In this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick chats with Tom from Cookville, Tennessee, diving into the nitty-gritty of biblical interpretation and how Jesus gave his apostles the authority to teach. 

Tom's Question: Tom wants to know where Jesus gave specific authority to interpret the Bible to someone or a group. 

Patrick's Insightful Response

Matthew 28:19-20: Jesus, with all authority in heaven and earth, tells His apostles to make disciples of all nations. This includes baptizing and teaching them everything He commanded, sharing His divine authority with them. 

Luke 10:16: Jesus tells His apostles, "He who listens to you, listens to me; he who rejects you, rejects me." Patrick says this shows Jesus giving His apostles the authority to teach and interpret Scriptures. 

St. Paul's Example: Paul, even though not one of the original twelve apostles, often debated Jewish leaders on the correct interpretation of Scriptures, reinforcing the idea of apostolic authority. 

Acts 17: The Bereans are praised for verifying Paul's teachings with the Scriptures, showing the importance of checking interpretations. 

Acts 8: The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch is another example where an apostle helps someone understand Scripture's true meaning. 

Tom's Reflections: Tom, a Protestant, talks about how he seeks God's guidance in understanding the Bible and understanding divine truth. He feels like he doesn't completely fit into the mold of Protestant belief and doesn't know where to go. That's a hard place to be. 

Patrick's Encouragement: Patrick offers Tom a book to dig deeper into these ideas, stressing that authoritative interpretation helps prevent misunderstandings. 

A Friendly Challenge: While Tom claims that he'll never join the Catholic Church, Patrick teases him that many who once said they'd never become Catholic ended up joining the Church. He encourages Tom to stay open-minded and keep engaging with Catholic teachings.

Patrick Madrid welcomes John from New Jersey, a dedicated pro-lifer with a pressing question on a tricky topic: ectopic pregnancies. John has heard conflicting advice on whether it's morally permissible to end an ectopic pregnancy to save the mother's life. He wants to know what the Catholic Church teaches.

Patrick's Breakdown:

Understanding Ectopic Pregnancies:

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. This condition is life-threatening for both the mother and the baby and is a heartbreaking situation.

Church's Teaching - The Principle of Double Effect:

The principle of double effect is crucial here. It allows for an action that has both a positive effect (saving the mother's life) and a negative effect (the unintended death of the child), provided the negative effect is not the intended outcome.

Three Foundations of a Moral Act:

Object of the Act: The act itself, such as removing the damaged fallopian tube, is not inherently immoral.

Intention: The intention behind the act is to save the mother's life, not to kill the child.

Circumstances: The context is that without intervention, both the mother and child would die.

Key Distinction:

Directly killing the child to save the mother is always immoral. The Church would never allow this. 

However, removing the fallopian tube (even though the child cannot survive this procedure) is morally permissible because the primary intent is to save the mother’s life, not to end the child’s.

Takeaway: The Catholic Church’s teaching on ectopic pregnancies hinges on the principle of double effect, ensuring that actions taken are morally sound, focusing on saving lives without intending harm.

Patrick explores how to honor our parents, heal, and find lightness in letting go. Dealing with difficult parental relationships can be tough, but honoring your father and mother doesn't mean putting them on a pedestal. It's about giving the due respect they deserve, even if your parents have hurt you or done wrong. Forgiveness is key. Release that emotional baggage and find peace. Even if you don't feel the warm and fuzzies, praying for them can be enough. Don't stay in toxic or dangerous situations, but know that honoring them can also mean setting boundaries.
