#52: How to Avoid a Negotiation Crisis
00:21:26
Today I discuss lessons from operational aspects of a negotiation. This episode covers the six domains of physically reading an interaction. This is information from the US Marine Corps Combat Hunter Program that you can use in business to gain insights in any negotiation. These concepts appear in the book Left of Bang by Patrick Van Horne and Jason Riley who now consult businesses on things they learned in their military careers.

#53: Expert Advice on How to Negotiate with Narcissists
00:47:23
The second most listened to episode in The Persuasion Lab was about how to negotiate with a narcissist, based on nothing more than my experience of over 25 years negotiating deals and disputes and dime-store understanding of the personality type.
This week, we interview an expert on the topic, a clinical psychologist of vast experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings with clients across the socio-economic spectrum. Our guest this week is none other than Dr. Mary Ellen Medeiros! A professor of psychology (and also my sister), Dr. Medeiros, and I drill down on how the term is misused and how to negotiate with narcissists.
NPD Criteria in DSM-V:
A grandiose sense of self-importance (as in, the individual exaggerates achievements and talents and expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
A preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
A belief that he or she is special and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people or institutions
A need for excessive admiration
A sense of entitlement (as in an unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations)
Interpersonally exploitive behavior (ie, the individual takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends)
A lack of empathy (unwillingness to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others)
Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of him or her
A demonstration of arrogant and haughty behaviors or attitudes
Additional Information on the subject can be found at APA.org

#54: What is your ZOPA and why you need one now
00:18:48
This week we will teach the five-step process to obtain a Zone of Possible Negotiation - the ZOPA- and its utility and failings. This appears in the book Negotiation Genius by Deepak Malhotra and Max Bazerman of Harvard Business School. This book is used by many MBA programs.
We discuss how this is very different than the "best alternative to a negotiated agreement "(BATNA), but uses the BATNA concept in the ZOPA formula. The ZOPA relies on intelligence we don't always get to have in practice.

#57: Ways you negotiate everyday regardless of your job
00:19:17
Possibly the MOST common reaction I get from folks when I teach negotiation is: "but I don't negotiate." Today, I'm here to tell you that you absolutely DO negotiate. It could be convincing your kids to hang up their wet towels or getting a team member to finish a project on time and within budget. Even if you're not on the front lines of sales, acquisitions, law, politics, or diplomatic pursuits, you're negotiating at least once a day... usually more. Spoiler alert: the skill set that makes you effective in getting a hostage returned or finally getting your spouse to put their dishes IN the dishwasher are surprisingly similar.

#59: 6 reliable ways to negotiate honestly and effectively
00:48:07
Lots of folks avoid negotiation (and/or conflict) because they don't want to be 'manipulative' or 'sleezy.' The good news: the best negotiators use tactics that are the opposite of sleezy. They know that those manipulative, sleezy tactics will absolutely be used on them at one point or another, and so they also know what to look out for throughout their deals and negotiations. Listen in to this week's episode to learn how to negotiate with integrity, AND how to be smart about when those sleezy tactics are being used against you so that you don't fall prey.

#72: Honoring History to Improve the Present: the 36 Stratagems
00:35:38
I first came across the 36 Stratagems courtesy of Chin-Ning Chu -- while these methods originate from the life of the ancient Chinese Warrior Class, they're worth understanding, regardless of your culture. This episode will walk you through each stratagem, and a modern interpretation and business corollary.
While today many of the stratagems are considered frankly unethical to translate into the world of business (remember, these were developed for surviving and thriving in times of war), knowing and understanding that these methods are used will support your strategies and tactics.
Of course, given the climate of xenophobia and racism, let me say explicitly that I provide this information as an honor and tribute to Chinese culture.
If I've made a mis-step in any of my translations and re-applications to modern life (from business to politics to diplomacy) PLEASE do not hesitate to reach out and let me know at info@negotiationstrategist.com so that I can rectify and correct the issue(s)!
The Persuasion Lab Podcast and all affiliated publications and team members condemn xenophobia, racism, and violence against all people, including those of Chinese and Asian descent.
