13 Dec 2021The Sleepover Club: The Yassification Of The Internet 00:21:45

Over the past few weeks, the internet has been overrun with yassified edits of our faves. Perhaps you've seen Toni Collette with smoothed out skin, Fiona from Shrek sporting a gorgeous smokey eye, or the 'oi mista, you me dad?' doll looking like she's about to head out for a night at Vodka Revs. But while we all become obsessed with yassifying our faves, Ione and Halima are going deep on what the meme really means, and how beauty standards have changed throughout the course of the internet.

Most of us feel like beauty standards are being broken down, if not obliterated altogether. But from Instagram face, to FaceTune Pro, we're still trapped searching for the best version of ourselves and buying into whichever editing app can get us there the quickest. Is the Yassification meme the only thing that can save us from airbrushed hell?

10 Jan 2022The Sleepover Club: We Need To Stop Normalising Things00:24:24

Twitter is obsessed with normalising things. From the benign, such as normalising going to the cinema alone, to the vaguely political such as normalise body hair, right up to the extremes of social justice; if there's an issue, we want to normalise it. But does condensing our problems into this meme-esque format really do anything to push things forward? Or when we plea to the internet for a normalisation, are we really just trying to signal how tuned we are to the issues that matter?

This week Ione and Halima how the trend of normalising things is really just feeding into our obsession with individualism and actually breaking down any hopes we have of collective liberation.

17 Jan 2022The Sleepover Club: Everything Gen Z Gets Wrong About Indie Sleaze00:29:01

Haven't you heard? Indie Sleaze is back! Dig out the coloured tights, find your old American Apparel hoodies and dust off your old copies of NME. This week we're joined by Polyester socials editor Eden Young, as her and Ione describe what Indie Sleaze was really like to someone who was never there: Halima, aka our resident Gen Z.

What is the difference between Twee, Indie Sleaze, Nu Rave, and the 2014 Tumblr Girl? And why is TikTok lumping them all together when discussing the current cultural resurgence? With guest statements from none other than the Indie Sleaze instagram account itself, Ione and Eden remember what made the era great; and try to convince Halima to embrace its newest incarnation.

23 Jan 2022The Sleepover Club: The 'Toxic' Femininity Deep Dive Part One - Why We Love 'Evil' Women00:25:30

'Evil' women are everywhere, from on our screens, to between the pages of the books we read, and across our feeds in the form of memes. The discourse as to whether these characters are idol worthy, or in fact just rationalising our worst behaviours, is a conversation that has the internet torn. So we're getting into it!

In this first instalment of our toxic women two-parter, we're exploring the reasons we love these depictions of femininity. From why these characters feel more real than those across other genres, how we confuse 'messy' with 'evil', and how, even today, only a certain type of woman is afforded messiness.

31 Jan 2022The Sleepover Club: The 'Toxic' Femininity Deep Dive Part Two - The Emergence Of 'Dissociative Feminism' 00:24:34

It's part two of the 'toxic' women deep dive! This week we're discussing the backlash against the 'evil' women genre and how the TikTok girlies are catapulting our obsession with these characters into a new era. From being in your 'fleabag era' and basing your whole life on the protagonist of My Year Of Rest And Relaxation, to femcels and the emerging trend of 'dissociative feminism'. We're exploring why so many people view these characters as apathetic but aspirational, and what it all says about our current cultural moment.

07 Feb 2022The Sleepover Club: The Return Of The Trad Wife 00:24:05

Today, we are seeing more and more discourse about the rise of the trad (traditional) wife, with the gorls on Tiktok and Instagram romanticising having a family, being a wife, sundresses and staying at home. Very Lana del Rey 2012 vibes. In 1963, Betty Friedan wrote about the “problem with no name.” Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique detailed the widespread unhappiness of the idealised happy-suburban-housewife in the 1950s and early 1960s. So why have we returned to pining for these outdated notions of femininity?

This week Halima and her special guest, Polyester socials editor Eden Young, discuss why so many women crave a lifestyle second-wave feminists fought so adamantly against, and why feminism is not the reason we have to work to live - capitalism is.

14 Feb 2022The Sleepover Club: Kardashian Kolloquium On Why We Can't Stop Keeping Up With The Kardashians00:36:27

From Kimye's divorce, to the new Hulu show, North's TikTok and Kourtney's emo phase, whether you love to hate them or can't help but being obsessed with them, not a week goes by where we don't hear from the Kardashian family. This week on the podcast we're joined by MJ Corey, founder of Kardashian Kolloquium, to break down why they continue to dominate celebrity culture, how she avoids unhealthy parasocial relationships with the family, and what draws her to applying academia to the very thing post people consider unintellectual.

With her work focused on studying the family through a theoretical lens via social media, MJ exists at the intersection of many things we look down on in culture: femininity, reality tv, and social media. Halima, Ione, and MJ break down why elitism is holding us back when it comes to social discourse, and why we should take online creators more seriously.

21 Feb 2022The Sleepover Club: Should We All Be Bimbos? Part One00:27:50

The internet has decided: the bimbo is back. But what does a return to bimboism mean for feminism? Is it just a regression into outdated stereotypes, or a reclamation of a set of aesthetic codes that have previously harmed us? And most importantly, is it really radical to be a bimbo?

Halima and Ione are dissecting it all; from the problematic Pam and Tommy miniseries, to leftist women embracing being a bimbo with their whole heart and whether this resurgence in popularity is just another symptom of our early 00's nostalgia. One things for certain; the bimbo revolution must be intersectional!

28 Feb 2022The Sleepover Club: What The Hell Is A Vibe Shift? 00:27:24

It's been practically impossible to move for the last two weeks without being told about 'the vibe shift'. We've all heard its coming, but what does it even mean? This week on The Sleepover Club Ione and Halima are discussing the viral essay by Allison P. Davis titled ‘A Vibe Shift Is Coming. Will any of us survive it?’ for The Cut.

The changing course of culture is inevitable, but with so much of our lives being played out online, can huge cultural swathes really effect the majority of us? How does a vibe change when so many of us exist in tiny online micro-communities?

Historically, we've swayed between ultra-political and entirely apathetic, with the overwhelming mood being that our current vibe shift will see an end to political-everything and the embracing of irony and having fun. But can't we do both? Can't we be happy, socially aware, and enjoy our lives while fighting for the things we believe in? What can the vibe shift tell us about feminism? Is the vibe shift a patriarchal tool? Only time will tell.

07 Mar 2022The Sleepover Club: Why Can't We Quit Our Obsession With It Girls?00:24:01

The it girl is a tradition as old as time itself; impossible cool and beautiful in equal measures, they set not only the tone for culture and beauty standards, put fill our brains with aspirations of how we should be living our lives. But why, in 2022, are we still obsessed with it girls?

With the archetypal it girl being white, cisgender, skinny and obscenely rich, surely it's time we stop putting these women on pedestals? Or are our it girls shifting, away from old markers of success and towards an inclusive future? Ione and Halima are discussing whether in the age of social media, we all become our own it girls, as well as dissecting the 'that girl' TikTok trend and debating if being an it girl is ever a good thing.

Mina is talking to us about her love of old Hollywood movies. From Casablanca (1942), Bringing Up Baby (1938) and Paddington 2 (you have to listen to find out more about that!), she tells us about how old Hollywood movies have impacted her style and why she loves the silliness of screwball comedies.

21 Mar 2022The Sleepover Club: What Our Infatuation With Scammers Says About Us 00:30:19

2019 may have been the year of the scam, but its in 2022 in which we're seeing all of these infamous stories played out on our tv screens. From Anna Delvey's plight to open a members club and Elizabeth Holmes becoming the first female billionaire, to the rise and demise of WeWork being depicted by Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto - we can't get enough of a good con story. But what does our infatuation with these stories say about us?

Ione and Halima are discussing what makes us root for these scammers, and what leads us to despise them. As well as dissecting why some scam artists (ehem - Anna Delvey) find themselves more loved in the public domain than others (we're looking at you Elizabeth Holmes). Does the rise in these stories being girlbossified by streaming services represent a darker shift in our current culture? Or do we just love to see an underdog win? Tune in to find out!

28 Mar 2022The Sleepover Club: Goblin Mode Captures The Mood Of The Moment 00:27:50

This week we're joined by Polyester socials editor and regular podcast guest Eden Young to dissect the mood of the moment, Goblin mode. Call it going feral, call it whatever you want, but we're all obsessed with exposing the very worst part of ourselves online. Ione and Eden dissect statements from Goblin Mode viral article author Kari Paul, and illustrator Esme Blegvad, to get to the bottom of why at this moment we're all obsessed with embracing our inner goblin.

But are all goblin modes made equal? Or is this just another bid for influencers and privileged women to perform relatability online? And who does goblin mode leave behind? And is the trend even hear to stay? We discuss all this and much more.

04 Apr 2022The Sleepover Club: Why Being A Hater Is So Much Fun00:26:46

Being a hater is the one thing none of us are happy to admit to. But with a wave of new TikTok trends normalising our tendencies to be nasty little cows, Ione and Halima are asking the question, is being a hater such a bad thing? We're breaking down everything from why hate can actually be a productive force, and why we shouldn't be ashamed to be haters, to discussing why we all feel we have to present our hate as an intellectual hate rather than an emotional one.

11 Apr 2022The Sleepover Club: Do We Have The Ability To Find Anything Funny Anymore?00:30:34

Forget middle aged, white cis male comedians telling us they've been cancelled. While they all hopefully disappear into irrelevance, how we approach humour as a generation is coincidentally changing. From our obsession with policing each other in comments sections, and unexplainable TikTok's making us laugh until we cry, to stand up comedians getting all their material from twitter and influencers treating the internet like their own personal group chat. Something weird is going on with our sense of humour, and this week Ione and Halima are getting to the bottom of it.

18 Apr 2022The Sleepover Club: How Social Media Aestheticised Loneliness00:29:28

Independence is sold to us as a necessity, as YouTubers and TikTok stars emphasise the need for being an individualist and having your own space. But can promoting isolation ever be dangerous? Are we allowed to say we feel lonely when alone? Hosts Ione Gamble and Halima Jibril explore loneliness as a self preservation tool in order to avoid vulnerability, the online aspiration to thrive on your own and how any of us can afford being alone in the first place.

02 May 2022The Sleepover Club: The Limits Of Lived Experiences - Should Marginalised People Be The Only Ones To Tell Their Stories?00:28:02

Lived experience is a debate that comes up time and time again in our cultural landscape - should only gay people play gay roles on-screen? Should white people be able to tell people of colours stories? And should non-disabled people be allowed to portray those with disability? This week Ione and Halima are discussing this article, and all of the discourse surrounding our lived experiences.

We're talking about whether the lived experience argument is based in fact, or is merely a myth conjured by those more privileged who feel oppressed by the limits of storytelling. And why instead of focusing on this age-old debate, we should draw our focus towards ways of actually letting our voices be heard.

09 May 2022The Sleepover Club: Instagram Is In It's Flop Era00:29:11

For the last five years, we've all collectively been lamenting the downfall of instagram. First, they took our chronological feed. Then, they pivoted to Reels. But as we all become increasingly exhausted with the platform, why can't we let go? And with the reaction to Elon Musk buying Twitter being so intense, do social media platforms owe anything to their users?

This week we're discussing how Instagram has become culturally void, whether TikTok is the future, and whether insta's downfall is an inevitable part of the cycle of social media or our reluctance to let it go signals a greater shift in our culture.

16 May 2022The Sleepover Club: The Cult Of Confidence Feminism00:27:48

We're told being confident is the answer to all of life's problems. That to be a good feminist, or friend, or to excel at your job and learn to love yourself, you must be confident. But when did empowerment become dependent on our ability to be believe in ourselves? And is the cult of confidence merely a distraction that keeps us from tackling real systemic oppression?

This week Ione and Halima are discussing how the pressure to be confidence is actually holding us back, and how we can find a balance between individualism masked as self improvement and believing in ourselves for the greater good.

DeuxMoi has been unmasked, with the famed gossip account being run by two socialite-adjacent white New York women. In honour of her no longer anonymity, we're discussing the legacy of modern gossip accounts. Do celebrities set themselves up for this type of attention, or do gossip accounts encourage a gross surveillance state? And once these accounts aren't anonymous anymore, can they ever retain their integrity? Especially when they start monetising their content? Ione and Halima argue it out on the podcast this week!

13 Jun 2022The Sleepover Club: Is TikTok Ruining The Music Industry?00:24:30

Musicians are being held captive! Forced to step onto the content treadmill and churn out TikTok's that they supposedly don't want to make, this week Halima and Ione are discussing whether the social media platform is helpful or harmful to those in the industry.

We'll be dissecting the impact of those videos; the ones in which musicians lament the fact their labels are forcing them to partake in TikTok trends. As well as debating autonomy, whether forcing artist's into content creation is stifling their creativity, or if they're just being snobs towards a platform that isn't necessarily made for them.

20 Jun 2022The Sleepover Club: Is Inclusivity On Reality Shows Like Love Island Always Necessary?00:25:43

Love Island is back! And as the reality series returns, so does the age old discourse; should reality tv be inclusive? Or is inclusivity on these shows a poisoned chalice that sets the 'diverse' contestants up for failure? This week Ione and Halima are discussing whether its best to let reality tv be trashy, guilty pleasures that do not reflect the wider world; or if there's a better way forward, in which inclusivity is not retroactively fitted and those of us who love the genre aren't left with a bad taste in our mouths.

27 Jun 2022The Sleepover Club: How Catholic Chic Became Summers Biggest Trend00:28:58

All across our social feeds, girlies online are embracing religion and creating memes out of catholicism. Whether you've bought the Praying 'father, son, and Holy Spirit' bikini, or still can't stop thinking about Julia Fox praying in her cut editorial - christianity is back baby! But is this appropriation of religious iconography a harmless foray into aesthetics, a subversion of their power, or simply in bad taste? We're discussing the origins of the trend, its current incarnation, and if we should be aestheticising a religion that still harms so many people.

Please note, this episode was recorded prior to the overturning of Roe vs Wade on the 24th of June 2022, we'll be discussing this news in upcoming episodes.

04 Jul 2022The Sleepover Club: Being 'Woman'd' - How Female Celebs Are Ousted For Nothing00:27:33

Cultural critic Rayne Fisher-Quann tweeted "Ottessa Moshfegh is on the verge of getting woman’d I can feel it (woman’d is what I call it when everyone stops liking a woman at the same time" at the end of June and opened up the debate for whether female celebrities always deserve to be "cancelled". This week's episode debates whether it is always a case of misogynistic hatred, which women have suffered from being woman'd and how the internet is becoming a more and more toxic place for women to exist.

11 Jul 2022The Sleepover Club: TikTok's Siren Gaze, Dark Femme Energy, Vabbing and The Rise Of Pick Me Behaviour Online00:29:06

The girlies on TikTok are using their vagina fluid as perfume, practising their 'O' faces under the assumption it helps attract a lover, and practising pseudo spirituality as a means of empowering their 'dark femme energy'. But are these practises feminist, or simply pick up artist techniques for the girls? And do these behaviours enable women to take a greater portion of control in relationships, or is it all an illusion? Ione and Halima are discussing all this and much more this week.

18 Jul 2022The Sleepover Club: Is The Coquette Aesthetic Just Lolita Style In Gen Z Clothing?00:26:33

Sugar, spice and everything nice; thats what coquette girls are made of. But is the trending aesthetic as innocent as it seems? While self proclaimed coquettes love frills, heart shapes, Lana del Rey, all things french AND all things Americana — and want everyone on TikTok to know their aesthetic is totally unique — the saccharine style reminds us of one thing, Lolitas.

But has this new wave of ultra-feminine girlies managed to shrug off the damaging stereotypes associated with Lolita style? Or do coquettes also fetishise youth, whiteness and skinniness, creating yet another unattainable standard for women? Ione and Halima discuss!

We've all been there. But is the ick a natural response, and something we should talk about openly with each other. or does it signal a toxic strand of #DumpHim feminism that views people as disposable, replaceable commodities?

Everyone, including The Kardashians, are very very upset with Instagram. After the head of the app was forced to make a statement following an onslaught of complaints by high profile users towards Instagram's insistence to become TikTok - we're once again taking a deep dive into all of the current social media drama. 12 Sep 2022The Sleepover Club: What The Don't Worry Darling Drama Says About Our Current Cultural Climate00:32:45

If you're anything like us, the drama surrounding Don't Worry Darling has been consuming your every waking thought. Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine! Olivia Wilde lied! Florence Pugh turned up and drank aperol spritz defiantly! But with two weeks until any of us see the actual film, we're breaking down what the drama means for the larger cultural moment we're living in. From post me-too sentiment and the rehabilitation of rotten men, to two women semi-fighting publicly and the cast hooking up on set; we're discussing both the drama itself and how the internet has interpreted, meme'd, and dissected the story — making it impossible to separate reality from fiction.

19 Sep 2022The Sleepover Club: Why Is Everyone Obsessed With Representation Politics Again? 00:30:06

Representation discourse is back baby! From Ariel and Lizzo's Emmy win, to the queen being a woman, and our third evil prime minister; we're all obsessed with diversity yet again!

For a brief moment in time, it felt like we'd left representation politics in the past. They'd we'd all come to a consensus that diversity discourse was pointless, serving as a shiny veneer to allow un-inclusive institutions to cover their backs and seem as though they were pushing for societal change. Now they're back, and Halima, Ione and Eden are asking why we're so content on accepting the bare minimum.

26 Sep 2022The Sleepover Club: How The Media Have Spun The Cost Of Living Crisis Into Poverty Porn 00:33:28

why are rich people so obsessed with using working class people as entertainment? How does social media fuel our voyeuristic gaze on those experiencing poverty? And why are the upper classes still fetishising the poor?

From competition prizes that pay off your energy bills to influencers that build their entire brands on 'thrifty' tips to survive the cost of living crisis; we're living in a dystopian nightmare. Instead of real, tangible advice that would ease the increase of price in essentially everything needed to survive, the media has decided to turn our current crisis into poverty porn. 07 Nov 2022The Sleepover Club: The Death Of Nuance, Why Being 'Chronically Online' Gives You Brain Worms, And The Era of Anti-Intellectualism00:31:57

Anti intellectualism is having a moment. Express an opinion online and they'll be at least five people in your mentions telling you that you're wrong. Maybe you spend your morning drinking coffee with your partner, causing uproar from those who have to be at work in the early hours. Perhaps you hate Marvel films, or dare to prefer one type of bread over another. But is our inability to contextualise the posts we see a form of anti-intellectualism? Are the binaries of 'high' and 'low' culture changing? And should we just let people enjoy things? This week Ione and Eden are discussing whether this constant dumbing down of discourse, art, and everything in between is more insidious than it may seem.

No matter where you stand on Quentin Tarantino, one thing is for sure; celebrity is changing. As 2022 draws to a close, Ione and Eden are reflecting on the year in celebrity, and movie stars in particular. 16 Jan 2023The Sleepover Club: Is It Time To Retire The 'Sad Girls With Bad Boyfriends' Narrative?00:30:50

It's a tale as old as time: a woman experiences a breakup, and in the midst of her heartbreak, takes to the internet to tell us every sordid detail of the ways in which her ex did her wrong. Whether on TikTok, published in personal essays on prestigious platforms, or showcased on Instagram stories - the girlies can't get enough of exposing the men that have ruined their lives. But have we bored of hearing these stories? And even worse, do they paint women as perpetual victims unable to exercise autonomy in their own relationships? Ione and Eden discuss!

23 Jan 2023The Sleepover Club: Why Can't We Leave Britney Alone? Because TikTok Correspondents Are Turning Us All Into Monstrous Tabloid Journalists 00:29:03

Britney Spears is once again the focus point of internet gossip. The conspiracy theories grow more outlandish by the minute; from the pop star having a body double, to her husband placing her in a new conservatorship and pushing the star in front of a green screen to create Instagram content. But unlike in the early 00s, we now all have the ability to comment, dissect, and tear apart celebrities behaviour. No longer is the worst person online Perez Hilton, because millions of us on TikTok are elongating his legacy; using celebrities pain to generate engagement and boost our own profiles. Are we sleepwalking into another nightmare, in which marginalised celebrities are treated with no regard for their wellbeing? Ione and Eden discuss.

30 Jan 2023The Sleepover Club: Is Lucky Girl Syndrome Real?00:29:09

Have you heard of lucky girl syndrome? The craze sweeping social media is bringing back manifestation and positive thinking for a new generation. With lucky girls taking over TikTok, we're asking if demanding what you want from the universe is uplifting or reductive? Can you really get what you want by just believing you deserve it? Or is it just a grossly naive flex that just shows us how little work has been done in terms of understanding privilege in our society? This Episode, Ione and Eden discuss how Millennials and Gen Z's adoption of pseudo spiritualism may be more damaging than it first appears.

06 Feb 2023The Sleepover Club: Recession Core Is As Depressing As It Sounds 00:30:00

We've been cursed with a new 'core'l and this one may be the bleakest of them all. Celebrities are no longer wearing necklaces on the runway, minimalism is back, and a new trend dubbed 'recession core' is the latest fixation of TikTok trend forecasters. But does fashion really change in times of economic uncertainty? Rich people certainly aren't getting any poorer, so is this new conscious aesthetic just another attempt to glean relatability from the masses? Or do socio-economic theories such as the lipstick theory and the hemline index really ring true? Ione and Eden delve into the politics of fashion and frugality in this weeks episode.

13 Feb 2023The Sleepover Club: Is Deinfluencing Going to Save Us All? Or Is It Just Consumerism In Disguise?00:28:48

No longer is it enough for people on the internet to tell us what to buy, they've decided they have to tell us what not to buy, too. Like a consumerist superhero; influencers are trending for telling us the dyson air wrap is a waste of money, or that viral skirt you really want is actually uncomfortable. But are these internet personalities doing important work in turning us off these products, or are they just wise to the fact over-consumption is no longer trendy?

This week Eden and Ione are discussing how we got to this moment, as well as examining the recent history of how our spending habits have been changed and influenced by those around us.

20 Feb 2023The Sleepover Club: TERFs Are Ruining Feminism00:40:38

Following the death of Brianna Ghey, as well as an open letter penned by contributors of The New York Times condemning the publications reporting on gender, and the defence of JK Rowling that followed, transgender rights are once again under attack. For this week's podcast, Ione and Eden are revisiting an episode from 2020 in which we discussed the rise of TERF ideology, and how the media at large has fuelled anti-trans sentiment both in the UK and the USA.

In another special edition of The Sleepover Club, we're joined by Vice features editor Hannah Ewens to discuss her recent long read about how the debate over human rights for trans people came to dominate mainstream UK media and divide British feminists. A TERF is a trans-exclusionary radical 'feminist'. In this episode, Ione, Olivia, and Hannah discuss how TERF ideology has riddled British feminism, what cisgender feminists must do counteract it, and how representation / our treatment of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people in the media needs to change.

27 Feb 2023The Sleepover Club: Are Sex Scenes In Film and Tv Immoral? 00:32:13

Penn Badgley has managed to single handedly set alight the discord over the past couple of weeks. Revealing that he no longer wants to perform sex scenes out of respect for his marriage, his comments have stoked the flames of a long running Twitter storm. Gen Z supposedly thinks sex scenes should be eliminated from film and tv entirely. Are they all prudes? Or do they have a point? This week; Ione and Eden are diving head first into the discourse, from whether people are having sex less generally, to the fact that we never see Marvel stars bang, and whether it really is a 'violation of consent' to expect actors to act out sexual acts on screen.

06 Mar 2023The Sleepover Club: How Ozempic Killed Body Positivity And Why We Need Gross Girls More Than Ever00:31:26

As the remnants of fourth wave feminism cling on for dear life, it's become impossible to ignore the idea that we're now living through a post-feminist era. In the 10 months since the release of our host Ione Gamble's debut Poor Little Sick Girls, body positivity has died, #MeToo is non-existent and the discourse has stripped any semblance of nuance from online life. This week, Ione and Eden discuss where feminism goes from here, why we should all be less scared of being cancelled, and why earnestness is the only thing that can save us all.

20 Mar 2023The Sleepover Club - Cloutbombing & The Need to Remain Culturally Relevant At Any Cost00:29:57

Brad Troemel has coined a term to describe the diversity quota meme-laden photoshoots that take over our feeds these days - Cloutbombing.

But what does the term actually mean? Are brands referencing digital culture in an attempt to stay culturally relevant? And are we doomed to play into the hands of cloutbombing forever more?

This week on the pod Ione and Eden are getting into cloutbombing, consumer theory, the need to prove that The Scene is back!, No Logo by Naomi Klein, hyper niche online subculture and those big red boots.

27 Mar 2023The Sleepover Club: How Misogynists Are Using Infographics & Pseudoscience To Fuel Anti-Feminism00:29:18

You've probably seen the thin green line of misogyny - a new wave of infographics peddled by far-right twitter accounts and satirised by practically everyone else, highlighting incel-adjacent theories around gender and feminism. But while these images may be ready made meme material for most of the world; in the manosphere (a term we decode in this episode), these anti-feminist ideologies are growing quickly. But as incels begin using science and pop-psychology to validate their hatred, should we be taking their naively annotated imagery more seriously? Or is humour one of the most effective tools we have? Ione and Eden discuss.

03 Apr 2023The Sleepover Club: The Farce Of #MeToo & Why Abuse Of Power Still Comes As No Surprise 00:32:46

It's been a grim week, month, and year when it comes to abuses of power in Hollywood. As a string of stories in the past few weeks have been published pertaining to the abuse of women on film and tv sets; Ione and Eden are contemplating the effectiveness of Hollywoods activism. From allegations surrounding Sam Levinson's 'The Idol' production to Jonathan Major's assault arrest and women coming forward with accusations towards Emrata's ex and Uncut Gems producer Sebastian Bear-MclCard - the news cycle, and the state of how women are still being treated in the entertainment industry, is pretty bleak.

In what we're dubbing ‘the allegedly episode’, Ione and Eden are touching upon whatever happened to the Times Up organisation and corporate Hollywood activism, if anti-cancellation discourse is preventing recourse for those that abuse their power, why it feels like a joke when Hollywood tries to portray such narratives on screen, and how we can move forward, while attempting to make change, without losing our minds. TW: sexual assault, abuse.

10 Apr 2023The Sleepover Club: Blokecore, The Legacy Of Ladettes, And Why We Should Be Worried About The Co-option Of Working Class Culture00:31:45

All of the girlies, from Bella Hadid to Kim Kardashian herself, are dressing like they love the football. Blokecore is the latest microtrend to sweep the internet - and suddenly, going to the pub with a footy scarf round your head (the style itself now christened the 'litty scarf') is a personality type. This week, Ione are examining the history of how we treat working class aesthetics - from the demonisation of ladette culture, and the knowing irony that so often infiltrates blokecore, to whether this new iteration of popularisation signals the return of a dreaded, populist type of neoliberalism that demonises the working classes at every opportunity.

17 Apr 2023The Sleepover Club: Therapy Speak Is Ruining Our Friendships And Making Us Terrible People 00:31:55

Have you ever received a message along the lines of, "Do you have the emotional/mental capacity for me to vent about something"? Or have you accused your friends of overstepping your boundaries, or not holding space for you to prioritise yourself? Over the past few years, this formalisation language - dubbed 'therapy speak' has infiltrated the way we talk to each other.

But is that person really gaslighting you? Or have we become too quick to medicalise our interpersonal issues? This episode, Ione and Eden are interrogating the origins of therapy speak online. From the motivations behind the individual influencers that peddle it, and whether any therapist or professional mental health worker would ever speak to you that way, to interrogating why we all feel so compelled to intellectualise the issues in our friendships.

Is there any good to be gleamed from binge watching? Or do you long for the era of waiting for new episodes to air on the terrestrial television channels' primo spot? And how is anyone meant to enjoy an anticipated episode of their fav show when social media has laid all the best bits bare already?

01 May 2023The Sleepover Club: On Wednesdays We Dox Mean Girls On TikTok00:29:52

This week, social media decided on a common enemy. After this video went viral, showing two young women mocking another who was taking selfies and filming TikToks at a sports game - the entire internet came together to dox the two perpetrators. But who really was the mean girl in this scenario? Was it the pair, annoyed at being filmed in public? Or the poster for exploiting their experience in exchange for thousands of new followers. Ione and Eden are discussing what it means to be a twenty first century mean girl, how the archetype has changed, and if bad behaviour should or should not be punished by the court of online opinion.

08 May 2023The Sleepover Club: All Your Fave Magazines Are Closing, But Who Killed Digital Media? 00:33:04

Paper Magazine, Gal-dem, and Buzzfeed news have all recently ceased publication, with rumours circulating that Vice and i-D are next on the chopping block. Once again, this has been a tumultuous year for digital publications. But how did we get here, and who is at fault? This week Ione and Eden are digging into why it feels like a new publication closes once a week, from the power hierarchies within media spaces, to selling out, and whether culture journalism is as powerful as it used to be. TW: Lots of bias due to our position as an indie magazine, lol.

Are our favourite musicians really conceptualised by men sitting in a boardroom? And does it matter if they are?
