In today’s episode of the Period Recovery Podcast, I sit down with Molly Kate (or Molly Seifert)  about gaining weight during period recovery.  We all have experienced anxiety about how others will view us when we gain weight. 

Molly & I give you practical tips to overcome this fear & so much more. Molly talks about the challenges of buying new clothes and the permission we need to give ourselves to gain weight & start living again.

Molly’s wellness journey started about a decade ago when she realized whatever was happening with her digestion was (shockingly) not normal. With some support from her boss at the time, She experimented with going gluten-free and felt infinitely better.  I continued to experiment with what was going on in my belly and how she felt. She has dealt with some bumps in the road: digestive issues, fatigue, eczema, psoriasis, weight fluctuations, sugar cravings, body image issues, and disordered eating.  Overcoming these obstacles has empowered Molly to help others find their sense of self and empowerment.

Hey everyone! 

I’m very excited about this one. I’m going to be dropping some truth bombs and clearing up some of the half-truths!

In this week’s solo episode, I discuss the myths and false information I was given when missing a period. Along with clarifying some of the lies that multiple people have been told by health professionals, I’ll give the TRUTH about your missing period. 


Some of the half-truths women hear about their missing period :

{12:13} You just came off the pill - expect 3-6 months to have a regular cycle

{14:07} Progesterone can kick start your period

{15:48} You need to be careful about what you are eating but keep exercising

{18:22} You are not skinny enough to have HA; you have a normal BMI

{20:23} Other women work out as much as you or more, and they have normal periods

{22:00} Post-pill amenorrhea 

{22:40} If you don’t want kids, then it doesn’t matter

{24:32} You can be on hormone replacement for the rest of your life

About Dr. Ashley Moody 

Dr. Moody received her Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from Upstate Medical University and continued to graduate as a member of the Phi Chi Omega Honor Society from the New York Chiropractic College, with her Doctorate in Chiropractic. During her clinical rotations, Dr. Moody was hand selected from a group of her peers to serve as the Student Remote Chiropractic Clerk at the Rochester, NY Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital. She went on to finish her clinical rotations as the first ever selected Chiropractic extern at the Pittsburgh, PA VA. During that time, she had the opportunity to work within a clinically based multidisciplinary setting involving orthopedists, physical therapists, and pain management specialists. Following graduation, Dr. Moody accepted a position with a sports-based clinic in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Here she worked as a provider helping those with chronic pain as well as athletes that participated in youth track, personal training, yoga, and CrossFit. This diverse patient population has helped her develop a treatment style that is evidence-based and patient-centered. Originally from the Mohawk Valley, returning home to open Climb Chiropractic Sports Health is working towards her dream of providing the best possible conservative musculoskeletal health care in Central New York.

 

Dr. Moody is trained in Active Release Technique (ART), ConnecTX instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation (FAKTR) as well as Functional Movement Taping (levels I and II) through Rocktape. In 2019, she became a BirthFit Leader and is passionate about helping women to reconnect with their cores postpartum. She has participated in Why Mobility, Clinical Audit Process, and Motion Palpation Technique seminars. In her spare time, Dr. Moody enjoys being outdoors with friends and family. She enjoys various types of exercise including yoga, hiking, strength training, CrossFit, and running

  • [09:30] Dopamine, which is low in ADHD brains, is tied to estrogen, so when estrogen levels drop, dopamine levels drop - women with ADHD might notice that their cycle is significantly linked to their symptoms
  • [21:30] Folks who have ADHD have lower levels of interoceptive awareness - also known as the ability to pick up on body cues, including things such as hunger and needing to go to the bathroom
  • [35:25] Protein can be something a lot of people with ADHD struggle to get adequate amounts of; carbs are a source of dopamine, so people with ADHD enjoy carbohydrates, leading to their “preferred” foods being more in line with carbs


Becca King is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from Charlotte, North Carolina. As an adult with ADHD, who struggled for years with disordered eating, Becca is passionate about helping other adults with ADHD who struggle with binge eating, chronic dieting, and body image issues find food freedom and improve their self-esteem.   • [08:13] Heart disease. This area is understudied and underdiagnosed; women often don’t have symptoms of this condition and don’t seek treatment.
  • [16:54] HA doesn’t cause heart disease, but we’ve found that it can lead to heart disease; it’s a time and opportunity to prevent it, too
  • [42:15] Going on the pill masks the underlying condition [in this case, HA]; these women still have the condition, so they’re still walking around with high cortisol and other endocrine disruptors


About Dr. Chisandra Shufelt:

Dr. Shufelt is Professor and Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and Associate Director of the Women's Health Research Center at Mayo Clinic Enterprise. She is a women’s health internist with fellowship training in vascular biology and women's health and a certified menopause practitioner. She has several National and International leadership roles in the American College of Physicians, the European Menopause and Andropause Society, and the North American Menopause Society, where she is the immediate past-President of the Society and on the board of trustees. Dr. Shufelt has over 200 publications in women’s health and has co-authored several scientific position statements on menopause and hormone therapy. Her NIH-funded research focuses on young women with hypothalamic amenorrhea evaluating the impact on immune and vascular health.

  • You can simply just listen to the health advice, but there’s work on your part too; if this (i.e. dancing, exercise, etc.) is something you truly love, you need to work on your “injury”, give it time to fully heal
  • There’s much we can attach to a woman’s menstrual cycle; during certain times of the month, we can access building more muscle strength, more energy, etc.

  • If you don’t want to change or fix something, don’t go into coaching - this way, you aren’t wasting resources for someone who does actually want to change or fix something about themselves
  • The sooner you start to try and recover your period, the sooner you can move on

Erietta is from Greece and lost her period due to a combination of stress, excessive exercise, and weight loss even though she never was pursuing trying to change her body or become 'more fit'.

Welcome back! Today we have Dr. Chrisandra Shufelt rejoining us to celebrate the launch of the REVEAL registry! This tool will help gather date worldwide from women, improve treatment, and spread awareness of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), a condition characterized by the absence of menstruation due to various factors including stress, exercise, and eating patterns. 

The discussion also touches on the implications of HA on fertility and brain health, highlighting the need for ongoing research and education in this area of women's health.

Dr. Shufelt is Professor and Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and Associate Director of Women's Health Research Center at Mayo Clinic Enterprise. She is a women’s health internist with fellowship training in vascular biology and women's health and a certified menopause practitioner. She has several National and International leadership roles in the American College of Physicians, the European Menopause and Andropause Society and the North American Menopause Society where she is the immediate past-President of the Society and on the board of trustees. Dr. Shufelt has over 200 publications in the area of women’s health and has also co-authored several scientific position statements on menopause and hormone therapy. Her NIH-funded research focuses on young women with hypothalamic amenorrhea evaluating the impact on immune and vascular health.
