important thing that we can do right now is to protect your mental state and your focus.” – Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • The top mindset shift you need in challenging times and how to make it
  • How to make it through an uncertainty
  • How to lead in challenging times
  • What to do to make this time work for you
  • Tips to embracing gratitude during this time
  • How to release emotions
  • The importance of celebration
  • What is priming and how to add it to your morning ritual?
  • My morning gratitude ritual and how to apply it
  • What are you grateful for?

18 May 202143 How to Use Your Power of The Only to Create Change and Impact with New York Times Bestselling Author Charlene Li00:51:00

"It’s one thing to accumulate that power, but when will you also use it? That is a very strategic question because it is a very limited supply — especially as an Only.” - Charlene Li

How do we grapple with wanting to fit in while knowing we stand out?

This week's guest is New York Times bestselling author, Charlene Li. Her purpose is to help leaders harness their power of The Only to thrive through disruption. I really admire her growth mindset and recognize it in myself, but we often don't start out this way. Charlene says that as Onlys, we have the power to see beyond what others see partly because we have broken through the barriers that come with being an Only. She argues that, in order to step into our power, we need to be asking ourselves: what tools do I have?  What can I do with that power? When should we store it up and when should we unleash it?

"By standing out, I was gaining power." - Charlene Li

In today's show, we talk about how to handle Imposter Syndrome, why are allies so important, and how to deal with microaggressions.

"Because I was The Only, I had to be a bridge." - Charlene Li

15 Dec 202032 The Mask of Success00:14:49

"The journey to fulfillment is often different than the journey to achievement." - Angela Chee

How are we going to sustain wrapping up the end of the year and moving forward into the new year with a vision?

As the tumultuous year of 2020 comes to a close, the big topic on my mind is mental health. Mental health for my clients, for my community, and for the world. And it got me thinking about the "Mask of Success".

What happens when leaders aren't okay? In a world where it is becoming commonplace to measure your sense of fulfillment on your professional successes, it can be all too easy to don a mask of success. This, however, is a dangerous path.

I hope this episode encourages you to give yourself grace.

“It's maybe okay to sometimes not be okay.” - Angela Chee

On today's show, we talk about the mask of success and what happens when the strong, the visionary, the Only hide behind it.

I discuss how to honor your mental health, and why it's important to reflect on how we grew up and how it shapes how we move forward.  I reflect on tragic death of Tony Hsieh -former Zappo's CEO and deliverer of happiness and share some very personal stories, resources, and insights on mental health.

"Even subconsciously I might have equated success and achievement with love." - Angela Chee

Show Notes:

  • How to protect your mental health
  • What the mask of success looks like
  • How to encourage discussions on mental health
  • What to do when leaders are not okay
  • Why it's important to reflect on how we grew up

08 Mar 202001 Welcome to The Power Of "The Only"00:16:05

"Are you ready to step up, speak up and make an impact, but not sure exactly how?  It’s time to step into the gift you have been given and harness the Power of The Only." - Angela Chee

Welcome to the first episode of The Power Of The Only.

I'm celebrating International Women’s Day, a global day to celebrate the achievements of women with the launch of my podcast. But this show is not just for or about women.

I believe all of us can relate to being the only and learn from “The Onlys”- those breaking through barriers, defying the odds and creating positive change.

I’ve put a lot of time, thought, energy and love into this podcast and I hope that it serves you.

What is the power of the only? What called me to start this movement?

In episode #1 I will share the story behind the podcast, a little more about me, what you can expect and learn from the show and I will also share my “5 Power Of The Only” Principles and more about how you can apply them to your business and life.

These principles have helped me harness the Power of The Only and each week we will continue to explore this conversation.

It all started last year when  I was preparing for a new keynote. I was reviewing the latest Women In The Workforce reports by Lean In and McKinsey and it said while there has been some progress in representation of women in senior leadership, women still continue to be underrepresented at almost every level and women of color are the most underrepresented group of all.

But what it also said is that too few women leads to too many “Onlys”, women who are the only or one of the only women in the room. It says being an only is not only challenging, but their power and voice gets drowned out and they have a significantly worse experience.

While I agree it sometimes may be more difficult, I believe there is power in being the only and we have so much to learn from the onlys that have navigated their way to success.

I believe the challenges that onlys go through is the power-it gives you a deeper understanding, a different perspective and strength that all leaders can benefit from.

I’ve always been an only. The only Chinese girl in my neighborhood growing up, the only Asian TV reporter at a station, the only woman speaker at a conference. Being an only was not a weakness it was my strength. Yes, we still need organizations to shift, we need a culture transformation for real change to happen, But what about in the meantime? Not just in corporate, but in the rest of society?

Knowing I’m the only gives me power. But at the same time I don’t focus on it. The truth is many times I don’t notice. I’m at the table because I deserve to be there and so do you. Once I’m there that’s when the power of the only shows up.  Power to have diversity of thought, power to plant the seed, power to be a translator for others who don’t have a voice, power to bring other “Onlys” into the conversation, until one day, there will be no more talk about being the only.

But how do you turn being “The Only” from a weakness into a strength? And what can all of us learn from the onlys that will help you thrive in your business and life? That is what we are going to explore….. So while the term only started as women “onlys.” I believe many of us can relate to being the only.

Have you ever felt like the only one? The only person in your company, industry, community or the only one in the room reaching for your unique dreams and vision? There is a lot happening in our world. A shift is happening, we can feel it. But at times it may also feel like we are going backward. It’s time for new conversations - new voices and a bolder way of thinking. Call it innovation, disruption, diversity!

It’s what our world needs, it’s what our businesses need and it’s what you need to step into your leadership.

"That is what the power of the only is all about!" - Angela Chee

I want to share my 5 principals of The Power the only that have helped me achieve my goals and thrive. Throughout the podcast we will continue to explore these principals as we interview trailblazing entrepreneurs, C-suite leaders, filmmakers, diversity experts, coaches, speakers, publishers maybe even a few celebrities.

Are they the same? Are they different? We will ask these questions and more as we dive deeper into The Power Of The Only.

"OWN YOUR POWER." - Angela Chee

For now here are my 5 Principles of The Power Of The Only:

  1. Own your power
  2. Own your voice
  3. See being the only as a privilege not a burden
  4. Communicate in a way others can hear you
  5. Come from a place of abundance not scarcity

What does this all mean and how can it impact your life?  Tune into the podcast to find out more.

If you would like a free copy of these Power Of The Only principles and a Clarity and Vision worksheet to help apply them in your business and life click here to get access.

In upcoming episodes I’ll also share my advice and resources from my 20 plus years in the broadcasting, entertainment and speaking industries and answer any questions you may have. I may even coach a few of you during the show. Let me topics would you like to hear more about. Or Any Only’s you would like me to feature? I’d love to hear from you.

Remember you are not alone. It’s time to come together.

09 Jun 202018 The Power Of Clearing and Vision00:13:51

"Many of my clients have been in either fight, flight, or freeze -- and wherever you are at, that is okay." - Angela Chee

How are we going to clear the space so that we can create a new vision?

Today I really want to focus on vision.  Many of us are dealing with stress, overwhelm from world events, quarantine fatigue and more.  I am not going to use the word normal as we begin to define what life looks like now that we're getting back to business, but we do need to accept that we are entering a new and different version of the future. What does that look like? First, we need to recognize where we're at.

"If you're not taking care of your own energy and your own space, there is no way to own your power and your voice and to put it out there in a bigger way." - Angela Chee

On today's show, I talk about the power of clearing, vision, and the way forward. Let's face it: all of us are just a bit exhausted right now. How do we move forward? What do you want to create? The first step is to honor where you're at.

I also talk about how to envision your future, ways to honor your grief, and the power of visualization.

“We are creating new patterns and new routines of what we want our lives to look like moving forward." - Angela Chee

  • How to envision your future
