Now, not all the elements in these garden shows are worth copying, these are shows after all. But some are; so what are they?

27 Oct 2022Growing a Grass Garden - do you Xeriscape?00:23:19

I discovered a new word this week - Xeriscape, which means to grow plants whilst reducing the need for irrigation.  And ornamental grasses are very good plants that don't require much water, which makes them an ideal choice in many gardens,

But often growing these ornamental grasses in the garden can lead to disappointing results; so this week Rachel discusses how you can grow them better.

04 Nov 2022How to choose a garden colour scheme00:23:57

Gardens are not outdoor rooms, you cannot apply interior design principles to a garden. Nature does not exclude certain colours or shapes or plants, the landscape is merely a reflection of the plants that thrive in the conditions that prevail. So if you try to micro-manage the garden style and planting colour themes, the overall effect begins to look too sanitised.

The best approach is with a few guidelines - read the article

18 Nov 2022Garden design; what everyone should think about .... but don't!00:22:27

Gardens don't exist in a photograph or a moment in time.
Picture-perfect gardens are not real, all gardens create work. Large gardens create a lot of work, so how do you ensure the design itself doesn't create unnecessary maintenance or build in additional costs to look after it?

18 Nov 2022How your garden can tap into the Internet of Life for free00:23:37

The buzzword for many gardeners is low maintenance - but we have the wrong concept of what low maintenance should mean. The best low-maintenance garden is one where the plants look after themselves.
This week, Rachel looks at the wood-wide web and how it can help you create a low-maintenance, well-balanced healthy garden - for free.

31 May 2019Nature should not stop at the garden fence00:18:57

This years Chelsea Flower Show was ground-breaking - at last the show gardens really showcased what the garden is for. The show was not the plants or the design that mattered most; instead the 'show' on display at Chelsea was Nature.

Gardens and gardening has changed, gone are the outdated ideals of what a garden should be; instead the garden is all about creating a place where you can enjoy the natural world; if you plant right nature will come to you.

2020 is turning out to be a historic year, a seminal moment, a pre 2020 and post 2020 line in the sand where we compared how we did things then and how we do things now.
Covid19 has forced change upon us, but the climate was also forcing us to rethink our habits - and in terms of gardening this is a big one - watering.
Why do we water our gardens and should we be?

It's actually quite a difficult question.  As a garden designer, I have always felt this is an overlooked question. We get too caught up in how the garden should look and what design features to include.

But if you don't ask the question - you won't know the answer, and that will mean your garden doesn't and can't do the right things for you!

25 Sep 2020How to 'do' Garden Mirrors - properly00:21:57

I have always been a lover of garden mirrors. Mirrors are a great design tool, available in every shape and size, but mostly because; a well placed mirror in the garden can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary!

What's so great about garden mirrors?

Mirrors have 4 main functions in any garden,

  • To reflect sunlight into dark spaces
  • They add depth to a garden
  • Mirrors can be used to help hide uglier objects
  • The mirror itself is a piece of artwork or garden sculpture.

26 Oct 2020Inside the Mind of a Garden Design - Shallow Sloping Gardens00:22:16

Dealing with a shallow sloping garden is relatively easy, but you have to be bold.

The garden must take on the slope and first and foremost provide a practical solution to the contours. You simply can't sit at a sloping table - the wine glasses will topple over! Some landscape levelling has to be done, site the main seating area in the nicest part of the garden and work from there.

How will you get there and then what will you look at. Use plants that are tall and skinny, but open and light, to fill the vertical space but not use up horizontal space.  Read more

19 Mar 2021How to Maximise Space in a Small Garden00:20:26

Making the most of your garden is not about packing lots of interest into a garden.  Adding 'designer features' or finishing touches won't make the best use of the small space. WHY; well its all about knowing which parts of the garden are useful and which aren't. The useful areas are for you to occupy, the unused parts host everything else. If you only fill those areas of the garden YOU would never utilise - the usable space is automatically maximised ...

10 Jul 2021RHS Show Gardens and why you shouldn't try copy them00:21:29

Garden Shows are full of Show Gardens but should these really be called gardens? Are they gardens and if not why not. The trouble though is the RHS, Experts and the Media, extol the virtues of these displays as 'gardens' ; which dupes the non-gardening public into believing these can and should be copied.

In this episode Rachel discusses why non-expert garden owners get duped into possibly wasting money by the very people who are supposed to be helping them. And it's all because it's called a garden....

10 Sep 2021Why gardens don't work - some common design mistakes to avoid00:16:41

Ever wondered why when you create a garden, it never seems to deliver what you had hope? After all you've got the lovely green lawn, flowers borders by the fence and space for the kids to run around... so why isn't the garden the space you'd hoped for?

Garden design needs to change to reflect how you want to use the garden - not what's in the garden. This week Rachel introduces Helen Mayors Peach - a very good friend (and super clever person) to discuss why the normal garden layout - just isn't any good.

If you want to read more about Rachels really user friendly gardening ideas - try her fabulous new book I Want to Like my Garden - it really is a garden changer.

17 Sep 2021Deconstructing Your Garden - why you don't need to think like a gardener!00:18:21

This week H and I challenge garden convention. Why are gardens described in a certain way, what should your garden be and why the horticultural industry and garden media make gardening more difficult than it needs to be.

We have decided to subvert garden convention by launching the 'Garden Liberation Front' - freeing millions of wanabee gardeners from nonsensical constraints and conventions. Your garden is what YOU want it to be.
